Nah, it shouldnt be this bad. Just play some other PS5 titles then you boot rebirth in performance mode, its like “what the hell happened! My PS5 is broken??”
do not let this guy review Final Fantasy games anymore, this Mac gamer lied in his PC review of FF7 Remake.
ff16 hands down the best looking game I have ever played my god.
This game so badly needs a 40fps mode.
we play rpgs for the story and characters, I know its shocking.
Funny how reviewers rate this games with 10’s while other games with these clunky movement animations, and visual representation would have resulted in a way lower rating. I really don’t like what they delivered in terms of visuals, mechanics etc. Feels like a rush job where they wanted to do stuff but could not get enough time to polish and refine. My head and eyes hurt watching at the stutter in 30fps mode, my heart breaks at the low resolution textures that are in your face, shadows that disappear for no reason just for it to show up again walkin a meter or 2, weird dynamic lighting (under Junon I had a point where a whole section was overbrighted to the max and some where almost pitch black, light leaks and bad shadow occlusion, clunky jumping animation and overal traverse animations, the camera movement is horrible. Its so janky at times that it flashes between two states which gets a bit to much. I think people need to come down from that pink cloud they are riding (Dutch saying, and no pun intended) and see that this game feels very unfinished. The linear parts of the game are better. In my experience, this game does not earn the praise beyond the story aspect. And im a real ff7 fan.
ahh again console next gen looks like 720p from ps3 era lol
Give us 40fps mode ffs!!
I don’t care about quality of the game or visuals when it’s a simple fact that a game that can’t run 60 at a decent resolution is a sign of incompetence. There were beautiful games on PS2, PS3, and PS4, but now with all the ‘power’ of PS5 you need to pick between performance or fidelity? No. Inability to properly budget memory and polygons is purely a competence issue and this is just a fact. Why can horizon zero dawn run at 4k60 on a PS5 and look just as good with a fully open world as rebirth does with a restricted one on lower resolution at barely 30? It’s not like unreal engine is lacking in technical capabilities in comparison to decima, but you turn on the photo mode and zoom out a little bit and rebirth looks like it had a stroke. Meanwhile performance mode would give a Gameboy a run for its money on pixel count, might as well be a mosaic, and poppin is invasively extensive. I’m so tired of console developers pushing visual clutter over performance where it’s not necessary.
You can’t win. At least with FFXVI graphics mode looked good even if it was at 30fps.
Rebirth on the order hand you can’t win. Either pick extreme levels of TAA ghosting at 30fps or Vaseline filter at 60 fps.
Performance modes in games a lot these days have resolutions in between 1080p and 1440p, usually closer to 1080. This is a bit ridiculous. Id have expected that from PS4 pro, and Xbox one X, it the next Gen consoles that came afterwards.
And people will be saying it’s too early for a PS5 Pro. 🤣
Well well well…
So apparently not only Xbox games are at 30 fps, right?
Are you gonna eat your words, fanboys?
What a mess is this game in the graphics department.
You cannot hide that. Letdown of the year so far…
Do you have to play remake before rebirth?
I dont have any of these issues with the game. Not sure how or why but i dont
1152p for performance? Looks more like 480p
Set PS5 output to 1080p to correct the bad upscale post-processing blurriness! (Performance mode).
4K TVs set PS5 output to 1080p, no blurriness on performance mode looks much better! 👍😁
IMO they should have gone with a more drawing like art style instead of going for realism.
I just read that the games director acknowledges the performance mode issues and is working on a patch to fix it.
I’m definitely having a lot of fun with this one it is a little annoying that quality mode is unplayable and performance mode is blurrier than it should be I hope they fix it soon but I’ll probably have 100% it by the time they do that
I definitely get the feeling this game was rushed all in all
30 fps……que basura es la PS5.
They made tifa and aeris looke like they want to eat you every time they look at you
This is not a 1st party game. Why can’t they just release simultaneously on PC ffs.
To avoid spoilers, 40% of the game. Crack on DF.
AAA game still running on UE4 on a 4 year old console, no bells and whistles, might as well throw this on PS4
Would have been nice if there was a slider for motion blur on the options. Final Fantasy XVI had this and made the 30fps mode more pleasant in the eyes. I hope Square enix patch it
Why do a tech review on cur scenes lol
I will never understand why games aren’t optimized for a 60FPS, 1440p Graphics mode. You’d get the fidelity and FPS at a fairly standard resolution
9:07 I can’t believe we still have not reached “FOLIAGE THAT ACTUALLY MOVES WHEN YOU WALK THROUGH IT” next gen which is now current gen is MORE THAN CAPABLE OF IT, for some reason devs are just too lazy to do animations for it, why is that so hard? I would seriously be more impressed at this point by detailed animations over just pretty visuals that are stiff, that just doesn’t cut it anymore.
If you can hop on one leg why can’t Barret climb with one arm?
Man, performance mode looks like a switch game. Wtf.
9:31 perfect lip sync
It’ll be fixed on the Pro or PS6 with the release of Intergrade 2 😅
You all saw the disappearing deer @3:53 right?
Yeah not watching this too much gameplay from past chapter 3 in the video. Cmon guys spoilers much
On my LG CX Oled it looks so blurry it hurts. Graphic Mode looks fine but that 30fps is choppy like hell. It feels not like 30 fps, it feels much worse. For me the game is unplayable
Lets be honest , it disappoints man …
The performance is better than last the game
16 looked and ran terrible in performance mode. Its “quality” is because its an entirely different scope of game while rebirth is trying to be an actual video game instead of a sequence of hallways and then the credits.
Great reaview Ollie, really disappointing to see the end result here – looks atrocious at times. Clearly looks primed for a similar directors cut for new consoles with the problems fixed. PC will inevitably be riddled with UE4 stutter
More graphical means need more power right? We need PS5 Pro or PS6 for next gen FF.
Any news about future patches for the game..Or the devs are happy withe the sales and they move on
I’m waiting for the eventual PS5 Pro. The performance mode is great when it comes to holding a steady framerate, but the fidelity is just not where it needs to be. Graphics mode is nicer to look at. However, the fluidity is just not that pleasing to the eye, especially when it’s in full motion. I pray that they don’t re-release this game for PS6. Instead, just tweak the settings for the PS5 Pro version because I literally do not want to wait for an intergrade version of Rebirth.
The lack of proper shadows and ambient occlusion is sad. Cause the pure asset quality and lighting has a lot of beauty to it, but without the nuance of proper shadows to ground everything, it comes off very flat.
Crazy how their 7 year old FF on PS4 looks and performs miles better than this “next gen” game.
Love these detailed reviews. Game still looks great though.
Performance mode looks like dogshit.
Wow! Great job Square. You surely spent alot of time upgrading the assets in the game! 2:37
Performance mode looks like garbage compared to Remake, on a 32” 4K monitor. I’m tempted to scale down to a 27” 4K monitor now…
Square Enix did a fantastic job with Remake … WTF happened to Rebirth?? There’s just no excuse — if Horizon Forbidden West can pull it off — why can’t this??
2:36 TIIIIIFFFFFAAAAAAAAAAAA
Seems like Square hasn’t been able to get the performance mode right in Remake and XVI. Strange. As much as I’d prefer Performance Mode, it’s too blurry for these games. Graphics Mode isn’t too bad. I’m fine with it.
game on a lg oled c2 tv, the difference between quality and performance mode is very noticeable! in quality mode the game is much sharper and more beautiful even in the textures, now in performance mode the game is blurred with washed textures and without definition only in the cutscenes and that improves a little. Anyway, it’s a shame for a game called Final Fantasy to come like this for a new generation of consoles, Square Enix didn’t take advantage of the power of the PS5, the graphics in performance mode is disappointed
its so weird when a game released 20 years later doesn’t have some of the features that ps2 games had like water ripples and reflections
I really think final fantasy games in general should hit pc day one because the console version still struggles to hit 60fps on performance mode that mayority gamer choose to play. No one is paying $70 to play it on 30fps.🤷🏾♂️🤦🏽♂️
Hard disagree about FF16, I thought it looked terrible especially the performance mode.
9:31
the ui also looks strangley low res. the icons in the menu look mostly fine but the big menu elements look like cheap jpegs and i don’t know if thats only me or the game. Remakes UI was superb in that regard
For me the way some structures appear in the distance can really break immersion. Especially compared to ff16
I just started the game. I played Intermission a few days ago and the difference in graphical quality is jarring so I immediately came here to make sure I wasn’t crazy. I’m still in Nibelheim but so far Graphics mode is much sharper but feels like 20fps. Performance is significantly smoother but is so blurry that I can tell sitting 10ft from the TV and my god when I actually walked up to it to see how blurry it was, I was kind of astonished at how bad it was. Graphics mode feels unplayable to me so I guess I just have to deal with Performance. I hope they do something to fix this soon.
This game should run 200+ fps with how it looks , its nothing short of ps2 graphics.
8:52 the reflection on the water is really annoying, that’s the same in many games (Hogwarts Legacy, Cyberpunk 2077), why there is the effect ?
12:40, those blue pipes in the “graphics mode” look like an upscaled PS2 asset… What were they doing with this game? It looks like a hot mess -_-
The amount of pop in in this game is insane, also has graphical bugs even in graphics mode. Crazy how no one is speaking how bad it is.
This is not a hardware issue this is a developer and UE4 issue. Other games using other game engines look and run great on ps5 in performance mode . Just look at forbidden west
The Anti-aliasing on the hair and foliage is exceptionally bad and yes the lighting and shadows is very inconsistent and don’t even get me started on the obvious pop in and glitches throughout the world.
Performance mode streaming over Chiaki4 Deck to a steam deck OLED is absolutely the best way to play Rebirth IMO. I’d love to see the performance mode be better but it just doesn’t look good on my LG C2 and definitely suffers from the normal issues 30fps has on an OLED. The smaller screen of the steam deck essentially has no concessions with performance mode.
I was shocked how bad performance mode looks. This may be one i wait to play until its patched
I know this sounds weird. But try using the system settings to force 1080p.
For whatever reason i think forcing 1080p in performance mode looks better than 2160p and 1440p using performance mode.
Or maybe its just my imagination? I dunno.
This is hilarious, I see why fans of this franchise are pissed 😤😂😂💀😂
I would choose graphics mode. Honestly, graphics mode for remake was absolutely tolerable, I actually didn’t mind it whatsoever and I’m 99% of the time a pc player on a 240hz monitor. It just worked great and was paced well, with great motion blur. Spider-Man was the closest comparable in this regard! But what the hell, 1100p? Insanity! I’m waiting on the PC release; I just can’t get over bad shadow cascade and pop-in, in games like this, it is just SO distracting! The cuts are just disappointing in general and the bad traversal animations are the cherry on top. Super weird
I haven’t started the game yet, but the colors look so washed out. Remake’s colors were very vibrant and incredible, but Rebirth looks… too bright?? Like the saturation has been lowered by a bunch. I’m sure I’ll get used to it, but it’s very noticeable, having just replayed Remake.
We really need a dynamic mode with 30-ish fps while exploring and 60fps when entering any battle
I pre-ordered the deluxe but I will keep playing my backlog until they fix this game.
I’ve been playing in graphics mode. It’s jarring at times but I’m managing
Very disappointing seeing as how gorgeous and well developed FF16 looks even on performance mode
Big ups Tifa’s goodies.
Performance mode always.
I know you guys touched up on bad textures but after playing the game I can’t believe some of them.
There is a particular flower that appears inside buildings in the demo that has really bad textures it looks like a mass of polygons with barely any semblance of it looking like a flower. If you told me it was colorful ice cream I would believe you.
This flower appears after the Nibelhime intro in other areas of the game and I can’t believe this is in the game. I mean it’s just hideous something that I would expect from a PS3 game or worse.
Plenty of other bad textures all around but I think this one is the most awful to me.
I also can’t believe the game looks so blurry even in quality mode even doing something like VR missions in which there is not a lot of stuff going on.
Remake looks so crisp in performance compared to Rebirth on graphics mode it’s kind of unbelievable.
Also something you guys didn’t touch upon is pop in. There is a crazy amount of pop in even at short distances. One I saw was so short a distance that it was inside a house and walking two steps would make the item have disappearing parts.
How can this game have such massive visual problems? The game was rushed in my eyes.
Graphically isn’t that different than Remake on PS4 apart from the cutscenes that are of higher quality but the differences are only apparent when compared side by side!! So it’s quite disappointing in that regard!
“Your relationship with Tifa has changed.”
“Your relationship with Aerith has changed.”
“Your relationship with Red XIII has changed.”
Wait, back up
They should’ve asked to use the horzion franchise game engine
Performance mode has been really blurry in my experience and kind of distracting. Hoping they can fix that
Seeing these piss poor graphics performance on the latest games on the PS5 makes me really sad and also appreciate what Guerrilla Games have done and developed in HFW – they’re technical geniuses. It looks absolutely incredible and runs flawlessly – in any mode. The Decima engine is THE defining game engine for the PS5 from the ground up.
1440p display. MY BALLS! It looks like Gameboy Advance. XD
30fps is unplayable.
60fps is blurry so unplayable
OK waiting on PC version.
Since I’m playing on an Oled tv, I play at 60 fps…. 30 fps is almost unplayable on an oled screen.
At least this developer understands that the words “performance mode” _ACTUALLY FUCKING MEAN SOMETHING._ I’m sick of games with so-called “performance modes” that run like absolute dogshit. FF16, Jedi Survivor (at launch, prior to the far-too-late fix), etc. At least here they did what they had to do to ensure that the _performance mode_ actually, you know, _PERFORMS._ It also doesn’t look _nearly_ as bad as some of you are making it out to look.
I almost bought a ps5 just for this game. while I have a PC with a 4080.
gotta stay patient.
I think it’s unfair to compare the visuals of this game to FF16 and FF7 Remake. This game is way more ambitious than either of those titles when it comes to both the gameplay and the design of the world.
“I did notice a bit of ghosting as well but it’s otherwise a good image results” !!
Both Quality and Performance modes have it, it’s so bad and so annoying.
This video could have been : Tifa model upgrade, 100% buy
One hell of a game though. Unbelievably good.
Good to see you covering this game, Oliver. We wouldn’t want to see John slog through another open world game (a type of game he notoriously despises, apparently).
The Zack intro sequence especially looked almost like a PS3 game, the quality in character modelling between this part of the game and lets say the beginning of chapter 2 almost looks like two different games, I wonder how a huge difference like that can be possible.
This game looks like dog poop compared to intergrade you underselling here
FINAL FANTASHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
No idea where this idea of graphics mode holding at 30 comes from. Their example was either cherry picked or something fishy is going on, because graphics mode is anything but a steady 30.
I just wish performance mode didn’t look like a blurry ghosty mess, and graphics mode didn’t run at 10fps with horrible frame pacing. Tech wise this game is an absolute, utter mess.
Thanks for uploading the very first honest review of this game. I’m baffled at how every other media outlet is overestimating how good and pristine this game looks.
I’ve started chapters one and two, and I was shocked by the amount of poor textures and low-res objects – not to mention the annoying amount of pop-in. And despite how lush the open world is, the characters sliding over slopes and the lack of interaction with foliage are way too distracting. Damn, this is a PS5 game. I’ve seen better open worlds in PS4.
I’m in a love / hate relationship with this game. Really hope they see this video and fix it ASAP.
well, i guess im gonna wait till it drops on PC
imagine this on a powerfull PC… 😍
It needs like a 45 fps mode that mixes resolution and fps to find a sweet spot.
Why won’t devs support graphics mode in VRR?
Motion Blur should never exist in video games. And honestly if I could I would turn off shadows just like I do in PC games. I don’t need them.
I hope this gets fixed on pc release😅
Going from Remake on pc last week to this is just awful. It is so blurry. Luckily I have a S95C and use their interpolation tech and play on quality. It isn’t perfect, but it is better that regular 30 fps with the shit off on oled and it isn’t blurry like performance mode. Consoles would be a lot mroe fun this generation if more devs used 40fps modes. I guess not enough ppl have 120hz tvs (which is ridiculous) so they dont feel the need. I feel 40 fps is the sweet spot for consoles and I dont hate it coming from a 4090 high fps pc.
Oli vid 😪
Ff7 remake looks better on ps4 than rebirth on ps5
Playing on Performance, I could care less how a game looks, pretty graphics are by far the last thing I look at, I care more about my shit then graphics. Plus Graphics mode in this game to me has this nauseating and odd stutter and chugs along makes me hella sick, Performance feels and looks smooth which is all I want in a game
Don’t trust y’all anymore, cuz Xbox paid y’all 💯💯💯
It’s like they accidently gave us the PS4 Port on the PS5.
At this rate PS4 Remastered games look better than Native PS5 games. : (!
Seriously, wtf is wrong with the performance mode in this game. 16 had the same problem and it’s still not fixed. 😡
Graphics mode is working great for me. Only time it gets a bit less smooth is some big areas out in the open. I am ising a high quality 2.1 cable running into a Sony TV. Gorgeous picture, wouldn’t think of running in performance mode.
hope they patch the performance mode. its a blurry mess we are not in 2009 with low resolution anymore. please fix it🥲
and before people say its a next gen game or ps5 hardware is outdated, look at spiderman,rdr2,witcher3,god of war etc
The graphics in Rebirth are _such_ a noticeable downgrade from the graphics in Intergrade and and FF16. I am incredibly disappointed in Square for this. However, overall, Rebirth is better gameplay and story wise than Intergrade and FF16 so i’m split on Rebirth.
I’ve been playing on graphics mode and it’s fine on a large TV with sensitivity turned up. I’ll play at 4k 120+ fps on my monitor when it comes to pc. My main problem is the LIGHTING and HDR looks mad washed out
Yeah performance mode is a no go for me. I’m turning my motion blur all the way up for this 1.
The performance mode is giving me Xenoblade 2 vibes. I’ll wait until things get better.
It needs a patch
I still think ff16 looks the best open world wise, those huge mother crystals towering over buildings and just waking through the petal of flowers, leaves as a lone warrior made me feel badass. Plus Clive looks badass himself😂
I have an msi monitor and it has an image strengthening option and it looks amazing.
disappointing to hear and see. FF7 remake looks better
7:14 That animal is hanging with you 🤪
I see the team are also cultured, thanks for 2:36! 😁
I gotta stop pre-ordering games, I seriously though this was Square Enix baby, and they wouldn’t put anything but top quality
RE engine is much better.
This is awful
Square Enix is so burned out with remaking Final Fantasy VII that they did the bare minimum this time around with Rebirth’s graphics! The only hope now is a PC release!
Man I just am having a hard time agreeing with graphics mode being the mode to play here. I’ve played 4 hours and it’s just hard to focus on the world when the camera feels like it’s a blur when turning. It’s literally tiring my eyes
I’m having fun with the game, but damn, FF7 R suffers from the worst pop-in/lowest lod I’ve seen in a while. It’s pretty distracting at times, even in QM.
yeah im gonna wait a month before buying this. the performance in both modes sucks
What’s the likelihood this will be fixed with a future patch?
Performance mode looks fine and runs great. Sorry you guys are that big of cry babies. Im off to play.
While im used to 60fps or higher i have no problem with the 30fps graphics mode because i didnt expect anything else. Ff16’s performance mode was doodoo aswell
Don’t know why there’s so much positive rage for this game while FF16 was comparatively underhyped and looked down upon. It’s story and characters were far superior, and rhe graphics were astonishing in most areas of gameplay.
Every moment I spend in the game I see some wonderful, inspired content practically in the same frame as the cheapest, nose to the grind crunch work possible. It constantly feels like they had a awesome core team doing visionary work and then a much larger B team to fill in the rest. Also, it feels like they got a group of complete 100% amateurs for their compression team that were also on a blazing fast crunch.
lumen probably wouldn’t be a good idea for the next one. lumen is gimmicky and hella flawed. dark scenes will show ghosting and cloudiness artefacts. they should just do whatever they did with ff16
low res textures are the most annoying to me. i can accept the soft image with 60 fps but these textures sometimes look like n64 textures.
16 looks better for sure, hands down. But, 16 was mostly an annoying slog with sidelined female characters and a zero effort evil God behind the scenes manipulating everything and well, I could go on and on. Cid was good and I’m sorta much more neutral about Clive than most seem to be but, what an awfully disappointing game not to mention the watered down DMCV battle system.
7 by contrast, well, I’m a old fan. Aerith pops into view and says “hi” and I’m stoked. I could give an essay on all that I love about it but I’ll abstain. They’re nuts for not migrating to UE5 and while I’m sure it sped up development to just use the first game as a baseline to build this one, they’ll regret it while developing the next title–although they may even then elect to stay with the ancient tech and just publish technical abominations like Bethesda does.
I’ve come across a lot of not just low LOD distance but, straight up bugs with animations freezing in place and who object disappearing just a dozen steps away or so.
What’s insane is I would see flowers pop in after 2 seconds WHEN I’M STANDING RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM. Not something out in the distance, something right in front of me. I’m not one to sweat on these things but something about this game when I play on either graphics or performance, my brains like “this looks like ass and I feel nauseas just looking at the screen”. Not even 5 seconds playing as Zach and I thought something was horribly wrong with the settings. I couldn’t fathom people were playing this and had zero issues with the way the game played and looked.
This game is going to be absolutely *PERFECT* on PC!! God, I so *look forward* to playing this game on my PC!!
besides the TAA blur, we’ve finally surpassed the Final Fantasy movie and cutscene CGI in real-time on a console and on PC it’ll be even more evident.
Blah balh balh, SE is bad Sony is bad, xbox is bad, epic game is bad and everything is bad. Ok granma.
Why no one mentioned this in their reviews?
The game performance is ass
Unfortunately when it comes to PC, I bet there won’t be many improvements to the lighting issues. Square Enix is known for their subpar ports with limited visual options.
Graphics mode the way to go unfortunately. Hopefully DLSS cleans this game up on pc for those who want high frame rates when it gets there
8:40 baffling how a “one armed person can climb like this…”! Meanwhile, the red wolf is 2-front leg climbing next to him…..😏🤣
FF7 Remake 2: Sporefoken Returns
I’ll admit the performance mode doesn’t look the best. But it runs good and that’s the main thing I wanted from it.
Just like every other final fantasy game there are inexcusable visulal flaws everywhere that are impossible to ignore and it takes you out of it for a minute. Why cant square ever finish a game properly before putting it out. And aside from purely visual the npcs look mentally disabled have the time. Like if one has a broom they will stand in one spot with a dumb look on their face. There is no excuse for the flaws in thes games
I have to agree with the lighting and shadow is not up to standard. But i guess there would be cut corners considering the world is quite large.
2:36 you’re welcome, lads
I wish we could compare this to the halo open world release that hit 60fps and had a 120 fbs mode……. and how they absolutely tore it to shreds. even though it looks amazing….
Final Fantasy: Regret
Shame…game still slaps dough!😂
Prioritising cutscenes instead of gameplay. Fml
Never played any of these games. I just know these games have been remade like 1000 times.
I love these videos bc I genuinely appreciate the dedication to keeping publishers/devs accountable for the quality of their games. I love getting riled up like “WOW how could they cut that from the trailer,” and then immediately remember that I would not ever in a million years mention this in front of a hot girl
It’s so weird and disappointing how it looks better sometimes, but also worse a lot of the time compared to Remake.
Loving the game, but this has got to be the most offensive ghosting in any game I have ever played. The amount of it in the combat simulator is insane. There is also something weird going on with the Graphics Mode. When you pan the camera it is so jittery and you lose all detail in the environments.
I don’t quite understand when nearest-neighbor upscaling to 4K went from something people are willing to spend $750 on to being a questionable decision for a game’s developer to make.
The performance mode may look underwhelming, but at least it does its job and actually performs at 60fps for the majority of the game! *looking at you FF16*
Its bizarre how bad it looks at times… baffling really. Great game though
Again for some reason this review is also incredibly forgiving. Just do a side by side comparison with Phantom Liberty in terms of environment assets, NPC, animation and interactivity and Rebirth would look absolutely like a last gen game.
This looks EMBARRASSINGLY bad. Especially the lighting, jeez
I’m glad I wasnt the only one to notice the pretty rough lighting. Definitely the greatest thing that stands out. Not sure what happened ….
Performance mode is atrocious. Its worse than ff16 which was unacceptable in of itself. This is why we need pc and xbox day and date. Nobody wants to play this on ps5, they have no other choice.
Thanks for the video! I’m waiting for the PC release. I still don’t have a ps5 and no way im paying $70 to run a game in semi-4k 30fps. Its 2024 and brand new games struggle to run 30fps 😂🤡
I tried at 1080p and found performance is exactly the same. What a shit show
Why is it so hard this far into the cycle to get locked 4k 30 or 1440 60? The console is capable.
where are now those who praised and kissed the ass of those from sony when they announced ps5 that it does 4k,.8k and other aberrations.
What bothers me the most is when the lighting goes off (no shadows) and character models look like something from PS3 era.
Just check when Cloud/Sephiroth do their synergy ability in the prologue. It’s jarring when Remake character models were always gorgeous no matter what happens on screen.
Also nobody’s gonna mention the weird pop in in the open environments? (bushes disappearing, etc).
John should’ve got this video, I think he would’ve done a better job and go over the history.
I think this game suffers too much from the T rating.
Surprised they used UE4 not trying to compare apples to oranges here but even palworld used UE5 over unity when they realized everything they wanted to do wouldn’t work well on unity.
How did the lighting get worse? Like how dose a dev look at the difference between this and the baked and chose to get rid of all the baked lighting
Cloud’s hair looks greasy in Rebirth.
FF16 not a fair comparison since that game was basically one big cutscene. Nowhere NEAR the depth of FF7 Rebirth.
This would be impressive for a ps3 launch title…
It’s the inconsistency that’s so jarring, I don’t care that much about hi-res textures and good lighting in a game but don’t give me half and half, it sticks out like a sore thumb. A consistent style and quality is more impressive and immersive.
@08:35 While not 1-Armed, I’ve seen a female Competitive Speed Climber scale one of those Walls _barely_ slower than I could close the same distance of level Ground at a very brisk pace.
I’ve also seen Climbers occasionally just hanging off a ledge with only one arm to – _I assume_ – get blood back onto the other soo yea… I don’t think Barret doing all of that 1-Armed is super unrealistic.
Still waiting for the 4K-120 FPS experience of consoles! /s
Console gaming is a scam, and it’s holding back the game industry.
Yea I’d rather not play this crap on PS5 and wait for an unoptimized mess on PC 😂
df actively deleting comments. a new low. even lower than the resolution on this garbage project
Didn’t they announce they wanted to do this game in Unreal 5? How come they went back to unreal 4 again?
FFXVI was incredibl dull looking, artisticly mediocre and technically dubious game. what are you talking about that it was one of the best in these areas….
10:37. You should’ve tried 1080p as well depending on your TV upscaler
soon …. pc
The softness doesn’t really bother me while playing at a distance from my TV, but the lighting issues are very noticeable. Luckily the game is engaging enough that I don’t really think about it that much, but when taking the time to sightsee and look around it kind of sticks out sometimes. Hopefully these were performance related decisions, and when the game finally comes for PC the lighting will be enhanced.
My current gaming TV is temporarily an old VT25 plasma TV and perf mode actually looks… fine? Like obv 1080 is missing some fidelity but it’s not blurry like it is when I put it on my other screens. Turned the sharpening up to 25/100 and it looks good. I have to wonder if they’re using some subpar scaling technique. Like without stuff like DLSS even missing 100p looks blurry on fixed pixel displays. So I wonder if they even have any real scaler going on at all.
The worst part is definitely the subpar / lack / missing AO on many objects. They look completely ungrounded and finished… It’s so strange because it feels like this has been a fixed problem since like the PS4 gen. I’m not sure why we’re still having this come up in 2024.
First game I choose 30 frames because 60 looks terrible.
Hey DF, you guys still afraid of beautiful women? 🙂
Amazing game no doubt it! But i dont see a reason why a ps4 cant run this with some compromises… Or maibe im wrong… anyway good job to square enix.
The game itself is freaking amazing and is so far my favorite FF since FF9 came out 24 years ago. I don’t mind the visuals not being always top notch, but I really wish Square Enix would have a good performance mode to save their lives. I’ve had to get used to 30 fps again for ff16 and this game and it’s jarring. And I don’t want to wait for the PC version (I wish it was day and date since it is a 2024 third party game after all). Of course the PC version will bring in compilation stutters unfortunately.
Could you guys try the performance mode on a 1080p monitor or tv? A lot of us are still playing on 1080p gaming monitors which I imagine is what the performance mode is targeting.
Nowhere close to horizon forbidden west, though it is not surprising. Final Fantasy hasn’t seen an innovation in decades.
Funny how media is trying so forced to save square.
Game looks horrible. Forget about cut scenes, we need to talk about gameplay.
On gameplay more than 50% of this game looks more to a PS3 game than a PS5. And it´s far away to be good as remake.
It´s a 1080p dynamic resolution with low texture, horrible ilumination most of the time, horrible shadow, horrible reflections, DOF, agressive motion blur, a little of chromatic aberration and to complete a film grain.
And this game problem is far from the graphic. It´s what square change from original like Disney trying to do a star wars trilogy.
So far I’m loving the game but yea, the image is noticeably soft
I’ve relatively acclimated to it however. Wont catch me swapping to quality though. That shit felt slow mo
I’m surprised. Square Enix must have invested as much as possible for this project and the result is this… Compared to the similar expansion of God of War Ragnarok (PS4 game!), it’s very disappointing.
Theres so much ghosting you might as well call it a horror game.
4:30 Nah..Look at the bottom of the wheels on that segway. the lighting is just killed by the TAA ghosting to a level so far it goes beyond the viewpoint with over 3 layers of seperate ghosting at different update rates. They gotta fix that up…. I’d rather play with FXAA over this and that’s saying a lot. FSR 3.0 looks less ghosty to me. Gee if it’s stuck like this? its gonna be a long wait for the PC port.
They need to work with the decima engine
This looks abysmal, nothing about this feels next gen, horizon forbidden west looks 3 times as good as this, low res textures bad ghosting and blurry in both modes. Huge pass until it’s £10
I like the character models but the overall graphics is a big disappointment
FFXVI: better Graphics, worse FF
FFVIIRB: Worse Graphics, better game and an actual FF
i ll take Rebirth over XVI in a heartbeat
2:37: “your relationship with tifa has changed”….well. what relationship would not change after that!?
Performance mode looks like crap. Oh well, I only use Graphics mode anyway.
Insanely bad release technically
It’s a shame that the developers didn’t have time to upgrade to UE5.
According to the words of Naoki Hamaguchi who is the director of Rebirth, they felt that UE5 was still incomplete and that they would have wasted time in the transition.
And so this winning time was used to create custom tools to boost UE4 to be able to realize the vision of the game.
These kinds of decisions are usually made because developers are short on time and since they had already used UE4 for Remake, they were already used to this game engine.
Fingers crossed that the last episode of this trilogy will be developed with UE5🤞.
oh no! game with beautiful girls! this is so unrealistic!!! XD
So wave race on the n64 from donkeys years ago has much better water simulation. Got it. Also the performance mode looks like garbage. Yea I think I’ll wait a year for this one.
12:15 Stop pulling punches. This looks horrible and unexcusable. It’s not “a bit”
I’m supper tempted to play it right now but will hold with hope for performance mode update or 40 FPS VRR mode addition
Playing FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH doesn’t feel like I’m playing a video game. It’s so technically feature-film level amazing, that it seems unfair for Digital Foundry to review it at all. It’s that good. That’s the highest praise one could possibly give it.
Imagine playing at 30fps in 2024
Why do I as a pc owner do i have to wait for the proper version. Consoles are holding gaming back
This is a last gen game terribly optimized and put on current gen console.
Great Tech Review as always. One Small Request if I may, I would really appreciate it if you could incorporate audio more into the reviews again. Especially since the PS5 updated to use Dolby Atmos. In FF16’s Case it feels a lot like the Dolby Atmos Implementation is weird and lackluster or even downright buggy and it feels like FF7 Rebirth follows the same fate on my short test yesterday and I would like a professional opinion from you!
I wonder if its so blurry because it was going to be on ps4 at one point? It doesn’t actuality bother me tho. But im sure fans would welcome a ps5 Pro patch if the ps5 Pro is a thing.
wating for the pc version
Looks like FSR with the ghosting but I am wrong
At this rate , FF7 part 3 will look like a PS1 era game
😓 No thanks! I’ll wait for the PS5 Pro. To all the Pro console / mid-gen refresh haters, remember you don’t have to buy the PS5 Pro! If this type of quality is acceptable to you, enjoy…
No 40 fps mode, no upscaling, ghosting, low textures?
Let’s hope the eventual PC release will improve on most of these lighting and shadow issues.
It could look gorgeous… on a computer 🙂
“Near CGI level”
Game looks just pathetic at times. What a disappointment.
I’ll be honest, I’ve been so hyped for this game and I love Remake, and so far Rebirth is good as a game, but the visuals are so distracting to me so far. Graphics mode at 30FPS just gives me a headache, and performance modes textures are just a muddy mess. Maybe I’m too spoiled from playing max settings for games on my PC all the time including Remake and Reunion and recently RDR2 with its open world. I had to start playing on the TV because it was near unplayable so I went to a 1440 32 in monitor but that isnt great either so going to try my 1440 27in and hopefully that is better
I actually think the original models looks better, more realistic is not always better looking.
But yeah I like it being more open ended this time.
worst shit always😄
I didn’t bought PS5 and 4K TV for playing 30 FPS, FFS. That stupid quality mode in both FF16 and FF7 RB, is make me feel sick every time I play.
16 had horrible environment textures in graphics mode. Olivier is definitely blind
Performance mode is just too blurry
it more realistic but the hyperrealistic look of intergrade looks better to me
This is the same hardware that runs stuff like jedi survivor… forbidden west at 60 …. someone tell the devs its 2024…. same happened with 16 the jokers
I’ve been playing for like 8 hours and once your eyes adjust to the performance mode it looks completely fine
Unreal Engine saves another game.
I’ll wait until they patch performance mode.
The collision with bushes, branches & so on has no effect, really annoyed me.
Hey digital foundry have you ever noticed in new farcry 3 classic edition PS5 version grass shadow is missing rather than on xbox series x just like gta 5 car shadow have you guys noticed that or not but it is missing on PS5 version
unreal engine 4 has never really been great with big open areas they should of switched to unreal 5 but suppose its cheaper for them to just cut copy n paste assets and use same code
As someone who still uses a 1080p monitor, and is putting off playing some titles till I have a 1440p, I’m actually thankful for my predicament lol. When I get round to playing Rebirth, I expect performance mode will look relatively okay on my 1080p monitor.
It seems like they made a lot of compromises to get it to run smoother on the PS5. It will be interesting to see the PC version when it gets released (or a PS5 pro/6 version)
14:50 they “solved” the problem by making the game running at 720p and adding TAA with FSR. blurry mess
Graphic mode the Zac 1st battle is lag😢
Wondering if there’s gonna be an intergrade-style version in a year or so. I think I may just wait for the PC version…
Game looks like shit on performance. Very disappointed
I didnt like the first remake..and im a hardcore ff7 fan..been playing since 1990 when ff 1 came out
“Rebirth’s cut scenes are some of the most visually captivating sequences I’ve seen to date…” Amusing timing following the cut scene that just showed off Tifa’s massive jugs.
Probably going to be a mess of a PC port too, just like the first game. But I’d still prefer brute forcing it with high end hardware than playing this PS5 version… wish it came out on PC, bad port be damned.
This guy is sooo dry to listen to. Seriously needs a girlfriend.
Thanks for the review. I’m wondering if they can use FF16 in-house engine for the third part.
They haven’t learned anything since FF16. That game still looks blurry AF, terrible fps in both modes to this day. I don’t expect much will improve with this game’s performance either. SE is showing their ass as a studio not able to get with the times and provide a truly premium performance experience like other Sony blockbusters GOW or HFW. If those games can pull off smooth performances with top tier graphical fidelity I don’t understand why SE can’t. It’s a shame, but I’ll pick this up when it hits bargain bin status.
No foliage movement when passing thru is such game mode off idk 🤷🏻♂️ not saying I won’t play it but I hope they add the feature make little realistic
Guess if we want a truly polished experience we gotta wait for New FF7 Rebirth Intergrade Featuring Dante From The Devil May Cry Series XL & Knuckles on the PS6…
Camera Motion blur needs to be added as optional toggle. Graphics mode at 4K 30fps without camera motion blur is making me extremely dizzy to the point it’s becoming an accessibility issue.
Started the game not too long ago. Currently at Nibelheim and decided to put the game down for now. Already tagged Square/VII socials about this.
And before anyone suggests Performance mode, it’s not my ideal way of playing, especially when the fidelity reduction is too noticeable on my large display. Please be respectful of my comment as people have already insulted me just because of my preference. I respect others, otherwise.
This game needs to release on PC with every RT tech under the sun. This game is hungry as hell for them.
Hopefully the PC version doesn’t take forever to arrive.
Oliver: Talking about visual strengths from the changes of characters from Intergrade to Rebirth
Me: Hmm yess very nice
2:36 pops up
Me: VERY NICE
I will use performance mode. Its good enough. Devs just have to design for 60fps first and platforms should enforce it at this point.
trying to enjoy the game the best i can, i love FF7 but it runs so poorly on PS5. why couldnt they just release on PC. its such a shame
Is the ps5 underpowered or is square just outright bad at optimizing?
“graphics dont matter” and “we want 60 fps no matter the sacrifice”.
well im not really surprised people are complaining because the game had to sacrifice visual fidelity to achieve the fps.
They better not mess Tifa up for “modern audiences”
I’m a huge FF7 fan, and I loved remake, but Rebirth is unplayable to me. 🙁
I saw this blurry image in the demo and was told again and again it’s a pre build. Clearly that was a lie. It’s incredibly frustrating, given this is my Fav game of all time. Never mind.
Dear game devs,
Please stop using TAA it is literally garbage. Do you not have eyes?
I think it’s the most telling that John isn’t doing this when he usually does all the FF games—just knew at first glance it’s an UE mess and let Oliver do it (who’s great at it also)
Looks amazing in spots looks worse than the last sometimes
This game looks so awful it’s unacceptable. The audio mix is also pretty terrible. This generation feels lazy and cash grabby. 😔
Is anybody else getting signal drops when scenes change? It’s like it’s having to drop the input signal in order to render the beginning of a cutscene from gameplay. Any thoughts?
I have played an hour and 30 minutes of the game and it’s amazing, wish I could play more but it’s a work week the game is a must buy for any fan of the series.
1152p for 60fps LOL Yeah I’ll just wait to experience this native 4k 60fps like I have with the original on PC.
I’ll wait for p c version, but I hope they don’t make a shitty port
They Stayed faithful to the Original with pixelated graphics
As in FF16, big minus of FF7 rebirth – there is no option to turn off damage count.. Hate this counts in all games, but most games give you a option to turn off. Even FF15 you can turn off.
I know we’re literally watching DF doing a technical breakdown so of course most people here are that picky but man it’s incredible seeing so many people be so hateful towards the game and consoles because performance mode doesn’t look as well as it should be. It has to improve, but it’s also not that big of a deal as the game still looks amazing.
The problem with DF is that they only focus on the technical aspect of the game. I don’t really care about the broader scope of Rebirth. I just want a complete FFVII game to play, not this piecemeal releases.
fuck unreal engine
Game is held back due to being open world honestly, they could’ve taken that time to polish the game..like the original.
Tifa in a bikini, can’t click buy fast enough!
People saying we need a PS5 Pro to fix this… no we just need a crap load of optimization patches
I don’t care. This game is a masterpiece
I want to play this but i want them to fix it first
🙁
I think they added ray tracing, causing the textures and overall game resolution to decrease. Ray tracing doesn’t seem to suit console platforms.
I’m still in chapter 1 and this game seems to run and look pretty bad.
Something is wrong with 30fps in this game. When you pan the camera everything disappears into a smear and the camera is choppy as hell.
Final Fantasy XVI looks better and more cohesive. I understand it’s more limited and linear in scope, but it’s actually a direction I prefer for FF.
Imagine if this is made on the newly improved Decima engine, it would be the best looking game of 2024.
I will no longer get hyped with new hardware developers just don’t know how to use it. Super Sampling on PS4 Pro looks miles better then what they use now
Does anyone know the renderer
Remake graphics looks alot sharper
I’ll do the same with Remake, wait for the eventual PC version.
This game is absolutely horrendous, just from the demo the combat is the worst I have ever seen in a game, enemies are all broken and have super armor, while the player character can be stunlocked by every single attack, enemies will CONSTANTLY do off screen attacks and nothing is telegraphed right. This game has EVERYTHING I despise in action games. The original is 10000000x better than this slop. Its like square enix doubled down on everything that make the combat garbage in the first part. Whoever made this game should be ashamed.
The PS3 textures are unforgivable
FF16 DLC in April can’t come soon enough
The fact that arkham knight on ps4 looks better and sharper is not good.
I feel like modern graphics are getting very ‘missing the forest for the trees.’ Super crazy amounts of tiny details, but overall readability, clarity, draw distance, etc. are clearly suffering.
I just with they let us play the game locked in native 1080p without any of this shit upscaling.
4:30 Yikes! What’s up with that ghosting behind the Segway??
Omg Tifa is so busty 😍
“There’s a lot of nice incidental details in Rebirth’s open world segments” he says, as a deer disappears into the wind before his eyes.
This game has not aged well.
Waiting for Steam version to play at 1440p 120fps like FF7R.
With the PC version of remake I found that I needed at least 90fps after I have turned up the camera sensitivity for it to not look laggy (I leave my frame cap at 120). IDK why the devs always aim for either (30fps)4k or performance. An option for balanced graphics(1440p) while targeting a higher framerate would be a much better experience.
Can’t wait for the PC version cause mods will right all the wrongs
Some of the lighting straight up looks like ps3 era 😂
40% ???? Bruh that shit is spoiler modes Jfc.
I love the game so far, while the lighting and the shadows I probably couldn’t care less. But my god, the Textures, the Resolution in performance and the Ghosting are fucking insanely awful.
Like I’m playing on resolution mode and still have probably the worst ghosting I have ever seen on a game and it’s really distracting.
Think I’ll wait and see if Square makes a patch. Performance mode looks too blurry to me atm.
Making water worse than fallout new vegas in 2024 is a offense to computer graphics at this point
Betting they have PS5 Pro in mind that solves lighting, shadow, reflection, and framerate.
Somehow this game makes me dizzy like none other..
Good god that capcom didn’t make RE2: 2 – Claire Campaign or RE4: 2 – The Castle, they just release the full game at once
Something about Oliver’s voice is incredibly calming, his whole vibe in general brings chill lol
Playing at 30 fps is absolutely awful, so it’s a big no, and the performance mode can’t hold 60 fps. Hard pass.
man i was trying to finish remake on pc for the first time before rebirth came out and holy hell its dissapointing how blurry rebirth looks. i wasnt expecting 4k 120 fps like pc but sheehs the imagine quality/ motion clarity honestly looks kinda bad to me outside of the cutscenes
Please put icon/symbols on materia next installment so you can identify any materia at a glance when in the menu.
Eg, lightning symbol on lightning materia.
This will make for easier, faster materia management and equipping.
How come a game like horizon Fw looks so much detailed with high fidelity textures , detailed shadows realistic facial expressions. Whereas this game… still far from horizon or some other games
I went to Ps5 version of Witcher 3 because I thought I was having trouble with my eyes…. Witcher 3 obtains a much better and clearer image targeting 60fps. I’ll be back to ff7 rebirth when they fix this stuff. So disappointed
Is it possible that in a years time they’ll release a “definitive” edition with a DLC that come with “improved graphics and performance” on the ps5??? This is probably more conspiracy than guess but I wouldn’t be surprised:(
Correct solution: Buy PS5 pro
I really find the camera judder in quality mode to be an absolute deal breaker. Think I’ll just suck up performance modes blurry visuals
2:36 Thank you DF 😘
Longer this generation goes on, the less impressive games have become in image quality. You want 60 FPS, low resolution, low effects, blurry visuals. You want pretty graphics? 30 FPS (High resolution 30 is my preferred choice over 60 low resolution) at either 1440P (Won’t buy) or 4K.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the PS5 version was deliberately nerfed to make the inevitable Pro version more appealing later this year for another spate of sales for those upgrading
Who else is going to wait for the FF7 Rebirth Remastered version for PS5 Pro later this year for $70?
Sony for the Payer’s !!😂😂😂
That FF16 comparison really highlights how inconsistent and downright poor the visuals in this game are. And I initially didn’t even think FF16 was a “great” looking game.
trash
you are not distracted by tifas booooobs? no? not like stellar blade?
Did you guys remember to take your Polygonal this morning?
I bet Alex had some hate for how beautiful Tifa is!
He hates seeing beautiful women in games. It’s hilarious.
Shame how the character art in this game is league above its contemporaries but the environment art looks substantially worse than a student’s demo reel project.
it’s sad that they didn’t try to upgrade to UE5. I feel like the new technologies could have helped with many of the downfalls we currently see here. I understand that they might have heavily modified the engine and that’s why they can’t simply do that, but especially if you’re targeting PS5 and later maybe also higher end PCs this should be one of the first thoughts.
I’m kinda exhausted from japanese companies overly relying on the old trusty ways of doing things because they “still work good enough” instead of really pushing to get better results. There have been better looking games a long time ago and this is just coming out right now.
God I cannot wait. Shame that you just know the trilogy won’t finish on PS5. It will probably be a PS6 launch title…
wish they would have kept it turn based, or at least added the option to do so
Yet another game I won’t play until PS5 Pro.
As someone who just replayed FFVII Remake Intergrade this week in anticipation in performance mode, the visuals of Rebirth’s performance mode are so disappointing. I always play games in performance as I’m used to 60fps on my PC and most try for 1440p so they are still pretty sharp. And I don’t mind stepping down most the time of resolution a bit to get the frame rate. But on my 65” 4K OLED, the performance mode in Rebirth is on the verge of unplayable. The clarity is so bad in the open world sections. 1152p is so bad on a big high resolution TV. If it ran at 1440p like most, it’d be fine, but the resolution is too bad and distracting in Rebirth. I hope they can/do fix.
Whats the point of making the game exclusive to PS5 if they drop it looking like shit. I was so excited but when I put the gake in and started it I noticed it immediately. The Quality mode is unplayable on my OLED and the performance mode looks bad. Im going to try and enjoy the game but the fidelity issues are glaring.
I guess we wait until the FF7 Rebirth Intergrade edition that comes out for PC later that fixes most of this stuff. Lol Seeing how the end of May this timed exclusivity ends and may get announcement about it releasing for other platforms later. I’ll pass on getting the PS5 version then and let mine still be the useless paperweight that it is that I’ve played like 7 times in the past 3 years.
What about performance mode on a 1080p display, say a 24″ gaming monitor?
The original Remake looked fantastic when it came out, but after playing Cyberpunk with path tracing recently, I’ve become too spoiled. The character models look great, but it’s hard to be impressed with these environments and their old lighting tech.
how is it possible the remake intergrade has better graphics?? i never noticed anything when i played the remake but with this i constantly ask myself is this really a 70 dollar game??
Yet another PS4-looking PS5 EXCLUSIVE game!
4 YEARS into this gen, people!
Could they have lowered things to keep load times and asset streaming low?
Here’s hoping the PC release has GI and shadow improvements/options
Great thoughts and great video. However, I think the comparison to FF16 is a bit unfair. FF16 had better lighting and traversal animation, but it was a wildly inconsistent game when it came to the quality of the assets and animation. So far, Rebirth is a more consistent visual package IMHO.
I’m convinced that FF16 is just in a league of its own. (And no, it’s nothing like DMC. Just heavily misunderstood, and overhated. Very Underrated hidden Gem.)
Im playing on a 1080p tv no hdr, you think the performance mode issues would be noticed? Im willing too bet DF does no testing at 1080p but 4k only.
Oof. This looks like a solidly last-gen game that was rushed. FF 16 looks way better. I have a hard time accepting that this is the caring remake of a beloved game. Kinda tarnishes it for me. Quite disappointing.
I think FF7 remake was the best looking game ever. I played it on PC at 4k/120fps. I’m waiting for the PC version of this game, rebirth, to fix all issues. RTX 5080 + FF7 Rebirth.
Looks like I’m waiting for th pc version lol.
Digital Foundry round-up…
You can choose either Choppy mode or Blurry Mode 😂😂
the shadows, non moving foliage and dogshit textures are unforgivable at this point. especially for a AAA open world game for these days. and my god those jumping animations are sickening, which i noticed from the very first time jumping was revealed, I said to myself, “oh that will be fixed for release” LOL not a chance.
Not getting my money until the pc version “and all of these problems fixed” at this point.
But i’m 100 percent certain they will release this version for pc too and double dip for an Intergrade version for ps5 PRO, then release the Intergrade version again for PC.
the fact the foliage was already moving and taken out, makes me believe a lot of this downgrade is on purpose to make the Intergrade version worth it’s money when it hits. don’t fool yourself into thinking this was taken out to improve performance. Almost Every game has this feature. I’ve made foliage move my self in Ue4 and Ue5 and it takes very little time to implement.
If Dev’s just focused on a single 60fps graphics setting & optimize for that; instead of creating 2, 3 or more different settings. We would end up with a single well optimized experience . The extra time focusing on the 60fps mode could pull it much closer to the quality of what the 30fps mode provides. Instead we get crap x2. Seems like a poor choice of engine for the task as well.
Squenix have a hard time putting out any manner of consistent quality. Must need a few more decades of practice.
I have played a ton of these types of games with poor performance modes in the past few years. I’m getting tired of it. I may just become a PC gamer so I don’t have to worry about it most of the time.
Yeah nah…I’m not seeing an improvement from FF7 Remake tbh.
I’ll be skipping this til it either comes to PC or the PS5 Pro with no compromise on visuals or performance
the lighting is atrocious, performance mode is a disaster 😢 will wait for a patch
Hurts to say it but this game makes me realise how much I want a PS5 PRO.
To fix performance mode; for anyone with an OLED that has an “AI Clarity” feature like Sony’s “Reality Creation” on Bravia TV’s. Crank that up to 100 & the sharpness nearly all the way down. It clears up the bluriness extremely well without oversharpening the picture.
I normally love DF content, but with everything going on within the gaming industry, is this really what we are going to worry about.
We have known for years that the complexity of making these games have increased tenfold, so have the budgets. Personally I feel we need to stop putting the emphasis on graphics and crucifying developers for not using the “cutting” edge technologies adding to the complexity and cost of development .
I think it’s pathetic that when people are losing their jobs, we are more worried about graphics, than the story and gameplay that have been provided.
First and foremost no games are perfect no matter what company it’s coming from Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft so please Quit your crying about it and in joy it some gamers wish they could play it but everyone’s lives are different because one day all the stuff you like to in joy will be taken away from you it’s called life and things happens to all of us
I have already noticed and that more than once, your tests and claims have absolutely nothing to do with the truth! How did you configure the PS5 and what TV are you using? Me LG C1 from 2022, VRR on, 59/60fps always, peoformace or graphics, and perforamceje cleaner, faster and better picture, all the opposite of what you claim there.. Do you have a Tv of 120Hz and HDMI2.1? I have a feeling not.. because this video is full of inaccuracies if you have a properly tuned console and a good TV, and I’m no fanboy, facts. I’ve read similar claims on certain groups, not olny for this game, and then we would discover that this people have unsuitable (old) TVs.. This video is not professional
It’s wild that Sony doesn’t have this game available on PC day 1. Do they not like money?
Seems to streamline development they just made a continuation of the PS4 version. They made the improvements to PS5 like they did with Intergrade but the baseline is still PS4. Tbh, for FF7, I don’t care lol. The character models look great and the overall scenery is beautiful. I could nit pick textures in the environments all day but then I’d be missing one of the best games of the year.
Hope it releases on pc in the future to see it’s real visual potential.
They should have consulted with Guerrilla games because Horizon Forbidden West is the best open world game I’ve ever seen.
After waiting all this time, sad to see this game look so damn blurry.
This generation is a shambles, which area you want the console to slack off on performance or graphics pick your poison
a scam to force us buying the ps5 pro
This further solidifies the PS5 as a low end console in 2024. It’s also slower than a 4060.
FFXVI’s lighting is far superior. One of my gripes with FFXVI and FFVII Rebirth is that despite all your powerful attacks and swinging… foliage does not react at all.
Yeah, a PS5 Pro is needed.
Is Linneman still around at Digital Foundry?
Ff16 does look stunning aside from being stuck on 30fps. I truly do not like having 30fps.
Idk tifa kinda from a bygone era
It looks like a PS4 Game. Waiting for the PC release lmao.
I’ll wait til the PC release is out. It’s too jarring dropping down to PS5 tier software when you’re used to an RTX4080 and 4K 120Fps
One of those rare cases where the game needs a remaster right on launch.
But the game is amazing, so I am still having a blast.
Oliver, I love you, but I freaked out and stopped the video right after you said “first 40%”. I reckon i’ll just listen to this one. LoL I can hardly wait to get home and dive in.
I’ll wait for it on PC tbh.
So just wait until they release all three games in some remastered graphics of that future time. Unbelievable that people allow themselves to be milked like this. Years between episodic releases on multiple consoles and multiple differences between each one. No thank you. And this comes from someone who grew up and loved the original game. This is all so unnecessary
Downgrade fantasy, for 70 bucks? No thanks, bro.
Why didn’t SE use unreal engine 5? Why are they still using 4?
This is how I felt about the demo. Including the part about FFXVI looking better. I had forgotten that the remake was usung unreal4. Still gonna pick it up later. I’m hoping Sqenix gives it a bit more love and considers switching engines for the final game.
Sometimes a new release like this is a bit annoying that it doesn’t come to PC on day one as well… Then I see all the compromises needed in order to work on consoles and it makes me more than happy to wait for a enhanced PC port with higher res assets, better shadows etc on PC even if it’s a year later.
you guys experience disc error??? looks like mine misprinted
PS5 = PS4 Pro Plus
Generally speaking I think the game looks great in 30fps besides the flaws.
cant wait for the pc version
Man this game LOOKS amazing, but that’s what I thought about the 1st one and that one was a GIANT let down.
Game simply looks awful.
Set native to 1080p then play performance and it looks sharp!
Gonna wait for the PC release cuz this looks like ASS. Square it’s incapable of optimizing their games for consoles
There are a lot of areas that go from pitch black to very bright purelt based on camera angle. For example when you entet the reactor for thr first time, its pitch black then goes very bright depending on camera position/location.
They just need to add a 40 FPS VRR mode.
A question comes to mind: Why didn’t they implement the outdoor shadow tech from Red Dead 2. It has perfect contact-hardening shadows, in last gen console, without raytracing.
Lack of proper GI and FSR is a bummer too, hope they improve them later.
Great that there’s less reliance on background art than in the remake. I don’t understand why they didn’t map the backgrounds to very simple geometry in the first one, it should have 0 impact on performance. It looked rather bad when towers of sector 7 didn’t connect with the roof.
yeah i’m gonna wait for PC.
Boy i play at 720p just tell me about the game.
The ghosting on that Segway hurts my eyes
I can’t play this game in graphics mode. Yea it looks better but it feels like it plays in 15 fps.
It might be a too late, but im skipping this gen..
I would rather play the original complete story with elderly graphics than wait 12 or 16 years to play a full game that isn’t faithful to the original.
I don’t understand how this looks many degrees worse than Intergrade on PS5… This definitely could have used some more time for polish.
This is probably the PS4 version before they decide not to release it on on ps4 to push the PS5 sells. Hopefully the PS5 next gen patch come soon 😅
This generation is really grappling with the end of Moore’s law like a Walmart greeter and a shoplifter.
Im so glad u praised ff16. I love that game.
The shadows cast by the sun are indeed very low res but during the mine section the headlamps on the ceiling actually do cast a very high res shadow i hope people will keep complaining but the problem is that the game itself is quite good elsewhere
“Barret’s climbing animations seem implausible” while Red XIII is just jumping around in the background lmao.
I have seen sharper switch games than this performance mode.
Sucks that we have to take a image quality downgrade in a sequel.
I almost always play in performance mode, but damn. That performance mode does not look good at all.
Average blurry shit from current gen 🤡
Both modes look blurry and full of ghosting, make the game again
Having no unlocked 40hz minimum mode for high refresh VRR displays truly sucks here. I feel like this is one of the games that would reallty benefit from it from a playability perspective.
we know the solution to all the graphic issues, PC!!
I’ve said it for a long time now. Visually 16 looks so much better and polished. People over at reddit are fanboy coping when they disagree.
I beat Reunion just minutes before launch and almost preferred it graphically. Performance mode is like looking through foggy glasses.
I’ll just wait to play this on my Series X. Xbox just got FF 14 online and its very fun. I’ll get A PS5 someday
Buying it anyway a true ff fan will . Most expensive edition in fact just cause of this video i will buy 3 . Also im getting 3 copies of steller blade and all my freinds are gonna buy the game too .
As someone who is struggling to finish 16 due to (amongst other gripes) the huge delta in Graphics and Performance modes, this isn’t boding well either. Please can we have a sweet-spot between the two – like a 1440p/60 mode?
the ps5 is a joke
The difference between performance & fidelity mode is truly staggering. I’ve never played a game before where I thought performance looked bad. Rebirth looks horrendous HORRENDOUS on performance!!
If you pick up the game just know you will be playing at 30 fps. What a let down 😔
This game needs motion blur badly. The graphics mode looks 10x better than performance mode, but gives me motion sickness unlike any game I’ve ever played
The fact the PS5 struggles to hit 30fps on “graphic” modes is laughable. They brag about 8k on the box but struggle to do 4k. 60fps performance mode looks awful and this title is just another example of the ps5’s underwhelming performance. I saw a ridiculous amount of texture load in on their “ultra fast” SSD. Guess we still haven’t figured out how to utilize 7gbps in games yet 🤷 if you’re fine with this don’t let me shit on your parade this is extremely playable and you can definitely have a good time. But coming from a PC gamer perspective current Gen consoles are just disappointing. Unless we’re talking about the series s but that thing is just nice because of the price. It does not perform great on new games at all 😂
Guys. Try using the TVs sharpener. I turned it all the way up on my C3 in game mode. Works wonders. Subjectively at least.
What background music do you play at 14:34? Is it from the game itself?
Playing the demo and seeing the final version, the strangest thing to me is how the assets in outdoor natural terrain do not gel whatsoever. Grass and rocks look very out of place and assets placed right next to each other look like they’re from different games. Gives a very amateur look to natural terrain and makes me think they just grabbed foliage packs from the UE4 market place, doubt they did but looks like it.
Great video even better adbloced on my OLED
I’m so tired of console games having the choice between poor frame rate and unsharp presentation. Can the devs just balance the graphics too a point where we can have a sharp image with an acceptable framerate? I’d rather have less fidelity if it means the game runs good and has a sharp presentation..
this game is not ready, passing on this until its fixed
Oof‼️
Glad to have my shock at the graphics validated lol
Tenten
Terrible looking performance mode.
Worst I’ve seen in a long time!
money money sack and ps4 ue4 30fps is fine again lol
The graphics here is just lazy for a big studio and ps5
That’s true… And sad
I’ll wait for Xbox version of this game after all the episodes are done
Fix the fucking performance mode or refund.
now hurry up and bring it to PC
Performance mode looks like Series Sbm game.
For some reason putting the PS5 in 1440p and playing in performance looks way better than 4K in performance.
Its a real shame to see this game on unreal 4. It just has that tired ue4 look.
Wow janky.
Why does FFXV look better than this?
This is nitpicking. Playing Rebirth on a 65 inch xX950H Sony Bravia TV is stunning!
Really great tech summary, Oliver! You maybe downplayed how high expectations are for the FF7 graphics to be top bar, especially for a current-gen only release. Missed opportunity in that light!
PS releases are the beta version, PC = final version
This game can look like It was made for Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PS5 Pro at the same time.
Watching this while I have the game. I can’t wait to play 😆
This game doesn‘t even use the full potential of the Ps5… back in 2020 when the remake came out on Ps4 it looked fine even on performance mode, but here the textures hurt my eyes..
Yeah. It’s a piece of shit.
Alright wow! I did not think there would be so many people picking at the games visuals of all things. For one, this game isn’t real life it doesn’t need to be either. The game has a full attention story and some of the best combat which although built on the last game fixes some of it, such as air combat, which was pretty awful if you didn’t have Barret or Aerith in the party, they made a whole system around character interaction and how your combat affects the relationships of cloud and his party members, the visuals of characters which are the highlight of the game since the PlayStation 1 have been upgraded with tons of detail. Materia, weapons, and upgrading has been done very well, and the open world has been made into a seamless place to place open world. Everybody asks way too much when it comes to visuals. I grew up with this game, and even the fact they are actually remaking these games so kids nowadays who didn’t grow up with the original can play it should be enough. Go back and play the original game on PS1 and tell me the graphics are worse than that game I dare you
This game makes me really wish we had a PS5 pro or a PC release.
The 60fps mode verges on unacceptably soft on a 4k monitor up close, and I can definitely notice the lack of motion blur in the 30fps mode.
Getting a patch for motion blur on 30fps should be possible, if not a sharper resolve for the 60fps mode.
1080p in no way looks THAT blurry. The hell is that
Chronogically Remake is before rebirth right?!
2:37 GOTY material right here, those textures and geometry are 69k/420fps level worthy at least.
Stop asking for motion blur DF! Motion blur never, ever, makes a game look better. Keep that shit away.
Some of that texture work and lighting is making my eyes bleed! :S
The game feels unfinished, but squarenix shareholders demanded the release to be part of 2023 fiscal year, screw the players at least the greedy old men will have decent money to buy their luxury items.
So far both digital foundry and ign are tip toeing around just telling it like it is. Low res texture wtf’s, bad screen space reflection application, terrible shadows, cheap performance mode implementation, and overall worse quality than Intergrade. It’s a reach to spin this otherwise.
6:50 just standing there letting Aerith struggle.
Wonder if pc version will be better.
I knew I wasn’t smoking something when my first impressions of the visuals were ” why does this look worse than XVI , and why does it sorta look worse than remake which is last gen?” . Xvi looks so much better and this explains why, and explains why this looks overall better than remake but can look worse here and there. I think they started development right after remake and stuck with unreal. Still a gorgeous game, but xvi looks much better and smoother which the motion blur . Even performance mode on xvi looks better. Shake cause I prefer 60fps, but I want this game to look good so I’m going with graphics mode. I hope they put in the motion blur soon
Xbox is dead
A DF video that is careful about spoilers… I’m shocked.
Justs started this morning. Is it me or is the town Kalm like bright as fuck? Cant put my finger in it as im not a tech guy but everything looks washed out.
So in another word, we got a downgrade from Remake……. Damn SEnix……
I really don’t understand what the thinking was behind using UE4 when UE5 has been out for 4 years….
I really hope they will make a UE5 Port after all 3 titles have been released. Lumen and Nanite could solve those graphical issues. Perhaps PS 5 Pro and PS 6 are able to use FSR 3 + Frame Gen.
Been seeing a lot of big name games lately just absolutely fail at the lighting. Sucks to see
The joys of unreal engine 4…..in 2024.
Having said that the game is Stellar and does not detract from it.
Rebirth is by far better. It makes Remake look like a tech demo lol
Seems like that Rebirth pushed beyond the PS5 limits, and SE had to make concessions graphically and dial back things to hit the 30fps and 60fps targets. Compared to Remake, I see way more geometry in Rebirth. For bleeding edge graphics diehards, the PS5 Pro (or PC Ports) can’t arrive soon enough.
One of those games I think I’ll play in quality mode.
Bring this game to pc.
We’ll fix it
They should have used UE5 if they wanted to do a lot of geometry. Even FF16 looks much better in performance mode.
Fingers crossed they work on some of these issues in the months to come.
Even without watching this, performance mode is terrible. Looks like you’re playing on a switch.
honestly I prefer the result of the simple upscale of the performance mode than the mess FSR2 produces
All this guy talks about are shadows. I thought this was a review on the game? I take it Square snubbed him in some way and this is his bitter comeback? Because everything looks awesome from the video clips…even though he never talked much about the gameplay.
So should I be playing on performance or graphics mode?
I’ve only played the demo and decided to wait a few more months. Yet another unrefined game, surely they’ll patch it up but QC is quite bad in this one. Performance mode looks even worse 👎🏻
I’m still gonna pick up this game. I love ff7 remake and I will be enjoying this one as well. I don’t care if it has some visual issues. It still going to be a great game with a great story, great rpg combat, and full of fun mini games. They will probably make patches for the game in future. And hopefully part 3 will use unreal 5. But I’m still gonna have fun because ff7 remake was my first ever ff game. 😊
Is there no motion blur at all in the 30fps mode? It feels so stuttery to me. FF XVI felt great in comparison.
Mid lol
In this video the focus is on performance mode being underwhelming and I’m going to drop a possibly hot take.
This entire console generation is underwhelming. I can’t think of any other generation where the phrase “Concessions had to be made” being common place within the first year of a generation starting. Is it just me?
10:18 WOW that is bluuuury
All us true original ff fans just ever wanted one thing…. Turn base game play just like the old games but with new graphics….. Its why i hate this dam company and then they take ff7 and make it into 3 different games……
Give us a PC version with full RT !!
Well I’m stuck with this gimped version for another two years, at least.
Guess the pc version is coming soon boys, things like foliage collision seen in early trailers were probably from the pc version.
The Remake looks better! The stylised characters really pop. The new one is a weird quasi-realistic spaghetti of an approach.
Time out! Did that Tiger soldier just make a Michael Jackson reference???
Foliage collision is actually really important, at least to me. It gave a much better experience when I played TLOU 2 compared to the experience I had with Alan Wake 2 with its nonexistent foliage mechanics
Anybody else growing increasingly resentful toward developers/publishers for platform exclusivity?
What a disappointing downgrade from remake. this game needs the forbidden West treatment. VRR minimum
Who tf calls monitors ‘sets’?
I hope a mod can darken clouds eyebrows..
8:40 much easier than an animal with no hands right next to him
I’m sorry cloud looks so much cuter in remake.. the eyebrows in rebirth are too light he looks ike he has a caveman brow…
Japan just isn’t good at optimization. How many games do they have to release for people to realize that?
Could have made clouds eyebrows darker like in remake 🙁
they should just call the Performance mode “Pixel-Art Mode”
I can see how much detail is being lost in performance mode on my cell phone. Not good.
The fizzling shadow edges and foliage pop in are super distracting to me…I hope we get a good pc port within a few years
At this point, I guess FF games are just meant to be played at 30fps. Our most recent before this game, FF16, also had a terrible performance mode. The frame rate was the larger issue then rather than the blurry visuals, but either way it means I will be playing both of these games at 30 frames. What a shame.
Please do a PS4 port I don’t care if the graphics are downgraded with slow framerates
Crap, I really wanted to get this now.
I could do with a good 30fps, but 80 euros for this shadows, low res texture and glowing skin..No, just no.
I am in complete shock of where PS5 is, as I thought the performance jump will be small so this will stay for 10 years, but it seems Pro is just needed to get 4k 60fps, how is a console im it’s mid life stages struggling this bad, and still has not many first party games
Wish i’d not spent £70 on this BUSYWORK simulator! 😫
Marginally improved character models aside, they somehow managed to make it look worse than the ps4 game, I’m impressed
I can forgive low rez shadows but the traversal animations and environmental textures? Dev skill issue confirmed.
SE should hire the water artists from Ubisoft.
With games like Red Dead redemption 2 that released 6 years ago there are zero excuses in 2024.
Square forgot that ambient occlusion exist. Nextgen devs really forgot the art of baked lightning, simple but efficient AO, simple cubemap reflections on large body of water, and dynamic shadows. Those super poor shadows and lack of shadow casting lights makes you forget Unreal is even using deffered rendering. Honestly sometimes it feels like going back to oldgen style of rendering and focusing on more poly, and higher final picture quality would lead to better looking games overall.
Lighting is such a bummer in this game. Even in the menu system when your characters are being displayed the lighting looks off. The water is even more of a bummer imo. Not even ripple textures in the water or foam. Like that’s some early PS2 era type ish right there.
It is a half of current gen life term and we haven’t really seen a next gen game yet, except Demon’s souls, probably. It is really sad
Japanese developers are just bad at optimising and graphics, they still live in the ps2 era
The next AAA performance mode with a 💩 quality. Ps5 exlusives are not what i expected. FF16 was unplayable in performance mode. Waiting for a patch. No patch no money. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
We got them ps3 rocks 😂😂😂😂😂
Major downgrade, The PC version will be fixed by modders. Worth waiting.
I’m gonna say it I. I think digital foundry is very bad for gaming as a whole. I play ff7 rebirth and I’m thinking this is some of the best graphics I’ve seen. You all nitpick every little technical detail that the average player does not notice nor care about. I agree it can be interesting but it has lead to gamers that care more about dropped frames than enjoying a game and devs who care more about lighting than mechanical complexity. I guess it is knowledge that the masses don’t need to know.
Western devs are lightyears ahead of Japanese devs when it comes to graphics and fidelity
4:30 holy ghosting
I believe this started as a PS4 game, none of the comparisons convince anything that it’s current gen only. I don’t see what’s special
No matter what you can say abou the graphics, their character design is unmatched.
Looks trash compared to the first one
So better wait another 2months to play this.
I won’t be playing this on a 4k display, should I do performance mode, or is it still too blurry?
I feel like this guy really had a lot of personal gripes for this game that he carried into his review and none of these issues are as prominent as he claims and his random tidbit about the mini games at the end was just weird.
Incoming remake fanboys
I wish PS5 Games would give me the option to render at 1440p. I think a graphics mode with native 1440p could reach solid 60 FPS. I don’t need 4k when I only have a 1440p screen
I could not resist and bought it on PS5, OMG I’m torn dunno which mode to choose. 30 fps is janky as hell and 60 fps is blurry as hell. I found that running at 60, the graphics remind me that old PS1 / PS2 final fantasy era, it’s kinda charming. But reverting to 4k makes the game looks so crisp it’s really hard to choose … 🥲 At least on PC later on we will have the 4k quality @60.
Looks like a 720p Nintendo Switch game at times.
I have no idea what you are talking about. On my 4k 120hz tv I don’t see anything that you are talking about with the graphics on performance mode or graphics mode. Graphics mode runs at a solid 30 with none of the issue you highlighted at 4k and performance runs at 60fps (with some drops to 55fps). It does run at a solid 1440 though. I am not having the shadow issue you are having nor the texture issue. I am baffled on that. Now I do agree there are some areas where shadows need to be added. But I am always getting high res on the shadows that are there. I did the exact same thing at the exact same spot as you and it didn’t go in and out of focus. It stayed at high res. I have no idea what is going on with yours compared to mine. Might be cause my TV is automatically upscaling. But if that is the cause then it isn’t a software problem , but a hard ware problem. If you have the right TV (or monitor with an upscaler) then you are ok. Just my two cents.
*Aeris
Not touching it in its current state. Waste of a playthrough.
I was so hyped for this one but cant stand the graphics in performance mode, remake was Totally fine but rebirth ..no its totally NOT.
It seems like they built this for a ps5 pro that hasnt been announced yet or they are building it for the future pc launch and downgrading for ps5
FF7 Rebirth really looks like it needs RT Shadows, RTGI, and RT Reflections. UE4’s GTAO could also be a nice implementation would also be nice as well to help some of these scenes. Those would fix a lot of the visual issues on display here. Maybe the PC version can add in these later on but I won’t bet it happening
terrible
9:26 if that’s the “first trailer” then it was on PC. They probably had to turn it off to run on PS5
Yet somehow playstation fantwats think that Ps4 cross gen games are holding PS5 back but not the PS5 closed specs 😮😂yall funny to watch and also disturbing as well
So we’ve gone through:
1) You’re just sitting too close to your gaming monitor. Sit back!
2) The demo is just an old build from Summer Games Fest, the final game will be much improved!
3) There is a patch coming for the demo, see! Nothing to worry about.
4) There’s definitely an improvement in the launch day version over the patched demo. Maximillian Dodd says so and I can see it, too!
5) Ok, so it’s blurry in Performance, but this is an open world game, and Intergrade was all corridors, so of course there are huge compromises to make to image quality!
6) I was fine with 320×240 and 15fps back in 1997, so not complaining about this!
Anything but expect the developers to actually optimise their game and Sony, who paid to keep it off PC on launch, to supervise it properly.
Sony exclusivity tactics feel cringey.
When you put FF16 next to it Rebirth looks shockingly outdated.
Wow, PS5 is a turd. I’m shocked.
Ps4 games ported to Ps5 look better than exclusives to ps5
This game is just lazy.
I think I’ll just wait for the PC version whenever that comes out.
This game NEEDS a 40fps mode. I don’t mind the lighting issues much but the level of blurriness in the performance mode is simply unusable. 40fps mode would fix this while not being as laggy as 30fps mode.
What are the best PS5 / TV settings for someone with a 4K VRR like a C3?
Water is so luck luster man this is playstation 5???? Looks like the first game just a with a little bit of fine tuning here and there performance mode is absolutely not acceptable.
I wait for Rebirth Integrade, with additional fixes and content and a PC port that can be tweaked to my liking.
this game would’ve been perfect for showcasing UE5’s capabilities, what a shame
that image quality in performance mode is absolutely shameful, completely killed my hype for the game for now. Hopefully it doesn’t take too long to come to PC.
Thanks to Digital Virginry, AAA games cost 350 million to make, developers cant make their money back and PlaYStation has to lay off 10 to 20% of their workforce and shutter entire studios, just cuz Digital Virginry feels the need to zoom in with a microscope by 20x and go ‘textures not high res enough, motion blur not blurry enough, increase the shutter speed, increase the sample counts, more raytracing, more ambient occlusion, blablablablabla’, creating a graphical weapons arms race as to which AAA game dev can have the shiniest little graphics.
I’d say start at the head of the hydra, Unreal Engine and TIm Sweeney. Tim Sweeney is a dogshit coder and used car salesman that oversold devs on UE4 and UE4 is a dogshit engine. But of course you can’t say that because Epic Games is one of your financial benefactors, just like Microsoft. We haven’t forgotten when you guys were posing with phil Spencer and Todd Howard on camera a month before the Starfield release, and you did your damned best to cover up for that game’s awful graphics. I still remember all the cope trotted out by Alex and John ‘uhhh but guise it looks good when you’re inside a base, in open world it looks a bit less good’. LOL. More like looks a 360 game when outside, but ye Starfield needed defending at all costs cuz daddy Spencer was writing Digital Virginry’s cheques.
But when a Nintendo game comes out running like shit at 720p30 at dynamic res then all of a sudden it’s ‘masterful Nintendo getting the most out of the hardware’ LOL. Digital Virginry is killing this industry with this overemphasis on stupid graphical fidelity that frankly most gamers don’t care about and most don’t even notice unless pointed out to them by the Digital Virgins zooming into a screenshot with a microscope.
Games have started looking good enough since the PS4 era. It’s time to stop pursuing pointless graphical fidelity and focus more on actual content. Any other approach will kill this industry completely.
When I played the demo I was baffled at how blurry it looks in performance mode and I saw what looked like upscaling artifacts all over the place. They should have implemented fsr 2.1 or something similar because we have way better upscaling tech.
Hopefully they patch some of these problems out.
Thank you for not going into any story, character, or set piece specifics. I’ve gone on a total promotional material blackout, sans this video and the demo, and this was exactly as informative to listen to (I didn’t even watch) as I wanted it to be. Thank you for that discretion.
7:11 the reason for that is that Remake was made of much smaller environments. The shadow resolution is already dynamic, they are using cascading shadows, they are using UE there is no reason they wouldn’t. The thing is when you have a much larger environment you will have to compromise on the shadows resolution somewhere, even using cascading shadows, the shadow map is a texture and there is a limit a to the resolution of any texture that you can get in the GPU depending on the GPU model.
I play all my games at 4k 30fps anyway
That ghosting in the movement…also I think they were hitting some memory limits on the PS5 on the lighting and other effects and textures that look bad or low rez.
TL;DR: This game is uglier than the previous game, even of the PS4 game. So, no one wants to hear the truth, but here it is: PS5 is just a PS4 PRO with SSD.
This have nothing to do with the hardware. Look how AC Origins looks. A open world game too and this game is almost 7 years old and not even a ps5 exclusive game. This game is almost perfect. Lightning, textures, water etc. It’s just bad optimization.
Those changes are not what I call the next step of graphics on playstation 5 it’s so little diffrence between those 2 can’t really tell what is better
This game should have remained un-re-made to protect the beauty and the purity of the original masterpiece, contemporary minds are not capable of handling something of such importance, they should concern them selves with matters more trivial.
I HOPE WHEN THEY DO THE LAST ONE THEY WILL SELL all IN ONE PACK
All this shows is that the third game can finally move on from ue4 and adopt modern rendering techniques. Japanese developers are always behind in the aspect of using modern upscaling techniques with VRR options.
Was there on graphic update for the performance mode today? Because it looks much less blurry than in the Demo.
Thank you DF!
Absolutly no to such sword they designed in FF. Makes me vomit.
A little salty with that title DF 😂
LookingL
30fps is way more noticeable than the hit to graphics on performance mode
Waiting for the PS5 Pro upgrade
Disappointing that we couldn’t get UE5/Lumen for this game, it’s pretty much a buffed up PS4 game in 2024.
Super dissapointend that such am amazing and long awaited game looks soo poor on ps5. The performance mode is a blurry mess, hdr implementation is not so great, lightning is so dissapointing. I was expecting at least the same level as remake
Does it support VRR or a 40 fps mode?
I just finished Remake on PC and I absolutely adored it, I’m super excited to play Rebirth but having to go from a high resolution and framerate experience on PC to either choosing between 30fps or a blurry 50-60 fps experience is kind of a bummer. I really wish that Square would do multiplatform day and date releases for their major FF releases. I was also hoping that some of the terrible textures found in FF: Remake would have been addressed for FF: Rebirth but oh well, I will still play this at launch as I enjoyed Remake so much.
Hope they fix the details before I buy the game in 6-8 months on discount.
I’ll be double dipping with this game. I can’t wait to get home to play this on my ps5. Here’s hoping the pc port is not a long wait.
If you take a second to look at the props on any given shot, you can see OG Tomb Raider level of low detail. For a PS5 game in 2024, I fail to understand how that’s possible, especially given we have games that launched with the system that look and perform 10x better on the technical end.
He says “these upgrades” and straight away we see he used a shot of tifa in her brach clothes…I see what you were doing there.
I’m looking forward to the denuvo version review coming out in about three months 😂.. hopefully
This a remake, graphics are the most important part in my opinion. 4 years for “disk 2” and we still have these problems like poor textures, bad lighting, and bad perf mode?
This console generation is truly a travesty.
FF16 looked great but the game sucked, I will take FF7r any day
I’m a couple of hours in, the graphics in Nibelhelm look last gen in a lot of places.
Looks great. I will play it now and then do a second run when the PS5 Pro comes out.
I’m gonna wait for a patch.. Can’t believe it looks WORSE than Remake..😭
Damn bro, this game needs a PS5 Pro or a proper PC port.
Can’t wait for shadows to be patched-in on PS5 Pro and run smoothly on PS6. Should only take about 4 years.
Thanks for the great review! I want to know if forcing VRR in quality mode improves the refresh rate. I know VRR isn’t officially implemented in FF7 Rebirth but when forcing it on unsupported titles like Alan Wake 2 it worked really well on my Sony 120HZ 4K OLED. Cheers!
been waiting for this!
Waiting for the ps5 pro version lol
Very strange how they downgraded the lighting compared to the first remake
This is one of the few games out there with an iconic art design that is greater than the sum of its technical shortcomings.
their the same picture
it’s just funny to me that DF can’t point out one flaw of the game without fist saying how “great” the graphic is for multiple times, so pathetic.
Cloud stole Ichiban’s ride.
Another console trash😂😂
2:32 Cloud’s chest doesn’t quite fit the head
Thank you Olli!
4 years of development and a console generation leap, in the 2020s = some steps backwards and some steps forwards.
4 years development in 90s….sega Saturn (94) to Dreamcast (98).
We truly have hit diminishing returns
How is a ps5 game performance lack this much.,not having much issues with it but its not butterly smooth like games ratchet clank rift apart. I expected better performance but not too terrible though
But But ReMaKe LoOkS BeTtEr. lollll
So what you’re saying is, wait for PC. Gotcha.
Oh no. Here comes the crying about Tifa’s boobs.
This has to be the blurriest performance mode ive ever seen
Square Enix is having technical trouble with both FF16 and FF7 Rebirth. You’d imagine they would have known that they had to have a stable 60fps mode.
Will the PC version be better?
I look forward to the PC release so i can play it properly
Wish they would add a 40fps mode.
“Tifa’s model has been upgraded from a 10 to a 10.”
This is totally a case of an amazing video game that will stand above most, buttt with very high highs and very low lows. And until we get a pc version we won’t truly see how beautiful this game can truly be
arent Clouds eyebrows way to thin/light ?
is it the new lighting ?
i have no idea. it looks weird as hell
Ah, those female characters from a bygone era, they are rather off-putting aren’t they?
Those anaimations when traversing obstacles look really really off! The general Artstyle in the game is good, but i Hope a PC Version can deliver some better lighting and textures, officially or through mods.
Welcome to mid-range 2016 PC gaming.. PS5 is truly a toy for kids and tech illiterate dads
Same people whining here about the graphics are the same who jump onto the “Graphics dont matter” trains for other titles. Get over it and enjoy the game.
2:36 JESUS CHRIST.
Another Game hold back by the worst console-generation.
Really needed the power of XSX to do this game justice.
4:33 that ghosting is awful
ps5 weak as fuck need ps6
4:30 someone call ghost busters
What a downgrade tsk. Squeenix did raise the bar on this title in terms of rendering tech.
Definitely has me convinced to just wait till the pc release. Better fps and resolution plus a cheaper complete game is a no brainer for me.
12:15 a BIT of ghosting!?!
It looks absolutely atrocious!
It’s so frustrating that this series isn’t coming out on PC at the same time. It looks so much better on PC but it’s not the kind of game I want to play through twice
No water animations or deformations no buy for me😂
Damn, this is why I’m sick of hearing “thanks to the power of the PS5”. One of the biggest remake projects ever, console exclusive, almost no lighting.
Oh, and I’m also interested how it’ll run on PS5 Pro. If you can wait, guys — wait till the autumn this year when Pro is dropping. I’ll test the hell out if it, working at retail so I’m getting Pro around the launch date, my body (cash) is ready!
Im gonna say this. Enjoy the game for what it is. The game looks super good and runs perfect.
Leave the nitpicking to the YouTuber. Because that’s how they keep their business 💵
Censosred
Some of the lighting and texture issues are strange because FF16 (although a different dev house and engine of square) is also on PS5 and it looks absolutely amazing. It’s a huge night and day difference if you look at both games side by side in terms of lighting and texture detail. Both are great either way.
Except in cutscenes, the lighting looks awful in this game. What a big disappointment …
damn that sucks
Maybe they should have held Rebirth and made it a PS5 Pro launch title. The performance mode would probably benefit from a bit more horsepower…
man i hope they release a pc port with some RT shadows…
It always cracks me up when I see this Cloud character’s hair. Japanese character design in general is pretty much on par with my 4 years old niece’s drawings on the fridge.
They pushed the tech as best they could, if they switch to unreal 5, i dont know if theyll be a performance mode in the next game without it being even more downgraded than this games performance mode. I play on a 1440p monitor, game looks great to me but i do notice the bit of blurryness in performance mode. However unlike everyone else, im willing to take that hit, and maybe itll get patched. All in all, PS5 is 4 year old hardware, im glad its finally being pushed. But people whining, go PC. Theyre pushing the system, this is what happens on console when you push the hardware
Sony: How good are the graphics going to be?
Developer: Tifa in Bikini
Sony: Yes
The PS5 Pro should have been ready for the launch of this game.
Can we just get ff17. Who cares about these remakes. Ps5 has no games and feels worthless to have. Just like xbox.
I hate gaming in 2024 it sucks. Ps2 and x360 were great
I’ll play it in six months – when the PS5 Pro lands 🙂
Another unfinished game launch.. I hope they can at least fix these issues in post. It’s baffling how this game can approach the quality of prerendered CGI in its realtime cutscenes and at the same time have all these issues in actual gameplay.
Both modes look undercooked. I honestly like Remake visuals much more. Especially the lighting. Shinra building chapters were pure CGI tier.
It’s the only PS5 game I’ve ever played exclusively in graphics mode
I think they are prioritized other stuff over the optimization, SE didn’t want to postpone the release further. The issues they are having now because they implemented the World Map and that take a big toll on the tech aspects. Part 1 only had a handful of environment assets we have in Rebirth and only the streets and several dungeons inside Midgar.
Nevertheless, I’m playing it rn and having a blast, gonna 100% like Part 1. Hope they are developing updates to address at least the biggest issues and it’s not take a YEAR+, lol, like doors and backgrounds that got fixed only in Intergrade. And let em cook Part 3 as much time as they need. We will wait. There are always a plenty of games releasing + backlog.
Ew, some of those scenes look lit worse than early Xbox 360 games. Its crazy too because Unreal gives you the tools to optimize. Its definitely a bloated engine, but it also can run very well. IDK why they at least didn’t use ambient occlusion in those scenes, maybe their performance budget didn’t allow for it?
pc version can’t come soon enough. those lightning flaws, yuck..
I want to see how this would look in 4k with path tracing. Obviously the performance would be horrible if the game doesn’t get significantly more optimized, but I would like to see how it’d look.
Learned my lesson last time. I’ll wait for the integrade release, not into cut content, with a full price re release later.
And i might as well wait for the pc version, since theres no carry over, or otherwise incentive to play on the same platform.
Feel stupid for grinding for the godderadangadung.
the traversal animations are horrific. they remind me of more low budget JRPGs
Man this generation blows.
Man, can’t really decide between the two modes. I always go for the higher frame-rate but the hit in res/sharpness is just too noticeable, especially in a game as beautiful and full of detail as this one. On the other hand though, it’s really difficult for me to go back to 30fps, just simply panning the camera makes me want to go back to 60fps asap and combat feels super awful in 30fps.
I really wish Square would’ve put more effort into the performance mode optimization, especially when we have so many examples out there with really good-looking performance modes.
I have an oled Samsung s90c and perhaps I will play with 30fps and the motion interpolation turned on, the results are way far from ideal but it does smooth things a little bit. Either that or wait for the PC release, but there’s no way I’ll be able to avoid spoilers until then.
Does performance mode still look blurry, and does the high graphics mode do that stupid variable frame rate thing from 16?
Rebirth looks great most of the time but what is up with developers messing up indirect lighting? I was puzzled seeing Persona 3 Remake lacking indirect lighting the PS2 original had. Baked GI should be a thing of past but if it is used, I expect much better results in a PS5 title. Lumen and other real-time techniques seen in the likes of Metro Exodus Enhanced and Avatar look better to me and are still used in the performance modes.
holy shit look at that ghosting at 4:32, god damn
“A bit of ghosting” is an understatement. It’s insanely noticeable, and I don’t usually see TAA’s ghosting.
Yeah…. I’ve been around long enough to know I should wait for the ps5 pro to play this.
Just like with integrade, this title is meant for a developer double dip.
It’s a shame that we have to pay such a high price for bigger environments, not being able to enjoy the game at 1440p+ at 60 fps, with a ton of visual caveats.
Looking back at FFXVI and even FFXV it’s completely baffling why would they choose to work with the always problematic and so poorly optimized unreal engine.
Whatever they had FFXVI made with perfectly did its job. And I’m simply devastated to see how they butchered the Luminous engine with Forspoken, knowing what a visual treat FFXV was.
Well at least they were able to solve the terrible stutter that all UE games suffer from. Guess that’s thanks to Square Enix’s close collaboration with epic games when developing this game.
Will find out soon how the rest of the game looks, but at least in the demo the environments looked absolutely disgusting. I mean the art direction is just terrible. From the beautiful lavish forests and castles lit by vibrant particle effects in FFXVI we move to this garbage wasteland that is FFVII Rebirth. You can tell me that it’s a part of worldbuilding and it’s how the original game always has been. But I already live in a garbage dump of a city, and when I boot up a game that has “Fantasy” in its name I expect exactly that, not another barren wasteland to ‘explore’.
Either way, I feel mostly disappointed. Hopefully the story delivers.
Hope it gets a major remaster some day to polish
PLAYSTATION 5 PRO WILL FIX THIS PROBLEM I CAN’T WAIT FOR PLAYSTATION 5 PRO
While I like this channel, this is the only channel I know that can persuade people NOT to buy what every other video game channels are calling a 10 out of 10 game.
The most frustrating thing about this game is having to wait for PC to play it properly.
Graphics mode looks terrible in motion, at least in the grass lands. It’s an ungodly smeared mess and can’t see how anyone can recommend it. Maybe it’s not as bad elsewhere in the game but so far performance mode actually looks better unless there’s no character or camera movement, like screen shots, but otherwise it’s a horrible experience.
Sorry, but this is really fucking pathetic considering the game is almost 5 yrs newer, and does not have to support the PS4. It should look better in every SINGLE aspect, not slightly better in some, and much worse in others. It doesn’t have to support a 13 yr old console, so why such MASSIVE compromises for a PS5 exclusive?
Seems like it needs another 6 months in the oven to iron out these issues. Hopefully it’ll be patched and I’ll get it on sale.
I got the deluxe edition today but if it wasn’t for the collectibles I’d wait a couple of months to make the purchase for things to get ironed out! Come to think of it, my back catalogue is abysmal, so I’ll probably thin it out and if the patches aren’t anything substantial, I’ll wait a bit longer for the inevitable PS5 Pro upgrade!
That’s unfortunate I usually play everything on performance, but with this much difference I’ll have to go for Graphics, guess my eyes will have to readjust to 30fps 😢
2:36 < the upgrades 🫡
Thx for keeping it spoiler free. I’m still on the fence about this title, so will wait for some more information. This helped a bit at least.
Real shame it’s not as consistently pretty as FF16. That game was so much fun and unbelievably beautiful 💕
How can anyone listen to the lisp when he talks….
I’ll wait a couple of months, and pick it up during a sale. Maybe by then, the game have been patched, to deliver a better performance mode. I’m not in a hurry to play the game.
most of the negetives getting fixed with the PC version
1152p. Lol. That made my decision for me. This is a complete joke.
Please let it be a good PC port 🙏
I’ll have to wait for the PC version to hop in, can’t wait.
I wonder how it looks on a crt…
I’ve spent 4 hours messing with my lgcx settings…
Seems like another game I will wait till PS5 Pro release.
Seems like another very uneven effort from Square after FFXVI (unlike DF I don’t think that game looks particularly good outside cut-scenes). That game had some shockingly bad lighting and environments as well as well as a fuzzy performance mode. Odd, given both games use different engines, yet suffer from similar issues. It’s also a bit shocking that the PS5-only sequel very often looks worse than Remake.
i blame the weak as Gaystation for shity graphics!!!
So it’s a PS4 game? 😂
This should have released on PC too. So tired of Sony’s exclusivity bullshit to sell their console. I hope the PC port will be better than Remake and include DLSS and FSR.
Hopefully Square moves from UE4 to UE5 for the 5th game. Heres to hoping.
Don’t care how it looks, 60fps all the way. 30fps is mostly unplayable on OLED panels. I beat FFXVI at “60 fps”.
I doubt they will migrate to UE5. It’s the last entry, and they probably have tons of custom code and plug-ins made for UE4. I really wished they did, though, because UE5 scales better to newer hardware.
For the love of Pythagoras, add some damn motion blur .
8:36 “I’m not sure how a one-armed person is supposed to make those leaps” Wait until you see the dog making those same leaps right next to Barret
Can’t wait until I can do a second play through on pc with graphics mods. The performance mode can look very last gen.
Consoles are already outdated. Time for PS6
I’ve been playing this for a while now and feel like I’ve fallen in love with gaming all over again — perhaps the best gaming experience of my 30+ years.
I expect PC release to have all the same flaws but with added shader compilation and traversal stutters.
I only play quality mode so piss poor performance mode dont bother me. Just hope the motion blur is fixed for 30fps mode.
Oliver. I know you guys do mainly analysis but come on. A game of this scope and size and you’re expecting miracles visually? Far too long playing on your 4090s etc. This is a PS5.
FF16 was linear, performance mode was a joke with a FPS of 30 to 60 and it literally had minimal RPG elements. It’s was like playing a movie/,game…to which I stopped playing after six hours due to the performance mode…it was a mess… regardless of the visual splendor.
On the other hand Rebirth is a balanced technical game with highs and some ruff spots but as a game it shits on FF16…
Visuals are not what keep you playing for hours. It’s story, design and gameplay. If players are zooming in 300x when gaming to check for texture or poor anti aliasing then they should not be playing games..
We should be grateful to get super sized games like this… Otherwise it will be live service games and rinse and repeat western bull crap.
Sometimes folks need to differentiate between a top PC and console.. put those expectations in check.
I use a 4090 and I know what can push the superior image. Every time I play on PS5 I notice a huge drop in visual clarity etc but I expect that…that’s what we pay for.
This game could potentially be amazing technically on a good PC but whether that happens is to be seen.
2:37 Yes, big upgrades.
The main question we need to ask is… Tifa or are Aerith? 🙄🫣🤣
preordered the game…deliviery delayed until tomorrow….and i’m out of town! shit!
If horizon Forbidden West can look as good as it does and run pretty smoothly I feel the issues can be solved to run at least a little better
I am just going to wait for the ps6 remaster version. The game graphics are so bad I thought something was wrong with my tv or eyes.
When I played FF7 remake, even on PS4, I didn’t spend a lot of time thinking about the graphics at all.
In this, even though I love the gameplay, I’m constantly aware of the graphical limitations.
No 40fps balanced mode is unacceptable
Ok no joke I’m really impressed that Tifa’s chest at 2:36 reacts to her arms realistically!!!
Can’t wait for the PS5 Pro patch.
Thanks for the video! I like how Oliver is basically the Lord Varys from Game of Thrones of Digital Foundry. But instead of being involved in shady deals…
He talks about light source shading and whatnot 😅
Resolution for the performance mode averages at around 1152p, while the graphics mode is usually at or near 4K, with both modes employing dynamic resolution.
Source: eurogamer
Sounds like they plan on banking on a PS6 re-release that fixes a lot like Remake on PS5 did.
I’m still waiting for my next gen ps5 experience to arrive someday 🙄
Really wish 40fps was more standard. Really enjoy it on games that have it.
ssr on water is horrid, I would rather see no reflections at all
I’d rather play mid graphic with high resolution than high graphic with low resolution
Thanks for your video. But the 30 fps is so blurry when we move the camera. We can’t appreciate the 4K. We see nothing. I préfère the 60 fps. 😢
PC release when?
PS5 Pro needed 💟🌌☮️
When are we finally going to get realistic animations and collisions in videogames? PS8? Lol.
the timelines were totally unecessary. it contributed nothing to the new story. they dropped the bomb on Roche. His story wasnt as powerful as it coulda been. the music is downright boring. theres no more edge in the music sounding like disney made it. materia sizes are still inconsistent. one min the materia is a bowling ball next minute its tiny. when Reunion revenants transform, the cloaks are part of their skin lol. Valiant beast is now inconsistent from DoC. they overuse sephiroth again and overuse white background zack and aerith. You censored aerith death. ppl transform in smoke instead of body horror transformations. nobody likes ff minigames but they managed to include all the minigame types from every ff game. no ehrgeiz npcs. Og, the planet rewarded u with summons. in this game, you pull them out of VR which makes no sense. how can u pull physical objects from a computer??? this game could have been better than what it is
That looks rough to be honest. I missed the zoom% in the zoomed in bits. With a concrete value like 200% zoomed in you could take more away from it. Becaue if you zoom it in.. yeah.. it looks softer… thats for sure. But how much have you zoomed in.
Visually speaking, this game is a BIG disappointment
i believe nier automata and nier replicant have something like a 1080p or possibly even less resolution, yet the resolution there still looks better than performance mode here.
I’m still shocked how polarizing the FF7Remake entries are. Same with Integrade. How in the world is the general art direction so good but the lack of polish so apparent?? Even on PC Integrade isnt really good to this day, yet the basic visuals are really good even on older hardware. There are so many low res assets mixed in with beautiful scenery, I dont understand Square
Nothing hurts as much as low resolution, not even 30 fps.
Ok the resolution looking low I understand complaining about lighting not being good in background shots like in junon. Picky af lol, it’s not that deep.
4:31 to 4:35 is this tracer effect on the scooter the cause of dynamic res or taa or both? Either way it looks like shit
To be honest except for old 2.0 textures age, FFXIV look better to me
I was considering buying a PS5 to play this, but with the way it looks and runs in performance mode I think I’ll wait for the PC release.
I’ll wait with my purchase until they somewhat fix the performance mode.
“The first 40% of the game”, I’m out of here lol
I wouldn’t say it looks bad by any means. Just wish it was up to the standards of FF16.
I’m definitely holding off for the pc port. It definitely sucks but I can wait
30FPS in this game look like 20 FPS. While you dont move the camera the game looks gorgeous in quality mode but as soon as you move the camera its mess. Thats why im playing in performance mode. Even though it also doesn’t feel like 60FPS and its blurry af. It still feels better. But square Enix devs can’t optimize games. FF16 was the same.
Game uses Primitive Shaders so the PC version will require Mesh Shaders.
I’m looking forward to playing, but ill wait a few months at least. Hopefully they can fix the performance mode. Just got Infinite Wealth on sale and im finishing Persona 3 Reload, so it will take a while to get through them anyway.
If i was a betting man, i’d bet that PC version will be a stutter fest with shitty features and options just like remake was and issues most of which will never get fixed. SE seems to be unable to handle UE4 adequately. But hey, maybe it’ll get censored after 4 years or right away, this SE are masters of.
4:36 – Eww that FSR 2 ghosting tho…
As much as it sucks to stick to 30fps after just finishing up a hard mode run of Remake on PS5, I am thankful that my eyes adjust rather quickly, as long as I don’t get the urge to go back and forth for testing reasons. I use a 1440p 27 inch monitor to play, and while performance isn’t drastically worse looking to my naked eye, it’s blurry enough, and I am okay enough with 30fps, that I dont mind getting used to it. While I of course always would prefer a minimum of 60fps, I play enough games that’re 30 that I can deal with it, for example I’m also currently playing the original PS3 version of Yakuza 4 which of course is 30fps, so I’ve learned to just get over it.
I’m holding out hope that performance mode is fixed. I prefer it over 30fps as that mode is far to choppy for my tastes.
So waiting for pc version was right decision i guess😅
Performance mode is completely worthless if you can’t see shit because it’s so goddamn blurry 🤦🏻♂️
Should we just assume that if you don’t mention VRR, the game just doesn’t have it?
Well this is unfortunate since many reviewers were promising that “the final game looks much better than the demo”
This just goes to show how amazing Guerilla Games and the DECIMA engine really is. Horizon Forbidden West is still the best looking game on PS5
I wonder if this game started development as a PS4 game, or if a PS4 port was intended at some point _à la_ Resident Evil 4.
Please move on from Unreal Engine 4 already
I hope they implement ray traced gi and rtao to pc version
What is performance mode like on a 1080p screen where there is no upscaling to 4k required?
First game ive played where Graphics option is far superior to Performance.
What the actual fuck. Can someone explain why there are so many Final Fantasy 7’s?
They washed their hair and used conditioner, I see 💟🌌☮️
The big patch will come exclusive for ps5prp
Budget went into content it seems rather than graphical detail and optimizations. I feel like this is going to keep happening now with the rise of AAA budgets. We apparently can’t get both and then complain about sustainability.
hahahaha more like FF7 downgrade. Waiting for the PC version to play on rtx 4080
Stupid Sony and their timed exclusives.
they have to fix the performance mode. just unacceptable right now with the way it scales + the low res post processing
Why not just migrate to unreal engine 5, by now a lot of other games switched over mid development that came out over a year before this, better upscaling and way better lighting
I swear sony scammed us with this trash ps5 system. It’s literally a ps4 pro. I have yet to play a game that looks as good as uncharted 4 on ps4 pro or even last of us 2 on ps4 pro. Last of us 2 sucks but the graphics were really good.
I think the massive increase in a giant world made it so the graphics took a step down.
GOTY
Let’s hope both FF16 and FF7 Rebirth will come to pc before autmn but I guess they will be further apart than just a few weeks
If we get this on PC it will be stunning.
I’m definitely waiting for the PC version. Remake intergrade looked pretty good on the PS5, but this one looks like crap.
I wonder if the visual weaknesses will be fixed on the PS5, or if we have to wait for a PC version
Another great video, Oliver! I always enjoy your coverage and the way you present it!
Great video Oliver. Thank you and the rest of DF team for what you guys do.
Final Fantasy cash grab – another remake for milking the gamers .
I am astonished to see such awful shadows and low-resolution textures in a game made exclusively for the PS5. How did they look at this and think “This is good enough”?
I’ll wait for the pc port. Bummer.
I’ve been playing this and can say that the low graphic textures are very apparent. The biggest issue IMO is the lack of a motion blur toggle for the graphics mode, reverse ff16 kind of way, which if present might help hide some of the texture issues. Fortunatly, I am having enough fun to enjoy the whole but it is sad that FF7 Intergrade a 2.5 year old game, has better visual fidelity than its sequel.
Disappointing. FF remake is one of the best looking games on PS4, whereas Rebirth – outside of its cutscenes – falls a long way behind the PS5’s first party titles, and many third party offerings; Guardians of the Galaxy for instance.
Barret’s climbing skills are not realistic but no issue with how Red does it, Unforgivable animation then
Too bad they cow-towed to the complainer mob on the Tifa Costa del Sol scene!
She’s physical in more ways than one! Get over it
Thanks for throwing a wet rag on Rebirth…
Comment section: “LAZY DEVS NOOOO PERFORMANCE MODE SUCKS NOOO LAZYYYY”
Reality: “Your console is a budget pc that released 4 years ago with hardware equivalent to midrange hardware from 2018. Compromises are necessary and expected. Build a pc or cope.”
Sony paid exclusivity for this? At least FF16 made sense.
its not an exclusive….
Be on PC soon, still don’t want this crap…
Hope the pc version will have some extra graphical setting.
I do wonder if they will try to patch a bit the lighting. Kinda like how forspoken did
Yeah, we need a PS5 Pro.
This video is like a highlight reel of how insanely out of touch DF and its community is with the vast majority of gamers. While I definitely think that this analysis will appeal to some, i just don’t think it stands up very well to the eye test, which is actually seeing the game in action. I think it must be noted that not everyone plays games on a monitor or sits at a desk to game so alot of the criticism of closely scrutinized details comes off as nitpicking minutiae that doesn’t translate well or at all with what someone might be seeing on thier display while playing the game. I think as we approach the point in gaming where visuals are across the board better than they’ve ever been, we are delving further and further into the land of diminishing returns as alot of analysis of games visual make up feels like searching for the flaw to say that they noticed a flaw. I could be alone in this, and I AM OKAY WITH THAT!!!!! but i am just not seeing any of the criticism that is being pointed out here while playing the game without the pauses and zoom to 200%, which for my taste and I am sure alot of other people is fine. If the worse thing that can be said about the games visual quality is that it doesn’t hold up well if you pause and zoom in 200% in a specific mode, then I will call that a win for the game.
2:12 her arms, right…
Im not playing games this day an age at 30 fps… Period.
I tried to stick with performance mode but it was too blurry for me, so I went with graphics mode.
they would be blaming series s if it was on xbox
I will wait for a PS5 Pro version to play with a better resolution and more fps. Thanks as always for the video DF!
I don’t know if an engine switch is as simple as “upgrade all the assets”, even if it’s just from UE4 to UE5. To be fair, I know nothing of these engines, so I would have no idea if a switch would end up costing the devs more time just to either debug or chase broken assets or lighting options. That’s the only thing I can think for continuing to use UE4 – a switch to UE5 may not have been a feasible update if it essentially required going back through the game and tweaking everything to work properly.
I suppose the tradeoff is: ask old engine to do more demanding stuff and incur graphical cutbacks, or switch to new engine and have to rebuild assets/reprogram essential items.
Again, I’m not a developer – I don’t even know if it works that way.
That being said, I can’t remember the last time I stopped to admire shadow quality in a game, or polygon counts in foliage, or even foliage interaction. I know DF’s goal is to nit-pick the hell out of these things, and that’s honestly fine – that’s kind of the point of DF – but I just hope people don’t take these words to make it seem like 0/10 worst game ever for a few low res textures and some mediocre lighting choices.
The sad part is ff7 remake and intergrade (ps5 versions) actually look impressive at 60fps on ps5. dont know why they couldnt just stick to that at least for performance mode
I’m going to play on quality and let my brain deal with the choppiness lollll. No way am I playing on that fuzzy cactus bullshit.
I’ll play the first playthrough on graphics mode and any playthroughs after will be performance mode. Hopefully by then it’ll be a bit better
Another game I gotta run through my TVs motion enhance and BFI and take input lag just for 60 fps on Graphics mode because performance mode looks terrible on PS5, but so did Avatar.
“Check out the global illumination” while Aerith is in the background trying to push a shelf up 😂
Give PC release
This is the 3rd big AAA Japanese game with graphics/performance issues, Elden Ring couldnt keep a 60 fps neither did FF16 and now this, no offense but if Horizon Fornidden West has better graphics and can get up to 80 fps on performance mode and look sharper and better than this then theres no excuse. Cant wait for Dragons Dogma to have performance issues as well.
Less quality ‘assets’ on Tifa too. Now patched out in the first game because…the male gaze.
Let’s hope these visual regressions get patched up for the PC release.😊
Basically no improvements at all from the blurry textures and assets of ff7r on the ps4
They really need to do some fixes and not just for the inevitable ps5 pro update. Look at horizon forbidden west and how drastically they improved it over the year after release. It became pretty much visually perfect.
Final fantasy 15 seems oddly more impressive.
basically they put their focus on the cutscenes to the determent of the overworld, just like in Remake but more pronounced with the larger world
not surprised, or even particularly disappointed, but the performance mode being so blurry is pretty bad, hopefully it’ll get patched
2014 is calling, it want’s its graphics back
Ps5 really need a pro.
The graphics are so inconsistent I’d argue the first game looked better 😬
They should port the game to UE5 for the PC release but let’s get real, they won’t.
You guys really should be uploading these technical breakdown videos in HDR. Many of us have HDR capable displays and have for some time now. The entire point of these videos is to give the consumers a good idea of how the games will look and perform, so this is an obvious oversight. And because you have uploaded in HDR on several occasions in the past we know that you are fully capable of it and could if you wanted to. I’m going to keep saying this from time to time until you guys at DF get with it and do what you should have been doing for some time now.
Performance mode needs an update, but despite the resolution issues 60fps will always be better than 40k/30fps.
Who would examine this or any game up close though? For the purpose of this game it makes sense but when you’re playing the game you don’t pay attention to any of that. This is the definite GOTY of 2024.
What do people expect? consoles are struggling with games that have bigger worlds.. and the CPU is to blame for this..
Horizon and god of war look incredible in their performance modes. Both of those games look better than this one as well. Square did a horrible job with the graphics in this.
Given I’m in for cutscenes, plot and combat in this game I’m happy.
I hope they patch the performance edition, its very “soft”. Otherwise, having some fun.
Lol to all the morons stating “they fixed it with day 1 patch! The game looks SO much better in performance mode!”
Old UE Support TAAU and can even support TSR, this Games is a Shame that should be Shamed.
If it was EA or Ubisoft that would have released, people would have make a Drama of it.
Looks bad…
cant decide, but it think I wait for ps5 pro……………
Are there still people who believe the crappy magical PS5 SSD argument?
That 1440 fix is really interesting might try that even if it’s a minor fix
What brightness and hdr level settings do u recommend for LG G1 tv?
And this is why playing the game early on console is just depressing.
ps5 players is just beta testing the game for we Pc people
god those shadows are horrible, looks like it’s from 2000
your also forgetting with ff16 it ran at 720p up scaled with fsr 1 in perf mode and 1080pish in 30fps mode and the 60fps mode barely held 60 most of the time. I would say i prefer the game with less accomplished visuals if i get a solid frame rate at 1080p or higher. FF16 i never finished because the fps was so unstable and the picture so terrible on a 4k set.
@7:37
I wager all my materia that there will be a re-release for the PS6 with updated character models taken from the third entry.
i think its the First time that i will go with quality mode, performance mode looks so rough that dont compensate the 60fps, it might even hurt the eyes if play for too long
Glad to see they kept in the random PS2 era textures and geometry. Spotting those was my favorite part of Remake.
It’s a half baked game in graphics and animations just like yakuza games. The overall package is amazing tho.
Wait, this is just a remake of the stuff that is on PS4? Is it not the rest of the game?
It looks worse than Remake. What a huge L 😂
Has tifa nothing else matters . Game of the year 12/10
15 looks better then this smh
omg, SQE is really incompetent when it comes to technology.
I was jokingly asking the other day if “the door” from ff7 remake is back and apparently it is and it brought some friends.
I really don’t get it. Guerilla should help japanese studios, especially SQE with modern graphics.
This makes me quite mad tbh, especially that the 60 fps mode runs basically just over 1080p.
Guess I’m gonna wait for that PS5 Pro and if that doesn’t deliver, the PC version. I refuse to deal with this shit.
But then again SQE might never fix the bad textures and bad lighting as they never did with the original PS4 version of remake.
And people praise them for only having taken 4 years to finish this.
And no 40 fps mode. wtf..
It boggles the mind.🤦🏻♂️
Shout out to SquareEnix for censoring Tifa’s “features” in a silent day 1 patch after all the preorders were locked in.
Y’all are the reason people mods your games lol
how can a game look sooo good and yet soo bad.
I suspect we’ll get patches to improve these things.
It’s annoying how Performance mode looked better before people complained about the blurryness and Square went and changed the upscaling method for one that actually look worse. Before all you had to do was raise the Sharpness setting on the TV but now there is nothing you can do about it. With the current scaling method increasing sharpness make it look even worse.
So you guys gonna complain about Tifa being so unappealing to, with her unnatural appearance like you did with that Stellar Blade character model? 🤔
Can’t wait to start, going with performance mode all the way!
I’m still going to play it, but man I was afraid of this since the demo looked absolute garbo in performance mode…. Quality mode looked great, but 30 fps is hard to stomach for me most of the time.
Was going to get this on PS5 but I think I’ll wait for the PC version in a few months as the performance mode on PS5 looks far too blurry for my tastes.
Really curious, what you can do in the PC port just through the ini. In Remake you were able to quite drastically increase aspects of the visuals just through the ini. Add upscaled Textures and the visuals of Remake were a lot improved.
It’s subtle, but a major difference this time around is that Tifa is italian.
The 30fps looks so bad
Ps5 is kind of trash dude. Playing at 1080p lmao
8:41 You do know people can jump 10 meters high in this world right?
I had major issues on ps5 “slim” with controls. They seem to get better past the demo stuff
People that keep saying in forums , groups and Reddit that we do not need a ps5 pro are wrong IMO. This game is the definition of bring up a stronger console even if it’s not ps6 but we do need an upgrade becuase ps5 is lacking behind now and I can tell in the new games. So I’ll wait maybe ps5 pro will have a better performance , another game is spider man 2 dynamic resolution at 1440 p , not even 4k dynamic but lower than 1440p yet again that’s another example of needed a ps5 pro . I’ll wait .
man l wanted _the_ next-gen experience with this, instead it feeIs Iike the PS4 version of a PS5 game
I won’t even consider the graphics mode in a game if it’s not 60fps. I’ll deal with the issues you mention on 4k performance mode to get the better frame rate. IMO the smoother look and feel makes up for everything you mentioned
They should try to make a visual mode at 45 fps with a lower resolution then 4k! They should do something to meet fps and resolution somewhere in the middle! To be honest I don’t like how the game looks in any mode! This game is my most nostalgic and loved of the series and I can’t believe Square shipped the game so poorly!! 😔
this obsession with procedural graphix tech (ray tracing, normal mapped water ripples, foliage collision, etc) is sort of a western thing. The Japanese don’t really care about this stuff. _They care about big robots_
stellar blade#1
Omg..Remake Performance look better😢
I own FF7 Intergrade on PC, looks like I’ll be doing the same for rebirth. Being able to play at native 4k60 on my PC has spoiled me.
Roll on the ps5 pro for graphics mode and 60fps
The character models in this game just look goofy to me. There’s something with the proportions that are off or something. Or they look too realistic and you get these uncanny valley vibes
1:25 Look at Tifas shoulders here for example. There’s something very weird going on with this model.
2:12 I think they effed up Tifa tbh. Old one looks way better imo. Her head is too big now, which makes her limbs look too skinny. Its like a real face with some anime filter on it now too. Just weird looking and like I said, very uncanny valley
I don’t know if I’m the only one, but the characters seen in the vid, and especially the facial animation, is worse than the previous game. The characters look like android, paralyzed plasticine figures.
How’s it run on xbox ? 😂😂😂
Need a pc version asap
Quantity over quality strikes again
Can’t believe they still used unreal 4
Saw a picture of a dude from digital foundry wearing a school girls mini skirt and top. Was that for real or was it just a hoax? It was weird as fuk. Grown men shouldn’t be dressing up as school girls for whatever reason.
Can’t wait to pirate this on PC in 3 years
The game looks great but PS5 already has games superior to this one in terms of graphics, although it is most likely that it will continue to receive patches to improve its optimization to improve certain sections of the game.
Another failed performance mode release this gen. When will these companies learn to check with Digital Foundry before they release a game? This shouldn’t be acceptable.
They really need to drop UE4 for the part 3 of this trilogy.
The same people crying in the comments about graphics are the same people who say graphics don’t matter it’s about the gameplay.
I don’t even have a PS5, why am I looking at this? lol
Can’t wait for the PC release!
I found turning up the sharpness on my tv made it look better/less blurry. Not an actual fix but worth a try
This game REALLY needs a 40fps mode.
If anyone has a Steam Deck OLED, the game looks awesome in performance mode through Chiaki due to the smaller screen.
Hey Digital Foundry, how does it feel to critique incredibly visually accomplished games that cost over $200 million to produce and still demand better visuals? It makes me beg the question: when is it finally enough?
Battaglia’s favourite graphics are from a game that cost more than $400 million to make (Cyberpunk 2077), at what point do we finally draw a line and say “Video game graphics have gotten good enough”? I think games don’t need to look better than Uncharted 4.
I think FF7R2 looks good enough. I’m not a FF fanboy, just someone worried about the AAA landscape. The lack of interesting AAA games is because of the ballooning budgets caused by the ridiculous graphics arms race and insane scope which makes game developers make risk-averse decisions. Are we just going to give up on AAA games being fresh and mechanically interesting?
omg this game is so good!!
I’ll wait for the PC version which will probably have an Intergrade upgrade by the time. I’m done playing games in their subpar version because of console nonsensical greed-driven exclusivity. Also Sony nonsensical censorship is so stupid it makes my brain melt.
I think the last game looked better 😮
2:38 to 2:42 scene made my heart melt 🫠
Almost 4 years!
Many of the character models and textures in performance mode look as bad as a Switch game. What’s worse is how inconsistent the image quality is even between assets in the same scene.
They’ve royally screwed up the post-processing for anybody not interested in running a jerky 30fps on displays with high pixel response times.
Will be waiting for a significant patch (unlikely) or PC version.
Sorry but it looks like a PS4 game (not the cutscenes). 😕
ps5=joke
PS5 Series S
I’ll wait for the trilogy packed as the definitive edition
Sony needs to stop paying Square Enix 100 million dollar checks for Final Fantasy exclusivity.
And use that money to keep employees working
Performance mode looks so bad I’m putting up with 30 FPS.
Who still thinks a PS5 Pro is not needed?
Lol no xbox version
I got a pg27aqdm 1440p oled monitor and it supports 2160p signal though not a native 4K . Do you recommend that i change the resolution of my PS5 to 1440p for this particular title if I want for the pixelated fuzziness to go away if I want to play on performance mode ?
Great review Oliver.
Artstyle looks great but yeah… Good god lightning and some low res textures look awful:/
PS5 Pro should resolve some of these issues, that is if it comes out
what a beautiful game!
I pre ordered but am not buying it until they fix the performance mode blurry mess. Because it looks horrendous on a 4k tv. I was hyped but am not spending 70 bucks on something that hurts my eyes.
Watch it in 4k 60fps or more to really understand what it’s showing.
The lighting choices are truly baffling.
Excellent work as always gentlemen.
my nostalgia goggles may be on, but the jumping animations seem like a reference to the PS1 animations
F… UE4.
It could have been a masterpiece, yet most of the attention to detail went to the cutscenes, which are like 10% of the gameplay. Such a shame
So sad to see the resolution didn’t get fixed, guess i ll wait to the pc release
2:32 why doesn’t Cloud have blonde chest hair?
I’ll paitiently wait ’till it comes to Steam.
Nice. SquareEnix. Amazing artists. Not great engineers… Their art direction and strengths do cover a lot of ground though. I think this is an overall beautiful game, but not flattering for analysis.
O gee, only showing scenes from the first 40% of the game? O wow, thanks that’s so kind of you.
Need PS5 Pro already.
Jesus. This looks really poor visually. It genuinely appears like polish was forgone to rush this out the door in a given financial deadline, or forgo optimization in favor of downgrades to try and meet framerate targets.
What a mess. No way I’m paying full price for such sloppy polish. This game simply isn’t pushing visual boundaries enough to justify such a downgraded and shoddy perf mode.
Can’t wait to see how the PC version shapes up.
Arguing for a higher reliance on dynamic res as the cost for sharper shadows is wild. Jesus Christ dude. That is literally what makes games and development worse.
Square enix is literally a hit or miss since ff 15 even with the pc ports
Will look much better on Xbox Series when it releases next week. This video was about as short as the IGN analysis vid.
outdated graphics lol, SE and Sony loves outdated graphics always
yeah i”ll prolly wait for the pc port, but knowing square, i”m not thrilled.
Judging by remake PC release… I wouldn’t bet on PC release. It’s gonna be a huge mess. Stutter fest. texture problems etc….
Best thing we can bet on is PS5 pro to improve shadows/illumination quality maybe bring some form of ray tracing with its custom design if they are willing to go that far. But mostly we may get improved shadows/lighting with increased resolution and hopefully utilize sonys machine learning upscaler that’s unique to PS5 pro.
Great video. But complaining about Barret’s climb animation not being realistic is kind of moronic. It’s Final fantasy, man.
Can’t believe I am saying this but I’m waiting for PC. No way am I dealing with that blur on PS5.
I hate this and his lisp. Dont have him do commentary again.
This game doesn’t deserve compromises so I‘m going to wait for the PC release…
I think this game would look perfect made with Decima engine!
7:59 😂 the texture improvement will come in rebirth integrate
10:45 Is some of the cliff missing? I can see through some of it
Performance mode is super underwhelming the way it looks rn.
I can’t wait to play this game once I’m done with work.
You’re a star, keep shining bright!
Ps5 does an excellent job with its $500 hardware, the graphics are great.
8:35 Y’all are doing too damn much! How else is Barrett going to travel??? 😑
i really hope they put some effort in the PC port
Visually quite disappointing due to weak host hardware.
Waiting patiently for the PC release.
4:32 look at the ghosting that’s happening on screen. Oh my God.😅
Bought the Twin Pack yesterday just cause it was a good deal at 70 even though I already own Remake on Steam
Playing Remake maxed out at 1440p but man this looks noticeably better while offering a far bigger world, some texture issues aside
Only took 19 years but we’re so damn close to Advent Children visuals in real time. Hope the PC port down the road has more options than Remake’s port because I wanna max it out one day.
Not My Remake. I’d long for a Remake with less garbage combat and one that resembles the original story, but at least it looks nice to see the FF7 world reimagined in high definition.
Nice Segway to the vehicles. 😆👍
Looks worse than most PS4 games.
Nice try though Square………
Remake looks better imo
Time to get a pc for the next gen. These consoles are too underpowered. By then all xbox and PS games will be on PC anyway.
damn. The low res looks bad
Can someone tell me if this has spoilers, please?
Idk, I played 1080p games that appear way sharper than this
Let’s gooo!!! Hated going to work today when there’s a new FF game out 😫
This generation of consoles sucks, 30FPS for AAA games in 2024 is unacceptable.
Have to wait until PC release if you care about both graphics and FPS.
Wtf is with all these bots worshipping DF as if they’re gods?
It is blurry..
I wish I could be into these types of game. But it just never does it for me. No idea why.
Yeah
You guys wasted no time with this one. Lol
Looking forward to this review! Thank you for the early access.
