How Starfield Honours The Golden Age Of Space Exploration
A space game that’s more ‘sci’ than ‘fi’. An exploration on how Starfield evokes the wonder of the golden age of space travel. From mechanics based on theoretical science to nods to NASA greatest space missions.

Bit of a watch out at about 10:52 under the System and Plant Name section I actually mispronounce Richard Feynman as Michael Feynman. That being said, you can also find a nod to Michael Faraday as one of the system names. Big apology to Richard.

Thanks for the kind response guys! Were there any space/Nasa things you found in Starfield that I didn’t include?
If anyone’s into Resi Evil, check this one (The algorithm kinda made it so no one saw it, so the help would be much appreciated) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEnkR70r3-c
I like Starfield especially these parts. The “real” details. Not a fan of unity and the Starborn stuff. I usually ignore that stuff on repeat playthroughs
People won’t accept Starfield on its own merits. It’s not Fallout or TES. It’s so weird that people didn’t praise the strides this game made in role playing.
Personally I would like to see a real hard SF RPG set in just this solar system, with no technology that requires new physics. You could even just set it around just the moons of Saturn. That way you wouldn’t need any imaginary FTL to travel between worlds in mere hours or days. Nor do we need gravity plates when spin gravity is an option.
Decades of Star Trek have left most people thinking solar systems are small places, consisting of one world of interest, holding one homogeneous culture (or exactly two that are in an eternal conflict so trivial a single episode can change its course.)
Have a look at the wikipedia page “List of Solar System objects by size”. Also the short film “Wanderers” by Erik Wernquist (it’s on YouTube as well as other places)
Todd would say… boring is the new normal. Use both hands. 👍
If you can look past the loading screens and basically play the game the way the devs meant for you to play it, not straying too far off the beaten path (basically not playing it like it’s Skyrim), this game is an absolute gem
Thank you sir so many don’t get this game I’ve sunk a thousand hours into STARFIELD soon as I have a PS5 and it’s released on it I’m jumping back in my love for Bethesdas space game continues
Can’t wait for this game to come PlayStation and then suddenly all the hate jsut vanishes and then there’s like a million new Starfield fans
Been sharing the video on a few Starfield Discord channels. It is a great video. 🙂
With 1000 planets, they could have put in one or two alien civilisatios. They do not have to be space-faring, but instead all there is are animals and ancient Dragon word walls… I mean Starborn temples, and no other sign of the civilisation that built them.
This makes me want to reinstall a game I thought would never have my attention again. Beautiful video and especially well written and edited conclusion.
Such a beauty of a video, thanks.
I’m going to watch this whole thing tomorrow because I’m sleepy, but right off the bat I agree with your central premise. Mass Effect Trilogy is my favorite of all time, but what made Starfield special was it’s tie to our real world. I wish they had not felt the need to introduce space magic with the Starborn storyline. The more grounded UC quest line was so much better.
@10:52 don’t you mean Richard Feynman?

Awesome video. Makes me want to explore Starfield. Maybe one day it will be on Playstation.
It is ironic to hear speeches about space in that time, when the only thing that was at stake there was the pride of who will win the space race 🙂
In the end we didn’t do anytihg but winining a race, as humanity is still having petty squabbles about money, territory and other things that at this point should not really matter. We really didn’t learn anything at all in the end, and we keep not learning anything as we proceed further.
The “warp drive” from Star Trek IS an Alcubierre drive that folds space. You said “instead of”
I never really agreed with the widespread panning of the game (after what I recall being a few months of mostly warm and positive reception). I can’t help but think it was just the next thing that was popular to hate, though there are certainly some valid criticisms. Nothing about it seemed revolutionary, but I don’t think it needed it be. It’s pretty much exactly what I expected it to be: a pleasant and fairly interesting way to spend 90+ hours. I enjoyed the game’s aesthetic, both designs and score. I feel like I got my money’s worth.
The most believable part of Starfield is the space magic.
Starfield has l gotten a few “game changer” mods over the past weeks (months), like better city NPCs, special survival gameplay mods (for immersive spaceships too), new gameplay mods (CCTV cameras) etc. etc..
…
It’s finally starting to add up and is noticeable..
…
just many should be cheaper or free (as the base game was way too bare bone), still, atm Starfield is heading in a good direction (still plenty of bug fixes, QOL changes & a better 3rd-person camera mod needed.., but its headed in a good direction..)
I think if alot of folks loved this game, then please continue enjoying it.
I sadly didn’t, i sort of liked the themeing of the space craft designs, the science aspect of it. But they should of just lent more into the science aspect of it, like more completely if that makes sense? I didnt really enjoy towns for example, they looked …not so great.
I really like the setting as well. I haven’t played much of the game but that’s one of the things I like the most about it. I have only recently started playing. I loved the concept of a game where you have your own ship and fly to different planets. At first I loved it but I ran into a major frustration with navigation and space travel. What I want to do is fly from the cockpit of my ship, but the game clearly wants you to navigate mostly from the map. There’s no efficient way of navigating from the cockpit, and I can’t fathom why that is. What is more fun… sitting in the cockpit of a ship or staring at a map? And once you have your ship, outside the amazing customisation and building system, there’s no meaningful way to engage with it. You repair it easily with ship parts. The ammunition, missles and fuel don’t need restocking and I don’t think the crew need paying once you’ve hired them. The ship just becomes a glorified fast travel mechanic, which is hugely disappointing.
That aside I’m quite enjoying it. I was a bit surprised at all the criticism about it, actually. Like it has a lot of load screens, yeh like every other game I’ve played. The engine is antiquated, but I think the graphics look great. Its a visually beautiful game in terms of graphics and art design. In fact one little detail about the visuals that I adore is the wood texture on some of the furniture in Constellation. Seriously go and look. Its gorgeous.
I just noticed a couple of other little things I really like. I sat down in an arm chair in my room and after a few seconds my character sort of slumped down, relaxing in the chair. How neat is that? And I like all the little blurbs someone took the time to write in the skills explaining why spending a character skill point on shield systems, for example will actually make the shield work better.
Anyway good job with the video.
I’m over 200 hours into the game, over 10 Unity resets, with over 5,000 loading screens sat through, and I can confirm with everyone else that it’s an objectively bad game. Bethesda’s creative bankruptcy started at Fallout 3 and is still full steam ahead. I am always happy to see Slop Defender videos and delusional comments like this. Brothers, for your own sake, wake up and play a different game that’s worth your time
It was pretty cool play starfield.
Most people realize satr field is a god awful game lmfao
I’ll always give a like and a comment for Starifeld positivity.
I love Starfield. The game has some pretty glaring issues, sure, but they shouldn’t discount all of the other great things about it.
It’s nice to see some positive Starfield content for once! Thanks!
Sorry but this genuinely an awful argument. Just simply stating it’s our universe and nasa and stuff is a excuse for its uninspired aesthetic and boring gameplay and uninspired worldbuilding and overall design
I really enjoyed Starfield, even if it isn’t high on my RPG list. Perfect Nasa Punk retro futurism. Somewhat realistic space fantasy. A game about the journey and the exploration.
This is the first time I stumbled across your channel. Great video! You were spot on, you’ve described starfield exactly the way it is. Thank you for your video and positivity! I hope to see more of your video’s!
I’m not really a gamer. I pick up one new game a year (if that). My Xbox sits downstairs collecting dust. I downloaded Starfield on a whim. I get a discount on my monthly GamePass subscription, so I figured I’d better at least make use of it. I’ve been playing it just about everyday since the game was launched. I have no real point of reference, so maybe so there’s much better games out there, but this is the only one I’ve been playing. It definitely has it’s quirks, but I enjoy the whole “mods” aspect about it. Never played a game with this kind of expandability/tweaking. I know many critics have complained about it’s repetitiveness, but I’ve already found a number of mods that help reduce it’s mundane feel. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but it would seem like Bethesda’s idea here was not to build a game from “beginning to end” (although this can be achieved through the various missions and storylines), but more of a “framework” or “platform” to be “crowdsourced” and continually tweaked. Every other game I’ve ever played before has had a beginning and an end. You start as newbie, complete the quests, level-up and eventually face the final boss. After that, you put in on the shelf and look for a new game. Starfield doesn’t feel like that. Am I wrong?
This made it more boring. I’d like to stumble across a dead body with a note leading to a random Mini quest while going to abandoned radar station for the 403 time. It’s that they advertised it as replayable. It is much less replayable than Fallout 3, Fallout NV, Fallout 4, Morrowind, Skyrim. I would guess also other titles, but those are the ones I played. It is boring, town NPCs look like mongoloids. Other than completionist there is no reason to go to all planets let alone moons. They can advertise how many they want. It just means more suck. With PGC they needed more towns, more side quest, more notes, more story telling. Now as soon as next DLC comes out I’ll finish out 1st Starborn universe and go to second to play that. Im looking forward to that DLC. Shame, like Disney and others, we can’t have females shaped and look like females. Darn the woke, Sweet Baby, and that DEI jerk they brought on in charge of Characters. He made most of them look like his bulging eyed grandma.
I respect your opinion and all. Real talk though, SF is built like a game from 2010. If there wasnt insane amounts of loading screens and cutscenes for EVERYTHING, and I could actually properly use my spaceship in and out of orbit/between planets(like NMS, or Star Citizen, shit or even Elite Dangerous) I could get down with it. But you cant, and I cant. I used to LOVE bethesda, and Todd. I grew up with TES 3-5, and loved Fallout, but… they just didn’t deliver on this one. They didn’t change or grow or upgrade the way they make games. The things I could forgive in 2010(ALLL the loading screens all the time, buggy AI, hell buggy everything, clunky player characters, etc), are not things I can forgive now, and definitely not when they have all that daddy Microsoft money. I genuinely feel let down, and it hurts me to say I’ve lost hope for what I was actually excited for, TES 6. I agree on the Cozy, relaxing vibes, and personally hate the hella action all the time games. I was SO excited for the REAL science and advancements they went for, and was super hyped to have those boring times just mining on a planet or something. But again, they just lost me on the absolutely outdated creation they made, thats again buggy as all hell, and all the LOADING SCREENS. I mean man, they could have at least given us a rover…
I love Starfield. I find myself slowing down and really taking everything in when I play.
Truly amazing video!
That’s why I love Starfield, it’s a Sci Fi of a future where at least their space tech is actually very realistic and may one day be achievable in 100-300 hundred years or so.
beautiful 👏
Fantastic video. I love Starfield and I don’t think it is even slightly boring, but your video has helped me, a guy who grew up with NASA and Star Trek, see the game more clearly and appreciate it more.
This reminds me of when the Mars rover was reprogrammed to sing happy birthday to itself so sad
weird how people under this video love starfield but in another video with another title everyone hate it ,and how my youtube suggests me both
Such an excellent video. Thank you for your work.
Fucking Love Starfield!! ❤
Here to support more positive SF content.
I’ve gamed since pong. Love starfield. Top three for me. Halo fallout starfield. Love em all
This guy gets it👍🏼
“Why boring is actually good” Jesus everlasting Christ, I don’t think there is realistically a bigger cope in existence than this.
Starfield is a serotonin game in a world of dopamine hit designed team looter shooter games. It certainly has its flaws, but even if it didn’t, it would still be written off as ‘boring’ by the dopamine addicted crowd. I just enjoy it for what it is.
This is fantastic! Thank you for taking the time and considerable effort required putting this together. o7
Rather than boring, I find Starfield to be relaxing. 🙂
> Be me.
>With a technical degree working as a miner because I’m broke AF
> Find a strange rock and almost die. I saw the truth.
> Comes a random dude for the rock and pirates to steal the rock
> Got shit in my pants. Pirates shot down my team. First time i shot someome.
> More pirates are coming back, the crazy MF says I can deliver the rock with his ship to Constellation.
> Yeah sure dude. Give me the keys and fast. I’m GTFO of here.
> Come to the best metropolis of humanity and I deliver the rock.
> They offer me to stay. Got to work with the hot milf.
> Got the balls to rescue the crazy MF from pirates.
> I’m traveling through a lot of planets exploring, with a badass suit and getting along with the hot milf and the other members.
> Life is good.
> HS, I got superpowers and aliens are coming for these stones
Space adventure good this video very good.
This encapsulates the reason I have played 1500+ hours of Starfield. And will probably play another 1500. This was a beautiful piece. Thank you.
Nicely done! Thanks for sharing this with us.
The idea of Starfield is not bad, but the outcome was lackluster. The main factor was having less hand-crafted content than Skyrim, and unresponsive NPCs. Starfield’s NPCs are much less reactive and “alive” than Skyrim’s. In Skyrim, they would have schedules, react to what you did and wore, and you could enter any house. New Atlantis felt so “game-y” (and kind of ugly tbh) in comparison.
I understand if they want to start easy first but they need to start filling the skeleton now with the rest so to speak.
I love Starfield
It’s a very shallow husk of a game 😞
Bring DEREK to the Apollo landmark if you have him lol
starfield is great game
I really enjoyed your video essay. Starfield is still the game that I want to play daily.
Absolutely! I still love Starfield and it’s good to know that I’m not alone!
Starfield could have been the perfect space exploration game. But it is not boring because of the lack of elements that can be found in Mass effect as you said. It is boring because of the game mechanics, because of the copy and paste outposts, because the POI – s has most of the time nothing interesting, not even any special loots, it is boring because of the story writing feels weak and forced, because the game has no soul as ex developers just recently commented ( even they feel it that way ).
It’s good that you have a good time in the game world. It couldn’t pull me in. I really really want this game to become what we wanted and Bethesda advertised. Maybe a couple of years from now it will be by moders
Level 150 in starfield. I would be higher, but there’s a big galaxy out there. Love the video. Keep up the good work.
Great video!
Nice vid. Love starfield!
A JFK speech on top of Interstellar’s OST is shockingly inspiring. Good lord that montage made me a little teary-eyed.
Here for the starfield positivity 💪🏾🫡
Brave video idea! Love it
This video is a breath of fresh air, I’m so tired of the “other kind” of Starfield content
Thank you for your work, outstanding video!
so happy the youtube algorithm finally realized i like starfield
