I’ll be honest, I didn’t do the DLC before I fought Ultima the first time I played the game, as I thought the DLC would take place AFTER the final battle😅

But I’m pretty sure I did a good job at Fighting Ultima even in his Limit Break form.

And so, this spectacular journey comes to an end. It has been an absolute treat getting to watch you play one of my favorite games of all time, and my favorite Final Fantasy game. But before saying goodbye to this series for good, I’d like to indulge myself and give one last lore deep dive, focusing on none other than Ultima and, by extension, Valisthea itself. (LONG POST WARNING)

Our story begins over five millennia ago, before humanity, in another continent home to a civilization referred to as the Ultima Collective. This race of beings was incredibly technologically and magically advanced, ruled by a singular being known as “Ultimalius,” and building a civilization that defies mortal comprehension. However, their prosperity came at a cost, as their excessive use of magic began to bleed the land dry of aether, leading the Blight to consume their world completely.

The last remnants of the Ultima Collective, led by Ultimalius, chose to flee aboard Origin, their ark, divesting themselves of their corporeal forms as they did so, until eventually they reached a land untouched by the Blight: Valisthea. There, eight of these sixteen survivors turned their forms into the Mothercrystals, placing them at critical points across Storm and Ash with the purpose of siphoning every last drop of aether from the land, despite that that was how they killed their own civilization in the first place. The remaining eight would then use their powers to create humanity, and by extension, the Dominants, so that one day, “Mythos” would arise among them to become their vessel. With that, the remnants of the collective went into hibernation within Origin.

Centuries passed, and humanity began to build civilizations of their own around each of these Mothercrystals. These tribes, such as the Motes of Fire near Drake’s Breath, the Motes of Wind near Drake’s Tail, and the Motes of Earth near Drake’s Fang, would eventually welcome the first Dominants—special individuals able to wield the powers of the Eikons, which themselves were fragments of Ultimalius’ true power. One of these tribes—the Motes of Darkness, who lived near the Dzemekys Mothercrystal (that giant hole in the ground)—continued to worship Ultima for a time, but when Ultima failed to answer their pleas, their religion fractured and was scattered to the far corners of the planet. As Joshua said, the people once knew Ultima was their god, but because he chose to ignore them, they developed wills of their own.

All of this gradually fed into Ultima’s plan, which was to find a new vessel in “Mythos”—the one human capable of wielding Ifrit’s power—who would then absorb the powers of all the other Eikons and destroy the Mothercrystals, which would free the remaining fragments of the Ultima collective and channel their stored aether into Origin. Ultima would then seize control of Mythos, turning him into their vessel, which they would use to cast the spell ‘Raise,’ which would resurrect the Ultima collective in its entirety, coincidentally razing all of human civilization to the ground.

Ultima is a fascinating villain. Clive puts it in the end, he could have been so much more powerful if he had chosen to listen to humanity, who would have worshipped him as a god. But because he ignored them, choosing to remain alone, humanity grew to stand on its own two legs, and while it is flawed, it will continue to stand against him, because that is what humans do. And now, stories of magic, Eikons, Dominants, Bearers, and Mothercrystals are all just that: stories. Fairy tales for children. Ultima’s dead dream. His Final Fantasy (sorry, couldn’t resist).

As for the ending, I choose to believe that Clive survived and took Joshua’s name to write the book to honor him. There are several allusions throughout the story to Clive one day putting down his sword and writing about their adventures, but the ending is otherwise open to interpretation, which I’m honestly not the biggest fan of. I want a definitive conclusion, even if it’s a sad one. Hell, my personal head canon is that Clive, Joshua and Dion all survive Origin because there is nothing explicitly confirming that they don’t, and also I just really love all these characters and want them to be happy.

So if you’re still reading this, first of all, thank you. I understand that these deep dives can be a lot, but I love this game and its story so much and want to share that with others who may not know where to find it. And second of all, I cannot wait to see where your Final Fantasy journey takes you next.

I want to point out that Clive used the Raise spell on his brother at the end. After all that was the spell Ultima was trying to gather the power to accomplish for his own people all this time. It was casting it (successfully) that caused him to start to decay.

    • 2025年 8月 26日 11:25am

What I love most about the ending is that there is a possibility that the whole game was just a story, a fairy tale written by someone called Joshua Rosfield, just a fantasy tale in a book, but that is what makes Final Fantasy games so special, how some stories make you believe that fantasy could be real, somewhere. I mean, I see a lot of people in the comments firmly believing that it really happened and the book was a chronicle of the journey, not just a fantasy book. It’s open to interpretation.

XVI was a flawed but very enjoyable game. YoshiP (Dawntrail not withstanding) seems to have a habit of that so far: really, really strong games with incredible stories… but some obvious flaws/blind-spots.

Just say the words “Remember… Remember Us” to any FFXIV fan and watch what happens, lol.

    • 2025年 8月 26日 11:25am

here what i think of the ending : Joshua who wrote the book in the post credit cutscene are Clive and Jill son named after Joshua and he who wrote the book “Final Fantasy” about his father journey.
as for if Clive alive or dead, they kept the ending open to interpretation on purpose :
option 1 : Clive is Alive and he who wrote the book if you add the side quests in the end and put it in context, you can argue that Clive is alive and he made it back to Jill.if you remember Jill line “no matter how terrible the night, dawn will always come, and that you will always come for me, Clive”, THIS LINE is literally the end scene of the game, Jill looking at the red star then running crying all night thinking Clive is dead then she stopped crying when the sun rising and Clive saying “our journy ends”.
option 2 : Clive is dead and Joshua some how made it and wrote the book, or Jote and the Undying wrote the book under Joshua name.

    Yeah… this was tough.

If you’re looking to carry on your Final Fantasy gameplays… they’re all like this. It’s always a hard-fought victory, there’s always sacrifice. But ultimately love prevails and endures.

    • 2025年 8月 26日 11:25am

The ending is open to interpretation, So here’s why i think clive survived and came back to the hideout and jill:

-First and foremost, Jill, her reaction at daybreak. If you saw/played through the flower field cutscene you’d know that to her daybreak means clive coming back to her. That’s a symbolism and symbolisms are ALWAYS meaningful in FF games. Also the sigh of relief she made and the smile wouldn’t exist if she saw anyone except clive. Jill herself is the biggest proof that clive survive and came back for her. . Pair that with Jill’s reaction and it’s pretty obvious that this is Clive coming back. It can’t be joshua because 1) jill wouldn’t be relieved to see joshua instead of clive she’d just weep more to the confirmation of losing him SO and 2) because we know phoenix can not revive dead people, it can only mend physical injuries. Clive made a last ditch attempt to save his brother but it was futile.

-Secondly there’s the metia star. The wishing star that jill always prays to for clive’s return. It’s disappearance meant that jill’s wish was finally granted. She initially misunderstood and started crying but upon going outside and seeing him come back she probably understood what happened. Metia granted jill’s wish to bring back clive and it disappeared in doing so. The existence of the star and the fact that it grants wishes has been known and foreshadowed since the very start of the game where Jill was as always praying to it for Clive’s safe return.

-Thirdly let’s look at clive himself when he was at the shore. Due to exhausting his aether he starter turning into stone shown by his fingertips. It was NOT progressing on its own and it only got his entire hand when he tried to use magic. His hand was petrified and it stopped there. We’ve seen Cid losing his hand to petrification and the progression stopped there. We also saw cid lose his entire ARM to the petrification and it still didn’t kill him. It’s obvious that clive just lost a hand. Then he passed out due to exhaustion. A DLC idea would probably be clive’s struggle to get back to the hideout.

-The after credits scene. We see two kids looking like clive and joshua. Those are clearly clive’s descendents waaaay into the future and the book is most likely written by clive himself. He told harpocrates (if i got the name right) in a side quest when he gave him a pen that someday he will write something. THIS BOOK is the something that clive decided to write and he credited it in the name of his brother so that his name would not be lost in time. The exact same way he used Cid’s name after his death. He did it to honour his fallen brother just like he did it to honour Cid.

-Also the narrator of the story is clive. The beginning and the end it’s always clive narrating the story making it seem as if he’s retelling it to his kids or something. That just wouldn’t exist if he died.

-Lastly, clive’s whole development in the game is about learning to love himself and find meaning in life. This is shown when he said “no more breaking promises”. Since then all the promises he made were out of love and genuineness. Breaking those promises would essentially break clive’s entire development in the game and i doubt that’s something any writer would do.

Anyone that has played more than 1 FF game would know that clive is alive simply by the “when the dawn breaks , you always come back to me” jill line and the dawn in the ending. That symbolism is enough to know clive survived. Symbolisms aren’t new in FF games and they are never unimportant.

In storytelling the conclusion isn’t always spoon-fed. You have to pay attention to all the clues and symbolisms the game establishes to get the full picture by the time the credits drop especially in FF games where they love their symbolisms. This is exactly what they did here.

I hope i helped shed some light on the ending after my multiple hours of research (played the game and rewatched a ton of stuff multiple times to get the full picture of things).

FF16 is the maturest FF i ever played. it reminds me GAME OF THRONES . its not the cliché ending as you said and its good ! life is not always fair . Next if you’re still interested in FF series try FF7 Remake . Its not as mature as FF16 but its one of the pillars of JRPG’s. Loved watching that journey till the end ! ur fan from Morocco ✌🏻

Sometime be sure to go back on the game complete file and check out the arete stone, there is one final bit for beating both the end and Leviathan. One last reward and a game mode for fun.

Also I kind of like how they left the ending open, someone had to write that book by “Joshua” at the end but we never saw Clive die. Did he claim Joshua’s name in honor of him like he did with Cid and write that book? Maybe he only lost an arm and without magic the curse is gone, 0r perhaps did he succeed in bringing Joshua back and he wrote the book and got to live on? There are also rumors of a sequel for 16 happening, so maybe we will get to see the outcome of Clive’s journey, maybe those kids will even be the main characters, we will see one day if that happens I guess.

I won’t lie, This was definitely one of the CRAZIEST final bosses I’ve ever fought. And I definitely liked how all of Ultima’s final moves started with Un in their names. Pretty fitting for him to be honest.

I was definitely Heartbroken by the Ending, and it did make sense to me because let’s be real here, Clive was WAY too overpowered!!!

Even though Clive’s death was Implied, I think it would be a Logical Conclusion to his arc.
