Kyle calling it Interstellar kind highlights how generic the title is. Like, what was it with sci-fi games needing some vague name that doesn’t even mean anything? Destiny, Mass Effect (I know what it is, has NOTHING to do with the day-to-day of the game), Concord, Anthem, Chorvs, Starfield, Intergalactic. Should have called the game Space Baldy. Instantly iconic.

nightreign is only for the fans of the combat. and thats strictly it. what surprises me is that it does not have any pvp which is what a decent proportion of the same people who like the fromsoft combat are very much into. hope they add it in a patch and we can finally have proper full on free for alls with a bunch of people especially because they capped the limit lower than older games on elden ring for phantoms and invaders. also a low stakes online only game is an excellent opportunity for from to finally fix their notoriously bad netcode and anti cheat systems after that huge kerfuffle around dangerously bad code in from games right before elden ring launched. they turned off online in ds3 and dsr for like a good while to fix all the vulnerabilities.

As a professional idiot (Bethesda fan), Starfield was so boring from the get go. Even the name is bland. The style is generic. There is just simply no substance to it, and it constantly confuses me as to why they would just abandon Elder Scrolls almost completely for over 13 years at this point.

I feel like the only person on the planet that genuinely loves the “NASApunk” aesthetic of Starfield. Intergalactic being the big announcement of TGA was kind of anti-climatic. It feels like Cowboy Bebop ran through a Guardians filter without any of the things that made either of those good; almost has a Ready Player One vibe. And yeah the action and enemy at the end looked borderline generic. Just doesn’t feel that special. (Animation was excellent though) I used to love Naughty Dog but something about their output in the recent years just feels cynical. Also, lol at all the culture war tourists in the comments that can’t discuss anything without using their tired set of buzzwords.

I thought the same about the robot in the trailer too, it feels like it belongs to a completely different game, looks too rounded and cartoonish it’s ridiculous

Weird, I tend to think Starfield ships look very specifically from that game, compared to other sci-fi IPs. I don’t think snapping Porsche on the back make thats ship look more recognizable from that game, the ship itself looks like a F-Zero or Wipeout cruiser.

I was intrigued by the trailer, but less of it showed off a game you could imagine playing than I think the Starfield ne did. But Starfield wasn’t that great, so I imagine Intergalactic will be better (I say this as someone who liked Uncharted but never really liked Last of Us).

I think the asymmetrical design of the Robot actually makes it unique and stand out. The 3 arms (one with a shoulder guard) and the fact that it’s weight is overloaded to the top half to the point it needs one of the arms to balance itself is very interesting!

I really cannot agree enough with the point about companies trying to sell us franchises instead of actual individual games. Remember when games getting sequels and comics and other media was a treat and not a threat? When a studio had to make one solid, well rounded game and that game’s individual quality and success was what motivated more content and media? I know cross media promotion has always been a thing, even Mario had cartoons and comics before they had even nailed down his color scheme, but its just so exhausting to have studios and companies threatening us with huge costly franchises before the game’s even out of the concept phase.

So, I believe that anything else that comes from Elden Ring doesn’t need to be huge or spectacular; that should be saved for the next Souls-like game they would be working on. At this point, FromSoft should be allowed to create any weird spin-offs, trying things they couldn’t put into the main game. The success of Elden Ring definitely offers them that opportunity.

I think the main thing that Starfield does that Intergalactic fails at is trying to push a new sci-fi aesthetic. The main parallel I saw between Concord and this new game is that it’s ANOTHER Guardians of the Galaxy rip-off. “Relatable space travel” feels played out, even if Nasapunk was a flawed aesthetic it was something a lot more novel and engaging than what you can feasibly chalk up to just another Marvel movie ripoff game.

Millennial bait is so easy to make and so pervasive in media that it’s a cliche. To the point where Kyle’s line about media training in the general populace is a sentiment that oozes a palpable pastiche energy.

Yeah, Intergalactic discourse is getting too obssesed with the main character design, but the truth is that the teaser is just mediocre. Kyle is completely right that the robot at the end was shockingly boring and unoriginal.

Naughty Dog is my favorite developer but I’m going to be honest. If this game was not made by Naughty Dog i would not care about the game itself that much. The teaser did not show how the game is going to be played (is just an action souls like/jedi survivor combat style game?, do you shoot 3rd person too like in uncharted?) and is not explaining where the scenario is going to be played (just a planet??, how is that planet? is open world??, does the ship even matter??) . Not even the story hook seems that interesting (another bounty hunter searching for someone because reasons…).

I hope years of unjustified online hate haven’t rendered Naughty Dog incapable of picking up gems of serious critique and advice such as ones being dropped here.

I have a total interest level flip on Intergalactic and Elden Ring Nightreign. The former’s trailer did little for me, while the latter is full of possibilities.

I think i might just hate space as a setting, i feel like a lot of people might be, i think the people making space games think the same way with their seeming focus on the ships feeling lived in. Space is a lot of nothing, seems like the best examples of it reduce it to essentially loading screens (even in tv and movies), its hard to get excited about when its not new. And theres so many space games and tv shows and movies now, the idea of 1 space game is hard to get excited about, let alone at least 3. My brain immediately just goes “ill wait, if its cool ill get the inevitable collection edition”

Story leaked…not good

I’m sure the last thing Sony wants is to have Intergalactic be compared directly to concord. Unfortunately it does give off the same vibes. The main characters personality also comes off as unlikable. Which is impressive given the short length of the trailer.

Intergalactic lacks a recognisable aesthetic or hook which is why the main takeaway from that trailer is brand names since they are the only thing that distinguishes it from any guardians of the galaxy inspired scifi media from the last 10 years. The robot at the end could exist in halo or doom or destiny or a billion other contemporary scifi IP and because of that, even the relatively played out 80s nostalgia + scifi identity they are pushing for feels skin deep. Ueada’s game is the polar opposite, it shows almost nothing but every single element is unique to it and ueda’s games.

The absurd Nameless King reveal caused way way more people talking than anything Intergalactic did.

I think people are being way too hard on Nightreign. It’s clearly a fun side project, not meant to be scrutinized as intensely. I think it should be viewed as an inbetweener game from the main series. Looks fun to me and I think Fromsoft is trying to tell people that they can make quick fun games too. It’s not that serious.

It *must* be okay to have a black woman main character without controversy. Every single person upvoting and sharing the ‘upgrade’ where they whiten her skin needs to get a grip and stop being so dysfunctional.

I kinda agree with you on the robot design. Its primarily the face thats wrong. It doesn’t exude any emotion, not even apathy. Thats a problem because it doesn’t move rigidly enough to feel THAT robotic. So it really needs a face that makes it look like it has a total disregard for your life. Something thats threatening to some extent. I disagree on the red eyes thing tho, those always work because they are so visible even in the middle of action. Bloodborne knew what it was doing with giving them lit up eyes when they hold your blood echos.

What are you doing!? Who centrally aligns their numbered list? It should be left aligned! 😒

Practically all the aesthetic elements are basically lifted wholesale from Cowboy bebop, and that’s very cool, but it’s not a hugely imaginative angle.
Funnily enough, the one part that doesn’t seem Cowboy bebop inspired is the robot enemy and the polaroid vision board.

The animation for Jordan in Intergalactic is so damn good, I’ve only watched the trailer a few times but seeing Naughty Dog’s progress over the years since Drake’s Fortune with human characters it’s an impressive leap.

Kyle talks about the “Starfield: Official Teaser Trailer” here, which is technically not actually the reveal teaser. The reveal teaser came out years prior (Starfield – Official Announcement Teaser) and interestingly, that one is also similar to Intergalactic’s, specifically the first part with the shot of the planet. But anyways Naughty Dog is just awesome in making trailers, I’m happy that Kyle also appreciates this one. The bad reception Intergalactic got is crazy.

I love that point about ND approaching the brands instead of the other way around. I was a bit annoyed by the brands the first time I saw the trailer but I dunno, the more I thought about the more it fits the general vibe of this game. And your point makes it make sense, I guess.

Also i have to point out how different but the same the music are in both trailers. Both is making you want to explore whatever space the trailers are showing, but Intergalactic has a more sinister and mysterious tone, promising something that will surprise you. While Starfield is almost triumphant, as if it’s excited to give you the chance to be in their world.

You’re so right about nightreign missing the mystery. Whole time I was watching the train I was thinking “oh that’s the crevasse where patches is”, “oh that’s the area north of stormgate”. I spent so long crawling over that map that the prospect of going over it again with semi-randomised enemies and loot sounds more exhausting than exciting.

Porsche do seem to like being associated with ‘cool’ futristic games as they’ve put branding in Cyberpunk and Overwatch as well, which is interesting since car brands generally stay in realistic car games.

The only only other slightly weird one I can think of being Mercedes in mario Kart

I think it’s a really cool idea that Intergalactic is set in an alternative version of the 1980s. So it is sometime in the 1980s, therefore we have all the 80s brands, and the aesthetic of 80s computers etc, but the technology is so much more advanced than it was in our actual 1980s. It’s just a cool unique idea. Besides, I love the 80s, what should I say.

Anyone else getting sick of all the anti-woke culture war slop channels on youtube? Feels like YT’s algorithm loves them and they dominate the discussion around literally every game that comes out. It’s no longer about whether or not a game is good, it’s about whether slop youtubers can find a way to monetize anti-woke manlet rage.

I think there might be a chance that Stefield will have a redemption story arc at some point in the franchise. The game at launch suffered from all sorts of technical issues and perhaps lack of content. Which are issues that have been addressed with updates. If No Man’s Sky can do a 180, I think there is a chance for Starfield.

I’m sure Intergalactic will be cool for what it is. I don’t have anything really negative to say about it. The CD Jukebox bit is a direct homage to the 1988 film Akira. So is the red jacket. I feel long since burnt out of 80’s sci-fi.

Naughty dog have been on a downward trajectory since the departures of Amy Hennig and then Bruce Straley.

Intergalactic opens with some cool, colourful, long-haired anime babe shooting dinosaurs. I’m thinking, “Cool, I’m in.” Then it pans away to this bald, tattooed woman, woman with an insufferable attitude, and what can I say? “Go back, I want the anime babe.” There’s no recovery from this, Kyle. They made a character cooler than their lead character and there’s no undoing that. Colourful anime babe is a shadow over the entire production.

I am still surprised with the hate on intergalatic. Like I get being sick of tough female protagonists, or sci fi games in general. However, Naughty Dog has a pretty good track record (even with whatever you feel about The last of Us Part II) and I just didn’t get negative vibes from the game yet. That said, I am super unlikely to play it, not too much of a gamer.

When I hear “franchise” it makes me feel like “why should I bother with the first game when the second one will be better?”
