It’s so existential and so sad… It’s still such a bright story about happy memories and fights and family. As someone who never really grew up with a family, the family that was completely broken apart and shattered, I really really felt that this game fit with me. I still play it sometimes when I feel sad and lonely. It just helps. A game like this, locked in a place of grief, is so unforgettable.

I have probably played through this game 4 or 5 times, it’s a beautifully told story, but the cannery part hits me especially, I had an extremely similar job in a bakery where I had to make hot dog and hamburger buns and as the pans go by you have to replace missing spots or remove messy dough, but the methodical process of it for 12 hours every single day for over a month at times genuinely drove me mad, I dissociated much like the character, living out scenarios in my head, between my body giving up on me physically and mentally I abused ibuprofen and weed to get through it further pushing what was already broken, I was having to stare at the clock my entire shift because if I didn’t time never worked right, it could be hours, what felt like days, eternity even some nights, only to look up and it’s only been a few minutes, I’m only 21 but due to undiagnosed problems and not being able to know my limits I almost worked myself to death, I would imagine every night myself laying down on the conveyor and taking a ride into the oven much like how the character in the game decapitated himself with the slicer, I’ve never seen anything else properly convey how for some people what should be a 9 to 5 can feel torturous, especially those that are neurodivergent.

What Remains of Edith Finch is one of the few games I absolutely love and never wanna go back to. The game is an atmospheric, subtle, beautiful work of art. It made me cry but it also gave me this beautiful warmth. Thinking about it now tears me up. I’ve never felt such emotions from playing such a game. I played it next to my little brother and cried in front of him. It’s not a relatable game. It won’t suck you back in for multiple playthroughs and it isn’t even super fun. But I would still say it’s a 10/10. It sets out to do something very specific and nails it. Amazing game.
