Final Fantasy 16 Story/Plot Explained
Got a little carried away when watching the FF16 trailer and ended up making a whole breakdown on the little details I’ve noticed so far that help build out the world of Final Fantasy 16. That combat looks so smooth and the graphics are insane, really can’t wait to try it! Leave a comment with how much of this will be wrong by the time the final game comes out, I’d be shocked if it’s less than 50%

Decent attempt here.
I actually think that Ifrit took Clive’s body for a moment – the Eikon Challenge left me with so many questions at the end but the one that talks to Clive… must’ve been Ifrit…
This will be my first Final Fantasy game experience. I’ve never been interested in past games, but this pure action version of FF has my attention, the more I see of it, the more sold I am.
Joshua is going to sacrifice himself at the final act.
Do you like dragon quest?
Is this PlayStation only?
I’ll come back to see how much you got right
I’d go w/ more weapon designs, like a different Tizona (gold-plated hilt w/ upswept quillons, two red jewels on the guard, one-handed ricasso, AND hexagonal blade section), Durendal, Colada, Excalibur, Fragarach, Claiomh Solais, Galatine, Laevatein, Clarent, AND Caliburn. Plus, the story needs a redemption arc.
I feel as if this specific title is going to be game changer for future titles going off the comment about the crystal at the end of the trailer.
first time finding your channel. PS. what’s that ending song on this episode, is that like a Holiday special Kindomhearts soundtrack?
I’m salty cuz i thought that guy on the cover was noctis😔
I don’t think the protagonist ages into the other guy. I think the shield of the phoenix and the guy with the longer hair are two different people and we’re going to get a story told from two sides of the conflict, one trying to kill the dominant of Phoenix and the other trying to protect him
Medieval aw😩😫
The two sides of fire. Destructive and cleansing/restorative
Is noctis Finna be in 16?
What if the plot twist by end of story is that the MC was actually the Phoenix dominate, thinking & believing like everybody else that Joshua was the Phoenix, but we find out there was a ” Coue de’ eta ” where the only the higher ups of the kingdom knew Joshua was actually the dominate of Ifrit, but it was a top classified secret that only few knew, and somebody high up who knew this was actually working for an enemy of the kingdom, and tried to either kidnap or murder Joshua because they knew he was the dominate of Ifrite, and our MC could be some guy who was adopted by the royal family and trained to be the protecting knight of Joshua because they knew that for some reason the he was able to use more of dominate power from Josh..since *IF* both these characters are actually dominates, they both would obviously carry fire elementals, therefore indistinguishable to the fellow civilian of the kingdom who ever sees them use their fire magic.
*(unless the Phoenix enitiy “shows” itself to someone who has a “will of fire” and has proven themselves through some form of “rebirth” in their life offers itself as whome it chooses—which may be our MC at some point of the story)
But WHAT IF *PLOT TWIST: NOBODY IN THE ENTIRE KINGDOM ever knew that our MC was actually the dominate of the Phoenix, and there could be flash backs revealing his childhood origins, that or *maybe* the Higher ups knew he was the Phoenix dominate (if this true) and that’s why they trained & paired him with Joshia to be his protector, but they just decided to keep all this a secret.
And this would make sense story wise as the whole story off our Protagonist is that he starts of humble and Big brother like figure to Josh, and after seeing his entire kingdom destroyed and becoming essentially a ronin type figure for many years, he finally will get his revenge on Ifrite, and then maybe it will be revealed that he can summon the Phenoix, and that Joshua was actually the host for Ifirit, and as his shield…to finally get his revenge, will have to free Joshua from the clutches of his dark fate by letting him finally ” rest” and our MC, who just spent the whole story going from having a “life” to it all becoming “destruction” to *finally* having a “rebirth” near the end, as that may be what this FF’s story theme most likely is about–Hence The Phoenix vs Ifirit
This all would make complete sense as *FF is KNOWN* for having all the stories follow a specific *Epic, Tragic & then Bitter-Sweet wholesomeness type story stelling*
I wonder if it’s in the same timline with ffxv
In the Japanese trailer, the MC screams at the end of the trailer where it says in english (joshua wake up) “my brother”, using the word: otouto which is used to refer to a younger brother. Furthermore, it does look like the earring joshua is wearing and the one “shield” is wearing are a set. Therefore, it has been theorised that perhaps much like GOT, the MC is a bastard son. Personally, I cannot wait for the game!
We can see that the protagonist has the power of phoenix and titan when he fights
All i know is unnamed hero so there is a good chance of character creation
I personally think. There’s main characters. each on opposing sides. I know they look similar but I think it’s that type of Final Fantasy where you be two mains instead of the being same guy. That’s just the way I see it. Plus I think it would less appealing if the main character was the crusader. In my opinion it just makes the most sense.
I’m sick of people saying this is going back to old settingwhen it looks almost exactly like FF14. People act like it went FFVII, FFVIII, FFX, FFXIII, FFXV with nothing inbetween them.
When Delita becomes the MC , learns the art of DMC and duels the witcher and … Find out next time on Devil May Fantasy XVI!
What we have seen in the trailer is that playable character(s) can fight using the powers of eikons, including a phoenix wing, and titan’s fists, and we know that Ifrit is counter to ifrit based on the title art. Everything else is speculative.
Nobody knows the story.
Misleading/clickbait title
Clans with their own summons battling one another….
Just like naruto and the other jinchurikis
They seem to be after the crystals of each tribe which may be whats granting them the powers of the eikons. Seems like The protagonists can use the Titan and Phoenix powers in the beginning. If I had to guess they have N alliance and we’re betrayed. I think we’re trying to kill/save Joshua in this story. To me it looked like Joshua was absorbing the “blight” thus becoming ifrit. The guy was shocked of another fire dominant(maybe protagonist) because he was one of the people to betray them(blonde guy). Fast forward the tribes are still trying to unite the crystals(eikon powers)
People are complaining about the graphics
Uauh, amazing. I couldn’t have got so many things from that trailer… None of them actually xD
Amazing, now I’m more hype, if thats posible
Which is the song at the end? Is kh, that much I know, but I don’t know which one
most excited i’ve been for a new Final Fnatasy game in 20 years.
Joshua the last fire bender.
The marking is like the fal’Cie in ff 13
think it’s the Lucis past, you can see puppy umbra, in ffxv titan was in ice and in this video you can see him fighting with shiva, too shiva look like same in ffxv, the first guy how talk in beginning look like “COR” the immortal, too I heard about “shield” of the joshua like gladiolus, the first theme song are the same of ffxv
How can you call it an explanation? This is all conjecture but here you are, peddling your thoughts…
This is why I unsubscribed from you. Pretentious, is what you are
I don’t think the man/soldier/knight that killed the guardian or father of Joshua is the same man that kicked the dragoon or the man that led Joshua away in the beginning. Different hair. I think the man that led Joshua away at 1:38 and the man at 2:21 is the same man at 3:11, which is a different man from the man that killed Joshua’s guardian or father at 2:25.
What’s wrong with these graphics
It’s worth noting that the expression “Mother Crystal” might be referring to FFXIV’s “Hydaelyn” – In that game, characters use her crystals shards to summon and even become Eikons themselves.
Since Naoki Yoshida (FFXIV’s Producer/Director) is also producing this game, I would assume that they’re trying make a big single player game in that same universe.
I got NOTHING from story in the trailer, how are people making these videos
I can’t wait. Also, is anyone else getting Final Fantasy Type-0 vibes?
where is my boy Bahamut
That young kids voice doesn’t seem so young…
Another theme of “Blight” like ff7 and ff15. I hope they don’t mess it up.
Great analysis. I see this as the FF game that’ll break almost all of the expected tropes of the series. It is indeed true that the FF series has tried to reinvigorate itself and capture the magic of the old days while also trying to innovate itself within the limitations SE and the fanbase set on the franchise for what should constitute a main series Final Fantasy game. And unfortunately, the results have been less than stellar. Ever since 13, the series has been fighting an uphill battle to reach the critical acclaim it once had. I loved XV, but I know it was a heavily flawed game and wasn’t the game it was promised to be. And in all honesty, I think a lot of us fans played a part in the stagnation. Many of us ourselves don’t want FF to break out of its traditions and we complain too much when SE tries to do something different. I see a lot of people angry about the direction this game is headed. Me personally, I’m hyped for this because it actually looks like it has some of the things I’ve been asking for from a major FF game for a long time, and I’ll mention them in the changes I’ve noticed below.
The first obvious and noticeable change to the expected formula within XVI is that it looks like it’ll be a very dark game in the franchise, with an emphasis on a far more darker plot line with a focus heavy on the politics of the in game world. We haven’t seen a plotline heavy on politics since FFT and 12, but neither of these games were super dark. There’s a lot more blood and gore too. And while a dark and deep plot of tragedy was promised with Versus XIII, we never got that game. Perhaps SE are trying to redeem themselves in that regard with this. I’d also say this is Final Fantasy’s take on a grim fantasy setting ala Attack on Titan, though some design inspiration seems like it came from XIV too.
The combat system also looks like a major departure from expected gameplay norms. From what was shown, this looks more inline with character action games like Devil May Cry than any traditional Action RPG FF game. There was no evidence of any party members, or at least not for any prolonged period. The majority of the combat footage was the player character going solo against enemies. But the great thing about this combat system, from what I’ve seen, is that it looks like it has real depth and complexity. Ryota Suzuki is a veteran Capcom dev who’s worked on DMC5, Dragon’s Dogma and Monster Hunter. He’s been added to the team developing this game as the combat system designer. The inspiration for the combat is evident and it is easy to presume we’ll be getting a combat system that’ll appeal to hack and slash fans and people who like action combat systems that have depth and meta-systems within them. Something that was unfortunately lacking in XV’s flashy but otherwise simple combat system.
These changes may not appeal to long time fans, but perhaps this breaking of tradition is what Final Fantasy needs to reach new heights. We’ll see once this game arrives. I personally can’t wait.
That’s pretty amazing, only 23% incorrect, well played 😘
I hope that mark on MC face is magic not tattoo because I want to remove it along the story if I was to play this game…it look stupid as fuck.
I’m gonna assume that the girl who was with Joshua was Shiva’s Dominant, mainly because she seems almost too important to not be mentioned again. But this is merely speculation, we have no clue who she is.
reminds me of FFIII and Vagrant Story
Love it! getting some Attack on Titan secret person who can turn to summons/titan vibes, itll be so cool if they play with the fact that dominants are unkown for each kingdom so throughout the game no one knows whos a dominant….until BAM wallamaria is destroyed lol.
Also getting Naruto Jinchuriki (how ever u spell it) influence too with people holding huge monsters in them and are used as weapons for their countries
And as top comment mentioned if each kindgom has a element they can use thatll be fun to see how that works out. Get some avatar the last airbender in this story too lol
There is a common thread in many FF games : to break the cycle. Phoenix is a summon that can potentially bring an infinite cycle of rebirth. It’s possible in some ways to have this in FFXVI once again
where’s the link to bio roxas’s breakdown?
what does he say at 2:24? i can’t make it out
Damo, are familiar with ffxiv lore at all ? Do you play ?
so basically the FF16 is JOJO!!
WAAAAAAIT A MINUTE HERE
Young kids within an empire with the power to summon or TRANSFORM into dangerous creatures, and are, because of this, deemed extremely dangerous/Valuable by their country and others?
Maybe I’m just too much of a weeb, but I sense some heavy influence from Attack on Titan, which pleases me greatly
Nothing is better then the speculations before release <3
Thank you so much for this! This makes me even more excited for the game!!
I get this feeling that they are like Kingsglaive from FFXV
No our character is the Phoenix joshua is ifrit
Is it possible the two protaganists are from opposing realms (twin realms). To my ear their accents are slightly different. Maybe the Phoenix and Ifrit represent the two opposing realms? I may be reading too much into it.
Yes! Finally a Final Fantasy in a classic Fantasy setting 😊
This was a very well informed prediction you may have just earned a sub
“Eikon?” British people? I think I heard Soken music? We sure this isn’t a ffxiv expansion?
Stumbled across your video while looking for more information about the story of this game. Really cool analysis, dude! I thoroughly enjoyed your breakdown and it made me watch the trailer a couple more times. This game looks awesome!
It seems like the protag is looking for revenge on ifrit for joshuas death since you can see that ifrit tears apart something (most likely phoenix) while someone screams “wake up Joshua.”
This looks dark and gore filled… I NEED more!!!
When I saw the beginning I almost thought this was 15 prequel or 14 but another realm as both these stories stated wars amongst the gods at some point. Also I dont like how we’ve had so many futuristic type plots only to go back to medieval times
I have to wonder if the crystals work the same as Espercite from FF6
I’d like to point out that the main character probably doesn’t use anything but fire related attacks during the half where he’s Joshua’s shield, as he is from a clan that uses fire as their main magic, which you can see him doing during his fights where he’s casting several fireballs and doing that one dash which upon further glance might be fire, but as a fire dash kinda like the Fire Shields from Sonic if I’m being honest. But I can also back this up by saying throughout the trailer, the Shiva clan was casting solely ice magic which fits since their clan worships an ice Eikon. Also the other soldiers with Joshua could also use fire magic as well, just like the protagonist. All-in-all, it’s just a detail I thought I should point out.
I think Ifrit’s Dominant in another person. Possibly the one who chopped the head off that guy. Joshua transforms in Phoenix and they fight. As a matter of fact, there is a scene where you can see Ifrit ripping apart possibly Phoenix. That’s why they’re shouting at him: Joshua, wake up.
Note: my apologies in advance for my syntax. English is my second language.
Damn you for clickbaiting me with that title! (Great vid man, can’t wait to play alongside you all this promising game)
I have a feeling that Phoenix and Ifrit on the title screen might have some symbolism to it.
Phoenix represents rebirth and transformation as the photo of the Phoenix is rising above Ifrit from the way that it is placed. Ifrit represents the opposite of the Phoenix, death and destruction.
So I could see the theme of this one could be life, death and rebirth.
Xigbar Scar?
Graphically speaking it looks weird like… FF15 looks better in ultra, is it really the luminous engine?, Or just the unreal engine?, Cause luminous shows waaaay more fidelity, I mean, was square the one that shows agnis philosophy on a titan black sli setup, this new consoles should’ve as powerful, sadly this also mean that ARPG are here to stay in FF franchise…
Anywho, hopefully it uses DLSS on the pc version.
Great analysis! This game can shape up to be something amazing! Very reminiscent of FFXIV and it’s different states.
Thanks Damo, very helpful! As an aside I wonder if the text about the legacy of the crystal is also a meta-comment; perhaps this game is trying to break from FF tradition in some way?
The tradition of the FF series and the logo always describes the story so.., what do u think the story talks about this time
Can we just appreciate this man? And also the music composer. Damn, that phoenix vs ifrit music scene.
I will probably get into ff 14 now that’s where the graphics feel from that style. Yoshi p is very well respected so I’ll give it a shot.
that was fast
There is a 16?
Wha-
Already?!
Sheesh, you really were able to get a lot of info in such a short trailer, kudos!
