Cid from 13 was both a good guy and a bad guy. He knew what the Fal’Cie plan was and tried very hard to stop it while still being a slave to them, but ended up just another tool used to train the party to unleash Ragnarok.

Fun fact about Cid in Final Fantasy 1: he was a retcon added in the remakes. The original Final Fantasy for the NES never mentioned anyone named Cid at all. The very first Cid to appear in the series was the retired knight and inventor in Final Fantasy 2. The remakes of FF1 added some dialogue mentioning Cid as the ancient Sky Warrior who invented the airships, but this dialogue never existed in the Japanese or English scripts of the original NES game, it was created specifically just to have Cid mentioned in the game.

FF8 cid is so cringe and disappointing. Such a shameful fall from ff7. Other than his one redeeming factor which is the prank of giving the protagonist kids the parting gift of a mystery gift magic lamp that on a whim transports them to a prison to fight a god. In a game with manual saves.

Only way it could be better is if was a fool’s gold needle the player tries to use during another fight as a last resort to panic cure stone and they’re instead transported to a secondary boss fight inside the first fight at low HP.

Btw Cid is based on Rodrigo Díaz de Bivar also known as El Cid Campeador a Spanish knight champion of the first millennium.
