I’m still not done with it yet, but I can say I genuinely like the more grounded and serious tone the game’s story has. You have games like FFVII Remake whose story is relatively grounded, but the entire narrative is kind of a fever dream of thoughts and concepts. In XVI, however, it is more grounded. Outside of the eikons, magic isn’t this superior thing – its more like a tool. People are still oppressed, but not in a comically overwhelming way (such as living in literal scrap heaps in FFVIIR). I’m not saying every FF needs to have some kind of grimdark bs in it, but having a mature setting, and some dark tones isn’t necessarily a bad thing. So far, outside of a moment here and there, I feel that the story in XVI is two things: Enjoyable and easy to follow.

That 2nd one is a biggie, since there are so many Final Fantasy entries that just dump you into a world with no knowledge of anything, and everyone speaks in riddles (FF X anyone?). Also – Active Time Lore is a GOD SEND if you’ve forgotten who a character is, or stepped away for a period of time and need to re-establish how we got to where we are. That addition is AMAZING, and I truly hope it’s in every FF going forward.

I am playing this now, and I feel it is super underrated. Reminds me of the reception to FF8

Long story short: it’s the first Final Fantasy in a long time that will remind you why you started loving Final Fantasy.

“I’m not easily wooed by fancy cinematics” is a wild thing to say after explaining how much he loved the eidolon battles even though they’re literally just fancy cinematics with shallow gameplay mechanics.

I couldn’t disagree more. For me this is probably the worst FF ever made. It is all flash and little substance. They took an action RPG game idea and threw in Chocobo’s, moggles, past FF music and a few other FF staples. This Combat System is not FF. I feel this game is unfortunately the end of the franchise. I get it is about redefining itself to a degree. But not to this level. They have to throw the things In I mentioned so you actually know you are playing a FF game. They should be rediscovering their roots for a more modern touch. Not shifting to no party and making it more an action game. The more I played it the more I disliked it. Story was weak as well as the characters. Characters came off as shallow and robotic. The music is definitely the highlight.

The side quests are weak early on, but they are so so good when you do the last one of the 3 or 4 in a chain of side quests from the same character.

5 hours in the game was amazing then it was just junk tons of dialogue over automated models of the character.. lol

I think something this review missed is the equipping of rings that make the gameplay easier for (making dodging and attacking way easier/automatic). I think the way they did it was brilliant because even people who like difficulty like me still found the complexity of the fighting systems to have great depth and very fun, and equipping the rings is optional, so you can set your own difficulty.

I’m mostly a pc gamer and this game made me want to buy a ps5 to play it, finish it, and have no regrets. That should tell you something. It is a masterpiece of storytelling, such a breath of fresh air, and I liked the combat too.

I was ridiculously skeptical of this, after two decades or so of being repeatedly burned by this franchise (I’m not counting FF7R), but I’m coming away very impressed. It might be my favorite FF since X, which admittedly isn’t a very high bar to cross, but I’m just glad to be excited about Final Fantasy again.

The combat’s fun and fast-paced, and the narrative feels like a combination of the best parts of Game of Thrones, Berserk, Attack on Titan, Evangelion, Dragon Age, the Witcher, and even some Naruto, Bleach, and Dragon Ball sprinkled in there. There’s times when I get “Tales of…” vibes from it too.

I just finished the game, and I have never been excited, never cried this much, and never been so impressed in a videogame that really pushes the boundaries of what a spectacle it is. I am absolutely wrecked, and didn’t expect any less from the team behind FFXIV.

A gorgeous game that nudged me to finally purchase a ps5. My very minor criticism would be that i wish (1) it employs more extensive face capture from the actual actors, (2) lip syncing is embedded with the audio language options, and (3) ff15’s Yoko Shimomura did the music.

Really wished you didn’t show the part where Clive was chained up. Now I know that Sid takes him prisoner. Was it really necessary to show that scene?

I’m tired of Dark fantasies. This new new Final Fantasy feels sad, feel gloomy. I will always remember Final Fantasy 10 and 8 as my favorite FF. I wish games are happier. I’m only allowed to play rated T games. This game not for the youth but I know kids are gonna play this.

Just started playing, not impressed so far, big deal having the whole team watch GOT, that doesn’t really excites me, I want to see surprises. Biggest complaint is that it is waaaaaaaay too easy. I know you can unlock more modes…but they should have been standard. We haven’t died once in action mode

So I bought my first Final Fantasy game based on the seemingly universally positive feedback. I have to say it is a huge disappointment. It looks beautiful and the combat is fun and satisfying if derivative but overall it’s been kind of a bore.
This is a story driven game. The story is actually good but the lack of player agency is kind of shocking. For starters it is completely linear. You are whisked from one story beat to another with zero ability to impact the story or even make any decisions at all. There aren’t even superficial dialogue options, just nothing. At a certain point the game opens up and allows you to travel to different locations but there is no point. There’s nothing to discover that isn’t put directly in your path by the main story. There are side quests but they are universally terrible and the most common type by far is food delivery. That’s right, the game reduces the heroic Clive into a Door Dasher. The lack of agency and the linear nature to this game provide nothing in the way of replayability. As if that weren’t enough the enemy types, weapons and armor, and itemization in general lack variety. I understand that this isn’t a sandbox or open world and I wasn’t expecting or needing it to be either of those things. I just was not expecting the lack of variety and agency that this game offers especially after all the great reviews. The thing that I have yet to see described in any FF16 related content is the fact that the entirety of a playthrough is 60% to 70% cutscenes…at a minimum. The thing I found myself doing more than anything in this game was waiting for cutscenes to end only for another cutscene to commence immediately. You do have the option to skip them but that just leaves you with the bones of an arcade game.
Overall I’m very disappointed. It’s possible I would have enjoyed the game going in with the expectation that it was an interactive movie, kind of like Telltale on steroids. I do think that there are a lot of positives to the game and a lot of people will enjoy it. Sad to say I did not.

How can people say that the combat is good? It’s super easy and very very basic. This is nowhere near one of the franchises best, not even close.
The Tales series, and the Star Ocean series does the “action” combat far better. As a video game FF15 is 5/10 average, as a FF main entry it’s 3/10 at best.

Not an RPG. Fans of meaningful gameplay will feel robbed by this very restrictive visual thrill ride. It would be far better if it did not carry the Final Fantasy name, because it only wears the garb of the series. Underneath? Nothing.

The game reviewed well but probably won’t sell very well since most of the FF fans really don’t care about it because it’s not really a FF game. I have like zero interest in it and I love RPGs, it’s probably because this really isn’t an RPG. It’s also SUPER linear which is going to be a huge pass for a lot of FF fans, it’s FF13 all over again.

The script of this review is so uneven. Some really casual slang used besides elevated language, was really hard to listen to. Pick a lane!

FFVII Remake on Hard difficulty has the best combat system EVER for an action rpg IMHO almost soulslike in how perfectly crafted it was. Wish the hard difficulty was unlockable without beating the game on normal first thou.

What really frustrates me about these newer Final Fantasy games is not that they aren’t good, it’s that they are good, great even, and I love them… but I can’t help but still feel the loss of the traditional Final Fantasy game, and the success of these games makes me feel like we will never go back to that. So, I am caught in a place where I am frustrated that the games they are making are so good, but are still not quite what I am wanting them to be. I would really love to see them take the franchise and split it. One branch making these new, more linear, action games. The other, a turn-based, super open world, more exploration-heavy game… with AIRSHIPS in it again. God, I miss the excitement of getting your first airship mid-game. The flying mod to the car in XV just didn’t quite pull that off. I do like the more mature approach though for both game types. Sadly, I know I am wishing for something not likely to ever happen.

This game has some of the worst motion blur I’ve ever seen in a game. Graphics mode is unplayable because the entire screen is a blurry mess. Performance mode has dips but at least I can actually see.

im glad I didnt wacth any trailers and avoided as much because I was so dissapointed when FFXV showed most stuff on trailers… playing the Demo was so impressive!!! it had me shocked by some if the events that were happening and Clive is such an amazing chatacter cant wait to play the whole thing

Game looks incredible but I’m worried it won’t have any humor in it.
The FF series used to be a balance between deep moments and funny moments that kept you invested in the characters and wanting to see them win. These past few FF titles have been very dark in their tone and way too serious throughout the whole story. Fingers crossed that I’m wrong with this one.

So this is Witcher 3 without the droll story, clunky combat, non-imaginative npc’s, and to top it off chore side quests?

I’m more than OK with side quests being “mundane” because those are things I can do without my GF watching and while playing on my phone with remote play.

It would be cool if the demo demonstrated even a quarter of what I’m seeing in this video. The demo bored me so quickly with terrible dialogue, constant cutscenes every 15 feet, and using the same combo on incredibly easy enemies. I’ll wait for this to be on sale.

As a person who transitioned away from PS gaming to PC gaming, only played FFXIV:ARR, and know FF series through playing the Kingdom Hearts series.
I watched the demo gameplay, and already regret that this game won’t come out on PC anytime soon. This is probably the first FF game launch that I was pumped for.
I played Dragon Age Origin as a teen and never found another game that capture the fantasy genre as well as that for me. I think FFXVI is the closest I’ve felt from the lore that I have watched so far.

Maybe it’s time to buy a PS5.

This is the only Final Fantasy I’ve ever had any interest in, due to it clearly being inspired by Game of Thrones and set in a medieval European setting. I honestly don’t think I’ll be able to stomach those hideous pretty boy characters, hairstyles and that flamboyant anime combat though. So.. unappealing.

Graphics look last gen

Final Fantasy series should stick to its “Fantasy” core settings and costumes just like FFX. Sticking to Medieval/European costumes in my bias opinion is not what Final Fantasy known for.

I fear the reviewers are going a little too far with the hype surrounding this game. It might be a decent game but I fear it’s not that perfect in many aspects. I think we’ll see this somewhere between 7/10 and 8/10 when the dust settles.

I would’ve preferred if this review didn’t have so many moments highlighting specific story cutscenes that weren’t in the demo but overall still an awesome review! Super excited for the game!

To short story and not good enough sidequests…1/3 price and maybe ill take it

So its an RPG from the company thats defined videogame RPGs for decades and the quests and main story arent even up to par with a game released almost a decade ago (Witcher 3). But the combat is good. So basically they made an action combat game.

I tried the demo, and I dont actually understand the hype. Its a good game yes, but people react like its the best ff ever. Does not make sense to me..

I played the demo and instantly pre ordered it. I haven’t been this excited for a Final Fantasy game since Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy VII Remake.

So this game is on the same level as gow ragnarok and dmc5 with the 9/10? Pre ordered.

Ofcourse its 9/10 they can’t give a triple A game anything else but why are they avoiding talking about the bland sidequests and lack of meaningful side content

If I have to choose 1 point to be taken off a perfect score, side quests would be what I’d settle.

Still not sure why this is an exclusive. Square complains about “not having a market” and then doesn’t give it an opportunity to grow. Look at Persona: those games got surprise Xbox releases, and now the company had a bunch of announcements at the Xbox showcase, which indicates to me that they performed pretty well! Happy for PS5 players, but confused as to why something as huge as Final Fantasy is still sticking to timed exclusivity

I wish I could play it, but I’m not buying a PS5 for it.

My issue with this is there are too many cinematics theres little to no gameplay when it comes to being outisde of battle or exploration. The game does too many things for the player like pick up items and move around when you should be the one doing those things. The combat is pretty easy and no much challenge. Its all glashy moves to keep you engaged but thats it.

Meh, looks like a great game, but not a system seller like everyone expected.

The only thing I didn’t like were the Quick Time Events… other than that it’s really good. FF16 is the only game that can challenge TotK for GOTY, realistically]

For people who don’t know. Square Enix already acknowledged and addressed the framerate issue. Many problems will be fixed in the Day-1 patch 1.03+ (Demo was version 1.01) but the biggest fps fix will be a post launch patch, if options to turn off Motion Blur and so on. My guess is patch will drop after 1-2 weeks, so if you want the full FF16 experience, just wait a bit. Also @DigitalFoundry will surely make a in-depth video of how the performance of FF16 is.

Probably not GOTY, but definitely a Final Fantasy game that’s worth being excited for and I think that’s just as important
