Of course its true. Anyone not a hopeless pony or living under a rock for the past 35 years knows this. Its Sony’s modus operandi. Create or acquire a standard, then once it gets adopted (by hook or by crook) charge large licensing fees. They killed HD-DVD by pumping closer to $10 billion into studios (as ‘marketing’ funds) to get them to adopt BD as their ONLY distribution media, and now we’re all paying a % of every BD disk we buy to sony. They tried this with Memory Stick as well and were on their way with beta, SDDS and CD-R/W before the rest of the industry banded together and stopped them. They do everything they can do hurt their competitors, everything except compete in a fair way and let the merits of their tech and products speak for itself.
The reason we don’t have RayTracing in minecraft is that sony refused to provide dev kits to Mojang so they’re still essentially using the 360/XB1 codebase.

EA pulled out of support for the DC due Sega using power vr tec rather than 3dfx which EA owned 20% off at the time…doesnt help either sony bulling developers to not publish on dc

As good as the ps2 is its the most overrated old school console. Ppl only bought that console for money hatted 3rd party games like gta San Andreas and re4 along with DVDs. You barely hear anyone say I bought a ps2 because of the great first party games made by sony.

Sega was a little dog at that point, they had messed around with add-ons for the genesis and the Saturn was a disaster.

Xbox was very new, and wasn’t taken seriously yet.

However, Nintendo and Sony had bad blood, the N64 and GameCube didn’t do so well. . . But Sony would nick developers from them (ie SuckerPunch was originally a Nintendo developer).

The whole piracy thing probably didn’t help Sega either when it came to developers.

Actually Sega still took themselves out due to money. Just look at their financial results at the time.

A string of bad decisions before the Dreamcast and the Arcade business experincing a slowdown did hit them hard. They were also spending too much money on games that weren’t selling also.

PS2 hype did play a factor but the rumor pratices that Sony did are very unfounded especially if the source is one developer’s word aganist the sea of documented evidence. If that was the case then THPS 3 and 4 wouldn’t be on xbox or ngc. GTA 3 never made it to Dreamcast due to market conditions. It was PS2 exclusive due to Sony taking the deal over MS who didn’t want the deal that Rockstar that was giving them.

For example EA didn’t make any Dreamcast games due to being burned on the Saturn and not getting the exclusive right to be the only sports brand on the system. Half Life Dreamcast was canned due to the system not being supported and issues with final polish.

Its very believable that sony would do it.

Dreamcast was one of my favorite all time consoles. I always thought it had to be something else that helped kill of that console other than the EA refusing to make games for it. Sega countered with Visual Concepts and actually made better sports games than EA. If this is true with Sony and this dev kit fiasco, then I will NEVER BUY a PS new to allow them to count that towards sales. The games will also only be bought used.

During the PS2 era I wouldn’t be surprised if and when they did as hardware was still more exotic and having a certain installbase to make it commercially more viable to go to Sony.I don’t think you could get away with it in these times while everything is much more accessible and the competition pretty much can go anywhere they want, Phones, handhelds etc etc. Nintendo was pretty hostile as well and if Sony learned from anyone it was definitely them.

I loved the Dreamcast BUT truth be told I wished my parents had got me a GameCube as well because apart from the DC we only had the Xbox. We saved money on games easily though because our Xbox had a mod chip inside which let us play pirated discs. A friend would rent blockbuster games then rip them on his old PC and sell us the copied discs for $10 a pop 😂

The Xbox 360 was literally ran off of 3rd party money hatting.

Did you seriously just say that your 3090 graphics card is better than current consoles?…………😂😂😂 dude the 3090 graphics cards are 1080p based cards, hell my 4060 graphics card is 1080p based aswell and every AAA game made since probobly 2015 has to be set to medium settings to run smoothly on my PC. Atleast with the consoles they are 4k ready with ray tracing without any tampering by the consumer at all.

With everything that Sony has done, how can anyone believe otherwise? They’ve been trying to do it to Xbox for over 20 years. They almost succeeded with Don Mattrick’s help. He was a double agent. Ummmmm could be true? We know it’s true there were verifiable claims from small retailers and game shops that Sony told them no shipment of PS2 games unless they downplayed the dreamcast.

We already know thru verified technical papers AVAILABLE at launch that Sony misrepresented the ps2s abilities and issues.

It’s beyond true that Sony did Sega dirty. They are the reason Sega has to stop the hardware business.

One of the big reasons Dreamcast failed because you could burn the disk write on cd with no problem and it worked. All of my cousin’s games like that. Not enuff people buy the games and burning them. Plus it didn’t help Sega cd and 32x failed.

As a lifelong Sega fan, and getting the Dreamcast at launch, and watching the support go away it really sucked. I read something a long time ago similar to that, something along the lines of special royalty rates for developers that Sega couldn’t match, and also what you mentioned, with the denial of developers kits for any developer who was developing on Segas Dreamcast. I remember this because I was glad when Microsoft came into the market with the Xbox, and I told my buddy I was excited for this because Sony couldn’t outmuscle Microsofts wallet like they did with Sega. But, seems like they are still winning at their persuasion tactics. One reason I haven’t been ultra supportive of Sony, and I hope Microsoft doesn’t leave the hardware side. I’ve got a ps2 , ps3, and ps4, but I get those systems way later, and Xbox is still my lead, and preferred platform

Everyone believes that the PS2 was technologically more advanced than the Dreamcast is not true! The Dreamcast was based on the Niomi hardware that is basically Sega’s most powerful arcade board at the time.

There is a “rumor” in the past that Sony owns-rights[?]/manufacture[?] most of the OG disc drives for both console, hence Nintendo went a different route to dodge a bullet.
Most PS2 users just flew to other platforms after that console gen. Selling the disc drives separately also was planned/formed on the Ps2 era.

I believe it, sony have demonstrated their underhanded business tactics for years with xbox. The only reason they failed to ruin the xbox is because Microsoft have several revenue streams and are not reliant on the xbox, having said that sony still have no answer to compete with several of the xboxs strenghs . Over he years Microsoft were more inventive and developed features so fast sony couldnt get a total upper hand eg superior online play, wide spread backwards compatibility , fast replay, avatars, award points, superior market place, games with gold, gamepass and the list goes on. sony have copied some of these features since with some success but basically not developed their business model much. Relying on if its not broke , why fix it.

They still rely on buying exclusives for their system and trying to force the competition out, they have made some great games but are now forced to release their games on pc as they have realised that the business model of the last 15-20 years is not going to cut it.

Xbox has managed to keep competative regardless what the very driven ps fans say, even after the bad xbox 1 launch that cost them so much after the 360.

Sad that sony still hold their games from releasing on xbox, as their current practices are becoming less effective and will harm them in the long run now.

I believe Microsoft entering the video game business with Xbox is the reason Sega stopped making consoles.

EA was never going on dreamcast, they had beef with eachother over SEGA using a different chip to a chip EA had invested in and expected SEGA to use it. Then the situation over SEGA Sports where EA would only agree to make dreamcast games if SEGA didnt have sports games from other companies on the system. SEGA refused. Its well documented by now.

Actually most SEGA fans believed sony sabotaged Dreamcast, but we also blamed SEGA misteps as well. It explains why a lot of SEGA teams refused to make games for PS2 and went ffor xbox and gamecube instead when SEGA went third party when the teams were still semi independent.

What sony did back in the 90’s went unchecked. Back then, people only thought of the video game market as a toy for kids. So no one really cared that sony buying all these studios.

That’s why Nintendo left Sony with it’s snake plan.

Anyway, Xbox series X and S is garbage that’s why it Fail.
