    I have 4090 with 7800x3D.
Im playing games in 1440p. Do you think that cpu update will see any benefits in this resolution ?

    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:56am

Really gotta start testing at at least 1440p too. Preferably 4k too. The benchmarks in the video sadly just say a whole lot of nothing for most people.

So, basically, AMD was part of a planned obsolescence scheme to squeeze consumers’ and global wealth, also harming the environment with unnecessary production and energy generation along the way. First, put the cache on the wrong side with 5800X3D, then on the correct with 9800X3D. And consumers support this strategy by buying out 9800X3D…

I can man up and admit that I don’t make enough money to support my family and buy even the previous generation of the top tier hardware. It’s a bit disheartening when it seems like everyone (or at least every YouTube reviewer) has cash on hand to drop $1700-$2200 on a freaking single GPU. And some even drop more by buying from scalpers. I know they do it or the scalpers wouldn’t scalp. Do people just not have bills, not have family, or are they just that bad with their money?? 😂 Alternative, am I really that poor? 😅

If it is not too much work, could we also get a Starcraft II benchmark, since it is a good example of a legacy game, which is extremely single thread demanding. Althought 5800X3D was already a really big jump for making that game feel smooth.

I understand the reason to test CPU with 1080p but lets be realistic now. Who will buy 9800X3D and soon 5090 to play at 1080p?
Maybe CS go players in e-sports but that is tiny amount of all players playing with best gpu and CPU.

I looked other game test youtube videos where were side by side gaming tests 7800X3D vs 9800X3D showing fps, min fps, temps, power ect on 1440p and 4K also.
Thats more likely test i wanted to see what games and where new cpu is getting more VALUE if at all.

Hi, New Subscriber here – great channel, very informative! — Quick Question, (I’m sorry if you get this a lot), but I could really use some proper informed advice. I’m building a new rig, likely using a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, if I can find one in the wild. All the AM5 mother board options are making my head spin. I know I want to use a gen 5 SSD, and 64GB ram (Do I need that much? ) And likely a 4080 super as my base. I do mostly video and photo editing and gaming. I want to build a powerful system for those purposes. What AM5 Mobo would you choose? Should I wait for the 9950X3D to drop? How much, and what speed, DDR5 ram would you use? In Short- Knowing what you know. What Mobo & configuration would you build? Please and Thank You… I appreciate your insights!

Assuming that you have something like 4070 or 6800 XT what would it be a great CPU for 1440p ? Here we see relative performance among CPUs at 1080p but when gaming at 1440p these differences should be reduced to a point where you would not get more performance independently of the CPU. Help!

    • @thischannel1071
    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:56am

Regarding 1080p vs 1440p benchmarks, it’s not that people don’t know what the aim of 1080p benchmarks is. It’s that people who are thinking it’s all about 1080p benchmarks (or benchmarks at non actual use-case resolutions) are missing the point that the CPU performance at real-world use-case resolutions is the actionable information that is relevant to people’s interests when learning how a CPU performs. It’s what purchasing decisions are, or should be, based on. Showing spreads at resolutions that are beneath what people will actually be using, when there will be no spread at the resolutions they actually use, is misleading in terms of messaging of what people should expect from the CPU.

Reviewers need to think about the reason people are watching reviews. Showing FPS spreads at 1080p for a top-end gaming CPU is just academic information. It’s not a practical information for consumers. By all means, show the 1080p spread. But don’t do it without showing real-world use-case gaming results at 1440p and 4k. When the results of multiple CPUs show the same performance at 1440p because even the most powerful consumer GPU can’t deliver higher FPS… that’s good, actionable review information that lets people know they aren’t going to get any more performance if they shell-out for a more expensive CPU.

And very-few people even have an RTX 4090. Even in another several years, the large majority of 7800X3D and 9800X3D owners still won’t have RTX 4090 GPU performance to go with their CPU. So, showing 1080p benchmarks without this additional context to interpret the 1080p results is misleading and makes people think they’re paying for performance they probably won’t ever actually see.

And people saying “then you’re testing the GPU and not the CPU” aren’t correct, as the GPU is only part of the equation. It’s testing the CPU to the extent it’s able to stretch its legs with (typically the maximum) GPU performance that’s available, and letting people know that they aren’t going to get more performance out of the CPU than what benchmarks at real-use resolutions show.

BTW, Linus addressed this topic in LTT’s 9800X3D review, and noted that 1080p benchmarks aren’t relevant for most people, and that looking at 1440p benchmarks shows there’s not really any reason to upgrade to a 9800X3D if already owning a 7800X3D and only using the CPU for gaming at 1440p or higher. That fact is hidden in 1080p benchmarks, and so only showing 1080p benchmarks misleads people into paying more for something they won’t benefit from.

Going to nitpick a little. I doubt there are many people playing Flightsim on a 1080p monitor. Maybe four of them or a VR headset. So 4K would be more useful.

And flightsim is more CPU intensive than most games so it shouldn’t be graphically restrained as much as average games. With all its calculations and such

If this 21% uplift is taking 30% more power, then this might be just from tweaking some voltages and we’re basically in Intel-bullshit territory again. Would be nice to see a follow up that takes into account power consumption, and even tries to overclock the 7800X3D to match the power consumption of the 9800 and see what that does (and/or vice versa, reduce the power consumption of the 9800 to match the 7800)

    • @dinvsl
    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:56am

Those benchmarks are completely useless for me, my 4090 is constantly in 4k and similar reviews don’t help me to decide if it’s time to replace my current CPU. If you pay top money for 9800X3D and still play @ 1080p, there is something wrong with you.

    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:56am

9800x3d + 4090 testing at 1080p isn’t very practical. I get eliminating GPU bottlenecks is key to getting accurate cpu gaming performance but a comprehensive review should also include other common resolutions, particularity what folks who’d have this level of hardware might be running, otherwise it’s not hugely relevant.

I don’t find the 9800x3d exciting. I got in at zen 4 and most of zen 5 was forgettable. With the 9800x3d only 8% faster on average, it doesn’t justify an upgrade. Sure it’s the best and that is cool, but ehhh. I just can’t get excited like you guys.

Hello, just want to post to please consider doing World of Warcraft at CPU benchmarks. It is heavily CPU limited game, milions of people play it, and it’s easy to test performance in repeatable way by just doing flight maps from one place to another (there are NPC which gives you automated travel (always predefined route) from place A to B). I’m sure WoW community would be hugely grateful, and it would be certainly more interesting benchmark than a lot of the games like Forza.

8% uplift at 1080p with a 4090. Now play with a more affordable gpu like a 4080 or 7900xtx at a relevant resolution like 1440p or more and now you find less than 1% uplift.

As long as you have a 5700x3d you’re good to go for the next 2 gpu generations. Dont fall for the inflated hype.

    • @samuelbirdzell6822
    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:57am

I understand why you don’t test at 4k. You’re looking at CPU performance only. There have been many examples of 4k results being higher with the newer CPU and many that resulted in the same framrate. I’ll never forget reviewers assuming the 3090 reached it’s limits at 1080p until the 5800x3d came out. 1080p data means nothing to 4k gamers. Should a 4k gamer buy this chip or not? Stop referring to old videos and answer the question. Yes, the 9800x3d beats out the 7800x3d at 1080p, but why does that matter to me? I don’t play at 1080p! Look, I get what you’re doing, but some cpu upgrades benefit 4k, gamers, and some don’t. Imagine upgrading from a 2700x paired with a 2080ti to a 5800x3d. Both are 8 core processors with the 5800x3d’s clocked 200mhz higher, but the gaming performance at 4k is massive. Stop being condescending and save me some research time. I’m a busy man. Just give me the data myself and the other people “complain” about, but want.

It would be interesting to see some simulation heavy games. Civ 6 (and 7 later on), Stellaris factorio with a large factory or some similar game etc. For the players that are most interested in CPU performance it’s usually those games and the the simulation time in them that is most intersting. There is very much a real world benefit to having faster simulation time as it allows you to play more in a way and wait less time between turns.

I get why everyone tests at 1080p for CPUs in games, but it would be nice if someone actually showed how important the processor was at 1440p or other resolutions, so say took a budget of $ $1000 split between CPU and GPU and showed what the various combinations of processor and graphics card would give you. I am sure there are Pro-Gamers that game at 1080p 2 inches from the screen because….. and some at the budget end that also do so too but are unlikely to have any 3d cache chips with in their range, but i am equally sure many day to day gamers are moving to 1440p or even 2160p as monitors for these resolution are so much cheaper and these reviews are not really that helpful in getting a balanced system for the gaming that they do.
I would expect only 4 or 5 games that best demo the differences rather than 45 games.

While I agree with testing the way you and others do removing any GPU bottlenecks. But I do wish you would include even just a couple at 4k. And yes there is a reason, I highly doubt anyone running a 4090 and 7800x3d is gaming at 1080. For example I would love to see what if any difference there is between the 7800X3D and 9800X3D on say Cyberpunk with full path tracing and all bling turned on. Is there any difference? Would it be 8% like at 1080? Does the CPU increase help with the high end ray tracing? If so how much? So certainly not suggesting all titles, but maybe just a couple of the top end ray tracing titles from your recent ray tracing comparison video.

Don’t agree with any of the reviewers on latest AMD CPUs. It’s 8% performance increase generation over generation at best with 9% price hike (449$ vs 479$).
Back in SkyLake days, every reviewer on earth was crying their lungs out how bad Intel is for releasing 10-15% improved generations without any price increases, but suddenly it’s a O K when AMD does it even worse. It wasn’t fine back then, it’s not fine now as well.

Honestly, only test I care to see now with this CPU are with a glorified tech demo that no one uses to test, but it is one of the most CPU hungry “games” I’ve played, and that being Star Citizen.

I’m running a 5800X3D/7900 XTX at 4K max settings, and there are so many times my GPU is just over there sitting around 60% usage. There are places, like the bigger cities and depot center facilities, that absolutely hammer the CPU. CPU doesn’t matter too much with other games I play, although I’m slightly CPU bound in some at times, but none to warrant an upgrade, but my 7900 XTX playing SC is just begging me to upgrade. I thought about the 7800X3D, but I’ve had my system since the R7 2700, as well have my 5800X3D BCLK OC’d boosting to 4.75Ghz single core and 4.65Ghz all core. Compared to my buddies 7800X3D, its neck and neck or slightly beneath his CPU in gaming, so haven’t seen any point in jumping to AM5, yet. I have a feeling this will be the year though.

The reason why people want to see a few games (mainly non shooters) in 2k and 4k is because in real world how we run these games. When get GPU limited, sometimes the CPU being 10000 times faster get next to nothing in FPS. The data we’re looking for see if going to get any real-world gains from 7800x3d to 9800x3d. What would be the point of buying 9800x3d upgrade, if only play 2k or 4k gaming due to GPU bottleneck don’t see any FPS gains or very little for $500 you would be wasting.

There are games CPU limited, there are games GPU limited, and there are games engine limited.
In “game engine” limited games you can’t get more than certain number of frames (it could be 200, it could be 144) even if add faster graphic card and CPU.
Usually it is related to internal clock of the game, engine can make certain number ticks per second, and no more and that is also maximal number of frames.

I get why you (all reviewers, not just Hardware Unboxed) test CPUs at 1080P — that you are trying to force as many frames as possible in order to take the GPU out of the equation…

…but that doesn’t matter to me. I don’t game at 1080p, and only run a handful of games at 1440P. Most of the time, I am gaming at 4K, and the 1080P data doesn’t tell me if it is worth it to upgrade as the CPUs become bottlenecked by the GPU.

Cost per frame chart really shows how much of a beast the 7600x is still. If you’re on a budget and really can’t afford these high end CPUs, plus you’re not trying to maximize your gaming performance the 7600x is probably the best choice right now. It allows for future proofing because you can choose a motherboard that supports the 9800x3d upgrade later on, but also you can use ddr5. It might have 50 less frames than a 9800x3d, but it’s more than half the price.

Its fine if you dont want to include higher resolution benchmarks because it takes more time. Especially when most that will get this cpu won’t be running a 4090.

    • @codymonster7481
    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:57am

The really bad thing about all these “reviews” is that they call the X3D the new master of gaming, but they no longer tell you that this is only at 1080p and medium/high settings. Anyone playing 1440p or up will not notice any difference what so ever, but they will lose so much performance vs other CPUs for daily usage outsude of gaming.

It really is like all these channels are now AMD shills, paid to promote the AMD chips at all costs. Most players will not see a gain when switching to this chip, and most single-player gamers wil actually see a decrease in performance. These reviews are total c@ncer at this point. They used to show you 1440p/4K results so you could see there is not a single reason to get this cpu, but they have nicely omitted those data now.

    • @max_blackened
    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:57am

Well, I am a software engineer, and I definitely understand why you guys test these CPUs in the way you do to show the difference as much as possible without limiting CPU to be working at 30%, as mine 7800x3d does in 4K, but. But I have 4090, and I play in 4K. From your reviews, I do get that the new x3d CPU is kinda great, but I like have no idea what gain I, personally, would get in my scenario. I get it that it’s impossible to cover all niches of audience, but come on – who will buy this and play in 1080p… I basically don’t watch these in their entirety anymore and just skip to your conclusions, as there’s not much value to see 250 fps that go up to 276. And I also do understand that there’s probably 0 sense in upgrading 7800x3d to 9800x3d for 4K gaming – mine is already sitting at 30% and 40 degrees C in CP 2077 path tracing scenario, but would be good to know for future reference. Anyway, love your content and will continue watching and supporting.

Edit: Also wanted to add that in my experience with game engines CPU performance does not really scale linearly from resolution to resolution – which means if 9800x3d is 10-15% faster in those scenarios in 1080p than 7800x3d, there is no real guarantee it will be that much faster in 4K.

They have all said that the 870 chipsets seem to be more stable or attuned to the 9000 series CPUs especially the 9800X3D producing higher scores inc 1% & 0.1% frame rates overall.

Nearly everyone is glossing over the fact that the 9800x3d is an overclocking MONSTER with massive gains potential. Any Joe Schmoe with a basic AIO can overclock it to 5600mhz all-core, and for the tinkerers who are willing to delid it, we’ve already seen 5750 all-core clocks being achieved pretty easily on day 1 with just a basic OC. That is a 500mhz increase, so that 11% uplift in modern games could easily be closer to 16-18%, and even more extreme uplifts to the 1% lows.

Things I am mostly interested in 9000X3D are:
    1) Does RAM speed/latency affect performance as much as with non-3D models when you have a dual chiplet model like 9950X3D.
    2) Does 9950X3D finally have 3D-cache on both chiplets and how does it fare in not only gaming, but also productivity.
    3) Will there be another AM5 CPU series, basically a 10000 or 11000 series.
    4) Will there be a 3D cache Threadripper CPU. Ryzens have quite limited number of PCIe lanes.
    5) A real life example benchmark for upgraders: basically take a 7700X, 7950X and then 9800X3D and 9950X3D, faster GPU that is available and test a couple of games with settings people might actually use outside benchmarking, like 4K DLSS Q to show if there is a performance difference worth the upgrade even at higher settings.

That’s it, just benchmarks? No further tests, such as overclocking, undervolting, temperatures? Good review, thanks! Steve, how about a matchup with the 12700K using DDR4-3600-CL18? I suggest this pairup bc there’s probably quite a few people with this CPU and RAM combo, people who bought into Alder Lake early in 2021 or 2022, when DDR5 was exhorbitantly expensive, and who want to know if the 9800X3D is a worthwhile upgrade or not.

    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:57am

I’m quite disappointed with your review. You test it with 4090/1080p although most users would use a 4090 with 4K. But 4K won’t show much difference right? Well in one of your videos in this channel you argued differently given DLSS. So why not include benchmarks with 4K+DLSS to see if these cpu offer much change?

All benchmarks being 1080p is ridiculous

    • @ClearAlera
    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:57am

I’d like to echo some other comments here of people wondering about 1440p and 4k benchmarks because those are better real world scenarios for people that are buying high end CPUs and not playing esports titles.

Obviously 1080p is going to show the biggest contrast between CPUs specifically, but it would be nice to know how much the high end GPUs at the higher resolutions even really care about CPU performance.

Hi, showing 5 games at a time is optimal to digest all the data

    • @carlkidd752
    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:57am

I gave my 5800X3D PC away as a wedding present and gave myself an ASUS (I can contact ASUS unlike Lian Li whom I will never buy any of their garbage again) X670E Pro WiFi and 7800X3D. My monitor is a 4K Hisense 55U8G and a HellHound 7900XTX. I do not play ANY of the games benchmarked…..I’ve been playing Guild Wars 2 for a bit over 4 years now instead.

I really do understand you using 1080P for CPU benchmarks, but all the data presented is rather moot for me as no one is giving me a 4090 (nor do I want the fire starting 12 pin connector), my game doesn’t have performance killing RT and I play at 4K. I looked at a lot of options for upgrading my EVGA 1080Ti FTW3 and the HellHound was ~$400+ cheaper than the 4080 when I bought it. No end-of-life crisis for me (71 currently) to waste money on a 4090, just to say I had one.

I’ve test gamed (GW2, Elder Scrolls and WoW) a reference 6900XT and a HellHound 7900 GRE, plus various GPU reviews. The XTX is a bit of overkill for GW2. If you don’t have a burning need to find respawn points by stopping and looking around with RT enabled, then logging out to disable it to see if you can spot any difference (besides a ~50% increase in FPS), buy an OLED or high-end (~$800) 4K TV and don’t bother with RT. My audio is by BOSE, so I do spend $ on my hobby, but $2000+ for fire starting and other features I will never use or want to, is a bit obscene.

Suggestion: Use an OLED and 4K monitor, 5800X3D, 7800X3D, 9800X3D, 4070 SUPER, 4080 SUPER, 4090, HellHound GRE and 7900XTX and subjectively (as YouTube is at 720P bleh) rate the visuals and show the 1% lows as that is a pretty good indication of smoothness or lack thereof. You know my opinion, but I feel this would give your viewers an idea of where to spend their money for best effect. YouTubes low bit rate makes rather pointless screen shots of how “amazing” RT is.

Another site posting pointless 1080p benchmarks. If someone has a 4090 they are going to run this at 4K on ultra settings. 1080p shows you raw performance increase BUT if someone has a 14900K for example they want to see what the uplift will be in a normal scenario, in other words if they are gaming at 4K on ultra settings what would be the performance increase if they switched to the 9800X3D platform because it won’t be 20% or 30% it’s likely to be 5% – 10% as a wild guess, which would be number they would need to know to determine whether they fork out the £1000 to switch. Even gamers on 7800X3D would want to know the uplift at 4K on ultra because that’s where they will be gaming. In my opinion a “gaming” CPU is actually just a gimmick because most gaming PC’s are bottlenecked by the GPU anyway.

    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:57am

need to stop testing on highest GRAPHICAL settings. you are not comparing JUST the cpu’s in this case because there is another factor and that’s the gpu. you don’t want to EVER be limited by the gpu. the bottleneck should be the cpu in every single game/test, if it isn’t then the test/game is invalid as a testing item.

also 1% lows, should do a avg graph (like normal) but also include a 1% low graph as well. 1% lows are much more important because having higher 1% lows means less felt stutter.

So it’s so fast that it’s no longer the bottleneck at 1080p in some cases.

Granted for me at least CPUs have been “fast enough” for a long time now. It’s the fringe cases where I suffer, like the times I play WoW, but in general have jumped to 4K now and my GPU has been the bottleneck almost always with a 5800X3D.

Overall it’s cool tech, but am really more excited if they’d do a zen5+X3D with an updated memory controller or what Zen6 might offer.

I’m always annoyed that big multi-game benchmarks like this never include World of Warcraft. I get that it’s hard to benchmark consistently, but I guarantee it has more players than a lot of these games.

I did my own testing using the 10-man story mode Queen Ansurek fight as a benchmark. (3840×1600, RTX 4090, graphics on high, all my standard addons).

I got an average FPS of 166 with the 7800X3D, and 192 with the 9800X3D. A 16% improvement.

    1% lows were 81 FPS on the 7800X3D and 96 FPS on the 9800X3D. A 19% improvement.

Hopefully anyone looking for WoW: The War Within benchmarks will find this useful.

I would suggest using PvP MMOs for cpu testing as in my experience these are the most cpu reliant games even on high resolution and graphics. Games like the recently released throne and liberty would be a good example if tested during world boss events or even inside a city during prime time.

What the 9800X3D is truly a replacement for is the 5800X3D. This is the one it should’ve been compared to. Most people who would buy this CPU won’t switch to it from 7800X3D, but exactly from 5800X3D.

Thanks for doing the work. I think it would be useful to get a couple of games where you test them at higher scalings, it makes it easier to see if at 2k and 4k it really makes an upgrade difference, though I do understand why that isn’t the testing range.
Really useful to see the difference between the 2 though. Thanks for all the hard work

    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:57am

I completely understand the reason for 1080p testing to isolate cpu performance… and yes, it’s a ton of work. However, do you think you’ll ever add maybe a couple games with 1440p and/or 4k results, and possibly add in a 4060/4070-ish performing gpu, so people will understand better when to or when not to upgrade their CPU, as they might not get the gains they hope for… ? Or maybe make it a seperate video after this? Can’t remember TBH when you last made such a ‘when to upgrade cpu vs gpu’ video. Thoughts?

To those who criticize people for asking, “Where is the 4K?”— they understand this is a CPU test, not a GPU test, so theoretically, it doesn’t make sense. However, some individuals with large 4K OLED TVs want to play games in 4K high/ultra settings. For them, these CPU tests don’t address whether upgrading their old 5000 series CPUs will make a significant difference.

Personally, I wouldn’t like spending $$$ upgrading the CPU, motherboard, and RAM, along with the overall hassle, only to find that it makes zero to minimal difference.

Unfortunately the 1080p rtx4090 test skew the results for everyone with a 4090 and plays at 4K

For you to be able to quickly just do 2-3 games at 4K would add at least a reference point of “hey, if your gaming at 4K you will see a .5% increase in most games and there is no reason to upgrade your CPU”

Because some people will see results like this and assume there is some kind if not similar performance to be had.

Lots of people have money to blow but neither the understanding or time to actually know what effects the system as a whole.

It feels like a no-brainer to go for the 9800 over the 7800 for new builds. It’s a bit more expensive but the percentage performance increase is even greater. In practice the gain in average FPS won’t be quite as high due to the gpu being the bottleneck, but it will help greatly with frame dips in cpu-intensive areas. I would only go with the 7800 if you will only be playing in 4K and will never be cpu-bound.

Also it consumes much less power, so you could potentially save both money and decibels by going with a smaller cooler.

It depends on local pricing though. I can buy the 7800 for $530 while the 9800 is $600.

It’s funny that I had written this long comment talking about creating some additional new metric where you remove games that distort the averages because they are GPU limited, and then you did exactly that. I think that this is a great additional metric to add to your results, especially since the reason that you use 1080p resolution and the largest GPU available is to better target the performance list provided specifically by the CPU. So, it seems sort of “wrong” to include games that “cannot be lifted” when trying to target lift. I think that providing both averages (when there is actually a difference) is great additional content, thanks.

    • @Reknilador
    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:57am

These results are very lacklustre considering how big of a jump the 7800x3d was compared to the 5800x3d, i get that it was am4 to am5, but this is barely above margin of error. The only reason it’s deemed good is cause Intel regressed in performance for this time around, I hope we see bigger gains in the next generation, this isn’t worth buying unless you’re new to the platform.

    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:57am

I do get the reasoning for 1080p benches, but after you’ve done a couple of them, ok so you’re probably gonna get a good boost across almost all games.. but with no 1440p where the vast majority of players play, you can judge a generational benefit.

Same being said on Gamersnexus and Jayz2cents videos too.

I know that to test the true potential of a CPU you have to do it at 1080p and low details but I would have liked to see the differences at least at 1440p. After all, who will ever use a 9800x3d at 1080p in real life?

was hoping for some higher resolution and graphics settings benchmarks.. I get it, it pushes the CPU more instead of GPU but.. I’m not buying a 9800x3d so my 4070 super can play at 1080p medium settings on my 3440×1440 screen lol. how big of a difference will the 9800x3d be vs a 9600x for example? as it’s over twice the price..

    • @NoirTenshin
    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:57am

I am aware that almost all 3D cpus starting from 5700x3D / 5800x3D behave almost identical in “vanilla” 4k scenarios, but I have not seen much testing with DLSS & FrameGen / if it can make a difference (on 4090).
The reason is that I currently on 5600x (non-3D), with a 4090, and thinking of an upgrade. When playing without dlss and frame gen, 5600x (in most cases) is not a bottleneck, but times are changing, both are becoming “recommended” and there is a possibility that the 5600x will become a bottleneck. Or at least heavily influence 1% and 0.1% lows.

So I am in a kind of a limbo between 5800x3D (for something like 250 euro in my country) or go AM5 (9800x3D) which should be around 1300 euros (for the whole upgrade, MB, CPU, RAM…).
So additional information on that topic would be helpful as they could impact the decision. ATM no plans for upgrading to 5090 (for folks that will ask me to wait for it’s release before upgrading).
    Thanks

While this seems good, this still doesn’t align with gamers who will purchase this CPU. It is highly possible that they will play games at 2560 x 1440, 3440 x 1440, 3840 x 1600, or 3840 x 2160.
So this is still best case scenario for Ryzen 7 9800X3D.
I am not going to deny that this is a good result because the improvement reach close to 20% in some games which is amazing.

We want to see the difference in performance with 1440p et 4k resolution to see if there is any meaningfull gains when using DLSS etc..wich lower the strain on the GPU 1080p benchmark is that benchmark at this point you can fireup a CPU benchmark and you will see wich CPU beat the best scores lol wich isnt what as gamer want to see ! My theory is there is little to no gain to go from a 7800x3d to a 9800x3d when playing at 1440p and above even with dlss ..

Yes i understand that the point is to induce cpu limitation, but the severity of the “unrealistic” scenarios you impose does not show up in real life until like a decade later… By then most people (who buy these high end parts) changed 2-3 platforms, let alone one cpu

TLDR: Please, include Factorio in your benchmarks again. Factorio is one of the most played games on Steam, specially now that it has released it’s biggest update yet. Hitting 118k avg players in the last 30 days (SteamDB).

I’m probably the minority here, but I was so happy to see that you were including Factorio in your benchmarks in your previous X3D reviews, since it makes such a huge difference for it vs a non-x3d CPU and almost none/none other channel are doing, specially in a reliable way like you guys do. I was hoping that you were going to include in some video of the 9800x3D, specially now that Factorio has released its biggest update yet, and now there’s never been so many people playing it (hitting 118k in October avg from 18k in September, easily keeping itself in the top 30 most played on Steam).

    • @pino_de_vogel
    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:58am

And most important to me is how is power draw in the games where they hjave no uplift at all? same or worse? as that shows a lot. And how much more power % wise does the 9800X3D use for how many % gains. power all results to cost of running for a chip and effectifly increases the price of the cpu by up to hundreds of dollars based on how much you game and your power costs.

    • @LBXZero
    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:58am

I have a thorough explanation on why the X3D CPUs perform across the scale like they do. The basic is “Is game engine’s minimum requirements based on 60 FPS with DDR4 worst default, DDR4 dual channel, or DDR5?” The calculations come out that a game designed to run at 60 FPS on DDR4 single channel 2133 MHZ will have its RAM footprint for the CPU-bound workloads to safely fit inside that 96MB v-cache buffer, not having to rely on memory latency. This allows the CPU portion of the game to run without waiting on system resources, effectively utilizing the CPU’s full computational power. Meanwhile, games that require DDR4 dual channel or 3200MHz to reach 60 FPS may not fit entirely inside the v-cache buffer, so the game engine has to wait on the memory bus to swap some of the data between RAM and cache during a full loop. Such games may require upwards to 256MB of 3D v-cache to get that uplift, giving us minor uplifts from processing the full loop faster and requesting data from RAM microseconds sooner.

As for what an average 8% uplift can mean, the target boost clock of the 9800X3D is 5.2 GHz. Setting 5.2 GHz as 108% the performance of a similar CPU gives us ~4.8 GHz. Both the 9800X3D and 7800X3D are 120W parts, but the 7800X3D CPU has a strict max clock of 5.05 GHz and a strict thermal limit of 89°C. The 9800X3D has power efficiency improvements without the strict clock and thermal limits. It is questionable if the CPU has a strict power limit. We have seen some benchmarks show the 9800X3D going up to 5.4 GHz, which is roughly a 7% increase over 5.05 GHz and 12.5% increase over 4.8 GHz. More or less, the 9800X3D is allowed to reach the power limit.

The end comment, I think AMD released the 9800X3D first because of what the 9950X3D can do. I am expecting the 9950X3D CPU to allow a 170W power limit, which is +50W over the 7950X3D. The 7950X3D CPUs require higher binned parts over the 7800X3D as the 7950X3D CPU was power limited to 120W to support 2 CCDs. This could open up the possibility that the 9900X3D will be more competitive against its siblings the 9800X3D and 9950X3D than the 7900X3D could muster. The 7900X3D definitely had the weakest binned v-cache CCD as it only need 6 good cores instead of relying on 8 good cores with optimal efficiency (7950X3D) or 8 decent cores that can push through with enough power (7800X3D). Regardless if the 9950X3D has 2 v-cache CCDs or 1, I still want to see this CPU tested with 1 CCD disabled. Imagine if the power limit allows the 9950X3D to hit 6 GHz on some core workload.

Performance in actual matches with DX12 has been super poor since its recent implementation and the in-game benchmark is largely misinformative in what framerates you can expect in the more recent map releases (Lair, Nighthaven Labs, and Emerald Plains compared to current iteration of Oregon shown in the benchmark)

CPU binds can manifest in different ways.
One possibility that might explain the low or zero gain cases is where there’s a high percentage of L3 cache misses.
If the cause is poor cache utilisation (less of the cached data being used) or saturation of the cache, then CPUs with more cache should see greater benefit. It’s more likely that some of these CPU-bound tests showing small gains are being caused by scattered, unpredictable memory access. The cache can only help so much when it’s not clear what data should and should not be in the cache at any given time. This situation would benefit from lower latency access to main memory and/or out-of-order execution. If that’s being bottlenecked by a common memory controller between the CPUs, that could partly explain why those CPUs would perform similarly.
This isn’t the full picture but can provide a good way to think about why 3D V-Cache wasn’t always winning out over Intel CPUs in some games.

I will leave this information here : AMD has re-engineered its cutting-edge on-chip memory solution with 2nd Gen AMD 3D V-Cache technology. The 64MB cache memory has been relocated below the processor, which puts the core complex die (CCD) closer to the cooling solution to help keep the “Zen 5” cores cooler, delivering high clock rates and providing up to an average 8% gaming performance improvement compared to our last-gen generation and up to an average 20% faster than the competition. This revolutionary change in placement allows for extreme overclocking of the processor.

Can you add even one or two Path Tracing test on future CPU reviews? On all my CPU testing, the PT is by far the biggest hit on the CPU usage. It just melts the CPU performance on games with already high CPU load (Cyberpunk). You can even run these with low rendering resolution (high crowd density) to show these differences, but use the highest GPU settings + PT. In my tests with 5800x3D, the CPU couldn’t handle even console level fps.

I’m just afraid that this is going to be a bigger issue with RTX 50XX GPUs that have probably double the RT performance vs. 40xx cards. I can see plenty of scenarios where users are hard CPU bottlenecked with Path Tracing turned on. They might use 4k DLSS performance PT on with RTX 5090/5080 and use 5800x3d, 7800x3D, or 9800x3D. This was a bit funny when I saw my results on CPU test. I wasn’t expecting this to be so massive issue.

The primary screen will be a 1440p at the very least which is decent on most mid range to top end gpus today. • 2024年 11月 12日 9:58am

This is a great video telling 4090 owners what uplift they will get.
    But my friend has a 3090 and an intel 10850K, my son has a 6700XT and a 5800X and I have a 4070s with a 7800X3D.
We are normal people, not millionaires, and cant find any uplift information anywhere.
I may have to do some differential calculus on all the benchmarks I can find for old CPU’s and old GPU’s to try and estimate using numerical methods to figure it out.
So my recommendations to my friend is to just upgrade his CPU to the fastest gaming CPU. This takes the maths out of the equation and in future reduces the question to one variable.
Even if he gets no uplift from this upgrade.

I wonder if some of those 19 games were broken by 24H2 as we saw in you 7800X3d comparisons with the previous version was slower with 24H2. Maybe those games do better with the 9800X3D in the prior version of windows against the 7800X3D. I would just test one of the F1 games in the older version to see if there is a difference. This would tell us that Windows is still broken for some games.

    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:58am

1080p is like 480p benchmark – theoretical. I hope people move to 1440 benchmarks soon, it would give more useful understanding for consumers. Also different Indie games are usually more bottlenecked on CPU than those used in benchmarks (Tarkov for example).
    Thx for the video anyway.

    • @asysjr
    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:58am

In CPU benchmarks, I focus more on the heavy CPU titles, where you get something like 15%. The ones that are GPU bottleneck will not represent the real improvements of the cpu. Not saying thats is wrong to put these titles, they need to be in the data anyway, but we need to understand the data to get a more accurate conclusion.

    • @endx9
    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:58am

While I completely get why 1080p testing is necessary to give the most accurate difference between CPU’s, fire an arrow at my knee but I still think 1440p or higher testing is useful to people. These resolutions are what a lot of people will be gaming at, especially with a 490 and high end CPU, 590 and beyond this usefulness will only increase.😁

Edit; I was speaking generally btw and not about this video (which is excellent), my mistake, I’m referring to CPU tests with a whole load of CPUs being tested. I’m about to upgrade from an i9 9900k at 1440p so was just curious what gains I’d get, getting frustrated with not being able to find any benchmarks lol.

Do you have Ambient Occlusion on, and Shadows on High (as it has a competitive advantage, but at the same time is more gpu demanding). I play on 4:3 and stretched on low resolution with combined settings and get 300-400 fps with 3060 12gb and 5800x

And Dragons Dogma 2 Vernworth, for how intensive on the CPU that is, it should be the new gold standard for CPU testing. Does Nvidia CPU overhead matter for fast CPUs even when CPU limited on a 4090, as it’s still faster than the 7900XTX overall at 1080p with a 9800X3D presumably?

Automating the game execution as a suit of test benchmarks on multiple machine configurations is a QA engineer’s bread and butter. If they’re not doing it yet I think they should have a scalable test bench because doing that work manually isn’t smart, it’s busy work. Instead time could be spend going deeper on the “why” behind test results.

Irregardless of their setup I’m still grateful for their work and results they produce.

I don’t understand why anyone would want to test at 1080p when it’s a high end processor designed for a minimum of 1440p, where the differences between TOP10 processors are virtually nil. It’s better to buy a cheaper processor and add to the graphics card, after all the tests are done on RTX 4090, and who can afford such a card? On weaker cards these results in 1080p will equal each other, so these tests for art.

    • @SpeedDaemon3
    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:58am

It is still misleading, as in if a regular person with 7800x3d and a 4090 would buy a 9800x3d it would absolutly throw money out the window for no improvment as nearly no one with a 4090 will ever play in 1080p in the near future. 0-1 fps improvment in 4k. And I know people that did the switch already as in europe was quite easy to buy.

    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:58am

First of all, as always I bow to Steve’s work. Doing all those benchmarks aint done in an afternoon exactly. Sure the computer does most of the work, but..still.
Now with the praise out of the way, I must say I was disappointed with this video. I honestly hoped this would be a test at higher than 1080p resolution. YES, I know why reviewers are stubborn with 1080 or even 720p in CPU benchmarks. But the majority of gamers, dont actually give a f-ck how well a CPU runs in a resolution most of us haven’t even TOUCHED in half decade.
Seriously, say a CPU has an uplift of 15% in a game compared to whatever older CPU. Cool, but that’s for 1080p, a resolution not many even touch today. Sure it shows the CPU’s potential. But that’s it, *best case scenario*. What if those 15% uplift in 1080p, is nothing but 1-2% in 1440p+ ? That’s a very scewed message people get.
It’s what these companies does, not what ‘reviewers’ should do. AMD/Intel/Nvidia will obviously throw numbers at us, taken from the very best scenario. 20% uplift !!! Wow people say, and goes out to buy the cpu, start playing, and the uplift is nothing, maybe 4% at best. Because they dont play in effing 1080p.
I personally dont want to rely on OTHER reviewers to get ACTUAL facts. Me and most proper gamers, dont play in 1080p, hence how a component performs in 1080p is irrelevant. REAL world examples/tests are better. You’re so picky when it comes to synthetic benchmarks, because they dont represent ‘real world’ . Yet built-in benchmarks at least gives you an IDEA of the performance as you test it in a resolution that people actually use. So it’s kinda funny how built-in benchmarks and 3dmark etc is a no-no because it’s not “real world”, but you insist on using 1080p for custom gaming benchmarks, when fewer and fewer people actually play in 1080p. Who is these reviews/tests for? People playing on a 10yr old laptop? Doubt they’re interested in these cpu’s as they’re on a laptop..
At least J2C promised he would make a 1440p+ tests soon for us. Now THAT sort of benchmark is MORE honest and interesting.
Feels like these reviews are as full of BS as the words from the companies themselves. Look, 21% uplift in Starfield, wooow, what a cool CPU, you MUST BUY IT. Then you play games in 1440p or even 4K, and you get gains of maybe 4%. Talk about a letdown and feeling fooled – buy ‘honest’ reviewers.
Yes you can repeat it til the day we die why you use 1080p, it still is a terrible reasoning. Yes higher resolution is more GPU bound, but that’s the resolution people actually play. in. Even if you can’t show off the new fun CPU with 21% uplift, maybe at 1440p the new cpu might increase the 1% low etc, that’s a number that isn’t completely pointless either.
Seeing a CPU performing 10-20% better in a game at 1080p, really, REALLY is of no interest, unless you also show 1440p as well.
Realize that not everyone knows everything while watching this, someone might see these graphs, noticing “wooow, 21% in Starfield compared to 7800x3d gotta buy this ASAP”(not sure why anyone would waste money going from 7800x3d to 9800x3d) so they run out, buy the CPU, but being a bit ‘slow’ between their ears, they dont realize until they’ve been playing on the new CPU for a while, that “hm, I barely see any improvements, did the reviewers lie? is something wrong in my cpu?”, failing to realize THEY are playing the games at 1440/2160p and not 1080p.
It’s like buying a new house, they show you the house when the weather is really nice, the trees, grass etc is green, birds chirping, everything looks like paradise. You are impressed, you buy the house for your family. Come fall and winter, everything looks like a scene from Fallout, long gone are the paradise look you saw when you bought the house. Because you only saw the house in the summer. But just as people play on higher res than 1080p, you didnt have a clue that the landscape around the house would change THAT much from season to season. You feel tricked, late fall/autumn, and it looks like your house is placed in a landfill or apocalyptic world. Dont you wish now that you had seen at least pictures of what the area looks like during autumn and winter too? Well you can’t, because the real estate agents ONLY want to show you it during the summer because those images looks the best – even if it’s totally NOT ‘the real world’ as the real world actually change seasons. Just as we dont play in 1080p..
I personally played a game at 1080p, around 2010 that’s honestly the last time I played ANY game in 1080p. I dont play CSGO, or Fortnite, I play actual games, where you DONT want some shitty 1080p graphics. Who buys Wukong, or Cyberpunk, to play it in 1080 or 720p even?
Though I know Steve wont have time or interest in reading this entire comment, but this had to be said. Because sometimes I feel certain ‘reviewers’ are stuck in their way, thinking they DO know the best, just because they run benchmarks five million times every week. That honestly means sh-t to be honest. I too can start benchmarks on a few PCs and let them run, that doesnt turn me into a computer genius. I, and most people care about REAL WORLD data, not some data that would’ve been interested ten years ago – aka 1080p.
Not a single review about this new CPU, tells me if THIS new cpu is worth a buy or not for ME and most other people. Again, because we dont play games at 1080p. I know that much, that performance in 1080p aint even close to the performance of the cpu in 1440 or 4k. And that’s why these reviews are really POINTLESS. Because it doesnt tell me if it’s worth a buy or NOT. For example, I sit with an Alder Lake cpu, still, I dunno if I will actually notice ANY improvements on my gaming with 9800x3d. Because all the damn numbers are for 1080p.

But to be fair, maybe Steve gets around to do AT LEAST 1440p comparisons before the end of the year. I know that 4K especially is rather pointless for CPU comparison. But at the same time, it’s not. You’re not as CPU bound (mostly) in 4K or 1440p, especially 4K, but it still gives people an actual data point that is TRUE and *REAL WORLD*. Because again, say it with me, most people dont play at 1080p, and tests made in that resolution is waste of time. All this work Steve put into these ..at least two, videos with 9800x3d, are just waste of time for most gamers. And it kinda makes me sad, because I want to also enjoy Steve’s hard work, I dont want Steve to spend days like a maniac doing benchmarks and tests, and then not even caring about the work he did. But if Hardware Unboxed is gonna stick with ONLY 1080p, I’ll give up on this channel for tests, and return once they realize 1080p really doesn’t tell us any real truths..

I get why you test with a 4090 to show the max possible perofrmance for a chip. But if I’m never going to get a 4090 (unless they become more reasonably priced), what I want to see is at what point does a certain CPU become a waste of money. If I have a 3070Ti or any current mid level card, what CPU do I really need to have before I start leaving performance on the table that I’ll never use. A lot of people are still rocking 1080Ti out there I bet. What would be nice is a video benching performance based on GPUs from 1080Ti up to 4080 with a line up of CPUs at all price points.

Steve, will you be able to test the 7950x3d, 9950x and 9950x3d with process lasso?

Using reserved CPU sets to allocate all background processes to 1 ccd, and using affinity specifically for games to allocate to the better ccd/x3d ccd.

Theocratically this will make the 7950x3d and 9950x3d just a 7800x3d/9800x3d that have 0 background process running on x3d core.

And I know individual game coding matters as well but it would be nice to know if some game engines prefer the X3D CPUs more than others.

I know why CPU benchmarking is done the way it is done. But I remain in disagreement. Benchmarks should be representative of how people actually are going to use the CPUs in the real world rather than selected to best show the pure CPU performance . And at this price range, that’s mostly people playing at 1440p and 4k.

Here to show that CPU performance is multifactorial, nonlinear and _absolutely not_ easy to predict by looking at a spreadsheet and past data. Nothing beats actual & reliable data from benchmarks like HUB’s!

Can you guys include like a 5-10s slide in the future, with a bigger list of games at 1440p and like a 4070ti/7800xt for a “real world scenario” (can just say “just for info, included 1440p data”)? I know it would be more GPU bound at that resolution, but still would be nice too see if there is a need to upgrade, since no1 uses 1080p anymore. At least not casual single player gamers, that don’t play valorant at 720p stretched on low settings.

    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:58am

It is a little disappointing that all this comparison work does not mention power consumption at all.
10 or even 20% performance improvement, for what seems to be typically a 60% power consumption increase, is not worth it for me.
And the main reason AMD chose that power level, is because “same performance at 40% less power” got roundly slammed by every reviewer of 9xxx series.
I wish there’d be some “frames per Watt” graphs. Because I do pay the electricity bill, and it adds up over time, never going away. Unlike the one-off purchase price.

One example is when I retired my Dell IPS monitor from 2008, after 8 years reliable service. Not because it was broken, but because it used 120W, and the LED replacement used 30W. It was like I turned off a 90W light bulb, for the entire time my PC was running (typically 8 to 12 hours per day).
My monthly power bill dropped by 20%, showing just how much of my household power consumption was being burned by that monitor.
I’m just trying to show that power consumption IS important, such that fps is not the be all and end all of purchase considerations.

If gamers all had unlimited funds, we’d all have 4090’s and top end rigs. But we do not, so why is the running cost ignored when the purchase price is highlighted? Especially so in these days of high energy prices.

Great review, was waiting for the massive 45 games benchmark of the new 9800X3D compared to the previous generation gaming king.
I do have one suggestion. I know this may not apply to all Fortnite players but a vast majority of them play the game in performance mode, as it is a competitive Esports title, seeking every last FPS. So, it would be very helpful, seeing Fortnite testing using performance mode (at 1080p or 1440p), alongside the regular DX12 benchmarks.
Also, for performance mode testing, I would recommend to test the performance in a build match or tournament, if possible, as that would best showcase if it’s worth upgrading, as the performance is greatly reduced in a tournament, where there may be 30-50 players alive in the final zones.

I really wish techtubers would do more “realistic” tests on CPUs. Yes, using the RTX 4090 shows the MAXIMUM potential of the CPU. But how many people playing at 1080P is going to be rocking a 9800X3D and 4090? Show the differences using a 4060, or whatever the most populat GPU is on Steam (3060 Ti). And do tests at 4K and 1440P on the RTX4090 for enthusiasts and high end gamers. The current method of testing is next to useless for actual consumers when it comes to looking for information on whether to upgrade their current CPU

Seems like that in some games, even in 1080p high settings the 4090 is bottlenecking and limiting – the 9800X3D.
    – Star Wars Outlaws – is an unoptimazed pice of shit, shoudnt be even in the games test list.

What I found amazing is the performance in Stellaris simulation time in Gamer Nexus video. For people that plays that game is a no brainer upgrade. Huge improvements that translates into wasting much less time waiting for the game to process things and actually playing.

We’d really like to see 5800X3D

DON’T run the 285K benchmarks, until Intel releases a fix. Otherwise you’d have to run them again after the fix.
Please instead run 1440p and 4K benchmarks for this and include the 7800x3D and 5800x3D, so that people can know real world gaminfg use case performance. And 5800x3D owners can know if it’s worth to upgrade. Thanks.

Even so I understand the test methodology with low Resolutions, I think it is good that for example Techpowerup tests in 2k and 4k. So the user can actually see, that in more realistic settings for high end PCs, the upgrade to the 9800X3D makes much less sens coming from allready strong CPUs

    • @thornstrikesback
    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:58am

Most of us totally understand why these tests need to be done at 1080p. We are just saying it would be nice to see the 1440p and 4K results as well. Yes, we know the differences will be minimal, but its always nice to see my 7800X3D against the latest CPU at 1440p and see that there is only 1 fps difference, just to reassure me that i dont need to upgrade.

1080p gets a bit long in the tooth with all that expensive hardware (4090, 7800x3d++). You would then opt for a (much) better monitor, unless you are into e-sports.

    • @coffee7180
    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:58am

    why not in 720p?
i am sure that the 4090 isn´t enough, Edit: you should start benching games in 720p, because the majority of gamers use DLSS and DLSS 1440p quality is 960p, DLSS 1080p quality is rendering the game in 720p.

I’m sure this will be invaluable information for the pros, or wannabe pros who are likely to spend this much money on a CPU and game at 1080p. But completely useless for the other 99% of viewers.

No one spending this much money on a CPU is gaming at 1080p.

I get why you benchmark like this but just remember who you’re actually making videos for. You could have benchmarked a 3rd of the games or half of the games and used resolutions that people who are sending 500 bucks on a CPU actually game at.

All you need to do is ask yourself 2 questions.

    1. Who is this product targeted at?
    2. Is the information in our review applicable to the target audience?

It’s considered common knowledge amongst the community that at a certain point its not particularly CPU or GPU limited, but rather that memory has the most impact. I personally am going to be upgrading from a 5950X to a 9800X3D and know that DDR5 will be a game changer, but i’d love to know the difference between the 7/9800X3D CPU’s purely to see the impact the new layout has in regards to memory.

    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:58am

Sooo Stev-o, where’s the comparison with your beloved 5800X3D?😉😋

Great stuff on the 7800X3D, but I’m thinking about switching from the 5800X3D to either the 9800X3D or 9950X3D.
I mainly game and develop photos on that PC. Which gives me a bit unusual mainboard requirements (1 PCIe x16 (no split to 8x/8x), 4 m.2 slots, 1 PCIE x1 slot for the soundcard, 6x SATA or 4+1 PCIE x1 for a SATA controller card, 2.5 Gbit/s LAN, an available x4 slot for later upgrades would be great, sound is no factor (SB AE-5 Plus will take care of it.) USB 4.0 would be nice for future card readers, but no resl requirement).

Good stuff on keeping MSFS2020, as it’s one of the few Flightsims tested, I mainly play DCS, WT and Falcon BMS, but you can extrapolate from it quite well from MSFS2020.

DCS is a good very cpu limited game to Benchmark.

And it’s good that ACC is still used as it a good data point for simracers.

May I have a suggestion for the next video with 14900K? Everybody knows these CPUs have a problem with degradation and that the problem is strongly connected to extreme frequencies these CPUs run at. Microcode update alone may not be a sufficient fix. People may want to run these CPUs frequency limited to 5.0/4.0 GHz to get some useful life from their original or replacement CPUs. Could you please test the 14900K with these frequency limits in place as well?

I think this is the ideal scenario – people that have a 7800x3d do not have to upgrade in order to keep up, while people that come from older platforms have a solid reason to upgrade now (even though the 5700x3d is also still very relevant!)

    • @speancer

I think you guys need to do some 4070/4080s benchmarks as well… i’m sure that the rest of us with the mentioned. I mean, for those 0.1% of ppl that has 4090 is relevant, but the others(me) that just ordered 9800x3D with 4080s (cpu still has the come) might be interested in other gpus than the peak gaming gpu. I really appreciate the effort you put into comparing the CPUs. But I guess I can subtract 20-30% of what you show there.

    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:59am

There is absolutely 0 point in doing 1080p CPU benchmarks with RTX 4090. Nobody with a 4090 will play in 1080p.
CPU reviews exist to reflect real-life use cases in order to help the consumers. Doing those hypothetical 1080p tests is pointless for the consumer. The differences between CPUs at 1080p will be drastically higher than at 1440p and 4K.

    • @ImWillyDS
    • 2024年 11月 12日 9:59am

I love the comparison in X670E for both 7800X3D and 9800X3D, which is a realistic approach for regular people if they want to upgrade the CPU without replacing the mobo and the RAM.
For the next el Clasico of 7800X3D vs 9800X3D, maybe you could make it at ‘their best foot forward’?
    Like 9800X3D with 8000MHz RAM and X870 versus 7800X3D with 6000MHz CL30 and X670E?
It’s definitely unrealistic approach for actual consumer, but I’m interested to see in AMD’s ideal approach, how much gain if we do a very new build with a whole latest parts

I’ve always felt like CPU benchmark should be focused on futureproofing a potential future GPU bottleneck. i see (almost) no point in testing games that are currently GPU limited. it should always be about how fast the cpu can be, because it WILL show those performance gains more and more in the future.
