Is Starfield REALLY That Bad? | 2 Years Later…
Yeah, on September 6th, it’ll have been two years since Starfield came out. It’s crazy to think about given how high our hopes were for this game. In some ways, Starfield DOES deliver, but it’s many updates from where it should be even at this point in its lifespan. As Bethesda approaches a massive content drop for the game, let’s go over where Starfield stands right now and the pain points they could target to make it better.

Over promised and under delivered. Bethesda had all the opportunity to showcase their talent again but failed.
I believe that for space games with true depth play best using designs like the Mass Effect series. People often point to No Man’s Sky, but in all reality, that is a completely different game loaded with generic, procedural content that honestly just isn’t deep; it isn’t really an RPG. In RPGs, most people don’t expect to wander for 10 – 20 minutes to find content, even blanketed by the excuse, “nobody is making you go to empty locations”. In reality, yes you are being made to go to empty locations because in RPGs, exploration is usually an enormous part of the game. In Starfield, I’d go just to see if maybe they hid some random interest point there. However, in most cases it was empty as suggested. If you look at games like Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, and Fallout 4 you’ll realize that moving for like 4-5 minutes in any direction will lead you to something of interest, even if it’s just some kind of interesting landscape or a special point-of-interest.
I think Starfield is a case study in the fact that design is the most important aspect of game development. Just because a design works for one or two types of games doesn’t mean that it works for all of them. They used a game design that works well for a landmass smaller than a common state/province, and tried to apply it to a game with multiple planetary landmasses. I would rather they had made a first-person, Mass Effect style experience with less generated spaces and void content, and that classical Bethesda gameplay and charm.
Starfield was awesome it was just shallow
It felt 10 years too late
Yeah. Its not horrible. But I believe its main issue is that at least for me,its not very immersive. 😮
No Man’s Sky proofs with every update how god damn lazy the multi-million-dollar devs of Bethesda have become. The sheer insanity not having anything ready for the success of Amazons Fallout further shows that. I guess old Bethesda is as dead as old Bioware, which means ES6 will be a desaster.
Even watching video about starfield is boring
Bethesda still has not addressed the most debilitating problem in the game: Horrible repetitive Points Of Interest on planets: The same handful of enemy bases, with the same NPCs, and the same loot on every effing planet. I am sick of it.
I love the basic premise of the game. This game should and could have been my great love, but I hate it now. The repetitiveness is destroying my spirit.
There are more things that need addressing, but the above makes me never to want to install it again.
One of the worst things about this game is the fact that it feels like almost every leader is a female and 75% of the npcs are lesbian looking females acting tough . It’s a constant eye roll when interacting with npcs .
I cannot recommend this game. For me, the game fails because the game on rails. The quests are A to B, then B to C, then C to D. and there is no choice of outcome. Let’s look at a side quest, Free Star Ranger. Now, a minor spoiler, it has a fix outcome: “And you should have choice of outcomes, even basic ones like talking to your boss first”. This is the issue for me with star-field: the over all lack of choice, lack of cause and effect, and therefore the consequences of your actions.
Take a look at The Outer World, just as an example. In this game, you could make some basic choices, which would affect the outcome of quests and the game. Do you give the X item to group A or give it to group B, or do you try some-else, like make peace between both groups? Making basic choices which effect the outcome of the quest is what Star Field lacks and cannot sadly kills off this game.
Yes. It is an absolute boring dog💩 😂
I love Starfield
Todd Howard lied about the yearly expansions. Game is also a DEI piece of slop. Safe, sterile and boring. No risks.
2 years?! I feel like this released like a month ago
I enjoyed my first 30 hours. I never really followed the game that much so I, more or less, went in blind. But then my interest dropped drastically. I felt I’m doing the same thing over and over without any considerable payoff. I mean, I played games that are probably more repetitive with their gameplay loop but with Starfield there’s something about it that made me just gave up. I still plan on going back to the game at some point, but there are a lot of stuff that’s occupying my time right now that I feel are more rewarding.
Yes
I find it interesting that people who enjoyed Starfield always seem to particularly hate the digi-pick system.
I’m not saying it’s a great system. But it’s pattern recognition and a little bit of memory and basic problem solving. It’s not difficult.
Forced pronouns and the DEI crap ruined it and not to mention the emptyness feel of free roaming.
It’s just boring.
Blows my mind how time flys , keep your mind right with all these horrible news . Keep the grind brother 🎉
It’s a blatant step back from the systems and mechanics of Skyrim and Fallout 4. The crafting system, outpost system, player choices in quests (especially compared to ES 3, 4, and 5) companions, armor system, and exploration is all significantly worse and empty compared to previous games. It’s not a good Bethesda game, it’s mediocre at best. And I think one of the biggest reasons people hate on Starfield is that Bethesda delayed ES 6 and FO5 for an inferior IP that they don’t seem to have put much effort into. Starfield doesn’t earn its M rating, Neon is a joke, the space exploration is boring, the quests half baked, the dialogue system is still more limited than past games, the characters are uninteresting in story, actions, beliefs, or even appearance, the procedural generation is poorly implemented even compared to past BGS games (Daggerfall). The lore is all over the place, it misses basic sci-fi elements like intergalactic communication, the starship interiors are mostly non-functional (in a game that expects you to live out of it like a home base?) and parts are locked behind hidden requirements. If this is really Todd Howard’s passion project and the best modern BGS is capable of then I’m not planning on buying ES6.
2:55 as you should, my man. That’s THE way to play exploration games.
The worst thing in the gaming industry, is when devs think they know what’s better than the general population of the fan base. It’s kind of like when a singer brings out 2 great albums and the next one is trash, the fans say “well just change this around cause that’s we want” so the artist doubles down and causes worldwide panic with the next diabolical album. Like if we were a year from starfields release and they just mentioned the updates coming, I would have thought oh yeah cool but no it’s been like 2 years and the game still blows. I was a huge defender of this game because I knew Bethesda could do better. But their ignorance is definitely not bliss. If they pull a no man’s sky here and turn this game into a masterpiece, the mona lisa of scifi games, I can guarantee that this game will last for years upon years and make them so much money they can afford to ignore us all again on the next one.
I feel like I’m one of the few people who like the digi-pick system it was refreshing to be forced to think a few steps ahead sometimes but I agree the loot distribution is garbage
It has been great since launch
By far my biggest problem with Starfield is the bland setting. I think it’s the root of all the game’s problems. It sacrificed every fun thing that could have been in it on the altar of grounded realism, and it doesn’t even get that right. It should have gone a bit more speculative, maybe given us some aliens, maybe given us some more developed and unusual societies. Something that might mean people want or need to go into deep space, and we wouldn’t need the old folks at Constellation to find random macguffins for anyone to care. Give us some sci-fi jump gate or hyperlane that let’s us see neutron stars and cool nebulae, or just a colourful freaking gas cloud. Anything to make all the systems not feel like the same procedurally-generated crap.
What could have saved it was modding, but that would have required the tools to come out while interest and goodwill was still high…and it took nine months for them to materialise. Compare that to Skyrim, which got its mod tools out in three months amid an atmosphere of enthusiasm and positivity. At this moment the trending mod on Starfield’s Nexus page has 15 endorsements, compared to 108 for Fallout 4 and 278 for Skyrim Special Edition.
My ultimate wet dream is that the game becomes so good that everyone wants to play it, but every hater got blacklisted and doesn’t get to play it.
Why is this surprising? They got nothing but shit on since the day it dropped. What do people expect?
I’ve put 160 hours into it. Eventually I’ll put another 10 and finish the few last achievements. Yes it’s really that bad. 160 hours in hardest possible difficulty have been probably 80% loading screens. I saw a Youtube stream VOD a few days ago, 4 hours, I clicked at three random locations, all three were loading screens. Yes it really really was that bad. Most games suck to play but they suck to play, Starfield sucks because you never play, you just run from load screen to load screen. Even at the hardest difficulty, after like hour 20 everything gets trivial. One of those terrormorphics w/e, three shots from my gun. Everything else dies in one.
Glad I’m not the only one who does slow walk moments and cinematic walks when gaming 😂
Starfield is worse than bad, its mediocre.
I really like Starfield I like the combat the story is a bit off especially for a Bethesda game but once it gets going it’s really good and with mods such as different guns and skins and shattered space was a bit empty of a dlc but it had a good story some good loot but the base game loot of guns and other stuff is nothing like a typical looter shooter they have the same skins same perks nothing daring or crazy heck not even rare or legendary guns and space suits have their own unique designs or well anything but with mods the game feels at least somewhat better I think if Bethesda really fixes the space exploration get rid of the damned loading screens and give us stuff like more guns with different animations starfield can really be something special.
Terrible game
Personally, I love the digipick lock system.
I enjoyed Starfield so much I got the controller, headset and console skin for the series x. I don’t get the hate but I bet a lot of people are going to jump in on PS5 and Switch 2.
Yes it is, the most boring bethesda game I have ever played. It just feels so uninspired.
Watchtower almost singlehanded caused me to start a new (now 500 hours) playthrough. The idea of having to manually find the arrays and liberate systems one by one to avoid the constant dangerous attacks changed the way I played the entire game, the listening posts are insane too especially with the rare variants
I wanted to like it. I am SciFi guy, not fantasy (though I still love fantasy), so a Bethesda formula in a SciFi setting should have been my dream.
But it was just dead. A dead world. Stretch so thin you can see the seams between all of the systems.
About 300 hrs in, I had a realisation: where the heck are the vehicles and robots? Like they have them. But then no one uses them? It broke me.
I did everything (main and main side) in the game and it all just unravelled.
On a positive , I liked the ship building, got to make some dream ships and I loved the interiors, usually, and weirdly the base building. I undertook a 30 hrs multibase project to craft Vytinium Fuel Rods to power level. I did everything in a playthrough it took me to about Lvl 60. No way I was grinding to Lvl 100.
The title should be would you want to spend your time on a mindless boring game ? Or play good games
If the series has a future, this isn’t it. Putting this into the hands of more gamers isn’t win the you think it is. I can’t see Microsoft green lighting another one and quite frankly, I think that’s the right call.
Is the loading screen bonanza on an engine so old it could collect a pension bad? Yes. A 9 year old game is running laps around it with free updates
Never played Starfield, but one thing I never hear anyone say is just how absolutely FLAT OUT GORGEOUS this game looks.
I like starfield, when I play it I have fun since day one but it do need more content like more secret caves and outpost on different planets. Not gonna lie they should do a big dlc with the idea being that you fly into a black hole and appear in a few planet clusters with handmade areas and outpost and characters
Starfield is certainly not a bad game, and doesn’t deserve the level of negativity and hate it got. It disappointed many for design flaws and a lack of vision – see No Man’s Sky for an example of something closer to what people wanted for exploration for example. But there’s also a lot to enjoy, the game isn’t perfect but I’d advise anyone considering it to pick up and you’ll easily get 100hrs of fun. Plus some great mods like Watchtower for fleets and air strikes, and DarkStar to rebalance the difficulty.
Can’t wait to play Starfield on PlayStation 5 pro
I love Starfield, now.. At release, it was lame.
when the biggest bethesda shill mattie starts shitting on bethesda games it’s bad 🤣
I am not buying anything from Bethesda again , nearly every game crashes or corrupts save data . Sick and tired of it
The horrible voice acting and dated game mechanics is something Bethesda could get away with their older games but in 2023 when this game came out? Unacceptable, this recent game by Bethesda has me worried about the elder scrolls 6. I know a lot of fans have been glazing tf out of oblivion saying “we are so back” but remember guys this was OLD Bethesda a lot of people are convinced that Bethesda still got it but they don’t. Starfield was 20 years in the making and when it released it was a huge disappointment and it made a lot of players realize how Bethesda is a company who just won’t improve as a company. The elder scrolls 6 is their last hope and honestly my expectations are so low now because they hired the lead writer from dragon age the veilguard to write the elder scrolls 6, god help them🤦🏽♂️
YES, its bad and even after 10 years it will be BAD
Yes. That’s it, that’s the answer.
YES, saved you 16 minutes. use it on something good.
I was stoked for Starfield before release! I got it & it was awesome for about a month! I agree with you in that there are some really good quests in this game! They are few & far between though! After the 15th time going through NG+ I got burnt out! I was doing it to ramp up my Starborn powers, but I only use like three of them! The SS DLC that I was stoked for did nothing for The Great Serpent storyline! It was so weak & not something I thought I’d see from Starfield’s creators! Overall Starfield is a great story but unless you find every clue in the universe it is a very broken story! Starfield is now an ok game that I will keep an eye out if they ever do another DLC instead of putting stuff in the Creation Club! No Man’s Sky is the Space game that I always play! It just literally added Ship building similar to Starfield! Some people are saying the Starfield game developers quit & went to work for No Man’s Sky! I don’t think that is what happened! I think NMS got inspiration from Starfields ship builder! All of NMS content is FREE unlike having to pay for Bethesda’s Expansions/DLC’s!!!
Great video, and I hope they’re paying attention. Matty made most of my points. I love the art design and how detailed the game is, but personally I don’t care about loot or loading screens. i want things to do. I want engaging quests. No amount of quality of life tweaks or bells and whistles, or stand alone expansions will make a difference. The base game needs to be fleshed out with interesting stuff to do.
Congratulations on your ongoing success, Matty.
No man’s sky has a fun world and systems but the story is empty. A combination of the two games strengths would make an epic game, brothers.
I would play it if it came to PlayStation.
They made a game for modding. If you dont like the skybox. Change it. If you dont like the weather …change it. If you want better atmosphere …change it….lighting change it. Add your own content
Add your own poi
Add your own effects
Change the look of your armour
You can craft ypur own experience experiment with different mods see what works and what doesnt
This is the genius of Bethesda like it or not
My starfield is beautifull. Lonely and u may say a tad repetitive but i love it.
It took Matty way too long to realize this game was bad.
Something you have to understand, regarding removing those load doors between stars, is that the engine’s strength is it’s weakness here. Bethesda games will ALWAYS need load doors, interior cells, etc. The engine excels in 1 major thing- it can keep track of every lootable or just generally loose object in the entire world. Not just where, but what orientation, scale, rotation, and state (dirty, broken, etc). Other engines don’t do that, and it’s what let’s us to decorate our camps (outpost, settlement, whatever)… or fill whiterun with cheese wheels.
I don’t know why Bethesda doesn’t just make a video explaining this because their fans are smart enough to understand. It’s a compromise. If you want to remove loading doors or increase the density of NPC’s in the cities (without sacrificing stability) then you would have to extremely lower the number of objects that you could loot- and all the things that go flying when you use a gravity power in a warehouse. If you come back to that location, all those things will be right where they were- giving that up would take something fundamentally ‘Bethesda’ out of the game.
There’s a reason it’s a dead game, there’s a reason nobody other than two people are modding it, it has no real modding scene. Vast majority of mods were from 2 years ago. It died a weak after release. Nobody cares other than to laugh and piss on it’s corpse
Tl;dr yes, bad game
Bethesda deserves all the hate they got for Starfield and more. It felt like Microsoft ordered the most bland and generic space game they can put on GamePass and Bethesda delivered. And we as fans cannot let the same happen to Bethesda IPs that we actually give a damn about. I want Bethesda games to be ambitious, different, have amazing world building, trend-setting and Starfield was simply NONE of it.
Even with the plethora of mods…
even with the overhauls…
even with the updates and vehicles and expanded content….
It is STILL one of the most boring, soulless, empty games I have ever played in my entire life.
And for me, Bethesda has absolutely NO excuses.
Ironic that Bethesda recently released a post on their socials celebrating 2 years of Starfield! lmao!! Even in Elder Scrolls and ESO I just do auto lockpicking because I hate that lockpicking mini game lol.
I remember playing oblivion and I remember playing Skyrim I played starfield
And although starfield had its moments it felt like Skyrim.
“A nasa punk sci fi”
Space
Planets
Factions
Building
Maybe I’m wrong but I feel like all of that was missing
Space was just a transition where you had two short loading screens between planets
Planets while stunning were just a flat square with some caves
Factions weren’t dynamic enough
Building both outposts and ships serves zero purpose in the game
I guess I was just hoping for a more futuristic game where I could build a simple space shuttle to a full blown warship that can go through re entry burn
Even if they added manually landing and take offs it would be better rather then a cut scene
Xbox fanboys really thought this was going to be the generational game
Starfield is the only game in my adult life that took me from hype and happy expectation to abject hatred – it really felt like the devs were disrespectful of my time – EVERY system in the game was hollow, unfinished, fake unreactive mannequins asking to do pointless fetch quests, empty planets in a dead empty world, it feels like they just had CHATGPT make the game “generate a generic space game” – Everything in the game felt like the BARE minimum necessary to trick people into playing it until they see it’s an empty box of procgen sludge leading to nothing – playing it was literally miserable
The problem is that they set expectations WAY too high. It’s a fine game but nowhere near as amazing as promised so it gets a lot of hate when the problem isn’t the game itself but the promises. As I said, it’s a fine game and I enjoy it but I won’t deny reality. They definitely oversold it.
I don’t think Starfield should ever be considered good. It will always be mediocre.
Not just because it was a buggy mess at launch but because it’s just a boring an lazy game that they literally handed bare bones over to modders and Todd said, here! You do it!
The game did the cardinal sin of being bland and boring. It’s not a bad game but it does nothing that makes it stand out positively from games Bethesda themselves made. Bland and boring games are the games that get forgotten. Bad but original game can inspire people, they can create cult following. Starfield has none of that in my opinion. Though I do think there was potential here, but the final product is unfortunately just not great.
Short answer, no.
With what Bethesda has they could have done so much more over these last two years, I’m hopeful this update will be good but I won’t be hurt again.
I must be loyle to my capo
I never played StarField and never will because of the horrible reviews and feedback. But when people are angry or disappointed in a game company, people start to hate on every release. You cannot compare Skyrim to StarField. My first game from them was Morrowind, and its a popular opinion that Morrowind was the best installment by them. And i agree but Skyrim is completely unique and full of story and creativity and lots to see and do in the game. Their approach on Skyrim was completely different and it was the best game they crested last. Anyone whos says different i call bullshit. Call out shit for shit but don’t take away credit from a game that sold millions. Skyrim isn’t perfect but considering Todd was in charge and limited time and money after Oblivion failure they did a great job. That’s just my opinion though.
They need to just never update it again. They need to make games, not update shitty ones that are too far gone. If they poured money into making it “good”, it’s too late now one cares. Dude there’s like 1000000 games coming out now. Please just work on fallout and es. No one wants anything new, especially if it takes a decade to get a game
I love Starfield and the mods is amazing 🎉
sub-par version of No Man’s Sky.
It was never bad, it got a lot of unwarranted hate imo. People were expecting it to be like skyrim or fallout, and it is during some moments, but it’s hard to recreate that same type of exploration when you’re in 70 space systems or whatever. The thing that I don’t care for as much is the shoehorning of the player to be with constellation no matter what. To me, it doesn’t make sense for someone in the military, a pirate, or bounty hunter (and these are the types of characters I like to play) to want to join the scientist explorers. Imo, if they had let you find the first artifact without being a miner and let you take it to the faction of your choice, it would have been so much better. If you took the artifact to the key as a pirate character and they ended up researching it and then had you hunt them down while constellation is trying to beat you to it, then it would make sense for a pirate to try to gather all these artifacts. That sort of thing. But of course, that’s way more work.
9:49 . “getting rid of all loading screens is a big thing to ask for” “ No Man’s Sky didn’t have them, even at its buggy, rough launch. Bethesda just fucked up. Modders have been creating ‘open world’ mods for the Creation Engine for years—why hasn’t Bethesda figured out how to do it with THEIR ENGINE , THAT THEY DEVELOPED? Starfield could have been great; it should have been. But they made bad decisions at the fundamental core that make the game boring. Even with nine years of free updates like No Man’s Sky, it’s still going to feel boring because something at the base level is missing.”
Gamepass makes all those 1st party developers lazy. Why putting real effort into sth when you dont feel any pressure? Why even going the extra mile when you‘re simmering in the same pot with hundreds of other titles within a subscription model?
Upon release everybody and their mom will download your product „for free“ – Microsoft will show those numbers to their stakeholders – homework done. Accolades dont matter, just raw hours spent within a game.
That‘s why Sony wins – their studios NEED to perform in order to drive sales. And that necessity to win motivates them to achieve greatness.
Add some power armor in it, and make a link to Operation Zeta from Fallout 3 and You’ll have scores of players at least coming to try the game.
Bro this game is so bad. Normally agree with your takes, but I thought you massively over valued this game. The lock picking system would’ve worked if it’d been super rewarding to pick them, but you spend 10 minutes only to find random junk in a chest.
Star wars genius mod makes it 10x better
something that doesn’t get mentioned as much as other shortcomings like exploration and gameplay, is both the aesthetics and world building which visually are down right ugly and just not as interesting when compared to Fallout and Elder Scrolls
is it worth playing if I just want to play to story/campaign?
there’s just something about the faces of the NPC’s which give me the creeps.
Its all the load screens ruined it for me
Game is so bad, Todd needs to be fired
Yes: just like you, I enjoyed many aspects of Starfield for 100 + hours. So, challenging epic space battles you barely survive and oppressive environments with great rewards on planets if you overcome challenges would make a great dlc… Not that hard because the developers have the right foundation…
Lowkey it’s worse
For me the loading screen and a bunch of people talking without proper facial animation killed the game
It’s not bad but it could be a lot better
Not the NMS jumpscare while I’m sitting here playing it lol
Not a bad game, not a good game, just meh. For everything they did right, they did something else wrong, constantly thought that when I was playing, and I went as far to 100% all achievements, so I did enjoy it to a degree. Best thing of the game was the ship building, it was super cool and fun, that I will defend. I see the vision when playing the game but it doesn’t work out. The lore is so cool, with all the war shit that happened and all the atrocities, giant mech suits, chemical warfare, creating aliens to drop on the enemy, etc. You hear all of this cool and dark ass shit in game but never get to experience it, nothing in the game is as cool as all the stuff that happened before the game takes place, like bro why didn’t the game just take place during the giant war that went on? There’s a planet I forget the name but you see a wartorn landscape with giant mechs and ship wreckage all around, like come on, shits so cool, but again, you never experience anything cool like that. The game is also just to safe. Like you have all this cool lore then you go all around the starfield universe and it’s all feels super like PG, there’s just like no grit anywhere in the game. All the characters are to safe feeling and same with the cities. Neon for example should be gritty as hell, and also a sorta fucked up place to be, but even neon feels PG. It’s like they were afraid to show actual grit in the game, maybe it’s cause they worked with nasa for the game, so maybe that was a requirement who knows, but regardless the whole PG feeling of the games world was a letdown. Also story sucks and characters as well. The game overall feels like it should have come out before or immediately after fo4, feels super dated in every way. A big thing that’s frustrating is we know Bethesda can do better but chose not to. Then when the game came out they kept responding to fans who left negative reviews explaining why they’re wrong and why the games fun. Like brother, I understand a lot of work went into the game but if so many people dislike your product, maybe that’s saying something. I want to see star field succeed, it has potential, but I don’t think Bethesda will ever do what needs to be done. Hopefully the next dlc is actually good, but we have zero reason to think it will be, like look at shattered space. A dlc that feels like it was ripped from the main game, and was just super short and mid. I could go on, but will end it here, have so many negative and positive thoughts about the game
I loved Starfield. My 2023 game of the year and current game of the generation. Main story quest line was superb as were the characters. Faction quests were excellent and the vast majority of the side quests were great. Side quests alone was over 200 as I had them all listed on a spreadsheet. Overall, the best quests since The Witcher 3 and two years after Starfield, no game has surpassed it in this regard.
Combat/gameplay depends on how you play the game. I played it strictly as a first person shooter and loved it. Even at 30FPS at launch, it still felt great to play because it was fluid and responsive. Lock picking mini-game was great. I enjoyed that because it was challenging at times but not to where you get frustrated. I agree with the loot not matching the level of the lock(s). The lock picking shown in the video from Fallout 4 and basically all other games is horrible. You just rotate the pick until you hit the spot and hope it doesn’t break. That crap is horrible and I don’t care what game it is. At least the lock picking in Starfield is something different and challenging once you get used to it.
As for exploration, too many people in my opinion compare it to Fallout/The Elder Scrolls which should only be done if it’s the first game in those respective IP’s because it’s not an open world. It’s an open universe with 1000+ planets in the game. The vast majority of it all is generated so why anyone would waste their time exploring it all is beyond me. I avoided doing this completely. Plus with 200+ side quests, Faction Quests and the main story quest line, I didn’t need any more content as I put over 500 hours into the game.
Ship combat was awesome and exactly what I was hoping for. Fast paced, arcadish and none of this simulation bullshit that completely takes the fun and enjoyment out of it. Overall, the biggest issue I had was the loading screens when going in/out interiors and traveling within Atlantis. The loading screens going from ground to space or planet to planet never bothered me because otherwise, it would just be three minutes of watching your ship fly there like in Star Wars Outlaws. No thanks to that. I rather have the 30 second loading screen for this aspect.
Worse part is that if people actually played Starfield for what it was as opposed to what they wanted it to be which was never ever going to happen once they told you that there was over 1000 planets, I believe that most people would have enjoyed it a lot more because the actual content that I mentioned above is excellent. Two years later, people are still hating on the game despite the fact that these same people could simply go play another game instead.
im ready for the next dlc tbh
Yes, it is
I finally started Starfield 270 hours ago. I waited for it to be on sale because I was afraid I wouldn’t love it.
I love it. Sure, it has some issues. After playing Kingdom Come Deliverance 1 and 2, it really becomes apparent how shallow the gameplay is when it comes to your choices. The repeated use of structures gets old. The combat doesn’t have much depth. Collecting your starborn powers is a drag. I absolutely hate floating around. What’s the point? Give me the power ffs. I feel like when you max level skills, it should feel like it. It mostly doesnt. These are probably my biggest gripes.
All of that said, I really do love Starfield. It’s just mindless fun. I really didn’t like Fallout 4. Starfield has kinda scratched that itch.
I’m really optimistic about the coming dlc. I really hope it pulls the game together while opening up more opportunities for mod devs. We will see.
I won’t lie but I forgot about this game, that’s how forgettable it is. How the lore doesn’t make sense since how come there is only that one city on a few planets even though the humans could expand to different parts of it. How in the game you “fly” to planets to planet even though it’s just a loading screen, like we are in 2025 and we are still using it even though in my experience it sometimes crash. How the planets feel almost the same with some different here and there and it gotten so bland that I use a mod to make the planets a bit more interesting.
And the real cherry on top is the lack of romance options, just the four main characters and how there no aliens to make this game feel alive. And no not the alien animals that in the game but real aliens with there own language, culture and stuff. They wanted to make a “realistic” syfy game but it removes any kind of charms, ideas and or creativity to keep me invested. Honestly this game needs a hard restart and fix everything from the bland story’s, the mechanics of the game, to adding things to make the game better and not over used the mods since It’s the mods are the only thing that keeping the game alive.
And tbh that no man sky update feels like a the starfield that should be in the game but starfield felt more like a beta test then the full complete game.
Bethesda got the money and could spend time remaking what didnt work. They didnt though.
I was definitely disappointed that there is no exploration. As I jumped to more planets and seeing the same auto generated structs really discouraged me from playing the game.
Yep,its garbage
no there’s Ur Answer
Corporate Factions should be added as our direct competitors or partners centered around our outposts and resources. Have them higher the Ecliptic Mercenaries to intagonize our outposts and disrupt our shipments to. Also have a LIST quest centered around growing all of the veriuos settlements around the settled system. Why can’t settlements grow into productive towns? Perhaps give us an option to acquire some of these poi’s that we liberate from GalBank just to get the bank more involved in Starfield. Sciences labs and other factories could produce rare items that we either contract out or keep to hrow our own business. At over 1,700 hrs, I just want to build my own story. Join a corporate faction or partner up with them or don’t and simply out perform them and drive them into dust while building up our empire and hopefully lay claim to an entire solar system.
Bethesda has never, not once, made a great game. All of their simp fans are to blame for creating a monster. Starfield never looked great from the trailers. Anyone with a brain could see it a mile away and yet the fanboys gave them money and complain like a battered girlfriend and keep coming back to them. Fight me!
I think it is a good game that was held back by the repeating points of interest. Just an absolute buzzkill to go to one planet to another planet and get the same POI back to back especially in the early game. Really had a good time playing it though and hope it doesn’t get completely abandoned.
I hated Starfield and I’m the biggest Bethesda defender (I loved F76 from launch😢). The moment i found out I can’t kill a lot of the NPCs because they’re all “important” or a lot of the decisions are insignificant is when I dropped the game. Exploration is boring and felt like I’ve played this exact game but better in other games. I went back to Fallout 4 after this game. Combat is better though…. But that’s it. I hate the customization focus that Bethesda has just committed to. I get it in F4 settlements but it feels like all these resources are going to the wrong aspect of the game. Focus on world building and exploration for the love of god Bethesda and quit this generated worlds/quest bs.
It got hate because it was stupidly repetitive, outdated and tedious. Not enough variety in the prefab buildings, or their location relative to where you land, that spawn on planets. No NPC AI comparable to what was done 20 years ago. Barren gameplay for ten minutes at a time to reach places of disinterest.
Just objectively poor design.
76 “turned it around” by reversing the stupid idea of no NPCs. Starfield will never truly improve because it’s bad on several fundamental levels that can’t be solved by simply adding something
Game is dead
Its terrible
Starfield is great. Over 500 hours for me. I think people hate it because they expected it to be something it wasn’t. It competes with Oblivion as my favorite Bethesda game.
It just crashes soooo freaking much. It was unplayable at launch and even a year later.
its still bad in a nutshell – from pronoun to load screen hell
every member is mid characterization wise at most, the surface level appeal of high visuals and branding
paid mods still is a no, putting more behind it isn’t gonna make it worth it
Just let it go bro. Starfield is what it is. What you really want is a new game.
Starfield is a good game. It’s not a great game. Todd overhype and general internet cynicism have ruined the reputation of a super alright game.
Been playing for 2 years and still love it!
When Cyberpunk 2077 is out there, why play this game? It kinda scratches a similar itch, Bethesda is just not hitting these days
I stopped seeing starfield as a space exploration game. Out the window. And started seeing it as Skyrim in space. I’ve been playing it none stop. Yes it’s unacceptable that everything is a loading screen and it legit feels like each planet with a city is a town. Like I said space Skyrim with extra steps.
Personally, I didn’t like the Digi-pick mingame at first, but after just a few hours I came to absolutely love it because it’s a nice change of pace from typical lock-picking and it’s really not complicated at all, plus it’s incredibly forgiving.
Loading screens and the picklock system I can let slide, but after encountering the same exact cave POI back to back on three different moons I had to just drop it. If they intend to use the same generative tech in ES6 then I have little hope it can retain interest in the community.
As for the idea that future updates may fix the game akin to 76, I expect them to drop support shortly after the PS5/Switch 2 release similar to FO4 to cut their losses. 76 was made to be their cash cow as a live service game, of course they weren’t going to abandon it, but Starfield is a single player game that Bethesda will milk through Creations rather than genuine overhauls to game systems.
This game will not have a recovery story. The greed has moved on and would sooner give you a 2. Keep eyes on AA or smaller let AAA burn and get reborn cause this trash has to die for a reset to happen.
Yes it is. Collectors edition on PC a couple days off work for early access period and nothing but disappointment. Haven’t been that excited and disappointed from a game I think ever.
The best Bethesda RPG is Red Dead Redemption 2 tbh
Striking while the iron is dead cold.
At this point, I’d rather bethesda quite updating the game and let modders make it better, all they do with new updates is just breaking mods and making the game potentially unplayable.
This game was ass and shows how outdated Bethesda’s game design is. Any other RPG is superior to this. It makes me retroactively realize how shallow their games are.
I kinda wish that they would have taken the Dragon Age Origins route with the character creation. I wanted to basically play as the space trucker and lean into that that. Do some delivering with smuggling and having to avoid pirates and law enforcement and such. I know you technically can. But what i mean is i wish that the background you chose had a bigger impact on how you started the story and you could have more quests specific to your character. I hope that makes sense.
There’s just no reason to do anything the game has to offer. There’s no unique weapons, all the loot in general is bland samey, the locations are all the same, I like the game as an idea and it’s not the worst but every time I play it I just feel like I’m doing nothing and getting no enjoyment so I don’t play it
its woke garbage. too many girl bosses.
I’m thinking that TES 6 will be better due to Starfield being problematic, and BGS learning from that…
Starfield is amazing game, easily a 9/10. Why are all your Bethesda videos negative now? You really lost your way dude.
I had fun with Starfield when it came out. I’m thinking about playing again due to all the updates, and after they improve interplanetary flight/exploration. With the new IP flight mode, and events to encounter within star systems.
I’ve played through starfield 3 times, I still like the game, Bethesda has made better games, but I like starfield for what it is, it’s a decent game
I think starfield would have been a better game if, instead of exploring the galaxy. It was just exploring our solar system. Therefore they could put more detail into the Planets and cities.
The people I feel the most sorry for are the ones who actually like the game. They’re going to get shafted the most.
Yes, yes it is.
I really wanted to like Starfield. An RPG game where you get to build your own ship, travel in space, and explore other planets? That’s what I signed up for. I remember feeling so disappointed because Starfield was supposed to the game I’ve always wanted.
Even if Starfield released in 2014, it still would’ve been dated as fuck
Yes
I liked it at launch but the bad ending with no actual answers and odd new game plus kept me away from a 2nd play through
Yeah, it’s pretty bad. I have no hope for TES 6.
Nah its really good, people just wanted another no man sky, not a bethesda game.
Pay for a sixty dollar game then pay for creations for content that the base game should have….and matty thinks this is a positive thing…I am scared to see what the financing of Matt’s game is gonna look like jesus
Matty owlcst is making g an expanse rpg and there’s also that game called exodus…mass effect like rpgs are coming
I loved the game at launch and still do. Sucks for anyone who didn’t enjoy it as much but oh wells
People have said it before, but they should have started with 10-ish systems and jammed them full of hand made content and all the main quest content. Then have an outer shell (outer rim?) of more procedurally created and barren worlds they could expand to.
And the systems needed to be fully navigable, both between worlds and from the surface to space. Hello games figure it out nine years ago. No excuse. If your engine couldn’t do it, you should have used a different engine.
Starfield is my favorite RPG that Bethesda has released, and I’ve played them all. I’ve been starborn 10 times and still to this day when I turn it on I’m still finding new things. Can’t wait for the next update, looks like a new faction.
Holy moly two years?? Nah that’s crazy. I feels like time hasn’t passed for me.
I pay for game pass just to build ships. That’s gotta be a mental disorder right.
I haven’t come back..after less than 100 hrs..the visual aren’t very high fidelity….exploration is boring….and yet he still glazed bethesda for their outdated formula
To me the answer is NO MANS SKY!!! that’s the reason I know they can do better.
You really need to jump into No Man’s Sky right NOW. Do an expedition start. I think that’ll give you some of what you are craving.
I love the IP, not the implementation.
The problem was they tried to shoehorn the game into their existing tech, which is outdated.
They should abandon that tech and restart afresh with a new Nomans Sky like seamless universe tech.
Shaun Murray has explained how it’s done via GDC video’s for the world to see and Bethesda has the financial clout behind it to hire the talent and spend the years necessary developing this new tech for their future games. I hope they have already started this.
This new universe tech would in my opinion be the foundation for all of their future games. Including Starfield.
Just because you can create infinite procedural worlds doesn’t mean that every game you make with it has to be infinite in size and scope.
I see no problem restricting the infinite procedural universe down to something more limited in order to hand craft a more specific rpg experience.
But it needs to be built on new tech.
The main story was also very weak imo.
I love Starfield. It took me awhile to get into it and I had my quarrels with it at times, but I appreciated how unique the setting is for a sci fi game and ultimately ended up enjoying it more than I initially I expected. I would actually go as far as to say I enjoyed my time with Starfield more than Fallout 4.
What i expect is they can do mass effect vibes plus no man sky world of exploration, what we get is far from expectation, we all hype because developer is bathesda, but yes it failed from every aspect and todd blame the technology right now still can not hold the idea of making starfield 😆😆
Starfield performed bad because it lacked the one redeeming quality most of the Bethesda games have – Exploration.
Unlike Skyrim, Fallout, Oblivion the exploration and sense of wonder was replaced with loading screen and randomly generated empty patches of land.
👩🦰 “How dare you”
I can’t fly 😅
Years later and people are still defending starfield!!?? is it just me or do people give Microsoft, a super-giant corporation, way too much leeway? Starfield isn’t a “bad” game, but it’s not even close to what was promised/hyped up to be.
I often skip lock picking because of the lame loot behind master locks.
If some is locking something behind higher level security, they probably have something of more value to secure.
Ill die on this hill, But what killed this game is it was WAY TOO BIG. Smaller system or two, maybe 3 and pack those places full with exploration. Would have solved 80% of the problems
2 years old is not retro.
The problem for me was the copy and paste environments. Caves and facilities being exactly the same and the enemy placement was the same as well. It took away the immersion.
ill save everybody 16 mins starfield is complete trash and was a waste of a game. Bethesda would have spent their time better working on ES6 or FO5
Imho, the base game is bad but with mods it’s totally enjoyable.
…yes
Starfield might have been bad when it was first launched…. I bought it when the first DLC dropped and then it was good. At east worth a 8/10 score. I really looking forward to the new DLC as it addresses the New game+ story line.
I was a massive BGS fan up till and including Fallout 4. I have hundreds and hundreds of hours in each of their games up till then. I didn’t purchase Starfield, and still don’t want it. I’ve watched extended parts of it in in various streams (while avoiding as much main story as i can), and it just looks boring to me. It came at a time where i got used to BG3 writing, dialogue, and voice acting as well, and switching to watch Starfield… well i just found myself cringing away from it. The writing and performance of a lot of it seemed so bad. Then, the more i watched, i realised i wasn’t remotely interested in the exploration either, which used to be my favourite thing with BGS games. I feel sad about it, and I really hope BGS manage to find their way again.
I liked Starfield, I didn’t love it. My biggest gripe is that they have the animations to mask loading screens already in place. Take No Man’s Sky for example, when you warp to a new system or use a portal there is an animation that plays. Sure it’s a loading screen, but unlike Starfield, it never fades to black or has a screenshot that pops up with the loading icon in the corner. I just wish they could mask the flying to the surface or hyperspace loading screens with animations. Obviously in a perfect world it would be seamless but I understand the limitations of Creation. It just kills immersion so hard when after every jump or flight to orbit it has to load. I don’t mind it as much in ES or Fallout because there is so much time between actually seeing a loading screen that it doesn’t hurt too much but for every one you’d go through in the other games, you go through like seven in Starfield.
yes
Well I have a suggestion for everyone that is complaining. Build a game and show us how it’s done!
too many load screens, really bad quest design, and very very bad writing. This game is DOA and there’s nothing anyone can do about it.
I was insanely hyped for Starfield, just like I was for Fallout 4, Skyrim, Fallout 3, Oblivion.. And unlike all those games. it let me down.. Probably because I was an Elite player. If you have ANY experience with space sims or bethesda games, you quickly realize Starfield is both and neither. Its 20% Bethesda game and 10% Space Sim.. The other 70% is dogs squat. It should have been 75% Space Sim and 25% Bethesda game. They absolutely dropped the ball. MAYBE.. Maybe this rumored cruise mode and some patches to the POI system and a patch to the terrible mission board system will bring it up to snuff enough to be a good game. But its so unlikely they will fix this all.
I’ll actually buy Starfield VR if Todd makes it.
Bethesda RPGs were never any good.
Starfield was an odd experience. Playing it I enjoyed it enough. I played it almost 200 hours so it was doing *something* right. But it was definitely disappointing. By the end I was ready for it to be done. Previous Bethesda games I always replayed them within a year of release, when a new dlc pack would come out it was a welcome excuse to replay the whole game. Starfield though I can’t see myself replaying it anytime soon. It’s not anywhere near as bad as a lot of people say, but it’s also a significant step down from anything bethesda has released (FO76 aside) since Morrowind
One large fully explorable planet packed with content and expeditions to it’s moons would have been better.
For me the writing just fell flat on its face. Loved the atmosphere and ship building, but the lack of choice in quests and terrible dialogue ruined it. The loading screens was a whole separate problem.
I love the parts of star field that don’t suck
All the fast travel stuff is what killed my experience fast travel should be a option not mandatory and no I dont want to install a mod ..if I need a mod to enjoy the game then I don’t want to play it
Yeah it fuckin does
Yes it is
For me, Starfield and Cyberpunk 2077 sit on opposite sides of the same coin. Both are “acceptable”games, but massive step-down for the studios
I think people followed the hate train and didn’t actually give it a actual chance the no cars was ridiculous and no 60 fos on release was no okay eathier for the type of game this is but I think it’s still 7/10
No Mans sky just released the new Starfield update, allowing players to build ships just like Starfield. Multiple players can even get up and walk around the ship mid flight and in space.
yes it is bland and bullcrap
Being forced to endure the constant nagging from the Shattered Space dlc impacts replaying the game. Despised it on first play, would cut it out if I could but Bethesda and Steam in their great wisdom think everyone wants to put up with it on a replay. It’s not like it adds anything worth while in the way of gear or adventure.
Not bad just the definition of a 5.5 out of 10 game
It was close to be huge but the writing’s style disaster, the fake RPG points, lack of epicness and some bad technical choices made it a huge disappointment…So close 😢
Fight me, the lock picking mini game is fun.
They should start by: populating empty planets, at least the main ones with quests and things to discover… second add back systems from the previous games missing here, deconstruction, weapon and armor fixing, stats, better settlement building, robot building… and then add new dlc stories…
You know what makes me buy me consoles?
Fallout 3 and Oblivion, had to have the Xbox 360
Skyrim with Kinect.
Fallout 4, I need an Xbox One.
You want a PS5 or Xbox whatever it’s called? No? Why not?
There is no “must play” game. Five hundred plus for a new console, yeah, forget it. Modern gaming is trash.
Bethesda needs to add more POIs.
Just played 2-3 hours and knew it was not for me. I can see many other comments echoing the same thing. It’s really only for a few gamers who may be more modest in their expectations.
A lot of things they could have done better but that can be said about most games especially nowadays.. most important thing is they take steps to make this game better via updates and new content.. i really enjoy starfield and think people really go overboard with the hate.. still think this game has massive potential.. i just don’t know if Bethesda can help starfield reach it.. i dont know if Bethesda even realise it’s potential..
Starfield is shit, was shit and will be shit. Let it fade away already
76 is still the worst Fallout.
So, don’t give them too much credit.
2:45 I thought I was the only one lmao it feels so much more cool and thematic when you play like this 💀
Modern gaming is trash.
“Fallout in space”… nope. That’s not it, man.
The game is still a 6 at best.
… and I do not recommend. It is not worth your time, and they don’t respect your time.
Gotta be the most underrated game of the 2020s, truly a great 80 hour story. I mean seriously if it wasn’t bethesda that made this, and everyone rating everything but the game they got (most people think, oh what would this have been if no procedural generation or settlements, oh what if they just made ES6 or F5) this would be rated around 5 points out of 100 under bg3 imo. It’s truly a phenomenal open world RPG with the best stories we’ve seen from Bethesda in a long time, we rate outer worlds extremely highly even though it is linear, not open world, and you’re only likely to get 40 hours out of a full playthrough.
I just really get tired of the sentiment we see from all these clickbait view hungry channels that just think “make bethesda critique essay, get views!” instead of actually just making videos they care about the way you do. I can’t count the number of channels I’ve never heard of before I see taking up space on my recommended, that are literally just the prototypical anti bethesda todd howard face thumbnail, and “what KILLED bethesda!” type titles. It’s really getting to me man. Objectively the oblivion remaster is a worse game than starfield by bethesda standards, the optimization is objectively horrible, and it’s significantly more buggy than SF was on release, with much less patches coming out over time, SF was patched multiple times a week in the first 2 weeks. I’m not hating on Oblivion whatsoever, I’m just trying to make the point that the goalposts were moved for this game and I’ll never be tired of it.
Am I disappointed they gave me 2 hours of honestly tedious settlement gameplay, instead of just baking in crafting into the ships, of course. Does that knock the game down from a 92-95 to a 85? no.
Am I disappointed they gave me procedural dungeons, where by the last couple missions, I knew where every single loot drop and enemy was on planets I’d never been before? Big time, would definitely be nice to have had those 20-50 devs working on the codebase for other games (the people designing a procedural system are not the same ones writing stories or level design generally) to speed up the dev cycle? Yup. Does this actually make the game WORSE? hell no, it’s more features and honestly it is a call back to Daggerfall’s procedural generation. It certainly doesn’t take the game 5-10 points lower in review score whatsoever, it’s literally an extra feature…
Do the cities feel relatively bland compared to Skyrim cities, and do the lore of the game injustice? Big time, this is actually the main gripe I have that stops this game from truly being as good as The Elder Scrolls or Fallout, the universe and numbers of people doesn’t fit the apparently space faring multiplanetary civilizations, and it breaks immersion talking to two planets that hate each other but they both have a max of 250 people living there. Probably goes down 2-5 points for me on that.
The update fiascos are a blow to the heart though, and definitely in hindsight should rate the game lower, the initial hate people had for this game was a huge disservice to those we credit for reviewers, but the fact I was sold a season pass, and they didn’t follow through on their promises, is lowkey infuriating. This game deserved at least 2 extra dlc storylines adding usable buildings, floors to previous buildings elavators etc and extra true NPC people and/or entire zones to the capital cities we explored, and we got one lackluster DLC I haven’t yet been interested enough in replaying the game to check out in hopes of mod makers adding truly unique content.
Overall though I mean seriously we have an amazing 80 hour RPG with truly awesome space combat, and although it’s not my thing, great shipbuilding, and seriously the best side questing of any rpg I’ve played besides KCD2 or BG3 in recent memory.
I can’t wait until they release Starfield on the PS5 Pro 🙌💯
Short answer: Yes it was terrible
Long answer: Absolutely horrendous game that even the modders gave up on it
I’m actually playing it rn. Love it still. Not sure youll ever come around to this game.
I liked Starfield but definitely has it’s issues like a ton of empty planets just for the sake of having them and boring exploration. Very much a 6-7/10 game
I’m be back next year to watch the 2026 iteration of this
Paid mods is a slap in the face. I don’t care about achievements, I just want to enjoy a single player experience without opening my wallet. Paid mods is the greediest shit I’ve ever seen in a single player game. As much as I love TES and FO, I hope Bethesda fails.
In what world was starfield ever bad
Yes it’s awful should’ve made fallout 5 instead imo
Before it came out it had “game of the gen” hype now it’s like “Is it that bad?” lol.
Ive been playing starfield since it came out. Started on gamepass, and liked it so much that i bought a physical copy. I had zero expectations going in, and thats why i think i like it so much. While playing it, I’ve noticed quite a few characteristics I would attribute to Bethesda. but it’s definitely not Skyrim in space or Fallout in space. It’s definitely its own game.
I hate revisionist shit, the game was bad if it wasn’t everyone would be playing it and making mods
Still really enjoy Starfield, started a new playthrough as a female (AKA body type 2) after getting to a pretty high level as body type 1. The bugs I run into probably can be traced to mods.
I remember watching a former quest designer talk about his work on Skyrim, detailing how mindlessly ticking off boxes on a checklist make for a boring open world experience.
Pretty funny to see how Starfield’s idea of fun was doing literally that.
Bethesda is a rotten husk of a company now.
Yeah
Bethesdas best dlc being Far harbor?
What about Bloodmoon?
Oh right, this was no dlc, but a full fledged add-on!
I reinstalled starfield for the snake faction.
The mysterious planet nobody knows the coordinates of.
One of the first thinks you see there: a chunks shop.
Yeah, eff bethesda.
Deleted the game again.
No more bethesda games.
No more money from me.
I 100% the game when it first came out. And I will absolutely never touch it again. I loathed playing it. It honestly felt like a modern KOTOR 2 with how the ship and space travel worked. And that isnt supposed to be a compliment. I shouldnt feel like im playing a backwards game. Everything about it felt fake. No love was put into it, truly. Which is so hard to believe it came from the same studio and creative minds that brought Fallout and Elder Scrolls to Life
Starfield is not a bad gamer per se. It just doesnt feel good to play. It feels lifeless and I am left unsatisfied when I’m done with a play session of it
This game like Skyrim, would be an awesome game at the 2010s. 2023 was expecting more and they didn’t even consider that they needed to upgrade some things from Skyrim going forward. The talent at Bethesda peaked at that era and didn’t evolve at all. Just look at Cyberpunk 2077 and that released way earlier than this.
“For me, Starfield was a game worth playing through 1 time and 1 time only. The lack of rewarding a player through exploration in a vast universe with hundreds of planets to explore just didn’t hit the mark like exploring one world. Starfield makes me come to realize that as much as I would love to have 2 regions in a mainline Elder Scrolls game. It isn’t necessary. Bethesda needs to stick to just one world per game.”
Starfield is a space game, unlike Elder Scrolls and Fallout. The game could have been a success if the game was at least 90% smaller. Instead of focusing on 1000 planets. Focus on 1 galaxy per game. Starfield 2 could have been in a brand new galaxy. The game is too big and too empty. Some planets could have had exploration based on each faction in the game. While others focused on the main story. We could have gotten a DLC instead of Shattered Space. Actually, I like the name Shattered Space, but the DLC could have been traveling through a crack in the galaxy that had a few more planets to on the other side that disappeared eons ago by a black hole. As for what could have caused the crack to open. Choices made.
i think bethesda, obsidian, etc games should be held to the standard of their former games. they got sold to microsoft, microsoft said all the right things (they will give them time, space, funding)
With Mods it’s the shiznit.
I just don’t understand what Bethesda is thinking anymore:
– Players love exploring their big hand-made worlds. Decides to make a procedurally generated map with copy-pasted POIs.
– Known for making games where players don’t finish the main story. Decides to make a multiverse story and expects people to play NG+ over and over again.
– Makes a sci-fi game with space magic. Doesn’t include any alien races, just humans.
– Main faction is all about exploring the unknown. Every fucking planet already has human facilities every 200 meters.
Terrible game made by an even worse company
Yes it is bad
The digipick system wasn’t that bad imo. I found it enjoyable.
I appreciate Bethesdas effort to improve the game from her snd not abandon it. Starfield in theory is the perfect (realistic) space game.
Yes–bad in some interesting and iconic ways. It’s impossible to underestimate how much time I’ve spent watching multi-hour “Starfield is bad” documentaries.
There has been minimum content support post launch (dlc and bug fixes) compared to what other smaller companies provide to their customers. They have not even supported Starfield compared to their previous games, given the time frame.
Yes, this game is complete garbage and that salutation guy is a shill
Before I watch this. Referring to the thumbnail… My first thought was “6.8 is a good score. 5 is a good game. 6.8 is pretty good. Some of the best and my most favorite games in the world all got 6-7 scores.”
Ok lemme watch for some context.
Remember, Starfield is Todd Howard’s Magnum Opus.
this game sucked, $70 wasted. Makes me not even want to buy the next fallout when it never comes out
Cope. The video.
It was just nothing
Matty I appreciate your able to be a based fan boy.
I played it earlier this year, it’s pretty bad. It’s not terrible by any means, but coming from Bethesda it’s a huge letdown. The Elder Scrolls and Fallout are so much more fun, engaging and interesting. It’s too bad, the game had massive potential.
It’s still boring. The economy is still broken. The only fun mission is still the USC. I thought for a moment we were going to get a bounty hunter questline but it ended up just being 1 20 minute mission for $10
I keep going back to try and get into it and everytime i get annoyed with the constant fast traveling and loading screens. They did this to themselves lol
It’s pretty shite.
I fn love Starfield. Best Bethesda game I’ve played apart from Morrowind. Morrowind was peak
they are never going to turn it around, bethesda is dead dude…
It’s honestly soo depressing talking about BGS studios deterioration, it’s not that they have remained stagnant over the years, it’s that they’ve gotten worse outside of graphics and gunplay.
I’ve written many of essays in the comments of how I feel about Starfield, how they seemingly take the wrong lessons and instead of pursuing the aspects that people like about previous games, they dumb those down because they want to implement their own additions alongside, with Starfield I wasn’t hyped for it after 4 and 76, I pretty much suspected as much that they hadn’t learned a thing because keep in mind that Starfield almost also had a voiced protagonist.
It’s extremely boring. It has the facade of grandeur but it’s shallow and limited in imagination.
I never really thought it was that bad to begin with. It just wasn’t that good either.
I was craving a traditional Bethesda RPG so I still went ahead and put like 115 hours into it. It just had the most of that play time being kind of boring or straight up unenjoyable compared to any other Bethesda title
Fallout 4 really left me wanting because the dialogue system was trash. It was like it was trying to be Mass effect only way worse and just not what I had become accustomed to in a Bethesda RPG. I like to major in things like speech/charisma. And there’s like zero reason to do so in fallout 4. You only ever get four dialogue choices and sometimes two of them are the exact same. Never mind the fact that it doesn’t tell you what you’re about to say
So it just felt more like this post-apocalyptic looter shooter rather than a great RPG. Closer to something like borderlands only without all the interesting guns lol
What it still had was an enticing game world to explore though. Bethesda is still so good at environmental layout and storytelling
Which is totally absent from starfield…. So even though I got all the dialogue choices back, exploration sucked. Exploring space is the worst part about this game that is centered around a group of space explorers
It’s wild
I did a planet survey mission once and spent 2 hours and was still stuck at like 89% and it was the most boring tedious thing I’ve ever done.
I also just didn’t care much for the main companions or the main quest.
That being said, once I started just doing factions and side quests and just letting the game lead me around the galaxy instead of trying to explore it on my own. It became much more enjoyable. No place ever seemed to really wear out its welcome because I wasn’t sticking around there exploring hoping for something to find. I was just going to different places which looked and felt different and I was there to do one specific thing in one specific spot and leave shortly after
So that’s when I found it addicting because there are indeed still some great side quests and I quite enjoyed a couple of the faction quest lines. I will always remember being the debt collector for Gal Bank where the guy sending you on all these missions is acting like the debt collector with a heart of gold
I also really loved shipbuilding, and as such I really loved the side mission for Walter where you have to go in and dictate how his company handles building their next ship to launch for sale. That mission was hilarious
But, when I finished the game I just had zero incentive to replay it. It tries to do this unique new game plus system and it sounds that way in theory but in practice I went through the new game plus three times and never saw a single variation. I only ever saw the same exact thing that I saw the first time around.
So it’s really the only Bethesda RPG that I’ve never had any desire to do a new playthrough or a new character. Not even mods made me want to come back
So I don’t know. People were giving IGN shit when they gave it a seven out of 10 but like, this is one of the most seven out of 10 games I’ve ever played. Good, but not great. Just you know, average.
After watching this video my opinion of this game is even lower then before.
Cowboys in space. Wizards in space. With added loading screens…..
How does your studio expand and the quality gets worse..
Why play Starfield when you can play any other game?
Yes, yes it is
Every argument and critics are valid but no one talks about the research and upgrade feature, that killed the game for me: having to grab specific material to research the upgrade and then having to find even more specific materials just to finally upgrade your weapon or armor…
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. This game should never have been, the only way I’m even remotely able to play it is with the Star Wars Genesis Modlist and even that only does so much. (they made a beautiful finger painting)
Two years later and rocks and sticks are still more enjoyable than Starfield. Hoping for better in what’s to come from Bethesda next.
the writing is just horrendous
Digipicks aren’t nearly as bothersome or difficult as he makes them sound. Just learn how it works, and it’s easy even to complete Master-level picks.
I just think Starfield is too ambitious for the the first title in the IP, I would have preferred a game focused on a single solar system with deep planets
Probably one of the few that feel this way but the main reason I don’t use creations is because I want everything in these rpgs (really fallout) to be canon. If Bethesda would come out and say hey this paid mod (fallout London for example) was canon then I would play it and spend money in a heart beat without question
I can see some of the logic behind much of the complaints people have but holy cow I cannot stand the “the game should’ve only been 5 planets” NO. That’s boring. That’s not exploring space, in the slightest. At that point just play mass effect.
Yes.
To be honest, the worst thing about Starfield is the lame main quest. It was just a glorified quest. And a lot of main quest are fetch quest, but to make it truly good you have to have something cool around it. For instance, there were a few times when getting the relic was interesting But they should’ve had a crazy new adventure for each fragment even if it meant lowering the amount of fragments you get. Quality over quantity. Another major issue with Starfield was on the procedural generated POI. It was literally the same. They needed to make them more handcrafted or at least had enough different POI that you didn’t really run into the same thing over and over again. Another major hurdle with Starfield was what Maddie talked about which was the exploration. It’s trash. You have to do a million loading screens just to jump from one star system to the other. There’s a million ways to mask a loading screen especially these days
Its a ok game. The mods make it more enjoyable but the core mechanics still hold it back
It’s a colossal disappointment can’t believe I preordered this garbage Bethesda won’t trick me again I know who works for them now and they aren’t game developers they are woke activists
Better than the outer worlds. Somehow better writing.
Creations have come a long way? Yes, and no. Modders for some reason are using the same planets that Bethesda used for their main game. You have all these empty planets that modders should be using and instead it’s more content on the same planets. I think that’s pretty lazy tbh.
Starfield Failed , That’s it ……….Move on
It’s disappointing and boring which is a shame
5:30 that was the freaking problem with that quit quest; it was from Fallout. I wanted to play something NEW. jayzus you’ll do anything to suck them off for everything but making a new franchise
What’s the point of opening anything with that silly lock mini game – there’s never any loot worth finding ! Even watching this in the video is enough for me not to reinstall , total tripe game and that’s an opinion from a fallout fan
This will age like milk 🥛
Crazy that Mass Effect did it better 20 years ago. At least in terms of the fantasy, worldbuilding, and exploration.
Very different games, but ME does a lot of what Starfield tries to do but better
Yes.
I absolutely loved this game. Pre ordered a year in advance. Took a week off work, grinded to ng10 and put ridicules hrs in last year. But I know it could be way better, and that’s such a shame
I enjoyed Starfield and think there is a lot of untapped potential there. I’m hoping they follow the example of No Man’s Sky and Cyberpunk 2077, both of which were received worse upon release. It’s totally beyond me why Bethesda doesn’t release more regular content and improvements while they are obviously capable of doing so. For example, how difficult would it be to release new official ship parts? There is a good sized ship building community out there and new parts could bring a lot of players back. That’s just one example. If you haven’t played for a while, what would bring you back?
starfield is the only game i really feel like playing atm. unpopular opinion i know but i love it. can’t wait for more updates
It’s pretty bad. It’s like a delicious looking pie, but then you find out there’s no filling.
Digipicking is better than the same recycled lockpicking system they’ve been using forever now the old system is way too easy to do at least with digipicking I have to stop and think about it for a second
Starfield is the greatest game of all time
I didn’t mind my first playthrough but their DLC was trash, the world isn’t believable or fleshed out and I didn’t want to play again.
I mean seriously all humanity is either generic deist or Reddit atheist or a lame cult? That’s the best world building Bethcan do now?
Yes. Yes it is…
I enjoyed Starfield early on. Then I got frustrated with it towards the end of the main story campaign.
But then Creations came out later, and using a bunch of mods has been a lot of fun. I really enjoy Starfield despite the known flaws.
I’ve never been concerned about the hate. I know that that’s important for Clicks and Ad Revenue.
Jess McDonnell @ WhatCulture loves Starfield
I played Starfield when i bought it. I don’t think I touched it since.
I think the fundamental flaw of a planet hopping adventure being loaded in cells drags this game kicking and screaming to a 4 or 5 out of 10.
And that’s independent of more subjective opinions of how the story is presented or bullet spongy enemies.
6.8 is too high a praise. It’s a 5/10 game at best.
I lovee the game. It goes so hard. Light gravity environments with the explosive shotguns have brought me so much joy. F the haters
I’ve been thinking about giving Starfield another chance for the past two days, this video came at a right time. Thank you.
It’s just woke, that makes it terrible.
Starfield is a game that tried to do more than it could actually pull off. It’s hard not to be disappointed by its flaws. But all these goons jumping on the “this is the worst game ever” train just annoy me to no end. It’s a good game. It could have been (much) better, but if you don’t think it’s worth the asking price, there is something wrong with you. Also, NMS has some good systems (finally), but it is still utterly lacking in purpose.
yes.
It’s just time for Bethesda to wrap it up. Their game design is absolutely so outdated, they are simply left in the dust. They are making fundamentally the same games that they’ve been making for the past twenty years. Clearly, they are comfortable with where they are at. The new Elder Scrolls will be nothing but a downgrade on Skyrim, with a new map, worse bugs, and even worse business practices, RIP Bethesda.
This is what I see happening, Bethesda is NOT going to No Mans Sky Starfield. Simply because they don’t have too. The team at No Mans Sky, they HAD too. That shit at launch was awful, and they didn’t have any other franchise to go back to, they had to make that game work. Bethesda simply does not have that sort of obligation. Infact you could argue, they have way more pressing obligations to get to. They have Elder Scrolls 6 AND Fallout 5 (if that hasn’t been taken from them already) I just don’t see them turning this around. If it was something smaller, they would have done it already but as I see it, this was a ” well, we gave it a try. back to what we know” sort of situation, which is a real shame because like you mentioned, its a game with plenty of potential.
if they didnt hold elderscrolls releases for 20 years to shit out this game instead I might have more sympathy. I havent bought starfield, and I wont until its 90% off.
I loved Starfield for the first 200 hours, discovered everything & had a great time.
Since then it’s been minimal. The replay value just isn’t there. Combination of loading screens, repetition of the same 8-10 locations on planets, no felt impact from in game decisions, and a lot of uninspired writing & voice acting.
There are a lot of quality mods that add some improvements to the game. And the free mods & content have been solid (Doom quest was cool). But there hasn’t been enough for me to DIVE back in for another FULL play through.
Hopefully the next big Expansion & updates can make some big improvements & add more content.
Bethesda hasn’t release a game better than alright since 2011. If I was Xbox i’d give the elderscrolls and fallout IP to other other studios and have bethesda act as a support for said studios
The answer is Yes, it was really bad!
Yes
Hype game before it comes out.
Trash game after it comes out.
Rinse and repeat.
You too can be a YouTube grifter.
I just struggle to find reasons to play it, at the very beginning j was pretty excited but after I did a few sets of exploration I kind of just fell into robot mode and once I realized that, I almost lost all “want” to do things in it. It had potential, but it missed the chances to make it see that potential several times.
Short answer? yeah it is.
So we get an announcement today (09/05,) with a teaser for the next DLC on the 2 year anniversary. compare that to NMS (which was mentioned in the video so no need to go over it,) Helldivers 2 launching its latest free DLC on the backhand of the Halo ODST crossover, AND Space Marine 2 dropping a healthy dose of free DLC for its one year anniversary. What ahve we gotten from BGS? a bloody buggy.
The lack of effort on behalf of the company for what is supposed to be their big franchise is utterly ridiculous. And it simply cant be supported.
If I pay money for a creation I don’t want it to disable achievements cause that’s what it does to ones not with the Bethesda logo
Played Starfield when it released on gamepass and beat and have not touched it since.
Paying to fix the game I already paid for? (14:39) Dude… That’s exactly what’s wrong with the Creation Club; let the modders fix it AND get paid for it. Sorry, that’s something I’ll never forgive Beteshda for, they know full well what they’re doing.
Started playing No Man’s Sky 4 the 1st time after the Voyagers update & I absolutely love how the flight travel is handled. Why couldn’t have Bethesda have implemented that mechanic. The Pulse Engine was a great idea & solves traversing from planet 2 planet. But unfortunately we get 2 traverse load screens in Starfield.
Short version : yes.
The rpg elements suck. They should have had a rival main faction to consolation to side with.they should have written the no options to quests instead of being lazy.
Starfield now is a retro game 🫠
I dont hate this game and want go back to it some time. I wait what the updates bring.
It’s comically woke. I needed morphine to listen to most of the characters in this game
The problem with Starfield will always be this: Besthesda chose to make a game that completely betrayed everything that made their games good. Vibrant, handcrafted worlds dense with things to discover? Gone, replaced with vast emptiness populated by procedurally generated garbage. An immersive exploration experience? Ruined by the constant loading screens. An escapist fantasy to escape to? They for some insane reason decided not to include aliens. Everything in Starfield begs the question: what in the hell was Bethesda thinking?
I wish I loved NMS everytime I try to play I drop it. Starfields biggest complaint that people shit on it for is what NMS is. Procedural boring planets. That being said NMS tech is impressive but sadly no game has melded space sim with good story with a good universe building where you want to explore. NMS is a babys version of space sim compared to star citizen and elite dangerous. For me NMS is ONE leap away from being THE space game. Star Citizen is the biggest scam yet people still throw money at it. Elite Dangerous is too stubborn to keep up with the other two although I love that game the most of the three. Starfield needs to exponetially improve the tech which is prob not cost effective for them that will prob not transfer over to elder scrolls so it wont happen. Starfield needs smooth transitions like the NMS and Star Citizen for landing and leaving the cockpit to outside of ur ship. All needs more procedual content with more city/towns but it seems all wont do this for whatever reason.
I typically avoid day 1 games these days, but the hype suckered me in on this one. I had a lot of faith and bought the premium edition or w/e to play earlier. Within 3 days i stopped and never went back with how massively disappointing it is. I knew it would eventually hit at least 70% on steam. It managed to go even lower.
I’m a Starfield enjoyer. I still play it for a little while sometimes. Fallout 3 is one of my favorite games. It got close. Missed the mark in a lot of ways but also did a lot of things that game isn’t even attempting, and many things better. If I didn’t have so many other games to play, I’d still be running through NG+. All I want is a Broken Steel on steroids type update that fleshes out POI’s, events, encounters etc.
Here is what i am going to do:
Not watch any videos anymore about bethesda UNTIL they produce a good game. They are not worth my energy and time.
No mans sky comparisons are bait. Bethesda should not chase games like that, they should be reminded that they make RPGs.
Just not a great story and a boring world. Imo the one change i would have made was to have the game take place right before the wars or during it. Thats what bethesda is good at
got it for free with my GFX card, sold the code instantly, and i still felt robbed.
that’s how absolutly despicable starfield was.
I loved it, and I still play it to experiment with different builds
We’re getting a new DLC as well so I’m excited for that
Is there any juice left in that Starfield tree?
Starfield’s mods should all be free, especially watchtower. That would actually get them players and significantly less hate. For all the really great mods (like watchtower) should just be included free with the game since it quite literally adds needed life and gameplay to their game. Then compensate the modder for including their work in your game. But what do I know, I hated starfield. To be fair though, mods like the watchtower make me wanna try again but not at an additional cost.
Starfield made me play no man’s sky non stop again and it is still getting better updates, no intention and need to give starfield another go as it stands
Every Bethesda game is really that bad. If people stopped giving those clowns attention, it would be doing the gaming world a huge favor.
Bethesda had tons of lore to work with when it came to Fallout and Elderscrolls. It made the maps the games took place in feel lived in, hostoric, and kept players engaged in the world building and exploration.
Now we cut to Starfield… 200 years of human habitation of these systems and almost nothing to show for it. 200 years of futur human colonization with FTL tech, and there are a handful of “cities” and sporadic repeated outposts?
Honestly, they should have taken all of Starfield and crammed it into 1 or 2 solar systems with actual space travel.
The lack of engaging activities, coupled with extremely long travel times between POI’s was a deathknell…
The artifacts were the only mystery in the game, only for that to be one big bland let down in the end… And to top it all off, the “fiction” of this science fiction future was basic af.
Yes. Its awful
Got 1500 hrs in this game, just now found a new hidden quest, I don’t think anyone found it, cause there isn’t any article on the net about it, it’s called dark cargo, I don’t know how the quest will be, but what’s amazing is I’m finding new things even after 1500 hrs…. And they say Starfield is devoid of content 😂😂😂…. Love this game, and it’s definitely worth it, if haters still yap about it 2 whole yrs later, it definitely is worth it, id easily give it a 9 on 10
By the end of Starfield, I did not enjoy much of the moment-to- moment experience, but two things to add is that (1) I don’t envy any team’s attempt to tackle a spacefaring game. It’s arguably the most difficult idea to make successful due to the scope. And (2) Starfield briefly captures a part of space that is often overlooked which is how somber it can be. The best example is the guy singing the New Atlantis shanty over his comms as he drifts through space. When I left a planet, I did think about how it’ll be awhile before I come back, and it helped me reminisce on the parts I liked. It CAN capture nostalgia when you’re not pingponging through loading screens, and the overall positive outlook in the quests and characters makes it easier to do that to its benefit as opposed to if it made space exploration grimdark and depressing.
I happen to love the digi pick system. It’s fun to me.
As much as I want to say otherwise… it’s still not great.
Yes
I’m so strange. I actually liked the digipick mini-game lol.
No man’s sky dunked
I like it a lot 🙂
Yes, now stop stalking about this peace of flop already.
Not interested in fanfic mods becoming official and ruining the original vision/lore. Idk why you always advocate for this Matty it doesn’t happen really anywhere else
There are over one hundred things I could complain about regarding starfield, but I still have 72+ hours in it and have been playing it for two months.
P.S. don’t buy the non-Bethesda made creation club quest dlc on Xbox series x, most of it is unoptimized and runs at 15fps. Waste of money. The creation club weapon and armour dlc is fine though.
Number one thing I’d complain about though, is how the devs can’t optimize the game so that the main cities run at a stable frame rate. Should be no excuse for that.
Man starfield fucking blows
No Man’s Sky is a consolidated package for customers with free updates. Starfield is a giant Wendy’s salad bar of potential “fixes” that charges you by marginal weight increments, just to add something to day-old store-bought lettuce.
i actually started a new run 3 days ago. funny how you make a video about it now.
so funny you play games like an e-3 trailer, walk slow, slow pan. catch myself doing the exact same.
I’d love to travel back in time and kick my own ass for ever talking shit about Starfield.
-I still don’t understand the complaint about Fast Travel, and….travel……the barren ‘AI designed’ planets (tried to tell yall).
In my first 11 hours I bitched on and on about the UI and the simple task of trying to back out, then I realized I could just use Keyboard+Mouse and it changed everything, then when I switch back to controller I was in the swing of it all and was ‘….ok’ with the controller.
I gotta say man, I think the Level Design for the missions in Starfield is SUBLIME. To me it really is on that Cyberpunk level. Are the characters bland? Yeah, of course, but go back and play Skyrim and you might notice, they aren’t that much worse, LOL.
My main complaint is the main quest and the relativity of the places and characters of the main story. It’s literally forgettable. But I can let that slide cause there are too many other strong attributes about this game that are fun.
oh yeah..some the pirates in this game are LAME-AS-HELL, but once again, it’s a massive game. If you are on PC and you don’t like the controls, once again, try out Mouse + Keyboard. It might just smooth some things out for you if you haven’t tried that already.
It’s a killer game, but once again, just like Fallout or Elder Scrolls, you need to let this thing simmer for about 12 hours to get that “Skyrim-feeling” that you may be looking for. I’d say for a Gamepass game, this is an absolute STEAL and I can’t imagine going on blast having some bitch-fit about Starfield. It most definitely has that “Bethesda-Vibe” or “Skyrim-Vibe” I was itching for so long.
One of the things I was hoping most for was a in depth world with lots of weapons and lots of build and bad building but it all sorta seemed like the bones of a great game without any meat, you don’t go to a restaurant and get the bones and stay happyv
I still remember taking time off work to play Starfield and then using that time to play Baldur’s Gate 3 instead lol.
Shattered Space has my favorite 1/2 punch side quests in a Bethesda game, potentially even an rpg, ever. Lost and Found followed by Fallen Footsteps is so emotionally charged I will never forget it until my dying days.
I wanted to love starfield because space games are very rare. But Bethesda ignored starfield and fallout 4. Fallout 4 is still not playable. Which has me worried about eso 6.
Starfield is great is great when you mod it into Star Wars Genesis.
I recently hit 500 hours in total in Starfield after having spent about a year away. All the things that drew me in before are still there, but so are the frustrations. There’s the bland multiverse plot that is incongruous with the rest of the game. Little annoyances like arbitrary quality caps on some spacesuits and big ones like most mechanics being minimum viable products. They all work well but there’s no synergy between any system and they lack satisfying end states. I love ship building in this game, for example, but I wish there was more to it on multiple levels.
That said, if Starfield were truly a bad game we wouldn’t still be talking about it today. And that’s the real frustration; this game is so tantalizingly close to being truly great.
I gave this game a look, but quickly decided it’s not worth buying.
Well it isnt great
Starfield so dated it already retro. XD jk i still think it has potential. hopes bgs realize that.
Honestly it’s gotten even worse for me. Second worst $70 purchase I have made. Only veilgaurd was worse
I think it’s the definition of a 6.5-7/10 game. No, its not that bad, but yea it really is that devoid of soul.
Huh crazy this video pops up as soon as I redownload it to give it the ole try again
Ask Hello Games fam
Bethesda Update predictions: Story DLC underwhelming Space Vampire stand in.
Additional Space stuff. Smaller ships. Space buggy’s.
Nothing else
500 new bugs.
So…. basically Scott is saying the problems started with the Switch. Yeah… I agree. It’s just gotten worse. What’s the point of this video again?
I don’t think it was ever characterized as BAD, just mid, very very mid, especially after all the hype as Xbox savior at the time
it’s worse than bad, it’s utterly mediocre. At least there’s some enjoyment to be had from playing and complaining about a bad game.
I think this game was intended for nexusmod or creation club modders to fill in, there’s no way the planets being an empty barren wasteland was for no reason. They got too comfortable with Skyrim’s game design.
2 years later and I can’t land my dammm ship without loading screens 2 YEARS LATER I CAN’T CRUISE PASS A BLACK HOLE DEVOURING A PLANET OR A STAR🤦🏾♂️
I’m glad I’m not the only E3 demo style player slow walking haha. Sometimes you just gotta enjoy the pretty instead of sprinting through everything
It’s a 5 out of 10. Story bland, gameplay bland, world building bland. It’s the absolute definition of bland.
Yes. Yes it is
games awesome having so fun with this sure its janky but its decent
It’s not bad but definitely needs more content. Way better than outer worlds imo
Yes, yes it really is that bad! The only decent part of it was Kryks legacy and even that was frustrating with a loading screen every 2 ft.
boring writing. Repeatative gameplay. Such a massive missed opportunity. Even Shattered space delivered a fart in a tea cup.
Shows how aged their engine is constant load screens etc
Starfield is struggling they need more players so good for them for making ps5 and switch ports.
It’s worse
Yes.
Yes😅
It needs aliens.
Watchtower was made by kinggath not Bethesda 😅
Yes
I’m so glad to hear I’m not the only one who does the “slow walk e3 moments” in games
Idk if this is just me but the music in Starfeld feels out of place. I can’t stand it and kills the vibe, the music isn’t bad but it sounds like it was for an elder scrolls game not a space exploration RPG.
Starfield definitely isn’t for everyone, but it really worked for me. I’ve had a great time with it, and I’m glad it exists. Just wanted to share the other side of the coin.
I played starfield when it first came out. Put about 20 hours in, thought 7 out of ten game then dropped it. Went back a year later and got so invested. I love it now, warts and all.
Starfield sucks ass. Its hilarious how whenever anyone tries to say something good about it, they have to follow it with like 10 caveats lmfao
“Vexing” is the only word I think describes my feelings on Starfield. It feels so much like everything is there for an amazing game, and I don’t know if I can point to a single thing and say “this is why I don’t like Starfield”. It just doesn’t seem to click with me. I’ve started several games, but it just doesn’t hold my interest for more than a week. I heard others’ explanation that it is a true Bethesda RPG in the vein of Morrowind or Daggerfall and I do see that, you can be whatever kind of character you want to be. But there’s just something I can’t quite articulate about it, it’s like having a word or a name on the tip of your tongue but you just can’t come up with it.
I’m never playing Starfield again. The quality was unacceptable. Creation engine in 2025 is unacceptable. Their attitude about the entire thing was unacceptable. The lazy game design of “radiant quests” is slop and unacceptable.
Todd Howard needs to go and take Emil with him. If (when) ES6 is on the creation engine, I will pass that one over too.
It’s evident to me that BGS has no ability to create in a modern world. Perhaps ever. They fell ass-backwards into other people’s creations and commandeered existing fanbases. When they make an attempt at doing something “original” it ends up being a garbage mod of the same game they made 20 years ago that is so poorly designed the modding community that kept them alive for two decades won’t touch it.
I boycotted Starfield because I was so mad they hadn’t even started Elder Scrolls 6 at time of this turds release, 8 years they wasted when they could have made fallout 5 and ES6 which the fans really wanted more
This guy just wont let the game go XD (probably getting paid)
Starfield is a perfectly good 8/10 game, but had way too much hype and too many loading screens.
I think even if Bethesda did the mass effect 2 space travel affect so you could fly between planets that’d be cool. An oh man at least let us fly between the main planet and the moons of that planet.
To top all the faults with this game, I am mostly disappointed in it’s lack of cinematics for important moments like character deaths and such. It feels extremely outdated on that regard. I enjoyed fallout much more in that regard even though it’s also lacking compared to bioware games that have very impressive and intense cinematics.
Im the target audience for SF. Love BGS games. But SF aint it. Put in 80 or 100hrs. Writing is dogshit. Characters are lame af. Soooooo many bad design decisions. Its a shame 😢
As a PS5 player, this will be a very easy skip for me.
I love NMS and Hello Games for their absolute G.O.A.T. behavior.
I actually think Starfield feels great to play, but it is massively missing out on content as well as storytelling
Unfortunately yes. I was hoping for when a fraction of the fun I had in Skyrim and fallout and I did not get any of that
I loved it on launch. I still love it now. Enjoying it now fully modded on series X😂
I was the first person to fly to a planet in this game before Alanah did
Starfield is bad simple as that, terrible world design terrible main story, mid side quests. The only thing the game was decent at was graphics and gameplay which still wouldn’t make this game a 7/10 it’s a 6/10 action adventure game disguised as a RPG when it’s not just like avowed.
Bethesda can’t make anything anymore, they grew the company to much and all the passion is gone.
I Expect elder scrolls 6 to be just as bad, I just can’t have any confidence in this company and I’m a long time Bethesda fan.
I love Skyrim, fallout 4, oblivion, the doom games.
Also I hope Bethesda doesn’t support Starfield anymore, it can’t be fixed put all the work into elder scrolls 6 and please God make sure it’s a good game.
They made barest “game” possible in order to sell content. Plain and simple. Missing factions, 7 dollar quests. Problem is everyone was pissed, at every step. Tryna live service a single player game.
The quality isn’t there cause their design philosophy isn’t in making a good game, it’s in making the most money.
Horrible game
The next DLC should be called “The Settled Systems” and actually just fill out the settled systems with more faction quests and things to do on the planets. Put in a story arc about conflicts from them expanding through the galaxy when they’re not supposed to be. Make us actually choose between a faction instead of playing all sides.
Starfield sucks. Such a disappointment to me
The game is divisive and I certainly do put a degree of blame on Bethesda for that. However, the hatred for this game is way overboard. That’s the internet for you. I think it’s good but not as good as it could have been. If they keep working on it and eventually release it on PS5 (and maybe Switch 2??) then perhaps it can get a new “soft” launch that will reinvigorate interest. The game needs improvements and fleshing out, but I’d still put it in the 8/10 area. Again, I realize it’s divisive. I just liked it a lot more than a lot of folks, apparently.
I’ve been a Bethesda fan since Arena, but Starfield is their first game that I can’t get past the absurd plot holes and sophomoric writing. The complete lack of exploration in a space exploration game also heavily contributed to me uninstalling it after a few months. I kept at it for hours and hours, waiting for Bethesda to come through. After revisiting the same POIs dozens and dozens of times, I realized this game was just brain candy. It’s junk food for the mind and doesn’t offer any deep engagement, but encourages the mindless repetition of the most boring action games. The 1,000 planets of Starfield are no different than having a single planet, even that is far too large for amount of POIs given in this game.
I do love base game Starfield over all. I do admit it has its flaws but I just want more overall like you said. Give us more space encounters, make outpost buildings better, more and better ship parts and mechanics, and more settlements with storylines. Since it’s such a huge game, if it just had more in it, then I think it would be better. I do understand some expanses in space are literal space but this is “cyber punk ish” future we’re speaking here. There’s gonna be a ton of human and alien life out there. Maybe this new teaser is referring to a Starborn vs human (Terran) war. That could be huge. Let’s go! I’m routing for them. I’m not all rose colored glasses. I see the flaws and room for improvement but at the end of the day, I do really enjoy this game. I have 888 hours into it and still playing.
No. It’s worse
2 years later and it’s still shit, meanwhile No Man’s Sky adds ship building and makes Starfield totally obsolete lol
Starfield is a weiner
Oh come on, barren planet simulator is a great game. I love exploring the same basic sterile outposts for hours. Who really wants the deep roleplaying mechanics and worldbuilding of Morrowind or New Vegas. Not I, give me bland space combat and forgettable story.
Short answer: No.
Long answer: Gamers are ridiculously entitled while possessing a collective average IQ lower than room temperature. Also no.
yes it is, it’s like playing skyrim in 2025 minus all the terrific artstyle, creature design and unique places
They are still paid mods. There is a significantly higher chance that a paid mod stops working than the shattered space dlc. Paid mods were insanely expensive for a long time and have come down to earth a bit, but they’re still a lot more expensive than official content. Context: i spent maybe $130 on paid mods.
“greatest figures in history, you meet genghis khan”
In only played 2hrs and couldnt stand it. Forced boring space battles, very bad pacing, boting story. I didnt care and deleted the game. I was bored and the combat was very generic. They say after 30 hrs the game gets better but I couldnt continue playing it was that bad.
The game’s lore, quests, characters, and storylines are just unremittingly dull.
That’s the crux of the problem for me.
It’s just boring. The entire time it just made me wish I was playing Fallout or Elder Scrolls.
I’m eager for the ps5 release. I expect there will suddenly be a reversal of public opinion.
Starfields still doo doo imo
This is bethesdas worst game to me. I never played a game of theirs where I can’t just get pass the first few hours. This game has the worst opening sequence of any of their games. You open up in a cave where people are mining rocks. And its you following someone in this dark cave talking. BEYOND BORING and after that you go from that robot companion to then the girl. I just wanted to be alone but I couldn’t. On top of that you go to what I assume is the main hub and something about the environment just came off as completely souless. This game was just white, bland and dry.
Spoiler yes it’s that bad boring
Loved Starfield, put 100 hours into it. Not many space games are better. I prefer it to No Mans Sky for example …
Funnily enough, the lock picking is my favorite part of the game. I think it’s fantastic and genuinely too easy at times.
Is Starfield REALLY that bad?
Short answer: Yes
Long answer: Also Yes.
I think it is quite obvious this game was built for modders. The empty planets were meant to be filled by fan created content, the bugs by an unofficial patch. If this game had the same amount of enthusiasm as Skyrim, it would have worked. Listen to the Lex Friedman and Todd interview and you will get what Todd was aiming for. Build a molding platform that will last two decades, charge for the best mods, extract endless currency for zero development costs.
YES.
I don’t think it sucked. I think it fucking sucks balls.
Yes
I don’t hate Starfield, I just wish it was more than what we got, it feels like a game created solely to make money, zero passion
Basically just disappointed cause this was a massive hype game for me before release
Matty I think your perspective on the hate for the creation club content is wrong at least for starfield. If the game was already great people wouldn’t mind paying 10 bucks for dlc but when the game is so lacking why is Bethesda making us need to pay for packs that fill out the world they should give us free updates when the game is so lacking the answer to the problem is here they are just pulling a fallout 76 and trying to monetize TF out of us. The no mans sky comparison is great because that’s what they did have free updates to a bad game that eventually made it good. If they wanted to just get instant goodwill and turn the ship around they could just offer some money to the modders add a bunch of mods together as a big free update and they would generate so much good will and improve the game
The whole “nothing to do” or “nothing there” is so insane to me. 100 hrs is like not even enough to be an intro. You get out of it what you put into it… and it feels like people with your takes want the game to take you places and show you what to do next… SF is not that. You seem to really want a linear experience instead of a truly open world. A “flow” is exactly what I mean by linear. Screw flow. I want to go where I choose for the reason my role play chooses. I’m just a dude or a chick, living in the universe. I basically disagree with 90% of your takes. It’s regurgitated nonsense. They need to lean into the hardcore and ignore the masses who have proved to be fly by night. They will complain no matter what.
I personally HATE the lack of Unique Armor (and weapons to a certain extent)
My issue? No Man’s Sky existed when Starfield came out. The fact that that game did a TON of stuff that, apparently, a mega studio like Bethesda couldn’t handle. Loading screens to transition between space and the planet? Jesus…. and there are many, many other problems but that was the reason I played it for 2 hours and was like “PEACE!”
I dont understand why people are overreacting to Starfield? In his thumbnail, he points out Metacritic for Starfield is 6.8. Yet, Fallout 4’s Metacritic is a 7.0, meaning Fallout 4 and Starfield are not even a single point difference. They are nearly identical in user review scores. Starfield is far from a bad game. If you don’t like it, you don’t like it time to move on.
14: 25 Also… Remove from all official language and require any media/creators talking about “creations” to NOT refer to them as “paid mods”. One, because they are not. They are outsourced DLCs, nothing more or less. Two, it muddles the waters in the modding community. Three, it pushes people like me to refuse using even the free ones.
Also also… Hire the creator of Mod Organizer 2 and make MO2s next version the official tool to manage mods in Bethesda games.
Just drop a new DLC using the 4 factions, maybe add Ecliptic in as well and call it a day, Starfield had the potential but too many bad design decisions were made and the modders are not really that interested they prefer making Skyrim content and make more money in the process as it is the game most people play and Fallout.
I love Starfield despite the hate it gets but, It’s because we actually don’t have a space game that’s like Starfield. NMS while it being technically impressive, it’s very cartoony, NPCs are boring, there’s no side quests or story lines you encounter and it’s very grindy. Star Citizen is…..that, lol. I want this game to succeed because I love what it is. It’s a Space Sci-fi grounded in reality and answer my question of “what if we did figure out space travel?” I’ve modes this game to be exactly what I want it to be and having a blast. The only thing missing is the seamless travel inside a system. Can’t wait!
Yes.
Yes it’s hot trash
It’s worse.
No, people expected way to much.
Im so glad I discovered your channel so I dont have to listen to that twat Luke “I laugh at my own jokes constantly” Stephens anymore… I just cant
I’ve been playing the ship building update in No Man’s Sky, and the exploration and space travel feels way better than Starfield. Hopefully Starfield gets more updates and possibly a rehaul. It was too ambitious for its own good.
Bro, Varuun Kai is ugggglyyy. Purple everwhere.
11:46 “this visually is awesome” – not gonna lie, I find the Color Grading/LUTs that are used on that planet to be incredibly ugly.
Starfield had a lot of potential. The lack of updates, fixes, and reworks over the last two years shows that Bethesda is not interested in capitalizing on the potential.
Most people hating on this game dont even play or own it. Somehow they have made hating on a game a part of their identity, not for a few weeks, but years now. I dont care what anyone says, Im still playing it and enjoying it. Hope they do add more expansions though.
I got a refund on Startfeild and turned around and got Baldurs Gate 3. So glad I did.
Not going to lie… I still haven’t beat this game and bought this game day one. It’s a game I want to love, but its just not as dense as their previous games. You hit the nail on the head where these stories are there, but you have to find them, which makes the journey to get there lackluster.
What I think it comes down to is this… They took away years of full development time on the next elder scrolls game for this. And tbh, it wasn’t worth it.
They’ve got 1 huge update to save the game, much like Cyberpunk. Make or break for them if they want it to last like they say.
Planets were empty with little to no life on them. Just farming resources, walking, rovering, and clearing the same copy/paste bases. Mass Effect has planets with civilization and full of life…
It’s over-hated. It’s only OKAY, not good much less great.
Yes, it is.
The best parts of Starfield was the ship gameplay, shooting, looting, boarding, conversing. As well as the space pirate storyline, if they expanded on that as the main story it would be of been fantastic. Honestly that was all i did when it came out.
Starfield wasn’t what was expected but I still had a great time playing it and go back to it every now and then. I also believe many people wanted this to fail and jumped on the bandwagon which seems to be very regular these days. I love Bethesda and I’m happy for those that enjoyed. For those that never I’m genuinely sorry they didn’t but I hope it can be improved over time and be looked at more positively.
I love/hate Starfield. I loved playing it, I hate that the Wolf Den disappeared and blocks me from finishing that side quest and the DLC was a let down. I did the reborn thing and went back to my earlier save, I just didnt want to lose all my stuff lol. Alot of bugs in this game that seem to never get fixed, but overall I am a fan of this game and bought it on Xbox as well as Steam.
I did one playthrough back when it came out and that seemed go be enough for me. I recently tried to give it another chance and it just is hard to get into with all the tedious tasks and loading screens
I find Starfield more enjoyable than that joke of a remaster Todd Howard released (Oblivion Remuster)
I like the digipicks its unique, skill issue? 😂
Built a new PC to play Starfield on max settings. What an unbelievable disappointment. At least I got to play lots of other games on max settings.
Starfield is the biggest disappointment I have ever played in my 30 years of gaming.
Bethesda is now a studio I plan to avoid in the future.
1:08 “Violence Blood and Gore Sexual Themes” lol. As if Starfield isn’t one of the most dull, inoffensive games ever created.
Loading scren space travel = lame.
It’s uninspired piece of garbage. Same as Elder Scrolls 6 will be.
Starfield is like when you have an A student who dosent apply themselves and farts out a C test.
It’s worse than bad, it’s phoned in
Yes
ITS ACTUALLY WORSE 😂
YES ITS WORSE THAN THAT BAD.
The lore and world building is just so bad compared to Elder Scrolls and Fallout
Switch 2 port might be kinda cool
No magic, no soul, no Soule, dull beyond dull. No rewards for any portion of the gameplay or story. Such a wasted opportunity, because the visuals are generally good, but it all feels fake and copy / pasted just for the sake of being big.
Starfield should have been a handful of star systems, a handful of hand crafted worlds, and more soul and charm put into the story and environments.
Make exploration great again.
my main issue was the music. Inon Zur is a mid composer imo his music did not fit at all
It’s just meh which is almost worse than bad
I think many people went in expecting a Fallout type experience in space and its just not that. I took it as just a generic sci fi game. Focused on main story, done all the faction quests and thats about it. I had a good time, its a 7/10 at best. I do think the dlc is terrible though, awful writing.
I have over 180hrs in Starfield and ive NEVER seen the clones you were talking about…I wanna know where Sabastian Banks is. if you run Unity multiple times WE SHOUKD EVENTUALLY come to a timeline where hes alive
Yes.
An extremely high percentage of games I’ve played in the last 5 to 10 years have been indie titles.
Also if AAA devs/publishers are so beholden to their shareholders to make a profit, why do they continue to make such poor decisions for the games they release? It’s either their extremely out of touch with their consumer base or that they’re just downright stupid.
the digipik is fun imo but it’s ruined by the shitty rewards.
Randy Orton said hes put in over 50hrs in Starfield and that was like a year ago 😂 Matt get him on Defining Duke!
It’s has such a great visual style and it feels great to be in that world, just sadly a lot the quests are mediocre. That hurts it more than the procedural generation.
Skyrim’s massive popularity has set up all future Bethesda games for failure because they could never, ever hope to live up to the hype, and Starfield got the worst of it. It’s a perfectly fine game that is overhated because people couldn’t control their expectations which let the hype train go off the rails, and when their unreasonably high expectations weren’t met they threw tantrums and nitpicked every aspect of it. It’s not the best game ever, nor is it the best Bethesda game ever, but it is a good time if you give it a chance, it’s actually quite the comfy game.
i worried for es6 and fallout 5 tbh lets just hope for the worst and then we wont be disappointed lol ;_;
I love the game and have over 2300 hours in it, just because a vocal minority of whiners & ‘culture warrior’ feral ghouls doesn’t like it is frankly irrelevant, even the most popular games of all time Tetris and Minecraft are not loved by everyone, not even 20% of the gaming population. We simply cannot measure a games success by who doesn’t like it, its weird and plain silly. Moreover, Starfield did extremely well, and doesn’t need a rescue like NMS that had an abysmal launch, Starfield only needs what they always said they’d do, ongoing support over a longer haul, ongoing enhancements and adding content, for many years to come. Last point, the modding scene is wild, Starfield is #12 on Nexus out of 4,000 games, precisely because its doing so well, that said, more official content, mechanics, and anything officials is more than welcomed too!
Loading screen simulator. Same landmarks and enemies. The same dumb swimming in sparkles for a power. It just works… Badly.😅
How many times is Matty gonna make this video lol
Yes
Wait it’s been HOW LONG?
The lore is very uninteresting and bland in Starfield
Need a new mass effect anything at this point.
Starfield is the perfect 😐 game
Mattys every 6th month video pretending to be a Starfield fan, whilst just 💩 on the game cause it’s not fallout/skyrim lol
I was skydiving off my ships in No Man’s Sky years ago
2 years is insane
I really really really wanted Starfield to be good. And now you can dive from a ship from orbit to a planet in No Man’s Sky. The Space Race is over.
yes
Personally, I enjoyed the game. It was very immersive as long as you didn’t try to free roam the planets.
Yes. Yes it is that bad
I love it in spite of it’s flaws. I’m older and my first space ship type game was “Space Shuttle: A Journey into Space” for the Atari 2600. A game like Starfield is something I could only dream of back then, so I’m happy this was made and will still get updated/improved.
I also played Elite Dangerous for hundreds of hours so I’m used to boring empty planets and POIs.
The game sucks
They really need to new writers. Skyrim was the last time I enjoyed any story telling from bethesda and also bring back real choice and consequences.
I don’t like that the player can join every faction and be the hero of the entire world so easily.
Ps5 pro lets go
its not as bad as people think but it’s not great…
I enjoyed starfield, but unlike Skyrim, I never went back. I keep meaning to, but… I don’t. I’d rather do a new build in Skyrim, Oblivion, Morrowind, or Fallout 4 than to step back into Starfield. I will attempt it again soon, but… it’s not calling me like all those other games.
Follow a lot of gaming related channels and I think Matty is one of the few that covers Starfield and its rocky life cycle (which make sense because Bethesda is in his wheelhouse). Didn’t like the game personally like a lot of folks but I welcome the coverage. Let’s hope Bethesda can get the mojo back for Elder Scrolls 6.
Its not a bad game, its just that having to go through all those menus and loading screen to litterly go anywhere is what ruined it
I think I will give it a shot on ps5.
I really wish they never took away the glitch to steal the vendors cash. Once I stopped being able to build ships on a whim I stopped playing.
Yes it’s terrible
Starfield is 100% better than cybertrash and I will die on that hill like king bloody cailan, at the Battle of bloody Ostagar!!!!!
Maker be damn if I let fanboys of the biggest failure of 2020 disrespect starfield!!!!!
Know your place trash!!!!!!!
No
“The Staaaarbooon” reall? C’mon, ZERO creativity through and through
Its a space exploration game it will never get bad!
my life is (almost) complete, when it is coming to PS5.
until now? I dont believe it. I must see it.
Starfield is special to me in a way I cant really describe <3 and for that reason I hope they do another big expansion and bringing it to other platforms.
I enjoyed myself playing this game
The missions were good. Exploring is boring/bland
Even the clones quest is just good, like a 7/10 quest, but its in starfield where all the content is like a 5/10 so it feels like a 9/10 quest
It was good for the first 10 or so hours. Then you start to see the flaws.
For starfield’s anniversary I’m playing no man’s sky all day
Yes.
Starfield is great if we do get another DLC I’ll be there I’ve replayed it countless times
yes
Yes.
While I think Starfield is rightfully considered an average game by the majority of the gaming community, Starfield has become a comfort game for me. My favorite part of the game is just being a bounty hunter hopping from planet to planet taking down spacer outposts and collecting bounties. I love being a stealthy sniper and trying to clear an outpost without being spotted. There’s a handful of creations that add POIs and randomizarion elements so there’s much more variety for this gameplay loop. Been a nice relaxing way to game before bed versus competitive shooters. Just put on a chill podcast or MrMatty video in the background and get in a nice gaming flow state.
I know people will say that Starfield is only as good as it’s modding community irrespective of Bethesda but Bethesda built the game with modding in mind, and very few game devs do that, so credit should be given there. Maybe Bethesda is being lazy leaning on the community to keep the game alive but without modding, most recent Bethesda games would have completely lost interest within a year or so if not for creations.
I’m probably overly cynical but Starfield makes me have very little excitement for ES6. Especially since the Veilguard/Andromeda writer is now their senior quest designer, which is genuinely absurd. It’s going to be the same dead-faced NPCs, infinite loading screens nonsense stuck in 2011. I dare them to prove that wrong.
Starfield was 2 years ago? Oh god, where does time goes lol
Starfield was my first Bethesda rpg experience so it will always hold a special place in my heart
Starfield released during a time where my Grandma’s health was rapidly declining (following a stroke). I’d come home from the hospital and just throw myself into Starfield to try and not think about everything. That universe means a lot to me, as a means of escape through that tough time and the grieving period that shortly followed it.
I’m not one to say whether it was an objectively good game or not in the eyes of hardcore gamers as I obviously have my own bias and feelings connected to it, but just wanted to share my love and appreciation for this game somewhere.
After 3 hours of playing it day 1, I knew this game was not for me.
Releasing a video just before they *possibly* release a big 2 years update – maybe that’s the whole point 😁 (the update teaser video just released on Twitter)
Bruh, you JUST missed a slight teaser for the next expansion. TERRAN ARMADA
I was EXTREAMLY let down, Shattered Space was the straw that broke them camel’s back for me
Starfield was never a terrible game. It was like a B- but a B- feels like a D when the people making it usually put out A+ games. Which is what the Bethesda Softworks main team did from 2002-2015.
i think starfield got all the hate cause we all know bethesda can do a lot better, it failed at the most important trait of bethesda games, that is the sense and reward of exploration, and failing to do it in a genre that is perfect for exploration is something most people can’t forgive
There is an actual derangement syndrome with this game. I know a guy at work who can’t even talk about it without getting visibly upset.
One of the most ridiculously over hated games of all time.
Yes
You know what I noticed, comparing it to fall out games. There was never a cult following, like with companions. You can see channels like fluffy ninja llama, would make clips of piper, and Maccready. Also dragon game/mass effect scenes, but I hardly saw anything for Starfield or characters.
I’m excited for the DLC next year
I loved starfield a lot, and I still do. <3
How has it already been 2 years?
Can’t wait for next years video
Crossover episode
I’ll get a lot of hate for this but I don’t care. Starfield is one of my favorite games. Not one of the best games, but one of my favorites. I enjoy it, it’s very much a comfort game for me
yes
Yes
