Hopefully it can run on 4 sticks of RAM at 6000MT/s or higher.
@ 0:25 you mean like you dying your hair bwahahahahaha
5-7% improvement, 25% more expensive.
Why are people hype?
It’s $500 it’s not a gift, it just what should be expected if you pay $500.
1:00 About that launch… The same people that were complaining that Zen 4 ran too hot are now bitching that Zen 5 isn’t fast enough.
“It’s 2024 and my computer isn’t like the one on Star Trek, dammit!”
Maybe these people should apply for engineering jobs at AMD and show them how it’s done.
tears
Rip Intel 😊
thanks for including 1440p and 4k when it seems liek the rest of the world ignores it… but i really wish you would have compared another gpu like the RTX3080 in there as well. sux how the entire review industry is either reviewing low and medium settings at 1080p and or only rtx 4090 ignoring that the rest of the world still has “affordable” gpus and we are all wondering if/when there are performance uplifts in the mid-high tier for upgrades
AMD’s gift to scalpers.
Why do you keep comparing Intel 285K if there is 14900K?? 14900K is suddenly banned? Is it a mandatory requirement of AMD to compare with 285K, otherwise you will not get the processor?
All this does not look very fair and is misleading.
Also include the 5800X3D because people upgrading will minimally be coming from there.
I think your future Rockstar Games like future Grand Theft Auto and future Red Dead Redemption games you will see a difference just because the engine will be optimized for newer consoles as well
Wendell it would be interesting to also see its overall performance compared to a stock configured 7950X-3D
Wendell need you to figure out how to get 128GB going on it at 6000 or higher.
I gave this CCD to CCD Bridge Die idea to @AMD months ago soooo 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
@Level1Techs
9900X3D and 9950X3D 🤔🤔🤔 🤫🤫🤫🤫>
64MB (up to 128MB) 3D V-Cache (v3.0) With Inf. Fabric Bridge die 🤭🤗🤫 🤔🤔🤔🤐😙😙(aka Chiplet) 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤫🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐 under both CCD0 AND CCD1
in other words a 3D v cache chiplet + Inf fabric (Like a silicon Interposer) :hmmm 🤔🤔🤔 🤫🤐🤔 🙃 😉 Allowing CCD > CCD High bandwidth & Low Latency Communication 🤔
aka. CCD0 to CCD1 cache to cache caching lol 😛
you know caching the cached L3 data that isn’t needed but saved in the bridge chiplet and or moved/copied over to CCD1 to save once used cached data then once this data is needed again it just pulls it from CCD1 back to CCD0 and not penalty as if it needed to go back to the DDR5 HMMM 🤔🤔 🤐🤐🤐🤐 🤫🤫🤫🤫🤫🤫🤭🤗🤑🤑🤑🤑😝😝😝😝
@Level1Techs

Which chipset would be best
AM5 NEEDS A NEW I/O Die DAMNIT…. AND A NEW MB CHIPSET BASED ON THE NEW I/O DIE… NOT THE CURRENT GARBAGE I/O DIe ( AND PROMONTORY 21 Chip$et) I WANT MORE GEN4 LANES…. More like THREADRIPPER GOD-DAMNIT- @AMD
it seems 7800X3D is much better than 9800X3D as the new CPU consumes much much more power to achieve the same FPS.
But does it out perform 4090?
Fantastic footage as ever Wendel!, also a nice word in for the 7900 XTX,here me with a 5800X3D and a 6800 XT heck I’m happy than ever, but the 9800X3D is surely a direction I want to explore in May of 2025, great innovations are finally coming round, that with the Navi 48 which I think will be named the Radeon RX 8800 XT will be a very nice date correct package, as I have done with my 5800X3D and it’s Navi 21 XT, so with that I am skipping ZEN4 & Navi 31 XTX.
What would be cool is if Intel & AMD bring back the HEDT platform, aka High End DeskTop series, Intel did this with LGA-1366, LGA-2011 & LGA-2066. AMD did have Threadripper but for all I know they ever had a HEDT line, so might be interesting for both intel &A MD to bring back these kind of systems just to widen choice.
It doesn’t matter how extremely desirable the 9800X3D performance is……there will always be someone on the internet who thinks the $30 price increase is outrageous. It’s absolutely unforgivable that the hottest product on the market is THIRTY DOLLARS MORE!!! [Insert unhinged rants about corporate greed]
I think amd needs to Up their L1 and especially L2, intel Raptorlake has 2x the L2 / thread and Arrwo lake has 6x as much L2 and 2.7 times as much L1 per thread when compared to AMD’s last 3 Generations (Zen3-5) (Dont know Zen2’s specs of of the top of my head)
Too bad I can’t buy one at MSRP. It’s a waiting game for me to get one now.
I’ve seen 45 seconds and this is my favorite video I’ve seen all week.

Man, I hope you keep explaining to the misinform and persistent users that testing on higher resolutions is not worth it. Just look at the results, all that testing for 1440p and 4k and pretty much you can infer that yes, the 9800x3d is definitely the best cpu comparatively just from the 1080p results alone.
oh look at 1440p and 4k they are not that much different……..people who are getting it cause they think its gonna give double fps in 1440p and 4k sure are gonna be disappointed because they don’t understand wtf they are doing! i’m sure they’ll find some other reason to try and justify the purchase though.
Thank you very much for testing 1440P! Very useful to see whether the CPU is worth it
If I game at 3440×1440 with 7900XTX, upgrading from 9900K, it seems like 7800X3D would be more cost effective than the 9800X3D?
Should we wait to see the 9950x3d version?
I looked for Level1 linux. Last post was 2017?
Your intros are getting amazinger
i come here after watching linus video… i didnt even finish his video… how suck linus can be right now… im glad i come here…
thank you for including some of frametime… its far better indicator than fps if u reach 100+ fps…
i once use intel 6th gen then 1st ryzen out… then i choose r5 1600… intel 8th was higher fps at that moment but i was happy getting 1600 coz the consistency in frametime… playing dota and csgo with stuck stuck frame even just milisecond can make u got emotional damage
Sorry my guy Intel suck and amd is the man
Love the intro 😂😂😂😢😢😅
Thank you so much for 4k benchmarks. I have a 7950x3d and a 4090 with a 4k monitor. I knew there was going to be little to no gains in 4k but it’s nice to see that and reassure myself that it’s not worth the upgrade.
THANK YOU for 1440p and 4k testing!
I would love to see the 9950X3D with both chiplets X3D ^^ that would be an absolut gaming titan!
Wish you’d have run these benchmarks against 13/14 gen Intel. This new Intel Ultra chip just isn’t working atm.
What would be considered a good secondary timing for a platform like this?
Im still waiting for AMD to relese the gpu gift to replace amd 580 for 150 bucks and 4 times faster and no “cut” for lisa or shareholders added
4k FPS is literally margin of error but Derrrrr I bought $500 CPU to play games at 1080p at least if I wanna game at 1080p I’ll have all the FPS reeeeeeeeeee
I have a 7800x3d got it for $290 with stacking discounts this year… I will be building a itx pc for travel later next year so I may move the 7800x3d into the itx pc and replace with 9800x3d
Thank you!
Moonlight Sonata.
His brother was from Corinthia in Spain… he made it up because it sounded elegant…. no leather is named that. He was correct though, great sales gimmick.
I have a 7950X3D + XTX for software development and fun. It blows my mind that the 9800X3D is 13-18% faster in code compile in the Phoronix battery. If AMD puts V-Cache on both CCDs for the 9950X3D I might convince myself that I need it. If AMD has gone ahead and binned the absolute snot out of the CCDs that gets used for the 9950X3D so it’s even closer in max boost to the 9950X than the 9800X3D is to the 9700X then I WILL convince myself that I need it.
If only we could buy one…
God you don’t appreciate Level1’s non click bait titles until you look at the rest of the tech youtubers.
Is the 7900xtx worth $200 over the 7900XT?
Thanks! Great video!
I wonder how it would perform in a highly contentious scenario – multiple memory-intensive workloads running in parallel, or in VMs. How different would it be from a similar same-core, same-tech part without 3D cache?
While folks may be disappointed that the averages were not increased by an insane amount, I am sitting here blown away by the uplift in lows! This is freaking bonkers and it is truly awesome!
Love the intro. Moonlight Sonata was a great choice <3
At 4:00 or so, for the cinebench 2024 results, is the bottom supposed to say fps?
It’s interesting that Microsoft had something called “user-mode thread scheduling” in Windows 7 to Windows 10, and they removed it in Windows 11.
7800X3D guys unite!
Can I run Windows 10 with the new 9800x3d? I have a custom build and don’t really like the features of Windows 11.
Was able to sneak in a pre order online before they were sold out, the scalpers are already jumping on these hard
So basically not worth an upgrade if you already have a good cpu and game at 4k.
I ordered one at my local store and I will pick it up when it comes by 🙂
Correction, it’s a gift for good wealth enthusiastic gaming people.
I would like to see like a six core Ryzen 5 9500x3d.
err, chiplet latentcy ?
i went to best buy and saw 9 out 10 systems had intel cpus , 1 machine had 5800x on it , so i guess OEMS are still on intel payroll , not a single zen4 cpu or zen5 syatems for sale . sales dude there said , intel is faster in eveything and he said avoid Amd as they can crash , lol wtf , he was fat sweety guy , typical intel fanboy i guess.
i remember when intel ceo said , amd is in rear view mirror and never will in front again ever , lol
i bet hes eating his own fist , while 13th and 14th gen crashing and failing , now new 285k even slower than last gen , lol ,
oh my , its disaster for intel , worried about intel fanboys , well i bet they vist userbenchmarks to feel little better where they show 13600k is better than 9800x3d , wtf .
The two groups that is the most satisfying to watch cry:
1) Kamala Harris supporters,
2) Intel gaming fans.
I’m in tear feasting heaven!
I am hoping the 7900XT drops to $600usd or below this Black Friday. I am pefectly happy with the 5600X3D, for now. Going with the AM4 platform back in 2018 was the best PC gaming decision I ever made.
Now getting one is the challenge at that price.
Hey can you do a video for the best Ram for this platform?
look forward to the xtx vid. still on the fence about actually trying linux for gaming / general use and trying to get OC settings and overlays seems like a lot of faff
Gift? Yeah nice gift, I just spend 6,700 Norwegian Krones for it😂
for $500 they can keep it, it aint that good over last gen
nice – so i buy this, plug it in and it plays games?
… ah no u need a gpu
so i buy an AMD gpu and it plays games?
… ah NO – what are u dumb – u need a 4090!
so how much…2 play games
..oh come on man 4090 is like 2k – and the 3xD is like 500$ – just go get it!
so how much is playstation!?
Is it finally beyond only making a difference in 1080p gaming though?! Soooooooo over gaming cpu headlines after years of that bs.
Me: finally upgrading from my Core i9 HEDT that’s still 14nm and uses 500W…
Goodbye space heater you will be missed
That intro was perfect 😂
5600x/5800x/5900x gang our time has come
Looking at the 4K results, I still don’t see the value to upgrade.
No, its a gift to scalpers and overclocking parasites that are worse than btc miners. Making chips unavailable and raising the cost just cause they want to feed a stunted ego about some benchmark results.
YESSS THANK YOU A REVIEW WHO ACTUALLY DID 1440p
What if you have a 7950x? Is it actually with it then?
No doubt this is a fine CPU, with significant progress over the previous generation and obviously more innovative than Intel. But I don’t understand how the entire community can be so enthusiastic about it, before we know the price. For 400$ it might be fantastic. For 600$ less than average.
Have I missed something?
I love the intro way way too much, you made my day with that. As one of your resident Linux using fans who is currently sitting with a 7900XTX – please do a Level1Linux video with more of the 9800X3D paired the 7900XTX setup. Honestly this is making me feel like I really did jump the gun and pick up a 9950X – I do mixed things on my computer but man, the gains on the X3D is so large that I’m actually legit considering getting it and move the 9950X to my future homelab server instead. But I’d love to see how the future 9900X3D and 9950X3Ds will look, I play a lot of Stellaris and other similar games (shoutout to Dwarf Fortress, Factorio etc) those gains would be real nice. If you can make a demanding Factorio benchmark (from a save game of very large scale factory) I’d be over the moon.
performance gains dont allign with power draw gaming making this a utter duissapointment in my view. they apear to have pulled a intel and people are cheering on it. As for the 285 i think intel messed up with the architecture a little as the ecores in between p cores seems to be a new thing and its potentially causing latency issues as the latency on this chip is terrible.
Intel chose few years ago to promote their CPUs running “The Riftbreaker” boasting best FPS, how 9800X3D fares?
My good sir, I would game at 1440p, but to be truthful, the CPU is very unlikely to be my problem. That is why the 9800x3D doesn’t excite me, CPU’s aren’t irrelevant to gaming but is it really gonna matter with my 6650XT and eventually 7700XT? Doubtful.
You may be the only person who has tested the 9800x3d with cudimms. Definitely add that in tags or something because i was looking high and low for anyone testing with cudimms and came up short.
This is the most cultured review for a pc part I have seen in recent memory. Casual references to some fancy leather, moonlight sonata .. and it worked. Bravo , Sir! And you included 1440p results and made the comparisons uncluttered. Definitely the best 9800x3d review out there … and i have seen about 5 of them in full.
P.S 18:10 that though was under the belt… i remember kids in my college using that sign when horsing around it means nothing (good)in some cultures haha
Appreciate incorporating 1440 and 4k, but nobody owns Intel core ultra and 7800x3d owners aren’t likely upgrading. Need 7000 non 3d chips, 5000 chips, Intel 13th and 12th Gen for comparison. Basically very few people own any of those chips so hard to interpret value
Rest in Piss Intel.
So no performance upgrade in 4k. Guess I’m keeping my 5900x a bit longer.
I can’t believe nobody has mentioned this little aspect of this chip yet. I thought it was obvious, but still no reviewer has mentioned it.
They shave down the inert silicon on the top of the CCD to get it to fit to the same height as the normal Zen 5. This means there is less inert silicon between the circuitry and the heat spreader, thus it can be cooled more effectively than the regular Zen 5 chips. The heat it generates will be whisked away faster with adequate cooling, thus it can maintain higher clocks in the normal range than regular Zen 5 chips. Have you noticed that these are staying right up at top boost clocks almost all the time, even in all core workloads? What other Zen 5 chip does this? None. With this thing, the better the colling, the better it performs.
“AMD’s Gift to Gamers!”
– No sane gamer buys a 9800X3D to play at 1080p ffs, lol…
– The savvy gamer knows that when playing at 1440p or especially 4K, the difference between even a 5800X3D and 9800X3D is minimal. Save money and stay on that AM4 platform with a 5800X3D, or if on AM5, buy a 7800X3D. The 9800X3D is only ‘good’ for kindergarten bragging at that kindergarten resolution of 1080p.
Every video on this platform needs to have “Wendel Wendelling” segment.
was there not a security scare about SMT? that’s why I think there was a note go around to disable it in bios to mitigate the problem (I could be wrong)
3:30 Although they did not increase the VCache, they did bump the L1 cache from 512kb to 640kb. 🙂
Always a good time when Wendel is Wendelling!
Thanks for the laughs this morning!!!
I cannot wait for the 9950X3D and hopefully get some of that multi core performance back that’s lacking from the 9800X3D
Need a mobile 15-30 Watt chip with 3D cache also on the GPU for handhelds.
Nice job stealing title from Hardware Unboxed… You couldn’t come up with one of your own!?
👍
I have seats made from an elephant’s ball sack! LOL The most supple gray leather available! I have a machine running identical hardware as my windows machine, it is running Ubuntu and the speed and latency is not even in the same category! My god I wish I could switch to linux full time!
what even is AMD… an A620 should not be viable.
Hi Wendel! Once upon a time in history we added an Arithmetic Logical Unit into the CPU. What if we seperate the CPU into two slot on the mobo for the future? Can that be the next jump up? Heat spread, efficiency jump, etc.! Or no relevance for the idea? On the other hand when we will see virtualization using that 3D cache, like Proxmox, XCP-NG, and others?
Number Five is Alive Again!
awesome intro Wendell 😉 thanks for the review!
I don’t see no gifts when that costs $450
13:02 That’s an odd recommendation. I would say the 4080S is a better choice than the 7900XTX given that they are now about the same price. In my market, they are the same. But even with a difference up to $50, the 4080S is still an obvious choice.
Arty intro. Love it.
Can someone help me understand? I’m looking at the benchmark graphs specifically at 1440p and 4K. Does this mean it performs the same or as close as a 7800x3D at those resolutions?
Thank you for being one of the only channels testing these CPU’s at 4K.
There’s no need to double-stack Vcache. There should be enough surface area to cramp 192MB in the current silicon with all the TSVs under the CCD. Thermals should still be fine. The Vcache is not running hot.
Thanks for testing 7900XTX at 4K. I’m sure upgrading from 5900X will have some impact at 4K. 5-10% maybe.
Looking forward to 9950X3D for AI workload. Maybe I will buy a second 7900XTX for extra 24GB VRAM. AI loves RAM. ROCm performance in WSL and Windows is great.
Will have to buy a good X870 motherboard so I can run 4x 32GB DDR5 6000MT/s ram.
You say it’s a gift to gamers but I just checked my mailbox and nothing 🙁
ily
04:54 : Proof Wendell is a cyborg. Caught him short circuiting out of excitement
How well would the 9800X3D fair vs the 7950x for software like Stata?
There is so many problems on 24H2… Stuff like the power menu not working properly from the Start menu, really janky/flakey game behaviour, chromium/electron things just being *SHYTE*
Come on AMD!
9960X3D and 9965WX3D
9970X3D and 9975WX3D
9980X3D and 9985WX3D
IT DOESN’T NEED A CONTACT FRAME EITHER
the one thing not talked about here is the temps in gaming, which are amazing! they increased the max temp and it runs cooler then the 7800x3d in games so serious bonus time there
AMD WOW GOOD YES!!
Oh yes what an intro!
thanks for the review gg mm
For those who are lazy 😘
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corinthian_leather
Thanks for including 4k results. I understand why reviewers do 1080p testing but it’s still nice to see what the 1% lows look like at higher resolutions. I wish more reviewers would start including these in their reviews.
For those wondering about the Corinthian Leather deep cut… just youtube search this:
Ricardo Montalbán Chrysler Cordoba “Corinthian Leather” (1980)
So, for best of both worlds, and if you have to update, wait for 9950X3D.
I have watched many reviews on this game and your F1 nunbers are lower than all the other reviews. That is odd.
Thanks Wendell, your enthusiasm for tech is always refreshing
Sorry homie your dated electronic elevator music intro upset me for reasons I cant explain lmao
I skipped to the chapter labeled “Wendel Wendelling.”
A fellow 7900XTX fan! I have the Sapphire Nitro and it’s not just fast, it’s the best looking GPU so far.
It looks like my 9900-k is ready to retire.
Sooo, dual vcache for 99 and 9950x3d?
I say you keep Cyberpunk’s benchmark in. Just think of it like a 3D Mark synthetic benchmark. Interesting, but not a reflection of reality. And yet… still worth showing.
wel tha si all good but this haz to wel be betre fro 3 grnrnretion more of intel exprimemt genretion .do be tolty real
It’s not a gift it is way over priced.
2k and 4k testing, you are a legend amongst men.
Safe to assume if you are using 4k DLSS / FSR you’d still gain cpu vcache benefits from the game being rendered at 1440p then upscaled?
I really liked this box art
Lmao. Who is making these intros!?
amd (lol leaving that typo in) can someone please give us a superclip?
Nice intro for this video
“Neat”
Flabberghasted more by how much faster these 4090 frames are than the 7900XTX. 50%+ leads???
Friendship ended with 285K…
Very much love the skits, keep them up.
A month ago I was reading coping comments that “just wait, 285K with 8600mhz and Zen 5% is through.”
Rome has fallen for intel truly, this is the widest they’ve let the gap be in 20 years
Whenever I hear Ricardo Montalban’s name the first thing I think of is “Carne Asada”
Switching to Linux for gaming was definitely a good choice. The initial investment to learn how modding games works with the additional middle ware wine/proton has definitely cost a few nerves and lots of time. But I think, overall, it’s worth it.
Ill stick with my 8800X3D till next gen
Man I feel inadequate with my lowly 7800x3d.
“…ray tracing is cool but it only has slightly more meaning than….’rich corinthian leather’…” – PREACH. The most pointless performance suck in the history of gaming. “Hairworks” 2.0.
Overall a strong generation leap for AMD.
“Canada Wet?” That explains it. For a more refreshing experience, try Canada Dry.
cool but going to be sticking with my 7800x3d but if I was building new yes 9800x3d
And there is a good reason people are buying 4080s and 4090s over the 7900 xtx . $1800 dollars or not I’ll take a 5090 over a 7900 xtx any day of the week.
Really excited to see the 9950X3D. It’s actually pretty easy to fix 7950X3D problems with Process Lasso IMO so I can’t wait.
That Beethovan Sonata no. 14 is an absolute banger (moonlight sonata)
Thank you, Wendell. 🙏🏼
Now… How do we stack L1 and L2 cache?
Now someone buy me one
“I like what they’ve done to my car” 😀
We need more Wendell Wendelling
Ah, the Crysler Cordoba ads. 🤣
I am really glad you benchmarked more resolutions instead of including big charts with tons of cpus to make the 9800x3d look better at 1080p.
I think it is too easy for people to forget that anyone spending nearly 500 dollars on a “gaming” cpu is not likely to be playing at 1080p still. Unless they are professional e sports players anyway.
No other reviewer I watched even so much as mentioned that 1080p with a 4090 is not a common gaming scenario.
Can’t get the discord link to work 🙁
Wendell gettin’ crazy with the cheese whiz on the intro!
-bZj
Is their a mobo list or easy way to tell which won’t need bios updates to boot with this? I dont have another am5 cpu to update with
Are you going to run Linux gaming benchmarks as well?
Hey, I actually like and play Forspoken still….
Awesome review. Gives me hope for an absolutely legendary dual CCD monster when the 16 core drops. It would be really dope to get the cache on both CCD’s. Fingers crossed.
I got my sapphire nitro+ 7900xtx for $730 on Amazon brand new, sold and shipped by Amazon. Thanks AMD
Neat!
https://youtu.be/KswGlkrNhP0?t=395 Does this chart show that the integrated graphics on the 9800x3d is faster than a 7900xtx??
I can’t justify paying $480 for a 8 core processor that’s only good for gaming. Although they’re more now because scalpers bought them.
I’ll wait for the 9950 x3D but I’m very happy AMD got another winner maybe 7xxx x3d prices will go down as I just checked and their prices kept increasing since Intel was exposed the 7800x3D is +100$ from MSRP here borderlands 3 apparently gained 100fps between my current 7950x and the 7800x3d that’s crazy can’t wait to see my uber modded skyrim on x3D
Couldn’t agree more on 7900 XTX. Very close to 4090 for half the price. Ray tracing is a non factor, more of a marketing gimmick to me.
A gift to gamers would be a 349-399 dollar price 😅
Best chapter title ever. Keep calm and carry on Wendelling
Scatterbench got his to 5675mhz, undervolted.
GN Steve tried to make a Sportsball analogy. I like blowing up the launch pad better 😉.
All gamers in AMD team, 7-zippers in Ultra Oxidation team
Oh the dual X3D CCD will be fun to see in games, we’ll see how scheduler treats it and per game performance. With improved cache, can retain very good clocks with it now, though I’d expect scheduler to always try to keep the game in 1 CCD though. Or if maybe a game does have higher performance with more cores and well optimized with least cross CCD talk required.
Using 7800X3D and 7900XTX it’s great for sure, can easily last a while that’s for sure.
Now for future architectures if they could make 16c in single CCD keeping the non-c core type, even without SMT if it can make sense, I’d like such a chip.
I love the intro 😂
That wonderful 7900XTX Taichi White!
*glances down towards tower….
Hmmm, looks even better running. 😊😊
thanks for the intro that did make me laugh after a rough day and thanks for the good review =)
CPUs are now way faster than GPUs for gaming. They are basically waiting for their power to be unlocked.
Cool cool, a little expensive though. If you have a set budget for PC hardware I’d rather go with a “slower” CPU around ~200-250$ and invest those 250$ in a bigger GPU.
–>BTW: Would be really nice if there was a video about Zen5 motherboards and what RAM to choose for gaming!!!
“Wendell Wendelling…” rofl 😀
Bahahaha that intro.
I would love to see a cpu with two stacks or a 96mb stack getting that L3 up to 128MB or 160MB. Older games that sometimes cannot hit high framerates when there are a lot of units on screen benifit a lot from X3D.
Nice shirt.
9950X 3D?
A $500 gift for 8 cores in 2024 lol…
GOOD GOD, I’M OLD!!! I got the Ricardo Montalban reference 😮😮😢😢😂😂
I bet they will keep stacking more levels of progressively slower/bigger/cheaper cache in the future, maybe even some DRAM at the bottom.
Awesome news! Now i’m really, really curious about the 9900- and 9950x3D.
Did you try already and test how the 9800x3D performs at 7800x3D level? That would be really interesting to see how much cooler it stays and how it still performs in comparison!
Dang, in the first 20 seconds, Windell checked off most of the Level1Techs Bingo card. lol
I will give my 7800X3D to my son.
He is chomping at the bit.
He has a 5800X.
9:30 There’s no 95th percentile in the graph is there?
Every single day that passes is a day closer to the inevitable downfall of Windows, it’ll take a while but I don’t see it stopping.
@0:06
Been hanging around linus again? LoL
7:00 The 7900 XTX seems to have far worse 1% lows than the 4090 in 1440p and 4K.. what happened?
3:40 15507 to 19549 points is an improvement of 26 percent
big ol oopsie there dear level1 tech team
the 20.6 percent is how much less points the 7800x3d achieved compared to the 9800x3d score sadly you used the wrong formula .
here is what happened with simpler numbers going from 4 to 5 is 25 percent up, going from 5 to 4 is 20 percent down
I’d like to hear more about Eco mode.
Excellent review. Makes you wonder how much of a revelation the 9950 X3D will be, when it comes out, in terms of realizing the full potential of Zen5 arc!
I play at 4k so i will stick with my 4090 and Core Duo 😛. Seriously tho I would like to see a 4090 w/ 5800X3D @4k vs 4090 w/ 9800X3D @ 4k. Or even the 7800X3D in the mix.
lol Leave it to Microshaft to be the one that is now holding back hardware performance with their garbage operating systems. If only *_Japanese_* gaming on Linux was better and didn’t require a multitude of hoops, troubleshooting, and some things just outright not working. Otherwise, my main rig would already be on Linux, and I wouldn’t be running W10 IoT Ent through SD on my Steam Deck (because the few games I have on Steam aren’t games I play regularly) and the PC games I wanted to play *_portably_* works best in Windows because Windows still handles locale much more gracefully than Linux does.
Plus, after spending 8+ hours to try and get the game to install properly through Steam, as well as trying Lutris, and STILL couldn’t get it to install (due to the game being a massive asspain to install *_in Windows_* because it’s a game that predates W10–and W8.x–and thus there’s a process that has to be done for the game to install properly)… well, let’s just say that my ambivalence towards the Steam Deck has been turned towards the point where I want to get rid of it now and regret not getting something like an AYN Loki instead for portable PC gaming. When I properly set the JP locale and STILL get mojibake when trying to run a Japanese .exe installation, it’s just not time to get rid of Windows quite yet.
It’s not a gift if it’s out of most people’s price brackets
Gotta test at 720. 4090 too slow. Then discard engines with limits.
But can the 7900XTX do compute acceleration in any practical way? (Physically sure, but the AMD gpu compute stack is like those decades-long tire fires.)
I mean has anyone verified usability of a Sycl implementation for it, like oneAPI or AdaptiveCPP(formerly hipSycl/openSycl)?
Wendel – The Ricardo Montablan comparison is appreciated 🤣
I know I’m purchasing the 9800X3D first thing Thursday morning as I already have a X870P MB and 64GB 6400MT/s RAM. Not a bad upgrade for less than $1,000 coming from AM4. Probably upgrade to 8300MT/s RAM If it’s beneficial.
The introduction was beautiful. Way to go AMD! What a great processor all around.
Currently on a 12700K can’t wait to upgrade to this should pair nicely with my 7900 XT. Awesome video +1 sub
Please, PLEASE, start including DCS (VR) benchmarks. It is a very inefficiant title that requires hardware brute forcing.
Bethoven would have had the same reaction to a 9800x3D.
Thanks for including 4K benchmarks. Even at 4K the 285k sucks in some games it’s crazy
AMD, make a 9950X3D chip with dual 3d vcache ccds and my money is yours…
The king is dead. Long love the king.
12:59 KHAN!!!!
LOL
I really like that we see 1440p and 4k. I get to see performance on CPU we need 1080p, but at this price not many people use it like that. Nice to see real world use.
Thank you for th 4k info even though it “Shouldn’t” matter still nice to see. Also, it would be interesting to perform the same testing against Dragon Age The Veilguard with RT on and Ultra RT on considering the specs say you need a 16 core.
It is interesting they are stacking the compute on top of the cache now. I wonder if they could start combining this with their Zen 5c cores. Could we see systems that have the density of the zen 5c cores but with performance of the regular zen 5 cores? If they can stack multiple layers like you say could we get even more? I am sure it might not make as much sense in the consumer market but if they could push all of the cache down from the compute die into the cache layer they could probably fit 16 zen5 cores in the same area they currently do 8. Multiply that by the 16 chiplets you get on the 9005 series and you would have 256 full zen 5 cores. Yeah they probably wouldn’t do this in zen5. Zen6 then?
What we wanted was a 24 and 32 core CPU upgrade, what we got was…
an uninspired incremental rehash of the last generation.
Ain’t nobody pulling the trigger on this upgrade.
It’s not about gaming performance any more. Those were the 1990’s. Any chip can game today.
It’s all about mutlithreaded rendering performance now.
And it’s not like AMD doesn’t have the chips.. they have a whole line of Threadrippers that would do the job. They just need to drastically cut the price so they are affordable and obtainable.
At this point it’s not about the CPU’s lagging behind though… it’s about the Operating Systems lagging way behind and being in an absymal state… and not improving… but getting… worse… from an already bad state. The state of operating system software is way behind the hardware…. which is actually… kind of hard to believe, but true.
Imagine amd make a server version of this 😮
Large cache , easy to cool , manageable power consumption
I think Mickeysoft has an incentive to make Intel and AMD CPUs or X86-64 in general look worse than they are since they are now in direct competition with their ARM CPUs. I could see Mickey dragging their feet a LOT for future improvements for X86-64.
Personally I think AMD and Intel along with a collection of the best Linux developers should get together and put out a Linux version that works well, has the compatibility layer working with ALL software including games and give that as an option for X86-64 users, AND these software devs get PAID for the work they do.
I’ll keep my 7600X until whenever the last of the X3D chips comes out for AM5, and I’ll buy it used for peanuts because fuck corporate rip offs
It may need some more testing but it kind of shows how zen5 could perform if amd did their due diligence and also updated their infinity fabric and io die. Guess they wanted to go cheap with zen5 to hope that zen6 really hits hard. But the air is getting thinner and thinner for x86 designs. Like from intel everything surrounding the cpu is still pack leading
“Wendel Wendelling” 😂
At least we got some good news this morning…
How can you say the Linux Kernel is not perfect?? Linus just made it even more perfect!
Wow, amazing! More importantly – can we see the Linux side?? 😀
HI Wendell. Thank you very much for the review. It looks great overall.
I have a question though. I only play World of Warcraft (WoW) and I can’t find any benchmarks that definitively reveal the impact of 3d vcache on WoW. Can you benchmark WoW and show if it 3d vcache gives noticeable FPS gains or not? It would be very helpful in choosing my next CPU. I know that FFXIV is close but that’s just a benchmark and not a proper representation of game performance when tied in to the servers.
Awesome intro
Still a proud owner of 7800X3D and 7900XTX (early adopter), but am happy to see AMD making strides in the right direction. Definitely will skip this gen but boy, for those looking to gather components for a new PC, what a time…
Linux benchmarking and comparisons to chips like the 9700x on resolutions ABOVE 1080p would be highly appreciated
Go potato class motherboard!!!! Glad to hear that!
If want I SAW is real Intel got ripped apart by AMD’s 9800x3d JAWS.
The intro is great, love the theme of it… Also the yellow geiger counter in the background, top prop.
What I’m excited for is what this means for the future.
Maybe stacking stuff on top of the I/O die?
Stacking multiple CCDs?
Double Stacking cache etc…
The future is more exciting to me.
Honestly this feels very underwhelming. Not worth the upgrade even from 5000 series.
Threadripper X3D has been announced. 🎉❤
07:40 The 9800X3D has somewhat higher Memory Latency vs the 9700X according to AIDA64, which may be why the games most memory/cache-sensitive aren’t seeing high jumps, despite the IPC and TDP boost. It would also be why games that scale best with frequency are seeing the biggest changes. It may be possible to just offset some of the latency loss by enabling PBO and jumping the CPU up to 5.5 or 5.6 GHz
This is my opinion, take with a grain of salt. I’ll be upgrading from the 5600X to the 9800X3D soon 🙂
Those “Golden Girls” spooky
18:10 Maybe this hand sign has some different meaning in the US, however….. in South America, almost the entire continent (emphasis on almost) represents a big fat giant F……. you🤣🤣
This time around it would make sense to put 3DVcache on BOTH CCDs for the 9900x3d and 9950x3d since there is NO issue with pushing the cores as fast as possible and to help with the issues of the IO die has with this generation. I still say the issue with Zen 5 on desktop was the IO die and I’m doubling down on that now.
*PC Gamers Party Time Guys*
😂😂😂😂😂
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Here is to hoping the next Threadripper is spun off of these learnings… and not raised in price while being terrified to 40% more expensive.
It will only be a gift if the price is fair!
Now I want to see zen 5 epyc with 3d V cashe
Love the intro.
For a second i tough the intro song turned into a snoop dog song.
You have a cool channel
Pleasure to watch, well done !
: I just love Wendel and his humor. I’m loling every time.
9800x3D / 7800x3D should have been monolithic.
These CPUs need too much power in idle, just as much as my 12500 draws in some games…
Wendelling is the best Wendel.
I wonder how much better or worse zen 5 would have been if they improved the io die and kept zen 4 CCD instead of improving the CCD and kept zen 4 io die. Really shows how much important i/o is for cpu. Hopefully they make a superior io die for zen 6.
Can I hope for a Level1Linux video?
“wendell wendelling” nice one!
Looks like it’s time to upgrade my trusty 3800X
Intro is epic lol Great video.
I was thinking about this CPU in particular, recently.
Since there is room for another Chip-let, would a similarly sized GPU chip-let make sense?
9800X3DG?
Zen5X3D must have massively improved latency over Zen4X3D, we’re seeing 20% improvement in multiple games.
What a legend.
Wendell x Sam Sulek Collab when??
I love the moonlight sonata movement 1 at the start.
A gift that requires one to pay 480+ USD upfront? Wow, how generous
As someone with a 5900X CPU, I’m excited for this launch. Great video Wendell, appreciate the quick chart about SVM / Memory. Maybe do an extra video benchmark having the 9800X3D on different OC’s / memory configurations to see if there is any difference? (Stock / 6000hz C30 vs Stock / 8000mhz vs PBO -10 6000/C30 vs PBO -10 vs 8000, etc? 1080/1440p/4K)
its embarrassing amd can’t do 4k that good anymore…they used to when raja was in charge during rdna1 and vega…vega was first card do 4k, now we got rdan3 can’t do 4k
Is it at all likely that AMD will launch Zen 5+ to desktop in 6 to 9 months with the same cores but new I/O die?
It seems that old I/O die holds back all the desktop Zen 5 CPUs, probably the X3D part(s) to lesser degree.
Is it just my fever dream?
And if not how the new parts should be called?
Surely it shouldn’t be a 10k generation pretending to be a completely new thing. But it would surely justify something more than XT addition. 9750x? But what with already existing 9950x?
Good stuff! The only thing I would have liked to see added in the list was a 9700x, just to see the difference with the same gen.
As a 79xtx owner…. THANK YOU!
(it’s also on water 🙂 )
Great review. I wish you included GTA V benchmark too and a few simulation games. GTA: V is still widely popular averaging around ~100k players on Steam only.
Love your video, so much info that’s 100% correct with even best GPU advice. I shared it on my socials. Expects your views to go even higher. We are VR flyers in MSFS2020 and the 19th this month we’ll all be flying in VR in MSFS2024 aka Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 that will use all the CPU cores you can give it is what MS & Asobo said. I hope you get the chance to test it with a VR headset like the Pimax Crystal Light we all need to buy since MS cut WMR out of Windows 11 version 24H2 and bricks all our HP Reverb G2 headsets.
Lol I loved the Ricardo Montabon reference. I remember those old Cordova commercials with the rich Corinthian leather. For those who don’t know, Corinthian leather was just a fancy word for vinyl LOL!
Im guessing the 5090 is going to help the x3d chips out once again
Wendell, unlike the last Intel CPU, this one is the one I’ve been waiting for. Let’s hope there’s no trauma and we get to celebrate another win.
Hello, you beauty.
Clip your fingernails!
any testing with the 9800x3d on a b650e motherboard ?
Tis a great day Trump won, and the new X3D revews are out. I can retire my 1950x soon.
Do server tasks like SQL DBs and web servers benefit from 3D VCache, generally speaking? I’d imagine databases might love that cache space… anyone have details or links to resources here?
I would desperately like to see Factorio, modded mc, satisfactory, planet coaster or similar in theese benchmarks.
Anyone else googling Ricardo Montalbán rich corinthian leather?
Wendell, have you tested it against 7800X3D iso-power? Does all the improvements come from increased power?
Hopefully the 16 core has the vcache on both chiplets this time!
I hope you are doing well Wendell.
You need a hug.
I need a hug.
We all need a hug.
i currently have a 3900x with a 6900 XT. I think its time for one of these newfangled X3D CPUs I’ve being hearing about for the last few years
7800X3D it is. Neck and neck at 1440p and above
Favorite quote of the day: “Neat!”
I would love to see you do some benchmarks and share your knowledge on AMD’s integrated GPUs. Their latest, 890M, is equivalent to an RTX 1070 TI, ostensibly. That is insane to me
Game at 4k and definitely not spending $800 plus just for a GPU, so unless you game at 1080p all the time, why buy the high end GPU? So benchmarking at 1080p with a 4090 seems a little insane
Well AVX-512 is huge if you want to emulate PS3, if I recall correctly.
That intro though lmfao! I love your ridiculousness!
this intro
16 core version? Anyone? Anyone?
This gives me a good feeling about going for the 5800X3D instead of upgrading to AM5 and upgrading to 9800X3D
This may be a Level1Linux question, but how does 3DVcache affect code compilation performance?
Aja, y sirve esa madre?
Haill to the New King! And came 9800X3D came to papa!😂
Hey wendell how do you expect the performances to be scale with a 5090 in the future?
but, can i put it in a laptop?
Idk I am still on my Athlon CPU, maybe I will find a reason to upgrade one day
