After STARFIELD, I Finally Appreciate THE OUTER WORLDS
#starfield #theouterworlds #theouterworlds2
Starfield. Bethesda. Two of the biggest names in RPG gaming. But many would argue their best days are behind them. The Outer Worlds. Obsidian. A lesser known but prolific studio that’s made some of the best RPGs ever, including a sequel to Bethesda’s own Fallout 3 in Fallout: New Vegas. Because of hand offs like this, the two studios are often compared to one another and once the Outer Worlds mimicked Fallout 3, Rage, Borderlands, No Man’s Sky, and all the rest, the comparisons grew, and then probably exploded into the stratosphere when Bethesda’s own space RPG Starfield came out 4 years later. The comparisons are inevitable but are they worth making? Starfield’s clearly operating on a whole other scope than the 30 hour diorama style maps the Outer Worlds is trafficking. But I’d argue that’s exactly why they’re worth comparing because I didn’t like the Outer Worlds much until AFTER I’d finished Starfield many years later. Here’s why.

I loved the Outer Worlds. One of the only games I played on GamePass instead of waiting for the PS port. Played Starfield on GamePass and after awhile just lost interest. My biggest disappointment was the outpost building, I was expecting something better than fallout 4 settlements.
I’m straight up just responding to the title. Same, dude, the same.
TOW is still only an okay game, but if Starfield had handled planetary exploration in a similar way it would of gone from meh to fantastic. I don’t even want to talk about the progression mechanics.
Like, come on Bethesda. Everything after Fallout 3 has been a mess.
ugly female characters, awkward facial expressions, Sweet Baby detector ?
I enjoyed Outer Worlds. Yet…i have absolutely no urge or desire to play it again and i could never understand why…
Starfield is definitely the better game tho, it’s just that it’s popular to hate on Starfield which is sad
The biggest problem with the puter worlds is the perception that if Outer Worlds just being succeesful as a response to Fallout 76.
To me the appeal was always a new dialogue and character interaction focused FPS RPG like New Vegas and VTMB. Behesda has an exploration focus. Ganes that hit like New Vegas and VTMB sre rare, so even juat an ok to pretty good one like Outer Worlds was a treat. (Avowed totally missed the mark though. The world was bot interactive qt all and i bounced off of it in just a fewq hours.)
Played Outer Worlds for a few hours, then went back to Starfield. Never returned to OW..
So are we all nervous Outer Worlds 2 is the HR department in space?
had more fun with starfield than I did with outerworlds. outerworlds just force feeds gay trans propaganda to its players. id rather play a boring uninteresting game than a leftist ideological vehicle disguised as a game anyday
I will say starfield and the outerworlds are going for entirely different types of games. Starfield is intending to be a simulator with a story added on and less of a linear rpg. But I do think the star wars genesis mod fixes a lot of its issues. Its the only way I have found to enjoy starfield. Meanwhile from everything ive seen from outerworlds, just doesnt look that good to me and its not the genre.
People clowned on The Outer Worlds, but it stood more than a full head over Starfield’s bowl of tasteless porridge.
The outer worlds isn’t any better it’s just shorter and less open world
The ship building was so cool, but ultimately pointless. The repeating POIs, always walking distance from wherever you land on any planet, just seemed like an awful design choice. The whole game was just bad fundamental decisions. Some of the dialogue and virtually all the characters were poorly written, I didn’t care at all web X died. All that being said I had a fine time playing it, it’s not like they did no work at all.
I’ve thought this for several years now but I’m convinced that Bethesda don’t make RPGs. They make digital theme parks with RPG trappings.
I went into the Outer Worlds with the baseline assumption that it was a small team with barely any budget – once you look at that the Outer worlds is actually REALLY impressive
Starfield is empty, hollow, procgen sludge that feels designed to be TEDIOUS and suck players’ time instead of being fun – hollow empty cardboard cutout NPC’s, empty quests with no impact on the dead, empty world, tedious roadblock-filled fake crafting and skill tree that are really not useful and 80% of skills that are worthless, food that is just useless trash, unreactive dead world that only awakens when PLAYER CHARACTER enters the scene, a huge “variety” of weapons that are in actuality like 3 different weapons with different skins – Everything in starfield down to every last system feels like a fake coat of paint over an empty box of nothing – like they told CHATGPT to generate a generic space game just surface level enough to trick players into spending 2 hours in it so they can’t get a refund. Starfield took me from excited to miserable and angry, because it feels like Bethesda is actively disdainful of the players and dishonestly jacking me around was NOT what they promised. Hell, even water is only 3 inches deep so you “swim” across the surface – like EVERYthing else in the game.
The Outer Worlds is MILES better than Starfield because OW is a real video game – Starfield is a fake game.
My most recent playthrough of Outer Worlds was 100% melee… and it was great.
Ive always liked outer worlds and its baffled me that no one really talks about what it does well. There’s actually a decent amount of fun to be had, even if it’s just a pale imitation of what obsidian was once able to accomplish. That’s why I’m excited for two as much as I am. They tried it out, got some criticism, commuted to fixing it, and now I’m looking forward once again. The initial launch was pretty underwhelming, but it wasn’t “bad” either. Just not what we wanted it to be.
Nah Starfield and Outer Worlds suck dick, both are abysmally mediocre games
I’ve played both and enjoyed both. Hopefully the missteps will inform each games future.
This is why I occasionally eat dominos to make all the mid tier pizza chains fine dining by contrast.
new vegas was the rpg that woke me up to how amazing rpgs were, loved all the fallouts after that, bethesda games were sick. Fallout 4 was so anticipated but def gave me the willies, but i still loved it despite how bad the story was, I still refuse to play fallout 76 until they make an offline mode
I was so disappointed with bethesda after 76, but I still had hope for starfield. I even bought an expensive xbox series x for starfield in 2024 to finally play specifically the disc version I bought of starfield I bought with the console (same as why I bought the ps4 to play fallout 4 years earlier)
I could not believe how shit the intro was, I couldn’t believe we were railroaded into this boring faction of lame silly highschool dogooders with their silly haiku poems and single joke about “skyscrapers can’t JUMP”
how the hell is their only 4 companions ? BUT HOW THE HELL WERE THEY ALL FROM THAT UTTERLY SHIT FACTION ????
I bounced off the game hard after only a few hours, just like I did with outer worlds. It was only this year, that I swallowed my bummedness and went back in. I was so sad that the apparel was even worse than in fallout 4
and I was gobsmacked that they made modding weapons single use disposable nothings, so you couldn’t even save an optic from one gun to put on another version of the same gun later, or what is even more insane, that all the little objects scattered around in the hundreds to thousands around every location WEREN’T ABLE TO BE BROKEN DOWN ??
But I am so disillusioned with how there are so few single player open rpgs that still have scope anymore as they have all been made to be online monstrosities, “here today (TO GET YOUR MONEY), gone tomorrow” like all online only titles
so I went into the creations and decided to see if I could download at least the stuff to make the base experience of starfield not some how be backwards step to Fallout 4. And I did just so I could actually play the game.
And when I fixed the stuff that I was so bummed on by the generosity of strangers…. I could finally play the game, and its not all bad, but EVERYTHING with the main quest is GENUINELY SOMEHOW WORSE THAN FALLOUT 4 BY A LOT WHAT WERE THEY THHINKING LIKE UTTER SHIT
Almost every quest is BORING BUSY WORK TO FILL TIME, but the quests they actually put time into are kinda designed like the first quest in Fallout 4 with the deathclaw, where they tried to add spectacle rather than choices or really interesting lore or characters. But its ok.
BY TTHE WAY HOW IS THERE LIKE 50 BOOKS IN THE GAME FOR A BRAND NEW IP AND ONLY 3 OF THEM ARE ACTUAL LORE ABOUT THE WORLD, THE REST IS CHARLES DICKENS WTF WTF WTF
Bethesda is just a weird ass studio, it seems like there are splinters in that studio that still are dedicated to weird little immersive single player open world adventure RPG stuff, but the top brass must be COMPLETELY OUT TO LUNCH, in some weird middle ground of actual modernity of the wretchedness of modern video games and the continued degradation of their games through the “streamlining” that has been happening since Oblivion
Thoughtfully put together video. Great presentation of your ideas. Watching this reminded me more of how I felt back when I played The Outer Worlds. I remember thinking it was okay and when I heard it had DLC coming out I planned to go back to it but never got around to it. I just never really could into it maybe the humor just didn’t land with me.
8:52 “Unsympathetic Victim” is probably a good term for Skyler. She’s (arguably) one of Walt’s biggest victims, but she can make it hard to care.
Not me. Starfield any day.
I’m glad The Outer Worlds is getting a bit more recognition. It was such a fun game to me
This title is like saying “After eating ground horse meat, I finally appreciate steak” 😆😆
It was great to be able to contribute a little slice here! The Outer Worlds definitely got a glow-up from playing Starfield, but as I jabber about in here, I definitely enjoyed my time with Starfield.
I personally like both Starfield and Outer Worlds. But i prefer Outer Worlds approach of a few planets that are handcrafted to explore, over Starfield’s thousands of procedurally generated planets.
I think they both suffer from uninteresting companions though, outside of Parvati in Outer Worlds. But i enjoyed the combat and exploration in both alot, which kept my playing more than the story.
It is frustrating how little time I have to play all the games you and @deadforge talk about so eloquently and intiguingly. This video here is a prime example of how exceptional your work is. I just sat through 44 minutes, listening to you and your wonderful guests talking about two games I have never played, and not only was I entertained, it got me thinking. I feel I learned things. Damn, you’re good.
Great video sir. I wanted so badly to like The Outer Worlds. You nailed most of my concerns about it, namely the skills and the need to level in a few certain ways lest you fall behind the curve. Both games to me had that frustrating NPCs staring you down vibe, never blinking, while anyone in the frame stands idly by. It’s that bizarre uncanny, I can’t stand it.
(32:47 Your controller batteries are low)
Think you are massively missing out on the Starfield skill tree and the roleplaying you can do with it if you are only upgrading weapons and speech check skills
I loved the video, btw.
I recently played Outer Worlds to completion and while I enjoyed some aspects of it, I really despised the actual gameplay (combat) part of the game, it was just the worst most bland combat I’ve played in my life, by comparison everything about Starfield is pretty bad except I enjoyed the combat which made me overal enjoy my experience more with Starfield then Outer Worlds
Gotta call one misinformation out. They never said the 1000 planets were unique and made to be explored. Todd literally did an interview after that review saying 95% were gonna be resource planets
Yes, this is why I preferred Borderlands over Fallout 3, NV. A tight world with something to find at every corner is much better.
I absolutely loved Outer Worlds from the beginning. I don’t even know why, it is a very average game, but the humor, the characters, the anti-capitalism just made it a game made for me. Parvati is probably my favorite companion in any game ever. And the art style made it unique. The sequel is the game I look forward for the most this year.
I got my license at 16, but I didn’t start dating until 19, so I get it. I think the themes, no matter how serious, come across so flat because that’s the norm in Halcyon. Being charged for your burial, forced to recite jingles while slaving away in factories basically for free with barely surviving and housing as your payment. You’re given a job based on your family, or whatever the corporation decides for you, not your interests. I’d say that’s much worse than cannibals and cracked out bandits.
I’m about halfway through your video and you’ve inspired me to play this game!! Also I didn’t get my driver’s license until I was 18 too 😂
Haven’t finished the video yet, but the title sums up how I feel about the outer worlds!
