How do you beat the fucking 2nd phase before I smash this controller?

I swear this is the fight that cemented in my mind that this game NEEDS a “retry from checkpoint” option. Even on action mode, the dps check for the fight is absurd enough that if you screw up early on you know you’re already dead and just want to die to restart, but it feels like he’s intentionally not hitting you very often in the DPS phase.
