The Story Of Rust: Surviving A Decade
It’s astonishing to realize that Rust has been part of our lives for over a decade. Many players today might not have even experienced or seen the original Rust legacy. This video will take you on a journey through Rust’s evolution, from its legacy origins to the annual updates that have shaped it into the game we know today. I hope you find as much enjoyment in watching this video as I found in making it.

great video. nice quality. to much personal nostalgia crap in their. change the title to my ten year aniversary for rust. you interject memories and opinion. its not the story of rust. this is the story of jfarr experience with rust.
10.5.2024 getting closer
Best part of the video is hearing your voice go through puberty. Haha. Didn’t realize I wasn’t subscribed. Fixed that.
I’m a Alpha rust, 4 Jan, 2016.
Foggy boots, sadly no bp book. (12:30)

Letter of Appreciation for Jfarr’s Outstanding Contribution to the Rust Community
Dear Rust Community,
I hope this letter finds you all well and thriving in the world of Rust. Today, I want to take a moment to shine a spotlight on someone whose dedication and hard work have significantly impacted my Rust journey – Jfarr.
Approximately three months ago, I stumbled into the captivating universe of Rust. Little did I know that this game would become more than just a pastime; it became a passion. Amidst the chaos and challenges of this virtual world, one beacon stood out – Jfarr. His commitment to creating informative and insightful videos to aid fellow Rust players is truly commendable.
Through his videos, Jfarr has become more than just a content creator; he’s a mentor who has unlocked the secrets of Rust for many, including myself. Despite having only a fraction of the hours logged compared to seasoned players, thanks to Jfarr’s guidance, I find myself playing with the confidence and skill of someone with over 11k hours of experience.
Jfarr’s contributions extend far beyond individual skill enhancement. His videos have inspired me to take on new challenges within Rust, leading me to the exciting venture of owning my own server. This wouldn’t have been possible without his invaluable tips, tricks, and strategic insights.
Therefore, I implore each and every one of you to join me in expressing our gratitude to Jfarr. Let’s show our appreciation by liking, subscribing, and sharing his content far and wide. Whether you’re a seasoned Rust veteran or just dipping your toes into its world, Jfarr’s videos are an indispensable resource that can elevate your gameplay experience to new heights.
To Jfarr, I offer my deepest thanks for the time, effort, and passion you pour into your videos. You have undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the Rust community, and for that, we are immensely grateful.
Here’s to many more adventures in Rust, guided by the wisdom of Jfarr.
Sincerely,
Exceptional Video and game!
Man, you just made me review some memories when i was a kid and playing rust experimental on my tv, this was so much dope !
have a good one, I love your tutorials vids
And that was the story of how jfarr got the best guide channel for rust ❤❤
My earliest memories of Rust had to have been around late 2016, early 2017. I built this decently large house. Two floors and upstairs windows without any kind of bars. I remember dying, someone finding my house, getting in the upstairs windows somehow, and killing me with my one internal door open.
The book was originally a generator. Part of the plan iirc was that every item was a steam item you unlock.
Do you look at rust console dev blogs/updates since it’s release or do you just know what came out recently from the random influx of viewers to a random monument video?
yo throat is a goat
This video was amazing. Thanks for telling your story!
Dope ass video ive been waiting for this type of vid for a while
Amazing video bro well done ❤
I’ve been playing Rust for over 8 years, I started literally as 10 yo kid, after those years, after many thousands of hours and few friendships that last to this day, this video really gave me strong nostalgia 🙂
Seeing the rate of progression with the game over the years makes me really disappointed with the state console edition is in, hopefully it will get the support it needs one day-
such a well made video man <3
This video is in my top 3 best intros to rust
fuckin incredible video!
This is like a God dam Frost opening
Beautiful video. Makes me wish I was there. I only started playing at the end of 2019. But Rust ages like fine wine. Facepunch understands the playerbase and what the game needs better than most other studios and they are very passionate, improving the game month by month.
I really miss the recoil of old weapons 💔 it just makes your time worth it
been playing since legacy and its crazy how different the game is now
Bro you should make editing tutorials.
19:42 only if you played rust a month before the update
ive owned rust since 2016 but since i didnt play during that month i never recieved the frog boots 🙁
Super underrated video, hopefully this will get the recognition it deserves
My memory is really bad but seeing this brought so much nostalgia and great memories back 😊
Vehicles are actually very good on some servers. Definitely not useless.
This deserves way more views keep up the good quality content bro
You have an excellent narration voice. If you ever branch out into something other than Rust videos, I’ll be watching.
W VIDEO QE LOVE YOU
❤❤❤❤❤❤
very much appreciated footage here, good work! 😀
7:46 in and I’m already liking and commenting which I never do on a post like ever but this is a awesome video your speaking great
Really made me feel like I was there gave me the chills I played console on release until now I’ve always watched rust but something just brings u back to ur first ever wipe
I remember hating the transition from Legacy to Experimental, especially with how badly it ran back then
crazy to see it change over the years starting long before I ever played. as a lifelong gamer and game dev for 12 years, its so hard for me to get excited for new things in gaming and I often wonder if that feeling is still possible, but directly on the other side of that are old games that can be a part of our lives for 10+ years… and for who knows how long? that wasn’t even imaginable a few decades ago.
I discovered and played Rust during it’s browser phase. This was such a great watch, thank you!
just discover you wow such great content new subs here
ur rlly creative and good at explaining nice job
so much paid stuff in 2023. sad 🙁
PLEAAAASEE make a facts and glitches video about rust
this game will never die. the cry babies will die before rust does. Kudos to FP and the players that actually continually to enjoy the game. Also, PVE rust is the most perfect break from vanilla rust if you need a break.
I have waited so long for this vido…Thank you!
Criminally underrated video and channel, thanks man for making me relieve the nostalgia step by step, keep doing what you’re doing.
I think I disagree with older classic Rust being more hardcore. If anything it was just more simple and less complex. I played old Rust and there was definitely nothing “hardcore” about it lol. Good video tho, subbed and liked.
That ownership system…. never hated a game mechanic more
Something I noticed in around 2022 is that so many good games i loved to play have been reaching its 10th year anniversary which could really make you realise how all these old games were so much better before all the 60 dollar games coming broken or just money hungry games.
you deserve more subscribers
It’s crazy to see how to pvp still remained the same Ik the recoil and guns, and all that changed, but the way you fight never changed
I’ve spent 800+ hours in Rust Legacy. Best best gaming hours in my life. Thank you for paying the tribute! Long live Rust!
Those women and men have bald heads 😀 not sexy
I remember watching YouTubers play Rust back in 2017, and wished I could play it. I didn’t get a working pc that could ‘handle’ Rust until 2022 just after the combat update, and only got fully immersed into the game in 2023 because I got my friends playing it and made new friends on PvE servers. I can’t wait to see what new things come out this year, and how many improvements get added.
Thanks for all of the amazing tutorial videos! I’ve learnt a lot just from watching content creators such as YouTubers; Hjune, Frost, Blooprint, Steve, Willjum, Ser Winter, Mr Flak, ShadowFrax, Disfigure and now Jfarr. Love the community <3
thanks for this video, i cant comprehend how it must be for u and others that played since legacy, however i have been playing for around 5/6 years now. its crazy to think about that. i remember not knowing how to get a gun or build, and now me and my little brother play this amazing game together and bond. i had a big break in 2020, and came back about 10 months ago, i am so happy that i gave it another shot. i will always love rust.
Loved this one man nice one. Nailed the nostalgia imo
you really hit this out of the park man, I really appreciate the content you make. Keep it up man❤
Incredible video bro, the hours of work you put into this video payed off, I started playing in 2020 So it was great to see what the early years were like. BIG UPPS
This was an amazing watch, it’s actually insane to see how far rust has came over the years and just how fast it’s progressed, thanks for making this video🫶🏼🩵👌🏻
Cool story bro and thank you for the electric guides you have helped alot
Sad video 🙁
console be like
Can this please get more views bro like holy shit this is a banger.
Could you please do a full guide video on the new Place where it have gingerbread bots?
the nostalgia is crazy, I’ve been a fan for 2 years now, even met you ingame lol! keep up the great content.
How does this vid only have 17k views???
Really cool video, there ain’t no game like rust
Awesome video man
Great video, sitting here doing some work waiting for the wipe and watching this GEM.
Amazing stuff. Honestly got choked up there at the end. Well done. <3
I started in 2018. And I feel like that was the right time to get into rust.
Thanks for sharing this with us. I’ve just passed my 1 year anniversary of playing Rust, and have always been curious about its history.
I dont know why facepunch made the map gen worse tbh
u are such an awesome and intelegant youtuber. great job man
you gave me a lot of beginner knowledge to start rust, and i have 6.5k hours now. thanks for everything
Rust from 2013 as so good
I joined rust because of the tunabandits. Well pauseunpause. Thats why i have my rubber froggy boots 🙂
Good work
Bro forgot about milituns
I missed your vids bro. When I started rust 2 years ago i was watching all your tutorials, your vids have been my go to for info. Just want to say I appreciate you and more.powernto the chanel.
a Legend ❤
this brought a tear to my eye
Awesome vid J ❤❤
nice job man
Awesome, thank you for putting in the work!
What ever happened to water boards?
It wasnt until this video that i realized iv been playing for so long because of the frogg boots
great video as always!
You are definitely the most underrated rust YouTuber bro every video is a banger
My most memberable Rust wipe was during legacy. There was a tiny 3×3 island that was surrounded by water. There was a tiny little spot of land that connected to the main continent, and that allowed you to jump to the island. Since touching water killed you instantly, you could build a 3×3 tower on this island, and no one could build up next to it, or get on top of it, so they had to raid from the bottom up. There was also no stability, so you could build really high. I still have no idea what the build limit was.
I built a 3×3 tower on that island, that went 20 – 30 stories high ( I don’t remember how tall, but it was really tall). There was a smaller base in front of the island on the mainland that served as an “airlock” to the tower, and it also served as a flank base. Each level of the base was a 3×3 maze of doors, before it went to the next level. The first time someone tried to offline they base, they made it about 5 levels up (40ish doors). I don’t remember how much time it took to get that much boom, but it was significiant. The raiders ended up getting nothing.
I was the base builder, but I had a group that was constantly going out and pissing off everyone on the server, which made us rich, but also alot of enemies. The wipe ended with the server admin organizing a serverwide online raid against our tower. We won the raid barely, but the base got offline’d the next day (done in a way I suspect it was the admin, but he gave us a cool online raid, so fair trade).
They didn’t get all the loot though. After the online raid, and before we got offline’d, I had hidden some loot on the ground part of the island, just outside the base, inside some small loot bags. They were kind of like the stashes in the game now.
Haven’t experienced anything like that since.
I have absolute respect to Facepunch for such a wonderful game and job! They really have dedication and love for their game! I cant see any other game developers who communicates that much with their own players. I love this game. I had so much fun with my friends within 7k hours. Before playing Rust I spend a lot of my free time just watching youtuber movies in Rust. I even bought a PC just to play Rust. At start of my Rust, I had mixed emotions as I did not understood it was just a game. Now it is way different. I am just having fun playing, trying new things, helping new players. Love Rust! ❤
Edit: I suppose it was all of your videos and I guess it was you laughing in all them shorts. Such an innocent laugh you had/have. 😊
Amazing video as ever! Congratulations!
A part of me really misses that air of mystery Rust had in its early days. You felt compelled to go out and explore and see what was around. Really looking forward to what the new year has in store for us and the game, looking forward to more videos from you man
Great video man ,your videos are really always top quality ,really appreciate facepunch for top quality updates mostly but watching this video and realising i have been playing this game for yours made me feel much older 🙂
I didn’t play the game for some time, and this video is very helpful to see what changed in case I want to go back.
Super interesting. As a guy who started playing early 2021, the history of rust provided is much appreciated.
Cheers.
the timeline really all merges together after so long, you forget how long the journey has been to get to where we are today
Jfarr is so underrated
video age restricted 🙁
I thought I was OG ’cause I have frog boots 😆 Little did I know ..
The red wolf and bears Rust was amazing, the feeling of isolation was something Rust never had after.
Rust circa 2016-2017 was peak for me. Still kind of survivor, no vehicles, no electricity, but a more mature game.
Modern Rust is quite… modern though, no more survivor, it’s a more dynamic always something to do game.
I bought the game because of Frankie in 2013. Man I miss that guy 😔
Brilliant stuff as always brother. Hopefully this gains some more traction. Really deserves it
Jfarr Your the Best do not stoop !!
i love the transition from 2015 to 2016
my hopes for 2024 are a revamp to the terrain generation, improved hardcore mode and a more balanced progression system. great vid
Started playing rust in 2018 and I don’t think I will stop anytime soon! One thing I’m not happy about and I think its need to be removed is tech tree… As you don’t need to find an items anymore to learn it, game somehow feel dead and boring, because all you need is mining outpost to get all blueprints.
Great video for people who started playing Rust and want to know full story.
This was an amazing video dude! Great job!
Well done as always Jfarr.
🎉big up great content for years to come also i hope
Awesome video! I cannot imagine how long it took to create it. ggs
I feel like you do the cars a bit dirty, sure as a group they are kinda useless. But as a solo it’s pretty useful to drive your comps to outpost in armoured car
Mate congrats on the vid, amazing video and as always thank you for your content 😀
Loved the video! I started playing rust in 2020. It was super interesting seeing the history of rust.
This is some TOP TIER content, I am glad I found your channel a few years ago.
Awesome video, perfect pacing and high tier editing. Here’s for 10 more years!
Started playing in 2022. From this video now I see where all the game’s depth is coming from. And not only from the devs putting care into it 10 years after, but the players and youtubers playing and covering it too. Thank you, Jfarr!
I remember the XP system. Don’t miss it. Games like these need progression in the form of loot and skill. What I miss is RNG blueprints.
What about female characters
Seems the early stages it was all males. When was that introduced..
I almost cried movie quality really u should make some tbh
I hate the old recoil system because of how fake it felt, and how strong the recoil way. Shooting the SAR for example drifted your aim upwards for like 0.5 seconds rather than actually giving a recoil feeling
Amazing 🙂
What a huge video! The time lapse and the music at the end truly sent shivers down my shine! Big ❤ for you! I have a feeling, that this will be your biggest video ever!
42:15 The Industrial update is by far the most underated game changing update to ever hit. Completely changed the way base management could be done, introduced true auto sorting and automated many tedious and repetitive tasks.
I’ve only had the game for just over 18 months and only heard about it just over 2 years ago, even I’m getting a little emotional seeing how much the game has changed since I started watching/playing it! I’m 1200 hours in and loving it! I wouldn’t be where I am today without the help of your Tutorials Jfarr! This last year when you upgraded the visuals again, it looks so professional and lays it out simpler for newer players, can’t wait to see what Rust and your channel brings in 2024
I started playing in early 2021. It’s so crazy to see all that I missed. I still remember the day I logged in and graphics had been updated… I yelled to my friend in Discord that the mushrooms looked weird and the small sulfur nodes looked gross.
sad that i’ve started playing it in just 2020, but damn that’s now almost 4 years ago. Hoever i found a way to download old rust depots for cleint and server from steam, not that hard but tedious, and ofc i wanna play each vesion with myself only lol, might record it without like nostalgia for documentary
High quality,Very well produced, the editing is so good , thank you ❤❤
I started in rust with the rad bears and wolfs its been such a long time
Glad I quit the game in 2021, game was already turning more sterile and grindy. Now hapis is gone, old map gen is gone, old recoil is gone, never ending stream of p2w items. Yeah fuck facepunch.
Brilliant editing!
I can feel the nostalgia through this video, even though I wasn’t there during Legacy. Thanks for giving us a glimpse of how great it would have been!
Creators like yourself enhance our experience by providing exclusive and critical information on the game. I’ve been hooked on the game since I first played it and have embraced all the updates brought in, even when controversial, as it’s often for the good of the community and to open up new possibilities. As you mentioned, the game wouldn’t be there if it weren’t for all its updates, making it less hardcore.
A little note on cars: they seem to be way underrated. We are starting to see them a lot more on Aus servers, and I really like how certain groups use them as their core strategy to roam or perform raids! I convinced my own group to use them, and since then, they have become an essential part of our compounds – remaining one of the safest ways to transfer a large amount of loot over long distances and to recycle safely at safe zones with substantial cargo. I think what really pushed them lately was the code lock, being a game-changer for safety.
Would love to bump into you one day! Looking forward to the next video
Beautiful video jfarr, your editting is goated
Jfarr, it blows my mind how you don’t have more subscribers. Every video of yours I watch reinforces my belief that you deserve so much more credit. You’re too talented to not have 500k+ subs, seriously. Please don’t ever stop uploading and I think you should even upload gameplay videos/stream highlights etc.
Amazing video 👏
I have only been playing a short time. I remember watching my RL best friend Maddax playing back in the red irradiated animal days. He messed around with it, mainly building, and eventually moved on to many, many other games. I never left Everquest / Everquest 2, and later Villagers and Heroes. Fast forward to 2022, when Rust videos began coming into my Youtube feed. I remembered the game from way before, and it looked pretty interesting and I wanted to try it. Before I could ask my best friend if he wanted to pick it back up again, he unexpectedly passed away. I was given his PC by the family since playing these games together was our thing. I sparked up his steam account and found Rust, and have been playing on his PC under his character name since July 2022.
I have kept his name because it makes me behave myself a little more. I wouldn’t do anything to sully his name.
Very well produced.
Wish i was there for that
great video… me personally just want pre hdrp gen and color grading T-T
I absolutely love this video
The rust lore is so interesting
This was a beautiful video man
I have said it before and say it again. Your videos are so high quality and good. You deserver much more subscribers
As a player that only got the game 10 days ago, watching a video showing 10 years of hard work from both the game dev and Jfarr is beyond amazing. Happy 10 years Jfarr, all your videos a really helpful and fun to watch.
dang i’ve only ever seen your tutorials. the editing and writing on this are really good! great vid jfarr!!
Wow. I had no idea. I’m a new fish with only about 600hrs or so, and stumbled Apon your vids a yr or so ago. This was better then shadowfraxs vid and really opened my eyes to both the game and you as a content creator. Keep it up
I only ever played solo. I feel like half the experience is playing with a group.
GOD BLESS THE RECOIL UPDATE!
this video brings so many old memories. Great work
I miss the large forests, i had my first taste of pvp in one, i snuck up on a guy and threw a spear at him and i missed, he downes me with a hatchet while repeatedly screaming “was it worth it” at me. Good times 😂
All dislikes on the video are from russians screaming nakeds 🙃
Wonderful job, mate.
Old recoil like before BUT a new gun attachement that give you a better recoil ( like actual recoil) with less bullets damage 🤔🤷🏼
Yes sir free rust
I’m not crying…you’re crying
Great video. I am interUsted in your take on bases. I hope you do make that video.
Jfarr is OG af!
crazt man!
You should have 1 mill subs.
Longest i have ever waited in a server que for any game 7 hrs!!!……… Worth it! May the next decade be as great!
Wow, this must have taken a long time. Keep the good work!👍
wow it feels nostalgic for me even tho i was not here back in the days, ur voice was soooo different as well lol
i wish H1Z1 could’v follow the same path
amazing video m8, thx for the travel
This is beautiful work, Jfarr. Top quality story-telling, pacing, and editing. Very impressive.
I always enjoy watching your fun and informational content. Keep up the good work bro 🎉🎉
i wish i was able to experience rust in its earlier days. thanks for the video
I knew this was going to be a banger video! Nice work man, it’s wild to see how much this game has changed!
I miss old recoil but i understand why they changed it great video i js finished watching it!
even if i only have bin playing rust for 1 year now ive still met all lot of friends in the game and i hope to make my own story in the rust world
btw i always look forword to your videos after a new wipe
Been playing since 2019 and while I feel like a veteran, seeing this makes me realize I’m still a noob and missed a lot by joining so late.
Thanks for the trip down the memory lane. ❤
Really well done.
This makes me wish I got to play legacy rust. Crazy how much the game has changed. Great video!!!
I started the game in 2020 and learned a lot thanks to your videos. So thank you Jfarr
Jfarr never fails to impress me with this amazing content. Keep up the great work man 👍
I am 63, i wish those games had been there when i was a kid.
All we had was, ping-pong tennis.
i couldn’t believe my eyes, a 50 minute Jfarr video! this is a really great watch
That video is a MASTERJOB!!!
Bro, How does this guy only have 80k subs. Hes a staple in this community. I know every one of us have used his videos at some point.
I never played rust but this video is amazing good work 🧡 keep up 😁👍
Wow man. December 28th 2015 i bought rust and ARK for 20 euros with my Christmas money , I really wish i played more back then but i was… wow. I just thought about it now, i was just 11 years old and i remember being to scared to leave my thatch and wood home because of all the geared players, i would go out with just a rock to get some nodes (when you got everything from one rock!) and then go back and gather my courage up to go outside again, but then a bear was outside and i was so scared because i didn’t have a sleeping bag so i sat in my thatch house for hours haha!
I came from Rust Legacy in 2014, for me it was simply my favorite game and it continues to be. The current rust is good, but nothing compares to the old one, I spent 8 thousand hours on that game.
In Brazil, the game’s code was broken, so it was basically free and had a LOT of unofficial servers. It was the game that introduced me to the survival game scene, which I love and make my life based on, it was the game that made me interested in opening a Steam account and learning about other games.
Without a doubt, Rust Legacy was part of my childhood in such a way that I can’t explain it, there were thousands of friends who left, others who stayed, but certainly a feeling of nostalgia that, in a very strange way, is beautiful.
Unfortunately I didn’t get the start of the new rust, which at the time we called it experimental, as the key was expensive, but if there’s one thing I did in 2018 it was buy the current rust, and even though I don’t play it often , it was a way to support Facepunch for something as important to me as rust.
You are really great at making videos. You have amazing skill. I hope we will see much more from you because you truly have something special.
Crazy how far rust has come. A lot of other studios should look up to facepunch
The older maps were so much more interesting than those we currently get.
Yeah this one is alright i guess..
Jfarr, would love to see a video of you playing a wipe.
Future Legend make a video about already legendary game. Hope you will make a huge progress in 2024, I watched your videos since u was very small youtuber 🙂
Can’t wait for more chill rust wipes on brutal servers 🙂 Great video ! Love your vids! Been a great game for me for many years, here is to many more ! 🎉
Man I kinda of wish I was there however I didn’t start playing Rust till last year and DayZ back in 2020 however I do remember the early days of Minecraft on PS3 and og pocket Edition good times
Your guides and tips helped me to the harsh world of rust. Have a good one dude
Good video so far!, good job jfarr
If it werent for you i would have been just another screaming naked getting farmed on the beach. I appreciate all the time and energy youve put into this channel and i hope your future is bright
Hey jfar hope your good first time commenting on a video. Just wanna say a huge thanks because now I know how to do basic light electrics in rust and I hope you have a happy new year.
W
