I have an old family dell OptiPlex 3050 with a i3 7th gen and 8gb ram and I’m not sure if the power supply is 180w or 240w because on the manual on the website it says 180w but on the psu it says max output 240w so idk. is it worth to upgrade the ram and putting LP gpu like the gtx 1650 ? It would cost me around 150$ with adding an nvme drive. I’m hesitate because all the tests and builds i saw are with an i5 and this cpu (the i3) is not that good 😅

Honestly… I don’t know how you missed that these come with a single 6-pin PCIe power connection. The Z210, Z220, Z230 and Z240… they all have one. There was no need to resort to the dual SATA connections and you could easily run a 1080 off this thing without needing to upgrade the power supply. Just a 6-pin to 8-pin adapter would do.

I’d be willing to bet in a few years, the 3050 will be considered a great option for a used GPU in a tight budget PC, replacing the 1030. It’s fantastic price to performance if you can pick one up used for $50 or so, especially if you don’t have a strong power supply or a 6 pin. Fingers crossed we see a 3050ti. The 1050ti was a decent card for the used market.

Must be a hard sell, trying to sell a RX 570, 4gb as there’s so many 8gb cards from the crypto mining. And vram being so much more important in 2024. I actually have a 4gb RX 480 and I’m keeping it for testing purposes since it’s worth so little. Also Nvidia cards are just always worth more because it’s Nvidia. Most of those workstation are compact, you can’t install a decent VGA inside. And they also come with very limited power supply, about 250W. I don’t know if it’s enough to support VGA, even 75W VGAs.

Something to note, these oem hp desktops use a proprietary 18 pin power connecter. If you want to upgrade the power supply you’ll need a 24 pin to 18 pin power connector adapter.

I’ve done a similar build with an i5 4590, and a 1050ti, that thing is pretty good for entry level gaming, and esports titles, it could run fortnite performance mode 100%res scale with 114fps average

I was able to get an omen 25L with a ryzen 5 5600g, gtx 1660 super, 8 gb ddr4 ram (obviously will have to upgrade), and 500 gb ssd.

One request task: make offer for a such entry-level office / workstation PC for gaming, like this video, but: ensure to be actually compatible (able to run) with Windows 11 and any possible future versions of Windows!

So far, any similar videos I’ve watched are mentioning only cheap PCs that has an older CPUs limited to run only Windows 10 as maximum! But:
1. There’s now only around 1,5 years left until the moment when Microsoft would discard Windows 10’s support;
2. Also, there’s might be only a couple months left until game developers are starting releasing games that requires Windows 11 as a minimum supported OS! In this case, those old PCs might becomes obsolete and unsusable for any future PC games released (as I remembered, during the last year of both Windows XP and 7 support – around 2013 and 2019 respectively, major game’s developers has’t made their games released during that time compatible with these OSes).

This means, once games’ developers drop Windows 10 support and start requiring 8th Gen Intel or 2nd Gen AMD Ryzen (those are still the lowest CPU generations supported by Windows 11) those workstations despite being pretty powerful, might become only usable with a Linux distro installed and Valve’s Steam Proton, and running only maybe pre-2025 released games…

This is exactly where I started about six years ago! I bought some random dell optiplex with a 1tb hdd an i5 2500 and 12gb of ddr3. I slapped my freshly sniped ebay rx 570 4g in there. Then I was off playing all the WarThunder, Gmod and CSGO I could handle!

That first number in crystal diskmark is only a theoretical speed…the speed you actually got was read 5176 MB/s and write 5674 MB/s

This is pretty close to my $40 PC. I got a HP pavilion with an i5 7400 for free. Picked up a Rx 480 4gb and $16gb of ram for $50 then sold the stock ram for $10. I was worried about the 300w PSU but haven’t had any issues even when stress testing the CPU and GPU at the same time. Time Spy score of 4379 with the 329th fastest RX 480 after an overclock. What’s even crazier about that is that it’s an OEM HP Rx 480 with a stock TDP of 110 compared to the normal 150W. I raised the power limit to 150w in adrenaline to match normal Rx 480s but I wouldn’t go higher bc 6pin+pci-e can only supply 150w.

this is the build i use and ive no complaints. my HDD is a 4tb Seagate 7200 RPM, the SSD is a WD Green 120gb, and i got the MSI ITX version of the 1060 3gb. I use CAS and the Steam Deck Performance Mod in Starfield and have no issues with it, it plays nearly 60 fps in Robocop Rogue City (75% scaling TSR) medium and it looks gorgeous in my older Dell 1050p monitor (im not in a hurry to upgrade). Its been my build for a while now, and it has an OEM Dell XPS mobo, along with a 750w PSU (its a brand name just cant remember) and as well the 16gb is a big help, as is overclocking (and overvolting) the 1060, it will gain noticeable performance increases. Its all in a RoG Strix GD30 case and a lil extra RGB. Im in no hurry yet to change up, maybe next year.

You should of have atleast the same budget as a peasant console no way people looking for these unrealistic deals

HI Zach, I have been using a similar pc for a few years now, a Z220 model I put in a 2tb drive with an rx 6500 xt, which i chose because it was the most powerful card at the time with a 6-pin connector which came with the psu. i know the 6500 xt technically isnt the best “budget gpu” but its part of the 6000 sieries of cards, its power efficient, and because its newer architecture it’l probably be supported for a longer time in terms of the drivers

also these days the 1060 3GB is more of a 720/900p card, pairing with one of those monitors (since they’re also cheaper) would go perfect since it’d look better than running at those resolutions on a 1080p monitor, something like a 900p 75Hz monitor would be a real good sweetspot and it’d still be under $150 cause those old 900p75 monitors are dirty cheap, it’s sad how badly that GPU aged though, when it came out it was definitelly a PS4 Pro killer, now even the 6GB one can barely keep up with the base PS4 in modern titles

Got an i5-4590k paired with a Zotac 1660 Super and 16gb DDR3 RAM. Runs games like BG3 on 1080p at about 40-60fps. Newer Open World RPGs like Dragons Dogma 2 won’t run. But: My 1660 is still bottlenecked by the cpu about 30% 🥲

The RTX3050 6GB is a Dream for someone like me who prioritizes Power consumption sinec electric price is high and for an RT card with 5W less that the 1650 GDDR6 I have is a massive WIN in my book

I done similar same workstation but with Xeon and I put a 950 total cost £80 quid although that’s adding 25 for the 950 as that’s the current selling price on eBay technically I had it laying around

Impressive, specially that case with an i7 cpu included at around just 50 USD, that’s impossible to find in my country.. instead you can find used pc cases with something like an i3 cpu for around 150 USD..
PD: just reminding, that the gtx 1060 is low-tier and pretty old card, and it’s driver support is on it’s last stages

I would also reccomend buying an Amd iGPU mini PC for this price. you can usually plug in a eGPU by either usb4 or a mini pcie.
