The Future of Starfield: What More Can It Become?

Starfield is a better game, now, than it was at launch, but that doesn’t mean it has changed that much, and there is definitely still room for it to become a whole lot better, both with small, obvious changes, and major additions or expansions. So, as we look toward the future of the settled systems, I’d like to share and discuss some of the many varied ideas I’ve had about potential changes and expansions for the Starfield experience.

    Several of these requests are already available through Mods. I strongly agree that Bethesda needs to up their attention to the details of Starfield and stop being so lazy, because ultimately it’s their responsibility and not on Modders to fix their games.
    I feel that Bethesda’s attitude towards their audience has lessened over the years and they’ve become indifferent to delivering quality work. There are so many examples of ignorance and laziness in the early part of Starfield that it repels casual gamers and insults all of our intelligence. Most of those lazy ignorant situations would be extremely easy to repair and would immediately raise the quality of the game significantly.

    They need to reintegrate the concept of making the game world a place to live in like how elder scrolls had originally been envisioned. Make it feel like you can just role play a regular citizen

    It needs… to be left alone and resources spent on a ES6 or F05. If you really want to fix it, delete 980 planets and craft 20 memorable openworld spaces with environmental storytelling and quests. Also allow someone to be a pirate or renegade or a nobody salvaging space wrecks. It is basically pointless, as Beth is incapable of fixing it and the modding community is DOA compared to Skyrim/Fallout.

    Would love ‘space walking’ outside our ship / station! 🪐 Hope we also get the option to buy furnishings & buildings (at a premium) – instead of having to craft everything. Why do I need to build my bed for my penthouse apartment 😂

    This game needed multiple ground vehicles, how you conquer the stars and utterly regress on the ground? Also fast travel should “Always” be optional, never mandatory. Should’ve been a seamless transition when flying to planets, also main mission was Waaaaaay too short, side mission weren’t enough either, love the weapons but i didn”t have enough

    Going back and playing vanilla Skyrim just feels night and day compared to this game. I was out exploring and stumbled upon a few quests. Starfield doesn’t have this organic exploration and discovery of quests. Everything is just fast travel here and there. There are no quests that you find while organically exploring.

    An issue that sullied the somewhat improved weapon selection imo, is the fact it has so little in weapon mod variations. Most guns have a skin slot but nothing is there, like said in the video. Or ammo types being attachment options instead of physical ammo. Or mods being just Stat upgrades. F4 let me do so much with my guns, and though it terrified the gun nerd in me, it helped. FNV ammo worked with the large weapon selection though. With durability (and the kinda sad modding system, which worked perfectly fine for the most part) there was a purpose for most weapons, and ammo types, even melee too. Starfield has me having to farm the same weapon to get damage boosts to have to put the same attachments on because they have a linear progression for the most part. At least f4 and f76 have a spread of upgrades through progression, like with the 10mm pistol (though f76 has the same problem where a lot of guns have like 2 modifications). Add in meh melee and having to play through a fat chunk of game to get powers, and combat just kinda falls flat. It pains me how things I take for granted with Star Citizen are just absent here, and I really feel their absence. The load screens just kill me though. With f3 where the combat is meh, at least I can immerse myself in the melted clay visuals. With starfield, no matter how immersed I get, I have to look at the dumb map, and go through a load screen. I don’t know what exactly needs to change, but I think that until the combat gets improved, and the loadscreens get decreased (whereever possible), then maybe something is possible. But I truly think they need a Cyberpunk level TLC patch to right the ship, and I don’t think Bethesda cares enough to do that.

    Need mods that have aliens and predator!! Bringing hunted across the galaxy or traveling to a planet infested with xenos. Modders can do so much here but I haven’t seen anything yet. Hopefully someone jumps on this!! I would buy everything based off of it.

    Yeah, the weapon and armor customization in this game was horrible, it’s crazy to say, but assassin’s Creed shadows had better customization and that’s a Ubisoft game

    Or….🧐🤔 add a Wormhole or Blackhole that sends you into another universe and another TIME all together. That way you’re seen as the alien potential invading a sovereign planet that eats the brains of aliens for knowledge wisdom. I don’t think the devs grew up watching alot of Sci Fi. You could literally “borrow ” story arcs from a plethora of sources. 🤔🧐..Firefly, Cowboy Beebop, Robotech, Aliens, The Abyss, Event Horizon, Dr. Who (60s thru 90s), Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, Mass Effect, Star Citizen, Star Wars (70s/80′ / Graphic Novels /)Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, Dune, The Thing, War of the Worlds, Starblazer, Voltron, Back to the Future, Tales from the Darkside, X Files, and so many more. Your spaceship is basically literally your own personal…Tardis, your U.S.S Enterprise your Stargate‼️🧐🤔 Make every planet it’s own society it’s own race of unique alien lifeforms it’s own language with detailed storylines with deep dialog consequences that connects to other planets and unknown lifeforms. You go to a planet who’s society lives in an upside down world with a Dark City/ Truman show type vibe…everybody’s dead but don’t know it or their role in the world changes every 24 hours and they never remember the last 24 hours‼️🤔🧐 The story possibilities and lore for each planet is endless. Maybe by the end you have to stop a younger version of your grand father from ever being born‼️Well, just my personal opinion. 😢

    Hello. I’ve recently started my first playthru and what has struck me is how determined the game is not to challenge or inconvenience you in any way. And I think that is one of its core problems.

    For example, space travel is little more than glorified fast travel. Also, combat afflictions. It’s good that they’re there but you can ignore them, just as you can ignore encumberance.

    But removing anything challenging removes anything to engage with, anything that makes the game interesting. That, for me is why it’s so lackluster. Not bad, but lackluster

    Everything needs to be completely rewritten.
    1. McGuffin hunts are not inspiring. Don’t turn it into a hunt for a specific thing, make it a more interesting and complex problem to resolve.
    2. The main faction is too giddy and trusting about the PC and are all flat.
    3. Everything is written and designed to make the PC the center of the universe.
    4. The factions are just a checklist.
    5. Most quests have one way to resolve them with stealth not being an option in most cases.
    6. The multiverse element renders everything pointless, it should be completely ripped out. It also doesn’t line up with the “near futuristic” vibe of the game in general.

    – hide warpdrive loading screen with warpdrive animation. same with elevators
    -release some free content with every DLC that fleshes out the world. not content thats just in one area.
    -Make it so mining and trading is a real thing. in way that you want to play as a trader or miner. space trucking should be a big part of the game. now its pointless. and with this improve smugling and illegaldrug production. this would have a huge effect on the world
    -let us build space stations and mechs. mechs should be built kinda same way as ships does. let them orbital drop from ships and space stations.
    -make better difficulty setting. the game has LOTS of variables that really improves the AI, in combat. i had awesome enemy AI 5 days after release, cause i found the register for it.
    -More cool NPC. they dont really have many interresting NPCs outside main quests. like Heimskr in skyrim
    -Please fix the pirate faction. its lacking
    -Allow us to build settlements
    -and they need more cities. the amount of cities in this game is astoundingly low. and those major cities should have small villages around em. even skyrim had this
    -Release documentation for the starfield creationkit

    No offense, but your ideas for multiverses are boring as hell. What we need here is to throw the tradition of “all multiveres need to have small differences between each other” and go creative and radical. What about a retrofuturistic universe where the architecture, fashion , ect. are influenced by the science fiction of the 50s like we see in Fallout (a Starfield/Fallout crossover set in the future of that universe maybe?)? Or an universe where the Va’ruun won the Serpent’s Crusade and all Settled Systems are in their thrall? In this universe, the Constelation could be a rebel group, formed by ex-members of both the UC an Freestar Collective, fighting against the tyranny of House Va’ruun. Or even a universe where Vae Vistis _was_ executed, but where the Terrormorph attack in New Atlantis spaceport was caused by an unseen new enemy? Hell, we could even have an universe with aliens, like those from Mass Effect and other sci-fi works, sharing the universe with the Settled Systems. The oportunities are so infinite as the multiverse itself and such universes would really stimulate some players (like me) to play a New Game+ instead of simply ignore that feature.
    And yes, I never played that blasted NG+. I _hate_ the fact that, aside a few events and dilogue options, I playing the same game all over again.

    For me they need more enemies variety like in fallout 4, imagine a halo jackal like enemy with a portable shield and a pistol or melee weapon walking at you. Maybe they could give the NPC the ability to use the jet pack to Hoover and be a menace in the sky the player can. Also more love to melee in general, new animations idk.

    And second they could just developed the area around new Atlantis, hope town and Akila city. Fill the empty space and add new quest to make us stay in a single tile longer. And if they wanted they could make the places above ground and without loading screens.

    It’s needs what it can’t ever get, a complete game loop overhaul!

    You can’t change the bad boring story, companions, empty bland planets, the cut and paste mobs, the endless base bugs.

    And this is Bwthesda, they are not fixing bugs or changing base game featutes.

    There is a lot of content, it’s just the same content you’ve seen after 10 hours of the game.

    S F is a fumble, I have played Fallout 4 for thousands of hours, but after 80 hours I uninstalled and will never go back.

    I’m gonna be real with you guys, unless Bethesda themselves start doing the hard work of expanding not only the narrative elements, but also just the range of potential encounters and dungeons, this game is going absolutely nowhere.

    This isn’t like Arcanum, VtM:B or even Skyrim. There is no solid baseline, the game is exactly what you see it as. There is no hidden depths of lore or character, no great potential as it exists currently.

    Also from what I hear, the tech used to lip sync is expensive and not available in the creation kit, so even simple dialogue stuff will be weirdly lacking in facial movement.

    It just needs an exploration update and to continue making dlc. They simply need to create way more dungeon building sets and presets, as well as different types of dungeons and structures. They need to create more variety so that the proceedural nature is not as apparent. Then they need to add a few more benefits to exploring these planets, maybe materials to build new types of terrain traversing crafts (which they also need to add) and maybe implement an ability for new hand made quests to take place on different planets for different players. Also an expansion on being a space pirate would be cool

    I have over 6000h buried on Starfield, since the day zero – I come from Elite Dangerous, a dead-end game, with crappy support and poor design, and I never grow tired of Starfield, since then ! I run hundreds of mods, dozens of NG+, and hundreds of new play stiles…
    Starfield is growing, the support is fantastic, and I hope Bethesda will keep this game alive many, many years, with DLCs !
    And dude, stop spreading BS about DLC “overpriced” lol !
    I got all my DLC.s FREE – and many peoples who bought the digital version paid NOTHING for both DLCs !

    I don’t think Starfield has what it takes to be great.

    Stsrfield to me is one of the biggest disappointments ever

    My mom believes I was the second….lol….eh😵‍💫

    But the game lacks the dedication and the proper devs

    I really wanted to love this game

    To be a space cowboy

    To have my own serenity

    But the game CONSTANTLY gets in its own way

    To the point of being insufferable at worst and consistently annoying at best

    If this came out 15 years ago

    It would’ve stood a chance

    Love this game. I think Zombie parasite mod would be the best. derelict ships could have active zombies in it. incoming landing ships on planets could roll for a chance to have infected “Heat Leech esque” critters on board. that” give civilized planets more meaning to their safety checks.

    lol the games a test bed game, aka used to test the engin the game isnt profitable ebough to fix and change theres alot like get rif of the pronouns, fix the charicter creator it is so rubbish they went backwards fallout 4 and 76s charicter creator are more advanced. the muiliverses are fun but rubbish could have had an amazing story if we could bring our companion we married with us and kept our gear we have on the ship instead of constantly trying to find money and gear all over again. all i did with jumping universes was to just to scan planets cull the wildlife and thats it the mod shop is worthless its just them being lazy letting the community “fix” the game but there just mods not official

    This game could’ve been so good man. I legit waited a full year before playing to make sure I got the best experience and was still disappointed. The art style is so good but is overshadowed by the forgettable cast/locations/story, the butt ugly filters the put when you go to locations, and those damn loading screens.

    Already forgot it tbh, i played 50h in launch and bought 100$ pack for DLC pass and i haven’t even tried the new DLC. It just is big let down for me it lacks in every aspect, just good graphics wont make a good game.

    To be honest I don’t think it can become what I wanted it to be. I actually did want “Skyrim in space” and it’s anything but. The procedural generated content is fine, but you can’t escape the feeling of it. NPC’s don’t have their schedules, you won’t find all the shop owners at night time at New Atlantis hanging out at the Terrabrew Cafe. The enemies are kind of bothersome and I have a hard time telling the different factions apart, the alien creatures get pretty samey and they also appear on different planets (which makes no sense to me), the ship feels close to useless, too much fast travelling, too many loading screens, the powers and abilities could be fun but just feel really janky even for Bethesda game, the list goes on. Contrary to some of the other comments on here I actually do like the quests and I love the dialogue and old school Oblivion style camera and options. I like that the perks and backgrounds can affect conversations. This game has stuff going for it, but it can’t be the Skyrim I wanted it to be unfortunately. The problems I listed are baked into the core of it’s bones – I don’t think they can alter or change it significantly enough without just trying again.

    Starfield needs open space travel and fully explorable planets with no load screen from surface to space. Thats the standard of space exploration games. Todd howard was a fool to do this game without meeting those basic requirements

    I wanted to know what rpg players thought of starfield, so i checked an rpg forum called rpgcodex. The early responses about starfield were so outspokenly racist that it led me to wonder if all rpg fans are like that.

    The game platform is flawed. Its not fixable.

    Starfield has destroyed the sense of exploration that underpinned every bethesda game to date. You can’t fix that without rebuilding the world (galaxy).

    We might get one more DLC .But then I’m afraid that Bethesda will just add paywalled Creations. I hope I’m wrong of course.
    I just don’t see them giving us big updates for free. Plus they have to plan how they will milk our wallets with the next Elder Scrolls as well ^^

    They really need to improve the game from roots. It feels dated in animation, function and AI. The game is rather empty for a large game. Another problem is the repetition of the game. The choices and decisions made in the game are not really engaging. The quests really need more variety.

    The problem is Bethesda are dependable on Modders to do the job for them so won’t really bother. Bethesda really needs to look at Dying Light 2, Cyberpunk 2, The Witcher 3, No Mans Sky to see how to fix and improve their game.

    We should not be paying for DLC for Starfield.

    At each major settlement, there is a large tile of land surrounding it. If they focussed on those tiles and gave us 4/5 far harbour sized areas in the game with content then they would have one us over. The ‘1,000 planets’ would have been a cool side feature and the meat and potatoes would have been focused on those 4 tiles.

    Starfield went wrong because it refused to utilise the simulation aspect of their engine, it also failed to have the true exploration.

    (That’s still 48km of handcrafted content… they’ve done larger before)

    I honestly tried hard to love Starfield, I really did. But the whole time the voice in my head was whispering… ‘This is actually just slop, isn’t it?’. They could fix it, I’m sure, all they would need to do is change the story, graphics, sound, gameplay and the name.

    If they were still dead set on it being a space adventuring/exploring game then they should probably add some space adventuring/exploring content.

    After about 70 hours in the game I stopped complaining about all the loading screens. On the contrary, they became the most entertaining part.

    Only a true Starfield gamer could scrutinize this game the way you did.
    As a daily Starfield captain
    I couldn’t agree with you more.
    I’d like to see my crew have more jobs such as doctors who actually act like doctors. They should be able to create medicine from resources. The medicine they make should scale with your own rank in medicine and they should be able to heal you or crew members. or mechanics who build parts from resources we gathered for the ship and spacewalk to repair our ship. Pilots who are able to fly the ship. Enemies are able to disable our engines and board our ships. Weapon specialists who are the frontline fighters who either patrol our ships or are the ones who fight off invaders. Cooks who aren’t hanging out in the armory but in the kitchen actually using the resources I’ve gathered to feed my crew. So much potential. Come on and hurry up Bethesda.

    I think it’d be neat if you could ask Vasco to pre-program a course to whatever system then the next time you power up the grave drive you just auto jumped to the system

    A “Tales from the Starfield” DLC, scattering dozens of new and mostly hidden hidden sides quests dependent on player choices and backgrounds would add real SPICE to the character details that are otherwise lackluster. Having a set of identity-building quests for, say, your Introvert Wanted Enlightened Mobster would make you want to try other combinations, just to see the new stuff.

    Take away some elements of Starfield to change the game. No level indicating on Enemies. Only armour protects against being shot, not a huge health bar. No aim assist in space combat. Making players skill increase and have uncertainty abound with every encounter. And if you die, you respawn in a settlement minius your weapons and your ship. But they are out there and belong to the enemy that killed you. You just have to get revenge, to get them back 😊

    Bethesda seem to have forgotten the game, everyone else should do the same. Without question my biggest disappointment ever felt in gaming. I’ve been playing games since I was 9, and I’m now 51. This hurt me how bad it was. I’ve paid for the dlc but I’ll never play it I found the main game so awful. An expensive lesson… But a neccesary one.

    Games these days need more frequent updates and communication. As much as I really love the game, Starfield feels dead cause it’s just way too long between updates at this point; 1 DLC a year is a terrible way to support a game like this.

    How about side-quests filled with cosmic horror elements, time travel, parallel dimensions, etc. Side-quests that take place underwater where various alien fish, lifeforms, and other bizarre creatures surround the habitats of a secret, ancient underwater city that has been hidden for thousands, or even centuries? Or some missions regarding Earth, where some humans survived and taken refuge inside once famous landmarks, tourist sites, national monuments? So many endless possibilities that should be explored and deeply detailed with deep lore, NPC’s, factions, etc.

    Nothing short of a near complete re-design and re-write would fix things for a lot of people. Starfield was a mistake, a massive fumble that’s doomed to paid quest mods and an assortment of paid features that are basic functions of other, better games.

    Skill progression always annoyed me. remove needing skill point applied to said skill to count towards “do something X amount of times”. This way you can just play regularly so your actions will count towards all skill requirements. Of course to actually unlock the skill to use it, still apply the skill point to it.

    Tis my favorite game of all time. Say what you will but this game checks so many boxes for me. The radio silence from BGS is a bit alarming.

    Would really like to see more things to do with the ships we create. More dynamic space encounters and quests that involve using ships.

    Also, if the gameplay mechanics can get fleshed out some more, we are in business. While I know mods can get us there, it’d be nice to have fleshed out bounty hunting, smuggling, and exploring mechanics with repeatable gameplay loops.

    9:20 yes I’ve been sayin how cool would it be to explore outside your ship when your in outer space then probably add some space fights. Maybe some cool things in space too that you can interact with. Planets that do have different circumstances going on with tiny settlements would be great too as you said. Maybe put little settlements at a never ending war with each other. Space stations that have people in spacesuits fixing it. People noticing you more from hearing you from the news and greeting you as you pass by and maybe some wanting to join your crew.

    I liked Shattered Space, but it was a bit lacking and I don’t replay it often. I think the next big dlc might be better just because it will be new and not feel like fluffed up leftovers from the main game. On the exploration front, I was excited that there were so many fauna but was disappointed that it was just scanning the same creatures in different biomes. For the most part, creations have brought a lot to the game, but Bethesda needs to get a little more particular with what they verify. There are some paid mods I wouldn’t touch if they were free and also the opposite. I’m 2600 hours in and still enjoying it.

    Atmospheric flight with planet circumnavigation. I know, I know. But it’s the one thing that all other issues orbit around. It’s the one thing that was missing from the game that broke all our hearts just a little bit. Whether we want to admit it or not. We need the flight, in spaceflight.

    Mechs with their own builder, that can be placed in a special docker for flight. It can act as a voiced coplilot/weapon system in space, and deployed on surface for exploration/combat. Then, give us that mech war.

    Large visible cosmic events triggering an investigation to cause. Maybe collect some ring dust. Maybe move an asteroid off a collision trajectory. Things to bring players out to those “extra” systems.

    Radio. Not just for music but information and mission triggers as well.

    Killcams/killshot slo-mo. Or whatever it’s called, you know what I’m talking about.

    More melee movesets. I don’t even play melee and I can see players that do, need more. And maybe some that tie in with assault boost pack skill to bring super melee attacks from above.

    Wishful thinking, I know. But these are some of the things I’ve thought about over 80 days worth of sailing the blackest sea on console. I love my mods, but things like this are what BGS really should tackle to make an improvement that really helps the base game. Just my opinion, as a Starfield junkie. Catch a smile out there. o7

    Housing could be better as well as interior decorations. More stuff and also less pain in the a** attaching things to the walls, like a sink.
    Building outposts should also matter more, I mean you can found your own resource mining and manufacturing mega company and no one loses a word about it. And that’s weird!

    Starfield is high on my list of games that would be insane with AI both in the game (NPCs) and for further developing the game. Think of an AI mod where you craft an entire planet, or an entire city.

    My list of wants are innumerable… But i think the number one thing i want is ship combat flesshed out with cool arenas and hand crafted space environments meant JUST for space exploration and combat .

    Starfield makes me sad, ive put over 125 hours into my only playthrough overall, and i just dont think starfield can be made into the game i want unfortunately.

    I havent played, but am fascinated by the possibly cursed problem of combining a space RPG with unlimited procedural worlds. Here’s my wishlist

    * Solve repeating POI issue. Modders might have solved this already with many additional POI, mods that randomise placement, and POI cooldown.. Bethesda could do more with a full dungeon crawler mechanic.

    * Skyrim in space, IN SPACE. Procedural planets can never replace the exploration experience of Skyrim, but you could map that experience 1-1 onto a single inspace level that lets you fly from 100km above any POI on one planet to 100km above any other POI/Planet. “You see a mountain, you can go there. On the way, a dragon flies over head, you follow it to a village under attack.” mountain becomes nebula/pulsar, dragon becomes mystery warship etc. The inspace map would ultimately have the same number of handcrafted POI as Skyrim. Technically this should not be hard. You solve the floating point issues by just keeping the ship at the origin and spawning/unspawning objects dependent on range.

    * Starfield New Vegas: In particular, have NO UNKILLABLE NPCs. But let your choices have real consequences. It is ok for choices to cut you out of content during a single playthrough. That creates replayability. New Vegas shows how this can work.

    * Many say AAA games are failing while AA games are picking up the slack. Starfield could benefit from this, and outlast Skyrim, by changing from an AAA game to a repository of many AA games. Deemphasise the main story to just another DLC. Make the core game a story-agnostic sandbox. Copy Steam’s business practices to turn Creations into an attractive target for third party developers, from Obsidian to the modding community. (yes, pay them more! You win in the end)

    What this game needs is a more in depth combat system. There is practically no difference in gameplay between shooting varuun, crimson fleet and spacers; my suggestion would be to add brand new unit types that reflect their faction (maybe riot shields for crimson fleet because they are experts at boarding ships) (or light armor – high damage melee psychos for spacers to enunciate their desperation) (or an ecliptic engineer who can summon little drones a la fallout 4’s synth relay grenade concept)

    I swear on my ancestors – a whole DLC set on a giant mining ship a la Red Dwarf, or in fact ANY content tying the whole thing so Red Dwarf would be phenomenal.

    I know it may seem weird but I’d love to see an ocean overhaul update to starfield with maybe underwater pois and new aquatic flora and fauna to scan. I think it would make exploring planets such as neon better as oceans are unexplorable currently.

    – jetpacks should be available from the start
    – respeccing should be a thing
    – powers should be more fun to obtain
    – lockboxes should have a higher chance at a rare weapon
