Oblivion, Skyrim, and fallout 3 do in fact come to mind. Up until recently when it was improved, oblivion was a more functional RPG then Cyberpunk 2077. Skyrim was one of two games that the default was to mod it rather then the niche, the other being minecraft, which made fans flock to it to the point it still has concurrent players to this day.

Cyberpunk is great, now, but on launch it wasn’t as good.

Skyrim isn’t on that level under any stretch of the imagination. The game has had game breaking bugs since day one and in there infamously high number of re-releases and remasters they’ve never fixed them. Fallout 3 was also bad bug wise, but the writing was absolutely awful and rather than fix it they charged paid DLC for an ending that should’ve been in the game since the start.

Honestly looking back Skyrim and Starfield – aside from concept – are exactly the same game. Only thing that has changed is our expectations since I’m sure Starfield would have been an absolute banger if it released in 2011 like Skyrim. And knowing Bethesda I actually got exactly what I expected and was able to enjoy it.

Elder scrolls 6 needs to really perform to save Bethesda, it’s basically their last card to play. Sad to admit, loved skyrim and I think oblivion is one of the greatest RPGs ever made.

My take is that they would have done better if they never made elder scrolls online. We should have had elder scrolls 6 a 5+ years ago. ESO gets an expansion every year. Fallout 4 had one good expansion when it should have been three. FO76 should have been better in every regard. Starfield should have been amazing being a new IP but ESO sucked all those resources and it’s boring.

Nah fallout 4 is terrible ever since launch on consoles its had issues with not even being able to play the game when yoy download it imagine buying a game downloading it and then it crashing before you can even start up the main menu because the data got corrupted before you even make a save file then having to delete it spend more hours re downloading it hoping itll actually work and them still not having fixed the problem 10 years later

Also, the Creation Kit for Starfield hasn’t been released, so modding is limited to textures, UI changes and hardcore hacking.

STOP saying the modding community is dead for starfield. Starfield is number 12 on the Nexus in less than 6 months surpassed games like Mass Effect, GTA, The Witcher series, and many more (subnautica). The Modding Community is very alive, and if there isn’t enough mods clearly you don’t like Star Wars because there is enough mods to make an ENTIRE OVERHAUL to replace the game with Star Wars. So before you just read a media article and make a video why don’t you actually look than parrot others. Especially when the creation Kit is so close around the corner. Is starfield a massively flawed game, absolutely, mods can save it but when you have a message like this, you are persuading those few to quit the game and killing the community. I’ll say the problems I had with starfield
1. Very poor optimisation
2.Loading takes way too much time, so going back and forth for quests was a pain
3.Boring Quests, apart from the infiltration and monster hunting every other faction quest was boring
4. Human only species which made the social interactions very dull.
5.Main story was too boring.
6.Not all gear was really unique or impactful
7.Did not have the magnificent atmosphere fallout and elder scrolls have, where you just listen to background music or play radio and chill.
8. The map. Making navigation a total pain.

I can’t even touch Skyrim anymore without it being modded so much it’s unrecognizable.

Fallout 3 was a great post-apo game, that made you feel like you’re living in apocalyptic world.

Fallout 4 was like the world was covered in dust. Messed up lore, and messed up main storyline. Only good thing was Far Harbor dlc, cause that was truly amaizing. Anything else was at most “meh”.

About Fallout 76. I was one of the people that pre-ordered it. It was boring af. The only npc, beside robots, was a super mutant trader. At the end of my game I was wandering in the southern part of the map, with camp located at the only cool place on the whole map.

Nevertheless, it was damn not worth 70 euro.

Starfield. If over 50% of the game is bad, how can you expect people to like it?

Bethesdas peak was the 2000s and the early 2010s, they started going downhill when they started the paid mod bullshit and kept milking Skyrim. Fallout 4, Fallout 76 and Starfield weren’t made with any love IMO. I don’t really know how to explain it, they just feel way off compared to games like Morrowind and Oblivion.

I recently reinstalled doom 2016 and eternal. Played them about 20 minutes apiece and have concluded that somebody was extra salty with mr. Mick outing their piss poor treatment of employees because the sound design went from being crisp and clean to ruined for both games. They chose to go the route of EA on many other corporate levels too, so i wont be a customer of theirs since they hate having customers, but love their cocaine to death.

I still don’t know why many people follow these studios. Bethesda, Bioware, Blizzard – they’re shadows of their former selves with the people who made their games great having left and moved on

I like some of the concepts of Starfield but it really does feel like an engine upgrade is needed in that studio. I played it on gamepass to try it, and i dont plan on buying it or finishing it.

It’s really sad, it’s the reason why I’m worried for ES6. I hope it to be the generation’s Skyrim, so to speak. But I’ve got this funny feeling, it’ll have a lot of delays, deceptive marketing and still lagging behind in terms of technical innovations.

After Starfield I dont know if I could buy another big game from them. The most expensive game I have bought since I started pc gaming in 2019. I paid full price for the base package. Too far in for a refund. 140 hours in im done. I have a game I paid $20 for and have almost 2k hours in still play it

The video was like 4 minutes of the most mid tier, uninspired, boring stealth shooter combat with braindead AI and garbage gunplay.
Compare that to any clip of someone doing crazy combat or stealth in Cyberpunk, the difference isn’t just night and day, it’s the difference between a Bugatti Veyron and a burned out shell of a Toyota Camry in a drag race. ES6 will be ass, I promise you this.

Until they put any effort into restructuring their company for the massive scale they’re expected to operate at, I’m not going to put in the effort to play their games again

For me it comes down to who I’m excited to see the next game come out of. FromSoft could release Elden Ring DLC for the next 5 years and I’d be happier about it than GTA 6. Meanwhile Bethesda might make a banger or an overproduced turd and there’s no in between

There is not enough mods for Starfield because Creation Kit/Construction Set for Starfield isnt out yet. So all these mods were made without official programm for mods creation.

Other Japanese game studios like CAPCOM or Square Enix or SEGA are much suitable.

Fallout 4 despite it being old, is still a great game with a still active community. One of the largest FO4 mods is coming out April 24th.

Bethesda is just a relic. We talk about it a lot because of nostalgia, not due to recent performance. We wish it would change, most of us know it wont, so we hold to the childlike memories of when they made us happy.

Starfield is fun

It’s funny, because Fallout 3 and Skyrim were the two games that started this downfall if you look into it.

I think it’ll be interesting to see what kind of fire Microsoft lights under bethesda’s ass now that they are the parent company. I think we’re either going to see Bethesda start doing very well again or get their IP taken away in short order. Time will tell.

Bethesda games were charming and had janky passion poured by artists, but was always ever so slightly behind the curve.

Fallout 3 and new Vegas looked dated the moment it released, Skyrim too was not a technical showcase, fallout 4 almost reached the current standards but fell short in every aspect and fallout 76 is corporate garbage.

I think morrowind and oblivion were technically apt and the only real impressive game technically was TES2.

Yet there is just this last week 30+ realtive hq mods on Nexus alone.
There is limitations to what the modders can actually do without the tools.
Dont get me wrong you cant compare anything to Skyrim, as thats like the Michael Jordan of Bethesda games, and most likely for its decade(even now the amount of players who play it is impressive).
The modding scene for Skyrim have as you say had decade(s) to work at, but yet few games have ever been so supported I think as that one, just this last week 389 for Skyrim Special Edition on Nexus(not counting the other seperate for Oldrim etc).

I have fond memories of going to each others camps and just wrecking havoc to see how high of a camp bounty you could get, then proceeding to go into crippling debt!
I played for quite a bit and got to 600 before I finally stopped!

Fallout 4 was my first Bethesda game. I loved it at the time and then played some fallout 3 & skyrim. But those were years ago. And they’re still using the same engine. The Creation Engine needs to be put to rest. Because they’ve shown that creation engine 2 was no major improvements just bug patches and not many to begin with.

After 76 and Starfield I gave up on Beth. I had a sliver of hope and they just shoved it my eye. I trust Bethesda as much as I trust a streamer advertising a VPN as “security”.

Skyrim isn’t even on that level lol it’s a great game but it’s just dumbed down for the masses compared to the previous elder scrolls games. Narratively speaking it’s amazing but on a technical level it’s piss poor and the devs should be demoted for allowing the bugs and glitches to go on for a decade! Even the new version of it is still plagued with 10+ year old bugs and glitches they just can’t be bothered fixing when they could literally just implement a community mod into the game and fix everything with little to no effort! CD Projekt Red showed that they actually do care about their community. CP2077 was so hyped but broken at launch and not that fun that I never thought the game would actually turn out good. They promised to fix the game and implement new features and they still are doing that. It just shows that investors are the cause of failure in the gaming industry. Bethesda are just trying to please investors at this point instead of trying to make an actual fun and innovative game which will strengthen their community and in turn, make them more money. Bethesda as a publisher to me is great. I’ve always preferred the output of their side-studios and the only game from Bethesda as a developer I have really enjoyed is Fallout 3, and even then I thought it was just an okay 7/10 game.

Id Software in the meantime gave me Rage, Rage 2, DOOM(2016) and DOOM Eternal.

Machine Games gave me Wolfenstein New Order and New Colossus.

Arkane gave me Dishonored and Prey.

Tango gave me The Evil Within 1 and 2.

I can honestly say that I preferred my experience in all of these games over any game Bethesda as a dev has put out.

Fallout 3 + Skyrim + New Vegas (Not Bethesda I’m aware but still) the 3 greatest games ever made in my opinion. Every single thing they have put their hands on since has left me genuinely angry by just how utterly shit they are. Fallout 4 is dogshit it’s not okay it’s dogshit I don’t have the words to adequately explain how shit 76 is so I won’t try. I’m terrified to watch this TV show next week because it will be the final nail in Fallouts coffin.

It would be very difficult to fix Starfield with mods. Basically someone would have to make multiple large interactive areas across 4-5 planets, fill those areas with NPC’s, give some of them back stories so we can develop some sort of feelings for them, create missions for those areas and characters, fix the loading issues, overhaul the settlement building feature, fix the small sandbox issue so vehicles can be added in, and allow us to actually fly our ships. All the shit Starfield didn’t have or did a really bad job at. Good luck with that. You’re looking at 5-8 years worth of modding work which basically remakes the game.

If ES6 doesn’t end up being good I genuinely think Bethesda is going to implode and disappear from space and time. I mean, it’s their last shot. Surely. If they screw up the NEXT ELDER SCROLLS after more than a DECADE of waiting? Done. Doesn’t matter what they put out after. Todd will be stripped naked and dragged through the streets.

I hope they learned valuable lessons from Starfield. They lost sight of the main appeal of their games: exploration. The procedurally generated, fast travel-fest of Starfield left must to be desired.

id software has been the best part of bethesda for a long time, The main internal studios haven’t produced a game without decade outdated moment to moment gameplay since its inception.

I think people are harsh on 4 tbh, especially the overall package with far harbour. Overall it IS a great game just not a game changer like Skyrim.

They really shouldn’t have made 76, instead let the 76 team work on Starfield as a backburner project that focuses on space combat and changed the story to be during its war period to have all the twists and interesting story that you learned about. Instead it became a watered down boring version of Skyrim in Space.

Fallout 76 has become a fantastic game with an amazingly positive and helpful community. That game is proof that Bethesda can recognize when it made mistakes and update its games throughout their life cycle which is what people are hoping Starfield can do.

And strangely, Starfield is still one of the most played modern games. It’s a commercial success if you go outside your bubble. Betesda probably won’t feel the need for change.

Bethesda’s quality isn’t going down- it’s staying exactly the same. It’s like their frozen in time- they have been resting on their laurels. They don’t think they need to innovate so they’re attitude is “The Creation is fine. Load screens are fine. one-dimensional companions are fine”. They’re stuck in a rut that they made and refuse to get out of it. I don’t have any confidence that ES6 will be any better than Starfield. The only reason Skyrim has done as well as it has is because of modders. The MODDERS are the ones innovating.

I thought Oblivion was better than Skyrim. There I said it. I saw Skyrim as the beginning of simplification. It worked for Skyrim. They went from RPGs to adventure games. However they tried to make games for the widest audience possible, and when you make a game for everyone you make the game for nobody.

Bethesda mastered a formula (equivalent to min-maxing) of limited hardware capabilities, the developers have displayed that they became way to ignorant to what made their prior games great from having their own developer perspective of story writing as a job not a passion. They cut out detail because it was assumed “not everyone will see it” well maybe not on one playthrough but hey Starfield’s endgame is: go do it all again, very very slightly different.

Fo4 wasn’t bad but it’s more of an action rpg with settlement building than an actual rpg like new vegas (skyrim,fo3 oblivion are also lack luster compared to fnv so its just Bethesda games design lacking depth in the rpg part of the game). Fallout 76 wasn’t ready but the game is atleast complete and runs fine once they managed to make the multiplayer run correctly on the creation engine. Starfields mutiples planets directly hurts the gameplay bc it’s doesn’t have one big map made of mutiples cells that can slowly load while playing so in starfield ur always going through a door and loading a cell, starfield is pretty much a bunch of separate cells and its makes it feels so much smaller even tho you got a galaxy to explore. Starfields is badly designed and the freaking creation engines was an awful ideas for a space game. Staefield is legit just a fo4 reskin of the outer worlds, both games are extremely similarly designed and its quite funny that todd was talking about innovation when you didn’t have any 😂

Honestly I feel like Bethesda was only at that level back then because of the hardware. I can’t really ever get back into their games except New Vegas and that isn’t even theirs. Those games aren’t the hottest, and there are games that came out at the same time that I’d rather play. Those games were successful because they were simple to pick up and play and they played and looked decent for 360 PS3 era. Fallout 4 was the beginning of the end for Bethesda’s main division. All the devs they publish for are dope though.
Edit: I take it back. Morrowind is pretty good.

Yeah fallout 76 crashed and burned, but 3 killed, new vegas KILLED and most people still attribute that more to bethesda than obsidian, (i guess cause its a fallout game?) And 4 did well. It had low period at the start, but overall, killed. People complained about the story, but LOVED the gameplay. Universally agreed that fallout 4 has the best gameplay out of any bethesda game, and then you switch over to elder scrolls, and its banger after banger. Arena and daggerfall were smaller audience, but a dedicated and cult following to this day, then morrowind was a masterpiece, then oblivion was a masterpiece, then you have to remember the hype around skyrim. It was released 12 and half years ago, and its still one of the most talked about games of today. Every person on earth has put atleast 100 hours into skyrim. So i expect people to be on the bethesda train till the end of time, just hoping and praying for Elder Scrolls 6

Not saying you don’t make valid points in this video, Starfield most certainly disappointed a lot of people, but writing off the modding community before the release of any official support, major overhaul updates, or DLC feels a bit premature to me.
