Is Starfield Actually A Cozy Game?
Starfield divided players upon release but what if we’ve been judging it all wrong?
Hope you enjoy this love-letter to the settled systems. Granted this video will most likely only reach a small few, but if you do care to leave a comment, please keep it kind.

I continue to enjoy the game not quite daily, but that is not due to lack of interest. Work is REALLY starting to interfere with my gaming! LOL
I hadn’t heard the term “cozy game” before, and I’m not necessarily one to go for broad, generalized labels guiding my choices, but I agree with how you’ve characterized the game and its developer’s intentions. This is the first Bethesda game I’ve put any real time into and I truly do enjoy living in the game world. It’s just enough of a non-shooter to keep me interested. I’m not surprised to hear that the CoD / R6 / shooter gamers disapprove, but I don’t really care what THEY think about it.
I was very surprised at all the hate for STARFIELD, but as a 20-year veteran of EVE Online, I’m used to people misunderstanding the intention of a game.
Starfield’s already at a point that hints towards it having a long tail, like skyrim and fo4 before it. It’s pointless to argue favorites, Im just fact stating that it will be a long tail game.
Great video! I’ve been saying this since launch! Starfield is a “home” or “cozy” game for me and has so been since September 1st, 2023. No matter what mood I’m in, Starfield has me covered. In 2024, I went back and played BGS games from Morrowind to Fallout 4, yet I kept longing to go back to Starfield in between my playthroughs of each game. The soundtrack, hopeful future, and Nasa-punk/retro-futurist aesthetic really pulls me in. I just want to *live* and *exist* in this world BGS created, and it is why I keep going back to it after 350 hours and running through every main and side quest in the game 3+ times each. Starfield is hands-down my favorite game. It’s not perfect, but man I love it.
yeah its so cozy , almost everytime i play it , i fell asleep while being on the ship cockpit, i dont know if its a positive trait ot negative.. (especially after you hold down the back button on your controller while first person on your ship cockpit, it removes all the hud and .. you just there mesmerizing the blackest sea)
Skyrim and fallout 4 are cozy as well for me, at least. No wonder sf’s the same.
Bethesda games have always had Cozy Game tendencies. Starfield just brings that to a much larger scale and pushes certain systems further than they have in decades(since Daggerfall). The problem is the current gaming zeitgeist gets confused when you have a game labeled as an “RPG” that also has a lot of sandbox elements. When you say “RPG”, people expect a more focused and concise experience. Not a vast simulator that you are supposed to “live in” and use your imagination a bit to get the most out of. A lot of people just want to experience the story, characters, the good side quests and then be done. They want to be taken on an adventure. Not create large parts of the adventure themselves. This is how Bethesda has always been though, but for many years they were just good at disguising their games as more typical RPGs but just in an open world setting. But with this game, for better or worse, people are seeing what Bethesda’s ambitions truly are. When you play the original TES games, you see that really they were more like vast fantasy life simulators with roleplaying elements, rather than straight forward traditional RPGs like that of their peers at the time such as Baldur’s Gate or Fallout.
It 100% is. People that hate this game just have ADHD, anyone who put the time to enjoy it for what it is would know that it is quite literally one of the most sophisticated games we have received in years. There is SO much to do, so many different mechanics, so many different ways to play. Obviously, there are some issues, but what game doesnt have some issues?
Well said. I didn’t realize it while I had been playing it. I like it, but something is missing for me. It became clearer last week when I finally tried Fallout 4 – the language, characters, factions, stakes, violence and the unforgiving nature were all there in a way that I wish Starfield had. I guess, the Cozy genre is just not what I gravitate to and I need that increased drama, intensity, and consequences to relax. That’s why I bounce in and out of Xcom 2 so often.
The sandwich pirate lady told us, but we didn’t listen. It all makes so much sense now.
This was well said and wonderfully presented
After 1800+hrs of gameplay I can say that you sir, have nailed it! Thank you for a great video!
“Having choice means the player has to choose their own path”
“Because it was YOUR story, it’s a role playing game after all”
This video was already really good, but these lines made it even better. It feels nice hearing from someone who actually gets Starfield amid the strong negativity it gets. Great job on the video.
I will concede that, mechanically, Starfield resembles the cozy game genre. Tonally, you should really go exploring the derelict ships. Read the journal entries. There’s nothing calming or cozy there.
I share your observations about the empty planets. I stay away from the major quest lines and spend most of my time picking up bounty missions, surveying planets, and building ships. 3,800+ hours in so far.
There are many things that I think could have been made better, but Starfield is still pretty awesome.
I enjoyed this and I agree. I have my issues with it but it’s my game man. Got a little over 75 days worth of sailing the blackest sea and after the first couple playthroughs I definitely play it like a sandbox nowadays. I can count the number of unity jumps I’ve done on one hand, but have countless fresh starts. Many from messing with load orders but still. But you’re right, it’s very chill. You make your own fun really. I’ll keep beating BGS up for stuff to fix/add, but it’s only because again, it’s my game man. Catch a smile out there. o7
Rock On 😃 I’ve got over 3k hours in Starfield Valley. It is not for everyone, I don’t do all the facets of the game and I agree, I have lots of choices in game. It’s been hard for years to find a PC game I could even be interested in playing. I never played any of the other Bethesda games before Starfield. I played LOTRO from BETA in 2006 until 2019 when I got tired of bad patterns. Should have stopped playing it after it went Free to Play and they ruined many area’s and systems that were there at the beginning. I’m hoping that Bethesda will put more into Starfield and I hope it inspires more humans to enjoy and think about it like you did. Thanks for sharing 👍
Good points!
I find my favorite thing in starfield isnt the story but building a space mineing ship and just going out a gathering resource from asteroids
My main mods are
Starsims for space mineing
Green and gold for a vary good banking system
And some mods that make ship repairs and space port cost more
I not going to defend this game it has issues but like most BGS games mods help
It’s been my cozy game for the last two weeks I think I got more than 20 hours clocked in. My form of fishing is Pirate boarding ships using the useful morgues mod I take all of the crew members harvest them to sell to the trade authority. I told my brother I’m Space Pirate who moonlights as a bounty hunter for the UC and Freestar Collective.
Good video, edited well. I agree
You actually have some good points. I love Starfield and have over 3,000 hours in the game. Starfield has the tools for you to choose your own adventure. I was definitely a kid who made up my own pretend games out in the yard with a blanket fort, some sticks, and a couple of friends. I think that is who Starfield is aimed at.
