I added the “(often)” in there myself because I feel it’s more honest. I’ll let you know if MeUndies gets mad at me. I don’t think they will we’re on good terms. I would hate to be on bad terms with them because it would mean I would have to stop wearing their great underpants.
Anyway, I’m gonna be honest: For the first 5 hours of the game I thought Starfield was not very good, and now 30 hours into it I think it might be amazing. I’ll keep you posted. This is why patience is important. It’s okay if you didn’t like it obviously I can see why some people might bounce off. But it’s very much up my alley. I’m not just saying that because my new friends Jess and John and Rafael might be reading this.
That was sort of a lie. I did change the words “kinda bad” to “not very good” because I got self conscious about them reading me say Starfield’s intro was “kinda bad”. But now I’m telling you that so I guess we’re even and I’ve maintained my credibility.
Be safe have fun see you guys next time. I love this video.
Oh word
11:03 😂😂 cool little detail ahead…
17:57 Ahahaha, no. Nice try, TODD.
12:15 I’m so stoked you’re bringing this up
Your videos occupy more of my time than I should publicly admit 🙂 Well done 🙂
Those details are really important, it make the difference between being invested or not, it will really change my experience next time i never play this garbage game…
11:57 I think there’s only two possibilities. Either gensane or inius. Or really just one; yes.
Gave the video a like because it was interesting. Subscribed because of the sound of the censor beep happening immediately AFTER you said “f*ck” 😂
As a factory maintenance guy working with this type of thing: I think it’s cute that you think the engineers considers “maintenance access” when building and designing this type of stuff
You forgot #4 How many loading screens are in each pipe?
This is what happens when there is no other interesting content in a game for people to document on.
This kind of high-effort mundane content always brightens my day.
Developers fear him
Hit game? I mean that’s a bit of a stretch
Damn why is this game so shit, such talented people worked on it 😢
Oblivion remaster unemployment surveys??? Please?🥹
I feel like this has become an engineering channel and im ok with that. Get Learnt, Brain!
“hit” game?
please put more hair clips into your hair in the next video, this amount is not sufficient.
I refuse to believe bethesda thought that hard about this and didn’t just say “pipes look industrial just put lots of pipes in” given that 99% of the planets are barren, it doesn’t look like they gave a single shit about environment design
Put your thinking clips on class!
This video is based
The game is absolute garbage – no the pipes dont make any sense
I’m so excited for Any Austin to talk about Oblivion!
who cares there nothing in them its not real game sucks
the absolute state of breadtubers
Well I think it’s clear to say right from the start of the video that you put way more thought into this than the developers did.
its lazy map making to fill stuff up
what else does any austin have in store for starfield… or is he just going to move on to the oblivion remake
I am disappointed that in the far future of Starfield, they’re apparently still using metholox rockets instead of some godawful contraption like a lithium-flourine engine with extra hydrogen chucked into the exhaust to boost the ISP.
“hit”
now you’re rubbing it in
John seeing the pipe as part of heating / cooling is very similar to pipes you’ll see in places like Siberia that have “central heating” that pumps steam / hot water into apartment blocks in heavily insulated pipes like these.
Pipes.
Did he call Starfield a “hit”?
0:03
“..the HIT video game..” lol
Yeah, umm, no. Pronouns, no thanks.
You are crowned as the next Mat Pat after this
“Hit video game starfield”
Damn so we just LYING here
(This is a joke btw)
Wait until Any discover Star Citizen…
Will you do an osha, workplace safety walkthrough of starfield? And tell us what you think?
dude made starfield look interesting, wild.
I like the part where you acknowledged that reasonable justification can be made for most things with enough thought, so finding reasonable justification and reasoning cant even be used as super significant proof that your theories hold ANY water, but then you emailed the guys who made it so you can show us how smart and right you are lol
Hi,
Process engineer here who has build a bunch (10+) of LNG and other cryogenic liquid storage systems. Honestly, not much of the equipment nor your explanation makes any sense..
1. Spherical tanks are primarily used to reduce surface area to volume ratio to reduce boil-off rate. Used primarily in gas carriers with huge volumes and at low pressure (ie. liquid methane carriers, Moss tank, type B tank acc IMO). Tanks with elliptical or dished ends are very common up to ~20 barg – LNG will not be stored above this pressure.
2. High pressure is not required for LNG, alternative is -162°C is for 0 barg pressure.
3. The vertical tanks look like distillation columns, but would have no function as probably pure methane is already in a large storage tank.
4. Are there “bubbles” in the liquid – the answer is no. Not a great idea to store oxygen/air and a flammable compound in the same place. Bubbles of NG could be there, but usually bubbles will be homogenous with the liquid, at the saturation temperature or pressure. Designs don’t consider this. This type of buffer tank would be used typically for a flow control valve/flow transimitter, but the size looks much to big.
5. Where are the oxygen tanks to supply the space ship?
6. Vapour recovery systems, or Boil-off gas handling can be grouped in a few different types: subcooling, reliquefication or consumption. All of these more or less will require a compressor, unless you use the boil-off gas for a low pressure burner with slightly higher tank operating pressure
7. A pump is not required to move liquid so long as the operating pressure gradient can be ensured between the different units.
8. Tank isolation for LNG is typically vacuum insulation or polyurethane (200-400mm). Rock would be at ~-150°C and is not a good insulator in comparison.
9. There are no pressure relief valves on the tanks.
10. All the pipes are way too big considering the size of the tanks. For a flow of ~200m3/h you only need DN100 or 4″ pipes, with insulation they will be up to around 6-8″.
Make a night city architecture/design video pwease.
Where do i find the songs that he puts at the end of the videos?
Your videos remind me of literary analysis, where you deconstruct a text or narrative and make a thesis and support it with evidence.
My suggestions are to look at the campus infrastructure and odd and unremarkable spaces of Rockstar games Bully with the music turned down to zero.
Also, compare that to the college campus in the first level of Tony Hawk 4.
11:04 nice bleep censor
Prime 4 vagina doors?
I’m going to choose to believe that the reduced health hazard rating on liquid methane in Starfield means that humans can drink methane in the future
“hit” videogame, that word sure is doing a lot of heavy lifting
No, Starfield does not make any sense.
You called it a hit even though everyone hates the game now.
Only gullible people bought that game.
..and now I know this, too. Thank you, Austin. 🙂
God I love this insanely dry observational content. I watch them all. More please!
I’m sure someone else has already corrected you – but Liquid Oxygen is just cold, at room pressure. Not high pressure unless you’re trying to do weird things.
Methane being rocket fuel is actually surprisingly realistic. Pretty much all the “next gen” launch vehicles in the real world are using a methane/oxygen mix either partially (New Glenn) or exclusively (Starship.)
” hit “
Excellent, banger as usual
“Hit” bit of a strong word to use for that disappointing spaceship crash
Hell yeah
I’m so happy I found your channel. I used to work in fire protection and used NFPA guides day in and day out, and it was neat to see that pop back up. The hazard identification shown in Starfield could be for acetone by the way, so definitely not liquid methane.
It makes me happy to see someone go on the kind of research adventures you go on, it really shows that it’s important to know *how* to find information out. Good deal.
“boot up Starfield” I will not, but I enjoy your videos thoroughly!
Call it a hit game the way i hit uninstall after 2 hours
Ohhhh this is what super smart people do when they’re playing their video games. Meanwhile I’m just zipping around with my jetpack looking for stuff to get into all the while thinking my ship’s fuel is Helium-3 not Methane. 😆
Really outdid yourself with this one buddy
Truly loved this vid so much
that was a great video
“hit 2023 game starfield” none of these words go together
Austin breaking out those letters like Steve on Blue’s Clues.
I love Starfield.
next title for the video.
do this grass made any sense (insert game name here).
ofcourse it isn, because it use electricity!!
If you take the tour at New Homestead on Titan (which a lot of people unfortunately probably miss, I don’t think any quest ever leads you inside where the tour guide hangs out), the tour guide talks about the importance of New Homestead’s methane refinery to the evacuation of Earth!
11:02 i think you missed the censor. Just a hunch though.
A lot of these remind me of the distillery tour I took last week
Your videos cover such underrated aspects of game or level design and are frankly a joy to watch. Seeing people explore this stuff is almosf like when fans or even film company guys explore the props and set design for film or movie sets. You get to see a whole new side of the medium and the passion that went into it.
once again anyaustin digs into a video game i haven’t played, contacts people involved in the real creation of the game or the systems depicted, and delivers a smashhit. :’)
I started watching this, thinking it was all an elaborate joke, then half-way through realized “no, this man is genuinely invested in solving this mystery,” and by the end of the video I felt grateful for the effort put into making this for us. It was really nice that BGS reached out to verify your theories. It was an interesting watch.
really appreciate your recent gestures toward analytical rigor and source checking in your videos. it’s really good to remind people not to just accept the first answer they come to and actually put in the effort to fact check themselves and what they find
I can’t believe those designers got back to you that’s absolutely crazy and cool!!
I love your videos anyaustin
Here’s the problem with using that standard for the Yellow stripes, the top most cylinder is painted orange which is for toxic or corrosive material
Mr. Austin would you consider a video on more NFPA stickers in video games? You could do a game of Guess That Hazard 🙏
The mundane of our world has spilled over into the magic of others 🤔 why do I like it so much
Conclusion: fiction is arbitrary, and the final interpretation is up to each individual, but the inspirations or references might give it some context of its overall meaning/purpose
I know this isnt the ‘purpose’ of your videos, but i must say, I find I come to watch your videos when I’m overwhelmed by anxiety. Its like youre saying “no worries broseph lets just talk about pipes for a minute”
Listen, I get sponsors like raycon, nordvpn, fucking raid shadow legends, but … underwear??? *underwear* …
Seeing that you actually got ahold of the developers was an insane moment. This video legitimately had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Absolutely love your content.
wait… starfield came out 2 years ago… jesus
Dude your videos are the most random things I have ever seen but damn do I love watching them. 😂
Starfield’s true aesthetic: Pipecore
Oh boy, this brings out memories of my first engineering job. This is literally just line tracing, one of the first things they tell you to do when you’re new to a plant.
Seeing Starfield described as a “hit” was a little jarring ill be honest
I love that you were able to bring chemical processing analysis into the picture.
idk why i watched this but thanks youtube
Please always try to get answers from devs, this is great.
I still play Starfield, absolutely love it!
Actually, some types of rocket engine may not actually require an oxidiser, starfield engines might use Plasma-Magneto-Dynamic engines (or whatever the actual name would be) which accelerate and ionise the fuel with electrical power and magnetic fields rather than by burning it.
If methane is ever vented into the air, it’s burned because CO2 is a lot better than methane. This is why chemical plants often have those fires at the top of towers.
I know someone at Bethesda is so happy right now
Austin, please check out roads in cities in Oblivion. They’ve been driving me crazy, especially the imperial city. There appears to be a road in the middle, but instead of an incline there’s just stairs on the road itself? Maybe it’s not a road, but one of those medieval above ground sewer things? Can’t be, because of the stairs. I need you, each city is weird in how its built and I refuse to believe that it’s devs not thinking it through
Them still using the colours from today in the future for hazard marking is giving rail tracks being based on like Roman chariot wheel distances
since then starfield is a hit game it was lamest bethesda game ever
plot twist 4:30 🤯
Oblivion remastered have been released!! We need answers to where Cyrodiil’s rivers come from.
I love it when Austin talks about his underwear
You should try to map the electricial grid of New Atlantis based around that side quest of fixing the brown outs
Austin as your best friend i am so happy we have progressed to having actual fact checking from the designers themselves this is incredible
Please, for the love of all. Dont ever call Shartfield a “hit” game…
This is peak YouTube, amazing work.
I’d like to imagine your missing pump was probably built into the base of the spherical tank. Since it was buried over halfway in the ground, it can be assumed that it wasn’t “buried” so much as dropped into a hole in the ground and then covered over. Just like any electric pump we have today, it could’ve been built right onto the base of the tank & buried with it.
Bro put more thought into this one fuel system than the devs put into the entire game.
I am a stationary engineer and I work on heating and air systems. Big fan of pipes and liquid methane and storage tanks
As a mechanical engineer I can say with some authority that games always get pipework and other mechanical equipment wrong. It seems good until you take some time to properly look at it. Saying that I wouldn’t expect a game designer to put all the effort into designing something that would work IRL. They’d have to get qualifications/experience that they don’t really need and it would be massive time sink for very little gain. It’s actually quite Impressive that they at least try to think about how some of the IRL processes work though.
“”””””hit”””””” game
Imagine how bored you have to be playing Starfield to make an 18 minute video about the space station pipes.
Important space pipes!
I’m so excited for further Starfield videos. I’m one of those few people who think this game is surprisingly awesome.
hypothesis: one of the key advancements in SF is an oxidizer so potent that a man-portable tank of it contains enough for a shitton of space travel, so there’s rarely need to refill on it and when you do you can just slot in a new tank like it’s a propane grill.
These videos are my jam, a mix between video game analysis and random facts that I find interesting but I’ll never use in my entire life 🎉
The lack of isolation valves bothers me
In the case of the fuel storage tanks near the landing pads…YOU ARE THE FATHER
The UN number 1075 is for butane
When you opened the letter my boyfriend cheered
What you’re doing is not deductive work, it’s creative work. A game designer in Starfield doesn’t have to bother with completely accurate industrial infrastructure since it’s all just set design.
i am genuinely excited to learn what those numbers and symbols mean in that chemical diamond sign.
Thinking there is any reason or thought behind starfield is crazy
team up with bizly already you coward
– genius? insane?
– insane genius
I love that you’ve validated the work those guys put in.
Looking at it, it looks like someone just spammed a bunch of pipes because they thought it looked cool and industrial.
There’s no rhyme or reason to them.
Can we get an oblivion video next, they have bodies of water and trees. Stuff you like.
Uhmmm.
I’m not a geologist, and I’m also not very trained in thermodynamics, but based on what I learned during my first two years of engineering classes, I’d expect the idea of burying a tank for temperature reasons to be astronomically stupid.
Gagarin’s atmosphere is mainly composed of O₂, which is a bit strange, but we can probably expect some kind of greenhouse effect from the atmosphere — though it’s probably negligible here. Gravity is close to Earth’s, so we can expect a similar planetary size.
The rock is probably granite? I’m not sure, and it’s not that important, but it has decent thermal conductivity below 400°C.
Over the course of the day — and we have no information about its actual duration — the surface rock (granite) would heat up, and since the tank is buried and in direct contact with the rock, it would eventually rise to the same temperature… so around ~100°C. To cool the tank down, you’d first have to cool down the surrounding rock, which is not ideal because at night the rock will radiate all the heat it accumulated during the day. (And keep the tank at ~100°C, which we don’t want it to)
Simply insulating the tank above ground from stellar irradiation during the day would be a much better solution for cooling problems.
Time to go back to oblivion with the remaster
i love autism
“what cheaper way to do that than to just bury it in the ground”
Pretty much every way of keeping a tank cool is cheaper than burying it in the ground. Especially hard, rocky ground
USCSB chemical safety channel will show there’s another expected piece: the reactor
“Hit Video game Starfield” alone that was funny af you meant “Shit Video Game”
6:41 is gold
people do literally anything to not having to play the game itself it seems
Why is this shi5 on my main page i have a job and irl hobbies
Hit?
You should have just asked what they did because you bet they would give you wildly different answers. Of course they will agree because there probably wasn’t any real thought into kt
He’d have a field day with Neir Automata
I don’t even care that I’m listening to an underpants salesman
Me hearing the hazardous material system: “Wow, sounds like they actually did some research!”
Me a few minutes later: “Wow, sounds like they just found one example and pasted it everywhere…”
Dont the spaceships clearly have fusion reactors as thier fuel source in the ship builder?
Congrats on your future high paying consultant work with game designers.
great vibeo
Damn this channel has blown the fuck up.
THE “HIT” VIDEO GAME of 2023 STARFIELD……… yeah way to lose all credibility under 5 seconds
this actually makes me want to play starfield? hello?!?
dude, starfield in general doesn’t make any sense
@Z-Super1999
the vapor recovery tanks are in the air (30feet) because there temp doesn’t matter as much other than it being easier to relocate while being in a gas. in the heated days .
Fun fact after some research. Blue 1 red 3 and yellow 0 on the nfpa diamond is a label for thsse chemicals. Acetone, gasoline, alcohol methyl, jet fuels jet-b and jp-4
I will never get tired of AnyAustin’s analysis videos
I miss the unemployment series tho
“Hit game”
Ehhhhhhhhhh
Moreover is shaking rn
Need cybercry 2077
That was so satisfying, thank you so much!
You are one smart fellow
love the video, love starfield but when is the oblivion remastered employment video coming austin!?
Lol “hit” game .
You do know starfield is a video game right? So you wasted 19 minutes on nothing and then scammed a promo to talk about your junk…. BTW… Starwars wasn’t real either. Just because you act smart, doesn’t make you smart.
Also, side criticism, if you’re going to wear an outfit like that, pull up your pants. Your belt seems to be fighting gravity
7:39 Sam o nella?
Starfield wasn’t a hit. Everyone hated it and Bethesda should have spent the time on Elder Scrolls 6 instead of that crap.
that one evironmental artist would be over the moon that their efforts to model a functional rocket fuel system were not in vain
Hello Austin, a couple of corrections Liquid methane is low pressure nearly atmospheric and very low temperature. Pumps normally are submerged inside the tank. But liquid LNG is already quite pure so you wouldn’t need much else processing unless you need to vaporise it. That being said smaller tanks are pressurised so it might be true for the ones near the docking area.
That vertical tower could be a separation or even a liquefaction exchanger in that case the flow would need to be reverse so difficult to make sense of.
My 2c , yeah also a chem engineer 😅
Oh Christ you’ve opened Pandora’s box. Next you’re gonna have to review Mirror’s Edge’s air conditioner ducting
I suggested this exact idea back in the comments of the skyrim woodworking critique! I am in disbelief that this video came to exist, and I know full well you almost certainly did not see that comment!
Industrial Rorschach Test
Modern day poet
Austin really capitalizes on the “On the spectrum” demographic
vintage any austin iykyk fr
I bet it’s in here somewhere but. We need a census on the imperial city in the oblivion remaster
Have you thought about changing the name of the channel to Any Autistin?
My satisfactory builds have less pipes
Oh, huh, these are cool ideas
-starfield dev (probably)
GENIUSANE
It seems like a weird kind of disconnect between different levels of writers and designers to model many details of modern infrastructure down to the hazard markings but not into diegetic justification for why the culture has kept those elements frozen nearly or at least apparently nearly intact.
I know exactly what i wanted to do with my time…
perfect outro
I genuinely hope this channel makes game devs put more effort into the minute environmental details cause I doubt they think anyone takes note of these details
Neat video Austin , thanks :’)
You should do more starfield videos lol😅
Re: the email: I see that you got the important stuff out of the way first. Good job.
Finally some Starfield love. The hate bandwagon really has gotten old at this point and the game doesnt deserve it. It really is a very fun game with a beautiful story, fun and compelling quests and writing, and very very immersive space gameplay. Its frustrating how much hate it gets and how now I cant even listen to a Skyrim video without a 30 minute anecdote about how bad Starfield is. Thank you Austin. Best Youtuber ever
3:37 sounded like the FaceTime ringtone and it made me say “oh shit someone’s calling” out loud. Bravo
The “fucking” with the delayed, completely missed bleep had my dying
No oxidizer? No problem if they us thermal nuclear right?
Hypothesis/cope: since the methane is being stored and used inside spaceships, which have notoriously poor ventilation, they’ve made it safer to breathe as part of the refining process. So, if you have a leak, you don’t necessarily need specialized filtration systems to quickly remove it from the atmosphere; you can just let the crew breathe it for a bit without dying.
We found him, guys. It’s the guy that was still playing Starfield
It doesn’t matter if the pipes are accurate, the game still sucks!
Gagarin is one of my favorite looking planets
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Looks like Bridgeport CT.
5:24 well, it actually sounds reasonable, and then you remember that Bethesda deliberately went for the “nasapunk”, literally trying to make a design that mimics modern stuff but a bit in the future, lol xD
And honestly – I like this Starfield’s style, mostly. It has something to it
“Hit” is not the word I would use for the game
It should be helium -3 for fuel…
We need an Oblivion Remastered unemployment rate video now that its released 👍
Never expected anyone to mention starfield ever again, especially after oblivion release
It would be so cool to see an Any Austin analyze Cyberpunk 2077’s Night City in some shape or form 😊
6:55 so what materials score 4 in all categories?
Oh, so that’s where pipes come from. Neat.
After playing Starfield for awhile, helium-3 is fuel used for ships and would be the spherical shapes near spaceport are holding. Im ship builder allot of helium-3 tanks are spherical. As for the liquid cooled methane. You can learn of its uses it powering the settlement by going to New Homestead on Titan a moon of Saturn. By taking the tour.
You put more effort into this video than Bethesda did into the game
I used to design piping like this for factories as well as its main use power facilities a lot of people take tours and think oh just for liquids and gases none of them assume that a lot of the pipes used for high voltage as well
Those large cylindrical tanks could just be holding pressurised oxygen or normal breathable air for the interior of ships
Would also be labled as flamable
Seeing you get a response from Bethesda was so satisfying.
Nerd
Up voted.
does the tank say “methane” in all variant universes?
What’s wild to me is even those tiny pipes on the side of the tank shown around 00:26 aren’t even attached to the tank. They just didn’t pay any attention. Also, weird that most of these pipes clips straight into the tanks instead of having something like a sealing cap around the connection.
SPEAKING OF PIPES
giving the devs way too much credit. they probably used some AI tool to generate the area without a single thought.
your music is so good!
i think it would be fun to write a song with you cause you think so out of the box 💖
This is genuinely become my favorite channel. More enumeration! Do Morrowind in sections based on the great houses (Imperial, Hlaalu, Redoran, Telvanni.) It could be a four video series.
The people of starfield clearly lay pipe for the love of the game rather then for any function purpose
This reminds me of an image online,
My teacher: The blue curtains represent the author’s feelings about…
The Author: The curtains were effing BLUE.
I already knew about fire diamomds thank to sam 9 nella
can you do a video on satisfactory / factorio pls
This video is wonderful, and it’s awesome that you reached out to the environmental designers for the game! I hope it made their day 🙂
Is anyone going to mention that he has previously Google searched: “prime 4 vagina doors”???
does anything in starfield make sense, why actually did they have 16 trillion poly square fruit, why not just pack seeds if ur so worried about weight in ur magic scifi ftl universe
Did you really say that starfield is a hit? No no no. It was a miss, huge miss.
*bethesda developer watches this video:* “Yeah! That’s EXACTLY it! You’re smart as hell to figure it out, man! There’s DEFINITELY method to it!”
No
Talking about Starfield doesnt make any sense.
appreciate the critical and rigorous methodology you casually teach. go u bro ✨
Bruh! I just spit my dinner out everywhere with that second delayed BEEP!! If intentional that is god tier comedy.
Its crazy how after a decade of people saying “BUY ME UNDIES” it takes the “guy who talks about rivers, and pipes” to convince me to purchase.
It is very interesting for him to attempt to derive meaning from the fine details in this game when their ballistic weaponry would be literally incapable of firing due to design flaws. Bethesda only does so much research about why things are the way they are, or they only care so much about being faithful to that.
Okay you got me pretty good by just sort of throwing a bleep in the same room as the f-bomb and being done with it, that is some wall banana MOMA shit and I appreciate it.
What are prime 4 vagina doors?
Austin, there are two mice inside you. One is a genius, and the other is insane.
I would love to see a “where water goes” video on satisfactory
Thinking about the research you do to make these videos makes me want to un-alive myself.
I would think the the pump would be an internal pump in the middle of the unprocessed holding tank?
Factorio
My question is: how does the methane enter the system? Does the game include tanker ships that carry methane to the various holding facilities?
where are the custom captions? one of my favorite things about this channel is not having to rely on autogenerated captions
You should make a unremarkable places video for this game, I think it would be a hit, you could even make a series on it.
the whiffed beep at 11:05 was the funniest part and i hope you never change it
You definitely thought about this more than the people making Starfield.
Call Starfield a “hit” is a bit of a stretch. Great video though!
i really think these kinds of environmental details are things i hold high when i dream about the “best parts” of an open world exploration game. its too bad that there seems to be a lot lacking in other places of starfield, enough to lose interest, but design like this still is very exciting. if nothing else i see bethesda trying to level up. maybe they will be able to use these learning experiences in their next big drop to make it great.
Also, starfield space engines use hydrogen as fuel. You can see this in the shipbuilding menu, where a requirement is to have a certain amount of hydrogen tanks. This doesn’t necessarily disprove anything, as I’d assume spaceships need more than just fuel to operate various facilities, but that’s just something for consideration. I bet if you researched practical applications for methane you might find an application that a spaceship might use.
Im already aware of the Fire diamond from the Sam O Nella video but this was a nice refresher!
I hope that game designers genuinely see your videos and feel appreciated by them.
I also think its hilarious to imagine someone telling their boss they need more time on a level because the pipes aren’t realistic enough
11:03 The delayed bleep just killed me. 😂
No, it’s not fuel they are just fart smells, not smart fellas
imagine questioning if anything in starfield makes sense (it doesn’t)
good video aside from asking me to boot up starfield
Similarly to the hazard diamonds and the UN1075 placard in this, seeing the FEMA search and rescue assessment markings in Alien: Isolation was really… neat? Interesting? A piece of visual world-building that I appreciated, anyway; it’s nice when the devs use existing iconography where it’s reasonable to expect it.
Honestly we need analysis videos like this, but for Star Citizen.
“The more pipes, the more scifi” – Todd Howard probably
That’s so cool that you actually reached out to them and got a response! And very useful to finally know and understand what those diamonds mean– I always knew they had something to do with warning about chemicals but never how to actually decipher them, haha
I love Austin’s meticulous attention to detail.
Love that miss-timed bleep haha. 11:05
I’m just happy you’re happy ’bout that mail you got!
as a mechanical engineer pipes going nowhere and doung nothing raally pisses me off
that’s insanely genius. I have learnt so much!
2023. Guh where did the time go
“hit” starfield was most defiantly not a hit
you might hate this kind of comment but more GTA or LoZ content please lol love your channel tysm for actively posting
You love to see it!
I love these videos!
The only problem with this theory is that the game very obviously states that the fuel for the ships is Helium 3, that doesn’t make the methane thing wrong, it just means that those tanks probably aren’t used to store fuel for the ships.
I normally keep such minor complaints to myself, but Austin might have a lot of pedantic viewers who feel similarly, and it might be worth raising: I hate hearing that extraneous ‘and’ people like to shove into numbers, particularly dates.
Edit: Obviously, this comment alone is just a negative comment for Austin to ignore, but if I’m right and similar comments exist, and/or this comment gets a significant number of likes and agreeing replies (but what’s a significant number in this case?), it would/will be valuable feedback.
Autism
Half these tanks are actually just Coffee going through the decaffeination process😭
Starfield? A hit?
Just as a heads-up: 130 could be Unleaded Gasoline!
It’s great that these small design details and the people who worked on them get a showcase! They’re definitely underappreciated!
Love your work Austin. Every video of yours is like having a shift with a coworker who is deeply unusual socially but is my favorite person to work with because he never runs out of interesting shit to say. Big fan of the completely unaddressed hairclips as well.
You should collab with JuniperDev
Nice. Imo it’s the best video so far.
Please do Arma Reforger waterways or electrical lines. I’ve followed them and they’re great.
Its just too bad I care less about Starfail then I care about the worlds largest ball of yarn……..
More of this please. I have just fallen in love with mechanical engineering and safety signage standards because of this. Amazing how many cool things humans have designed.
What’s their explanation for valve placement and access?
Another brilliant video learning some random facts about random things all because of random stuff found in games 😂
Thank you, Austin! As someone who actually really enjoyed Starfield, I love seeing something positive about it the game when the internet is full of negativity about it.
Can’t wait to point at one of those labels like “wuh oh! That’s pretty unstable!!” and win lots of friends and influence people
Please make a video on Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. There’s so many interesting details that I think you and us (your audience) would enjoy.
Regarding standards persisting for long periods of time, we still use many arbitrary standards that originated thousands of years ago.
Your editing skills are getting so good yo
Proportional to the number of hairclips
What’s in his hair in these videos?
Great, now if only Bethesda spent their time and resources polishing their games instead of sending press releases to fanboys
That’s so cool you talked to the people that created these things! Love these videos
This is probably the first time I’m actually impressed by Starfield!
Who would have guessed its because of the ingame piping!
pls do odd unremarkable for oblivion remastered 🙏🙏
No one gonna ask about the previous searches at 5:07? just me curious about the prime 4 Doors?
7:50 shocked that Any Austin did not look up the 4-digit DOT placard next to the NFPA 704. That one is Hazard Class 3 – 1075 (Liquified Petroleum Gas)
Ight ur dragging it bro find a new format
Ah yes, my favourite employee from department of labor, Anya Ustin
I happen to work at a rocket engine test facility so here’s some thoughts no one asked for.
Liquid methane/oxygen don’t necessarily HAVE to be stored at a high pressure. They just need to be at a high pressure if you want them to be warm. You can keep a tank of liquid methane at ~ambient pressure as long as you can keep it at -260 deg F (through a well-insulated tank). Same for LOX @ -297F.
You definitely wouldn’t want to keep your LOX and LNG right next to each other / on top of each other if you can help it. That’s a recipe for disaster.
Overall, pretty good stuff! Warms my heart to see more parts of the space industry being represented in fiction, not just the flamey fun part.
Never played star field. Awesome video
Amazing as always! Great work!
wow, this video really was a banger
This is amazing. As a level designer, I always want to pay attention to why things are placed in my levels and how. Because exactly like this, the devs could have just placed pipes and tanks for decoration or guiding the player. But they took the time to do research in order to justify the environmental storytelling.
After this video I learned little about starfield but a lot about pipes 👷♀️oh and how to read the diamond , I don’t remember what you said ,but it was cool you said it
“hit” and Starfield in the same sentence?
Is it a hit?
i wish my pc could run this game with stable frames…
the audio?
For all the problems with bethesda games, they do a good job with their art, sound and level design.
Aren’t the rockets in Starfield nuclear-powered? If so, then for this fictional universe the only “fuel” you would need is methane. It gets used as reaction mass that’s piped into the little nuclear reactor at the back of your starship and then propelled out of the rocket to produce thrust.
Well if they copied real world stuff for inspiration…
Then you probably aren’t seeing a refueling station but a pumping station and tanks for transferring the gas to and from a cargo ship. Which would need transfer tanks and whatnot. You would also need some kind of inert gas in the lines to prevent fire/explosions so those tanks on top could be that gas as it would need to come out before you opened the system or you would end up mixing it into your already clean system.
That misaligned bleep pleased me
12:03 genius and insane is a fine line, and often walk hand in hand. ❤😂
я тибя люблю
I’d love to see this man cover the portal games, whatever he wants to cover I don’t mind I just wanna see him discuss the portal world
Dam… I was really hoping to see you in me undies.
😂 🤣
I’m straight btw.
This is the perfect game for you, Austin, it’s the most boring game I’ve ever played! lol you have a plethora of boring places you could find
The question for me is, if I send back my meundies , does that mean someone else will wear them? Makes you think…
Wow, that’s awesome that he actually got feedback from the developers on this one.
Austin pr3supping himself episode. Love ya boss
Another great video! I hadn’t heard the term “packins” before, every studio I’ve worked at have called them “kits”, like a model kit. Just goes to show how terminology is extremely not standardized across studios, even within the same country or language.
can you do videos about cod infinite warfare? pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee its very similar to starfield
The tanks near the spaceship landing pad are more likely to contain Helium-3, which is used as a grav drive fuel ingame
Unjustly Overly hated game.
Same reason why in FF7 Rebirth there are pallets on top of mountains. And barrels. Don’ t ask questions, just consume.
I love this channel so much. I imagine there are plenty of devs who would love to answer questions like this. You just helped make an artifact for a future age
11:05 somebody missed the bleep Lmao
Damn imagine designing a whole realistic methane storage system in a game and the game itself is never that in-depth.
been watching you since the egg busting days. in a way I suppose what you’re doing now is just more egg busting, which is amazing and im glad to see how much your channel has grown.
Cyberpunk pipes?
the word “Hit” in hit 2023 videogame is doing a lot of heavy lifting…
don’t wanna know why you were googling those things…..
11:04 who did this censor lol
I would love to see you visit Star Citizen. It focuses on realism and the designer’s have done a great job.
maybe the pipes contain underpants. who knows
Starfield is a 2023 game?
It’s because of stuff like this that I just can’t help but really enjoy Starfield.
omg im so happy to see starfield content
Dude I was so happy for you when you got that email lol. So cool
Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling…
Love the mis-timed beep lol
Austin should do an unemployment survey of the Imperial city from Oblivion
My first thought, “This is what I end up building in satisfactory, tbf”
Without watching the video beforehand I’d like to say you’re giving Starfield too much credit assuming that… Love ur videos btw
Ok I’ve been watching his videos for months now, and at first I thought he was just training his hair to comb backwards, but it’s been a long time. Is this just a fashion statement or is he still training his hair back?
I’ve just done gas training at work at the steel plant and I feel I learned more from this video
This video is the most fun I’ve had with the game.
I think it’s just about time to name the channel “Awesome_Austin”. I really like your vision and interpretations of such things that i personally did not really think while playing. That’s really cool! Thank you!
Any Austin / Milo Rossi collab when???
Starfield is really though through. I heard they even had consultations with NASA about space stuff when they were developing the game. It is just shame that other elements are breaking it.
Still I enjoyed this aspect of starfield, seeing all those designed areas and some of them are truly worth screenshoting.
Thanks for great video and and thanks devs for taking time to correspond with you
Dude, the intentional mismatch for censorship has been a GREAT joke every time. I’ll be watching one of your videos while I work and burst out laughing. I love your sense of humor being tossed at these games, it’s very funny.
Star fields worlds are suspiciously well thought out. Each planet has seasons, different day lengths, orbits, moons that can be seen with phases and positions in the sky. I feel like the game was originally supposed to be much different
i
yes
i enjoy this
very much
heres a video suggestion for you, just how accurate is spider-man 2’s New York?
I’m sorry but I just can’t get myself to be interested or engaged with starfield like I can literally any other game you’ve featured. Satrfield just put such a bad taste in my mouth
Perhaps I treated you too harshly, Starfield.
“the hit 2023 videogame starfield”
do you mean the tremendous flop that is so fundamentally screwed on every conceivable level that even bethesda modders, whom are some of the most fanatically devoted to their hobby people in the world, even gave up on it?
yeah i just had to say it
starfield sucks
“Enjoy video games” What a breath of fresh air having a nice video about one of my favorite games and it leaving me appreciating it even more. Catch a smile out there. o7
Methane boils at -161~ celcius. Those pipes would be so icy if there actually was liquid methane in them.
I know nothing about Starfield or Chemical Engineering. But the planet’s called Gagarin so maybe it’s a tribute to what few images remain of the CCCP’s design ethos. “If you build it, they will come” kinda thing.
I was actually ready to answer the Hazard Diamond question since I’ve been learning about them in college.
Why is this game so much more accurate for holding Methane than making their guns make sense
The editing on your videos is always charming
“Starfield has computers all over the fuckin’ BLEEEEEEEEEEEEP place.”
Oh Austin, making videogame based hyperfixation relatable and entertaining.
You should go into oblivion remastered and see the unemployment rate of each city
damn, that mistimed bleep at 11:04 lmafo
YES STARFIELF THANK U
Regarding the aforementioned pouch; what if one has 2 out of 3 of the parts named in the read? I’ll let you decide which two. Anyway, would this prospect still qualify??
Man, I really like your videos. You’re brining such a fresh, creative view on gaming content, and I watch every one of your videos with that little novel excitement of seeing videogames / digital art in a new light.
This is the most amazing development in any of your videos that I never would have expected and love.
“Hit 2023 game Starfield” is the only bit of misinformation in this very informative video. Thank you.
Meundies has got to be a The Room reference.
I love this stuff man, your scratching a part or my brain I didn’t even know what there .
One of your best videos yet. Before watching this, my immediate and only thought was “yeah, that’s all just AI placed random ‘spaceport stuff’”
redundancy is a nice touch in their design.
As a minor nitpick, I think you can also have liquid methane without (much) pressurization if it’s cold enough, but pressurization allows for higher temperature.
The meaning of the hazard diamond has actually been lost to history in Starfield lore, they just copy it unknowingly as a kind of abjurative rune to protect from chemical accidents
My pipe network in Satisfactory was laid out better than this
YEEEEEEEEE333AAAAHHH PIIIIIIPESSSS
The tanks by the landing pad are for sure helium 3
Spent the first half of the video thinking “man, wouldn’t it be cool if any_austin could reach out to the devs and verify their hypotheses”, then you did! Great job, love to see it.
This was great for learning about this gas/liquid but you KNOW you hyped us up just to get us to think there was an 18 min video following pipes and whatnot. You just went over the large objects 😢
5:25 That’s actually not wierd at all. The coloured lights used to mark the sides of satellites, space stations and planes were first designed for trains in the 1800s. If it ain’t broke, it probably won’t be fixed any time soon.
Oh wow, Starfield! They put so much fun work into it! Wow, I didn’t realize how much detail it had!
“Hit”
You already made me laugh.
I’m blind and misread that as Do Seinfeld’s Pipes Make Any Sense
Mad they put this much effort into something no normal person would appreciate, and yet none of them understand how a gun works
I’ve never been this hooked by a video about PIPES from a video game that I didn’t play or cared about. Well done.
I’ve been playing Space Station 13 lately, and it’s very fun to follow the pipes, wires, and tubes around there because they’re all functional and moving specific things around the station (and sometimes you have to be able to diagnose faults and fix them when they break). It’s also fun in real life to look up at the ceilings of buildings where you can see bundles of dozens of pipes and cables and think about the fact that someone had to plan all that out and decide that all those tubes were needed for something. I had a summer job once digitizing maps of pipes like that in buildings, and even pretty normal non-industrial buildings have SO many pipes to keep track of. What were the pipes all doing? …Who knows, the map was actually a map of asbestos insulation on the pipes. I think a lot of it was steam and hot water from a district heating system. I kind of went off on a tangent here but what I’m trying to say is pipes are cool and it’s neat that every little thing in our society had to be designed by someone.
Just because a packin was designed to be generic and modular, doesn’t mean that individual artists didn’t then use real world referance as insiration with a lil creative liberty to create a system similar to how you theroised it to be. Thats to say that yes artists often do have some intent, sometimes backed by facts, sometimes observation or often just a gut feeling (does it feel right) so whatever conclutions you draw I’m 100% sure its got the artist who designed it giggling inside cus they did a good job.
The “hit” 2023 video game
Whenever there’s an area in a video game that’s set in a place with a lot of exposed pipes, I always wonder how much effort the environmental artists put in to actually making them make sense, if any at all.
Next video is going to be “Boring places I found in Starfield” and it’s going to be 100 hours long.
12:00 you’re an insane genius maybe
starfield is so bad im learning things about liquid gas storage because of their mistakes
If I ever (learn to) make a game, it will be specifically designed for these videos. The rivers will have a starting point that makes sense and spill into an ocean, the pipes will make sense, and the birds will eventually land
I really wouldnt have expected anyone from Bethesda to reply, thats pretty neat
That number code next to the diamond in the doctors office is also a fun thing to look into. Every chemical is assigned a 4 digit code, and video games sometimes just put random numbers which implies some funny things sometimes. That one in the doctors office I believe is for compressed oxygen. Also it’s supposed to be on the container holding the chemical, not the wall
7:22
“They’ve given it a 1-3-0 rating”
Huh, would’ve thought it’d be a little more damaging to he-
“The actual, real-life rating for liquid methane is . . . 3-4-0”
That sounds about right.
This is so cool. Please loop in the developers of games more often, it’s so great to learn about their process (especially when it was done on purpose!)
“We just got an e-mail from the guy who made this tank! This is my dream come true!”
Never change ❤
18:44 GTA 3 type beat
Yes give me the pipe Austin
I put a bit of liquid methane in my meundies after an Indian meal
RDR2 pipe video next please 🤞
11:03 when you miss the bleep for the swear it just makes me realize that the bleep doesn’t actually protect me from the swear. I’m just now conditioned to expect bleeps when people are swearing.
Because when I heard you swear I waited a moment for the bleep and then it came. It wasn’t unexpected at all that there was a bleep afterwards
Austin you are ON>A>ROLL. You are amazing.
What’s in your hair, I don’t get it (but keep up the great work!)
Starfield is such a visually unappealing game, I always forget until I see it again. Yikes.
There isn’t a lot I could care about with Starfield, but if you’re talking about it, I care. Great video.
5:06 im genuinely curious what does “prime 4 va…. doors” mean?
As someone who works as a chemical plant designer, I really enjoyed this video! I always get hyped, when I see pipes in games and beginn to annoy my friends with useless pipe facts.
“Hit” and “Starfield” don’t belong in the same sentence unless it’s something like “If you keep trying to get me to play Starfield, I’ll hit you”.
I am a Paramedic and you just gave the best presentation on the hazard diamond I have seen, lol.
If you arent already a civil engineer you 100% belong in the field and should pursue it
Another great video as always on a surprisingly entertaining subject!
“it’s like finding the corner pieces when doing a puzzle” is actually one of the best analogies for this stage of investigation. Nailed it and I’m stealing it for my courses
I worked at Freeport LNG off the coast just south of Houston TX from 2019 to 2023.
My role was a contractor who would use a thermal gas imaging camera to locate leaks for maintenance (and to keep the EPA away)
I’m no expert on the pipe systems themselves, but from walking those routes every day for 4 years, I really appreciate the kind of effort that went into this section of Starfield.
Even more, I appreciate the effort of this video analyzing it.
There’s more gameplay in this video than in Starfield itself.
that’s fun but nice details in awful games just means the resources went to the wrong department, sadly
The late beep on the f word made me laugh harder then it should of
That video almost made me want to play Starfield, this is insane..
Just had the realization that I can get myself to be invested in almost any topic, as long as the person telling me about it somehow connects it to video games. Which is a little sad. Anyway thanks formaking these videos, godspeed
I like how he misses his bleeps by like a second every time hehe
I love Bethesda environmental artists
I find it kind of sad that such talented and passionate peoples spent so much time on something with such potential, for the game to end as the wasted product it now is…
I think it’s really cool the the artists got in contact with you. The fact that they’re aware of someone looking this closely at their design choices might make them consider the realism of their designs in the future.
Man, damn you put in the work! 100’s or even 1000’s of years from now, your work will be looked at, along with games and other media as what 2020-2025 thought the distant (or not so) future would look like.
For every 100K subscribers Austin gets he adds another hairclip.
*this is the autism I live for*
The tanks being full of methane was just design choices because everyone at Bethesda was so used to sniffing their own farts thinking this was a well thought out and designed game.
unsubcribe
2:00 I am excited for that! I always wondered how you read those, can’t wait
He called Starfield a “hit”. Heh
I love this channel so much.
Please please please do more Starfield! Great vid mate, keep up the great work 🙂
I love your videos. You are so cool and very smart, it is also awesome that you are anti nazi and pro science which is extremely Patrick Bateman gigasigma 💜
OMG WOW THAT’S REALLY AMAZING
I didn’t know i wanted this. But God damn. Does your voice make me care so much about all these realistically unnecessary info. My only complaint is the length id love kinda videos but 45mins-3hrs… that’d be my dream…
yay consistency. Ty for another Friday video Austin, love your work
This really is the best starfield video on the internet
TLDW
Bethesda did their research but also made some shit up
@14:13 everywhere I look something reminds me of her.
Love this!🎉
Can we expect a video soon from the Bureau of Labor Statistics on the employment rate of the inhabitants of Cyrodil in the newly released Oblivion remastered?
Bethesda autismum is a special kind lol
I think it’s actually so cool you heard back from the devs. I might replay just because of this video.
Awesome that John and Rafael reached out to you! Thanks for shining some light on this. I think the two un noted tanks just go to show how these big levels are the work of a whole team of designers working together to make a final product.
So much respect for your intellectual honesty, Any Austin.
I don’t know what to do with my time, and you did it
I appreciated the Kraftwerk reference. That’s one of the albums on my sleepy time playlist! :3
EDIT: That’s so cool that you were able to receive fact checks from the artists, themselves!
I can only applaud that you set expectations high by promising a banger, and then you over delivered.
I’m a minute in and already my brain is screaming, “The devs didn’t think about this for a single second! The pipes are just there because someone thought they looked sci/fi.” This is Bethesda we are talking about. This is Emil we are talking about. They can’t even be bothered to think through their story, much less anything about environmental storytelling.
Do more starfield I love this.
Think you could see how realistic the mining on Mars is?
I’d say that anywhere there are two similar tanks side-by-side, one of them is for methane, and the other is doing the same thing for oxygen.
Death of the Author: You’re right for you 🙂
Get ready to look at how the structure of guns work in Starfield
Nothing in Starfield makes sense
Bethesda hates to see Austin coming
Absolute masterpiece, best video yet! The follow through from the creators was amazing, I’m glad they wrote back! That late bleep, I really love your subtle sense of humor
I love watching your autistic videos. I only have one off-topic question. why are you always wearing hair pins? why not let your hair flow naturally? 🤔
Unironically, I feel personally offended that you call Starfield a “HIT video game”.
5:52 nah, most Americans think the USA is the whole world, so this is not a surprise
Neat.
You just tossing your ideas about stuff out there is obviously the point and is what’s entertaining about your videos.
But ACTUALLY getting fact checked by the devs who put the stuff there is SUPER cool. I hope you manage to do that more in the future! Unfortunately you pick some of the most tight lipped devs’ games to talk about (Rockstar and Nintendo) so idk if it’ll happen in the future but man I hope so.
The futures is pipes
But He-3 is the fuel for ships in starfield. It’s stated in the game
Liquefied natural gas is not stored under pressure. It’s just a very cold liquid. In rocket applications it’s pumped around, but that’s the limit of the pressure it exists under.
Bro held up 6 month old unwashed undies
“hit” 2023 video game might be optimistic XD
Super cool you reached out to the developers and that they responded! It validates your channel and all of us nuts that love your channel.
Have you reached out to the developers of the other games you have covered?
Is this the fun part? Someone finally found it?
9:00 Thanks a lot for the Celcius conversion, Austin
That bleep timing 😂
i can imagine how much john and rafael would appreciate this video, like, your work as an artist got people invested interest and analysis, it’s just wholesome
7:40 what does it mean? rating of what?!
yes … YESSSS! FINALYY!
Well, if I had to guess. I’d say the pipes are probably piping things. I’m no pipe scientist though.
Having 3-4-0 downgraded to 1-3-0 might make sense given the time span if they’ve had sufficient advances in the fields of medicine and ‘Oh god oh god it burns it burns let me die’.
i KNOW this is the only way i could become interested in playing through starfield
6:04 This valve lever is truly baffling. 1. It’s enormous. Who’s pulling this? 2. It’s in the air. How do they reach it?
the 3 second delayed beep killed me lol
Great video, so cool to get a response from the developers! Hope we’ll see more of that. And I would love more Starfield videos.
Me seeing the title of this vid: They can’t even make the QUESTS make sense, you think the pipes will?
Also me: Watching anyway
How come Bethesda devs will actually answer your autistic questions about pipes, but when I ask the subnautica devs my autistic questions about the orbital dynamics and planetary system structure of 4546B they give me an “uhhh idk lol” 😭 You have to do a video on this for me PLEASE
Calling this is a hit is an insult to hits.
archeologists are not engineers, so when they see something they cant understand what its.
i dont even understand why we have a field called archeologists, they go and try to give meaning to things they have no idea about.
its like finding an old computer from now in the far future, and make a random person try to make sense of it, instead of asking an engineer of that time.
10:05 I was playing minecraft while watching this and that noise scared me a little, since in old versions the hostile enemies made that noise lol
I wanna be a science teacher as an excuse to make ppl watch your videos
another banger of an episode! keep up the good work! your videos are always a big highlight of my day when they come out!
austin you’re awesome man. quite literally only getting better. great dialogues, interesting perspectives, and journalistic agency. you’re a gem. one in a million. diamond in the rough.
Please for the sake of everything holy don’t call starfield a hit…
I comment to help statistics
one of the weirdest but somehow interesting channels
I have issues with Starfield but I can appreciate the artists vision here.
I got tricked into watching a chemistry for beginners video
The Red diamond placard @7:52 with the (1075) number on it is what you want to be looking for to identify what chemical is either being stored or transported
this channel is so freakin… I don’t know.
I for one am very excited to learn about the little coloured diamonds with the numbers in them
As a solo dev that’s making a space exploration game, this video is really useful, thanks a lot.
Canonically the ships run off helium 3 fuel in game
I have never played this game, I will watch this in full.
your editing just gets better and better! hell yeah man
My assumption was that the cylindrical tank would hold the fuel and the spherical tank would hold the oxidizer. I have no basis for this assumption however.
Plant workers knew exactly what that was the moment they saw it lol
Does Starfield make any sense? 🤔
Starfield ships use helium-3 as fuel for their fusion engines in the game. So the methane tanks must be for another purpose. It is more likely that Starfield cities use methane as a heat source, burning it like we use “natural gas” today (which is over 90% methane). This would make sense, since the city structure would realistically lose a lot of heat to the cold atmosphere/lithosphere of whatever planet it was built on, and thus the city would need constant resupply. I also happen to be a former scientist and aspiring game dev, so thanks for the content, man. People like you put a spotlight on the little parts of great games that make them hit so hard in the first place, imao.
I love this. Yours vids are great.
I love Starfield. It’s has such an attention to detail all over the place. All the little warning labels on your ship and Rev-8. It’s not… the best BGS game, but it is one of my favorites.
Something I love about the developer response is that it makes you remember the fact video game worlds, even as realistic as some may appear, are typically built by artists, not engineers or geologists, etc. A given artist may have a passion for the engineering, geology, etc. to inform their creation, but more often than not the artistic task is to make an area, entity or object feel believable rather than trying to achieve something realistically sensible or functional.
I’m mildly irritated that you are suggesting that it could be worth my time to play starfield 😉
You weren’t lying when you said the next video was gonna be a banger video. This was 11/10. Loved every second of this🎉.
The level of realism and detail the devs put into the world of Starfield is exactly the reason why I love it so much. Most of the things shown in the game are based in real scientific theories and technology. From the way colonies are built to even the grav drives. It’s a kind of sci-fi that I think doesn’t get explored very often and just feels so nostalgic in the best ways possible.
I love your channel , how in depth you get.
But honestly, starfield , is so big and insanely detailed, but also very copy paste with it’s detail and in general.
I like that john responded but he also to me didn’t sound well. Its good to imagine but it sounds a little lazy. Thermal pipes are not what i thought of at all. I just see pipes. Some fine details would’ve been nice.
Maybe its me. Its a decent game but. For what it is…bro.
I love you for you though. You just gave starfeild its (skimped out on in my option) finer details i never noticed and never would’ve noticed.
That feeling when you nail the astrophysics but drop the ball on SDS labels.
11:04 the f word pass here😂😂😂
Legit the best YouTube channel out there
This man did a better job getting people interested in starfield than bethesda ever did
Kraftwerk mentioned @11:00
prime 4 vagina doors?
“Its gonna involve me teaching you how to read those little colored diamonds, so I hope you’re excited about that” LITERALLY WENT “OOOOOOOOOOO”
Trying to go to sleep, and then I see this…
Also, once a year I have to do an online training going over what that hazard diamonds means, in case I have to mess with cleaning chemicals or something…. It’s kind of annoying, but I guess it doesn’t hurt to know.
The editing in this one is your best yet. 🧑🍳💋👌
i love your videos because i always assume the designers thought “pipes. pipes cool.” and left it at that. but they actually had to know things to make these structures. same with the electricity in gta, and hydrology in zelda, and all that stuff. it’s not perfect but it’s a lot more thought and effort than “good enough.”
also, huge props for the self-reflection at the end
At first I was thinking they don’t…but then Austin showed his underpants. Now I am more confused, but it makes more sense
this is the most ive ever cared about starfield
this is awesome
I gotta take some time to forget your name
Another episode of Autism.mp4!!! My favourite
you sure do like boxers…and pipes
I’m not sure I would have called this a ‘hit’ game, but I get it
Wait, it was a hit??
this is the coolest video about pipes I’ve ever watched
are you making a video about the exit signs in starfield next? Because if so i cannot wait, and if not, i cannot wait until you do lol
My wife always jokes that I really like dumb, boring youtube videos. Well friends, this is JUST the kind of dumb, boring youtube video I can get behind.
TWO THOUSAND TWENTY THREE? TWO FUCKING YEARS AGO?
Working with LNG for my living, I can tell that all of this was pretty accurate and made sense. The LNG pumps we have are in small containers (called sumps) and the actual pump is submerged in the LNG inside the sump, so they look like small cylinders instead of what you normally would consider a pump to look like.
I guarantee you the devs put only the slightest bit of thought into this and didn’t care if it made sense. They just used key art and made models. You’re placing structure where there is none. It only makes when you bend the logic of ‘how’. The devs don’t know they just placed pipes and tanks.
it’s crazy to see the artists designing pipe layouts put so much thought into their work when the guns in this game are so fucked up it’s not even funny
The thought that goes into the shit that most of us overlook is amazing and thats why I love you, Austin.
I really fucking (bleep) like this video
This shows that at least two thoughts was put into the design of Starfield, which is more than thoughts than i would have assumed tbh.
Most of your videos are already bangers but the actually talking to a source who was involved in the design process was really something. Did you have to do anything special to get in contact with them or did you just like look at their linked in?
Huge fan of the delayed censor beep
your song at the end goes crazy! i have always loved how you incorporate your own music into your videos.
Yaaayyyy pipes video!
Good thing you didn’t do a video about Starfield’s rivers.
I love the self-reflection at the end.
Check your theories and get confirmation
I wasn’t aware that smallant made these types of videos
Your output is impressive Austin! I love it but know we can be patient if you need some time off eventually <3
But I still need to know how many of them have jobs
speaking of detail i need you to find some kind of video to make where you talk about how detailed the food models in this game are. for gods sake the lime even has a blemish and the chunks apple just blows my mind. maybe you could figure out what chucks is actually made of? thats a free idea for ya if you want it.
The tanks could be made of much stronger materials than we have today to contain liquid methane.
I’m confused about the claim about cylinders having weak points at the seams, and therefore that’s why you would use those for gaseous methane as opposed to liquid methane.
We have *very* high pressure gas cylinders that hold thousands of PSI of various gases – for instance, I have a cylinder of Argon with ~1800psi in it in my garage right now. Additionally, large spherical tanks do exist – especially on ships that transport natural gas (which is basically what Methane is) – but as far as I understand it, the methane is cooled until it’s a liquid not compressed until it’s a liquid.
As interesting as this video is (and it is indeed very interesting), the assumption about pressures and why some tanks are spheres while others are cylinders doesn’t quite work out by my estimation.
It is entirely possible to be 100% correct, and also insane at the same time 😂 Though, I don’t think I have a very compelling case to be calling you out for insanity since I’m here watching this video and enjoying it 😅
me undies now with dick pouch.
Random request… can you make video on original Everquest factions? I know this is ancient stuff, but I never really understood how this all worked
I mean from original everquest through Velious
Excellent as always Austin, love your work!
“The hit 2023 game Starfield” is a wild way to start this video.
I don’t caaarrreeee
no way im looking for a vid to watch while space travelling in starfield just to get you doing a vid on starfield. cant wait to find out what all these random pipes are for other than to tell me where i might find a trader on the moon
As a computer design coordinator of an industrial and commercial union plumbing and pipe fitting company, thank you for your work to figure out crazy piping in starfield and hopefully other video games. Maybe borderlands?
Love your videos!
I think they also use hydrazine in rockets? I’m not sure if it is an oxidizer or not, I’m no rocket scientist
6:00 might be fractional distillation columns. You can take crude oil and extract methane from the top in such a manner.
Not to get preachy but, for all the problems and woes that starfield dows have and there’s certainly a lot, its pretty clear from interviews and little deep dives like these that in no way was starfield some abysmal failure nuke, but rather a very flawed game that still has some genuine talent and passion under the hood to the extent that hopefully the dlc’s and expansions can further build upon, or be addressed and a formula dialed in on in the sequel.
I think the most interesting thing I learned from this video is that Austin doesn’t have his name sharpied onto his underwear like all those nerds in cartoons do 🤣🤣🤣
Starfield was rad. its got some problems and maybe doesn’t hold up to Bethesda’s past games like Skyrim, but its still really cool.
The pump is likely inside the large spherical tank.
I used to work as a chemical engineer and I’m super impressed by this video and would not be surprised if I learned you have an engineering background 👀
Po co mu klamerki na łbie?
bada-bing! me undies just appeared in ur hands!
Bleeping the “fuck” late was comedic gold.
This is the sort of content we are here for
“Hit” game Starfield??
“hit” game
Regarding the light approach to canon concept, this is something that Todd mentioned in an interview talking about the idea of canon itself (PAX East 2019 if you’re interested. So even beyond this response, I would probably say it’s a part of Bethesda’s story design philosophy in general.
Todd Howard: “Like I said there, people want to know truth, but even my perspective is one version of truth of what happened in the history of Elder Scrolls and so forth. I would tamper their desire to have all mysteries revealed, because mysteries are good for a fantasy world to have.”
So glad that even in the distant future we’re still releasing industrial amounts of methane gas into the atmosphere. It really warms my heart to see future generations carrying on our traditions 🙂
Star Citizen Next ??
This game has so many opportunities for videos can’t wait
Sidenote idk why but I just have this feeling you should check out things in Lethal Company, if that game interests you. There’s just something about the vibes in Lethal Company that makes me think of these videos. It’s got that empty lonely energy that makes me feel weird. Very anyaustin coded
More enumeration!
I wouldn’t be surprised if piping standards of the 21st century continue to be used or built upon in future centuries. They’re world class specs with decades of both research and proven use, engineered to near perfection. The only arbitrary things might be the specifics on which sizes are used specifically but otherwise it would be madness to try and reinvent hundreds of years of proven standards without very good reason
isnt the fuel cannonically used by grav drives and ships explicitly He^3 not methane? i suppose it would be possible for the grav drive to run on He^3 and the ship boosters themselves to run on methane, but i swear i remember the fuel tanks in the ship builder/the almost pointless fuel indicator on the star map as well as several bits of dialouge all explicitly state that ships or at the very least grav drives run on He^3
17:54 Gonna pass, videos are good enough for me.
Austin is the greatest in every way other than the way he pronounces the word other
Please do armored core 6
I know its gonna be a good day when Austin starts talking infrastructure
You did it man, you’ve got vibes within your work that further my confidence in my own life’s journey. Thanks and great job!
Your videos, omg, such attention to detail. Love this sh*t! Keep ’em coming!!
absolutely loved that they reached back to you and also had interpretations of their own!
“In the future, we made methane less flammable…
Also space travel.”
I’m glad you’re showing this game some genuine but critical love. I like it a lot even though its not 100% lol, but it seems a lot of the community has a bunch of negatives to say about it. Anyway this was a nice take.
I’m glad to see some love for Starfield. As a big fan of the game I was sad to see the hate train it received from the majority of the internet, especially since it soured everyone’s opinion on the game and prevented interesting and fun content like this to be created around it.
11:03 good job with the censoring, i’m gonna repeat this back to my Mommy (i’m 33 years old)
Dudet trying hard to Dodge/Musk these videos games.
Video suggestion similar to this video: I’ve been replaying Dishonored and (because of your videos) I’ve started to notice the placements of the air ducts in the levels. They have an interesting balance between being placed to look practical for the buildings theyre attached to and being practical for the player to use for parkour/platforming. Sometimes the ducts and AC units have logical placements, sometimes theres just a random duct going to nowhere because you can tell the level designers needed a platform for you to climb up. Might be interesting to look at. Or for a more general idea, something like “what is the state of the industrial revolution in Dishonored?” The in-game technology is pretty neat because they’ve had an industrial revolution using whale oil as fuel, so they have things like electricity (and electrical meters on the walls), air conditioning, and late 19th/early 20th century style tech thats all designed around whale oil, it’s really neat.
With the release of the Oblivion Remaster, will there be a census on Cyrodil’s unemployment?
I liked this video. Ty
Lol, just read a book where they used one of those LNG tanker ships to kill an alien witch.
I like the idea that the scale of the hazard diamond has just changed dramatically. Like they’ve just found chemicals that are WAY more hazardous and flammable that it made methane look like a 1/3/0
Does AnyAustin have a science background? Or just a great generalist researcher of facts? There’s no shortage on YT of “I took videogame world building literally and made a video essay” but I think the use of actual specialist factual knowledge sets these apart (and above).
Fakey industrial design is a personal interest of mine, and I often create illustrations with a whole mess of pipes and vats, so it is kind of heartening that just those sorts of things can be blessed with verisimilitude by audience and creator.
Pleasantly surprised to see Starfield get a video. The game isn’t popular as a video topic on YT, people that hate it make that opinion their entire personality. Nice to see BGS respond to Austin too.
I thought it was hilarious that you said “fuck” then just put in the censor sound after you said it lol I too enjoy small details.
The absence of any obvious storage tanks for oxidizer isn’t necessarily an oversight: Nuclear thermal rockets are a type of rocket engine that uses the waste heat from an onboard nuclear reactor to heat the fuel to combustion instead of a chemical reaction, and thus require no oxidizer. And since every single spaceship in Starfield comes with a built-in fusion reactor, it’s reasonable to suggest that they’d use these engines as well.
“Hit 2023 game”
More like miss 2023 game
“Hit game”
Kekw
9:41 “Industrial Roreshack Test” is going to be the band name I lobby for if I am ever in one with Austin.
What puzzles me about these pipes is how the flanges are held together. They resemble a Victaulic coupling, but there’s no gasket or clamp to secure them. I don’t see any bolt holes or gaskets either, so they might be more like a v-band setup—except there’s no v-band clamp visible. Are the connections so precisely machined that they don’t require any fastening? Also, how is thermal expansion managed across such long pipe runs, especially given the extreme temperature swings on this planet? Great video—your analytical approach and pattern recognition show real engineering insight.
Please never stop making these funky lil videos, they always make me appreciate games in a specific way that makes my brain all tingly 🙂↕️
hit?
I’m just going to say, before even watching the video: absolutely not.
This is the same game with papercup water dispensers in hard vacuum, lived in barracks and shipping crate colonies on HELLWORLDS without airlocks, fucking jimmymcsniperbandit somehow cracking cold ones open to drink through his spacesuit visor.
I continue to be absolutely fucking angy about Starfield’s level/poi ‘designers’ complete lack of understanding OF SPACE AND PHYSICS AND TEMPATURE AND IT’S FUCKING SPACE GODDAMNIT YOU CAN’T JUST HAVE A WATER COOLER IN FUCKIGN VACCUAMGNHA GHAGHGHAGH
the perfect video to watch during my break from studying for a big chem exam….
When you hit a million subs, what if you brought back Eggbusters, but with a twist?
no one does it quite like you, Austin
r u telling me they build things in space but they don’t have wifi pipes
Great work!
“Industrial Rorschach Test” is chef’s kiss
finally shows us his underwear
Seeing the cool little bits of attention to environmental detail like this in Bethesda games in particular always makes me feel… kind of sad, honestly
Because dozens or hundreds of designers put hours upon hours of work into environments, into trying to make all the little parts as accurate (or rather, as verisimilitudinous or plausible) as they could, thinking about their craft and their art and how it fits into the logic of the world……
but ultimately it’s all in service of a world where the people at the top, the people in charge of the story design and overall worldbuilding drop the ball _so badly_ and _so repeatedly_ that it feels like the aggressively lazy/stupid writing undermines the love and care put into aspects of the world design and cheapens it by association.
I have to admit that I’ve not played Starfield (I object to giving Bethesda money), but Fallouts 3 and 4 are fantastic examples of this phenomenon imho – there are genuinely delightful parts in each, where the environment designers have created what _should_ be an immersive little corner of the world, but it only lasts for a moment or two before the story/game mechanics come crashing right back in to remind you that no, actually, this isn’t a cohesive, well-thought-out world, it’s a slapdash mess which the story designer apparently only put about 20 minutes of effort into (assuming they could even be bothered to create a story at all for what they claim is a role playing game, naming no names *cough*76*cough*). In games created by better studios, design like this would complement a cohesive whole, but in bethesda games it just ends up being a jumbled mess of individually kinda pretty parts, strung together by _deeply_ wonky/stupid dialogue and quest writing, which rips me right out of the experience and just leaves me feeling frustrated by the loss of what the game _could_ have so easily been with better writing.
For you see, he lost his fingerprints in an accident, at the cemical factory!
Von karma no!
You should find out if the rivers in Lander WY are real
Now do old world blues content
Seriously, that door is a straight up vulva in the trailer ??
Whatever it is that Game Theory used to do for my ADHD, your channel now does for my autism
Genius? Insane? Nah tism.
I genuinely love how i always learn mostly useless but real things about the world
A video about the uselessness of GTA:Vs street signs would be cool because boy is it a mess.
This one was great per usual
Austism is the best thing to come home to after a long day at work.
Information intended for one in an occupation that I’ll never work in? Yes! This is extremely important, I got dopamine and adrenaline is pumping!
a few months ago, i didn’t know i would love watching… these. nobody knew.
but its so interesting!
love the kraftwerk album cover inclusion
suprised you didnt mention the helium isotope they use for FTL travel in SF
As a pump guy: where are the pumps? How do the substances magically transfer from one place to another?
To be clear I watched this video because I like this channel and the style Austin presents his stuff. I live the Skyrim videos because at one point I really liked most of Bethesdas stuff. Starfield after 100 hours is not such a game so just for the channel I commented.
NOW THIS is the content i need in my life. This guy scratches the itches our soo called leaders wont help with
Could you do a video on Kenshi? Literally anything about it
watching this channel blow up and now include actual developer feedback has been an awesome ride. love your content!
I always wondered what they used for their regular in-system engine power, liquid methane makes sense since it’s one of the most common flammable molecules in the universe besides hydrogen, and is quite easy to collect.
Does anyone know the lore behind the hair clips?
My guy found his golden spot with this video format, so happy for him
I actually really like these videos. Fun stuff, and I loved the emails.
I was already prepared for the test. Sam’onella taught me about the hazard diamond years ago
please… if you do old games at all, I NEED you to take a look at the pipes in Parker sector in Red Faction Guerilla. I spent ages following them and going inside them and trying to figure out what they were for.
On your reasoning about liquid vs. gas pressures: liquids can be stored at ambient pressure if cold enough, on Earth the “boiling point” is the temperature where the vapor pressure is 1 atm. SpaceX is unusual in using subcooled propellants at even lower temperatures to increase density, which is complicated by the fact that the equilibrium pressure is less than 1 atm. Storing any substantial amount as a gas would require high pressure, due to the low density of gases.
And you could use methane alone as propellant in a nuclear engine. It would give less performance than liquid hydrogen but be easier to keep liquid and you could fit more in a given tank volume. It makes no sense to do so with current-tech nuclear engines, since the performance drops so much you may as well just use a chemical engine, but an advanced far future engine…
standards are standards for a reason idiot
Can’t wait until “how fast does paint dry in x game” Will 100% watch
It nice to see the creative thought and care put into parts of the game though it makes the contrast against the relatively bland/lifeless, corporate feeling final product more stark. There are many good parts, its a shame the game was less than the sum of them.
7:35 In the future humans have evolved to take less damage from liquid methane. Increadible worldbuilding
I insulate pipes for work. It’s both neat and weird to see that sort of thing cropping up in a game.
Holy based
awesome video man. you are killing it.
But the starfield ships run on Helium 3
Can Anyone explain why he has those thingys in his hair? Is there a reason or just something he does🥲
Next video: “Where does the climate of Undertale come from?”
02:40 I feel so seen here.
I like your funny mouth words
I love NFPA 704 diamonds!
Thank you for making something that both myself and my teenage son enjoy.
Okay next do a video about the pipes in my autistic brother’s factorio map
8:44 Yeah, the Trade Federation ain’t slick, those starships are about to get back into space
The budget for this game was placed into pipes… and not the story
I’m sure it’s not metan but helium 3 from the dark side of the moon, where the nazis ride dinosaurs and build ufos to take over the world.
In the “Hit” game you mean?
I was always curious if I would sit and watch with rapt attention an AnyAustin video on a pedantic topic if it wasn’t a video game I had ever played and spent dozens and hundreds of hours on.
Turns out? I totally will
As a chemical process engineer, this tickles me in all the right places
hit?
No joke, when your video popped up in my recommended I genuinely couldn’t remember what Starfield was. It had left so little of an impression on me that I had to look it up to remember what it was.
Austin, do you think the same logic applies to Super Mario Bros 3? Is Bowser powering his airships with liquid methane?
You had me at animated diagrams
Now we need a video on the unemployment in oblivion
9:57 cryogenic submerged liquid pump would be inside the tank. Other advantages I’m sure, but you’d put the pump inside the tank to prevent leakages, basically to protect the pump.
I don’t know what’s cooler: That you got emails from Bethesda devs answering your questions, or that their their answers seemed perfectly written for a discussion about the balance between literal accuracy of an environment vs. a sort of aesthetic approximation of one
1:57 SAM O’NELLA PREPARED US FOR THIS ONE
The top tanks may also be holding hydrogen peroxide, an oxidizer that has been used since world war 2 for rocket engines.
I feel so spoiled getting to have such nicely animated diagrams for viewing pleasure :3
Methane is more edible in starfield
Really like how you used this as an opportunity to talk about some art philosophy and questions of authority in answering questions instead of just leaving it at the (also cool) dive into underappreciated details
Thanks for the great video) I’m big fan of Bethesda games, like Fallout 4 (waiting for for any video about it, just saying :D), but dislike Starfield.
But your investigation into pipes was such a joy, that made Starfield for me a little better)))
Which game has the most realistic forklift?
The Me Undies ad spot was hilarious 🤣🤣 definitely wanna buy some now
You make me want to replay games and look at them differently as I go through them again. A new appreciation on perhaps.
You should do a video on Sleeping Dogs’ worldbuilding
Getting a response from Bethesda is legendary
Your comment on pseudo-archaeology makes me want some sort of wild collaboration between you and Miniminuteman. I don’t know what that would look like, but I want it.
11:05 I love that you censored absolutely fucking nothing hahaha
He got the Companion to respond?!
EDIT: Using methane as a traditional fuel would indeed require a lot of O2, but they might be weirdly using it just as hydrogen storage for nuclear fusion? Not sure why you wouldn’t just bring hydrogen in that case, but methane is about 20% hydrogen (by weight) so if you have a nuclear fusion engine you would get quite a lot of energy from it. (And carbon can of course also fuse, albeit at lower efficiency.)
Really good video, loved the fact you reached out and the devs actually responded, it made for some more concrete evidence and gives us glimpse into designs and approaches used to make the game. It’s always nice to see the intent behind certain things or even the ambiguity the devs allow their stories to be interpreted with.
the only thing wrong with this video is saying that starfield is a hit 2023 game
fallout 3 megaton pipes entered the chat
also keep adding shit to your hair until people notice
Hit?
Praying for some oblivion content now that the remaster is out
FYI the NFPA diamond that was inside is next to a standard DOT/TC placard for flammable gas, and 1075 is the UN number for Liquefied Petroleum Gas, i.e. propane.
So sorry you had to spend that much time in this game to give us this beautiful video 🙏
please never stop making these videos
When that envelope came out I gasped. Austin I am SO HAPPY you got this video made. Love your work , blah blah blah xx 😀
God I love this channel. So happy I stumbled upon it one day when I was looking at Fallout 3 stuff on YouTube (where the bombs fell video)
0/10 disappointed no crossover joke between Me-ethane and MeUndies. Could have been joke about pipe
2:38 the whole video its this whole vibe of a very calm, normal, average guy just talking to you about stuff and then i just hear the phrase “dicknballs” dropped and i perished
It’s kind of funny to be reminded that the people making these worlds are really just artists painting a picture, not engineers creating a virtual fuel storage and delivery system. Who knows, maybe those cylinders on top of the methane spheres hold helium3, or maybe an inert gas to dump in the event of a methane leak to prevent an explosion, or maybe it’s water to replenish ship stores, it doesn’t really matter because it’s just a cylinder tank, it’s whatever you want it to be, or whatever you think it is.
Insane.
As someone who works in industry, with big pipes. They make enough sense. Our place wasnt properly labeled untill about 7 years ago. And OSHA doesnt seem to be everywhere in starfield. EX marks(flamable/explosive) are usually marked everyhwere though. But that doesnt mean it happens in space. If its marked; EVERY SINGLE LIL THING WILL BE MARKED. You need special pipes, pumps, switches, lamps etc. Its a requirement nightmare whenever its something explosive/flamable
Also cylinders are good enough. You dont need perfect spheres for pressure. Like the 8 GW(yes gigawatt) boiler we had. It was cylindrical, not spherical.
The exit signs is just sensible too. Its not an american standard. And the visibility demands of em differs between countries.
The processing of the gas wouldnt be at the place where its used on earth. This in the future, so the rules/technology could be different. Also the insulation, youre right. Insulation defends against temperature changes. So their design idea may not be accurate. But their excecution is. And so is yours
This is a great video. Cause they paid a good amount of attention to sensible parts of it. And you did a lot of good work on it
This game was still AI slop
uhhh
It just works
S tier content, thank you for your work
wish i could give more than one like. wish i could like specific sections of the video, along with giving the video in general one big ol like. this video is insanely cool and thank you for always reminding me to spend time with the intricate and mundane. <3.
you were right, i was very excited to learn how to read the hazard diamond runes
i cant tell if the failed censoring of “all over the fucken place” was intentional or not for the bit
Great video! I love your unique perspective and thinking outside of the box. I would have stopped when I discovered the liquid was methane, but you just dove deeper and asked great questions.
Well that explain some pipes… but what about the other 25 pipes next to them?
I love your attention to detail. I wish more people were like that. there would be less accidents, deaths, and heartbreak for people and savings in industrial costs. Good stuff, brother!
In Germany we often burry tanks for savety reason look up Leverkusen chempark explosion, there was an accident that would have been a lot a lot worse if the hydrogen(I belive) tank right next to the accident wasn’t buried
At 7:50 that other diamond labeled 1075 is a DOT hazmat placard (not the official name), the number is called the UN, 1075 denotes what’s in the container (when the placard is on a container, or tanker). Iirc they’re used internationally, so 1075 in the US is 1075 outside of the US. If youbsee a vehicle with a diamond, there’s usually a symbol (or pattern) on the same placard that should give you a quick understanding of the type of danger, and the number will tell you the specific chemical (or type of chemical) that’s inside! So that placard showing a lil flame is accurate as UN 1075 is Liquified Petroleum Gas.
A fun road trip activity is logging all the different UNs you see and looking them up with a friend, or when you’re done driving, to see all the different things you’ve different past.
If you see a vehicle with a placard that denotes a hazard class, but no number, it usually means there isn’t a lot on the vehicle (I believe it’s based off the weight of the hazmat you’re carrying). They still need to indicate it’s there but there just isn’t a whole lot of it.
Also I think you attempted to censor a swear and it missed the mark unfortunately.
i would love an Any Austin video on Elden Ring!
Is it possible to reach this level of unemployed naturally?
We still use the wheel as a primary component of locomotion on most vehicles, and that was invented around 6000 years ago.
…And we still hit stuff with sticks.
Humans don’t really change that much, we can assume we’ll still be using yellow hazard stripes to indicate flammable liquids.
10:00 elevation can play a major role in refinement of a substance because of atmospheric pressure. Substances can change states easier with more or less pressure. Elevating a tank is an incredibly cheap way to assist an operation.
The ships use He-3 as fuel for the reactors. The reactors drive the thrusters and grav drives. The methane could be used for heating the habitats, and cooking. Or, that’s what they mine on Gagarin, and ships it off somewhere else maybe.
My condolences to your brain for trying to figure out logic in Bethesda’s world design.
You somehow managed to take to the next level those kinds of videos you watch at 3am when you can’t sleep.
I wonder if game devs watch these videos and go back to fix stuff like the little colored diamonds in updates. I would do it. Dont see, they wouldn’t do it. Could make a little social media post about. Get some cheap press.
Hit video game?
“I’am the king of pipes!!!” -Bethesda, 2023
I like hearing you talk but what’s starfield?
5:40 is such a bombshell to just drop and move on from. 😂
i love you
11:04 the beep at the wrong time really seem gets the joke done. That’s why I watch this guy
Midway through this video I said to myself “This video is about deductive reasoning.” so it was awesome to hear you refer to your own detective work.
Saturday is my favorite day
World design was one of the high points of Starfield so I’m glad you got to talk to Gravano and Rafaello
Tbh I had a feeling we’d be learning about the diamonds with numbers in them
“Probably like 40 Celsius” lol now they can’t complain.
Unfortunately it hasn’t come to PlayStation so no one’s played it!
As a former engineering designer, I’m always interested in these kinds of structures in games and how authentic they feel. They are ‘artists impressions’ so I don’t expect an actual functioning plant, but I appreciate the effort these fellows put into actually thinking about what things do to make it feel convincing.
super cool
The ship’s canonically use helium 3 for the grav jump and with nothing else it’s safe to assume that the reactors use it too
Speaking of pipes, just noticed it’s your music and hit that subscribe button faster than a Starfield loading screen.
now do Prey 2006
what type of autism do you have?
Yes.
More Starfield videos please
I searched your google history btw
Good to see you continuing your mission to cultivate the first-ever subscriber community composed entirely of civil engineers.
9:52 The stray hand coming into frame is a top-tier editing choice.
This makes me want to load into Modern Warfare’s oil rig map and analyze it now
Good video
I don’t know how to describe this core but it’s cozy af.
Listening to this in the background, 12:54 comes around “and then get those people to do a fact check on all of my theories” followed by a long pause, then continued with “…..FA-BREEZE” fucked me up. GREAT ad timing, YouTube.
Where are the pressure safety and thermal relief valves?!
science
You’re really leaning into the pointing slightly upward in the thumbnails. honestly probably a good algorithm strategy
As a chemical engineer who had to design some petroleum product processing and storage facilities as part of his university degree, I would like to say that you did an excellent job of describing things. There were a few places where I would have used a more specific term to describe something — like changing “conditioning tanks” to “distillation columns” or perhaps just “separator vessels” — but the terms you used were still descriptively accurate and understandable. Well done!
I LOVE how in your videos you combine dry humour with a joy in the mundane (or in the unnoticed) and use it to model important lessons on critical thinking to your audience. Whether that be what the process of actually doing research is (I adored your citation deep dive into birds) or whether it is how conspiratorial thinking develops. I am SO pleased that the algorithm first showed me your video about river-water-flow in Skyrim!
I like the idea that in the future in the starfield world all ships run off of liquid fart stank
The delayed beep at 11:04 made me laugh out so damn loud. I really hope that was intentional and not an editing mistake.
Saw this, went on to another video that turned out to be so boring that I literally thought “I’d rather be learning about pipes.”
Huge pipes and underwear sponsorship? Yes please.
if you want my personal take as a small artist, it is unreasonable, if not impossible, to expect an artist to accurately represent all things in their game worlds. Which is why the dev response was not at all surprising to me. “I saw these as” or “i like you interpretation”. Even if an artist knew what every pipe did they are still going to stop as soon as its obstructed by the ground. They arent engineers, they play aesthetics first. Not that there isnt any room to balance logic though.
In order to accurately portray gun, for example, you almost have to know exactly what every part of it does. You can only feign knowledge so much before some gun nut comes along and tells you the mag is wrong, or the animation is wrong, or some detail doesn’t make any sense. I could probably copy a gun 1 to 1, (with sufficient reference) but dont ask me to fabricate a new weapon without making some errors. There is only so much i can look up before i give up, even though i want to make logical things, i only have so much stamina to research, im otherwise uninterested in the topic.
Some things are just way more scrutinized than others. Propbably why my teacher told me that if you wanted to model guns (or cars) in your portfolio, you should probably also be a gun nut. Then he went and assigned us a gun as a 3d exercise.
Its honestly crazy how specialized a 3d artist can get in a videogame studio. I know someone who just about only makes buildings.
What is the hazard placard on the environmental cannon? Sounds dangerous.
340……
I find it hard to state just how glad I am this video exists
Nice
I’m just going to put out there (though this is a bit of a nitpick that doesn’t aim to take away from the video as a whole) that the Fire Diamond being 1-3-0 instead of 3-4-0 is not “remotely close” to being correct. Remember that the scales only being from 0-4 means each jump is incredibly large, as you need to cover all possible contents. So for the Health section (the first number when typed out) a 0 means perfectly safe, you know like water, air, wood, etc. Things you interact with on a daily basis. But a 4 is hydrofluoric acid, sarin, and mustard gas. Things you can not interact with, because they will kill you until you die… to death. So it being a 1 instead of a 3 means it is VERY different from Methane.
To further emphasize the difference between a 1 and 3 in this instance: Acetone is a 1. Acetone if it gets on your skin or eyes in a large amount can cause irritation, but is incredibly unlikely to do any notable damage at all unless you are unrealistically irresponsible with it. You can even ingest it in small dilute amounts and be fine. An example of a 3 however is Sulfuric Acid. Sulfuric acid can cause series chemical burns and other injuries if in contact with your skin and not immediately washed off, and it should not take me to tell you that drinking Sulfuric Acid is extraordinarily incompatible with living. Another example of a 3 is Cardon Monoxide, so I’ll take this time to say make sure your Carbon Monoxide detector is up to date and functioning, it can and will save lives.
All that is to say, while 1 and 3 sound like they are close, they are in reality to very different extremes that are not “remotely close”, make sure if you are ever in the presence of something with a 3 on it you do not mistake it as being kinda like a 1. And if you read all this and are curious what the Fire Diamond image could actually be referencing, well a lot of things could be 1-3-0, but I’d put my money on this one warning us of Octane. That is to say: this is the Fire Diamond you’d be most likely to see at a gas station. The developers probably thought “these are for like, fuel or something” and then just googled “gasoline warning label” and stuck it on. Not a problem obviously, no one really expects them to consider what the fuel would be and then try to find the accurate symbol, that would be a ridiculous expectation.
1:59 finally my degree in the prestigious Sam O’Nella Academy will be of use!
I hope other people liked your joke at 3:47 as much as I did
oh man please tell me we’re gonna see like an hour long video just going thru all of the unique and desolate places in this game
I really appreciate that the designers took time out of their busy days to respond to random questions about an overlooked and unappreciated detail in their game. It’s heartening. 😊
7:53 The DOT placard in the doctors office is 1075 indicating LP gas (propane) why does the doctor need propane?
Thanks for the Celcius conversion.
“hit”
This video makes my chemical engineer brain very happy!
lol the beep didn’t even touch the swear
kraftwerk!!!
I have never been more excited to review the NFPA labeling system than I am having loaded this video
I am a hazmat technician, and I got so happy when you explained the NFPA 704 label.
11 05……. Great work on the bleeping.
any_austin, I hate to inform you, but your F-word is not bleeped quite right at 11:06 lol
Nitpicking aside, thank you for all your hard work nitpicking video games!
So we have a word for the tendency to see human faces (and other things) in random things: pareidolia.
I think you’ve earned a word to describe the tendency to see meaningful purposes in science fiction greebling. Maybe a wordsmith out there can help us out…
I see London, I see France…
My fucking god. The excitement I’m feeling at being a chemist in grad school and the first thing I see is methane and knowing that Austin is wont to call upon ‘experts’ in the field in the comments. Absolutely salivating at the prospects.
The original Dungeon Siege is a rather obscure game. Nonetheless, it is one of my old favorites. How would you feel about doing an Unemployment Survey of the various towns and cities in that game?
I’d love to see a cyberpunk video but idk what the topic would be
This vid is the most relevant Starfield has been since its launch 😂
0:04 wtf it’s been 2 years since Starfield released.
Wtf.
Starslop
Cool video but still doesnt change the fact that this game is not very good.
Austin please do videos about the Oblivion remaster!!! (Also I love that you got in touch with the devs in this video :))
i am in love with how you think. please do some building in creative minecraft i promise everyone including you will enjoy it very much
16:30 they made our boi read out an entire legal disclaimer from hell. Bethesda why do you make it so hard to lo… nah, scratch that… like you? Not only is it horribly generic and incredibly common, viewers do get the concept of level design and that it’s not reality because, you know, we are supposed to be in a game in space.
14:00 yeah, so I’m pretty sure that job security at Bethesda (aka, a tiny, tiny sub of papa MSFT) is not fantastic right now. Devoting resources to generate positive social media buzz is an exceptionally good use of their time. TES6 isn’t coming to save their jobs any time soon. Best they can hope for is an uptick in legacy product sales. Every bit of extra revenue helps.
Great music at the end, so groovy!
11:00 I really wish that watching a video by someone who has already done the thinking made me smarter… ok, as you were…
0:02 it was a hit alright, won steam’s most innovative gameplay of the year it did. Mega hit.
Hit 2023 videogame Starfield
John and Rafael: Layin’ Pipe.
me 15 seconds in: he’s really into this one
(locks tf in listening)
Starfield was not a “hit”.
Unlabelled pipes? (OSHA disliked that) maybe a future video of video game safety violations?
32 times the detail?
I finally realized Austin says œther
Austin I need a video about the fire alarm systems in video games
I think its admirable when scifi sticks to tried and true systems in their futuristic settings. You can speculate wildly about culture/politics/aliens but mechanically the universe will not have changed. So, it’s kind of a waste to think of a better Exit sign.
I LOVE how you cover the infrastructure and logistics of modern games, its incredibly satisfying and actually quite touching to see so much passion and love put into something meant to entertain. I dont have the most love for Starfield for numerous reasons but there are subtleties like these specifics that make me really love the game. I at least love the devs and know truly how hard theyve worked on this game. and i hope it CONTINUES to be this good moving forward with Bethesda because theyve had a rocky existence with some of their games.
I forgot this game released, maybe because its forgettable slop
0:10 I know right? So many ppl have mentioned or at least thought about the 37 pipes… wait… wtf are we doing in this video?! Is this what Stockholm syndrome feels like?
Lmao the beep coming after the word
I thought the fuel in starfield was supposed to be helium
I love these videos by Any Austin because they show and prove the amount of effort that was put into these games via the collaborative efforts of the dev team. It really helps appreciate the work that was put in and highlight the amount of detail in games that, in Starfield’s case, may be seen as a quick cashgrab
6:30 Normally with these videos I have a shred of background, this is so cool! Such a deep dive in!
“Hit 2023 video game Starfield”
there’s only one person on the planet that can get me excited for rivers and pipe systems
Another fun fact: when looking at the other places their stock hazard diamond was. The wall it was on had the UN Number diamond for liquefied Petroleum Gases. Meaning they still used the 2025 UN numbering system for hazardous materials. And just reused the Gas NFPA hazard sign for everything lol 😅
5:50 It makes sense to me that the same general color standards would be in place – as new generations are put in charge its easiest for them to use the sam symbolic language that they’ve been trained on, making general things like this surprisingly durable cultural artefacts
the last podcast:
mem: you’re mostly family friendly except for the once every occasional video you say d*ck and b*lls
austin, having already filmed this video: 😐
Genius, Insane, one in the same!
Literally nobody cares. Dead content.
This channel reminds of old Game Theory. Glad I stumbled on your channel
Great content, genuinely. You make wonderful stuff. Thank you, Austin.
And big thanks to you! This is fantastic! Your videos are breathe of fresh air. I’ve been in love with Destiny’s world for a while now, and love the detail put into it. (I’d recommend checking it out, but it’s kinda hard to get into.) That love comes across in your videos, random details, over analysis; I love it! Now you have the vision of the actual devs!? Awesome, keep it up!
Did you ever think you’d be showing off your undies online for money ? Life’s a trip.
Btw, about the routine of npcs , i’m sure you love majoras mask
I was under the impression that the starship fuel was something called helium-3, I haven’t played starfield in ages though, so I could be completely wrong. The methane could just be a export good though.
i’d love to see this kind of breakdown for anything in armored core VI. so much industrial infrastructure in that game. it’d be a bit harder to get footage though…
That was surprisingly endearing, and I’m all for it. I’ve never been so interested in digital methane distribution methods before.
prime 4 vigina doors
“hit game” ha, good one.
This video was probably more interesting than the game it’s self. Too bad it’s not enough to make me wanna play it again.
This is the content we deserve
This is why I subscribe to this channel.
Loved the brief responses from the devs, they with your commentary on the topic of balance and sweetspot for gaming environments explicate in a compelling way such a pervasive element of games
Hey man, I haven’t even watched the video yet, but if you need a SME on this topic like your video on joinery in skyrim or whatever, hit me up. I’m a union steamfitter. I do pipes professionally. I will be savoring this video later tho.
That’s cool but the pipes in Armored Core 6 are longer and bigger 😏
Can’t wait for the Oblivion remastered video
i’m not sure how i feel about meundies accepting returns for refunds… are they collecting dna? sniffing the shorts? burning them in generators to fuel the machines that the sweatshops use to make the undies? all of the above?
probably not at all any of those, but imagine accepting used underwear in a return
AUSTIN, DUDE 👏👏👏
This video is grade A. Thank you for putting in the real work and not just saying “that’s good enough” and posting it
I love our mystery solving time. You definitely are a genius!
LETS GOOO
It looks like my satisfactory base lmo.
Better, actually, because everything is at least neat and managed.
hey austin i’m a research scientist and i am 100% going to steal the analogy of the first clue in an investigation being like finding the corner piece of a puzzle when i teach students how to approach a scientific question
hey its blue sky austin!
❤❤❤
man fuck this game
chat is this game any good?
the methane thing is neat but starfield ships run on helium-3, except they don’t, because that mechanic was cut, so they’re pretty much powered by narrative
on the topic of standards surviving way into the future, we actually have examples of that today! Iirc railways are spaced the way they are because of ancient roman horse carriage standards
But do the undies pass the 10 year quality test?
I adore these creative topics you come up with. So many interesting video topic that I didn’t know I wanted to watch!
I do really like Starfield form doing all the fuller questlines. A lot of the designs from here to the plethora of things you can pick up and look at are really what made me appreciate it. Definitely could have been more but it has its moments.
You never go back there ever
it like the start of every mass effect
WHOA that thumbnail
Bethesda really knows how to lay pipe.
Yeahhhh mentioning that a tank is accurate while seeing a ball valve on top of a tank thats not accessible or supported in anyways is an easy sign this doesnt conform to normal pipe design
16:55 the selling point that Todd was pushing was that it all was “hand crafted” so the packins thing kinda takes a bit away from that
hell yeah brother
Fine, man
I’ll but the underwear
I may not like Bethesda because of their fuck ups but those emails prove there are great people there. And it seems John and Rafael love their job. Being able to remember these objects after they have done so much work.
reminds me of the one moorover vid where he goes insane over the diamond thing
i love the delayed censor when you curse
The methane is probably being used as fusion fuel rather than for combustion, hence why there isn’t any LOX.
Hydrogen would be ideal but its notoriously hard to store and methane has double the specific hydrogen content of water
12:41 16x the detail, perhaps?
I work on aircraft fuel systems and pumps for all of our tanks are internal to the tank, I don’t know much about the storage tanks in this video but I would think they use a similar system
Really awesome that you went the extra mile to ask developers. This channel is special.
Been waiting for this video
What’s up with the hair clips? I’ve seen almost all his videos and I still don’t know.
I think it’s funny that Starfield was widely criticized for recycling assets and repetitive level design, and after closer inspection and a reply by the designers, confirmed that indeed half of it had no discernable purpose and they reused these assets all over the place.
Enjoy Video Games! That doesn’t get said enough. This is a medium entirely created for fun and leisure. Sometimes I forget that.
Vapor Recovery Units collect the vapors created during the fueling of trucks (the air in the tank that is displaced by fuel cannot be vented to atmosphere legally) and cycles it through a “shower” that sprays liquid over chilled gasses. During this time the liquid “catches” the gas, and the liquid is pumped into a tank that contains products that will be blended into gasoline at a very low percentage.
Those tanks aren’t VRUs, sorry. Email John Zink next with pictures and see what they say, lol.
Almost all hospitals store liquid oxygen under high pressure in cylindrical tanks. Even very large bulk tanks(often you can see them in a fenced in area near the building). I know because I have piped them into hospitals – med-gas certified journeyman plumber/refrigeration technician
The cylinder is more likely to be gaseous methane, you wouldn’t store highly reactive pure oxygen right on top of a tank of fuel.
hey i literally just got starfield yesterday.
Haven’t played the game, but as you mentioned is great when artistic interpretation meets realism (paraphrasing).
There’s one way to say it: I love this shit
“Hit”
I was really hoping the email reply to be:
“It’s from the asset store; that’s just how it looked when we dropped the prefab in….”
Oblivion Remaster is next
is starfield a ‘hit’?
yes.
any_austin and MeUndies; name a better combo, I’ll wait
Man I legit forgot about this game and the 40hrs of my life I wasted on it until now
I actually really like the idea that certain things 100 years in the future just never got updated. Imagine finding out we perfected chemical storage in 2015 and little to nothing has changed even in the Mass Effect era of space travel
fallout 4’s electrical system( power lines) I’m am electrician by trade I could follow them myself. It’s always better to watch someone else do the work… comes with the trade
4:35 or let me take a guess, WATER. For RCS thusters.
Babe, quick, leave work, new AnyAustin just dropped
Hit game? The fuck?
Interesting… 🤔
Haha spaceship run on fart
Fun fact: If you were to jump in a methane lake on Titan for a little swimming, you’d sink and never be able to surface. It’s because liquid methane isn’t anywhere near as dense as water.
Starfield is shit though
i can only hope that these 2 people were head over heels over his austins email, cause lets be honest, no person with a “normal” mind would write bethesda/designer on pipes, ideas, infrastructure etc. to get someone who is interested in your thought process, who appreacites all that stuff you do, must be the best thing.
water molecules depicted at 0:51, analysis discarded (jk)
I was disappointed with Starfield, but it’s good to see you finding your own fun in it and hearing from the people who put the work into making it.
this video honestly makes me appreciate the little details in games like Starfield.
The only bad thing I have to say about this vid this time was it was way to !$#$$@ short.
The Kraftwerk reference at 11:00 makes me happy.
So this video can only mean one thing:
Oblivion Remaster woodworking video
Mmmm the dimond of tasty
Why are we talking about Starfield?
I enjoyed watching Any Austin talks about pipes in Starfield more than me playing it
“methane” is a word that sounds like it would be involved in spacecraft, and the developers are vaguely aware that tanks and pipes are used with methane in some way. that’s it.
I seriously think you were the biggest influence on why I know love learning. Thank you, Austin, seriously.
1:56 Sam O’Nella Academy prepared me for this moment.
Thank you, I needed to know this
I thought Helium 3 was Starfields Fuel euqivalent. It’s very prominent in the rather unrefined Settlement feature, where it is reauired for generators and refueling cargo links.
1:29 Or hydrogen or Helium for fusion.
Calling starfield a “Hit” is generous
this is one of the most pointless vidoes on youtube. like WHO THE FUCK CARES ABOUT ANY OF THIS
16:05 thats exactly what the red bar on those videos look like for me, what is this witchcraft
Video idea: “Corridors in Valve games.”
I wouldn’t call it a hit game, I’d call it a rock thrown at a barn
11:57 Sir… you are an insane genius!
pulling out the printed mail was wild.
New Starfield lore – they can somewhat safely drink methane.
i really wish my computer could run this game 🥲
The hazard diamond segment just gave me trauma flashbacks from MooreOver’s Apex Legends video
Pipe this, pipes that. Why don’t you just pipe down.
I really love the correspondence with the designers! So wholesome and breaking the wall between devs and players, that’s *chef kiss*
You think they put thought into Starfield?
Love that you got in touch with the Devs ❤🎉
Any, theres a lot of shit you say that I’ll take at face value.
Im gonna need a source on Shartfield being a hit
I can only imagine the intense nerd high you got whenever the Bethesda employees confirmed your theories.
Thanks to you I started looking for stuff in most of the games I play, like for example I am always on the look out for a spot that looks like it could be a small closed off cozy place to nap before continuing on your adventure, or places that just exist inside or around areas of fast paced action, palces where maybe little critters or an entire ecosystem of its own just exists while everything else happens around them! I’ve found many of those places in both modern God of War games, and also Monter Honter Wilds and World before that, so thanks pal!
Oh Austin boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling…
Super insightful, loved this video! Keep up the great work!
Ive been here since eggbusters…it makes me so happy to see this channel thrive.
As for the pump: you can induce flow in the system by pressurizing the initial storage tank. The pressure can be seen as “potential energy” which can push the methane through the system
You got me with the Exit Signs. XD
Oxidizer is in the methane already. Makes it less useable/flammable, but also decreases health risk as a result. I haVe solved the sign numnbers.
You’re so silly
This is part of why I loved Starfield as much as I did. There’s so much of the greasy engineering gubbins in the game that, if not accurate, are at least *plausible*.
Despite the well deserved criticism, I could still get lost in the details on ships and structures and nerd out.
The drives use He3 on the space ships, but I would imagine they could also use methane for other functions. Gregaran used to be a huge manufacturing hub during the colony wars, so a lot of that methane was used to power the machinery too. I was considering adding a huge factory there as a mod, if I can find the time & inspiration. I bet its flowing the other direction too, from the ships, into the giant storage tank.
0:58: “Spoiler alert: Animated Diagrams” (of pipes)
Austin as always knows what gets the ladies wet
When Austin makes an indepth analysis of minute details no sane person would notice from a game I never played, I hit the like button.
I worked at a hospital in college. They had several huge, two-story oxygen tanks that fed into each room. The tanks were always flowing, and as such, were always _cooling down_. The outlet pipes were always covered in frost, like the inside of a freezer.
If you’ve ever used the Creation Kit, you can see just how modular the packins are for yourself!
dont need to watch this vid to know they dont make sense
You inherently know something i missed in the game that i didn’t want to ❤❤❤
0:03 Hit? I don’t know about that description boss 🤔
Mario
Thats all
10:07 They use heaters for cryogenics, not pumps. If you contain something that boils at below at -200F, its going to be constantly creating pressure. The pressure in the tank has to build above the liquid, so if your outlet for the liquid is below that, the rising pressure forces the liquid out of the vessel.
I love your ideas
Given that the game is Starfield, the methane is just lucky it doesn’t have a loading screen before each tank transfer.
The content of these pipes is as real as this game having been a “hit” game.
Though if the contents WERE real, it would probably be something similar to what this game actually is.
my favorite part about this video is that i farted when he revealed the methane tank. Well done.
edit: turns out I shit myself, but luckily it was right when he announced this video’s sponsor: MeUndies. You’ve done it again, Austin.
Say what you want about starfield, it looks very detailed, hands down.
Does starfield make any sense
I’m not a Starfield fan, but I feel ya on games that are by no means perfect having a certain something that just makes you like it a ton. I feel that way about Thief2014. By no means perfect but I like the architecture and navigating the City a lot. I like theorizing what could be inside the buildings I can’t enter and who lives in the buildings I can. I like the side details of a house with a hidden butchery that implies the person living there is a cannibal, I like that a side mission for some look becomes you discovering the house is owned by an absolutely terrible father who obsesses over his daughter and you get to rob him blind because eff that guy. For what the devs DID manage to stuff in there, both outside and within the main story, I quite like it for what it is. It’s just a shame that certain facts weren’t communicated super well and I understand fans of the original trilogy would be upset but this was the first game in the series I played, and having played the trilogy I’m sorry, but I still love it a lot :’)
I know its a little thing but i really appreciate you saying ‘people with a [beep] and [beep]’ instead of just ‘man’ in the sponsorship bit
Any Austin is over here consistently delivering totally new ways to enjoy video games.
Good, Any Austin uploaded. Time for my bi-weekly shower while I listen to it.
You got my sub because you explained the colored squares.
For civilian applications, if your ship uses methane, you are stupid. Use hho instead, it has the highest energy density of any combustible fluids, burns into water and, is super easy to obtain. Don’t use it in combat tho, highly, highly explosive in the “holy shit Jared just burnt to a crisp and we can’t even see the fire”
As a code nerd, i love the NFPA mention
It must’ve been weird for Bugthesda PR to find a positive email from a customer in their inbox. 😂
Don’t get me wrong, a lot of talented people work for that company. Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter how talented your staff is when they’re only allowed to show off that talent on design choices & gameplay mechanics that are approved by leadership…. 😮💨 Welp. I’m outta here. I don’t have the time to respond to Bugthesda simps who will attack me for wanting a massive successful studio to actually raise the bar for their products over time.
Planet Gagarin as in well-known intrepid cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin??
i’m going to learn more than that in the video but there’s something wonderful about digital memorials to real ppl, such as this
The plumber in me is so hyped for this video
“… In the hit 2023 game, Starfield–” I’m going to over-look the misinformation this statement in order to fully enjoy the video.
I’ve been soo exited for this!!!
Pre-watch comment response to the title: This is a game by Bugthesda, so probably not.
I was really excited to write a comment about how the flammability rating of methane could be lower on this planet if their atmosphere has a lower concentration of O2 for the fuel to react with. Then you showed footage a bunch of folks standing around just breathing the air, and I realized no, you’re right, they probably just used that 1 texture for everything lol
part of me died inside when you said 2023 game starfield how can it have been that long already
It’s legitimately awesome that you got to talk to the actual people who developed this area. It’s cool to see their thought processes.
Seeing them say “I actually thought of it more as…” it reminds me of Bob Ross, when he’s like “I think we’ll put a little tree here. And why not a little bush…”
We rarely get to see the perspective of level designers/artists so this was really cool to see.
There is no reason that high pressure has to be in spherical tanks, I understand your reasoning but it doesnt not have to be if they are simply strong enough.
I hope Bethesda give Austin a voice cameo in a game at some point
Does anything in Starefield make sense? No.
Not even the act of purchasing this “game” makes sense. If you want games & players that make sense, you gotta get away from Bugthesda products entirely 😂
omg love that video
1:10 If that’s liquid methane, then it’s a cryogenic. If it’s cryogenic, then those tubes have to be vacuum jacketed, meaning there is a smaller pipe in that pipe and them a vacuum in between them (which makes the bend even more complicated)
you are going to be a trendsetter with those hair clips
Makes one wonder what the 1-3-0 diamond was intended to label.
“Ultimately, this is a video game. It’s nice if it makes sense from a real-world viewpoint, but it needs to serve the function of being in a video game first and foremost. Unlike in real life, where getting it wrong can be disastrous.”
you madlad
Then replying is so nice and such a cool touch to the video, I loved it so much. Also makes me wonder if you have ever asked other studios
11:37 pumps don’t actually have to be at the start of a fluid system. They can pull fluids just as they can push them. The pump for the methane can be located out of view in any of the underground sections.
I think the top tanks hold Hydrazine
Thank you for your service.
Pretty sure Starfield ships use helium-3, and not methane, for fuel.
I spent more time watching this than I did playing Starfield
Who cares its starfield
I can’t wait for the inevitable Oblivion remastered vids
Is there a gas that does have a 1-3-0 rating?
Austin, your videos are an instant click for me when you post. I think this is one of your best videos yet!
I can only dream of one day receiving an email from someone noticing smalle details in my work.🥰
And have nightmares about reciting a court date because someone got hurt. 😱
FUN FACT
The colours of the diamond authority in Steven Universe are based off of under NFPA diamond!
Or maybe methane is just more hazardous to your health in the future
Yeaahhhhhh
7:23 I like this sus chord vamp! Kinda bill wurtzy!
That exit sign joke got a proper laugh out of me. That’s why I love this channel
I REALLY like how you addressed the fact that just because you found things that look true and fit together to make a compelling narrative, that doesn’t mean you’re right. In this age of information I see a lot of people make the logical leap that just because something makes sense and is based on a some known facts, it must be true, and I believe it’s a huge contribution to the ongoing scientific illiteracy problem in healthcare, climate science, and other major fields.
It would be cool to see a video about the crazy megastructures in Armored Core 6
“hit video game”? nah
I detest Bethesda for (try) selling the same games over and over again. But I like that there are still some people that like their job at there.
90% of the things in Starfield don’t make sense
‘hit’ video game is debatable
15:10 Reminds me how Tolkien would often answer lore questions about Middle Earth.
The pseudoarcheology comment got me wondering if these games drove Austin googledebunkers
Definitely not 😂
your content is so random but so interesting to watch, please never stop making these.
how are you doing this. did you clone yourself. seriously how do you make videos so quick man? it’s like you saw quality or quantity and said ‘yes’
Bethesda Can hardly be bothered to animate a main characters face and you think they thought about the pipes!? I’m anxious to see XD
@0:03 Was it really a hit, though???
With all those pipes, you’d think you’d run out of oxygen less.
I’m playing the Oblivion remaster while watching this. Just came across a dresser that opens towards the bed… literally unplayable now. How could Todd not personally come and re-arrange the furniture in the mages’ guild bunkhouse?!
Kidding, it’s been amazing so far.
Seems like more care was put into detailing that than the rest of the game….
I fell off of Starfield after a little while and I’m not sure when/if I’ll get back to it (it was the companions that did it for me), but I always felt like it was a great achievement technically from the artists and the programmers. It was only most of the writing that I couldn’t get fully into…
So, they have the liquid fuel, but if i know anything about rockets they also need an oxidiser. So where’s the big liquid oxygen tank?
why man always have hairclips
kraftwerk mentioned!!!!
That was so cool with the letter from the devs! I almost skipped this video because I hadn’t played the game but I’m glad I didn’t. Very cool!
Honestly I think this is one of your best videos yet.
Okay my curiosity is making me ask. What pattern/shape is on your kippah?
Pipeline safety inspector here. Liquid methane does not have to be kept under high pressures. Liquified natural gas (LNG) plants typically store LNG at atmospheric pressure. Instead of high pressure, the LNG is just kept very cold (-260 F). The storage itself is basically a giant tub filled with LNG suspended from a big insulating cover.
fire diamonds, pog.
Thanks now this info is in my brain. Had to delete calculus but wasn’t using that anyway.
Nice one! My favorite series on YouTube at the moment
They just work
fun fact: if you see the NFPA four diamond sticker with only three out of four diamonds, that means it’s from era 2, after pink diamond was shattered
Now put that in your pipe … And do semi complex lengthy analytics about it
Austin just can’t get enough of finding obscure details in games and following them back to their source
I feel like videos are excuses for you to make animated diagrams, keep them coming
I’m so glad you got some game developer responses to how these environments are made.
ref
Do star citizen
I learn the most random and interesting stuff watching this channel. I love it.
You mentioned pseudo-archeology and now I really wish to see you do a video debunking some pseudo-science. I imagined it would be quite fun to see you collab with someone who already does that, like Miniminuteman. But it would also be fun if you did it alone.
So glad you’ve turned attention to Starfield!
you could build a whole channel doing this sort of thing with rain world. a task that could drive a man completely insane.
I never noticed the pipes I was busy looking at all the doors. 🤯
I never thought I’d be so invested in the pipe design of a game I’ve never played.
🐐
You should do a video on the massive volcano in Skyrim. The one Windhelm is inside.
“in the hit 2023 videogame Starfield” the only way the “hit” is accurate is if it refers to Bethesda hitting rock bottom with it
absolute banger
0:53. …They’re all going to contain methane, aren’t they?
Wait… don’t the ships in Starfield use Helium3 as fuel to fly the ships?
We’re just gonna gloss over the Google search for “prime 4 vagina doors”?
cyberpunk has inconsistent architectures
Internal pump, like in a car’s fuel tank. A fuel pump is submerged in the fuel tank to send fuel to the engine.
Austin, I just wanna say that as I put together levels for my silly little games, I watch your videos a lot. They get me really pumped about level design.
its awesome that people making this stuff took the time to anwer your questions!! and that you were right on multiple points!and i just know that someone paying attention to their details made their day❤
I honestly imagine the designers are actually really happy you messaged them about the methane tanks. These are people who put thought and effort into what they made, and they almost certainly appreciate the fact that someone cares about what to most would be irrelevant details.
eh it’s like rainworld you just stick pipes everywhere for aesthetics
Here’s a crazy idea:
Perhaps the main storage tank is filled regularly to crazy high pressures, then they wouldn’t need a pump. That’s how our LN2 system at work is: we have main storage that is high volume and high pressure, and we fill smaller tanks solely via the pressure to distribute the LN2 as needed.
Also on the final screen: Minneapolis has two Ns 😉
Love your videos!!!
Considering how the guns are put together and animated I’m going to guess no
5:06 “prime 4 vagina doors”
11:57
This is the point on every one of your videos where i start tuning way in and rewatch parts lol. I love this niche of your videos.
Also the ending track slaps again, nice job!
You really gotta appreciate the art and craftsmanship that goes into monetizing bullying level designers for being lazy with their world building.
The ships are actually fueled by Helium 3. So the tanks near the landing pad are most likely filled with Helium 3.
Is there possibly a way to make one of these videos about anything in the outer worlds? I don’t know about what but it would be cool.
Anyway, nice video as always. 👍
been so pumped to watch you walk around puzzled at Starfield
Thanks for giving at least a rough reference in Celsius this time. I appreciate it.
4:06 “My initial thought was that maybe these top tanks contain liquid oxygen…”
Storing a tank of liquid oxygen directly on top of a tank of liquid methane would probably get you killed. Not by the catastrophic explosion when something inevitably fails, but by a Health & Safety worker unaliving you in your sleep.
My doctors office also has a hazard diamond rating of 1 for how toxic it is to interact with, 3 for how flammable it is, and 0 for how stable it is.
11:03 little #### up by accident
11:04 really cracks me up, whether it was on purpose or not
I can’t wait for the pope to see this banger
Anybody else pause the video to look up “prime 4 vagina doors”?
PLEASE do a video on the NPCs in Spider-Man 2 😭
Liquid oxygen is impossible to contain via pressure at room temperature. It has to be cryo-cooled in order to remain liquid. Just mentioning cause you said liquid oxygen needed to be stored at high pressure.
Ugh i keep forgetting about this game and getting a renewed wave of trauma each time i see it. I assume its still pretty rough?
The fuel in Starfield is Helium-3
Prime 4 vagina doors Austin?
This is the content I’m subscribed for
Oh shit Daddy dropped a new video
Your videos always have me thinking “He really goes the extra mile” halfway through, then you blow that out of the water by the end and I’m thinking “He really goes all the extra miles”
You were unable to say Dick and balls because of your sponsor! Any, my boy, you’ve done goofed.
Wow! What a cool video!! Congrats feel in order? Congrats!
Claiming to be teaching something is a bold, I don’t know if I’d be able to claim I learned what material handling documentation is by saying I watched a gaming YouTube video
Calling Starfield a hit is wild.
Maybe Starfield was a good game all along? Fantastic video Austin, probably my favourite since GTA 4s powerlines.
✨A miracle this was posted in time to be my lunch video ✨
Go DMCA all of them. That’s what the system is for I thought. I wish you guys the best!
I love these sorts of speculative theory videos. But I bet you spent way more time thinking about this than any of the game’s level designers did. 😂
the fact that the devs replied to you for such a trivial aspect of the game is so cool
With the sheer amount of people (probably deservedly) making fun of starfield’s story and gameplay when it first came out, I have never played it and probably never will, but oh man am i excited to learn about the pipes. I wonder why that is.
Calling Starfield a hit game is pretty generous
im any austin, uhhh 18:30
I wonder how you Power a interstellar spaceship with methane!
So cool
Fuck yeah, an Any Austin video about Starfield!!!
Followup question, does starfield make any sence?
130 score is with methANOL instead of methANE, could as well be mistake on part of designers OR it could mean it’s some scifi plant to convert methanol into methane for starflight… (scifi because we can make methanol from methane, other way around is difficult)
Bro’s an expert at laying pipe.
his type of content is so useless for our daily life…. but at the same time is all i want watch and the way i want to learn about things. nice
Hey AnyAustin, plumber here… I’m gonna need more plumbing in video games evaluated. I see no p-traps in a lot of games and it drives me crazy.
“Hit” riiight
pipes?
My roommate works at Bethesda and I hope you know they talk about *every* video you put out haha
The NFPA diamond is not used to indentify the type of chemical, its only for hazards. Only the MSDS will fully indntify the chemicals.
i betcha ten bucks that there’s someone out there working on a mod that corrects all the NFPA diamonds in the game.
Animated diagrams? Be still my heart
17:57 great video as always but still no plans to grab Starfield any time soon
how do you even think of this bro
You should do the hydrology of death stranding
Shouldn’t we be focusing on what’s actually important in this game? It’s got PRONOUNS!
2025 Austin in on fire !
Once again here’s Austin, making the day a little
More
Bearable
this video is unironically more exciting than starfield
Hello, fellow grapefruit Spindrift enjoyer 😮
He’s done it again….
It feels nice to know everything was fact checked and is true!
Honestly I think the most inaccurate thing in this video is calling Starfield a ” 2023 hit”
I’d pay to watch you do this presentation style in a bar live
You always answer the most important questions 🥂
Amazing video how did you even make any of these topics so interesting?? Very impressive.
Can’t wait for analysis on the oblivion remaster
@11:03 I like the beep that just announces that a curse was used, and does nothing to obscure it lol
im sorry a WHAT DOOR ?!?!
Its very funny that this is the most stimulating starfield related content i can think of including starfield itself
Meanwhile, the concept artist who made initial drawing of this prop: lol i just drew a sphere at bottom and a cylinder at top just because its aesthetically pleasing lololo
edit: ye that’s excatly what I thought right away before seeing the whole video haha
nice censor lololo 11:00
3:49 -> literally watched those videos for my material science finalsfor my chemical engineering degree
At least Two people did their job on Starfield.
Absolutely appreciate that you pointed out how using disjointed facts contributes to pseudoscience/archeology. I am in an MS program and even I didn’t really think about it. I will defend myself by saying my critical thinking is often turned off for video game content, but I am biased in that defense lol
Hit game?
“hit” videogame?
The world/area/level design and overall aesthetics of Starfield are some of the coolest I’ve probably ever seen in a game. I absolutely love how this game looks and even the in game font used is cool. It just fits the theme so well. Also, how cool is it to get actually responses back from developers. I hope you get more of that because it’s really nice to see your theories put to the test.
craziest part bt far is to print an e-mail
I just did hazmat training at work. They should use your video instead. It’s way more entertaining and just as informative.
I bet those concept leads really appreciated your eye for detail , as we do.
jokes on you! i already knew how to ready the hazard diamond
11:03 I love the fact that he obviously just said fuck because he basically didn’t even censor it😂
A lot of this supports my vague suspicion that Starfield fell somewhat flat for me because a lot of the world-building was just going over my head. Like if you’re someone who knows there’s liquid methane on Titan that’s a cool detail, but to me it looks like grey industrial facility #473.
Basically I’m too dumb for the stuff they worked hard on, but the stuff I do care about (story and characters) seems barely thought out.
This video is so cool!! I LOVED getting to hear from the developers about the actual thought process behind all the little details
Titan in destiny 2 was also a planet of pure liquid methane and the playable was all over giant oil rigs that were mining the planet. one of the more inteteresting sci-fi planets in that game
RWTH Aachen
Calling Starfield “The hit 2023 videogame” is overly exagerated.
11:05 he missed😂
We use a very visually similar safety standard over here in Europe so I am actually completely unsurprised that an universal standard was eventually arrived at, especially since the whole universe seems to be exclusively populated by anglophones in the future. Of course they’d want to keep using the thing we’ve always been using.
I absolutely love the final part with the emails. That must be so cool to have gotten a response, but I’m sure that they’re even _more_ pleased than you are to have somebody so intrigued in their work to email them with thoughts and ideas about it. I know I’d be stoked and would drop everything to reply.
The oxidizer is probably entirely underground. My theory
This is making me want to play Satisfactory.
Death Stranding video when?
I enjoyed the hell out of this video. I’ve followed unlabeled pipes in my job many times, trying to understand the systems.
more mechanical engineering notes:
* lots of those pipes are way too close to each other, generally, and at the tank connections specifically. they don’t seem reasonably constructable, and these pipes are going to expand and contract into each other, especially when we’re dealing with cryogenic fluids in a desert environment.
* and that’s before a quake shakes them up
* also, most of these tanks and pipes don’t appear to be insulated, also important for cryogenics, especially in a hot climate
* the vertical tanks on top of the sphere tanks are too close. there should be structure between them, to support the weight of the upper tank. also, you can imagine the spherical tank protruding into the upper tank, so there’s negative clearance between them, maybe.
* even cylindrical tanks have spherical (or more elypitcal at least) ends, and these ends were sometimes very flat
* there are lots of nice mechanical connections between pipes and fittings. but tanks also need a fitting, typically a flange. in these clips, the pipe goes into tanks without a connection point.
* 12:02 looks at those pipes coming 45 degrees our of the 90 degree fittings, a fitting is missing at each.
* 6:07 these pipes really don’t akes a ton of sense. there’s a weird bent cross fitting on the top of one tank, that seems like it would be pretty weak. and for pipes to flow, they need to go somewhere, and dead legs can be bad, but here we see one prominent in the air. there shoudl be much more structure, so the tank itself isn’t supporting lots of heavy pipe
* there is a prominent isolation valve as well, with a handle. but no structure for a human to stand and operate that handle
* fittings in general are all over the place. most of those fittings, for the same pipe size, should have the same radius, but they can be tiny or huge (usually, the radius is 1.5x the pipe diameter, but there are commonly used 2.0 and 1.0 elbows. some of these look like 5x
* there are so many left over pipes! some of them in parallel going to and from the same places, which is very wasteful and expensive
Love the content Austin! I’ve been watching since the early EggBusters days!
We can say a lot of things about Bethesda (which a lot of them are negative) but if there’s one thing they’re good at, is level design and environmental storytelling
one part of this system im missing are the GIGANTIC radiators needed to cool the compressed methane. have a look at starbase around the launchpad. that is a real life version of this system and those coolers, precoolers and radiators are quite impressive.
“Hit”
This is one of the best videos you made
The most interesting detail in the entire universe is some pipes.
YES THE UPLOAD
“Do Starfield-”
No. Play EvE Online. Make your own story. You’re welcome
(sarcastic post)
Just thought I’d let you know, Helium-3 is the fuel used in starfield
This is such a testament to the greatest cheat code i’ve ever discovered – if you like a thing, you can and should reach out to the person who made that thing and talk to them about it, and more often than not they’ll actually talk back to you
Keep em coming Austin
I love these scientific videos about everything and nothing
VAGINA DOORS
As a hazmat guy this video excited me
Amazing video (I’m not a bot)
I can’t wait for the schedule 1 employment video.
Officially the first content creator I’ve ever seen to suggest pirating his own stuff. Respect.
Hit game? You’re so kind
Gagarin – first person in space.
Just letting y’all know
“I’m going to be teaching you how to read those little colored diamonds.”
I literally fist pumped _so_ hard
Love the sad farty fireworkers for when he was correct lol.
Every time I see that little blue dot next to Austin’s picture, I know Im gonna have a good night. Bowl of chips, iced oat milk matcha latte, tucked into bed. Time to watch :,)
I get so excited when I see a new video from Austin in my feed 🔥
Really cool. 😀
Methane doesn’t need to be stored in high-pressure tanks. it almost never is. It’s usually stored in cryogenic tanks at atmospheric pressure.
This is way better then _Game Theory_ ever has been
11:04 – the misalignment of the bleep to the curse word made me die laughing. Thank you.
just because something is far off in the future, doesn’t mean standards and practices will change. There’s a leatherworking tool called a lissoir. It’s made out of bone. Humans have been using bone lissoirs for 40,000 years.
Listen.. Hit is a bit of a stretch.
Well I’ll be damned, someone that worked on this game actually gave ¼ of a shit about the end result.
I’m happy Austin finally caught his proverbial car and was told he was right (enough).
INSTANT CLICK BOY
please please do the waterways in monster hunter world and rise
I love Starfield. I appreciate you making this.
Can’t wait for the mod that fixes those hazard signs and rationalizes the pipes
0:39 It all starts with…. ONE THING I DONT KNOW WHY
we gotta get this guy promoted to THE Austin
Me frantically typing in a comment about how you need both methane and an oxidizer before you talk about it. Bravo. OK the confirmation from Bethesda is incredible.
we need an oblivion remaster video austin
why hair clip <3
2:00 NFPA-704 my beloved
I love how you mentioned the Oxidiser-thing, bc I immediately thought of this as you mentioned the methane, but I really like the idea of one of the comments, that the engines may be Nuclear engines, who work without oxidiser (I haven’t been to Duna yet, so I wasn’t actively aware of this fact lmao), but what I find interesting, is the lack of hydrogen. Normally I would assume that a futuristic society has solved the storage problems of hydrogen, but this also may be an active way of world building, repeating that, even if this world is futuristic, it is not perfect, and that problems, socially and direct, still exist, and obviously are a major part of the world!
I somehow felt that Starfield had to have released last year. Not that I was surprised it released in 2023 but more that it just has that energy of “was once interesting but only because it was new”
Ive never played starfield or gta or red dead
I dont intend to
But thanks for the videos, I like the videos.
Good vibeo 👍
thanks austin, you enjoy your video games too
Bada bing! Witta pipe!
It is strange how facinating a video about what is practically nothing can be. I mean, it is not NOTHING but it is not intricate coverage of starships, guns or armor, political intrigue or anything that might be seen as “more interesting”. I love these videos of “boring places in” or “do these powerlines connect to anything” or long videos about rivers and where they come from. Or, indeed, do these pipes make sense! 😉 Thank you for taking the time to produce them Austin! I appreciate it. 😀👍
Can you imagine being an environmental designer for a massive game like this, placing pipe models around just for level design purposes and not giving much thought to the in-universe function of the objects, moving on from it, and then getting an email from a fan years later that shows one of your random environments actually lines up with real science and asking for specifically _your_ opinion? I hope this video encourages all the Johns and Rafaels of the world that their work always matters, and they matter too.
is it viable, as a youtuber , to sell heroin to your fans in between upload days?
You really need to do The Witcher 3
He’s like the only one I will willing listen to his sponser ads instead of skipping
5:07 what the hell did bro look up on google? Prime what?
Ahh, Bethesda’s latest origional game, Pipefield.
i dont like the thumbnail
I love this – I dunno – “post-game theory video” format, breaking down the easy truths we often seek vs the real truths out there; truths that maybe seem silly and arbitrary (packins), but are actually just as cool!
Didn’t Starfield? Use helium three as their alternative futuristic fuel source, not methane
Oh hey, you said my name 😊
You get a Like,Sub and comment from me for this one.
Great work.
I love your vids! It’s cool to see that Bethesda developers replied to you with their feedback about this subject! It would be cool to get more developer responses in future vids! 😀
I like the idea that the methane is safer thus having a lower rating because tech has advanced to the point where perhaps they found some way to make it less toxic or that there is something even more dangerous that they lowered ratings which I would doubt
calling it a “hit” game may be generous.
Man, those artist exchanges really just cemented that AnyAustin is a bonafide art critic, interpreting and sharing with the masses a perspective to appreciate otherwise unobserved art
ive never smiled so big about the promise of hazard diamonds being mentioned
I have watched many of your videos by now. I must say you are the person writers and worldbuilders fear. You are that person that looks at or reads something and goes, “Oh really? Let’s take a deeper dive into that.” Windows in the 1800s? “What kind of windows?” “They sang Jesus Loves Me in the 1700s; let’s do a fact check.” “Pipes and buildings? Per se, what do you have in them?” Keep up the great work.
The wait is over! Ive been so hyped since the post about this.
Was starfield a hit?
So cool. Thanks.
The build to revealing the response to your analysis was peak aesthetic Any Austin.
Starfield is a game ripe for finding small qualities and weaving a narrative around them.
It’s interesting to have that last segment of the video where you’re self aware about how weird what you’re doing is and having a whole thesis statement about what it means to have some kind of logical structure within the game world, even if it’s not relevant or planned
7:07 saving this for personal use, the hair on the booba goes crazy
This is the kind of stuff we are here for!
this guy is insane (in a genius way)
“hit 2023 video game, starfield” Imma stop you right there pal.
Easily the best Starfield content out here right now. Nice pipes
i JUST finished my clinical pathology final im so glad i never have to look at the NFPA Diamond again!!!!
what the hell man?
Well… Your explanations made more sense then theirs. It is cool they actually answered you, so I won’t 🎺 about Starfield this time. Congrats for the devs for being nice people.
I used to do environment art for games and I would always wonder if anyone knew the pipes I was placing did not make any sense
5:06 prime 4 v*gina doors?
Hmm not sure i care. I’m usually not that deep.
When I want to watch an Austin, I don’t watch just any Austin, I watch any_austin! 😉👍
Never expected a starfield video, but definitely welcome.
It’s cool to see the devs support a subjective interpretation, especially given that’s the point of escapist mediums like Starfield.
Due to the fact it’s a game, and given that the setting is sci-fi, it’s guaranteed to diverge from our reality atleast a little.
Hopefully AnyAustin will make an Oblivion employment rate or economic review series now that the remaster is out.
I don’t know if its a big enough section, but I would be interested to see what you think of the cargo sorting section in Halo 3 on the mission The Storm.
11:02 good thing that was censored, i would hate to hear swear word!!!!
I am glad there are people like you.
You bring me great joy
I love your videos my guy, you scratch an itch I didn’t know I had for video game content.
This was a video by Any Austin that I enjoyed.
My question is why is the nfpa diamond just on the wall of some doctors office
Mem made him censor “dick and balls”
I love that you have the ability to reach out and get a response from developers. So amazing. Adds a lot of integrity to what might otherwise just be a fun video with personal opinions.
A mod that plays this video during the walking parts of the tutorial is already in development
“2003 game” my man just described every Bethesda game.
Nice kraftwerk reference!
The thumbnail gives me such a vibe, like you’re a middle aged contractor pointing at a diagram, and I want more. This is going to sound strange, but I hope you’re still making videos like this when you’re that age so that I get to see dad-bod Mr. Austin explaining fictional HVAC systems in Halo 10 or whatever
ah yes, these boxers already came with the shit stains… I thought it was no questions asked when returning?
Oblivion Content?
This is the first starfield video I’ve seen since that game released
I honestly forgot this game even existed. I think most people also forgot.
can you make these type of vids but in satisfactory and it’s just you explaining your own base
Valves… I would expect to see many of them. All different types.
The entire imperial unit system is based on units which were invented 1000 or more years ago. So why would it be weird if a space civilization 1000 years in the future uses the same labels & warnings as we do today?
you are my favorite person on the youtube
That was strangely satisfying

my birthday is in two days so im considering this my present. thank you mr austin. thank you.
I literally just uninstalled starfield.
When I tell you my jaw dropped when you pulled out that Bethesda paper. That’s sick
As a game dev, you’re like the devil on my shoulder telling me that my game will be meticulously analyzed to make sure that every single aspect of the game makes logical sense.
I want to like this video four times and each time I saw I already liked it before.
Come back to Minneapolis sir we need you
please do an Oblivion video
_”English, French, and German captions provided by Lawrence.”_
There are zero captions though.
Love how you always go a little further than your initial subject matter and raise questions of a deeper nature. You’re doing good.
Wake up, babe! New Underwear Man video just dropped!
I wouldn’t say oxidizer is to burn properly…it is required to burn *at all*!
0:14 Cotton Eye Joe
Can u make video about ArmA Reforger power lines?
I start walking around at some point and they are pretty realistic for a first look
“I saw this as” is the quote of the year
“Hit game” is a long stretch.
I’ve commented before that Starfield was the product of artists that cared and a studio who didn’t so hearing quotes from the actual artists about the thought they put into their designs is so nice<3
This reminds me of the time I worked as a level designer. I’ve moved on to other kinds of game design since then, but yes, I, too, was at one point laying down kilometres of pipes in a 3D environment for a first-person-view game in a space opera setting.
Because pipes were all we had. The team wasn’t large enough to produce lots of unique or detailed assets. Pipes have simple shapes and are easy to combine into complex structures. Plus, if you take a bit of time to make variants with holes in them, they’re surprisingly good at pretending to be buildings. So yeah, a whole level made of pipe segments and literally a few other props, trying its best to not look like it was pipes all the way down, which it totally was.
The bleep for the f bomb being so far off was too good. 😂
Did he say, “hit” video game?
We’re so back
“Hit game”
“Starfield”
WHICH IS IT
Badabing
I super appreciate the work you do, because you put a lot of effort into the small details of games that I never think about. I want to start thinking about that more, because of you, so thank you!
I’m grateful every day that this channel exists.
Love the use of the Oxford Comma at the end of the video. Clearly a man of culture.
“hit video game” sure lol
In the NFPA (hazard diamond) part there is also UN1075 (Petroleum gasses, liquefied) from DOT regulation (or ADR in Europe or UNRTDG from the UN) on a wall for transport/storage legislation in 2025 — 7:50
the messed up censoring bleeps gag will never get old
It makes sense that methane would be so widely used, given that right now most new rockets – Starship, Neutron, Vulcan, Nova, and countless Chinese and others, are moving to methalox.
11:04 the timing made me chuckle
storage tanks frequently have a differently shaped pressure chamber on the interior than what the outside appears to be. pipes can be hooked up on the inside of the shell. possibly for valve temperature control
You’re gonna give aneurisms to these game designers… anything they add in a game now has to meet real world qualifications
i was literally so excited for this video, hype successful
Was that a delayed bleep I heard to sensor the bomb? That’s hilarious.
Going to send this video to a someone I know who works selling industrial valves and pressure regulators
This was not a HIT GAME lol
Ah yes, the lost art of level design
Great video as always!!!
5:06 huh?!
Great content to have in the background while editing my podcast
Finally quality content for this week
I think this is indeed a pipe Rorschach test, as many structures in games are.
BUT, you are not completely insane, looking for patterns is only natural. Wanting for your fake world to appear to function, even if in reality it’s still a game, and most things are places to *look* right.
the out of sync censor beep sent me xD
While its not the same, interestingly the NFPA 704 for methanol is 1-3-0, so they could have maybe accidentally mixed the two up?
Say what you will about bathesda. They care about their lore
Wycaro 339 lolll
Fuck yeah infrastructure man!!!
pretty please: can you do this analysis for the ventilation systems in Batman Arkham Asylum?
Great work Austin!
nice try but you won’t trick me into launching the hit 2023 game Starfield
as a 3d artist for some games, I can only hope my pipe layouts get scruitinzed, I tried to make them realistic but the dev had other ideas.
You’re literally giving me useful info about how to do research, useful info i can use, its really fun to see your thought process, i feel like i can learn a lot from it ❤
Such a sad thing that this game sucks donkey ass. Its truly beautiful, and I find it even more beautiful after watching this video.
He made it. He’s done it. Wow. To talk with them, to have this confirmed is impressive
Methane + Undies = Space Travel
a perfect thing to nap to, thank you kind sir
I’m not sure if starfield was a “hit”
Actually, even the EXIT signs featured in Starfield are old-fashioned in 2025. The new international standard for exit signs the Japanese designed green running man or at least something resembling it.
the f-bomb not being bleeped out at 11:00 and then hearing the bleep a few seconds later killed me lol
You didn’t sell why a woman should buy from MeUndies. Your ad read is very male centric. Maybe girls want undies too. They are so expensive for women he have to be choosey.
Professional time waster, you should go into politics. Also if want to know more about pipes, ask your mom, she knows quite a bit about it.
1/3/0 is really close to the diamond for oxygen as well, which is 0/3/0.
Fun video!
I would say thay most games have people designing purposefully made assets for one thing and then the level editors just go carte blanche on placing them like Legos balancing between interesting design and performance hits. This is why in so many dissections videos something make sense at one place and totally break elsewhere.
Do the tanks contain the unreleased demo?
“Do starfield… make any sense?”
Grammatically incorrect but the spirit is there.
I like how the only major element that was missing was the pump which is arguably the most obvious one even if you know nothing about industrial gas treatment.
This was such a fun video! The visual diagrams of how everything flows are so cool. I like to call this genre of world decoration “fake engineering”, basically just technical looking stuff that mostly looks functional, but is really just there for aesthetic. I like to add this kind of stuff to my planet zoo maps.
Im board and interested at the same time, im boarstrested
Whats a good video idea?
I can’t wait for a Oblivion Remaster video… it’ll come soon, right? …right?
Oh wow Starfield, they put so much work into it. I had no idea how much detail they had!
I love Google search history cameos.
This video went from an intriguing look into something obscure to a master class in level design with literal expert-level industry backing. Bravo 👏👏👏
I am unsure if the *bleep* sound effect at 11:03 was badly timed on purpose or if it was a mistake, but that was hilarious 🙏🏻 magnificent work as always, Any “Pipe Man” Austin!
As one of all 3 starfield fans on the planet, I’m so glad you made one of these for this game.
5:25 in the grimdark future of 40k, humanity still uses the biohazard symbol for virus bombs.
“NASApunk” Starfield definitely would use Earth standards.
You probably made those designers’ days with that email asking them questions about their environment choices and showing how close you were looking at their work. Beyond how clever this video is, that’s incredibly wholesome.
Just now I was playing the hit 2025 game Oblivion Remastered from Bethesda Game Studios and got insanely curious about the unemployment rate of the towns of that game
Are dishes the only approved distraction, or can i work on rearranging my pantry while watching this?
Man i love your videos its like a science video for games and its amazing
Are you saying that the ships in Starfield are powered by liquid farts?
11:00 “Starfield has computers all over the fuckin place [BLEEP]”
Bleeper wasn’t quite on it but it’s got spirit
finally a good use for Starfield
Dude can’t pronounce ‘Methane’ properly ! 😄
Can you do a 18m or longer video on why there are always clips in your hair and what are their purpose? Bonus content, all the awesome belts you have in your collection and where you got them and how they got to you and what materials and craftsmen were involved. That would be great and also fantastic. Thank you.
TIL people played starfield
Another oddity: In the doctors office, you can see a UN Hazard Diamond with a reference number of 1075 (which is liquified petroleum gas) like you might use in a modern car – but at the bottom of that diamond it has a “3” for it’s hazard class. Petrol is in a hazard class of 2.1 (“flammable gas”) because it’s vapors are the thing that’s most readily flammable. This means when you see a fuel tanker driving down the road, you’ll see the “1075” code sat above a “2” and not a “3” but I guess in the future we’ve managed to make liquid petrol produce less vapor?
Video game food. Idk. Thats the only idea I can think of. Look into it.
I’m a simple man. I see a new Any Austin video, I watch it.
Awesome video, getting comment from devs definitely took it up a notch.
this is my new game theory
Is your outro music the Unemployment theme song?
I forgot Starfield existed
I hope this doesnt have upset a lot of ps5 users.
Austin you actually getting a response is the best thing and that they clearly took some consideration in how they made the thing. so neat!
Hey Austin, what does it make us now that you’ve shown me your undies😂😂😂
All the labels in this video are things you learn if you’ve ever had a job where you handle chemicals. Literally learned this at my first job at Little Caesars when I was 16
Guess the level designers cared a lot more than the people who designed the guns lol
no. methane is a brand.
its like a traveller visits time square and is lead to think it is Nike
When a Starfield video gives you urge to play Satisfactory.
It’s nice to see that even though the game seems poorly thought out conceptually, the devs still put a lot of time and effort into the hypothetical lore of things that dont REALLY matter to the core game
cool video
Engineering finals mean I’m going to watch this video later when I can see a pipe and not cry
Bro is fixated on laying pipe
Starfield shines in the small locations, ship interiors etc. Those things feel tangible and lived in, as well as giving the illusion of being thought through. But when it gets to the macro scale aspects of the world design it fell apart for me. The big capital city planet (can’t remember the name) looked big, but didn’t feel big. Even going back to skyrim now, the cities ‘feel’ biggish, even though they are very small. it’s the same with the larger ships and stations in starfield, they feel tiny. If I’m on a large ship or station, where there are quest-givers etc, then I want to be able to walk into massive cargo bays and hydroponics areas, even if there’s no ‘content’ there.
I very much enjoy the amount of thought and work that goes into your videos. Questions I never thought to think of asking are being answered regularly by your channel. This one specifically was a fun little excursion into theory crafting a reason/use for all of those pipes.
However, I find one small flaw. Take this with a grain of salt because it has been some time since I last played Starfield but I did a quick google to brush up. While methane CAN be used for rocket fuel, one commenter on the gamefaqs forum (when speaking about grav drives) says “Thou (sic) game loves to remind you Helium 3 is the fuel source…”. It’s also used as the fuel source for Inter-System Cargo Links. So while that one tank is labeled as Methane, it would make more sense to have Helium 3 stored near landing pads. And probably a supply of regular helium as that is used IRL to keep fuel tanks pressurized properly.
prime 4 WHAT?
“Prime 4 Vagina Doors”, thanks for briefly including your search history, it gave me a good laugh
Earliest I’ve been for an upload. It just started sprinkling while on my walk. Vibes are good.
Love Any Austin. Love Starfield.
Anyone else find it very odd how Austin and The excellent man from mineapolis look so similar? It’d be very funny if they turn out to be cousins or something
I’ll get hate, but Starfield is one of my favorite games. So it was exciting to see you cover this! Very interesting.
Hit game?
this was a great watch, thanks for the entertainment 🙂
Sadly if you want to see the inside of the pipes you will have a loading screen
Perfect for coffe time, now do fallout car engineering
7:54 1075 is the UN code for petrol liquefied gaz
The Me Undies segway was perfect 🤌
Laughed so hard my dog came to check if I was okay
hope you make a water system video about oblivion or a furniture video on the remaster, the wood looks really good.
Excellence, would watch you civil engineer video games.
I actually didn’t expect them to put so much thought into it, wow. I’ve mostly heard bad things about this game, but good to see that at least their environments are really made carefully.
his head trinkets keep being more random
edit : nvm i thought he was wearing something else every video 😭
I love these videos, and I think talking with the original developers was a great idea! There’s a lot of work and thought that goes into high-budget projects like this, at every level, so it’s cool to see where the borders is between “I can tell you exactly what this tank is used for and how it leads into things” and “I thought it would look cool”.
Can you make a fallout 4 video about the economy
Starfield makes no sense in general
Nothing in starfield makes sense. Why can’t the starborn use shouts? Lazy af
Finally a positive Starfield outlook, I had a ton of fun.
When GTA6 comes out, you’ll have a fun time with anything and figuring out the dog shit system Florida has for everything.
I was literally just thinking about how the topic of each of your videos is so diverse and was wondering about the depth of your study into any field you decide to apply to a game and how accurate those inferences would actually be. Then you go and actually answer the very question I was asking. Hilarious and enjoyable.
🧠Liquid methane is normal fuel and He3 is grav jump fuel.🧠
Wow that’s extremely cool you got a reply from devs!
Miku graduated from Pipe Bomb Enthusiast to Pipe Infrastructure Analyst
Austin uploaded today is a good day
Yet again, Any Austin making the most uninteresting of things sound incredibly interesting. I don’t know if there’s any other youtuber that could get me to care about Starfield.
enjoy video games
prime 4 what now
great video as always
dying at the google search autocomplete “prime 4 vagina doors”
So cool getting feedback from the actual designers.
I love you
“hit 2023 video game” meanwhile it’s one of the worst received Bethesda games of all time
Aw man, these guys’ responses are so cool. In general, I love when YouTubers get a hold of developers/artists from older projects and these people still remembering and happily elaborating on all the details. Like the musicians discussing video game sound designs in Hbomberguy’s “Oompf” video.
Loveed hearing their input, thanks for putting that in the video! (:
Shout out to John and Rafael! thats so cool you guys got to have a conversation about these things !
One thing to add: It may be possible that the ships in Starfield use nuclear-thermal engines. These use a small nuclear reactor to heat up a cryogenic liquid, usually hydrogen, and throw the expanding gas out the back through a nozzle. NASA built a few in the 50s but never flew them, though they hope to launch one to orbit and test it in collaboration with DARPA sometime soon. They have very low thrust but high efficiency, so if some clever dudes spent a few decades increasing the thrust they may be viable for the ships in starfield, no oxidizer needed!
Mighty fine detective work.
your videos always make me cry
I LOVE that you talked to the devs. Hopefully more of your videos can include that in the future! All of your videos are like love letters to the niche developers who contribute unflashy and easily overlooked assets and environments, stuff that they probably never imagined players would consciously notice. I have to imagine that ANY such dev would be delighted to talk to you and explain their thinking, which would be fascinating to hear. It’s just a matter of finding out how to talk to them.
This is the nerdiest – and therefore best – shit on the internet. 🙌
6.20 hi austin i think this proces is known as de-fragmentation
*Game Dev Sweating* Has everyone checked everything that Any Austin might end up making a video about is all up to snuff?
This is the kind of content I love most on youtube. Here’s a game I don’t have any interest in, yet I’m so intrigued with trying to find out what these pipes contain
There is an ethanol refinery in far cry new dawn you should do a video on
The very slightly delayed beep at 11:03 sent me to the moon
when it comes to game environments : make it look good first, and then make it look like it makes sense. Many interpretations of the functions are valid!
“…hit 2023 game…” he lied like he breathed.
The pipes are by far the most interesting part of this video game
bada bing he’s at it again folksssss. Love the videos as always my guy.
the whole time i was thinking a spokesperson from USCSB would appear, they do alot of factory/refinery accident videos, but having the people who made the game was just as good, the eyes and thoughts of the people making it are so important
i swear youtuber nowadays wait untill they get some garbage sponsorship then just find some random garbage to make a video about just for the add money its awful
Helium 3 is another option for the tanks near the pad, as the Grav Drive is stated to use He3 as it’s fuel source.
Austin, it’s so cool that you actually got someone to verify your theories! I love to watch your videos, the vibe is immaculate every time!
The way your mknd works is amazing and fascinating. Please never stop asking the mundane yet interesting questions nobody else has thought about.
now do a pipe video for portal
Maybe the tanks could be Helium-3 for the Grav Drives? Surely they have to refuel that too?
“Prime 4 Vagina Doors”
What.
Helium 3 is also canonically needed for FTL travel in starfield
PIPES! YAY!
A+
Not just any old Austin could continue to put out bangers like this
The “oof” edit at 17:48 didn’t need to be there. It will also go unnoticed by the majority of viewers, but the fact that someone took the time to add that tiny detail fills me with joy!
They typically use hazard diamonds when transporting bc that’s a standard by DOT but in a work place you would you use pictograms which is an osha standard
Love the outro, master class
All over the fucking place – BEEEEEP
you tried, beep, you tried.
i, for one, would appreciate more starfield videos
Love that missed censor, lol
Dude, super shout out to Jon and Rafael for being so cool about giving some insight! You probably have tons of fans in the basements of game design departments because of specifically what you showcase
Really making me want to hop into Starfield again as I finish this video. But I just started playing the Oblivion Remastered. And I’m also in the middle of a Fallout 3 playthrough before that was even announced or leaked. I just love these games too much.
I was gonna try to guess the next video but idk if that’s possible
“Ma put the TV dinners in the oven, Austin’s on!”
N o
Its odd that we’ve never seen Austin in the same room as The Excellent Man from Minneapolis..
really makes you think..
You should do these niche details videos on metaphor re:fantazio tbh
RFK Jr hates to see this dude upload
starfield feels like one of those games where infinite budget and effort went into the art, world building, visual design, etc… then they had nothing left for actual development or gameplay design…
“..and if you have time, boot up Starfield and have a look for yourself”
Nice try, Todd Howard, but no amount of pipe infrastructure inspection will make me play Starfield again. I’m too busy following rivers and categorising bodies of water in the Oblivion remaster
as a game dev (and engineer) working on a personal project, i have the same strange sickness you do. I try to make sure all my pipes / cables go somewhere, or make sense.
“So have you made any headway with the new underwear name?”
“Yeah, I was thinking of calling them ‘I Undies’, like ‘I put on my undies’.”
“No, I think people would be too likely to connect them to Apple, right? Like ‘iPhone’ and ‘iPad’.”
“Well shit, that’s all I had.”
“Maybe that’s not ALL you had 😉.”
dude it’s really cool of the team at Bethesda to actually take the time to answer you. Shoutout to Jess, John, and Rafael, and may they keep making cool stuff!
0:01 “Hit”
calling starfield a hit game is a logical fallacy
The “bleep out” on the fuck being comedically late is so good
Hey Austin! Great video. Unrelated question… Are you familiar with the Nathan Fielder’s HBO show The Rehearsal and have you started watching Season 2? It’s centered around aviation, and I want to hear you talk about it on gl;hf!
Being able to get in touch with the artists who made these worlds is so damn cool man!
Next you need to analyze the club where the dancers look hella weird
13:00 😂 It made me laugh that you printed an email and put it in an envelope. The first thing I thought of when I saw that tanker was “terrifying” before you said it. I really do appreciate the developers attention to details. They could’ve done like Rogue Squadron on the N64 and just had random tanks.
Woo let’s go! I didn’t expect Starfield content
I love their artist mindset of allowing for and even delighting in different interpretations
This is a pipe dream.
The meaning of the hazard diamond has actually been lost to history in Starfield lore, they just copy it unknowingly as a kind of abjurative rune to protect from chemical accidents
I started this video at 2 views, by the time the video was over, it had almost 10k views. I like this channel and the people who watch it
Love the big emphasis on not taking what people say for granted and encouraging research and skepticism balanced against personal interpretation. A very fun, proactive mindset!
When an Any Austin video comes out, the yellow diamond describing me has a 4 in it.
man this channel is so good
In the game the npc’s say multiple times that they use helium 3 to power the reactors of the ships.
I think the lack of LOX (Liquid Oxygen) infrastructure is a flaw in your theory. Liquid methane in the context of rocket fuel is usually used in conjunction with an oxidizer. It would be like a big car wash with a fancy soap dispensing machine and no accompanying water.
(He actually addresses this in the video).
Getting correspondence from the creators is so cool! Congrats on that
this can help prevent… and extremely violent… few minutes…
…yeah ^.^’
Just started the video, I cannot express enough how excited I am that you’re going to teach me how to read those little colored diamonds with the numbers in them!
11:04 the censorship beep is off lol
This was actually so cool. I am so happy you reached out to the devs and got their feedback on your hypotheses. I loved this.
Also, UNEMPLOYMENT RATES FOR OBLIVION REMASTERED????
I’m never this early to these videos, I’m so excited to follow along with whatever background detail tests our information literacy skills this time
I’ve thought about making a video about ductwork in gaming. But always qorried itbwould be too boring. Videos like this make me feel better about pursuing that idea 🤘🏻❤️🤘🏻
Never played this, but will definitely watch video about pipes.
Hit 2023 video game may be a stretch
Prediction: no
Edit: I uphold this comment as a testament to my hubris
Starfield was a “hit game”? I think you left out a s there.
Unreasonably excited for this one.
It is so refreshing to see someone that doesn’t act like they can read the developer’s mind just from a couple pieces of information.
Another banger, to no one’s surprise
Hell yeah, brother. This is content.
Oh boy do I love those colored diamonds.
This video led me to realize I am a fake engineering apologist. First it was the persistence of ASME labeling standards “oh well even in a spacefaring society, standards are just an arbitrary indicator for engineers, if the earth ones survived, what reason would they have to make new standards?” Then it was the NFPA label “well they really only need one model, most people will have seen one of these on the back of a big eighteen wheeler or at a gas station or something, so they know that it indicates chemicals, and isn’t that really all they need to know in this game?”
I love this guy so much
Buckle up kids. It’s time to examine fictional infrastructure again.
HOORAY just in time for my snack 🥨
That is so cool! I’m sure you were over the moon (pun intended) when you got a response from the game design team about your theories. I know I would be! Another great video Austin ✨
I didn’t know hydrology and pipe engineering could be that interesting before
These videos are so specifically relaxing and idk how to explain it
I love your videos, Austin. This is the exacy kind of stuff that are lost when dummies say “We can save time and money and generate this with AI!”
Everyone involved into creating games, or movies, are part of creating a story and these little details that very few people CONSCIOUSLY notice are so important to make it come alive.
There’s dust on the floor, nobody’s been in that room for a while. There’s flies buzzing about, something is smelly! And I think it’s even better in these more complex scenarios where there’s actual science about, almost all of us will have no idea what the pipes do, so if you do it perfectly by the book by a professional engineer (or a way more sofisticated AI that would be able to generate something functional) isn’t the same as an artist who does a little research yes but they first and foremost make decisions that serve the story.
Thank you for celebrating the unsung heroes of storytelling, Austin! ❤
this is rather educational
11:04 the censor beep was off by like a whole second lmao
Shout out game developers! Love those people!!!!
The swear beeps getting progressively further delayed as each new video comes out is a nice side story
Austin put more thought into this than Todd did.
Edit: John and Rafael are both very cool.
I’ve got a lot of time in Starfield, and if there is any good in it, you can tell where members of the dev team–particularly the artists and level designers–really cared about what they where doing. Game might be a mess, but it’s got some neat stuff in that pile of garbage.
this entire channel is like if your unemployed friend was unemployed for a living (I mean this in a good way)
Could Any_Austin tell me if my pipes make sense? Doctors are stumped.
My condolences for all the loading screens you had to go through to make this video.
Day 437 of asking for a deep dive into the wasted rooms of Fallout New Vegas.
Austin layin’ pipe
Cant belive i just spent 20 minutes watching a video about pipes in a medicore game
Dear algorithm,
This comment is engagement. It signifies the quality of this video.
Regards
Happy to see Starfield getting a little love. Love this channel.
YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH LETS GOOOOOOOOOOO
I enjoy your passion for learning new things. Your process of- immersing yourself in a video game, becoming sparked with inspiration, doing research, then sharing with us- is very fun!
What’s in the pipes? It’s poop. It’s always, poop.
I won’t even play the game anymore, but I’ll watch a dude talk about the pipes in the game for twenty minutes. I don’t know what that says about me, but it says something.
Correspondence with actual Bethesda devs took this already great video to the next level (we love knowing you’re right). Incredible work as always!
solve apex’s caution triangle.
Great video! I love hearing the input from the real level designers and about how there’s no one way to interpret the environment.
We need Oblivion remastered unemployment stats next!
THANKS to Any Austin for having a SPONSORED VIDEO by MeUndies and NOT letting YOUTUBE ADS be inside the f*cking video!!! I see so many creators getting sponsorships and still doing this! That’s CHEATING!
Pd: I love your videos man! The great touch of comedy does it for me! And congrats getting the chance to talk with the developers!
Been a bit since I played. But for whatever reason, in my save, this planet was buggy for me. Only on this planet did all the sights on my guns wobble off their guns. And the quests were all broken as well. But it was just this location, out of all locations, what behaved that way and it baffled me. No other location did my weapons behave weird, and no other quests were broken in my playthrough
This video is more interesting than starfields story
is this a reupload?
That google search history tho
NEVER FORGET (Pipes)
This video needs more hairclips.
I AM excited for that
are we honestly trying to make sence of sewer the infrastructure in a game that relegates a population of billions to just a few mile wide capital cities with fun sized residential districts? you’re really scraping the bottom of the barrel here dude.
LET’S GOOOO STARFIELD VIDEOOOO. Ngl Starfield is the perfect game to do this kind of stuff lol
[Grant O’Brien voice] THICK PIPES
If only Bethesda made starfields plot and gameplay so detailed…
Never even touched Starfield but very cool none the less
The only good pipe is the one that teleports you to the next level.
I like my pipes like I like my river, makes sense and not at the same time.
all of this really illustrates how hard it is to portray a “future society” in any media. Even the greats like Heinlein had people using payphones on the freaking *moon* 😂
“Hit video game Starfield”, that’s an… interesting… perspective. Did you perhaps mean ‘hit’ us over the head as we collectively asked it to stop?
0:57 My god, the diagrams… they’re beautiful
This video is great
This is going to be one of the top 10 lunch breaks this week
you mad lad… you’ve done it. now what do we have to do to get a video like this about cyberpunk 👀👀
confirmation of your theories is the coolest possible outcome, great video!
So cool that the artists at Bethesda actually gave you answers for this
GARFIELD??
Genuinely after all the weird critical gamer rage reception this game got – this alone might’ve sold me on it.
The delayed beep after dropping an eff bomb made me laugh 😂
“Hit game” dawg no one likes it lmao it sucks
Todd Howards: “16 times the pipes. 👐”
I’m so sorry Austin, I haven’t seen it so….
Bada bing
Pipe
i love your channel! it reminds me of the old pbs videos with David McCauley, but for video games instead.
It feels like John kinda let somebody else do the artwork and he was in a conference room with Todd
“In the hit 2023 game Starfield” YOU GODDAMN RIGHT!
Love it or hate it, Starfield was the only single player game to enter the top 10 in revenue (in a year with Zelda AND Baldurs Gate 3!!)
11:03
Oooooops hahahahahaha
Just in time for my lunch break.
I use to be a pipe engineer like you, until I took a mouth full of methane to the digestive tract.
Mr. Methane
Just starting the video, I worked in an oil field for quite some time, I feel like something of an expert when it comes to large tanks and pipes
I FUCKING CALLED IT! 🔥🎉
(See: *community post* for further reading)
Can you check to see if the infrastructure on Mother Base makes any sense? The screenshot at 0:07 looks just like some of the areas of MB in MGSV
can’t wait for Any Austin’s first Oblivion Remastered video 😁
Liquid farts
I just wanna appreciate your confidence in our intelligence. You didn’t need to restate what the diamonds mean, you just taught us! Good script writing!!!
Honestly I’d hoped you were going to make the fire diamond out of the undies. That would’ve been a great bit but perhaps not your style lmao
it’s actually impossible to have a bad day when austin drops a new video
In your wildest fantasies did you ever imagine you would be sponsored by underwear?
You have a teleprompter?!
i love pipes
More effort went into this video than Starfield’S gameplay.
Never played this game yet I clicked instantly and am overly invested in this plumbing LOL
someone has to mark these important moments in history
HELL YEAH I LOVE PIPING
All of this just pipes
Huh… 2 min in and this is already on my top 5 videos of the decade
omg austin yes i love your pipe video its so deep and long
Oh boy, another Any Austin video.
Thank you Austin for piping us up the starfield
Star field
I’m here for it. Starfeild is a wonderful game that I loved despite how boring it got for me. It has charm
I love your videos, Austin. But i just have to say, in your video opening, the word “hit” to describe the game Starfield, is doing a LOT of heavy lifting. <3
Can’t believe you got me to click on a Starfield video
These videos scratch such a specific itch I never would have considered ever asking for, so I’m so excited they exist. Similar is a clip I saw where a guy would talk about propane tanks in an FPS. (I might edit in a link later if I remember and find it.)
this video is PIPING hot
thanks austin i needed to hear about pipes right now
Great video! I’m glad to hear that you’ve been enjoying Starfield. I really, really like it, and a big part of that is its environments – there’s so much to see and do across its world that the sheer amount of detail really astounded (and continues to astound) me. It’s not perfect, like you said, but it’s wonderful. It’s also great that you had a correspondence with some BGS developers for this, that feels like it could be a fun connection to use again in the future.
“Hit video game”? I disagree
Couple weird things too: Pipe slopes should be avoided to prevent any slack flow and air entrapment in the pipe (1:06).
And the pipe connections have the profile of a bolted flange (e.g. EN1092) but theres no bolts. Even if it was a quick connect fitting (like a Victaulic) theres no fastener in the model. Shame on you Bethesda.
“stranger things could be true” is likely a hint that he’s working on a video about the hit show stranger things 🤓
The art team: Just put random pipes to sell this is a factory or something, the players won’t care or look into kt
The players:
hit is a stretch
The guy at Bethesda whose job title is “Virtual pipe layer”
My phone says 2 views and 87 comments
Does Starfield Make Any Sense?
Pipe
Can’t wait for the follow up, “do the pipes in Mario make any sense”
This reminds me of middle- Game Theory videos.
2 views, 70 comments. prime time, baby.
I see giant pipe.. I click
Austin video dropped🤩
NEW ANY AUSTIN VIDEO DAY!😀
intriguing
I pray the oblivion content is on the way
5:07 😂
Man I thought I knew my way around a pipe…
“hit 2023 video game” journalistic dishonesty
Every time I remember that oxygen in Starfield is a stamina bar, and not something required to survive on untamed planets, I’m utterly baffled all over again.
You should do this but for a real life factory
I’ve never been this early to a video 😇
Mario been real quiet since this dropped
First 😏
Why am i so invested into this
So this is what Todd meant by 16x the detail
Please from bottom of my heart, cover Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 <3
No its starfield
Take a shot or hit every time Austin says pipe or pipes.
“hit 2023 game starfield”
perfect timing just got my food too
PIPE PIPE PIPE
One day you should do an IRL version so we can get a comparison!
2 views in 5 minutes you fell off
ok i cant do this anymore lmao
pipe time
Hey Austin! Been following you for years now. Huge fan! 👌🏻 are you ever gonna go back to eggbusters? I truely miss those videos.
I was about to crash out, but Any Austin has saved me.
Love
pipe
I knew my PhD in pipes and glorified plumbing would be useful one day.
Jk I got it all wrong and I know nothing.
me and my autistic wife eat up your content like no other
pipe
Top notch thumbnail lol
I’ve never been this early. Is this what drugs feel like?
Just gonna let ya know, nothing about starfield makes sense, k?
Pipes
I hope Any Austin does more videos on mundane Starfield stuff. I don’t like the game. I just think it would be funny if the Starfield algorithm is dominated by videos like this one.
I can’t wait to learn way more about pipes than I ever wanted or needed to
third view wow I never thought I could do it
The last time I was this early to a video, Morrowind’s sloughs were still rivers.
Austin laying that pipe
pipe
pipe us
YES IVE BEEN WAITING
By title alone, this is a certified banger
I hope they do. It’d sure suck if they didn’t.
Oh neat. Haven’t played Starfield but I did notice those pipes in all the footage I’ve seen.
Pipes are the only thing that interest me about starfield
LIQUID METHANE
Please, serenade me about pipe works and fluid dynamics.
Yesss!
16x the pipes
BABE WAKE UP NEW ANY_AUSTIN VIDEO OUT
I just subbed a few weeks ago after your RDR2 river video. Gonna be listening to this one right now on this long drive. Love your vids man keep them coming!!
I love this guy
pipe
Here he is counting pipes again
woooo
nobody wanted a starfield video
but everyone wanted a pipe video
i was just thinking about this finally someone made a video
Oh yes, it’s Friday, time for Any Austin.
Love your vids!
Shhh, my show is on!
P I P E S
Finally a pipe video :3
imma take a quick guess, and say no
I give this video a pipe/10
PIPE TIME BABYYYYY
Great video 👍 big fan
I have been watching you for a long time and your content continues to amaze me with its variety. Thank you for your professionalism.🧨🪝🦈
pipeing
