I really wanted and tried to like this game, but, its just… It’s Final Fantasy 14 single player mode. That’s the best way I can describe FF16, it’s FF14 Single player mode. You can see FF14’s influence all over FF16, which is fine I guess. It’s just I put in 1k+ hours into FF14 and burned out on it and when FF16 dropped, it felt the same as FF14. May be it’s different now, I don’t know, I do plan on trying FF16 out again. I just couldn’t get through it because everywhere I turned it saw and felt FF14 again. And another point, I just want a modern Final Fantasy games that returns to turn based combat. Preferably with a combat system close to FFX, I think that is the best turn based combat system in any of the earlier FF titles (1-10)

Its final fantasy at this point a top tier cut screen movie is expected they do it time after time year after year with no slip ups rather you like the game or not the cut screens on the best of best so its like ok we know you guys can do this

You’re kinda lying about the exploration aspect. There isnt exploring. Just sort of passing through zones. Exploring implies you will discover some good items or places that are really breathtaking or interesting off the beaten path. This game has interesting places, but nothing off the path because this game only has one path. Good game, but I just want honesty.

Agreed with everything except the performance part (at least for the pc edition of the game). The performance is awful. The fps drops to the 20s sometimes and causes the game to move in slow motion. On one scene it’ll be a smooth 144 fps then randomly when the next scene plays it’ll drop. I understand that this game is optimized for PlayStation and not PC, but that is not an excuse to release such an unstable performance game. Otherwise, it is one of my favorite games of all time!

I like FF12 gameplay. A little bit disappointed for FF15 cause when i saw the trailer i expected more from the gameplay. But for this one is amazing FF game . Haven’t had time to play FF7 Rebirth yet. I hope FF7 Rebirth is amazing too 😅

This is coming from someone who grew up absolutely loving this franchise and one of my top 3 games of all time is FF3/6.

Now I also couldn’t stand FF15, so I feel as sad as it is the final fantasy franchise I grew up loving and couldn’t wait for the next installment, is clearly a huge departure from the golden era of 3-10.

I’m bored out of out my mind, skipping every cutscene I can and avoiding any battle that has nothing to do with advancing the story.

Good game so far. The enemy designs are kind of lacking, your either fighting a flower, a bird, a wolf, scorpion, then a few bigger creatures. I’d like a better enemy selection but awesome game.

I loved FF12 so if its anything like that atmosphere wise i should enjoy this. Just got it for Xmas. Ive played 80% of all FF games besides the OG 1-3 games. I enjoyed 7 remakes too so active combat systems dont bother me. Wasnt a big fan of 15. But if this is a combination of FF12 art style wise and FF7 type active combat i should enjoy this.

I’ve been playing Final Fantasy since FF1. What the FF games have become is depressing. They are nothing like the greats like FF 1 – FF10. I even maxed out characters in FF11 and FF 14. FF15 was a disgrace and from what I see in videos this game is as well.

This review convinced me to buy this … alongside with the positive comments here confirming it, I been a fan since FF7, fell off after FF13, it’s been years, I thought i was done with this series, but my desperation for a fantasy RPG in a market filled with shooters, convinced me to take another look at this franchise…glad I wasn’t disappointed, great review👍

I miss Final Fantasy being a turned based RPG. It allows all kinds of players to enjoy it instead of just action RP players.

I hate that they took the most popular RPG series in history and decided to turn it into an action game. There is no real use of magic, no real RPG progression, no real build diversity.
This is literally just combos and stagger gauge. All gear is basically just buy the next version at the shop as the game progresses. The game is fun, my complaint is that this isn’t Final Fantasy. Why not just make a new IP? Why ruin what so many love about Final Fantasy.
Why would you remove magic, status affects, unique skills, meaningful level up…sigh.

Which FF do you recommend to the DMC dweller?

Developers need to have the hardest difficulties unlocked day 1.
I dont always have the time to play through again on the preferred difficulty unless its a shorter action packed game I can burn through in a couple days time.

I think yoshi P played too much the witcher 3 and wanted to make a witcher game with a japanese twist. Even the voice of the main character sounds like geralt (in french).

Just like with FFX, the developers of FF16 have yet again made RPGs fun for hardcore fans and easy to adapt to for beginners. Now im wondering when i play Rebirth will it be weird adjusting to the different form of gameplay.

Traversal and the map really to me reminds me of Star Ocean the Divine Force the fact that you can pretty much fast travel to anywhere that you want but if you just pick any spot on the map and start walking you can reach almost any spot on the map if you want which makes it kind of like an open world map and that’s one of the things that I like that they did when it came to Star Ocean that the Divine Force they were open zones that seemed like an open-world because of how well they interconnected

I agree with everything said in this review. Well said. However, I’d like to add a couple complaints, the first being that for the first half of the game at the very least, the side quests are horrible fetch quests that add no value other than being a constant reminder that you are missing game content, and the second being that even in the main story there is a lot of downtime where nothing interesting is happening. This is also resolved by the second half of the game, but I don’t like that one moment you’re hunting down an all-powerful godlike tyrant and the next you’re building a workshop for a little girl.
However, even with these cons in mind, FFXVI is a game I can highly recommend to everyone who enjoys action games, and is probably one of, if not THE best PS5 exclusive as of now.

Sounds boring

My friend kept talking about this game before release and he kept begging me to try it out. I wasn’t planning on playing it but I got on after work one day and after him telling me to play it for the 14th time I finally bought it. And I have no regrets, this game was amazing. The bosses, combat, music, cutscenes, and characters. I was going to give spider man 2 my game of the year vote but spider man will need to surpass this game to get that vote now.

Can’t wait for it to come out on PC

I love this game and it’s combat even so I just wish Square Enid does not scrap that classic turn base system that FF series rooted from, I am not blinded by bias and nostalgia as I also love this kind of combat, I just wish they do not forget it and wish other FF games have turn base system while other release have this kind of combat other than that this is a masterful execution of a FF game to its combat and specially its narrative as what All JRPG should be.

i believe u understated how bad the performance mode is. Yes it is locked 60fps in combat but when you explore the world in performance mode it is nearly unplayable due to the frames being very inconsistent. This forced me to play in grpahic mode but due to the 30fps being solid i got used to it after 1.2 hours

I liked FF15; not because the combat was good but I felt like I could relate and be in the story.
I have had enough of the old fashion fantasy genre.

How can you sai that the game deliver when the commercial show us the 75% of the game, game play never go to a point, it start super good, but seriously need a lot of effort to end this game in this way, the play game is actually far less than the cutscenes. and after 50% the story don’t say anything. It deliver a disappointed end for one of the character that I was start to like a lot until Titan fight. After it turn pathetic as never see before.

This game was breathtaking. A cinematic masterpiece. It was a moving movie mixed in with an amazing gameplay. The whole storyline was riveting, character development was beautiful as well, a clash between ideals and values this game was truly life-changing!

The game is too easy. Really good story, Cid is one of the best game charecters of all time and its got eikon fights that are way too easy drawn out and too long. The combat is great, but too easy. I finished the game using the STARTER equipment for the most part, upgrading made NO difference as you are op from hour 1.

Love the story tho, its fantastic and thats what saves it because it aint about the game play or challenge.

I’ll admit i do love classic traditional ff combat, but this has got to be the most accessible game for any gamer thats interested in it and those Accessibility Rings are a blessed godsend, and for some reason this got me thinking about FF8, like i said i love classic FF combat, but could you imagine if FF8 got remade with FF16’s combat structure? Good gravy that’ll be sweet awesome, this game has to get Game of the Year, its story is awesome, music, ambience, sound design, good character arc’s shocking plot twists, an incredible world to explore im completely in love with the game, and without Microtransactions and that always online nonsense, truly the best game ive played in quite some time

I feel like I just don’t understand what video games are anymore. I’ve been playing them since around ’86 regularly (very first time was at the age of three though with our home Pong system before that), and I just cannot grasp the appeal for certain modern trends. Specifically the ridiculous amount of cutscenes and “walking and talking” sections. The pacing of this game is just so awful, and it’s not even an RPG anymore, but an action game. It’s basically baby’s first Devil May Cry/God of War, and I’d be fine with that if the pacing actually matched those games, but it’s not even close. It’s not even open-world, but has the same garbage pacing as any modern open-world game. Instead of playing a video game with cutscenes, I’m playing a movie that occasionally lets me take control of the character.

Ive been looking for the two 3D castlevania games and can’t find them anywhere.. Thankfully they put them both in this game..lol

I don’t say this because FFXVI is bad. I don’t have any personal agenda against the game.

I say this because whenever you bring up what could very well be a valid and reasonable critique (such as cut & paste side-quests which is very disappointing for a modern RPG, or frame rate dips which have been widely reported), it is immediately glossed over with phrases such as: “it’s ok because it gives you the opportunity to explore the world” or “it didn’t affect my enjoyment of the game”.

I’ve been playing FF since the first generation of Playstation. Back then, cutting scenes were the absolute highlight and it has stayed that way for me. This game is insane. The story was told breathtakingly. I felt the characters every second I played. And side quests aren’t really popular in any game. What’s to come? Get here, bring there and kill this. I couldn’t put the controller down. 10/10 points thx square enix

I’m about half way through the game, and I’m not gonna lie, I’m not really digging it. I watched this video to try and convince myself that I should like it more, but honestly it’s just too boring for me. The combat is offensively easy, and the side quests are beyond boring just to name a couple gripes, but I am very picky, so my opinion may not be shared by many. The story is amazing though, and the characters are well written and voiced. I’m going to finish it, but it seems more of a chore at this point. I was just curious to see if anyone else felt the same as me, but after watching a few reviews and reading the comments, I’m pretty alone on this rock.

How can people say that the combat is good? It’s super easy and very very basic. This is nowhere near one of the franchises best, not even close.
The Tales series, and the Star Ocean series does the “action” combat far better. As a video game FF15 is 5/10 average, as a FF main entry it’s 3/10 at best. There is no true magic casting, the combo system needs to be deeper, and the upgrade tree is for 5 year olds. The element weakness and strength systems are gone, and sorely missed. Also the gear upgrade path and variety lacks any sort of depth or meaning. This game is essentially a handholding cutscene simulation that requires zero skill or thought.

The materia system was great in FF7 with the customability but this is so hard to choose just 9 abilities lol. Some of them are so freaking cool

Great review, the only thing that is false here is the performance part. If you want stable 60 FPS for smooth combat gameplay you wont find it here. When there is 3+ enemies the drops are still there like when freeroaming in big areas or towns. Being truly honest the game is really bad optimized. Hopefully they will patch it tho.

I hate Dark Souls kind of games , I’m glad there are other action games like ff16 that are not using the Dark Souls mechanics . I need more of these games, but i feel like every action game of recent times are just another dark souls.

Best game since… Idk… Ever!

For me there was a clear run of classics from FF7 (original, PS1) through FF10, peaking at FF9. I didn’t play FF11 (MMO) but loved both forms of FF12 (which I still play from time to time).
Then FF13 happened… I skipped it. FF13-2 came out with improved systems and it was good enough to play, it wasn’t bad. Eventually I got FF13 and played it through because I’m a completionist.
Skipped FF14 (MMO) and was stoked for FF15. Could they get the magic back? Hard nope. I felt no bond with the characters. They were like the kids at high school I would actively avoid. Awful. Tried it twice, second time I enjoyed some of the gameplay design but still it was a dead duck. Never completed it, first time that had happened.
So now I’m somewhat skeptical but have my fingers crossed. FF16 certainly looks good so far.

I’m loving this game so far but it needs to be said loud and clear to anyone thinking about getting it: it’s extremely story oriented and takes handicapping yourself as much as possible to feel any sort of challenge playing it. That’s not a bad thing per se. There’s a lot of people who could appreciate that it’s more accessibly playable to them, if say- they have a disability that makes console gaming difficult. But if you’re a pro gamer that plays for the challenge, it won’t scratch that itch first playthrough (I haven’t tried ng+ yet so can’t comment)

Not enjoying it at all. So far my gameplay is 75 % cut scenes and 25% gameplay. Not my type of game. Disappointed.

I have never played a final fantasy game but this looks intriguing. Do i need to play all previous titles to understand the story… Suggestion ??

Do I need to play the demo before the main game?

Everyone is debating whether it’s a true ff game. Some are debating whether it’s an RPG… After playing for about 15 hours, I’m wondering if it’s even a game. It’s more like an animated movie disguised as a game.

And I definitely don’t use this word much but in this case this is a time where I will and I will state that this game is most definitely Epic and is my personal game of the year

Traversal and the map really to me reminds me of Star Ocean the Divine Force the fact that you can pretty much fast travel to anywhere that you want but if you just pick any spot on the map and start walking you can reach almost any spot on the map if you want which makes it kind of like an open world map and that’s one of the things that I like that they did when it came to Star Ocean that the Divine Force they were open zones that seemed like an open-world because of how well they interconnected

the combat is freaking amazing, i can’t wait to see combo videos by that guy who did the god of war ragnarok ones. I bet you can do endless combos in this game

How did you complete 40 hour game in less than 24 hours?

Never played a Final Fantasy game might give it a try. Is the Ps5 version any good? Or should I get it for my Pc

Lowkey this year is the best year for video games in a long long time. This game is amazing. We had God of War. We still got Spider-Man 2 coming. PlayStation is going crazy

ppls are saying that even at 720p its dropping to the low 40’s and the Performance mode is just there cause fans asked but it does nothing and y the game looks good but it won’t be a contendo for GOTY

If you want the game to be challenging, don’t use any of the Ring of timely. I wish they didn’t put them in the game at all.

After the mediocre nomurian garbage that was 7 remake this is a breath of fresh air for the franchise, really excited

i played with the special rings from story mode. the esper system that you can acces after beating the demo shows how deep the combat system can be, and how fast the ring can swap and combo between the 3 icons.
i guess mastering this combat style without the ring will take a very long time, but it might be very satisfying to pull off

They need to stop making final fantasy games for people who dont like FF. I’d much rather play an actual rpg from the company that invented what modern rpgs are. The game is cool but final fantasy it is not. Everyone who made the first 9 actual rpgs left the company 2 decades ago and now they’re just using the i.p. to make games entirely outside its actual genre. Change the theme that’s a sequel, change the genre thats a spin off. Imagine of the next mario game instead of being a platformer was instead an fps just because that genre is more popular. Thats the equivalent of what’s happening here.

If it’s too easy then it is definitely gonna be a problem

If Joraptor loves it, I’m going to love it… I wasn’t interested in spending over $70 on another FF game that wasn’t the next FF7 game, but I instantly pre-ordered after completing the demo. The demo knocked me out my socks, I couldn’t believe how good it was and how good it looked. I really do hope the RPG elements have t been stripped too much.

Which is better final fantasy 7 or 16?

I think there’s gonna be a lot of people let down by this shallow game, with poor performance and image quality in “performance mode”.

If you never played a FF, it’s for you and maybe you’ll dig it. But it’s such a by the numbers AAA story game.

I think once honeymoon phase passes youre gonna see how underwhelming the game is.

I played the demo, pre-purchased the digital game right away, I downloaded the full game and now just waiting for it to unlock tonight at midnight😁

Too much on screen CLUTTER during attack animations/gameplay. I don’t know how anyone can stand that crap. Even more annoying is the attack numbers floating around. You can’t even see the attack animation of the character through all of the special effects flying around the screen. Way over the top.

I never played FF but played this one and easily one of the best games I ever played and seen never played a cutscene

The combat designer for this game was also the combat designer for DMC 5. All those hours perfecting the royal guard style are gonna finally pay off lol. I can’t wait to nerd the F outta this game man!

Stranger of Paradise is somewhat forgotten but is an excellent action RPG in its own right.

I hope it’s better than the demo… fights were boring and I was mostly mashing between regular and magic attacks to do the same 3 combos over and over. The demo story was boring and uninteresting.

I gave up on FF a long time ago, running around in a circle for 100 hours to get encounters to level up just to go 50 feet further and then have to raise and repeat, was, well just bullshit. This one looks like it might be better, maybe, I’ll follow what others say and see if it seems like something I might want to get into.

Are you able to disable all these HUD elements? The visual clutter is a huge turn-off for me, as I value immersion in the games I play. Part of that means having options to turn off as many HUD elements as I want in order to drastically reduce all that onscreen clutter blocking my view of the world, characters, animations, etc. All these health bars, guard meters, directional threat arrows, button reminders, silly damage numbers, move names (“Cinematic Strike!”), and so on just get in the way of my enjoyment.

IMO FF7 Remake combat system was near perfection, they should have used it instead

And they should have made other characters join Clive, it’s not really a mainline FF game If you don’t have a group of interesting characters traveling, fighting and talking together, huge bummer they decided to make this a solo adventure, really bizzare decision…probably a skip just like 15 (which I skipped for different reasons) or will get it on PC really discounted.

I dunno… Combat in the demo was fun and all but the story and tone (at least in the demo) was so uninteresting to me, I can already see myself skipping cut scenes to get to the fun.

This has been my most anticipated game for years only after TotK, I’m so excited to be able to play it tomorrow. I really like the somewhat new direction they went with especially with a more mature and kinda dark story (so it seems at least)
