It’s crazy that a Japanese game that came out in 1997 (FF7) outsold games coming out in the 2010’s. JRPGs, and a lot of other Japanese entertainment media didn’t really sell very well to western markets until relatively recently. Selling over 10 million copies of FF7, while not staggering by today’s standards set by games like Elden Ring for example, is super impressive. Contextually, it’s more impressive than how FF15 or FF14 did.

I didn’t know FF 3 and 12 was that good. I’m playing 1-6 Final Fantasy Bundle right now, I would of thought 6 would be it over the First Fantasies 1-6. I’m definitely going to check out 3. I just started off with 1 so I’m going to work my way up to 6.

It bothers me that people are talking about a remake of 9 and that they skipped over 8. especially after seeing how many people liked 8. Never played 9 as people did not like the art style going back and more child like. 8 was the first 1 that made the characters look like semi realistic adults in combat and cut scenes. Dissidia did extremely well but to be honest the original Dissidia deserved all of it, excluding MvC1 it might be my favourite crossover game ever, I don’t know why they did what they did with NT considering how many people loved the originals.

Dissidia had a good story, great customisation for combat, you could choose the music for each battle, every character had a handful of extra costumes, there was a story editor mode where you could create your own stories including custom battle scenarios, the combat was insanely good and still is, on top of all that there was a tournament mode AND a replay function.

When it comes to content, quality, and variety it may actually be the best Final Fantasy game, those games were so good and they were just for PSP, they went extremely hard on a game that was only on a handheld device.

FFXVI number hasn’t been updated since it reached 3 mill after a week or so.

You also have to remember that a lot of the older ones were never released outside of japan till years later. Which is part of the reason 7 is so high, it was the first outside of the US and Japan

Where’s your source data for any of this? There’s some numbers that are a mix and match of releases (FF3), while others are only original release sales, but you drive up numbers “over time” also GROSSLY inaccurately. So what are you sources, and don’t say SE’s corporate data sheets, as I’ve read those and they don’t disclose specifics unless they hit certain milestones, and nothing more after that point unless it’s a rare insight into changes in the sales growth of a game over time.

A few are accurate from multiple sources, but seriously this is poor form, and very poorly conceived and handled. It’s a good way to toss in some gross negligence into the mix by giving some people a very inaccurate read on numbers. Like FFT you have WotL tossed in at one point, and FF3 is nowhere NEAR 3.3m. That was just the rerelease numbers. 3.1 is FF6’s original release numbers rounded up. FF3 not counting the original, FF6 not counting the various rereleases. Good job…oh wait.

FF15 did not sell that many copies. You don’t count DLC as part of sales, and we don’t even know what DLC numbers are. FF15 is around 10~11m copies sold.

FF14 cannot be gauged properly as it’s an MMO, but since each expansion is technically a new game release, given content size, yes you can qualify that, but it’s not an accurate look on numbers. That doesn’t tell you individual sales in terms of how many players bought the game, only how many total combined original + expansion releases were sold, which is grossly disingenuous. The real numbers are closer to 3m, going down to about 2.5m total sales and continued sales. So 2.5~3m customers. That is a more accurate logic when comparing total sales to stand alone releases as you’re accounting for stand alone purchases.

In my opinion, this chart reflects quality only in a small portion. It reflects more the market expansion, video games population, growth and the name that Square carved in the popular culture with their best games. Besides, a lot of our personal preferences are based on the first good experience with those games, some ppl was ff3, others was ff6 / chrono trigger, Many people played their first rpg in Ff7, for many more their first good rpg was ff10.
