I dont understand the downplay pf the creation engine as like the thing that kills bethesda games nowadays. The engine is fine, Starfield’s BASIC gameplay isnt the issue or problem. The problem is the barebones story, lack of interesting quests and content

you can do the exact thing in unreal, it makes no sense to say this is a viable reason or a reason at all.

This isn’t even exclusive to Creation Engine, it’s the Havok Physics Engine, which is licensed out to other engines. their site links to the Unreal and Unity Engines’ Havok plugins .

Another reason: it is extremely accessible to modders. Case in point: 95% of mods on Nexus is for a game running on this engine… out of, like, 3000 games they hold mods for…

Let’s stop pretending the issue is the engine. The Fallout London team proved a good experience can be made in this engine. The problem was Bethesda’s design priorities and lack of creativity. They could switch to Unreal 5 tomorrow and it wouldn’t make any difference if they had the same writing team and design leads.

What Bethesda needs is new talent with fresh ideas.

Bethesda is a multi billion dollar company owned by a trillion dollar tech company. Should there even have to be a compromise?

We’re literally catching rockets in midair now, but we can’t have a optimized creation engine?

    • @WeakestAvenger
    • 2024年 10月 19日 9:56pm

Haven’t played Starfield yet, but the interactivity with the world is something I love about the Elder Scrolls games. Taking that away in favor of fewer loading screens doesn’t quite balance out for me.

    • @regular-user
    • 2024年 10月 19日 9:56pm

This has literally NOTHING to do with their Creation Engine. This is literally is most, if not all, game engines. It’s basic physics features that components have in game engine. For example, I develop games in Unity and I can do the exact same thing in Unity by simply adding a ridigbody and a collider component + a script for the logic where I control the gravity to make it floaty”.

It has ZERO to do with the Creation Engine.

    • @Ishaan_A
    • 2024年 10月 19日 9:56pm

Can’t you do that in other engines as well though? I think UE5 should be more optimized in simulating smooth physics easily, especially an engine like RAGE that RDR2 uses, it simulates physics very well.

    • @httzc
    • 2024年 10月 19日 9:56pm

why does it have a zero sum game?
why cant Bethesda develop a next gen engine built on the back on the existing creation engine code.
If they started work on it when Starfield first started development, they could have had it finished alongside the game.
They were just being lazy.Seems like most at Bethesda dev team including senior management had the notion of ‘Thats good enough’ while falsely hyping up the game as the next best thing in gaming.

i dont mind a load screen if its not too long and what it loads is worth loading. why would you waste my time loading garbage with no lore no game play value and no objective benefit. atmospheric items can be static. it wont make me cry if i cant pick up a wad of crumpled paper. bit if you put an animal in a game and dont allow the option to pet it ill say its a garbage game.

    • @rubrfox
    • 2024年 10月 19日 9:56pm

There is no point to blaming the tools for poor craftsmanship. Since they have access to the source code of the engine, they can put anything they want into the game. If they wanted a seamless experience, they would design the feature and put it in. If they don’t care to, they wouldn’t waste the time. If they didn’t think it was important enough to utilize it in their own engine, why would they bother implementing it with someone else’s engine.

If they didn’t think it was important to implement seamless atmosphere to space flight like in No Man’s Sky, it wouldn’t change by putting the game in Unreal. If they didn’t think it was important to stitch rooms together for a seamless building traversal, it wouldn’t change if it was in Unity. Etc.

Something funny to note. Creation engine is capable of creating a seamless world. If you play Skyrim or Fallout 4, the player is allowed to walk from one corner of the map to the other. It does this by loading the area a player is expected to go, once the player gets close. Then it unloads the areas that the player gets too far away from. This is why you sometimes get pop-in when you traverse the map, it is the world loading into existence around the player. However, their game designers only use this feature for the larger open world, not the cities, buildings, or dungeons. It made sense to only do this for the larger areas back when games were played off of HDDs and systems used small amounts of memory. However, now they are not restrained by the slow read speeds of HDDs or the size limitations of previous RAM. So they could use the predictive area loader for small areas, but they don’t. That would require placing rooms inside buildings and stitching all the environments together. Sometimes rooms or dungeons don’t fit inside the buildings or caves they were planned for. It would take a lot of effort to fit square pegs in square holes. So they just plaster a loading screen over it and move on.

    • 2024年 10月 19日 9:56pm

Modders have found ways to make drivable vehicles, jets, and rideable horses in the GAMEBRYO engine and hundreds of other ground breaking mods for other Bethesda games. If Bethesda hired some of these genius modders to work on their engine, i bet they can figure out how to keep the physics while removing majority of loading screens

    • @solusvael1798
    • 2024年 10月 19日 9:56pm

The main issue is, theres no point in having the junk physicalized. Oh yeah you can pickup 1000 sandwiches, 5000 spools of wire, or desktop fans/radios. But over over half the stuff is just that junk, stuff you can’t do anything with. At least in Fallout 4 or 76 you can break it down to make stuff. In Starfield you cant, theres no need to have so much stuff in-game doing nothing.

    • @headshot531
    • 2024年 10月 19日 9:56pm

    • @evanrutledge-sz4yo
    • 2024年 10月 19日 9:56pm

Thing is other modern engines can do this exact same thing (to my knowledge). Sure this is impressive, but when the engine sucks and doing basically everything else, what’s the point in being able to stack sandwiches?

    • @ZeusTheGodSoA
    • 2024年 10月 19日 9:56pm

Yay, a bunch of useless junk no one actually asks for. It is COOL to see that, but does it justify the things you mentioned? Hell no. If that’s their actual reasoning? Their priorities are backwards.

    • @GladeRiven
    • 2024年 10月 19日 9:56pm

The other main reason: Bethesda OWNS the Creation Engine, since they bought the Gamebryo engine outright back in the 90s. This means they don’t have to pay royalties to use the engine, like they would have to with Unreal. Since Bethesda games have a long shelf life, that’s millions of dollars over decades they get to keep.

    • @DedicatedAngler
    • 2024年 10月 19日 9:56pm

I just think that even if they deliver good gameplay they’ve now shown that they can’t deliver a good narrative or good unique world. They need to stay in the confines of the elder scrolls and Fallout where people smarter and more creative than them have invented actual good worlds 😂

    • @Timmeck
    • 2024年 10月 19日 9:56pm

I was always a fan of Beth’s physical items, in FO3/4 where u can drop your guns, armors or even small junk items or a part of your brain which got cut out of your Charakter in a mission. All these things was memories and I placed them in my houses megaton or self built bases in FO4. For me, the loading screens are not the problem, for me, it’s the problem what u get after a loadingscreen, in fo3/4 you was receiving a hand made unique dungeon/bunker etc where you enjoyed to be, scavenging the place, uncover prewar science/military experiments which may had a terrible outcome. All of this was it worth to wait and look at a loading screen. In starfield you had to many nonsense loadingscreen where u knew, “it’s probably another bunker which I saw on 20 other planets”. Heck, I even ignored locations which I saw far away in the distance, cos I knew, it’s probably a procedural building which I already saw dozens of time. And this is for me a terrible downer in a beth game, I always roamed through the wastelands and was willing to discover and see every place in this world, starfield failed in this case massively

    • @FullMetalB
    • 2024年 10月 19日 9:56pm

Then Todd comes out and says “you don’t have to pick up/interact with everything! Just ignore it!” So it’s the main reason you use the creation engine, and the creation engine is the main reason bethesda games are so outdated….and people should just ignore the reason it’s still used. Makes total sense!

Completely ignores the whole morning scene that surround their games and is one of the pillars that they work off of at this point and how moving to day unreal give completely nukes everything people have learned about how to mod their games for literally two decades at this point

    • @thegamingtruckdriver
    • 2024年 10月 19日 9:56pm

    • @Variapolis
    • 2024年 10月 19日 9:56pm

I feel like modding is a very strong point to miss, as Unreal Engine 5 has pretty shit modding support as the UGC plugin which is the primary way mods are supported, isn’t maintained by Epic for UE5. The only moddable alternative at the moment would be Unity unless Bethesda made their own tools for UE5 which would be a cumbersome process.

It’s fun to idealize Unreal Engine but you need to take into account it’s drawbacks too. I think they should have focused on implementing a seamless procedural generation system, maybe worked on Elder Scrolls 6 first so they could get the Global Illumination and stuff done while keeping the loading screens, and then have enough time to upgrade the generation model so that they can have full seamless planets, etc after ES6.

Either way, the writing still sucks and that’s not a game engine issue.

    • @Scott.webb64
    • 2024年 10月 19日 9:56pm

Its also because of its modability. It has a 20+ year fan base that’s familiar with how to mod stuff. If they went to UE5, it would kill that trained group they know will keep their games alive through modding.

Things like this help add to game. Yes it’s small and doesn’t really matter if the game sucks, but it shows talent.

I never played Starfield nor it’s dlc but I have heard they weren’t received great (especially the dlc) but had some great elements that needed optimizations and more quality content surrounding it.

TLDR: It’s a tech demo of a great game.

    • 2024年 10月 19日 9:56pm

I’d rather have TES and Fallout maps back than any of thousand empty planets that Starfield can bring if you have to deal with a loading screen every time. A new engine would be a good thing because the bugs are just getting way too noticeable with each new game. The writing isn’t getting any better so at least give us an actual up to date experience with an engine that can take advantage of our hardware and load a game faster or deal with little to no loading.

It likely won’t happen but if Bethesda isn’t going to change their games then Microsoft at least has to step in and allow other studios to take a shot of off-shoot games for their more popular series.
