I usually skip the latter part of dialogue lines because of my ADHD but I didn’t skip any of Ben’s because they were all SO GOOD 🥹👍🏻

Watching this a year later, he is the perfect Clive, and while watching my husband play it, made me want to play. I love the story (minus the ending) and the characters. I had played FFXIV prior to this game coming out and I think it’s so fun to watch the voice actors play through it (I’ve been watching Colin Ryan play it from the beginning for the very first time).

Love many things about this game bit one thing always stays with me is the part when you’re switching between your Eikons and Clive yelling the names of the Eikons. Absolutely love that, hypes me up. It’s a small thing but I love it.

Ben’s performance as Clive is absolutely outstanding. He is such an unbelievably dynamic character, anybody who says he isn’t must not understand subtlty. I FELT those characteristics that these men talked about throughout the game. I loved the small details, like his dry humor and the way he just doesn’t get ruffled easily even when people are being ridiculous around him. As a pretty calm person myself who internalizes a lot of things i related to that sort of character. All of the work that was put into Clive as a character; Ben, the writers, the performance capture, the animators… they knocked it out of the park. And same for almost all the characters in the game, tbh.

Platinumed this game about 2 months ago now and just came across this video. Still think about FF16 on the daily and a big reason for that is this man’s performance and Clive as a character. He nailed it perfectly. Every emotion was executed so well that he genuinely made Clive seem like someone I know personally. If fact all the characters do. Saying goodbye to this game not once but twice really hurt. I hope he wins best performance but ik it’ll be tough after Spider-Man fans this year will no doubt vouch for Yuri Lowenthal after his great performance in Spider-Man 2

I finished the game about a week ago. There isn’t many games that give me this kind of satisfaction after completing the game and addiction to the world and the story. Enjoyed every moment of my 80 hour playthrough! This game was a spectacle! Voice acting was the best I have seen in videogames and i’ve been a gamer like 30 years! 🤓 Clive, Jill, Cid, Benedikta, Dion, Gav etc… So many great and memorable characters and voice actors! Soken did it again with the music and Eikon battles blew my mind with all the epicness!
I started my Final Fantasy journey about 15 years ago with FFX and have played all the games after that one and still playing FFXIV. FFXVI is my new favorite and Clive easily my favorite main protagonist, you were great Ben! Thanks Yoshi-P, Koji and whole crew, the game was a masterpiece! Definitely the game of the year for me! 🏆

Man clive voice acting ruined the experience for me. To bland, emotionless, the same ton throughout every conversation. I have to play again with Japanese voice actors to hopefully make the game mean something to me😅

15:22 Hah! Same for me. I restarted much sooner. I’m up-to-date. I returned in 5.35. But yeah I played to the end of ARR and a few patches in. “Dropped” the game and didn’t come back for many years. Don’t remember why I dropped it, think I wasn’t terribly interested in patch content, wanted to come back, but I had things like SC2 and other games vying for my attention. I think a new FFXIII game came out too?

Yoshi saved FF for me the day he took on 14 and made it i played that from the day it released and through that enjoyed his game and fell in love with Sokens music, 10 years ive lisenened to Sokens music in FF14 and YoshiP direction of 14 and to see them be in charge of 16 i knew were in great hands so epic and amazing it was 🙂 and Koji works so tirelessly hard to in localizing it so proud of them all Ben Starr was amazing so hope they get the well earned awards xx

Clive and Cid had hands down the best voice actors of 16, competing with other fantastic voice actors also giving it their heart and soul. Hugo absolutely sells the weight and gravitas of his character, Barnabas sells his nihilism, Benedicta sells her authority…

Came back to watch the video after experiencing the game and yea, Clive is everything they said he would be and they were able to make Clive my new favorite Final Fantasy Main Character. The team did an exceptional job and I’m glad to see the hard work that they put into the game translated very well.

I played every part of the side quests before I finished the game, and my gods my heart broke. This game is so beautifully written and the emotions that are conveyed are beyond anything I’ve experienced in any video game I’ve played. Im still reeling from it weeks later and I definitely wont forget the impact this story on me has had. I really hope this game has some kind of dlc, and regardless of who is in it I’d be happy to spend more time with the characters.

Watching this after finishing the game, what superb voice acting, can’t wait to see his future roles!

This game has some of the best writing I have ever experienced. The narrative is so engaging and real that I truly cannot wait to experience more of Clive’s story (although Cid is a close contender for my favorite character). I also really appreciate how focused this game is on the story. The format works very well, the voice acting is absolutely amazing, and every single character is memorable. It’s so good I already used it for a college assignment lol. I have always loved how the Final Fantasy team is not afraid to step outside the box and strive for quality above all else.

Ben, you absolutely nailed the role as Clive. Easily my favorite protagonist in the series, and I like him even more after watching this interview. Truly an incredible job you’ve done bringing his character to life.

What I would really love to know is precisely how it is that (very nearly) every Final Fantasy game ends up with the PERFECT team working on it. Honestly, how do these people find each other? What is the process? How did the stars align to get Koji Fox, Yoshi-P, Soken, Maehiro, Takahashi, Ben Starr… people with massively different skillsets, but each of them PERFECTLY suited for their role in this project… How did they come together? Sometimes I think the most important talent in stuff like this is not the technical stuff or the artistic stuff, but just the management skills needed to assemble the ultimate team.

I’ve only played the demo, so far – my Collector’s Edition should be arriving, later today!
So far, I really like Clive. He seems very well-intentioned and mindful of other’s feelings. I like how he mimicked his father’s kindness to others. Empathy and likability are not typically traits that a Final Fantasy main character usually exhibits, right out the gate. So happy to finally see a shift from the moody, mysterious and emotionally cold main characters.

Final Fantasy is the reason why I am an author today. In fact, I am lucky enough to be a game author right now. I first played Final Fantasy VII and ever since I have loved storytelling. Final Fantasy has always been character driven, even in the very first games and although I can’t afford a PS5 right now, I know this game will be the same and I look forward to it. After having written three books I began thinking about why I am a writer? and I thought, well, because of Final Fantasy VII and IX in particular. Okay then, why not try getting a job as a writer for a game? Years later I finally landed a job writing a game. We hope that in a few years the game will be coming out and after that, I am going to do everything I can to get on the writing staff of a Final Fantasy game. それが私の夢です

too be fair as a huge fan of ff14 put a years worth of time into that game i was nervous when i heard they were coming out with a ff16, once i found out it was koji fox and naoki yoshida behind the project with the heavensward team i knew we were going to get an amazing story. But having played the demojust recently and seeing what the game is shaping up to be even though it went with an action formula instead of turn based that i loved in past games, man this is the first ff standalone game i am truly excited for, prepaid the collectors off and just cant wait to get my hands on this title and put time into this universe. havent really liked a ff since 6 or 7 honestly and excluding the mmos but 11 and 14 are both great games and the story for 14 is top tier with endwalker (cried more then i should admit) and shadowbringers took that game to new heights and the asicans with Emet. thank you for giving us good games with amazing stories. I look forward to thursday or friday to play this game on vacation.

You really can feel that all those emotions are genuine and come from heart. It’s so rare to see devs not being business-robotic nowadays. This is why i love CBU3. Whatever they’ll release in the future, i’ll play it.

The biggest battle is with himself. I love these characters as they hit home. Its easy to hate yourself and not forgive yourself for failures and mistakes. Overcoming yourself is lifes biggest challenge.

Ben Starr literally just picked up voice acting recently. Don’t recognize him, I looked him up and only seen 2 characters that he worked on. Clive is one of them

The worst localization director of all time is there. I’m not native in English and I know Japanese as well. I prefer to play Japanese games in Japanese dub with English subs and seeing the difference in what they are saying and what’s written in subtitles disgusts me. You practically alter the whole meaning of sentences in the name of “localization”. This only happens in Square Enix games because this Koji Fox guy. He should be fired. I’m sure he can find another job with good pay.

Just popping in after watching streams of the demo and HOLY COW. All of the voice acting performances were outstanding, but Ben’s in particular was S-tier. Dude deserves a BAFTA.

After watching streams of the demo, its clear how the EN voice acting quality is so much higher in this game (even better than FF7 Remake, which isn’t terrible but pales in comparison). Bonus points for casting Ralph Ineson as Cid for this game, too.

The amount I heard from “Revenge Clive” was outstanding, I cannot wait to hear the emotional Clive when they said putting an emotional Clive in the trailers wouldn’t excite people for it, they needed an explosive set piece with likewise performance from the VA to make people hyped.

Great seeing more Brits in RPG localisations (like FF14, DQ, Xenoblade). From what I’ve seen in the trailers and previews it looks like it’ll be a great dub! Hopefully we get something like this for the next XIV expansion. Lord knows the Scions have given it their all over the past few years.

You guys won’t ever top Squall and FFVIII for it’s emotional resonance for me… But I hope its successful, even if I don’t like FF anymore thanks to XIII, XV and modern FFXIV (watering down the game to much, rushed story in endwalker).

Ive been playing FF since I was a 8 year old boy, now a 31 almost 32 year old man, so no matter what I’ll wish for it to make a great game in the series and do well.

If it wasn’t for XV, I would be working for Square Enix tbh. Oh well, good luck Yoshi P and your team for FFXVI, and I hope XIV improves substantially in 7.0.

The way Ben describes Clive Rosfield in one word as LOVE. 1:35-1:37 That felt so right and made me love Clive even more. 😭💞

The storytelling has truly been taken to ANOTHER LEVEL with this title, in the writing and performances of the characters. Beyond any doubt. They match with the gameplay, the music and cinematic-style in a harmonious and immaculate attention to detail. The immersion transcends the intensity of the what, the why, the how… We have so much to be grateful for.

We got Clive by HAPPENSTANCE because the vocal director knew he’d struck gold, despite Ben auditioning for a minor role. Bravo.

As a french, my first experience won’t be with Ben, but if the game is as good as my expectation, i’ll probably do playthroughs in other languages 🙂 Patch 6.4 for FFXIV tuesday, FFXVI demo in maybe 2 or 3 weeks and the full game in a month, what a time for a FF fan !

maybe im just crazy, but has Ben had a lot of big roles in movies, tv, or video games before? i checked imdb and its not a big list, nothing jumped out at me. i believe the voice actors for Noctis and Lightning were the same way, before they got cast as the lead in an FF game.

is this a trend for Square Enix, to take a fresh sprout and give them something incredible to shine with? either way, Lightnings voice actress was incredible, and Noctis voice actor had the same optimism and excitement Ben has here, and he was amazing as well. i have no doubts this game will be magical, i cant wait to get to know more about Clive!

I’m so glad they actually cast English voice actors for this game. It gets so boring hearing every character have an American accent. FF12 did a great job mixing up the voice cast. This is going to be epic!

One thing I was worried about for XVI was that it would lean too dark and serious, and end up being a grim & joyless experience. Hearing Ben emphasize the sense of humor in Clive & the other characters is such a relief! Can’t wait to play this next month!

Wow, I love how much emphasis there is on Clive’s personality. There is so much more for us to see. I can tell they have something very special here and I can’t wait to experience it.

I literally cannot wait to see Clive and how he develops across the years. Ben sounds like he has embodied so much of the character by this point, and that just bodes so well for his performance.

Clive sounds like one of the most three dimensional heroes we’ve gotten in the FF series, and I have a feeling FFXVI has the potential to be devastatingly heartbreaking. Obsession for revenge while simultaneously “battling with himself” IMHO can’t end well. (Plus, Yoshi-P and Kazutoyo Maehiro are in control… I have cried SO MANY TEARS in FFXIV so far!)

About 11:10, i fell in love with this series after playing FFXIV, which made me then play FFVIIR and FFIV.
With the amount of love and care CBU3 surely put on FFXVI, i’m sure it will also attract many new fans that will get excited, laugh and cry while experiencing these great games.
I can’t wait for FFXVI.

The whole voice-cast looks amazing and props to the localization team too- with some of the trickiest choices to make in the industry. Can’t wait to play this and laugh about “xxxsexycliverosfieldxxx the Useless Dragoon” and then do a lot of crying. 😆😭😆😭

Definitely get the feeling that Clive’s main battle is with his guilt of failing to protect his younger brother. The robed man we’ve seen in other trailers I have a feeling is the darkness he feels inside himself. It’s going to be a sixth sense situation where it won’t be obvious but only he will be able to see the robed man because he’s not real.

Anyway, that’s my theory.

You can tell that Ben has put a lot of care and consideration into how he approaches the character of Clive. It’s always refreshing to see an actor become just as invested in their role as the fans do.
