I remember when Bethesda listened to feedback and responded with “If you’re not having fun it’s your fault.”

Damn that gameplay in the background is boring. I’m glad I never played or watched this game played before.

Does anyone realize the major voice actors for our characters, and every key NPC has been on strike for nearly two years?!? Imagine they have been coding plenty, writing etc. The rush will be on to get deals secured and folks recording needed lines to fit narrative. The biggest glaring issue was new content missing from Unity and pretty trivial lines from Constellation.

I’m still hoping for Starfield to become something I love. I want it so badly. And the “Creation Club” monetizing mods that are critical to the game’s success just kills me.

i like the game, but i totally agree about the modding part. Them getting money for not fixing something, while someone else doing the job.

I wouldnt care about it that much, if the game wasnt full of bugs to begin with.

If it was very stable almost no bugs in the beginning, and then they would take this mod road, i would think its ok. Because then i dont have the feeling they need to add updates to the game (except for DLCs).
Now im a bit scared for ES6, Bethesda on purpose not fixing bugs, releasing half a game, just cause they know they will earn money for it, when someone else fixes it.

Everyone is missing the mark here. Using the word “free” in regards to bug fixes. It wouldn’t be a free update, you all paid 80+ dollars for this. And the sentiment of the creations as a way to support modders is also BS. Download the mod for free, and donate to the modders patreon. Stop incentivizing this companies predatory, and terrible game design philosophy.

I liked starfield overall. Played it when it came out. I liked gunfights, the side quests were great. I’d recommend the game just for the side quests alone. not the worst looking game either as far as Bethesda are concerned. main quest was mid. I put it at 7/10. I get it on sale though.

I recall in another video you mention that Mind’s Eye was built for a Fort Nite for adults game platform that they hope would become a platform. I think you are quite on the money here that BGS is trying to create platforms like Fort Nite so that they can just watch players pay for “mods” and “content” while just running maintenance… if any.

While your take on pricing cut (how much modders get vs how much bethesda/ms get especially in a situation when the purchase goes through ms store) is valid, I think that the idea that developer is going to break a game intentionally so that modders would fix it and they (devs) would get a cut is just plainly wrong.

I worked with a number of teams and noone in their right mind would do anything like that.

I haven’t played starfield, but from what I understand (from your videos over the year(s)), the game has a number of oversights in balance, gameplay or unfinished systems, and all games are like that. it’s not possible to make something ideal, so obviously there will be systems that were planned as 100%, but what you got in the release for “reasons” (timing in the sprint, plans changed, but some work was already done, smth else) is 70% and then this 30% oversight is fixed by mods – noone ever would like this as a developer/author of anything.

Plus I don’t think it’s correct to mix what modders do and what devs do. While some comparisons when modders team does AN ENTIRE CAMPAIGN is I think might be 95% equal to what game designer or narrative designer do, when modder makes changes to already existing system like with weapons balance, he “applies modifications”. He doesn’t create the system, he doesn’t code it from the start, he doesn’t plan it, he makes changes to already existing system (and on the other side he most probably has no documentation of what devs did, no internal tooling, no ways to test stuff as quick as it’s done internally, so big props to anyone even trying things like that). it’s a big difference and you talk about it 99% of the time as if modders are devs.

Yeah communication has been always a thing with Bethesda, I still play the game and I’m happy with the fixes because stuttering was a horror. Yeah they screw you over that’s clear. But they can’t do it with big patches because of the laws on it.

It seems like Luke is suggesting that publishers would deliberately publish a game they know is bad just to sell mods that fix it, which ignores the issue that if a game is bad then few will buy it, much less buy mods that fix it. How does this big brain scheme benefit the publisher? The publisher is far better off ensuring their developer makes a good game from the start, with mods providing optional customisation that further enhances an already rich experience.

I remember when Starfield and Baldurs Gate released around the same time and the patch notes for BG3 were huge and much more frequent and thern Starfield would show up with 3 fixes in a patch that took them months. “We have exciting plans…” is where I paused. That about sums it up, because that’s been the fault in the industry for a long time. Planning to do something isn’t promising to do it. You can plan out things all you want but that doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed to do it, and planning coincides with ambition. Overambition is why Bethesda turned into the powerhouse they are in the first place; promising more than they can deliver but impressing shareholders and gamers nonetheless. They were part of the got-there-first crowd and won by default.

Ozzy was one of the first to the black metal, darkness themed musical era. As a result, he managed to remain the ‘Prince of Darkness’ for his entire runtime with fans vehemently praising his greatness despite him becoming a label and brand long, long before his eventual passing. Much of his work was just rehashing and repeating his old and best hits, chasing after that greatness and praise he once upon a time caressed in his hands. It’s not hard to compare Bethesda to him because they’re more or less the same studio name but incapable of producing anything good other than a quick rehash of their past, best hits (Oblivion Remaster, Skyrim Remaster, soon to be Fallout 3 Remaster, etc.)

I’m not hating on Ozzy but maybe it’s okay to just let Bethesda go early. Let others take their place in your heart because some folk are only famous because they got there first and had a team of skilled, talented people carry them to fame and success.

The game has a loot system almost identical to Fallout 4. The one exception is that they limit tiers of equipment per every 10 levels of your character.

The platform is going to take their cut no matter what. It’s disingenuous to say they could or even should give the modder 90%. I don’t even really like Bethesda games. I’ve never finished fallout 3 or Skyrim. So, I’m not inclined to defend them. But a 30% cut is perfectly reasonable. I assume they have to do more than press an upload button on their end, right? Like they need to make sure there’s no malicious code. They need to pay developers, QA, legal, monitization people. I think it would be better if they did 30% and gave the modder the bigger cut, but it’s only 10%. Maybe Bethesda, the platform , and the modder could all take 30% and the remaking 10% could go into a pool. And at the end of the year, the top 10 mods would recieve bonuses out of that pool. Or something.
Meanwhile, I don’t think Bethesda is making mid games in the hopes that modders will fix them. Clearly, if the product isn’t compelling enough the orders will not come. Like reverse Field of Dreams. They have all the incentive in the world to build the ultimate sandbox. They just don’t know how. The industry has passed them by.

I’m an old gamer, modder (mainly Bethesda games), SF fan, and consumer. They failed so hard on every level with Starfield that I’ve canceled the game pass without even trying it out “for free” in the remaining days.

Ok Bethesda. You want to “support modders”, you’re so ultraistic….. release your next “game” for free. Clearly you have no desire to make an actual game anymore. Make a basic framework for your next creation kit and let the community build your game for you like you do anyway and I’ll pay THEM.

I mainly play bgs games on console. So I always thought the mods (for certain bgs game and mods available on console) were always free. Since BGS didn’t do anything on their end.

It really is wild how people will bend over backwards to praise Bethesda for this stuff while claiming they’re “supporting the modders” … y’know, many of those same modders who have had direct PayPal, KoFi, Patreon, etc. set up for years all for people to show them love and support if they truly wanted to given how many mods they had made and put up for free over the years. Some being okay with Nexus donation points, even. Yet going through Bethesda where they get but a fraction of the cut is somehow the route that seems more supportive in their eyes and justifies this ridiculously lazy route Bethesda is taking to capitalize on the modding scene to fix their own faults …

This type of stuff is partly why so many good modders pulled away from the scene several years back when Creation Club came out and Bethesda started playing favorites among creators by bringing them on and heavily promoting their work while ignoring others because their amazing mods weren’t “lore friendly”. Nexus also played a part in it with modpacks, which is a separate issue, but it did add more fuel to the flames with how things had shifted and turned so many away from the scene.

Before CC, the community was united on the issue of paying for mods (vast majority were heavily against it). A number of them were modders who made their own meshes and textures, rigging everything to work in Fallout and Skyrim that spent time creating ESPs and ESLs to ensure they can be crafted without using the console to spawn their newly created items in-game, making new quests even … and they wanted to give it away for free because that was what modding was about: no paywalls, forever free. But once Bethesda dangled the idea of modders getting paid and working with them, suddenly it’s totally cool to pay for it now. It’s fine that Bethesda has been trying to push this in for over a decade to use modders to do what they should have done to begin with considering all the feedback over the years, and what better way to get people to blindly hop on board and fork over their money by making it seem like the majority of the money goes to the modders themselves than this right here ….

Yea this obviously chaps my rear and gets me heated lol. It’s just disheartening coming from someone who has been around the modding scene for Bethesda games when I knew it as TESNexus. Everything is monetized to hell and back now with a whole new generation complacent and even happy to pay a company that half-asses everything now more than ever for mods that fixes their shite. I just really love the modding community but hate seeing what it’s come to with all of it being so normalized now. Not a direction I ever thought it would go a decade back.

If I was a naive optimist, maybe Bethesda is trying to replicate Hello Games and are cooking up a NMS level of update and they’ll only announce it when its ready to generate the most hype. Too bad I’m not a naive optimist.

I just dont understand people who expect or even want significant updates. Either the game came out and was great and so the modders will make tons of cool fun content or the game sucks and both you and bethesda should move on.

Its legit frustrating that no man sky and cyberpunk invented the precedent that you can just release an awful game and update it years later to be a good product. Because now everyone knows that full price games can be garbage because consumers will just assume its going to be worked for years

It’s mostly to support larger creation packages so don’t expect new content.

If you told me in 2015, excited as hell to try out my new copy of Fallout 4 as a lifelong NV/Skyrim fan, that I wouldn’t bother to play the Bethesda game after that for more than seven hours, I think he’d cry. It is one of the worst RPGs to ever exist. It is fundamentally broken, soulless and empty at its very core. It is a monument to SEVERE mismanagement and Todd should honestly have been fired for it.

Nearly two years later after launch and I’m still getting regular reminders that cancelling my preorder for Starfield was the right choice.

There was nothing added to BGS games for a decade that modders didn’t implement first.

They told you outright.. the lesson they learned from shattered space was that the gave away too much content with free title updates beforehand so it felt lackluster

They are most likely sitting on new content until whenever dlc 2 comes out

If you want to support modders, check if they have a personal patreon, subscribestar, boosty or donation page to help them commit more time for modding. Paying for mods through the “Creations” scheme is just handing Bethesda and Microsoft money for doing nothing, basically rewarding them for laziness.

It’s not a bad game. It’s just such a huge disappointment.

Well you know how it is with tradition. You have to keep it up even when you don’t really care that much about it. As such Bethesda had to update Starfield to break any mods that maybe out there.

It’s quite telling that the one regret Todd Howard admitted to with Starfield was the time they gave us something for free.

If the update broke promising mod projects, it did its intended job.

Creations are a solid earner for Starfield so it makes sense that they would be on that above all. There’s a lot of DLC quality stuff in there so they haven’t needed to do any drops this year. Darkstar is free and adds a ton of stuff and a good loot progression.

Outside of the modding issues, I think I would quite literally have hundreds of hours in starfield if the game had half as many loading screens, which can’t be modded out.

For as bad as Star wars outlaws started, they at least tried to come back and fix a good amount of issues… Star Field though…

All those years using money glitches in their janky games when they were figuring out an actual infinite money glitch.

One of the things that seriously concerned me was when all the problems with Fallout 76 was going on and Todd Howard made his ‘It’s not how a game releases, but how it turns out years down the line’ .. that horrified me as that seemed like a horrible attitude for a developer to take.. particularly one as big as Bethesda.

Knowing the actual fixes people want are ONLY happening through modders and BGS refuses to fix them themselves because they take a cut of said mods is so Infuriating. I genuinely hope at this point ES6 flops and they lose money. Fuck that shit man.

They can’t afford to do updates like this…. This being Tom’s magnum opus or whatever, it CANT be left alone for this long without content or changes to the game….

From everything I’ve heard, they’d have to pay me to play Starfield. Probably at least $200 to beat the game plus give me the game for free. If they want me to play the DLC, that better be free, too. And they’d have to pay me at least another $50 to go back to it later if they want me to play the 2nd DLC later.

But I haven’t been much of a Bethesda fan, ever. Which is kinda weird, since I bought Fallout 3 and all the DLC because of that one E3 VATS trailer… then I bought New Vegas Limited/Collector’s Edition or whatever with the deck of cards and stuff (then gave those away because I didn’t ACTUALLY care about those), and all the DLC… Then Skyrim and all the DLC, and Oblivion GOTY (that was like $20 at GameStop by then. I think I actually got it a few months before Skyrim), and Fallout 4. None of the DLC, though. It took me THAT long (and that much money) to figure out I didn’t really like their games much lol.

So yeah, $250 and I’ll beat your crapfest, Bethesda.

the modded game on PC is actually pretty good. Its mundane stuff but has a whats the point kinda charm to it , which sorta feels like its starting to work. A hardcore economy revamp would be great. I still dont understand why people play Bethesda games without mods to begin with but understand the criticism. They got way too lax with Starfield and punished for it.

Some things can’t be modded. Like the missing description/flavor texts on items and ship parts. They are invaluable for world building.

I don’t think any patches or expansions, DLCs, are going to ever fix the core problems of the game.

It’s a minor update that tweaks a few things…what’s the big deal? The Creations Menu has needed some tweaking and people have been asking for that for quite awhile. It’s not a major update- I don’t know why you’re even talking about this except that’s it something to piss and moan about besides the other, actually important issues going on gaming right now.
