Starfield Analysis: Nostalgia, Liminal Spaces & Loneliness

starfield 情報局

#bethesda #starfield #rpg
This is a deeply personal analysis of Starfield and its themes of loneliness, nostalgia and liminal spaces. Truth be told, I’ve been “secretly” (as youtubers love to say) playing Starfield for months and enjoyed it quite a lot. Which surprised me because everyone told me the game sucks. The thing that most surprised me was how strangely nostalgic the game felt. So in this video I explore some of these aspects. I separated the video into 3 main chapters, but honestly the script is all over the place. I had so much to say but didn’t want to overdo it, as it’s already quite a long video.

No AI was used in making of this video. And spoilers warning for the main quest, I guess.

00:00 Intro
03:15 Chapter 1: Anemoia or that strange nostalgic feeling
08:40 Akila: the romantic frontier
11:15 Neon: forbidden cinematic future
13:30 Novalis, Unity & nostalgia for the Future
16:38 Chapter 2: Liminality
17:58 Staryards: abandoned space castles
20:10 Planets: vastness and meta-potential
23:12 New Atlantis, Walt Disney’s Utopia
27:13 Chapter 3: Loneliness. “Real” vs “fake” NPCs
31:51 Finding your North Star & light existentialism
35:51 Starborn’s lonely path of dehumanization

Well Mr. Knight, you did an amazing job on this “presentation”. As someone with over 2k Starfield hours on Steam, content like this is always a welcome discovery. I agree with everything you said about the game, yet this video still felt very interesting. Good job indeed. Positive-minded content creators like you keep YouTube above generic hate-click, AI slop and lurk-posters. Subscribed.

One of the things which brings me back to Starfield often is the Protagonist’s role. If you’re a in-depth nut with RP like me, the protagonist is lonely. Whoever they bonded with first will never return, even those other eternal beings repeating the cycle change and do not wholly recognize you. You’re stuck in this pseudo-groundhog day until you realize you’ll never truly be with them again, and you’re just killing more of the lookalikes as you go.
I wish Bethesda did more with this. It’s why I can’t really bring myself to make another character after my first, because this game feels like you’re absolutely supposed to experience it all with one, because what else will it do until it gives up. It’s a depressing story. And I have no doubt we become the hunter ourselves, which would be a cool ending spin. I do think if you NG+ enough you get the Hunter armor too.
The game isn’t the most in-depth, and it’s story can use a lot of work, but the story it doesn’t tell is tremendous, though partially it is ours alone.

    Great video, very moving.

I’ve got about 1700 hours, but didn’t yet explore the “Pole Star” quest on Cydonia–thanks for sharing. I’m still amazed at the little gems of content sprinkled around the game that remain hidden after so long.

I actually like Starfield and was a little sad that Bethesda dropped the ball with the game. I do love going from one planet to another to get lost in the scenario but they could of added more animals into these planets to make it more alive. I do love getting quests from listening to NPCs and hope Elder Scrolls 6 does this. Mods of course is the life blood of these games.

Calling “hoomans iz bad we ruinz erff” a deep core secret, when you can see it from 10,000 miles away is beyond cope. The tropes in this game are tired and overused 15 years ago. Emil is a hack and it shows very much in this derivative slop. This was the pinnacle of Bethesda hubris and laziness, a bad combo in a creative space. I gave it 600 hours because the shipbuilder is fun, but giving credit to the narrative is comical.

i wish bethesda had never made their new ip as something unique, instead they could have bought rights to do a game in “the expanse” universe, think about this, the expanse have realistic ships with no warpdrive or no flying in space like airplanes do. also the [spoiler event] and [spoiler thing] allowed interstellar travel without warpdrive. they could’ve built a universe much more interesting and fun than starfield. the lore already exists in novel form + there is even a tv show for them take inspiration from, so they will have to spend very little manpower, time and money on conceptualization, planning and brainstorming process of the development. Only problem they would come across would be to make earth fully explorable but even that is possible to make using partial procedural generation because there is a [spoiler event] that occurs which makes earth mostly destroyed. There is one upcoming game in the expanse universe but will be a mix of an rpg and a 3rd person corridor shooter, no ship combat.

all in all i think they missed huge boat by not doing this. it’s seems to me that neither todd nor bethesda have their magic anymore. starfield isn’t neccesarily terrible, just meh and boring mostly. bethesda’s new ip isn’t what it should’ve/could’ve been…

I have never played Starfield, nor do I intend to (body types, bah). But I watched your video with great interest. I guess SF makes me claustrophobic (strangely enough, since it is literally the most.. spacious 🙂 genre), so I would not like to immerse myself in it, as in playing it, but I occasionally read SF books or watch movies. I guess those are less imposing than games. Don’t you find it disturbing, that most of the SF genre implies that the Earth has been destroyed and humankind had to evacuate and search for other planets? Interstellar, Hyperion Cantos, Io, Midnight Sky, whatever else… I was wondering if it is a kind of a mass coding, because we – the humans – literally do everything, and have been doing for a few decades now, to actually do destroy our planet. Disguised conveniently, yet not entirely – since even someone like me can get to the bottom of it without too much struggle – as “eco”, we are being sold to more and more technologies and industries that actually make more harm than good to the environment. Electric cars, solar panels, so called “passive buildings”, just to name a few. We – the people – are doing what we can to actually make our home unlivable. And being surrounded by mass culture productions, like Interstellar and Starfield (cinematic gods forgive me for enlisting those two in one line :-)), we subconsciously take this scenario as “normal” and actually strive to make it.. real.
I actually watched only the first chapter, so I will probably write more soon 🙂 And I love your essay, as always 😀

Great analysis, I also enjoy the moments of introspection and contemplation, mixed with the fun of battles, building, and questing. Im just over 2000 hours playtime so far, still on my 1st playthru, and yet there is a lot more to explore and do, ive not even done all the major quests, or side quests yet, every time I play I find something new. I like to take my time and enjoy the experience, definitely not a speed-runner, IMO thats a shallow way to go thru life, and is not very enriching or rewarding.

There needs to be more of everything. More and better ships, armor, bigger and more outpost options, bigger cities, more enemies and factions. There should be at least one dangerous planet full of enemies where you encounter hostile (humanoid)npcs every 1 minute of moving around.
They absolutely failed to capitalize on outpost and ship building. I still enjoy the game from time to time but it is an obvious step back from Fallout 4 which is sad.

Superb analysis! I adore Starfield, and genuinely believe that the people who indiscriminately hate on this game have IQs in the “shady eighties,” as they say. I have spent so much time in Starfield simply doing nothing — just existing, watching everything happen around me of its own accord. For me, it is the quintessential cozy game.

Skyrim I’ve played thousands of hrs through dozens of playthrough modded and base game. Starfield 100hrs and no interest to keep going it’s a bland boring game compared to any of their other titles. Mods don’t help that either.

I have quite a fondness for Akila city as well. I grew up in Montana, a northwestern state that borders Wyoming, where the capital Cheyenne is located.

My family has been out west since the 1840s and the rugged frontier aesthetic that the free star collective brings, especially Akila city makes me feel at home.

Guys try elite dangerous and see how lonely it is outside the bubble (human space). StarField doesn’t have that. you land on a planet you get abandoned buildings, pirates, merc, zealots ……..no it is not empty at all

I absolutely love that this isn’t just “a game review”.

So much passion went into creating a realistic yet futuristic world & despite the problems during development (which you mentioned – covid & the studio’s exponential growth), we got a really great gaming experience. Made even better with mods.

    Great reflection/disection. Cheers!

If Bethesda had stuck to the design philosophy of the last 3 Elder Scrolls games of creating a smaller, but much more purposeful and deeply detailed world full of storytelling, then I would have bought Starfield. It’s not the loading screens, or the setting or whatever else that people criticize that put me off. It’s this big big world, but everything just seems kind of soulless and empty. I’m sure there is soul and ideas in the game, but I would have liked it to be much more dense and compact and not be stuffed with filler npcs and empty rooms and things like that. Creating that cost time and money that they could have invested in storytelling and creating interesting characters.

A good alternative title would be “cosmic boringness”. (Love your vides) but on a serious note Starfeild is so bad, not to mention it’s more of a loading screen simulator then it is a space RPG.

I had a lot of fun playing starfield, honestly I think a lot of the hate for it comes from it being many people’s first bethesda game, for example the number one complaint I hear about it is that it has too many loading screens
