The Bizarre Food Economy of Starfield
Starfield’s universe is vast, but who’s feeding it?
In this deep-dive video essay, we explore the bizarre and brilliant food systems across the Settled Systems: from the mysterious cube empire of Chunks to lesser-known brands like Red Harvest, TerraBrew, Filburn Agricultural, and the questionably edible CAN-uck! canned goods.
We’ll break down how food works in Starfield, who controls it, and what it says about life in the 24th century. Is Chunks just a fast food company… or something closer to a corporate monopoly? What are we really eating in space? And how does Starfield’s food compare to past Bethesda games like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls?

More Starfield lore content LETS GOOOO
Lore of this game is sadly often overlooked cause game itself wasnt that succesful, and its a real shame, cause there was a lot of thought put into it
The first thing that came to mind when I saw Chunks was how easy a cube would be to package for shipment. Starfield leans towards hard sci-fi, concerning its visual design with the realism of space travel more than most other space games. In real life, a spaceship cannot have stuff sloshing around the cargo hold, or it might crash. A container of liquid can’t have any empty space in it. Everything has to be secured down to keep the center of mass as stable as possible. Chunks would be extremely easy to pack tightly into rectangular containers to limit movement without damaging the product. It’s a simple shape to vacuum-seal. It’s purpose-built for space travel. I thought that was pretty smart of them.
HOWEVER this theory is blown apart when you see a Chunk in its blister pack form. I don’t know what I expected.
that goodness i uninstalled last night
… “food as a microcosm” … definitely.
Every once in awhile YouTube recommends me a video to remind me of how much I hate starfield
We managed to go to space… but canada come with us
I wish Starfield was a better game.
I learned that a Chunk egg cannot be used for gastronomic research when it calls for an egg….
The food of starfield is by far the most interesting lore to me hands down. Because i love to wonder how culture and food intermix, especially in the far future
I’d prolly be a regular at chunks,it doesnt look the worst, but I’d especially be as adventurous as possible
I like to rp in these games. My characters never trust chunks. Cloned meat is more tolerable.
Food only becomes a “mere human right” if you produce it yourself. You can’t just take food of someone else and claim it’s your right.
Too bad that this corporate and intricate lore is not supported by the world. Like there should be propably entire MOON dedicated to Chunks production.
Its Human Flesh
i just want to know if they sell plain chunks (unflavoured]
Let be real it just Bethesda laziest it way easier to make the food have the same shape.
I won’t spoil it, and unfortunately I can’t remember where it was, but there is a POI that you can explore that answers the question regarding where Chunks come from, or more specifically WHAT they are made from.
There’s a reason it’s a closely guarded secret- sales would definitely be affected if it were made public knowledge.
Anyway, great video, and I agree with what others have said already- it reminds me of back in the day when videos were mostly about appreciation instead of complaining or attacking.
Looking forward to more like this in the future!
Wow, this was really good. I’ve seen a couple other videos about specific starfield world building pieces, and it’s pretty clear that they had some seriously passionate people working on the bones of the worst parts of Skyrim.
I haven’t played starfield nor do i have any desire to, but i was HOOKED on this video! great editing and pacing, made me want to learn more about chunks, and sweet rolls. great work!
Kenshi’s food cube is still OG.
Walk without rhythm , if you’re going to eat spiced worms
Spiced worms will give you blue within blue eyes and prescience
Mmmn, alien sandwich looks tasty.
Such a throwback to old lore videos
Glad yt algo called you to me
All that and only 1k subscribers too god damn
But what about Oishi or Tranquilitea?
Same place every game Bethesda made by themselves for the last 14 years. The garbage can
In the far off future… Coffee. Coffee is ones official start of the day.
boost
I’d buy that for a credit
This video feels exactly like one of those Disney Park food comparison video essays and I’m so here for that lol
No one cares about Starfield
For the record, the worms look like mealworms, and if mealworms were grown in space or on other planets, they might qualify as being alien for marketing, without necessarily being native to alien worlds, …or being an alien species.
there’s like 300 YouTubers that might as well be the same person at this point
a better argument to play this game I’ve never seen
I’m sure it came from the same trash pile the game was retrieved from.
Good video, terrible game.
Bro doing anyaustin’s work
I got a McDonalds ad watching this, and I thought that was ironic
Chunks is the effect of a people living and Travelling the vast empty.
There needs to be a official Chunks centered DLC.
White Castle is our modern day chunks.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Chunks has a deal with Ship Services to acquire the protein left after you steal a ship.
Why are resources is Starfield scarce? They have access to the entire galaxy to mine and farm. Is Starfield a post apocalypse like Elder Scrolls and Fallout? Bethesda world building is so dumb
Are you the real life Mickey Caviar after this episode?
I like the video and the concept itself but you really scream some ‘how much did Bethesda pay you to do this video’ energy.
Really nice video especially from such a small YouTuber. It’s easy to forget that even the biggest YouTubers started off small! Definitely earning a sub!
MOOREEEE
I hate the packaging for chunks. You could ship so many more chunks for cheaper if the wide flat part of the package wasn’t present you could pack them in as cubes. Then everyone could have so many more Chunks at all times!
will there be more ?
Forget why or what build the temples, forget why Starborn exist, forget if Great Serpent exists.
The real mystery of Starfield is what the heck Chunks are made of? What is the special sauce?
I remember their being a marshmallow company that was hired to make like chunks for a starfeild event and they made grilled chicken ones
I never looked at what the food implies about the lore and setting of RPGs. Honestly great topic and really well done! You got a sub from me
Seeing this video pop up in my timeline made me questions its creators life choices
“as long as its tasty, why question it.” Chunks is just the entire standard American diet in geometric form.
This was fantastic. Subbed thx.
While this is not my favorite Bethesda game, I enjoyed this video.
Hope you do more
crazy how this is the most interesting starfield thing ive seen since it released
I’m surprised the old family recipe of Grandpa’s Meatloaf wasn’t mentioned. It’s an exclusive meal you can only make yourself if you have the Kid’s Stuff trait because it’s literally your character’s grandpa’s meatloaf.
Soylent is made from Humans!
I’M ESCAPING TO THE ONE PLACE THAT HASN’T BEEN CORRUPTED BY AMERICANISM… SSSPACE 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Such a great video about a game I truly love
This video shows how close starfield came to having some really interesting social commentary. The universe they present is complex and resembles our own in many ways, yet starfield very rarely questions itself or cements it’s own ideology. Instead of focusing on the mystery’s of the universe, the game should’ve really focused on how the universe functions and what kind of society we built once leaving earth.
Why are you so obsessed with human corpses? Have you not seen all those endless amount of aliens on the planets, those herbivores, that can be harvested much easier that any human corpse could? I mean sure we as the player go through the universe killing thousands on our wake, but regular people don’t do that and except for people in extreme situations, most humans prefer not to eat human flesh, as far as I am aware. 😀
Kinda feel you should leave a credit or some sort of acknowledgement for @any_austin and his channel, as this is almost a 100% replication of the style of videos he makes, thumbnail, editing, and all.
The new thumbnail is much better lol
Terrabrew should have a special coffee made around Halloween, called “The Terrabrew Terror Brew”
I love these little things, these little details in Bethesda games, doesn’t matter if the game is good or bad, they always fill out their games with little details like this that makes it feel just a tiny bit more immersive 😊
love the starfield lore deep dive. great video!
Congratulations you’ve put more thought on star field than the developers
Thank you for making this video
Digging this.
In our tabletop sci fi rpg we speculated that the lowest quality foodstuffs were simply organic molecules made from the atmosphere of gas giants. Or at least that’s how they make Astro Blast beer
I’m still learning new things about Starfield even after 12 New Game pluses and getting all achievements. Bravo sir 👏
They come from the orphanages of course
Video engagement comment
Awesome video! Glad to see others enjoying the game and lore as much as I do!
And this is why my character survives on toast and earl grey tea.
Great content!!!!
I really love that people are doing proper deep dives into Starfield. I get why everyone has a massive hate boner over it, but it can get pretty tiring after the first 800 video essays whining about it.
Great video!! I’ll definitely be checking out your others. I think you broke down all of the different types of foods really well, along with the stories they tell about the world they’re in. It definitely makes me want to look closer at the small details in similar games. When playing I feel like I tend to not focus on them because of the sheer amount, but focusing on one single aspect like this definitely makes it more doable.
I don’t even play this game and this was fascinating.
This is such a cozy deep dive. Concise, entertainig, and very good editing. Love it!
I do appreciate these kinds of stories and I have nothing but respect for the writers that put so much effort into their worlds. But it says alot about Starfield and Bethesda as a whole that the most identifiable word for all of these narrative elements is “quiet”. Like, I feel like space is the perfect setting to branch out and make food and food culture a bigger part of the story, seeing how it effects different communities and how it’s leveraged to push corporate or political agendas. Not just a quiet background element but an active force in the struggles of life in space. Maybe it would be a bigger player in Bethesda’s games if they committed to making a survival rpg.
The real question is why are there people living on earths moon and no one on earth when it’s more inhabitable in game.
You remind me of anyaustin, and I love anyaustin
I subscribe
Where did the food come from? Didn’t you hear? They came from the deepest, darkest corners of…Todd’s mind. He OBSESSED over them(HIS words, not mine). They were in his dreams, they were in his…nightmares. Of course there was no time for obsessing on the…story, gameplay, innovating, making a …MAP. Foodpacks they HAD TO get THEM…perfect.
This is giving me big AnyAustin vibes lol. Love to see it!
Love this video, man – very excited to see this channel grow! Great content thats only gonna get better. Fun video topic, good commentary, and compelling throughout.
I love the Fallout 76 music in the background.
this video was more interesting than all quest that are in starfield
I love when people actually do deep dives in Starfield. Love ya.
all this anti corporate messaging in this game feels pretty empty considering it’s made by bethesda
Why is owen wilson making youtube videos?
Amazing vid, never think about Starfield food chains and suplys before
nice video, gj! i like ur earrings!
A banger Starfield video in 2025? We’re eating good today boys!
I’ve played for nearly 2,000 hours and I’ve never come across red harvest rice before.
V much an Any Austin influenced video
Soy they dunk it in sauce and it absorbs the flavor .
Food or healthcare is not a right. It is a need. You don’t get to eat or get healthcare by doing nothing or getting it for free. If you want it, work for it. It is no right.
made virtual food lore sound epic
If you delve deep into the lure and follow the vague clues and conspiracies briefly mention by the NPCs during the rare quests. The answer is there.
Like the process of coffee and the Asian palm civet. So it is the same with the flavours of the future chunks and the Terrormorphs. And like the Wombat, Terrormorphs put out prefect cubes for the final product.
So tuck in, while those chunks are still warm lol
how is this the best video about starfield , i would like to watch more of these videos about starfield , loved it
And people dare to say that Starfield’s lore isn’t deep
This is an amazing video! so good! Love content like this. Shared with a bunch of people 🙂
Engagement comment. Starfield gets a lot more hate than it deserves (even if it’s not as strong as TES or Fallout) so I’ll add my little bit to get it seen
wasn’t expecting that starfield had such a chunky lore. Nice vid as always🥳
Love the topic, feels like one of those old YouTube videos about Skyrim or fallout 4 that are exploring an element of the lore just for fun without being negative or anything. I miss that tbh so this is great!
Your fit looking fresh, my boy! 💯🔥👌
Bethesda truly did obsess over food
Going to leave a comment to invest in this vid early
Fire vid bro keep it up
I assume Tranquilitea wasn’t mentioned because you’re saving it for a two hour deep dive, so you’re forgiven.
Of course we all know Fred Blombart is a distant descendant of Longneck Lukowski
Thank you all for joining us at today’s annual shareholder Chunks luncheon.
Taking a quick lunch break from the introspection of how games make me feel, I thought a food lore deep dive would be a nice palette cleanse. If you spot any other food brands I missed, report them immediately to HR.
Thank you for your ongoing investment in nonsense.
