Something about this song is just addictive, I just wish it was longer! It is SO dense, like you said. You can focus on a different layer every listen and it’s more and more incredible.
I would love to hear you react to the more solemn, orchestral version that plays in the fight leading up to THIS Find the Flame. It’s such a different tone and feel but just as beautiful.

Many of us veteran Final Fantasy XIV players have thought that Masayoshi Soken deserved the Best Score and Music Award at the Game Awards for his great work on Final Fantasy XIV, even though it’s an MMORPG. Soken finally wins the award at the Game Awards 2023 for his outstanding soundtrack on Final Fantasy XVI.

Still find it amazing you can understand characters from a song all it says to me is how a song is that well made you can understand a characters story from music

“The Only Fantasy Here Is Yours. And We Shall Be Its Final Witness.”

It’s hard for me not to compare this to The Maker’s Ruin. This is Clive’s theme, TMR is the Warrior of Light’s theme, our theme, the player. It goes beyond that though, because both have an alternate “Final Boss” version. At the end of Endwalker we get With Hearts Aligned and at the last stage of the final boss in 16 we get All As One. These are both remixes of the original, both at the final FINAL boss, and both are very clearly meant to be OUR boss music. The moment where we, the player, the protagonist, pull it all together and grasp victory! Damnit I’m crying as I write this GAH!

Soken has this uncanny ability to make me cry just thinking about the meaning of the music and I can’t imagine it’s just him either, since the story writers have such a huge impact on all the buildup to this moment and it wouldn’t work without them. Amazing games, amazing music, intense story with endings that crystalize as perfect moments of “I remember where I was when I beat that game for the first time, I remember who was with me, I remember what I felt”. Those are things we can hold onto forever.

10:26 I just love this use of the strings to lead in a section of fast pace music I heard so rarely in maybe one or two video game songs I don’t even remember of. It has a very joyful and galvanizing feel to it.

It kind of pisses me off that two of the best RPG soundtracks of all time released this year (Soken’s FFXVI and Nishiki’s Octopath 2). They are two OSTs that deserve a massive amount of acclaim, and instead one is going to dominate the other. It’s Ifrit vs Phoenix all over again, ha ha.

like 75% through FF16 story my God what a fucking HYPE FEST every big fight is more badass and epic and intense than the last with the coolest fucking music and most badass cinematography IN COMBAT. crazy fucking game definitely GOTY worthy. stunning visuals too. badass game literally chills every other main mission.

Never in my life has a game given me more chills and goosebumps than this scene. EPIC doesn’t even do it justice. It has to be seen and felt to truly take it all in.

Key note: Final Fantasy is in the history books for the video game franchise with most Music OST sales out of any game franchise ever.

The rush you get beating down a boss with every Eikon ability while this masterpiece reaches all its highs, is a rare feeling any form of media can convey.

Soken and Yoshi P are nailing it everytime.

The moment that this happens in-game, when Clive has his “Find the Flame” event, is *absolutely incredible*. One of the finest moments of gaming and impactful storytelling I have ever experienced.

Been playing nonstop and my god this soundtrack is ascendant

Man, coming back to this vid now that the game is out and I’ve gotten to the point that this song plays (for the first time at least) in the game, MAAAAAN. You have the entire opening of the game and some stuff goes down that really hurts Clive emotionally, he then spends 13 Years trying to find out what exactly happened and to get closure, he finally retraces his steps to where everything went down 13 Years prior and he finally learns the Truth of everything and awakens to himself and finds his closure/the truth and must accept it all… Then this song kicks in during a fight essentially against himself/his mind and very being, incredibly powerful moment (also took about 8 Hours or so to reach… Also probably described it not the best or super accurately cause I’ve tried to avoid any and all Spoilers and keep it as vague as possible 😅)

This sounds like the opposite of a Requiem. Instead of dying it feels like coming back to life with a vengeance.

Imo, there will never be a greater piece of music.

I can’t be the only one who hears like a hint, at the very least, of FFXIV’s Maker’s Ruin and some of FFXV in this.

The rise instead of fall in that one little note is kinda when your struggling and you find that extra little breath or that extra little fight in you to live or succeed, or whatever it is that your struggling with, and considering Sokens battle with cancer, it rings so much more true from his personal experience, which makes so many of his songs in both ffxiv and ffxvi sound so more emotionally connecting with so many people.

Speaking of Final Fantasy, I’m partial to Memoro de la Stono from FFXI. It was the leimotif behind all the story cutscenes of Final Fantasy 11 for years. But in Chains of Promathia, which the devs thought would be the end of the game, your reward for the final mission was to hear the song with lyrics for the first time. And it just brought years of adventures and everything you’d done in the game rushing into your head.

Maybe if you don’t have a decade of memories of the game it won’t hit as hard, but it’s pretty good.

I was sad when the Final Fantasy VII remake best Genshin for best game music a couple years ago, but 16 deserves ALL the praise it gets.

It feels like a power up moment in an anime

When this piece played in one of the trailers, it was the first time I got super excited for FF16. I remember back in the 90s playing FF7 and being blown away by the soundtrack. Like videogame music to that point was just filler, but this music could move you. “Find the Flame” is like “Blinded by Light” for FF13, the first moment you heard it you’re captivated by the brilliance of the music.

Compared with FF14 or not, I’m just happy to have more from Soken and team. These days in 14 I’m as excited for the music accompanying each patch and expansion, as I am for other content. This is a first in gaming for me, and 16 is following in those tracks, exactly because of the team behind it. Their confidence in, and marketing of, 16, has been especially amazing for XIV players, I think. Can’t wait for the 22nd of June.

On another note, when are you getting to the 6.4 tracks? There’s a few of your takes I’m eagerly awaiting 😀

Final Fantasy will always have some of the best soundtracks in gaming ever. I am so glad it has been part of my entire life cause i don’t know how i would feel if i only found out about FF now.

I listened to this song 5 times last night while writing my trial case paper. It got me so hyped up that i got it done all in one night. (Obviously still need to get edit it. Im not THAT confident in it lol)
