Starfield Is Going Through An Identity Crisis
After a year of patches and updates, new mods from the community, and a meaty expansion, there’s no denying that the Starfield experience is better than it was at launch. But is it the revamp that players are looking for? Despite all those updates, Starfield struggles to become the RPG of the future as the design choices of the past drag it down.

I dunno if I’d be very upset about that particular bug, immersion breaking or not X)
I really enjoy Starfield, I get really upset with driving the ATV and the lockpicking system is mind numbing when overused in an area, the characters lack discernable personalities and there’s too much dialogue as opposed to environmental storytelling. I still enjoy capturing ships, bounty hunting and leveling my ship’s capabilities. I hate things about Fallout and Elder Scrolls and have still put more time and energy into the franchises than any others. People still stream Skyrim and make mods to this day, I think the next Elder Scrolls game will do just fine. Starfield is most of a game and I hope it gets more love and updates.
Just started the game and I understand now why fast travel is so friggin confusing
I think gamers expect too much out of a games nowadays.
I’m excited for more starfield.
スターフィールドは多くの宇宙RPGのいいとこ取りを狙った。しかしノーマンズスカイを真似しない方が良かった。
I’ve got a save where I’ve done the recycle for a new universe 7 times. It doesn’t feel very rewarding after the second run. I’ve begun introducing mods into the gameplay but the biggest difference was a recycle mod that allows me to breakdown weapons and use those materials for construction or upgrading other gear.
I’m still very disappointed in the base game weapon design as all of them don’t feel very functional and aren’t really “fun” to use while going through the different battles in the game.
I found the Star Wars mods rewarding as that aesthetic felt better for the game world than the one crafted by Bethesda.
Ship making was a good idea, but you need the ability to preview the ship interiors prior to finalizing the construction of a ship as the layouts don’t always work well for how it positions paths, If you had the ability to preview the interior and move doors around to have them fit the layout you desire rather than their automated system for that which is more frequently disappointing.
I also missed those Oblivion / Skyrim days where the NPCs had their own daily routines like going to work in the morning and sleeping in their houses in the night. Games today have all the NPCs just standing there or walk randomly regardless of the time of the day or even the weather (like standing blankly in the heavy rain).
Wanted to try the game again and ignore the reviews, but after playing Veilguard and Andromeda (I regret not listening to the reviews), also videos recommending to install long-lists of mods, i’m gonna skip Starfield.
People are still playing Starfield? Wow.
I played it when it first came out, finished it, and literally haven’t thought about it since.
100% agree on the andreja and her home planet point, Bethesda are clueless , I was so looking forward to taking her back to her home world , yet taking her there you’d think she was never from there , it’s crazy , there should have been a lot more dialogue when taking andreja , no wonder people are giving up on this game when Bethesda can’t even see the woods for the trees .
They should’ve just made the whole game like the expansion. I would’ve much preferred a few custom, unique planets than the schlock we got.
I think NG+ is great, because their games always get too easy as you get in past a certain point. Each of my NGs I’ve found a new favorite legendary weapon and built a new unique ship each time.
One problem with this game it is design, for me I felt like I spend 100h on my playthrough but accomplish very little, I felt like 40h og those 100 were spent on running from ship to the objective. On many occasions I thought to myself that Bethesda used in this game every trick in the book that just makes you waste time, for exemple landing your ship 1 or 2km way from the objective, the lack of disassemble gear to gain materials, the over complicated lock pick system, etc, that’s why I think this game in not only without identity but also without soul.
Starfield had an identity?
A “meaty expansion”… you lost me.
As someone who actually enjoys starfield, I can tell you with confidence that this game has been going through an identity crisis since launch.
“i hit a wall with my ambitions” no longer got clicks
Bethesda will never get better at making ganes because people complain at launch and then do all the work for free by modding it to make it better. They have no reason to change.
If they had added aliens it would’ve been incredibly difficult for Emil to not rip something off and get Bethesda sued lol
So. Again. Nothing is good enough. Got it.
Didn’t they break up that tracker quest into two parts and sold the other half?
There is a lot of stuff in Starfield I like, but as is it wasn’t the game I wanted. I love the shipbuilding, that was the highpoint of the game for me. Where Starfield could improve is the base building needs a reason for existing, the space portion of the game needs expansion, and they need more cities and quests on the settled worlds. Honestly if you stick to the settled worlds the game should play like a traditional Bethesda RPG, but if you want to go to the unexplored systems the game should play more like a survival game where you have to hunt for resources and food just to survive.
space game with no Aliens
Take a drink everytime he says identity crisis…..🙄
Starfield derangement syndrome is a real thing. 😂
Dull. Bethesda is just dull.
It is vital that Bethesda does not listen to criticisms of their games. People who claimed that they were Fallout 4 gamers but were not persuaded Bethesda to create an online fallout game. They then did not buy Fallout 76 and criticised it even more than they had criticised Fallout 4. This wasted 4 years of development time. If Bethesda had not listened to their critics then we would now be playing TES 6 and Fallout 5.
I like the procedurally generated quests in Starfield because they ensure that I will have new quests to try until Fallout 5 appears in 2032. I am pretty sure that TES 6 will have 100% handcrafted quests but think that given the fact that the starfield universe is huge, procedurally generated planets were unavoidable.
It’s been fun seeing Bethesda learn the same lessons Hello games did in almost exactly the same context.
This is a weird marriage of a huge randomly generated game and the standard Bethesda curated RPG.
If it had gone further either way both could have been better
*Bethesda* Is Going Through An Identity Crisis
Fixed the title for you
Starfield never had an identity to begin with.
Dude the game is literally unplayable 😂 it’s crazy
Starfield and recent Assassin’s Creed games are proofs for the matra “less is more.”
Having more focus and fleshing out the spaces and stories within them is a way better direction to go in, as opposed to this wide net of emptiness approach.
Going on about mods making the game good is like saying a deli makes a good sandwich as long as you go to a dozen other delis to get the toppings 🤦
“It takes out the tedium of exploring”
And therein is the issue. In previous Bethesda releases, getting from place to place was enjoyable because you never knew what random event might pop up. With Starfield, the only thing popping up regularly is a loading screen.
We want something new because other ips need a break. The new ip is bad waaauhhh. Be glad they tried something new. Its the overhype yall built that ruined it for you. Starfield had a story it wanted to tell and it did
If a game requires mods to be good it’s a hard pass for me. At this point they aren’t even mods, they are semi-optionals features.
Starfeild sharted in my face.
Identity crisis implies they have a conflicting vision. But I think Bethesda and Starfield know EXACTLY what it wants to be: middle ground mediocre shallow open world rpg. They nailed it tbh.
If there’s a serious attempt at a deeper narrative then I’d say yeah there’s contradiction but the game doesnt.
It’s clear to anyone narrative is tacked on, it’s simply not the focus anymore. And judging by Fallout and Starfield’s sales I bet Bethesda thinks they made the right call, they know they can get away with it so why bother.
I wonder how Bethesda’s culture is as a company? Like do they hire people for their talents or do they hire people to meet legal and social metrics that quality of the game has suffered.
Skyrim grandma gave up😢
This video was spot on. Starfield feels kind of half baked. Another example; bounties. You can’t sneak on to a controlled planet with a bounty. You cab smuggle cargo but not yourself. How hard would it have been to devise a system to low power drift your ship into a planet, or have stealth tech you could install? The guard ships automatically detect you and confront you. This makes rping a pirate pointless if you ever want to visit the settled systems again….without hemorrhaging cash.
Mine is now crashing my pc every 2h of gameplay
Bethesda is dead to me.
Bethesda Studios no longer exists. There is a Bethesda subsidiary of Microsoft that works for the benefit of The Company. Consider that.
Starfield needs to embrace its massive universe instead of trying to appeal to people who want it to be Skyrim. There are so many mechanics in Starfield that need to be deepened to allow for its strengths to shine.
That’s really why Shattered Space lands so flat; it only adds content for a demographic of people who don’t want to play Starfield. I as a concurrent player statistic feel so ignored with this expansion. Yeah, the Varuun quests are awesome and it was a great vibe, but now I’m done with them and I want to make a Varuun Ship, Wage a Varuun war, create a varuun economy… but I can’t.
🤡 show
The 3 things I want added to Starfield the most are:
1) Space flight between planets 🪐;
2) Optional Slow-mo ‘k*ll cams’ & combat / stealth finisher animations;
3) Lots of new full companions / romance options – with evil/ neutral morality.
Word of advice for console users : Do not use unlocked framerate unless you plan on replacing the fan in 2-3 years!
Great commentary. It’s fair and balanced. I played Starfield at launch, but had no desire to go into NG+ because it’s literally the same thing, but slightly different. That’s what NG+ is, but the original storyline wasn’t compelling enough for me to replay. This is because of the outdated design choices Bethesda refuses to move on from such as static head shots when speaking with NPCs. Games like Horizon, and The Last of Us have advanced NPC interactions/cutscenes to the point they look like movies and far more natural, too. It’s the details like this that make BGS games outdated and feel like they’re living in the past… Because they are. Not being able to go from a planet’s surface to space in one shot like No Man’s Sky, is just another example of how outdated and overly ambitious SF, was. I don’t hate the game like certain people, but as stated, I have no desire to return to its world even if the Shattered Space expansion tries to play to BGS strengths.
Stop hiring activists rather than developers and writers. Seriously. Have an M rated game, and let us be whoever we want. And no, they haven’t addressed bugs. UC Vigilance missing? Oh well, can’t continue that quest. Inventory disappeared? Tough luck! But here’s a $40 expansion? Seriously?
This video is borderline pro Bethesda propoganda. Call the game what it is a testament to ego
“Meaty expansion”? Phantom Liberty and Blood and Wine are MEATY. Sharted Space is like $30 bologna sandwich with no condiments or cheese.
if not for the internet i wouldnt think that this game was made by bethesda…. skyrim huge success ruined bethesda and its all downhill after that …
Judging by the levels of cope in the comments, clickbait videos like this must be profitable.
As much as I loved cyberpunk and beaten it 6 times now I was hoping this game would give me a similar feeling but instead just made me realize what a special game cyberpunk is
Wer ist dafür das wir tod howard in die eier treten
Deleted it a few days after getting it. Have not bothered to look back at it. Scammed, shocking i cant claim my money back
Todd Howard needs to go, as do all of Bethesda’s lead designers and managers. Clown act all the way around. There are tiny little game studios making games 100 times more compelling than the massive machine at Bethesda. They have lost their way 100%. ES6 is doomed.
Starfield Sharted Space
“Great” and “crimson fleet questchain” is certainly an opinion
I respect your opinion but no bethesda makes RPGs unlike another studio and I dont ever want that DNA to change.
If you consider Shaytered Space a “Meaty Expansion” (0:48) what would you consider a regular expansion? Because, for me, this expansion was the polar opposite of “meaty.”
Imagine paying for a 30 dollar DLC and getting literally no new guns, companions, ship parts, or space suits 😒 just a mediocre main story and a few side quests which often just give credits. The DLC takes 10 hours to complete! how is it possible that it took over a year to make?! 🤨
A year has passed & the crashes have not been fixed, Its a great game when it plays, but then a game breaking crash occurs!
“Resting on your laurels.” That’s what Bethesda’s done since Skyrim, they’ve ridden on its success for the past decade and rereleased it five times. Now their laziness is catching up to them and the time for experimentation has long passed and they may no longer be able to innovate.
The fact that a lot of this video is “here are mods to make the game worth playing” is a damning statement on how badly Bethesda did with developing this universe.
I’m learning that this is an unpopular opinion but I actually had a lot of fun playing Starfield. I hadn’t played previous Bethesda games and had not a ton of expectations going in. I plan on doing the same with the expansion, if it’s anything like the base game I think I’ll at least enjoy it for a few hours.
Am I the only one who ground out all the star-born upgrades and didn’t get a single unique universe?
Starfield needs to halve the number of barely disguised loading screens needed to get anywhere before I’ll even think about booting it up again
Is it just me or is the narration for this video especially sibilant?
Gamespot still playing the “Say something negative about Starfield for clicks” FUD campaign huh?
Starfield is a great game that gets unnecessary hate just because it launched as an Xbox console exclusive. The Xbox Tax is clear.
This is the exact same problem that fallout 76 had. I really hope they learn
I love starfield but it hates me I have suffered so many crashes when I use mod and when I don’t use mods I stopped playing the game because it crashed and corrupted 7 saves I don’t like the unity and for some reason starfield needs me to go through it
It would be hilarious if ESVI takes after Starfield, and you just sail from empty procedural continent to empty procedural continent.
The Most Important thing is that Bethesda got Overly Arrogant. After Skyrim, they thought they were the best and forgot that others have gotten better and even overtaken them. Starfield is the end result of this Arrogance. Bethesda has now become from a Top Game Developer, till today where everyone finally realized that they have not innovated at all and still using their tired old style. Starfield has FAILED completely and is basically a relic of their past glory. If the Next Elder Scrolls is also going to be like this, this will be the END of Bethesda. 🙂
game now have melee build and weapons ?
They shouldve played to this games strengths, it’s variety of alien environments that are often devoid of meaningful exploration. The expansion should’ve focused on adding more points of interest across the planets, more akin to a big No Man’s Sky update than a usual Bethesda expansion
Bethesda made the wrong game with Starfield. The best thing is to move on to start working on Fallout 5. If we are lucky, we’ll get it by 2035.
You didn’t really explore in this game…. I mean no real space exploration and reality you point at the circle and bam walk there… Plus its a the future, you can scan the planets surface why wouldn’t you already have a surface map..
This game is the literal definition of being as vast as an ocean yet as deep as a puddle. Its so lifeless
It would need to have an identity to have an identity crisis. I have tried for over 100 hours to enjoy this game. The entire design philosophy about realism and scale was a terrible idea for a video game. There is nothing to do
You want space game play elite dangerous but only on pc they killed console version starfield is joke
Good game but very much ripping off no man’s sky.
this is a horrible half assed game and dead good riddance
Shattered space A meaty dlc 😂 naw that’s dying light /Witcher 3/ dragon age dlc.
NG+ is the best part of the game. Starborn 4 life!! Thanks Todd 🧡❤💛💚💙
Sounds like people forgot to upgrade their PC
The DLC is basically a dune ripoff but not a good one
Just port to PS5
you don’t get it… the monotony is the point.. Bethesda is making a larger point. It’s designed the way it is intentionally. It MIGHT be possible that Bethesda knew what they were doing when they made the game. Did you ever consider that? I’m in NG++++ and still loving it. I recently beat Shattered Space and loved it. It’s not perfect, but I’m hoping the future DLCs are even better.. there’s still SOO much Bethesda can do with this game. I don’t use cheats nor mods. I personally feel adding the vehicle was Bethesda giving in as many planets just aren’t meant for vehicle exploration. I’ve always been fine walking around/boost pack. I think it’s time all these review sites approach these games for what they are, instead of what they expect it to be. It’s funny, at launch these review sites were complaining that more planets weren’t “custom.” Now that there is one, there’s STILL something wrong. I said before it launched, that the DLC would be custom planets, and so far it is. What I would like to see is some of these Mods creating quests on these barren planets. In time, After launch, Todd Howard admitted he wanted Starfield to be a “lonely” space exploration experience. That was the base game. There’s only more to come. Bethesda will get Starfield even better. There’s no need to burn it at the stake when it’s going to be a game with a very long shelf life. Also, the persuasion system can be upgraded through the skills. He never mentioned that.He was right though that it’s built on past conventions. I really don’t want any more fetch quests. Those quests DO have variety in your responses, etc.. but it’s time to move on to better gameplay and a new graphics engine.
It never had an identity
Are you referring to the character creation options?
Identity crisis? Wat? It’s just a bad game.
Trust me I valued my ships more than those relationships.
No Man’s Sky makes this game look like an amateur hour horroshow.
I did not experience this at all when coming to andreja. She had voiced a concern that I didn’t share her religion, and after the ceremony she thanked me for converting.
Did you max out your affinity with Andreja? I didn’t get as much dialog as I’d have liked but she DEF said things when my character converted
Bro I was thinking about whether I download it or not and you guys uploaded just 5 hours ago. Literal time savers. Thank you guys.
After Fallout 76? Starfield? And now the DLC of Shattered Space?
All proof that Bethesda is embracing nothing but laziness.
And the lack of imagination is absolutely amazing.
Like their new motto is “Look at all the work we DIDN’T do!”
I dislike the conversation view.. why not make is a bit more cinematic with camera angles that might even include your character, so tired of the interface and just staring at the other party straight in the face.. also the game was too long, too slow, and very uninteresting.. after 30-40h i was done, but since mama didn’t raise no quitter i stuck with it for another 80h for 1 play though..
Bethesda has not evolved. If I want to play an amazing FPS RPG I’ll play cyberpunk.
I love modding games, especially Bethesda games. However, the fact that starfield basically requires mods in order to “tailor the game” to each player does not reflect well on the quality of the game.
This game was clearly meant to be an empty platform for paid mods.
Make others do the work while Bethesda makes the money.
dang, that last line. bethesda TAKE SOME NOTES PLEASE.
I know hardly anyone watched the video but I like that it had very thoughtful analysis on the game. Sharing what he likes about it while explaining the parts of the game that disappoint. It was really well written great video!
Starfield felt like a space mod for Skyrim or Fallout 4 rather than the “expansive and unique” space RPG we thought we were getting and that’s not a good thing. This game should have experimented more and tried new things rather than trying to add mechanics that only felt like a half step that were lazily added to the outdated Bethesda formula
The problem is Starfield has decent bones, but making the type of game it should be is not in BGS’s wheelhouse
Don’t take it the wrong way. But after Fallout 76 and Starfield, is anyone still interested in Bethesda’s next releases?
Watching the Starfield reviews made me install Skyrim again.
Anyways….. so when’s Fallout 5?
I think the biggest thing that hurts this game is just how spread out and diluted it is. Skyrim and Fallout never had this problem, each were hand crafted with lots of little environmental stories that kept you engaged with the game, even if the main quests were only midling. I can look at Skyrim’s map and tell exactly where I haven’t been by the gaps in the points of interest, while in Starfield I can’t tell where I haven’t been. I’ve seen so much re-used and recycled points of interest that I’m not sure that I’ll find anything new.
Do yall want the new Elder scrolls to be single player more closely to skyrim or attempt to destroy it w mutiplayer like the fallout series
The character models just look so lifeless.
mods on consoles are a problem for the console devs, creations are the entirerly wrong direction to solve it!
creations is plain wrong. they need to be removed
the DLC is to late and to expensive
the game has no replay value for me and feels empty beyond the storyline.
it has nice ideas, it has great concepts but has the same problem as early Cyberpunk. Done the one big side quest? done the story? done with the game.
its a cash grab with an engine that was outdated ten years ago
Bethesda needs to play to their strength—captivating, dense exploration. That’s nowhere to be seen in Starfield.
lol ya I liked that had no maps. Finished whole game and explored a lot. But that’s this Gen for ya. Kiddies need their training wheels 😂
Imagine if took driving direction apps away for our generation? lol like seriously just one second let it sink in that people used to drive everyday, just going off where the address was cos they actually knew their city. Really not that hard, but that’s the catcher isn’t. Our generation doesn’t like being challenged because they don’t know what to do.
What identity?
Nah mate, the only reason Starfield is bad is that it ISN’T a Bethesda game. Remember all the stuff that made Fallout 4 and Skyrim great? It isn’t here. Instead of well though-out factions and a world full of possibilities, you have meh factions and worlds not really full of anything. And to be fair, as far as we’ve seen, that is how space be–awesome if you’re a science person but otherwise pretty lame. But in a game…maybe juice some of those rocks up a bit.
I’m turning this off at “pay for quests” model. Heck to this game.
XP buffs for harder settings should be absolutely mandatory for every game!
Did this lobster-back like ANYTHING about the game?? Starfield is awesome. If you don’t like it. That’s fine. But maybe just go play something else?
Should have made an open “world” game with content. Not empty “worlds”
Why boast about having 1000s of diff worlds (basically reskinned versions of each thing before it) with nothing really impactful to do? Over … well think of new vegas/skyrim/fo3
A map brimming with stories , experiences, random encounters. Etc etc. so so disappointing.
If the name Bethesda wasn’t attached to this game it would’ve been laughed at for what it is and its money. This game would’ve been passable 10 years ago. Bethesda is competing with 343 for bloated overvalued mess living off hype, I hope people realise it’s no different soon.
The cancelled Prey 2 is way better and will be much better than what they can make elder scrolls included. They need to dump the creation engine and stop sitting on their laurels or better yet retrain the studio.
From an objective standpoint it will baffle me that tango and Arkane were cut out or left to rot but Bethesda wasn’t the first to go.
It’s hard for me to rate Starfield because of all of its highs and lows, but the truth is that it’s somehow my most played game by total hours in the last year, and I did play most of the best games that released in this time.
The multiverse game plus would have been dope if missions, factions, settlement s, and people, were varied,
It’s a bad game.
First it would need to have an identity.
I thought it’s identity was being generic, but only slightly unique enough to gain an audience. Like Dragon’s Dogma and Elder Scrolls
After Oblivion I knew Skyrim was gonna be a WIP until modders got rid of enough of the bugs to make it what it should have been at launch so I waited a year to play it. It was the best decision. I should have done it with Starfield. Starfield feels like a game from 2010. Bethesda just doesn’t seem to want to innovate in the ways they did with their earlier titles, from a technical standpoint or game play standpoint. The cities in Starfield aren’t even as good or as populated as even Witcher 3. That’s a shame.
I don’t want to play an ES VI that has cities like Skyrim’s. I want to walk through a city and be wowed like I was with Morrowind’s. That’s the game I built my first PC for. Starfield wasn’t worth a new PC.
1 year for 4 hours worth of fetch quests
Wow…I almost that this game even existed 😂
what CP2077 and No Man’s Sky did, Starfield could never.
to bad ES6 is going to be on the same engine.
I hope that Bethesda continues to Make DLCs for Starfield. There. I said it. I like Starfield. I cracked the 500 hour mark today.
Bethesda doesn’t know how to ‘close the door’ in this kind of design because this kind of design is all they appear to know how to do.
The gaming media is the one going through an identity crisis, trying to justify the sony cheques.
Starfield is never gonna be another Cyberpunk 2077 or No Man’s Sky! Bethesda devs are too busy congratulating themselves and ignoring all the player feedback. They probably don’t have the drive and talent anyway to fix this mess.
Good game for me 🇬🇷👍🎮
Hopefully this comes to ps5 in a year
Love the game if I could play it not at 15FPS
Honestly I think you’re dead wrong that Bethesda needs to leave behind its legacy. The thing that keeps me coming back to elder scrolls or fallout is exploring a bespoke and lifelike world with interesting characters, emotional moments, and lore scattered around. While they can improve on their railroading and player choice outcomes, I love that core experience that let’s me know the devs really cared about making a living world. Starfield cut a lot of that, instead focusing on world size and stuff that sounds good when read out on a teleprompter. Rather than leave their legacy behind for a bland generic Sci fi rpg, they should focus on giving players a richer and deeper world, with quests, places, and characters that leave a lasting impact on the player, and prioritize making exploring feel like the heart and soul of the game.
Snorefield
Starfield is really the best game this gen
Aint nobody care about this flop of a game
I would love a dlc like this every year
Starfield is just bad game, but because it was made by Bethesda it has complete immunity to criticism – after all only “haters” can say bad things about AAA games…
Any other studio releasing products of similar quality would be ridiculed and shut down long ago.
There are some things that I never understood in gaming industry and this one is the biggest mystery
If CDPR could completely revamp Cyberpunk AND deliver an epic DLC then there’s no reason Bethesda can’t do the same.
Is anyone even excited for Elder Scrolls 6 anymore? These guys clearly just cant make a good game anymore
It’s such a shame because this kind of game had so much potential.
Edit: The core concept was good but most of everything in the game just felt half-assed. It had potential at its core.
Starfailed
Nah its not starfeld was always going to be a Bethesda game like fallout like Skyrim think it’s really good i like starfeld is it as good as cyberpunk no i wouldn’t put the in the same league but for what it is Fair enough
Game of the Generation, unfortunately, it’s the wrong gen.
