I also love how some npcs in cyberpunk will run up to catch up with you if you run ahead. It’s not consistent tho and I wish every character did that. But it’s still amazing. Cyberpunk is one of the best games ever made

In Starfield’s defense, it is possible to walk at the same speed as the NPC without running, but it is very difficult to find the right point in the analog between running and walking. 😂

Few games do this and it is *so frustrating* because if you’re in a roleplaying or open world game it would be common sense to move at the same pace as the NPC you’re following or walking besides!

Cyberpunk, Red Dead 2, and Witcher 3 (unsurprisingly another CDPR game) all did this magnificently.
That was introduced in Witcher 3, ur a little late.
We just need to bully Todd Howard into stepping down. He has ruined Bethesda and every game series they have. Fallout 5 is going to be a mess, elder scrolls 2 is going to be a nightmare. These once beloved games aren’t worth being excited for anymore just because of the worthless game studio behind them.
They need to stop having following npcs around in the game and just make it a fucken cutscene i absolutely hate following npcs around its the worst

The Final Fantasy 7 Re games make you slow down to the NPCs speed and I hate that so much. To me, It feels worse than walking at different speeds. But to make it even worse, they’ll sometimes slow you down to the point that the npc walks faster than you and has to stop for you to catch up!!!

I started playing cyberpunk recently and it has a lot of potential but a super crappy game engine. Starfield feels pretty much the same, but the difference is that Bethesda have been doing this same thing for 20

I prefer normal walking speed (scenario driven) in Starfield, especially in 3rd person, but I cannot STAND how short/sensitive the transition is from that, to full-on sprint. It feels like walking only gets a millimeter of travel on the stick, and it drives me insane.

In CrossCode, you go at the same speed as all other NPC’s, and you can use your dash to catch up if you were slow for some reason.
If a game’s default “hold w” speed is faster than the walking speed of the NPCs, there should be a dedicated “toggle walk” button that changes your movement speed to the speed of the NPCs.
The speeds dont match up in witcher 3 and it drove me so nuts i quit playing lol
Hitman needs this i swear. You walk naturally faster than everyone which is fine, but when you have a key dedicated to walking slower for NPC’s but its SLOWER than their walk speed, you constantly end up switching between the two.

One of the reasons why I love controllers for single player games like cyberpunk. If i push the joystick forward a little bit, i walk slow. A bit more, i walk fast. All the way, light jog. Click it down, full sprint. On keyboard its W for go forward, hold N to walk at only one speed, and shift for full sprint. Controllers are much better for immersion and dont hinder gameplay unless you really suck with a controller.

Walking speed based on game variables like carry-weight and physical attributes? You can run to catch-up, but there’s no real in-between. It would be a handy to have a follow feature, though. Hold E to follow or something. This would make a popular mod.
It really is the little things
CDPR has that issue dealt with. In the Witcher, the NPC matches your speed, in Cyberpunk, so as to not mess up the cinematics, you match the NPC speed.
Also noticed that running will also prompt the NPC to instead move faster to keep up with you.

There’s actually a specific key bind for this (g by default I think) where you can go the “cinematic” speed
And if you press the button for walking, you become a snail while it is active.

CDPR has always done this. In The Witcher 3, its actually the other way and the NPCs follow your speed so it is easy to keep up with them. If you run they start to run too.

They did something similar in RDR2 (I don’t know about 1 cause I haven’t tried it yet) where if you focus on your buddy and hold your running button you match their pace

This happens when you walk behind an NPC. If you go past them and run, most of the time the NPC will also run to your location if you’re already at the objective.
In shadows of war you can run and the npcs run with you. So good.

Guessing the way that works is if your hitbox and his are within a certain radius then your acceleration is set to the same float or double or whatever type they chose. Also guessing that shift key would override it. They might also have something to require you to be pointing/moving in the same direction.
Cyberpunk also allows you to catch up to the npc if they go too far, but the second you get close enough you slow back down. They wanted this game to be a genuine masterpiece but they never really got to finish it.

The problem is when this gets bugged and becomes permanent. I got this right after this quest, and I can’t walk fast, though I can just run. If I go into “walk” mode with the key, I move so slow I barely move at all.
Well i B-hop which lets me go faster, and then the NPC’s run to catch up with me 😅 speeds up the process nicely 🤣🤣

The difference here is they slow your character down and force you to go at the NPC’s speed rather than making the NPC go at your normal speed. It happens quite often in this game when following NPC’s on missions. You can run up to them, but it will slow you down and force you to go at their speed. Some love this, some hate it.
I never have this problem because I just slow down to match their pace #consolegamer

I couldnt get theough the game. To much following NPCs, boring dialogue and every mission and shootout felt the same. Pretty boring game in my opinion. They soent so much time and effort on shit that 99.9% percent of players will never bother with or notice.
Also, at some points of the game, if you sprint, the leading npc also starts sprinting

I didn’t really care for it in Starfield.
Even better was Shadow of Mordor with it’s approach about following npcs. You just walked close to them and your character started following them on their own.
One thing I adored about GTAV and the likes. You can immerse yourself that much more by “blending in” with the world itself

Whats interesting is this only happens in Starfield if youre using mouse and keyboard, since you cant granularly adjust movement speed, its either on or off. On controller you can move at whatever speed you want to adjust for the NPC.

It’s always weird with NPC speeds. I get that you dont want them to leave the player but its painful running past them then awkwardly waiting.
Worst one made the NPC juuuust a bit slower then my characters walk speed and put an invisible wall up so you couldnt overtake.
… It also made it so tilting the analogue stick a little bit was full walking speed… nothing breaks emerson more then awkwardly stop starting walking.
Either you walk faster asked need to stop, or you walk slower so when you get too far behind, the NPC stops and complains while waiting you or you can suddenly run and abruptly stop once you reach the minimum distance again.
If you sprint they start sprinting too 🙂

I played Cyberpunk 2077 (the first part) in July. Then Starfield. Then went back to play the new expansion for Cyberpunk.
Starfield sucked in comparison in every way.
The irony – I was hyped af for Starfield and expected to hate Cyberpunk from day one. Cyberpunk is just a banger and delivered 100%.
You can start to run in these kind of missions and the NPC just books it while fluttering his/her limbs around 😂

If you sprint the NPC your following will sprint too. Which is really great for multiple playthroughs

Even if you regularly walk faster out of these types of follows, you should be follow-locked at a speed when they happen. I find it so frustrating when you have to feather and finesse the stick so you don’t trample the NPC, or make these _stupid_ moments take longer than they have to!

It is completely absurd that Starfield can’t handle having NPCs walk at the same speed as your character. They literally just need to boost the NPC speed slightly to match the player’s speed.

GUYS! Who here remembers Bulletstorm where the game had a mechanic that would make your teammates sprint at the same speed as you whenever you hit the sprint button? This game is so old and i will never forget how this little mechanic made the game feel so ahead of its time.
Assassin’s creed did it pretty well. The npcs matches your sped when you went faster or slower.

I also like the fact in some scenarios in Cyberpunk where you have to follow a character, you can actually run and it will make the npc you need to follow run and get to places faster, just expect to miss short dialog here and there.

Did you know that if you run ahead in this game, most NPCs will run to catch up to you? The only exceptions are when an NPC is holding an object, or during the Johnny sequences. You can actually speed up a lot of the walking sections this way.
They also don’t run when they have interactable dialogue. But you can usually use the skip ahead feature in those cases.

Favorite feature in Ghost of Tsushima. NPC speed is matched to ypurs and on horseback if you sprint they’ll match even the sprint speed
Also another trick in cyber punk is to use the right mouse button to slightly zoom without anything equipped and you will walk through areas good for cut scenes and scripted moments like this

Even did a search to why it never matched, apparently in Skyrim the base speed is based on your character’s height 🤦♂️ and is there something less immersive than a follower just doing a bunch a sprints and stops?

Ac Valhalla made it so the npc you follow will match your speed but slightly faster so if you’re walking it’ll walk in front of you if you then start sprinting it’ll start sprinting as well to stay at the perfect distance ahead of you
It made sense for the walking speed in games like skyrim where when you’re pverencumbered for the locked walking speed to be slow. Starfield though? Why does the player walk slower than the NPCs? The overcumbering system only drains stamina for not walking

This feature is *barely* implemented in the game, and is more infuriating than it’s worth.
Their speed isn’t based off of your distance to them, so you can and will very quickly fall behind / be ahead of them depending on pathing. The sprint function also only works *some* of the time.
Sure, Starfield is aggravating, but this isn’t a shining example of the t simple mention.
This was great but I didn’t like how they were in front of you trying to 180 turn their head to speak to you.

They need this and/or a setting that is a “potential immersion-ruin” setting where u can run and the NPC will run too, since most of these walks are either dialog dumps (which is fine for half of Cyberpunk) or just tedious walks (like the other half of cyberpunk or Starfield)

You wouldn’t have that problem with a controller. You can control how fast you’re moving by pushing the stick with a certain amount of force. On a keyboard, you only have one speed, and that’s it.
The problem is if you go the same speed as the NPC and move left or right at all you slowly start to lag behind. That’s why the modern solution is to eventually have the NPC wait for you if you get too far away.

bare in mind that even in 1.6, this did not work reliably at all in Cyberpunk 2077 and was not present at release. The first few story missions had it, and then it bizarrely disappeared.

It’s not consistent, but most of the time it seems to work. I think it depends on the nature of the cutscene.

I shall take pride for this, I made the Natural Walking Speed mod and it has roughly 27k unique downloads, that’s enough for CDPR to notice that MANY people want to walk at a more Natural Walking Speed to keep in line with NPCs

There’s more than one speed for walk and I can do it regularly now but in between the walk and run animation on the left stick there’s a spot that speeds up walking to match them, experiment with the left stick and you’ll see

The thing is, speed in bethesda games is influenced by skills and races, sometimes more depending on which game. In order to have this work the tallest race and shortest would have to have the same speed even if the short race had heavy and the tall was naked and that would suck.

I think auto follow should be mandatory. It should basically be an in game cutscene since you MUST follow the NPC to progress, there is no freedom of choice so no point in having freedom of movement.

If you walk, you walk faster. If you CapLck you walk slower. There is no in-between.

All you need is gamepad and push stick on about half of total angle and your hero will walk slower. Its in every game with gamepad.

It’s fascinating how long we have come from Cyberpunk literally not working on any console or PC back in 2020 to fully released game in 2023
Then there’s Starfield yeah it might be same generic Bethesda game but I have system that ran Cyberpunk in 2020 and the best thing it was I could run Starfield on launch albeit at 30-32 fps but never crashed as opposed to Cyberpunk which crashed on every system
You can walk the same speed but it’s like a very very small spot between walking and jogging it near impossible to get right which is ridiculous

This game is a 4/10 and I finished it + the dlc.
Okay hear me out, im working on a variable walking speed system on mouse&keyboard using the mouse wheel to select your speed while still using WASD to move.
Then if you need to move quickly in an instant you hit sprint, which i have other ideas for how to rework/expand.
Currently looking into how to get this idea in Fallout 4, any suggestions or further idea are welcome!
I noticed that cyberpunk doesn’t just do this, they scale your speed depending on your distance from the target. If they get too far ahead, you move full speed.

In the witcher 3, you sprint and the NPC youre following on a quest will also run full sprint ahead of you.

This was a major turn off for me starfield wise. I really, really, really, wanted to love the game. I loved Skyrim I’ve played it so many fucking times. And I love a lot about starfield.
But there’s just too many immaturities about starfield that just break my immersion. And the walking speed not matching NPC’s, when there’s so many quests where the NPC just says follow me or some shit and now I have to just speed up and slow down it just takes me right out the moment. Breaks my immersion.
Call me a baby, call me hard to impress, but I don’t think so. I’m actually very easy to impress, I play all my video games high as fuck so I’d say I’m very easy to impress and stimulate… but certain things like that just completely shatter my immersion.

One thing Starfield does better though is camera controls and vehicle handling. Like it felt natural to fly a ship and I got really good at thruster turning, then in Cyberpunk I can’t fucking drive straight and the camera refuses to follow me mid turn.

old new but to my rather limited knowledge if most games from 2002-2017.(did not have access to games and such growing up) born 98. anyways, Ghost of Tsushima the npc’s matched your speed. you run, they run, you ride your horse they ride theirs’s. I think there was a few missions where you had to walk at their pace not to many. And you did in fact go the same speed during such missions.

I actually hate set walk speeds in games. My ADHD doesn’t enjoy being forced behind people or having my speed limited. If I want to run straight to the objective and say fu then I will. Ps. Todd kind of used this mechanic in the dawnstar deadric artifact quest. As you are following the priest of mara if you get too far ahead of him he will just stop and not move so you have to pace yourself and walk with him because he’s giving the most boring back story of vermina priests … ugh nerd am I right.
