Prevent Item Sinking [Decorating Mechanics]
This video demonstrates the methods I’ve developed for decorating with interactive items to consistently settle them without sinking into surfaces at outposts, in the Dream Home, and on ships, with one exception – Galacticat. But even in his defiance, there is a pattern. A case study on his behavior follows the main content.
For quick reference, the methods are listed below.
If you have an alternate method that works for you to prevent item sinking, please share your insights in the comments below. We’d love to hear from you and build our collective knowledge!

Here from NoSodiumStarfield. Thanks for the video, very helpful! 😀
Wouldn’t it be nice to have Bethesda or a mod that could sort this thing out? New to your channel 👏🏼👍🏻
Thank you for this! I like that you didn’t just tell us what works — although that’s indispensable for outpost builders in and of itself — but WHY. My BIL had speculated something similar to your origin point explanation, and it makes sense.
For the Mercury Tower penthouse from the Vanguard quest, DEFINITELY don’t take the elevator or the NAT to get to your ship, or use the map fast travel points to get down to the spaceport. I’m guessing that I wouldn’t have had to place all those bottles again in Gal #2’s dining room if I’d just gone directly to the cockpit of her ship, then followed the rest of the instructions from there.
Also, there’s always what I call “the poor man’s method” — drop things one one trip, and place them on the next. As long as they don’t re-enter your inventory at any point, it’s fairly foolproof. This works best if you’re bringing things back little by little, instead of doing all the decor in one go.
I did Gal #1’s place in Dazra that way, and it was very satisfying to see it look naturally more and more lived in as she added things to it from her travels (even if the display case did lose three of the geese). 🙁
Great video Pegasus. What works for me is do a hard save, then load the same file. I don’t even travel. Also, when placing items, you can rotate for better placement. The collision is off-centered which is good for putting cups next to plates, or wine bottles close together etc. And yes, the Galacticat is weird. I just leave that one alone. Cora can’t have one!
