Nobody can tell me that the opening to this fight was not inspired by the falling scene between gandalf and the balrog in moria. Many similar camera angles, just seems too coincidental.

All the side characters in this prologue were great. I knew it was gonna end badly when I saw this for the first time but I didn’t expect a GUT punch of emotion. Murdoch and Elwin were both gone too soon. 😢 Applaud Ben Starr for his killer performance.

When i first watched a gameplay video of this game, and saw Joshua fight ifrit as the phoenix i was hopeful that he would win, from what i saw he was getting the hang of his phoenix form… Then as i was watching the cutscene of the end of the battle as Ifrit was beating him i remembered, the player was meant to win in order for the game to proceed… Seeing this fight again, it hurt seeing Ifrit beating up Joshua.

Why why would his mother allow Joshua to go to war!? Hes just a kid!! He wasnt ready for war!! He watched his father die infront of him, lost control of his powers, and didnt have the training nessessary for battle!! Why send him to war!?!?

I love that Joshua is almost like a puppy that’s trying to be tough but he actually has the power to back up his words. He also could’ve easily fallen into the trope of being too scared to use his powers but no, when the time came, he truly fought as hard as he could to save the kingdom. Hell, I didn’t even realize the first time playing this scene that he even has a sword! Sets the stage perfectly for his personality later in the game.

But can I be honest? I hated pretty much all of the Eikon battles 😅. After the initial glam wore off, I found them chaotic and confusing. I know I died multiple times in the battle against Hugo Kupka during the very, very long Eikon battle at the Fang. I would just rather keep my human form and fight that way.

I still really loved this game, though. Already bought the first DLC and we’re supposed to be getting another and I’ll definitely be getting that one, too (seems it will be bigger than the first, which was already an extra two to three hours).

What if Ifrit had no where to jump.

This has to be one of the best games of all time just in terms of pure spectacle if nothing else. The artists, sound designers, and animators are some of the best in the world and its all made 100x better by the awesome score

Clive’s voice actor deserves an Oscar for this scene Alone.

This fight right here represents everything wrong with this game.

The fight was needless…those were traitors he was killing. Clive thinks this low of Eikons. He thinks their protecting god would simply burn them without cause, even though an assassination force is proof of betrayal from the inside. And don’t come to me with emotions, he did not know his father was dead by this point. As far as he knew, he turned to protect his father from doom.

The Empire taking over Joshua’s kingdom, essentially reuniting all monarchic structures in one target to be taken down by the Republic, evidences an attempt at an agenda.

A monarchy is outdated, I recognize that, but without a homeland, the message becomes merely “burn everything to the ground”. Rosalia fell. It became a faceless enemy we need to destroy along with the rest of the Empire. No change to improve its political system was promoted. Only its destruction. Its destruction and its people. Joshua and Clive don’t even rebuild their homeland.

It’s disgraceful. But I would be unfair if I said that it wasn’t smart, the way it was presented. But they won’t have me fooled. At the very least, I’ll seek fanfiction to actually enjoy this story without being fed this agenda.

Spectacle and story significance aside, the fact that they just straight up went “yeah you remember Asura’s Wrath? We’re doing that now” and decided to be a QTE-laden downright spectacular rail shooter for this fight was just fantastic. And with the spectacle of it all? It’s just absolutely phenomenal. Can’t wait to see how the game handles the other Eikon battles.

12:20 evangelion unit 01 vs unit 03 reference

man the voice acting here is infuratingly terrible

So nice of them to make the worst day of Joshua’s life so cool.

Im assuming the king had ifrit as an eikon and ones he died clive inherited ifrit

Literally just played through this part yesterday and having been a Final Fantasy fan and having played a good number of them over the years. This scene felt so unbelievably dark compared to what I’m used to. I was stunned. Not in a bad way, it’s super powerful storytelling, but going from that little innocent kid we need to protect to seeing what happens to him (albeit as the Phoenix) felt utterly dark/brutal.

8:17 is where it gave me chills with the music. It is so good?

Everything just blends together so well! You’ve got the absolutely EPIC eikon of fire score in the background, you’ve got Ifrit jumping from rock to rock, you’ve got Joshua in his Phoenix from shouting “stay away from me!” it just absolutely ramps up the adrenaline for the battle you’re about to be involved in!

There is something so sad and chilling about Joshua’s voice lines in this fight.
Hearing him scream to get away or he’ll kill them just feels like a panicked child trying to scare off their attacker 😮

Keep in mind something about this. This is 2 to 3 hours into the game, the first Eikon fight and each one is more ridiculous and epic than the last.

11:42 This scene reminds Evengelion, the scene where Bardiel take the control of the Unit 03, and then Gendo activate the Dummy Plug of the Eva 01, so Shinji watches in horror as his unit slaughters and destroys the unit piloted by a person close to him. Even the screams of Clive reminds me Shinji screaming.

Bearing in mind the game mechanics, Ifrit mauling Joshua just felt… obscenely unfair. “But we beat him! With the health bar and everything!” But that really puts you in the same headspace as Clive. It’s not just sudden and horrible, it feels… wrong.

I’m convinced that This is the best opening in any Final Fantasy game

It’s astounding how much simularities this game has to Asura’s Wrath. Other than the “lets go punch god in the face” plot point notice how:

In the beginning Asura’s Wrath starts with Asura jumping off a flag ship and as he plummits he’s firing energy bullets at monsters as he falls down

And in the beginning before we even get here it’s Phoenix falling down and firing energy bullets at one monster

And how in the final boss match both Asura and Clive end their journey by punching their respective gods in the face making them submit and it ending their journey with both dying the exact same way. Well not 1:1 Clive dies due to power over exertion while Asura dies because he killed the source of the power demi-gods live by. And it makes me wonder if 16 was intended to be a modern day take on the Asura story. And if so this game went from 10/10 to 2000/10 for me.

God that shit was hard to watch

The most stunning cutscene in the entire game imo. Fantastic scores, story beats, and acting. It’s difficult for a game to really shock me but from when the king lost his head to when ifrit impales the Phoenix my jaw was completely dropped. Ifrits first entrance is just nuts in particular.

Im gonna post an unpopular opinion but this kinda turned me off from the game, going through the whole rail shooter sequence against Ifrit and handing him a generous a beating and even getting a message saying Ifrit slain and then the Phoenix dies ten seconds later felt cheap and kinda invalidated me playong. Dont get me wrong the music is epic and the visuals were awesome but why make us play through it instead of just making it a cut scene. Also killing a Phoenix the bird immune to fire with fire bothers me but thats just me being nitpicky.

Hope everyone else loves the game though just cause it bugs me doesnt it’s not good or fun.

I wish Clive had another Summon/ Eikon. Isn’t he suppose to be the main character of the game? So I’m assuming he’s suppose to be the good guy and the hero. Whereas Ifrit was always known to be a dark & evil Summon.

Also it COULD be that someone or something is controlling him? From the several game plays and trailers. It seems that Clive is the only one who doesn’t have any control over his Summon/ Eikon.

& being that Leviathan hasn’t been shown but every other Summon/ Eikon was. I’m assuming he’s the main villain/ final boss.

The way Archduke Rosfield is murdered in this scene really caught me off guard and hit hard. I assumed he was going to die, but he doesn’t go down in a blaze of glory or anything, just unceremoniously beheaded while he was distracted, trying to make sure his son lived… it’s brutal and poignant.

I really hate that FF is using the F-word now. Make fun of me all you want, but it’s just so jarring, not to mention unnecessary. And before anyone mentions, I know Jack did it several times in Strangers in Paradise. If it was clive it seems since he cant control his transformation maybe that might explain why he wasnt chosen as the phoenix. There are also 2 ifrits as weve seen in one of the trailers. I’m so glad this releases next week

This Demo alone would be my game of the year, Zelda was great but man this is just on another level.

It is weird that the vision is 3rd person during the moment of Ifrit is killing Phoenix. Probably to symbolize that Clive is not in control or is someone else controlling Ifrit?

Edit: Only a minor complaint. Not a fan of winning in gameplay and losing in cutscenes. After that epic fight how easily Ifrit took down Phoenix was kind confusing. Unless it was because Joshua thought Ifrit was defeated and it was safe. So he let his guard down.

There’s something inherently so awful about a child’s death being depicted (almost) entirely on-screen like this, I guess? And Clive’s voice acting at the end is some of the best I’ve heard in a while, as much as it really DOESN’T help.

Edit : Just realized one thing. Iirc In FF tradition, we have one summon for each type of elemental damage. Except for one element, Fire. This is because the main purposes of Phoenix and Ifrit are different. It might be Rebirth (cycle) vs Destruction (start anew) kind of thing between these two.
