Why Final Fantasy 16 Is So Disappointing
Why Final Fantasy 16 Is So Disappointing. From wasting Cid, its FF14 raid boss Eikon design, to its bad pacing and bloated dialogue. Reskinning Yotsuyu into Benedicta, and its MMO feel. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 sparked debate about modern Final Fantasy. An FRPG take on the JRPG genre. From my first playthrough and reactions to this turn-based combat dark fantasy. A video game by Sandfall, a French company with exceptional talent, made up of developers who left Ubisoft. It feels like the Final Fantasy game I always wanted. Incredible writing, music and direction. Featuring a great cast of characters, with fine voice acting from Charlie Cox (Gustave), Kirsty Rider (Lune), Jennifer English (Maelle), Shala Nyx (Sciel), Ben Starr (Verso) and Andy Serkis (Renoir). Featuring an awesome system of Parry & Dodge timing, and QTE. Drawing influence from unexpected places, like Legend of Dragoon, Dark Souls and Chrono Trigger.

Final Fantasy XVI on paper is awesome. In practise however, it is boring, unsatisfying, and its elements are mishandled. It’s designed like an MMO (despite being a single player game).

I cant take this guys opinion seriously
I was already out when it was a single character and had absolutely no turn based combat in it. As soon as it was clear it was closure to god of war then ff I was out
I enjoyed the game and its themes, and as much as it does misstep on some of its writing, pacing, and world building, I think it’s still a decent game. Does it live up to other FF games? No, it misses the mark a bit. But it can has some solid foundation and good (though not my style) gameplay, and you can definitely see where they were trying to go with it
The only thing that bothered me was Jill wasnt there for the final fight Its also not some woke “they left out the girl how dare they!” its because i want the full party for the ending. I get they were dieing and she especially and i was super excited their was a love story in Final Fantasy again. Which i think is a key thing about them as well. But felt betrayed i didnt get Shiva/Ifrit/Phoenix fighting side by side. Im just gonna let my lover go alone to save the world and then her actually doing exactly that was so stupid lol
Despite its flaws I was more invested in the Clive/Joshua story in FF16 than I was with COE33, despite COE33 having an objectively better overall story. I think in hindsight a lot of the reason why is because Ben Starr’s best VA in FF16 was all in some way related to Joshua, and took me a few reruns of the game to really notice the flawed writing and plot holes.
The pacing of FF16 does feel like a FF14 expansion for single player with better graphics.
The one major letdown for me with FF16 is the combat, and maybe that is with hindsight following COE33. The DLCs really highlighted this, and to this day I still haven’t got the Platinum Trophy for FF16 because of how clunky a lot of the combat is for the Trials. FF16’s combat style aged very poorly.
I did enjoy 16, it’s one I enjoyed a lot. But I completely understand the problems that the game had. And I’ve shown your shorts to my friends who wanted to learn my love hate relationship with the series
My thought process is 16 was the introduction for me…if that’s the worst there is…it’s only up from here boyos let’s goooo
Sebb always vasually spittin facts 🎉
I agree with all of this.
I report you for sexual abuse on Joshua
Ff16 could be great if it was a trilogy or something like that because it give it to you so much informations about the universe but we interact with almost nothing so at the final it’s to much…
Your takes on ff16 killed me 😂😂😂
is this guy a voice actor
It makes you question yourself. “Am i emotionally dead inside or is the game just bad at telling stories”.
Thank god its just the game
Look it was a bit slow paced but over all the story was good it feels bloated to some because there was alot to cover older ff fans are used to short fast story stuff and long slow level grinds so the change to a faster game play and leveling system means even the old stories would feel longer i believe ff 16 was over all a great game with a good story not the best story ff has ever produced but honestly better than anything not an mmo since 10
I didn’t like the fact they used ff14 devs on 16.
Im tired of people putting expediction 33 as example its a decent game but its a average modern rpg i reccomend you all to actually play modern rpgs and you see that game its not special
U are nitpicking. Ff16 is fire. And ive been playing FF since nes…u dont like the writing. Cool. That doesnt make an ACTION GAME bad….the action being bad makes and action game bad. Now if the writing AND combat was bad…especially bad turned based combat, THEN u can say they GAME is bad
Zhanks… The Start of 16 was nice.. seeing all this things, ifrit and all.. but then.. the gameplay, the story, all does dialogs.. it bored me so fast i didn play it to the end… maybe got like 50% of the Story
Eikon fights took way too long and were not fun, story was not great and some parts like what you mentioned were so dumb, combat so bad I tried to avoid fighting as much as possible…this, rebirth and now Dawntrail has me worried for the future of FF. When XVI makes XV look good you know they are in trouble lol.
“He starts lore dumping as he dies in his arms!”
I hate it SO MUCH when someone is “dying” and decides “I’m drop insane lore for the next 15 dialogue boxes”
You are both so hilarious and so right about this.
i will say this
16 is actually the first FF my gf was introduced to ( she didnt care for sci fi FF, she liked high fantasy DnD like stories )
We adore Clive, we love his story as a character, however i WILL ADMIT that with the Clive goggles off that the writing and pacing of 16 was SUCH A SLOG. It had really cool lore but looking back there were plenty of times where i was waving my hand going ” come on get on with it ”
I still defend ff16 as a fun game, the gameplay was fun and the boss fights were cool ( although a lot of it is flavored by the soundtrack for the game, and i will die on this hill that ff16 has REALLY GOOD music when it wants to go off the walls )
Clair Obscur writing is 10/10 though
Compare 16 to 9 and X. I don’t want to see 17 at all.
So many based takes. I unsubscribed just so I could subscribe again.
I don’t care how popular it was. Game of Thrones ruined media.
But the worst part of the game was the side quests. They’re so tedious
The worst in this writing-style is that only Clive believes that Joshua is dead, because you see like 30s after his “death” in the intro, that he is fucking alive. So you “suffer” through Clive’s misery for HOURS, knowing it’s all for nothing. And after Cid is gone, yeah – Clive just become a cheap copy of Cid, so that they got rid of the bad character they created.
And Jill… this woman is so obssed with Clive, for no reason. They dont have any really deep moments together and in the moment she says “Yeah, it’s my time for plot” you are not even get the chance to fight as her… she is just flying around while Clive beats the butt of her nemesis.
And yeah, the fights are really only a Hd Remake of the 14 fights, they even reused the icons for the items in the inventory….
16 was a disappointment through and through.
FF16 started strong but got lost along the way. Real shame, it had a chance at being the first good FF since 10.
ff16 was ok. it was just to long for the co.bat scheme it had. it need more of an abundance of abilities. the same 5 basic hits was annoying. i kmow you jad eikon abilities but u only jad 2 eikons for the first 10 to 15 hours of the game. thebside content wad usueless and it needed a varety of different weapons with their own combos.
Wow I didn’t notice that your so right, less is more, I’m here, I know, I know, it makes you want more like my god they didn’t get to say everything but they kinda did, and it’s amazing cause it’s actually less work lol 2 lines done.
People don’t talk enough about how dumb the AI is in 16. You can just stand there for minutes and the enemies literally won’t do shit. Outside of like 3 bosses the game is laughably easy.
ff15….sucks. I loved 16.
I mean I get the criticisms for Rebirth and 16 but I was addicted to both of those games and got the platinum for both. I will say Rebirth’s platinum had me rethinking my sanity by the end.😅 The difficulty spike thrown at you for those final few trophies was insane.
Final Fantasy 16 is much better if you’ve never played FF14.
I won’t defend 98% of ff16’s writing
Yet I will say there was some great lines in there
But ff16 had a dog. Lol
The writing of FF16 is like the writing of Dragon Age Vielguard. I rest my case
Yoshi P is a terrible director imo. Bland and unimaginative. He needs a strong writing team to tell him no sorry dawn trail is crap
the setup was so good but the writing was ehhhh questionable. The Odin fight was so weird after it got setup to be eclipsing Bahamut. and Ultima…… Ultima
16 had so many cool things going for it. But god did it become a drag. Side missions felt so awful to go through. How after a fight with Titan where you changed the entire landscape of a massive portion of a continent, do you go to pick flowers for medicine and kill a couple of wolves attacking a town.
I like 16 but yea, you’re right
XVI was really good right until about the halfway point, even after Cid died there were still incredible moments like the entire conflict with Bahamut, and I’m not just talking about the spectacle, but the narrative as well.
Unfortunately, it was all downhill past Bahamut’s chapter.
Not a big fan of Final fantasy but I can say I’ve played 7,8,10 and 6 and 16 compared to them Story wise is lame, but combat wise prefer 16 not a fan of turn based rpg. That’s one of the reasons why my Forever Best Final fantasy is always Dissida 012 Duodecim. Honestly wished more people talked about it.
U fckn blow ass
I hate FF7, but I like FF16 a lot.
Well, this is a super bad hot take.
Wow huge spoiler in that YT shorts
Clearly they decided to turn FF16 into an advertisement for their mmo..
Honestly, it’ll never happen but…I just want my remake of FF6. Can you imagine how good that would look in a gritty dark 3d retelling?
Guess I am not playing 16 until it is truly on sale like 50% off, was already put of by the dmc wannabe gameplay and basically no party member. This just seal the deal for not playing it at this price.
hear me out…
eikon may cry
I’m absolutely obsessed with FF, the only main entry I’ve yet to play currently is 11 because I didn’t have a good enough PC and I had to take a break at the start of Heavensward because of college. But otherwise I’ve played a version of all of them, 1-16, 4 the After Years, Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core, VII Remake and Rebirth, X-2, the entire Ivalice Alliance (Minus Vagrant Story), the XIII Trilogy and Type-0, Dissidia, 012 and NT, Dimensions, World of FF, Kingdom Hearts, Bravely Default and Second (still need 2). And I’m not stopping until I’ve played as many as I possibly can. Square please make the delisted IOS stuff playable in some capacity! I missed my chance the first time! 16 was definitely an amazing new entry, some stuff could’ve definitely been tightened up, but the sheer awe I had during its best moments I’ve not felt in a game for a long while. Remake and Rebirth as well blew my mind as well, it felt like such a labor of love for not just the original VII but the franchise as a whole, I felt like a giddy little kid the entire time. Like holy shit they actually made XIII’s stagger system fun! They brought back IX’s weapon ability system! The mini games are actually playable! Gilgamesh makes a return! They’ve definitely picked up some of the slack from the XIII/XV era of stuff, just wish the company as a whole could get its shit together
i enjoyed ffxvi until i got lore dumped on repeatedly. It really sucked the joy out of the game when it required you to sit through minutes of exposition that, frankly, don’t matter before you can move on.
The best part of the game, to me, was the twist involving Barnabas being an akashic and turning the entire kingdom he ruled into akashics. Probably because the pacing involving Barnabas built him up as a badass.
It makes me really pissed off that 15 is more hated than 16 and that really freaking breaks me and you know you just add you know swearing and sex and what not to 16 and that automatically gets people into the game like when 15 first came out that automatically was my favorite final fantasy game.
Then when 16 trailer dropped I was like oh this looks so cool and then it was just this darker like MMO based fantasy game it was like they took Lord of the rings and just kind of just slapped the final fantasy title on there.
I saw it Clive and Jill’s dynamic with some of the best romance I’d seen in a final fantasy game but The story just I don’t know I didn’t really feel like I could connect with any of the characters.
While with 15 I could connect with every single character even Sid and Cor. Even the side characters I could connect with in 15 and I’m not going to lie when Clive died I did not shed a single tear I was just like his sacrifice was just weird.
Now when Luna died I was devastated I thought I’m the most broken man on this planet just from seeing a fictional character die. And then they broke me more by having noctis sacrifice himself so he could be with Luna and finally keep Ayrden out of the way. Many tears were shed mostly for me and you know me I’m a 23-year-old grown ass man and yet it still broke me.
What happened to attacking the problem and argument but not the person. Contradictory and hypocritical much😂
Most metal gear solid in the nut shell
Did we play different FF16s? Because the game I played was filled with emotion and love and incredibly well done acting and writing? Perhaps you think LOTR was paced wrong?
Final Fantasy XVI bored me to death: kudos to everyone who actually endured it to the end. I gave up by the time I got to Odin
I just liked Clive as a character and I enjoyed the gameplay. Story agreed great on paper, but heeeeaaaavy on dialog.
saying Yotsuyu is the worst written villain is insane
I still think FF7Remake/Rebirth is way worse than FF16
This guy is a professional hater
Thank u for the Spoiler-Warning, so i could stop ♡ by the end of this month i will buy the game ,so yea thanks 🙂
FF16 is a bit too theatrical at times but at least it is fun to play. The only thing i remember from FF15 is driving the car with dancing mad on the radio (and i got platinum on both 😂)
Final Fantasy XV had really good story it just sucks that it was like a live action model type of game instead of a real RPG
I can’t seem to finish this game either. I can’t finish Final Fantasy rebirth either both games just seem way too drawn out. And when you do have fights and stuff it’s just anticlimactic. It sucks because I want to be heavily invested in these games but they’re just not good anymore
Hammer meets nail. Like for real.
Cough…. FF16…. Cough…. with turned based combat…. Cough…. With an actual party…. Cough…. With an actual halfway decent story….. Cough…. And maybe throw in A Sakaguchi clone for added effect.
If SE had done this, FF16 would have been one of the best selling Mainline Final Fantasy games of all time….. Crazy how FF13 (The original versions specifically) sold triple the amount FF16 with much less effort and with way more scrutiny
I lost interest right after I gained garuda. So 😴
16 is so fun gameplaywise. But i just didn’t feel the story. It was so…. meh. Just as you said, a lot of info dump, a lot of exposition, weird pacing through, 5 year long time skips. You just don’t feel the connection between characters, because all they do is info dump between each other. Even this scene that was supposed to be the peak romantic scene of the game was like 4 minutes of dialogue trying to move the plot instead of cementing those two as characters.
And you don’t know what opinion is
I can understand the problems you have with side quests, but don’t you touch the story it is beautiful, and you’ve put up the most pathetic attempt at saying why it isn’t
And yeah, I rewatched Joshua’s death scene 10 times and I still think it’s a masterpiece
And this is why I never bought it. It’s written like an MMO and it plays like a western ARPG. I don’t want those things. I want an FF game.
I’m enjoying it.
Benedikta had a lot of potential as a character. But then she died. I liked her and Cid the most man.
Once they both got killed off the game got really dull.
You just don’t fucking like anything
Personally I think FF16 was incredible until after the Bahamut fight. Side quests def needed a lot of work though.
Bad pacing sure, but was a great story
I really honestly hate this way of thinking. Because ff16, while mid af, is still someones favorite and they enjoy everything about it. And its talk like this that makes people feel bad and like their subjective opinion is wrong and they’re stupid and wrong for having it
The difference between FF16 and Expedition 33 is that the writers understood and embraced the importance of SHOW, DON’T tell in this medium format in 33. They let the actions, and the expressions of the characters to show the situation with as few words as possible and where it counts. If you wanna info dump/expositions have it separate and in the recordings to further expand the world you create. The characters LIVE in it and respond to the world they live in. Not go about lecturing the audience like it’s some soap opera seminar.
16 was a chore. Side missions back and fourth was just boring. If you focus on just the main story its incredibly short. I was so hyped for 16, such wasted potential of the world and lore
Seriously L take… FF16 was a freaking masterpiece. Only 3 games have made me cry. ME3, FF16 and OOT. I will admit it was mainly the music, and 80% of the game was filler and bloated dumb dialoug but man that 20% was the definition of EPIC!
So you mean Yoshi-P just made a FF game that’s a Dragon quest game? yeah that tracks.
“If you don’t agree with me, you’re wrong” you must be fun at parties lol
When Cid died I peaced out
I never thought i’d forget a final fantasy game existed but until now i forgot FF16 was a thing.
Write a story then
At a certain point you’re going to have to admit you’re just a snob….It’s not like expedition 33 is perfect there are plenty of flaws with it too yet you love it.
@Sebbywebz I’m surprised you didn’t mention clive’s mom
I thought Joshua’s passing was very touching. Not his rambling but when voice remembers him as a child, the first time he met his brother made me emotional because my older sister always tells me how the first thing I did when she met me was grab her finger and how she’ll always remember that. Having Clive remember the exact same thing made me love their relationship even more. I’ve commented before when you bashed 16, and the dialog is different in Japanese, i think Clive is way more likable in Japanese than in English.
16 has the 14 expansion bore at it’s midpoint before it picks up again.
It’s very wild when you play 14 since 2015 and see the same written steps that they take.
Great opening. Strong lore. Boring ass midpoint that players skip since it puts them to sleep or that just do not care. And then the ending picks up with the final boss.
Boom main base game story done- now you add in the patch story which can be throwing darts at board.
Whomever is writing for 7 Remake they’re making it at least unique while keeping in OG silliness.
In ff16… the only reason I remember the MC’s name is because I also play tekken…
And I’m a huge ff fan
16 on paper is like a game i always wanted as a teenager.
“Broo like what if the next FF had like better kindom hearts combat and was less scifi. And had sex in it”
Yotsuyu worst villain? Ok now I know he’s trolling
Yoshi P is overrated
clair obscure can lick my ifrit ass
the game is fucking epic man you dont know nothing
Well sorry mate expedition 33 has a lot of boring moments if not for that battle system i would not find a reason to move forward 😂
To me, FFXVI had such 10/10 sections but you often had to go through hours of awfully paced 7/10 content to get to them. But when it was a 10 it was a bloody 10. “I am a shield of Rosaria… AND I WILL DO MY DUTY!” will never not hype me up.
But I absolutely agree that the final lore dump was an awful decision, it literally brought the finale of the game to a halt and killed all of its momentum. I was like “Josh my boy, we can swim back to the hideout, get you patched up and swim back here and there would still be lore to spare, come on man.”
FF10 storyline will always be FF goat.
Totally disagree but its good to see differing opinions
I love FFXVI. Yeah, I don’t know anything about writing. I am not an author nor a writer. It’s not my profession. I may be wrong. But ultimately, all that matters to me is whether I enjoyed what I paid or not 🙂 And I’m leaning more on the former.
Yeah we went from 15 which hit with a dark story but by the end i felt like we took our land back atleast to 16 which was to me litterally just depressing.
Eikon fights reminded me of fighting the epitaphs in .hack G. U.
I kinda digged it.
I don’t know what it takes to cry at a gomage, especially when you find out that they’re just fictional characters
Ben made Clive awesome and I did like the fights/overall story but the bloat was really bad and took me out of the stuff I liked lol
Can’t defend the writing of 16 just as much I as I can’t 14.. storytelling isn’t BU3’s strong point (I honestly don’t know what their strong point is any more) which is wild considering they develop in a gene where the games are story centric.
i can defend it, just putting it side by side to ff13 and 15 and 7remake, ff16 writting is shakespeare
I personally enjoyed the story
I loved 16’s combat and thats literally it. So much cool shit and tech wasted on a horrid story, characters etc.
I do wish i could dis agree but outside combat i straight up forgot ff16s story till you mentioned it,i only remember the main bits. Compare that to ff15 which is debatabley a worse game but i find myself thinking of not just the gameplay but the story of that aswell very often. People forget that when it comes to games especially rpgs a characters story is just as crucial as how he/she moves or fights if not more so
Thank you for saying this. It wasn’t that good of a game. I put it down after 13 hours in, and never felt the feeling to go back. Just felt boring. All the big moments are broke up with 2x the amount of just boring fluff.
Way too many people that glaze this title, go play DMC it’ got more susbtance that FFXVI.
And don’t reply with some book long defense of this title. I won’t read all that, and you are just proving my point in being a “glazer”. If you feel the need, go find a subreddit to rage on. I won’t feed into your childish need for opinion approval. 🤷
I know this is a complaint about 16, but i would love to hear Sebby talk about 15 😂
Oh my God you had me rolling on the explaination of the ff16 death scene LMAO
Ngl Joshua’s death in 16 started out devastating and ended up being unintentionally hilarious. It felt like the mask when he fake dies in the guys arms and spitting out old movie quotes. lol
Let’s fkkkkkk GO! bro…. BRO.
Oh I hate the boss fights…just let me fight. Don’t put cut scenes in the middle of a damn boss fight 😡🤬
ff16 is a testament to why solo character action games should only be 10-15 hours long max.
Playing as only one character for 60+ hours is boring af.
Yes you get more stuff added to his kit through the game, but he still plays samey the whole game.
If they stick to the action I hope it is more like Tales of or Star Ocean in the future. At least with those you can swap around the character you play with their own gameplay identity and if you want to go extra sweaty you can play all the characters as once..
song of roland and the mahabarada conditioned me that people can have dying chapters where their brains are leaking out, but cool shit needs to happen while people are dying. not a stupid lore dump.
I loved FF16 for the pure spectacle and soundtrack, game was very stylish too, but it is an incredibly flawed game
Ff16 is the worst final fantasy I ever played
16 has so many systems that also feel like they should just never have been added since they are so bare bones. But for me the big thing I just HATED about the writing was when Cid’s daughter appears and how insufferable she is and I go why should I care about this girl besides that she is Cid’s? Well maybe if I went and read all the lore about what happened in the time skips I would know but I refuse to read stuff that should be in the story and not some book.
I’m going to be that guy, but the Eikon Boss fights were the worst part of 16 alongside the writing XD
I liked yotsuyu 😢
They lore dump so much in rhe last chapter that it made no sense. Ultima looks good but shit he is boring
I think the overall writing of 16 is good but the dialogue writing is bad. It felt like Joshua was there just to expo dump sometimes but for me that didn’t take much away from it. Granted I had finish 15 prior which is dogshit so.
Who did exposition worse. FF16 lore dumping before death or SAO lore dumping everytime theyre in a cafe?
I tried the FF16 demo. The world map is like a mobile game. I actually played the game for like 10 minutes out of like 2 hours. The progression is a joke. The exploration and loot is shallow. I was greatful for the demo. I definitely will not buy this game.
I think ff16s pacing issues dive deeper than just it’s writing. The writing IS ass, don’t get me wrong, However what turned me off of it was the bossfights. They felt so long and drawn out that I just got bored with it. I had never felt like a cinematic bossfight was added to pad run time until i got to bahamut in ff16.
When the combat is quick, snappy, and I get to do cool combos against trash mobs, the game is fantastic. The moment people start to open their mouths or an important fight is happening, I just lose interest.
you can have an opinion, but if you have to claim “if you like [think you dislike] then you’re wrong” then you’re just a bitch who can’t handle people having a different opinion on a GAME, honestly. Denying other people a different opinion than your own on a fucking video game just SCREAMS insecurity and projection with your own opinion. I can respect someone disliking a game I like; but I will never respect someone acting like I’m not allowed to like it if they didn’t.
I’ve been saying Yoshi P needs to stick with XIV and not take on another mainline title, he absolutely regurgitated the worst parts of it onto XVI
😂😂😂 he ain’t wrong about that dying lore dump. That’s hilarious. Like, you’re still alive and talking when you’re bleeding. 😂😂
I’m gonna be honest I truly didn’t even know ff16 existed until now it completely flew over my head
Yeah, Final Fantasy 16 was my second ever Final Fantasy game, and it was definitely not disappointing to me at the time, and still think its a great game. After playing more FF games, I think the Final Fantasy series are filled with so much peak, that the less than stellar titles stuck out like a sore thumb.
I’m playing ff16 for the first time right now and I just beat Garuda… Watching this was a mistake haha
I had a great time with FF16 in terms of characters and the general lore behind the world but the writing and combat are what drag it down for me. I would love to see this game get the Persona treatment and get a re-release later with better dialogue and more in-depth combat.
I never played FF16 because it’s missing that Final Fantasy whimsy we usually get. It seems so one note. It’s all dark and no light. It seemed insufferable just from the trailers and art alone. So, I never played it.
i stoped playing becuse of too much talking
I played FF14 (and 11, best MMO ever) for a very long time and I have to agree with the skippable dialogs and forgettable bosses.
SE needs to step up.
ff16 is objectively a good videogame, it simply isn’t a good final fantasy
I don’t think you like Final Fantasy games bro , they are both amazing. 9 and 10 are always gonna be the best but these are good games man. I’m sorry you can’t be pleased.
I enjoyed the story and pacing in FF16, but hated the simplistic and repetitive combat.
The two biggest issues with 16 are that the pacing sucks which kills any potential there was in the story, ruining nearly all of your interest. And the second is that the gameplay is way too easy and the bosses are designed for an MMO, not for a single player game.
Controlling Clive feels great, he controls well and plays well, but the enemies are so stupid and useless that there’s no challenge and the gameplay gets boring fast as a result.
The dialogue sucks but that can be compensated for a bit if the pacing wasn’t so awful. Unfortunately, the bad pacing just heightens how terrible the dialogue is. Square needs to go back to basics and remember the rule is “Show, don’t tell.”
The best thing about 16 is the combat system, which sadly is wasted on the rest of the game. Halfway through i just spammed x to get through exposition to get back to combat.
Honestly the first like 6 hours or so of the game are probably its strongest moments imo.
I’m sorry, but Joshua, along with most of the supporting cast we’re useless when it came to the story. The amount of times Jill got kidnapped is unreal. Joshua, for all the hype he tried to say they could finish their quest together without relying on Ifrit was a bust. Dion dead, Joshua dead.
Cid’s relationship with Benedikta, and Cids past in general was wasted on his death. Starting to notice Square just love killing off their characters as of late for no reason. Lol
It’s so refreshing to have a fellow FF fan finally have the same opinions as myself. RESPECT TO YOU SIR! 🙏
Im playing 16 now and I am loving the journey
Omg did I play this entire game and then totally forget about it? Is the dudes name clyde?
Square executed poorly for ff16. They should have done more beautifully.
I just remember feeling disappointed at the end FF16. I thought Clive was going to turn the villain’s scheme around and resurrect all the characters we’d lost along the way. Instead, I got the ending to FF15. Because of that I’ve never bought the DLC or replayed the main game. While Expedition 33 did this well, overall I dislike playing a dead man walking.
“There’s swearing, there’s drinking, there’s smoking…”
There was all that in Final Fantasy VII too. The original Final Fantasy VII, just not the remake.
My problem with FF16 is, it’s a video game that should have been a movie or TV show, exactly like Xenosaga (yeah I put that in here), extremely bloated dialogue and no real gameplay
I seen a few shorts from you and yet i totally agree with all or almost everything you mentioned.
Yeah. writing not that great. I give story 7 but dialog I give it 5.
I was not interest until I heard the music. its the best part of the game. I don’t know who Soken is before I played this game.
Ff has just gotten so terrible after 10. Even the remakes are so bad. Expedition 33 puts even 10 in its rear view mirror and I loved 10. But FF needs a serious rework at this point
Idk if i hated the Joshua death scene in 16 still got decent emotion out of me. But i will agree FF16 kryptonite is its pacing especially in the 2nd half. I would rather the gane had been like 20ish hours instead of 50 because an action game of that style can only be so interesting for sonlong with allowing me to say swap to play as Jill or something to change it up ecery now and again
Im so glad I didnt buy 16… ive played every numbered final fantasy but just couldnt bear it after 13 and 15
idk I liked FF16 in my top FFs
as someone who has never played a Final fantasy game.
can you reccommend it? im a bit on the fense about it because i hear stuff like this often, but it mostly sounds like it comes from the viewpoint of the fans, and not someone who went in blind.
Edit: or is it just not a enjoyable game?
This video spoiled the ending of 16 for me, but I don’t even care because I couldn’t stay with it.
One type of writing style that I absolutely cannot stand is: when a game or any story really, makes the player think a character has died… only to find out that the character didn’t die… they somehow miraculously survived! only to then have them actually die for real at the end of the story is just so lame and anticlimactic. It’s like; you already had me depressed and reflect once, I’m not emotionally invested to do it a second time. Especially if in the story, their life and actions, impact on the pacing and narrative didn’t hold the same emotional investment or value as their “death ”… why should I care more now? not good storytelling.
I defend ff16 writing for the sole fact that its better than 15 and 13. Doesnt mean its great or consistent, but when u experience trauma, u welcome its absence.
the writing the pacing and some of the sidequest are bad but everything else was fantastic imo
Dude what the hell with the other games spoilers
glad you added from stormblood. was about to say “that’s a weird way of saying Ranjeet”
You cook too “well done” for me to give FF16 a try..XD
The biggest problem for me is the spam combat system, missing party members, no elemental weaknesses, no support spells, no tactics, the linear level design, the dull sidequests, missing summons.. the Kaiju battles werent for me.. just brainless
FF16 was so boring, I recommended my friend just to watch the Eikon battles on YouTube
Oh boy 🙄
Saying less always carries more weight in those situations. Thats why Ex33 did it so perfectly with “I’m here”. It carries multiple layers of symbolic meaning while also having esoteric, gnostic, existential meaning. The list goes on and on.
I’m not sure if this is FFXIV slander or not lmao
And the worst part is…the combat is 2x more flawed
I have spent nearly 300 hours on this game, because I can’t get over how amazing it is. The only thing that is disappointing about FF16 is that a lot of people are disappointed with it. This game made me a true Final Fantasy fan.
I liked stormblood lol 😂
I personally loved 16 lol. Also a big fan of 7. I like the remakes of 7 but I don’t know about the added characters. Wish they would have stayed more true to the original.
Cid carried the game for me after his death the game got extremely boring dialog wise.
I liked 16
Though as somebody who recently finished 16 including dlc for stream. It was incredible, ofc expedition is better but 16 is great, pacing a bit all over the place but the story was excellent 🤷
What about the ost and voice cast in 16?
Me when the demon of awful takes invades my body:
I’m so glad someone else was driven up the wall by the dialogue.
E33 is shit
The intro to FF16 was great (clive as a teen). The setup was great, but everything after that went downhill.
Nah this is real sheet. Someone need to spoke and thx for telling this. I love ff games but the dialogue can be sometimes annoying
Hey Final Fantasy, 14 was really good. I don’t know anybody who has a problem with the dialogue with it. It’s very storage driven at least when I last played maybe it’s changed now. But I don’t like the whole medieval fantasy thing every fantasy does that now it’s kind of getting saturated and boring. Like change the setting a little bit.
I agree. They dumbed down ff16 so much, too. Only like 6 potions
16, remake, and rebirth all had a ridiculous amount of bloat but atleast the ff16 combat was fun.
You’re right. Game went downhill after Cid died. But my thing is even though it’s a FF game and I know the protagonist almost always dies at the end, I was still pissed when it happened. I didn’t cry, I wasn’t sad. I was pissed like I’d been cheated. They put us through all that muck, the least they could have done was some small sliver of a happy ending.
15 was better. There was character growth, there was brotherhood, the scene with lunafreya makes me cry like a baby every single time I see it. And even though it’s very clear what is going to happen to Noctis, I didn’t deal so absolutely cheated like I did in 16.
The trailer alone got me to buy a PS5. It looked like a Game of Thrones version of FF. I was so sure Square Enix were on to something. Such a pity they got cold feet.
Stranger In Paradise did a better job is more fun and still fast paced and has a better story; even if it’s a looter and looks like a PS3 game sometimes. 16 is what this guy said. Cool on paper, bland af. And is a huge downgrade from 15 (which I loved, but understand why people don’t love). Bootleg Devil May Cry with lame story. Monsters designs and visuals are amazing. Yet, Everybody but Clive look boring…. I like dark edgy fantasy, but this was a bummer
Definitely a hot take but everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
you have to be the most insufferable person I’ve ever seen
Dude…ff16 was very good…very very good.
Boss fight were awasome, the gameplay was awasome, characters were incredible, the story was huge.
Don’t consider your personal opinion a fact.
FF16, Fuck…. jk aside The 1st Act of 16 Was so fckin amazing, the Eikon battle, the QTE fights and mid cutscenes were great. Then it falls off, it stops doing any of those mid cutscene fights and becomes an rpg/mmo with fetch quests. What really did it for me was how much they nerfed Jill… like she can’t even get her own revenge without having Clive save her. I was screaming she has SHIVA who was fighting Titan! When did she get sooo weakkkk.
i disagree. ff16 is great. but clair obscure is so mutch beter
I have to agree, the cutscenes are way too long and too much exposition, I actually fell asleep during a sidequest with Clive’s younger brother because my mind was so tired. In my opinion, they should have copied Devil May Cry storing telling since they more or less copied the fighting style of Devil May Cry.
Was i the only one that felt like when the bros reunited it was so lame, is like clive wasn’t even surprised that his bro was alive, they just kept it rolling like nothing happend such a trash game
If 16 has better combat it would be good.
I got hooked with expedition 33 right away and played 93 hours for 100% completion. Ive tried to start ff16 3x and cant get past the first 3 hrs.
I like FF16, I understand the cons of the game. But I had a lot of fun playing it
If FF16 was like COE33 I’d be playing it obsessively
Agree, cheap writing, cheap acting…
the realest flaw of ff16 was that it was titled final fantasy. it was a great game but it did not fit the brand hence the expectations are out of place. the story and turn based combat is FF’s heart and core
Hmmmm wait. It definitely has flaws – a lot even. So basically, you’re saying that some of your viewers and fans’ perceptions are incorrect? Say I love it so much – what I feel is wrong? And basically, you know writing better? Based on what you said though 🫨☺️
My usual test is “would I like this if it didn’t have the final fantasy tag on it” and the answer seems to be no more often than not nowadays
I totally disagree. FF16 is amazing, the only issue is the open world and side content is lazy. The story path of the game is some of final fantasy’s best work
What? You don’t like it when Clive scream “I’M GONNA FINAL ALL OVER YOUR FANTASY… 16 TIMES!!”?!
I will say I love Rebirth’s combat
Good story need good storytelling. FFXVI had a potentially good story, but the storytelling is so terrible that makes the story bad.
I don’t know…I liked FF16, I even liked the story. I disliked FFX, it is not bad but I never got into it and all of the Lightning ones? God I wished I never payed for them. Maybe I am out of the conversation but I played EVERY Final Fantasy and I have to disagree here with 16
16’s writing is still better than 15’s and 13’s. Not that it’s a big bar to pass.
As much as I enjoyed FF16 for personal reason, writing was never one of them xD
Joshua’s aparent death scene gave me PTSD from Dean’s final dragged out death scene in the Supernatural series finale
I wish FFXVI was better. I have bought every FF CE but now after 15 and 16. I will just buy the regular edition and not day 1. I’ve lost hope with FF.
Brother you look and sound like markiplier are you he brother😅
No wonder why final fantasy 16 didn’t get nominated for game of the year.
When I think about it, yeah he’s right.
Clive and Cid are the only two characters in FFXVI I could connect to.
I can’t even remember the names of others characters, barely Joshua and Ultimalus.
i was all kinds of hyped up for 16 cause of how dark and gritty it was. Weirdly enough some of the side quests had better pacing and writing than the mainline story. Thinking back on it, it was VERY bloated even in the main questline, even if i enjoyed it at the time. Though there were some scenes that got a genuine emotional reaction at me. Especially the very end. I wanted a HAPPY ending and i DID NOT get one….
Agree 16 felt so awful though not as god awful as 15😊
I do like the villain Ultima. He’s like the creator realizing a bunch of ants gain how to think independently. So Ultima does a 30 year crashout in trying to kill the land lol
Jeez this makes me feel absolutely horrible for loving ff16-
Know it wasent intentional tho! Love your content!
I knew there was a reason I couldn’t get back into FFXVI after the first ‘Eikon brawl’. I had just retraced half of my least favorite expansion in FFXIV (Until Dawntrail). I knew Benedicta was familiar. But as soon as you said “Yotsuyu” Everything clicked, and I realized why it all felt so… ’empty.’
I happen to be a gamer who can excuse graphics, world-building… Just about everything. But what I struggle to tolerate, is completely wasted writing.
Nier Automata spoiler incoming if anyone wants a warning.))
In so many games, the writing feels like a battle of wits to me. Nier Automata for example. I spent almost the entire game goign through scenarios that were hinted, and even the simple ‘logistics’ of what would be done with YorHa should they win and humans and retake Earth. And when I got my answer, I was both excited because I was right, and infuriated by how it felt in my own mind ingrateful and genocidal to create something to fight and take back your home… Then just cruelly dispose of them.
A good story tells what’s happening.
A great story makes you ask questions.
An incredible story will make you want to “Be right.”
Ff16 did get some emotional reaction from me in that final scene. Mainly beacause of visual memories shown. But it felt forced and crammed down my throat. Like the story focus was on other things and then made sure at the end you really remembered the relationship dynamic so you really had to het the scripted emotional reaction from it.
Ff14 Yotsuyu in SB was bad writing, but in the patches the story did get better for me in exploring her background. But only the background and the ending payoff. Getting there was a contrived bloated soap opera mess.
someone died in FF16? I really dont remember. I beat the game in 3 days on release. Not a memorable game what so ever.
The real tragedy in 16 was what they did to shiva
Thank God it’s not just me. I could not get that far in xvi. I found it very boring.
That’s why EVERYBODY on Reddit that said that Final Fantasy XVI was their game of the year in 2023(I still remember it to this day, sooooo many people), I still look at the moment and see them as crazy. I never played Final Fantasy XVI, but I saw one of my favorite YouTubers play through it for 10+ hours and it was soooooo bad. It had a few highs, but so many ridiculous lows. I still cringe remembering the ending. I bet Ben Starr voice acting at the end of Final Fantasy XVI felt exactly how the whole cast of Game of Thrones felt when they were first reading over and then acting out the seventh and eighth seasons
He just knew that as long as he loredumps he’ll stay alive. He wanted Clive to get him help but Clive didn’t realised that
P.s. If this comment and similar from me were posted a bunch of times then sorry. Youtube wasn’t posting it and i had to write it a bunch of times before it happened. Honestly too much effort for such stupid joke but whatever
when Sebb parodied the death scene from FFXVI I got flashbacks from the movie Mask with Jim Carrey
Just going to announce I just beat Simon in clair obscur, I’m still shaking
Ff16 formula:
1. Dungeon 1 + Boss
2. Exploration + Save Martha
3. Dungeon 2 + Dungeon 3 + Eikon Battle
Repeat it for 6+ times.
Oh, side quests:
– Help Martha
– Clive: Say that again!!!
FF17 is thing goes worst : Oh no ! Here comes the Deux Ex Machina Lore Dumping everything you need and plot armoring the hero from death to vanquish any credibility left, but look, a chocobo ! so it IS an FF, your argument is invalid.
I am just after titan and so far, for me anyways, the lack of a level up system hurts my soul. Other than that it has been pretty amazing so far.
Again vocal majority and reviewers: Best FF game for some time! Yay!!Japan pays well 😉
Once again bro speaks the truth. Keep that gaming wisdom coming my friend!
I literally skipped all of the talking in 16 because it was so long….Aside from the beginning I don’t know the story at all and I beat the game
I’m by all means no veteran FF fan, I’ve only played 15, 16, 10, and the newer remakes of FF7, but my worst complaint about 16 is the pacing. The side quests are travel to the other side of the world and grab a flower for me. The combat is okay, but I’ve had more playing God of War than FF16.
A lot of good points
I really enjoyed 16. To be fair was the first ff game i played
I just enjoy FF16 for how stupidly fun it is
The problem started with FF15. After that every project goes downhill. 15 is when they started trying to appeal to western gamers. Minimal costume design. Boyband group. Emo protagonist. What they didn’t realize is that western gamers already invested with old style FF games more than the new one. Is not just the writing. The plot and storyline is also dumb. And they injected that dumbness to FF7 rebirth. 16 is they trying to challenge the Dark Soul dark story. But it came out as stupid for the most part. They stick to the same fail formula and surprising not realizing what makes SquareEnix great.
Another thing that kinda rubbed me the wrong way was the exploration. While the areas we got were visually interesting graphically, it kinda missed the mark on Final Fantasy staples. Where were the towns, cities, caves, etc? I know we can go to a couple towns but those were kinda lifeless. Just side-quest dumps with 99% of the NPCs you couldn’t interact with.
I felt insulted by the writing from about the halfway point and was bored by almost everything else but I chose to stick around because, yanno, I’d made the mistake of paying for the shit, after all.
The Final Fantasy line made me so fucking mad. In the middle of a Who Gives A Shit final act I just wanted to get over with, throwing that line in? Fuck me I hate XVI. So shit.
Cid fucking rules in this game though. Best character by far. Ralph Ineson CRUSHES
Omg you just don’t understand, Seb! If only we had gotten a Longer monologue, good thing all that lore didn’t come BEFORE the death scene!!! 🙃
Graphics are bad tbh.. hoped it was better.. senua had way better graphics imo. And better story.. i deleted the game after 1 hr.. it is that boring..
Damn I have to get these guys out of my algorithm. Me and a buddy played 16 last year and loved it so much never knew it had so many critics. Also the if you dont agree with this anything you say is invalid strat you got going really just makes you sound like a hater, especially when the topic is based in opinion not fact.
This is what I felt with Jessie’s death in FF7 remake. The scene was SO LOOONG. It took the tragedy away and became so ridiculous.
Yeah the combat was fine in 16. The highs were pretty good. But the lows of the game brought it down. I hated that I kept needing to move like 300m to find something. Then another 300m to find another thing. Then go back to the origin. It was so annoying. It got to the point that I wasn’t interested in playing and had to push through.
16 gets like 90% the way there. Is it as good as the old games? No, but then again what is?
While I can agree that ff16 was promising but fell flat on its face, I never even bought it because I watched my brother play it and what I did see of 16 was a big nope, and I can agree ff14 does have bloated dialog it’s not as bad as your ripping into it saying ff14 isn’t good is a horrible hot take, the first time I can’t agree with you, but I also respect that you don’t like it many don’t and many do that’s completely fine.
16 for the furst 3/4 of the game is sooo good only for ulitma to ruin it barabus shoukd have been the main villian
You can’t defend the gameplay either.
It’s soooo bad
the bloated Dialog is not something out of FFXIV, bloated dialog and hours of exposition have been the main ingridient for all JRPGs, if you play some western ones you might see this but not as much.
JRPGs have always been like this and now people are getting tired of it because we dont have as much time as we used to in the past, we could spend an entire summer playing any FF without complaining about this but unfortunately the writting from back then doesnt work now.
XIV gets an excuse for being an MMO and MMOs have always had terrible paces but at this point I skip any non voice dialog because I know they are going to say Nothing at all
16 is just great boss fights with great graphics but the story is trash
ff16 was long, well made, and fantastic cinematic cutscene.
story: meh
mechanics: not bad but not good
boss fights: awesome
sidequests: tedious
characters: hit or miss
7/10
I think I liked the opening/mid parts of Rebirth a lot more than he did. I also had a lower attachment to the original 7 than most as Suikoden was my series at that time.
I agree with pretty much the whole take. I been waiting for shit I don’t want to count but since 10 to get the FF series to hit like it once did.
Square has been a company that seems to try to do good, but just keeps finding ways to fumble it. I doubt they will really look at E33 and see what they did so right that they keep doing sooo wrong. Each FF has things you can love but it’s under so much shit. I am happy they keep trying new things but most of it is bad things over and over 😅😅.
Atleast some devs are stepping in to say hey look this worked go back to this. It can still work, and you can still refine it more.
I stopped playing 16 becasue of the endless borning mandatory side quests it was just the same every time do some MSQ than have side quest for upgrades. your right it felt like dawntrail type of writing and awful pacing.
I agree with you on a lot of things, but I’m gonna have to respectfully disagree with you on this video, I love FF 16. Is it my favorite, that’s hard to say, but it’s definitely up there. I had been waiting on an M rated mainline FF game my entire teenage and adult life. It felt like I was playing a game in the vain of some of my absolute favorite fantasy authors.
XVI is kinda good before titan fights, but after titan fight it goes down so bad
When the characters looks interesting on paper but the writing is too horrendous that it made them looks sad to be in the game 💀
Aeris dying in the OG FF7 was epic gut wrenching no bloated dialogue or inappropriately placed flashback scene just a meat and bones tragic moment that sat with you for days. My niece cried at this scene 5 years later when she played it.
Felt like that for 15 as well. It’s like the writers never took an actual road trip or has no actual siblings, brothers or close friends. Like they were almost there and just shat the bed with sloppy relationships and motivation.
FF16 wanted to be so much and ended up being way too little for my taste. Exploration didn’t feel rewarding. Everything felt empty and ended like a fluke. I looooved benedikta’s story though. I only played the beginning of ffxiv so idk about the similarities with it’s storyline. But I clearly couldn’t finish the game because the story felt like it couldn’t really go all out on its promises.
Sorry you feel that way. I get the hate but it’s now one of my favorite FF games and Clive is arguably my favorite FF protagonist. The dude has a wolf(I love wolves!) and can turn into a FREAKING KAIJU and has one of the best uncles ever. I love Jill and Cid. The soundtrack is godlike.
Foe the last half of 16 i just spammed X through all the dialogue. The game would just never end.
I skip so much now in games cause the writing or voice acting is just takes forever, and they repeat themselves, like wtf, you can cut out more than half the lines cause the keep reiterating the same talking point.
Soap death scene in Modern Warfare 3 2011 is a devastating one too. Soap just said 3 words: Makarov knows Yuri.
I honestly haven’t even bothered to play a Final Fantasy (other than Renake and Rebirth) since FFXIII. They’ve just been so bad. When I wanna play FF I just replay a GOOD game from the old FF catalog. 😂 Expedition 33 is the best game I’ve played in years ❤
Comparing to the tasteful implementation in expedition might make it seem cheesy but 16 was one of my favorite stories in an ff game. I’ve played most of them and I play them for the story so I liked it.
The very beginning or the story is good, with decent writing. But it doesn’t last. By the end of the game i was skipping every dialog I could, and watching a show during cutscenes.
Personally i felt i cared about the characters enough that i enjoyed most of it.
The massive amount of side quests near the end of the game just kinda made everything take so long, atleast they were probably the best ones in the game but damn.
The best part of 16 to me was its cast but they didnt get much of a chance to shine since the world was so depressive and bleak that they had nothing else to express.
I want to get more of clive and its sad that we probably wont
So I’m currently playing through ff16 and I just recently did the titan boss with some friends and we started to realize how despite being cinematic a lot of the boss fights are pretty lackluster content wise and are more just cinematic than anything else.
Also I think I can understand why cid was killed off so early but I think it might hurt the story more than help.
Also the villains so far have no real grasp on me like some of the older ff games so that’s another negative for me.
Still think the game is alright maybe an 8/10 for right now is how I would rate it, but that’s being generous. I do really like the setting and lore for the game so far though and the concept itself
16 is my guilty pleasure, I love it, because it helped me through a very hard time of life. But I know that it is not a good game.
Totally agree. The story is sooo poorly written is almost unbelievable that this is a FF game. Totally boring.
“… like Alphanaud in Real Reborn” is a line I will keep in my pocket from now on
To be fair… they made a franchise that like 20 ga,es long. No shit it’s gonna be hella reused
“Clive… I’m dying. You might need to pull up a chair for this one “
I fell asleep while playing FF16 cuz it’s so boring 😢
Last good Final Fantasy game was FF X for me. Remake, Rebirth and FF XVI is trash for me.
Square destroyed this great series 🫣
FF16 had its problems but at least it’s not Rebirth 😂 Nothing is going to be as bad as climbing Ubisoft towers, unrewarding exploration, multiverse timeline bs and let’s not talk about how much they mess up the death at the end. FF16 may of had some really bad design choices but not as bad as that lol.
What I’ve noticed as a casual ff fan, is they make such impressive set pieces for cutscenes with kinda “meh” gameplay. I got so psyched for FFXV with it’s set pieces, and it just turned out to be an okay game.
I loved FFXVI all the way through the demo. If I could go back in time, I would have ended it there. I can’t bring myself to finish the game, it was so unnecessarily long and boring. Which is weird – it’s the most action oriented one.
This is one of the videos and takes that we 100% agree Sebby.. 👌👌
Sorry, nope. 16 is my second favorite of all-time.
I can agree on some of these points, but having gone into the game with no expectations and not a lot of experience with having played FF games, this game did an amazing job immersing me into the world and I fell deeply in love with the grand story. One of my favs.
I remember being pretty hyped for Final Fantasy XIII. I mean there had really only been one bad Final Fantasy game up until then and it was a sequel so it didn’t really count. That was 19 years after the first FF release and it’s been 16 years since then. Half of this series’ history has been sparse releases of shit games. When are we gonna just give up on it?
But.. but.. combat is good
LOL THANK YOU FOR TELLING THIS. Lot of conversation in (even in FF14) can be send as Email. As much as interesting Lore can be getting explained WHOLE LORE in middle of cutscene is quite phase killing. I’m not asking Dark Soul version of cut scene just scene not Lore dump. Ow and some Cutscene (Like Yotsuyu) MC can INTERFERES OR DO SOMETHING but we feel like more of watcher. In Expedition 33 we know Gustav killed but with how scene play out we know we can’t interfere BECAUSE IT HAPPEN TO FAST and not MC just standing there
Another thing that irked me in 16 was no one seemed to really give a shit about Clive upending every kingdoms crystal. The world itself barely cared, Even when him and Titan basically tore the world in half, Clive had to go around the hideout and let everyone know their most traumatizing enemy was slain, like he was asking if they wanted anything from the shop. (Cornetto) By the time I reached Bahamut the spectacle didnt even mean anything of substance and I was frustrated more than awed by what was going on. Game peaked at demo story wise but it truly died with Cid.
Amen! And plus to all that: generic orchestra music you forgot in 5 min, while the main battle theme sounds like a remix of the ff8 battle theme 😂
Thr world is empty and there’s nothing to explore or to interact with. Repetitive character animations. Story is told through walls of text and diagrams. Wtf, i have to look up myself what the relationship between two brothers is and what they think of each other? such bs. Exp33 was able to tell you a complex story without an ingame Wikipedia
Yea… Basically after Cids death everything went bad. Especially when politics and slavery and medieval theme started to be pointless because “god” lol. In the end of the day everything was meaningless. Except the conflict between Ultima and Clive… Meh
FF16 was basically made for FF14 players, so all of that checks out.
😂😂😂😂😂😂 modern ff games have made u so upset I understand 13 n 15 had me feel like the magic was gone to
16 has a great introduction but I feel it falls off stage minute cid dies he really was carrying that narrative more than Clive was
Bro i am right there with you on xvi i so badly wanted to like 16. The characters are boring and the story is worse.
The OST is just peak though
I liked 16 though…
Iunno. I found Cid to be formulaic, lame and a near exact copy of Balthier from 12. To me Gav was the best character followed by the dog/wolf. They were unironically the only characters with any interesting elements in their presentation and personality. I think the fans are conditioned to look at cid as the cool guy and ignore how generic he is. Same with Dion. He is a typical tragic hero. He is basically leo from ff6 lol
The swearing, “dark themes” and “maturity” added absolutely nothing other than to make some grown men feel less dorky than they are. The story was no darker than ff6 or ff9 but the characters in those games werent brooding and annoying. Clive is generic and Jill is the exact same character as Clive and Joshua. Jill could be removed entirely and the story would play out exactly the same way
Clive. My uncle is named Clive. It’s not a main character name. I was so bored, button mashing combat too. I regret buying it.
I found FFXVI to be very very mediocre for a Final Fantasy game, but my main problem with it were the side quests. I felt that their only purpose was to waste your time…run from A to B, from B to A and just in case do it again and again…I was so annoyed of this, I almost stopped playing FFXVI. The addition of „Monster Hunting“ was pretty lazy too in my opinion. I miss the old times where you actually had to do „great things“ to fight „great monsters“.
If peter took 3 days to turn into dust after Thanos snapped
How are you able to lower your voices by two octaves when you go in your voice acting mode? I wanna learn that skill too!
his fucking RIGHT goddamit
HAHAHAHA LMAO TRUE
For me this Serie of FF wasn’t boring I enjoyed playing so much ❤
FFIX is always gonna be my favourite, I just love it. Everything about it rocks
I thought the first half was great. I was invested. I don’t remember where I started getting bored
Mid quest? After cid death?
I don’t remember what was where lol
Also Bahamut fight was bullshit.
Fuck instakill moves.
enjoyed pretty much all Final Fantasy games
but with 16 i lost interest with the demo
The only writing I will defend in 16 is Cid’s banter
Nah see the matrix hit me too hard. My daughter’s name is Sophie my wife is named Kathryn and I’m 32 years old so this game got harder than it had any business to
Wow!!! I absolutely love and agree with this!!!! Expedition 33 is such an amazing game! And unfortunately ff16’s story is TERRIBLE, but I did enjoy playing the game. I do enjoy devil may cry, so it was instantly appealing to me. We do deserve a WAY better Final Fantasy though, mmmmmaybe 17 😅
At keast yu r been honest. There is somewhat bad writing in it.. but i did love the game. At least it was better than 15. 😅.
You could already tell from the papers that it will be boring. Or rather a medicore action game which only goal it is to appeal a western audience. You could tell from the trailers. And no one who wants to play Final Fantasy wants to play something like that as a Final Fantasy. That’s why the sales were so poor.
Look at it like this: Final Fantasy XVI is the most “not Final Fantasy” Final Fantasy. Where as Expedition 33 is the most “Final Fantasy” not Final Fantasy.
Gonna be honest, I’m a guy who likes ff16, but I also agree with everything you said there. One thing I gotta say about the dialogues is that I was able to tolerate them, not because I thought they were fine (they are obviously not), but because I went into the game with the mindset that it’s a Japanese game, and let’s be honest, Japanese games pretty much never have good dialogues
Reminds me of FF15. You deep dive the lore to 15 and it is amazing. The amount of effort that went into the lore could have made this the best game in the franchise, honestly.
FF16 was the biggest disappointment and the worst FF imo.
I uninstalled FFXVI after 5 hours and have problems finishing Rebirth. FFX was last good Final Fantasy game for me.
Also the FF14 side quests and Ulitma was so boring esp. after Ardyn and Emet.
The best moment in 16 is a side mission with cruel commentary on slaves where there’s a dogs that the owners feed slaves to it’s all fucked up. Even when it’s good it’s rough.
I love XVI to bits but I wholeheartedly agree with the writing. I enjoyed the Eikon fights due to the grand spectacle it delivered and the music is absolutely insane, definitely rate it highly along with the other FFs in the franchise. But yeah, writing was mid af but it was still an enjoyable game personally.
I’m going to be a bit bias. But what makes games like FF9 and Nier great dark series is the balance of funny and depressing tones and scenes.
It’s that shift in tone that makes the dark parts hit harder. Because if you keep hitting someone with negative emotions, they become desensitized by it.
Idk man it’s so good and so bad at the same time, Moments Like when Clive accepts his faith are Moments that give me goosbumps everytime. But man everything you describe is True as well
Me: “should I play 16?”
*watches this*
i wanted to try ff 16 for ben starr cuz i played khazan them expedition 33 but i legit deleted the game the second i heard « YOU COCK »💀
I honesly had enough after playing XV. All that waiting since its original announcement as 13 Versus just left a bad taste
After Cid was gone game got boring 😢
“I’m here”
“I know”
Hits like in Star Wars when Solo was being put in carbonite
“I love you”
“I know”
FF16 committed the worst crime in videogames…..it was BORING. Boring as fuck.
I remember hearing so many great things about FF16 and I finally got to play it myself and just found myself bored most of the time.
yeah 16 is so bad. in fact 14 is good only because of Ishikawa
The writing of Ff16 is good. But “Good”, in terms of how we began to value stories of the Final Fantasy series over the years, is basically on the level of “mid” as the kids these days say.
I’ll explain:
Over the years, we always expect future FFs to surpass the previous ones and in many cases, these games do succeed on that front. But when the series started to fall, we began to expect it to rise higher and higher than we could ever expect and we’ve created this astronomically high expectations of FF games. And you can’t blame us for that. That’s normal for us fans. It’s ultimately business greed that ruined the FF series and the Game Industry as a whole.
But I do believe that FF16 is the FFIX of this era of games solely because it returned back to Medieval Fantasy. Like back then in the 90s, Square is moving to a more advanced civilization genre for FF. But Sakaguchi held back the progression to that by returning it to its true identity… Medieval Fantasy.
Since then, the FF series after it saw some return to it’s roots. FFX is a bit more traditional even though the culture is more Asian, XI and XII were more medieval Fantasy. XIII is sci-fi, XIV is Medieval Fantasy again, XV is modern, XVI is Medieval again. Out of all FFs post X, only 2 games were completely more modern and sci-fi.
Without Sakaguchi trying to tie it down to it’s roots, FF would’ve moved further away from it and it would be even more unrecognizable than it is today.
All this is to say that although XVI isn’t as good as we want it to be, it has its merits. Writing is good, but not astromically game changing, and the genre went back to its roots. Which is great. A numbered title FF should never be ashamed to go back to its roots and innovate on it as that is what keeps its identity intact.
Also bring back Yoshinori Kitase as director PLEASE. This guy has been Sakaguchi’s protege and even though his vision is different from Sakaguchi’s, his FF games still feel like FF. VII, VIII, and X still feel like FF even though the genres aren’t specifically “Medieval Fantasy”. So please bring Kitase back
Ah, the opera approach. “I’m mortally wounded, allow me to sing my 8 minute aria.”
I agree with some of your Remake/rebirth criticisms, but i still love them. Theyre amazing. They didnt ruin anything.
And 16 is great. Sorry. Your opinion is bad lol. I also long for a return to old school FF, but it doesnt mean newer ones are terrible.
Also Yotsuyu opinion is a crazy hot take lol. A lot to hate about that xpac but Yotsuyu??
Ff16 is my favorite final fantasy, 15 is a close second
Square enix should start thinking of subsidizing their FF game to Sandfall. Ez win, EZ money.
So when it comes to the dialog in ff16, it seems to be taking the ff13 approach of so much wtf that it just pulls you out of the story.
Ff16 was epic expedition 33 was epic. Totally different types of epics I like both.
Cid was fire. That’s all I will say.
Honestly, they had everything nailed for the most part except for the unnecessary dialogue especially during Joshua’s death. That should’ve been an earlier revelation before that fight and not when someone is dying. It diminishes the death as a whole.
I was so mad the moment Cid died, genuinely killed a part of my interest in the plot because the banter was so damn good between both of them despite it being only a few scenes.
Pacing was horrible, if the game kept the pacing from the start of game and progressively worked through things as the story unfolded further, it could’ve done much better job. The DLC’s should have already been in the game prior to release
I like your expedition 33 content but this take on ff16 is a huge L.
I loved 16 but the thing i hated has how bogged down it was my the MMO shit, like the moment i saw that thr quest and confirm prompts were just pulled from 14 i knew we had a problem, i can excuse the bloated dialogue to a point what i cant excuses is the hud being cluttted by like 50 side quests that you cant turn it off
I can’t take anyone who says that “you’re automatically out of the conversation if you think this” seriously and should actually be the one removed the conversation, since this is akin to pretty much plugging your ears and saying, “I can’t hear you, lalalalalala.”
Honestly, Joshua was trying to provide Clive with important information before he died instead of trying to save his strength. It’s a JP trope; it happens in anime and JP media a lot. If you don’t like the writing, then maybe don’t read/watch JP media? I find it funny cause FF has always had a bunch of CS that does exposition dumps…..like a lot, but that didn’t bother him then, just rants about 16 one. >.>
I disagree with you. Ff16 despite some flaws has some of the greatest moments ever in a final fantasy game. The music was S tier, the boss fights were insanely epic “looking at you bahamut” being more geared towards adults was something I throughly enjoyed. Clive is an awesome MC and to this day that ending still sticks with me and me and my friends discuss it. FF16 is in my top 5 and will stay there for a long time.
FF16 is just Game of Thrones story writing xD
I did love FF16, but these criticisms are really valid.
From the looks of it, Joshua really turned into John recap and Bob exposition, fused
Oof. I feel attacked. I actually enjoyed FF16. Im not defending it, but it was alot of fun. I also actually enjoyed the story for the most part.
See, i started on the modern FF formula, so i like it. I loved remake and rebirth a lot. But I’ve also gotten into the older games and love them too. Im happy with both but i really understand the fans who saw something they love slowly morph into a different thing that they may not like at all and that really sucks.
Everyone has different interests, and as a spoiled gamer, i want everyone to have what they love in a game.
I hope with all the praise and love and hype around expedition 33 that we see a newfound and passionate resurgence of the old FF type with modern changes like E33 implemented
Bro I love ff16 then again my first final fantasy was 15 and I cried to that one 😭
That and bringing back his brother destroyed the impact of his death
Remeber ffx yuna : i love you 😂
I’m never going to “defend” FF16 because I completely understand why FF fans wanted something else, hoping for something else. But FF16 is my favourite since X. In part due to my love for DMC style combat, in part due to the voice acting being top notch (despite the exposition dumps). The fact that they literally had 2 exposition NPCs in Harpocrates and Vivian is bonkers to me.
But the over the top DMC/Anime style combat is something that I will always love and Clive looked like a fucking bad ass doing it.
I think FF16 did politics and warfare quite well. Using the eikons as the game’s version of nuclear arsenals really felt amazing. Certain characters like Clive, Cid and Dion were written beautifully. Hugo, Jill and Joshua were written well enough for the purposes they had and I’d even argue that while I hated Ultima he was written well enough. I hated the ending though to the point where I refused to play the dlc after. The open world was amazing but so extremely limited. The combat was awesome especially when I was comparing it to Tales of Arise. It was an amazing journey to fight through but it has almost no replay value sadly.
Even with its poor execution i still managed to enjoy it and loved the ikon battles especially titan lost just hoped that the dialogue and pacing would put me out my misery. If the game had consistently had the quality of the titan lost battle throughout the game it would’ve been a masterpiece.
3rd continent was so hyped then it was an empty wasteland of 3 check points, character side quests at the end of the game were better than the main story which isn’t saying much 😂 I hated the fact that it wasn’t humans vs humans a political conflict like it was advertised but the big evil arriving again, like the game was okay for me just nothing to write home about
I never played 16 but, I don’t mind these spoilers. I will never play it. I just don’t watch ALL your content because I need to beat Expedition 33 first. Thank you though friend for confirming what I feared about 16.
Yeah dying dialogue should be either be short or cut off mid sentence. I am a writer and I have dialogue that sounds like a soliloquy at times and even I would never have a character die with a monologue outside specific circumstances. The rule should be barring life support dying dialogue should be to the point or intentionally cut off before it becomes 5 minute cutscene of dialogue.
16 has the opposite problem oc 13. 13 was 3 games when barely had a reaskn to be 1. And 16s setting could easily make 3 games but they jammed it into 1 and its so bloated and bad its a waste
So you are saying that you start playing a game in 5 mins game you see some group of people who you dont know why they just vanish and a group of 33 years old people are about to do a travel to that giant monolith only to be massacre in their very first step in the land. Next scene the main hero is about to suicide and his ex appears sitting next to him? How he didnt even notice she was there? Most of the dialogues of Gustav and Maelle were annoying they were acted like they were going for a family trip. I played the game and i liked the lore and the gameplay both were refreshing maybe the battles repeat the same pattern with no reason to try new skills or you can solo the game with Maelle at least thats what i did on the new game+. The game was fine a clean 8/10 the dialogues of between the characters and their development was a downside for me. Also about the final conversation i guess that if you were in Clives position that very moment you would tell him something like “Shut da fak up, bitch. You are out of the conversation”. He was dying and coughing blood while he did one last thing for Clive. The dialogues from ffxvi were better than exp33. Both games are great both have theirs ups and downs and also you cant compare those two games. One game has epic eikon fights the other you can finish the game without even try to attack or use any skill in the entire game.
My biggest thing is 16s story is legit just a reskin of 7. This group viewed as “terrorists” actually destroying this thing they think is killing the world. So unoriginal
Just off hearing your takes I’m so damn glad I didn’t waste my time or money on 16 😂
Can I ask did you enjoy X and X2? Personally the story of ffX2 is subjectively one of the greatest things to ever be created.
I loved 16. Clive and company were amazing. The rising tide was an amazing addition to the game. There’s a lot of nuance. It’s not a perfect game but still great.
Thank you. I hated 16. I wanted so badly to love it after the demo, but it was just so. Boring. So fuckin boring. I had to force myself to beat it, and upon completion I don’t think i felt anything other than pleasure I wouldn’t have to play it anymore
I clapped when Clive says, “I am your Final Fantasy” before he fantasied on their final
I wanted to love FFXVI. I played the demo and was very excited to play the rest. It was such a let down. I beat FFXVI and its something I wish I had not done. The story is just a hot mess and the longer it goes, the worse it gets. The “Kaiju” fights were interesting at first but than they became a huge slog and would never end. The music was solid. The combat was okay but very repetitive. The death of Cid was terrible because it got rid of the most likeable character. Jill had such a weak story arc that it made her feel like a waste of space. The end….. The end was just so dumb it blew my mind they would make something that bad.
Hi @Sebbywebz, have you heard of this game called Runa? it’s another indie fantasy turn based game that is being developed by a team in Spain.
When I played FF16 I remember that it just would not end. Like it would be, the final boss is in place A…so you go
To place A and you have a little fight, and then the game just…..carries on until the next boss fight.
I actually got annoyed that the game wouldn’t finish, and it just removed any potential weight those storylines had.
Thought ff16 was fun lol
Gaming being literary is in its infancy at best. Where are these standards and guidelines coming from?
Sure, the dialog is quite verbose, but I don’t mind it too much. My bigger issue is that, as a Final Fantasy game, XVI has a very depressing atmosphere. My party members were quiet when playing the levels (at the beginning, I didn’t even realize they were with me when playing the levels), the colors were muted, it’s abject misery everywhere… I appreciate the story, but it just wasn’t “fun”.
The writing and side quests were so bad… All.the side characters were so bland that you don’t even feel interested or attached to any of their stories. And the cutscenes are so long that you end up wondering why did they not just make a movie instead of making you pmay the game in between.
16 While I loved it, after the end it left me a bit…”hollow” there were some segments where I was forcing myself to focus on the dialogue and every detail now that I think about it, instead of being naturally captivating. my biggest gripe while watching the credit was the bare bones sidequest architecture and gear progression(or the lack there off imo) When I obtained the legendary craftable sword it felt, unrewarding. just better stats after doing repetitive side quest. while I enjoyed them it left me feeling they could had been better. it did felt like i was doing mmo sidequests in a single player rpg…I know yoshiP said he and his fellow JP designers have some trauma with the “J”RPGS. but I feel like he’s taking a compliment as an insult and is wasting the gift he has at his disposal as a Japaneese developer
You need to write an opinion column, my dude. 🤘
If the pacing wasn’t bad and the war dumping wasn’t crazy the story itself isn’t terrible it’s just executed terribly all the politics between the different nations fighting each other happening over time I really enjoyed that I think Clive’s a fine character yeah but they screwed up how they told the story
I’ve actually had a lot of fun playing 16, but I don’t think I’ll ever play it again. The pacing is so bad that any interest you start to gain in the story is immediately lost because the momentum stops and turns into a big open world grind/fetch quest slog. The first (I think it’s 4 main quests) quest until the fight with Garuda as Ifrit is basically non-stop peak IMO, as you’re actually pretty linear focused at that point, so it’s mostly just story.
The story itself definitely has cheesy dialogue, but I think it has legs to hook people and it has really high highs when you get to them, and has interesting enough characters to make you want to experience it more. The whole Eikon thing with the summons is a really cool way to re-invent their usage in the games and also make them feels like how they should. I personally think as a whole, the fight with Bahamut is one of the best boss fights in gaming and gives the feeling that Eikon’s are the real deal. The music, the build-up, just how insane the fight gets, all of it is sick. But then you do all that and then go back to boring fetch grind and poorly paced dialogue.
FFXV was bad on paper and many other things HOWEVER, somehow I felt very attached with the characters, somehow they managed to develop that and as much I consider the game a wasted opportunity, I still care for the characters.
The worst fucking ff game i have ever played, shit was utter TRASH
FF16 make me cry like a Bvich but game itself is pure 7/10.
I can’t believe single player FF got that many boring fetchQuests.
And i never forgive writers how dirty they make Dion story, he survived by hand of Medical Girl(another wasted character) only to be transport to Ultima crystal, they didn’t gave him a chance to reedem himself.
Honestly i felt FF16 should’ve been set in Ivalice ala ffT or 12. The world, backstories, characters, ultima and plot, battles (ifrit vs titan) were really good. The only thing i hate abkut modern ff not being turned based (i feel less invested in the supporting characters) and not having and overworld
Ff16 is great …
I think the dev team just had a hard time separating themselves from their MMO habits. It’s a story for a singleplayer game, they forgot to tone it down in terms of dialogue length, be it in text boxes or cutscenes. I mean, I’m all for reading, but if you wanna do world building through dialogue, sometimes less is more. Writers really overdid it, which is sad for the really cool premise of the game, the atmosphere and tone of the story, it leaned more into this gritty dark, Game of Throne-esk fantasy style (I mean, the GoT inspiration is too obvious), and they wasted many really good moments with over-the-top written dialogue like this.
The first two hours of FF16 were so damn good (except the start with Ifrit x Phoenix fight which was lame), but going hunt for those goblins in the woods was so good, the boss was good, great combat, the dodge was great and then the more powers I unlocked the more boring it got. The one thing I liked was Clive versus that strong guy when he tells him he killed his girl, and the fight was so full of rage, that was good. I came back many times to FF16, but still couldnt finish the game, so I just gave up.
I think the gameplay of 16 has the mmo feel for players who don’t like action games. I think that design was intentional to appease people who only like RPGs. There was a lot of backlash of the action based play style.
“Hey, you know all the worst things about XIV? Yeah! Let’s do ALL of that!”
16 was a fun game, but yeah, the story, particularly the ending, did not sit well with me.
Every time you bring up new ff it can be boiled down to, “You like something i dont like, therefore your opinion is irrelevant.” Jeez man. Can you talk about something without insulting people? I mean seriously i cant look at any of your shorts without being indirectly called an idiot.
You’re not wrong entirely about ff16 btw. It has serious problems. Particularly after cid dies. Pacing for sure. But its writing does have some good ideas.
Waiting for persona fans to accept a similar reality. The dialog could be a million times better but its hollow and shitty for 30% of the stuff youre reading no matter what the topic is. Its just boring and makes you wanna skip everything.
I had fun with 16, but I would never defend it from being called a bad game. It was so bloated, and the ending was criminal. Revealing the whole thing was just a story some kids were reading was abysmal. Not to mention Clive’s ending was bleak, dying on a beach at the end. Also, why are those kids reading a book with sex and swearing? They’re only about 7-8 years old!
The combat was boring and the story was drawn out. It was a chore to finish.
*gasp* How dare you talking shit about Yotsuyu!? :O I think she was a great villain. She steals the spotlight in every scene she’s in and the way they wrapped up her story was fantastic. Come on, we all know that the worst Stormblood villain is her very punchable brother Asahi.
I haven’t even finished FF16, i do plan to finish it but just got boring like you said.
Honestly most of what was said during that death scene should have been said leading up to there.
People these days think dialogue needs volume, but brevity is the soul of wit. Therein lies the answer: they’re trying to write the “excellent RPG story” instead of making sure they’ve written *a* good story.
These shorts make my day
For me, 16 prob is the single tonality throughout the entire game, it’s misery and bleak with no reprieve. Rebirth is the opposite, its going from one carnival to another. Just fun and not being serious. SE needs to improve on their writing and pacing
Best love story in ff games though…
Clive and cid
The other one was shippable , I never cared even though I loved ff love stories
Yeah… I enjoyed ff16 but it’s pacing and dialogue are ass.
Clives big naturals tho ? 😏
Say what you will about the lore dumps in 16, but at the end of the day, they sure are.
Phoenix boy’s death is Kung Pow levels of dragged out.
FF16 CRISIS
The Free demo of the game was more of a spectacle than the paid entire game was garbage.
FF16 is weird. Clive and Jill are so boring. I don’t believe they are in love. So empty, the game is nothing. If Ben Starr wasn’t such a chad, the game would be so forgettable
FF16 sucks!!
Some of my biggest complaints about ff16 was how the world wasnt very interactive like past final fantasies, it had awesome combat and epic eikon moments, but they forgot side activities to do like minigames, maybe being able to swim, ride boats, secret dungeons it wouldve been cool if you could play as joshua during flashbacks and other characters as well instead of just WATCHING cutscenes which the game decided to do frequently, scenes which coudlve been playable were just long cutscenes instead, there shouldve been wars you fought in too, i mean its imitating game of thrones right? And cmon no distinct weather patterns like rain? Things like this. They forgot that final fantasy has to have EVERYTHING and this sadly didnyt quite live up to that, i think ff7 rebirth did a much better job living up to that flaws and all 😅
I promise you. If you play 13 again you will be mind blown
Yeah, I finished ff16 yesterday, but the ending and specially the… “epilogue” just left me cold, to the level that I have access to the dlcs (I’m playing through family sharing, thanks but sry whoever bought everything I guess xd) but the ending killed my interest instantly. Like, sure, the plot is ok and the fighting is fun, but how they present it is weird and the pacing is awful. Was it necessary to dump like 10-20 secondary quests just before the last fight? That, and to leave me without an overview of what Clive sacrificed himself for? Jill and/or Jote could have the heroes’s children, Tarya start something with Gav or whoever else, Terence bringing Medicine Girl to become a nurse for Tarya, someone finding Mid’s squematics, or at least its first part, I don’t know, something about how our sacrifice improved everyone lives. But nope, who cares about your crew, your lover, your brother’s bodyguard/lover(she wished at least). How about a random family that looks like clive, joshua and torgal. The longer I think about it the less I like the ending xd.
Meanwhile, after Ex33’s ending, I did NG+ in “completionist mode” so I could see the other ending (didn’t see the load previous saves option) because I desperately wanted to keep playing xd
I can absolutely see where people come from but ff16 was my introduction to the franchise and honestly I freakin loved it, maybe I’m coping because of how amazing I thought the gameplay itself was but I got so immersed into it, platinumed it and all!
I beat Odin in 16 and stopped playing.
Technically that was a spoiler in the video but i honestly dont care lol
I’m sooo glad to hear what you just said about FF16. It’s EXACTLY what I was complaining about to friends who think I’m just an idiot.
This game is bloated with dialogues and it is exhausting.
The Eikon fights are the best part of the game. Totally agree with ALL other points. I only finished this game because I already bought it
Are you telling me you didn’t stand up and cheer when Clive said “The only fantasy here is yours and we shall be its final witness”?
….so how do you really feel? 😙
I absolutely HATE, when they Milk a death scene like that bro… It happens so many times in JRPG’s, and I never understood y the writers thought it works…
I think I might be one of the only people who didn’t like the Eikon fights in ff16…
It felt like there was no skill to them, every eikon fight was insanely easy. They were visually spectacular, but it just felt like a big kaiju battle. I never felt a real emotional “connection” to what was going on.
Honestly, for me, Eikon fights in ff16 were like a Michael Bay movie. All style, no substance. Flashy with great effects, but really shallow with no depth.
But as I said, I feel like I’m in the vast minority with that opinion.
33’s first hour hit me in the dick.
I’ll still stand by saying FF16 was an excellent game. 😂
16 was a game I felt compelled to complete, but I disliked it the longer I played it lol
The one thing about the writing I do like is how the Clive/Jill relationship is handled. There isn’t so much bloat there.
Bro, I actually forgot about Joshua’s death lore dump lmao That was indeed ridiculous
FF16 was Devil May Cry with a Final Fantasy skin.
Idk man. I fucking loved 16. I did play World of Warcraft for 13 years though so…
😢ff16 on paper was really amazing and the story had so much but yeah no, 100 percent facts on everything.
I’m glad I never played 14 before 16 so it was a new experience for me atleast
In FF16, Clive finds out about his mother being the one that gets his entire family killed but does nothing about it. He fucks around with everything else but doesn’t deal with her when he had the opportunity to. But decides for what ever reason to go play as Cid.
I actually liked it a lot, is it perfect ? god no, but I had a great time playing it, even platinumed it.
Expedition 33 is on a whole other class, it’s a generational game
The game was made by a team whose only experience was making FF14, an online game.
that why story for me is the most important, this game had not the best gameplay but the worst was the story by far
Couldn’t get more than 3 hours into the game. I don’t even care about the writing. It’s awful but it’s not the main issue. The game is tedious and repetitive and every single side quest is “go here, fight, come back.” It’s so insanely dull. It’s all style and literally 0 substance
We must’ve played different games then lmao just like cod fans hate turn bases turn based fans hate active combat lol
First time i saw FF16, i thought it was an Attack on Titan wannabe. 🤔🤔
First 2 hours of XVI writing was unreal. The demo was a 9/10 the entire game is 7/10.
Wow hitting the nail on the head there
16 was full of top tier dialogue writing. I don’t know what you’re talking about. 😃
Gave up with 16 after the halfway point
You know what I can’t stop thinking about. What if after Phoenix gate when Clive accepts he is Ifrit if he had said no to Cid offer to join and went to Rosaria to reclaim his homeland immediately but not under the banner of the phoenix but Ifrit. He goes after the mothercrystal of the Iron Kingdom with the eventual goal being to take revenge on his mother and Sandbrege since they broke the peace treaty and betrayed Rosaria. That way were continuing the revenge story, Clive now has his own Kingdom which make him a much bigger threat against the other nations especially when Rosoria has 2 Eikons (Ifrit and Shiva) and now that Rosoria also has a mother crystal he is also in direct conflict with Cid who is still planning on destroying the crystals I can see alliances being made and broken betrayals and so much intrigue the possibilities were endless.
FF16’s writing has the worst mix of bloat and bare bones in the franchise. It has SO much potential, but needed a hard ass editor to actually make the necessary cuts and restructuring. There’s something there dang it but at EVERY TURN they made a bad choice
The gameplay of 16 was so bad and boring. It was smash 1 button and win
THANK YOU!!! its so nice to find a FF fan that isnt part of the toxic fan base that defends everything with FF in the title. 16 was the most boring FF ive ever played.
16 is good. I myself playing them all get your point. But my fiance who never played any FF this one got her into it and she loved it, and I’ll always appreciate that about 16. So I think with 16 they were just trying to get new people to play FF.
Personally I loved 16 maybe that might be because I’m not a big FF fan
In defence of XVI’s writing, Clive is at least a strong character who takes on huge responsibility and doesn’t shirk it or get bossed around by the people under him like so many male leaders (MCU). Jill is a flawed character who has an actual believable romance with Clive and isn’t just some feminism power fantasy. Dion is a tragically beautiful character who is more than his romance with Terence and he’s a good man trying to do good things in a world working directly against him.
When lavitz died in legend of dragoon i cryed also have you played legend of legia 1 or 2
I love that the summons are kind of this symbolic inner turmoil and I was excited for the Bahamut reveal and the best they do is be diet gay and not even explore his turmoil of being a homosexual noble with a father only tolerating it BECAUSE he’s a dominant, but yeah, lets focus on Garuda and Titan….I loved the summon fights 100% though, but oof on the writing.
Edit: Loved Bahamut and loved Dion, but they did a bunch of characters dirty.
I liked the story of 16, but a lot of stuff that they did was pretty questionable. a lot of “huh? why?” moments. the boss battles were super well done though, I’ll give them that. but Clive screaming “JOSHUAAA” every two seconds was the most annoying thing ever. i think I remembered that more than anything.
I enjoyed XVI, the dialog wasn’t that bad. Like uh… I don’t remember any of it.
… Oh…
FF7 is more or less lost at this point but maybe there’s still hope for a FFX remake in the style of Clair Obscure. Just imagine pulling a counter with Auron…
Say what you will about Kingdom Hearts and its writing, it doesn’t feel anywhere near as bloated and clunky as XVI’s.
FF16’s story when it was good it was great but when it was bad it was really bad.
I could still deal with all the story issues since I liked the semi GOT thing they had going on but I never got into the action gameplay that’s the one thing I didn’t like from 15 and 16
16 had me interested at first but my patience wore thin quickly. Combat is not my cup of tea. Enemies felt generic and bland. Alot of the world was really uninteresting and unmemorable. The side content had mmo style npcs and dialogue. The story was interesting at first but lost its steam after prolugue for me. It was all style over substance. On paper it could’ve been a banger but it ended up a real fat wet stinker. Rebirth is honestly one of my faves. Their are things that bug me about it but it was alot of fun. Hard to play through twice though. They need to trim off some of that fat. Or make it so good that you don’t want to skip it.
hey man i love ur content and just wanted to ask if you would ever consider streaming on youtube? im itching to watch ur streams, but i cant be bothered with twitches terrible ads
Couldn’t said it any better. Now imagine the visuals of 16 with the lore and pacing of ffx, square has fallen so deep that final fantasy isn’t even recognizable anymore.
This is what a lot of Animes do, when the villian or important character dies, that massive information dump. I could never take it seriously tbh, and i am familir with that from Dragon Ball, one of my all time favourite Animes ever, the deaths scene with vegeta on Namek as example. Yes sure it was emotional but when you think about it, it is drawn out to the maximum, mind you Vegeta got shot in the Lunge ffs! Reasons kinda why i prefered the Manga since it was overall more to the point than the show itself.
I was really out on FF16 before launch. Then I started to play it and was gaming pleasantly surprised.. then I kept going and felt as though I should have just trusted my instincts.
I thought you were about to fall outta your chair there sebby😂😂
Tbh, after Rebirth, FF16 was actually a relieve to play and the best FF since 10 imo (didnt play 14), even tho the bar isnt very high indeed
Not to mention the entire shift in the tone and story of the game after the Cid part ends. It makes the first half of the game feel like a 25 hour tutorial just to show you how to get and use your powers. Bridged to the actual game by the genius narrative device of a black screen that says “Five years later…”
Square really needs to learn that less is more. I’m worried that a IX remake would be super annoying because of excessive and meaningless dialogue
I loved 16, 🤷🏾♀️
True
Final Fantasy 16 was not at all what I had hoped for. The dialogue felt too drawn out.
That said, it was playable.
Some guy in a different comment section mentioned that Clair Obscure is only great because we’ve come so accustomed to mediocrity, and I can’t really fault his opinion, even though I like to believe I love the game because it’s great, period.
I liked 16. I had fun with it, but i will probably never play it again. Expedition 33 I definitely will play again.
Finding you through expedition 33 is so funny to me because I only got into the Final Fantasy games through 13-2 and then went back and played 12, the only game with turn based combat i could get into was 10. I’ve tried 7,8, 4 and always fell off of them so I am unironically a new age FF enjoyer so watching you rip them apart while playing my GoTY is always entertaining.
Yeah the pacing and dialogue in FF16 were all over the place ESPECIALLY the last side quests that they just shoehorned into the final arc before going to Origin
i dont think ffxvi is a bad action game, thats all, fine action game called final fantasy.
16 was amazing to me 😭 I do agree the receptive sude content was a bore but the main story was crazy
final fantasy 7 rebirth may have some dull side quests. But it was my favorite on all ffs, just because of the banter.
As a father, hearing Barret bonding with Cloud over parenthood was really touching. The conversation evolves and the dialogues grows with the characters.
Im aware of the problems, bad pacing, forced mini games and horrendous “press L2 and R2” that got in the way of otherwise emotional parts.
But still one of my favorites.
My only hope is that some modder eventually take those “L2 and R2” scennes away.
I kinda lost it when the clip of Josh lore dumping was still going on after you stopped talking about 16 😂
It is said that there is no Japanese word for ‘pacing’. Play any Kojima game, or Final Fantasy, or any Yakuza game. I fkn love Yakuza, but goddamn can they talk in circles.
The beginning of expedition 33 had me emotionally invested within minutes. Don’t know who these people are but my heart has been broken
still better writing than 13 and 15
Saying Yotsuyu is the worst Villain in Stormblood is IN SANE to me
Glad I just purchased 16 on summer sale 🤡
Wow, I didn’t think I’d be this early. I love the content and your opinions are the best!!
